Earlier while working on the big completer rework series, I managed to
break
(gdb) [TAB]
locally, and make GDB crash, but only notice a few weeks down the
road, because we have no test for that...
I also noticed that:
(gdb) [TAB]
didn't work (didn't show all commands as matches), even though
entering a command with leading whitespace works:
(gdb) help
This commit fixes the latter and adds a testcase that covers both
issues.
The gdb.base/completion.exp change is necessary because the new test
has a file name that also starts with "gdb.base/complet", making that
particular test ambiguous. Adding another letter disambiguates.

Undefined command: "pcomplete". Try "help".

The problem is that the expect buffer can get filled with partial
output that ends in the gdb prompt, and so the default FAIL inside
gdb_test_multiple matches.
Fix that by splitting the gdb_test_multiple in two stages. Since that
is done in more than one place in the testcase, move the otherwise
duplicate code to helper procedures.

Continuing the theme of the explicit locations patch, this patch gets
rid of the need for quoting function names in linespec TAB completion.
To recap, when you have overloads in your program, and you want to set
a breakpoint in one of them:

<all the symbols in the program that start with "i" are uselessly shown...>
This patch gets rid of the need for quoting by switching the linespec
completer to use the custom completion word point mechanism added in
the previous explicit location patch (extending it as needed), to
correctly determine the right completion word point. In the case
above, we want the completer to figure out that it's completing a
function name that starts with "function(i", and it now does.
We also want the completer to know when it's potentially completing a
source file name, for:
(gdb) break source.[TAB] -> source.c:
(gdb) break source.c: # Type line number or function name now
And we want it to know to complete label names, which it doesn't today:
(gdb) break function:lab[TAB]
etc., etc.
So what we want is for completion to grok the input string as closely
to how the linespec parser groks it.
With that in mind, the solution suggests itself - make the linespec
completer use the same parsing code as normal linespec parsing.
That's what the patch does. The old completer is replaced by one that
reuses the actual linespec parser as much as possible. This (ideally)
eliminate differences between what completion understands and actually
setting breakpoints understands by design.
The completer now offers sensible completion candidates depending on
which component of the linespec is being completed, source filename,
function, line number, expression, and (a new addition), labels. For
example, when completing the function part, we now show the full name
of the method as completion candidates, instead of showing whatever
comes after what readline considered the word break character:

As mentioned, this teaches the linespec completer about completing
label symbols too:

A nice convenience is that when completion uniquely matches a source
name, gdb adds the ":" automatically for you:

(gdb) b filename.c: # ':' auto-added, cursor right after it.
It's the little details. :-)
I worked on this patch in parallel with writing the (big) testcase
added closer to the end of the series, which exercises many many
tricky cases around quoting and whitespace insertion placement. In
general, I think it now all Just Works.

This commit adds a new exception, MAX_COMPLETIONS_REACHED_ERROR, to be
thrown whenever the completer has generated too many candidates to
be useful. A new user-settable variable, "max_completions", is added
to control this behaviour. A top-level completion limit is added to
complete_line_internal, as the final check to ensure the user never
sees too many completions. An additional limit is added to
default_make_symbol_completion_list_break_on, to halt time-consuming
symbol table expansions.

This fixes a failure of the test case "complete 'info registers '" in
completion.exp on architectures where the user registers have numbers
above 99. In that case the output of "maint print user-registers" was
no longer indented, and the regexp in the test case failed to add them
to the list of expected completion results. The fix also swaps the
columns "Name" and "Nr", such that the indentation is always the same,
and to be consistent with the output of "maint print registers".

I noticed that a few tests in completion.exp put the directory name
into the name of the resulting test. While the directory name is
relative, this still makes for spurious differences depending on
whether the test was run in serial or parallel mode.
This patch fixes the problem. I'm checking it in.

This patch removes some code in gdb.base/compilation.exp which
is aimed at restoring the original timeout global value after having
changed it for this testcase. Restoring the timeout global is not
necessary as this is taken care of by gdb_init, which is called
at the start of each testing.

Doug told me that there are some regressions in gdb.base/completion.exp.
They are caused by my recent change, and can be reproduced via:

existed in either of them.

The completion feature and other features on readline depend on the
readline library. However, readline library is not always used, for
example, running testsuite like
make check RUNTESTFLAGS="--host_board=local-remote-host"
the input stream is not a tty, and GDB doesn't use readline library
as a result.
This patch is to skip tests on completion and readline if
'show editing' is off, which means readline isn't used. Note that
some tests in gdb.base/completion.exp test command complete, which
isn't related to readline, so these tests aren't affected by readline
library. This patch also moves these tests up, run them
unconditionally, and run the rest if readline library is used.

Currently, several commands take "0" or "-1" to mean "unlimited".
"show" knows when to print "unlimited":

However, the user can't herself specify "unlimited" directly:
(gdb) set height unlimited
No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command.

This patch addresses that, by adjusting the set handler for all
integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited commands to accept literal
"unlimited". It also installs a completer. Presently, we complete on
symbols by default, and at
<http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-03/msg00864.html> I've
shown a WIP prototype that tried to keep that half working in these
commands. In the end, it turned out to be more complicated than
justifiable, IMO. It's super rare to want to pass the value of a
variable/symbol in the program to a GDB set/show knob. That'll still
work, it's just that we won't assist with completion anymore. This
patch just sticks with the simple, and completes on "unlimited", and
nothing else. This simplification means that
"set he<tab><tab>"
is all it takes to get to:
"set height unlimited"
The patch then goes through all integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited
commands in the tree, and updates both the online help and the manual
to mention that "unlimited" is accepted in addition to 0/-1. In the
cases where the command had no online help text at all, this adds it.
I've tried to make the texts read in a way that "unlimited" is
suggested before "0" or "-1" is.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

Two modifications:

The command line completion has spoiled me. Thus the lack of completion with
the "handle" command annoys me. Patch!
