Tom Tromey 05c6bdc1a9 Mention Python versions in the documentation
This updates python.texi to note that gdb can be compiled against
either major version of Python.  It also removes the "execfile"
example, because that is specific to Python 2.

Tom Tromey e7b5068cc2 Update Python unwinder documentation
PR python/19808 points out a few issues in the Python unwinder
documentation.  This patch update the documentation for
create_unwind_info and read_register to address the issues noted, and
adds a cautionary note about writing an unwinder.

Tom Tromey 4a5a194ae8 Reword gdb.GdbError text
PR python/23108 points out that the gdb.GdbError documentation is
somewhat difficult to find.  The exception is apparently just
mentioned in passing.  This patch introduces a new table and adds a
bit more text to try to make it more obvious.

Tom Tromey f5a476a7b1 Avoid warnings from makeinfo
"make info" gives a number of warnings about the use of a "." in
@ref-like commands.  These come from the ".info" suffix.  I think this
suffix is redundant, and removing the suffix also removes the warning.

Tom Tromey 60c0454d3d Document that Frame.block can throw
PR python/16484 points out that Frame.block can throw an exception,
but this is not documented.

This patch fixes the documentation.  Changing Frame.block to return
None would be nice, but I suspect it's too late for that change.

Tom Tromey 984ee559a2 Fix "set" handling of Python parameters
It's long bothered me that setting a Python parameter from the CLI
will print the "set" help text by default.  I think usually "set"
commands should be silent.  And, while you can modify this behavior a
bit by providing a "get_set_string" method, if this method returns an
empty string, a blank line will be printed.

This patch removes the "help" behavior and changes the get_set_string
behavior to avoid printing a blank line.  The code has a comment about
preserving API behavior, but I don't think this is truly important;
and in any case the workaround -- implementing get_set_string -- is
trivial.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 26.

Tom Tromey 7729052b53 Add basic Python API for convenience variables
This adds a basic Python API for accessing convenience variables.
With this, convenience variables can be read and set from Python.
Although gdb supports convenience variables whose value changes at
each call, this is not exposed to Python; it could be, but I think
it's just as good to write a convenience function in this situation.

This is PR python/23080.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 26.

Tom Tromey 0489430a0e Handle var_zuinteger and var_zuinteger_unlimited from Python
PR python/20084 points out that the Python API doesn't handle the
var_zuinteger and var_zuinteger_unlimited parameter types.

This patch adds support for these types.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 26.

Simon Marchi b89641bab5 python: Add qualified parameter to gdb.Breakpoint
This patch adds the possibility to pass a qualified=True|False parameter
when creating a breakpoint in Python.  It is equivalent to using
-qualified in a linespec.  The parameter actually accepts any Python
value, and converts it to boolean using Python's standard rules for
that (https://docs.python.org/3/library/stdtypes.html#truth).

Unlike the -source/-line/-function/-label parameters, it is possible to
use -qualified with a "normal" (non-explicit) linespec.  Therefore, it
is possible (unlike these other parameters) to use this new parameter
along with the spec parameter.

I updated the py-breakpoint.exp test.  To be able to test multiple
locations using a namespace, I had to switch the test case to compile as
C++.  If we really wanted to, we could run it as both C and C++, but
omit the C++-specific parts when running it as C.

Simon Marchi 0b982d685e python doc: Rework Breakpoint.__init__ doc
I find the documentation of the gdb.Breakpoint constructor hard to read
and not very informative, especially since we have added the new
linespec parameters.  There are multiple problems (some are subjective):

- It's not clear that you should use either the spec string or the
  explicit arguments, not both.
- It's not clear what combination of parameters you can use.
- The big block of text describing the arguments is hard to read.
- Currently, it seems like the "spec" argument is mandatory, even though
  it is not (if you use explicit linespec).
- The square bracket nesting

    [arg1 [, arg2[, arg3]]]

  makes it seems like if you specify arg3, you must specify arg1 and
  arg2 (it's not the case here).

This patch tries to address these problems.

Phil Muldoon 824cc835aa Implement explicit locations for Python breakpoints.
This introduces several new keywords to the bppy_init constructor.
The spec parameter is now optional but mutually exclusive to the
explicit keywords source, label, function and line.

Tom Tromey 7c96f8c1da Add new_inferior, inferior_deleted, and new_thread events
This adds a few new events to gdb's Python layer: new_inferior,
inferior_deleted, and new_thread.  I wanted to be able to add a
combined inferior/thread display window to my GUI, and I needed a few
events to make this work.  This is PR python/15622.

Tim Wiederhake 913aeadd9d Python: Introduce gdb.RecordGap class

A gap is not an instruction and it should not pretend to be one.
gdb.Record.instruction_history is now a list of gdb.RecordInstruction and
gdb.RecordGap objects.  This allows the user to deal with Gaps in the record
in a more sane way.

Artemiy Volkov 3fcf899da1 Support rvalue references in the gdb python module (includes doc/)
This patch adds the ability to inspect rvalue reference types and values using
the gdb python module. This is achieved by creating two wrappers for
valpy_reference_value(), using the ReferenceExplorer class to handle the
objects of rvalue reference types and placing necessary checks for a
TYPE_CODE_RVALUE_REF type code next to the checks for a TYPE_CODE_REF type
code.

Tom Tromey 3f77c7691f PR python/13598 - add before_prompt event
This adds an event that is emitted just before GDB presents a prompt
to the user.  This provides Python code a way to react to whatever
changes might have been made by the previous command.  For example, in
my GUI I use this to track changes to the selected frame and reflect
them in the UI.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 23.

Tom Tromey 9c37b5aed9 Remove Java support
This patch removes the Java support from gdb.  gcj has not seen much
development or use for years now, and was recently removed from GCC.
This patch changes gdb to follow; in the unlikely event that there are
still users using gcj, they can continue to use an older gdb to debug.
Or, they can debug in C++ mode.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 24.

Tom Tromey dac790e1b9 PR python/15620, PR python/18620 - breakpoint events in Python
This patch adds some breakpoint events to Python.  In particular,
there is a creation event that is emitted when a breakpoint is
created; a modification event that is emitted when a breakpoint
changes somehow; and a deletion event that is emitted when a
breakpoint is deleted.

In this patch, the event's payload is the breakpoint itself.  I
considered making a new event type to hold the breakpoint, but I
didn't see a need.  Still, I thought I would mention this as a spot
where some other choice is possible.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 23.

Tom Tromey cda75e7050 Rearrange Python breakpoint node in documentation
I noticed that the Python breakpoint documentation was ordered a bit
oddly.  It documented the constructor; then the stop method; then the
watchpoint constants (used for the constructor); then various other
methods and attributes; then the other constants used by the
constructor; and then finally some more methods and attributes.

This patch rearranges the node a little to move the constants to just
after the constructor and before the other methods and attributes.

Tom Tromey e0f3fd7c44 PR python/19293 - invalidate frame cache when unwinders change
PR python/19293 notes that when a Python unwinder is disabled, the
frame cache is not invalidated.  This means that disabling an unwinder
doesn't have any immediate effect -- but in my experience it's often
the case that I want to enable or disable an unwinder in order to see
what happens.

This patch adds a new gdb.invalidate_cached_frames function and
arranges for the relevant bits of library code to call it.  I've only
partially documented this function, considering a warning sufficient
without going into all the reasons ordinary code should not call it.
The name of the new function was taken from a comment in frame.h next
to reinit_frame_cache.

No new test as I think the updates to the existing test are sufficient
to show that the code is working as intended.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 23.

Tom Tromey 1957f6b89f Fix PR python/17981
PR python/17981 notes that gdb.breakpoints() returns None when there
are no breakpoints; whereas an empty list or tuple would be more in
keeping with Python and the documentation.

This patch fixes the bug by changing the no-breakpoint return to make
an empty tuple.

Pedro Alves 5d5658a1d3 Per-inferior/Inferior-qualified thread IDs
This commit changes GDB to track thread numbers per-inferior.  Then,
if you're debugging multiple inferiors, GDB displays
"inferior-num.thread-num" instead of just "thread-num" whenever it
needs to display a thread:

You can still use "thread NUM", in which case GDB infers you're
referring to thread NUM of the current inferior.

The $_thread convenience var and Python's InferiorThread.num attribute
are remapped to the new per-inferior thread number.  It's a backward
compatibility break, but since it only matters when debugging multiple
inferiors, I think it's worth doing.

Because MI thread IDs need to be a single integer, we keep giving
threads a global identifier, _in addition_ to the per-inferior number,
and make MI always refer to the global thread IDs.  IOW, nothing
changes from a MI frontend's perspective.

Similarly, since Python's Breakpoint.thread and Guile's
breakpoint-thread/set-breakpoint-thread breakpoint methods need to
work with integers, those are adjusted to work with global thread IDs
too.  Follow up patches will provide convenient means to access
threads' global IDs.

To avoid potencially confusing users (which also avoids updating much
of the testsuite), if there's only one inferior and its ID is "1",
IOW, the user hasn't done anything multi-process/inferior related,
then the "INF." part of thread IDs is not shown.  E.g,.:

Simon Marchi a86c90e6ba Clarify doc about memory read/write and non-8-bits addressable memory unit sizes
New in v3:

 * Change RSP documentation as well. The m, M and X packets now use
 lengths in addressable memory units.

 * Change wording: use byte for 8-bits chunks and addressable memory unit
   for the unit of data associated to a single address.
 * Introduce definition of addressable memory unit in the Memory

This patch modifies the manual to clarify the MI, RSP and Python APIs in
regard to reading/writing memory on architectures with addressable
memory unit that are not 8 bits.

Care is taken to use the word "addressable memory unit" or "memory unit"
when referring to one piece of the smallest addressable size on the
current architecture and the word "byte" when referring to an 8-bits
data piece.

For MI, -data-{read,write}-memory are not modified, since they are
deprecated.
