Introduce a gdb_ref_ptr specialization for struct value
struct value is internally reference counted and so, while it also has some ownership rules unique to it, it makes sense to use a gdb_ref_ptr when managing it automatically. This patch removes the existing unique_ptr specialization in favor of a reference-counted pointer. It also introduces two other clarifications: 1. Rename value_free to value_decref, which I think is more in line with what the function actually does; and 2. Change release_value to return a gdb_ref_ptr. Fix PR19061, gdb hangs/spins-on-cpu when debugging any program on Alpha
This fixes PR19061, where gdb hangs/spins-on-cpu when debugging any program on Alpha. (This patch is Uros' forward port of the patch from comment #5 of the PR [1].) Patch was tested on alphaev68-linux-gnu, also tested with gcc's testsuite, where it fixed all hangs in guality.exp and simulate-thread.exp testcases. Remove some unused variables
This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused. I have not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions such as struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type); in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect. s/get_regcache_arch (regcache)/regcache->arch ()/g
This patches removes get_regcache_arch, and use regache->arch () instead. The motivation of this change is that I am going to move some basic stuff into a base class of regcache. I don't need to update "client" code regcache->arch (). Clean up includes of doublest.h and floatformat.h
As a first small step to getting rid of doublest.h, this patch removes the include of "floatformat.h" in "doublest.h". This is actually not needed for the file itself. A few source files now need to include "floatformat.h" directly, since they got it indirectly via "doublest.h" and still need it. In reviewing which files need it, I found a number of files that include "floatformat.h" directly without actually needing it at all. Similarly, a number of files include "doublest.h" without needing it. Delegate opcodes to select disassembler in GDB
This patch changes GDB to use disassembler selected by opcodes in
default, so that we don't have to duplicate the selection logic again

Teach GDB that wchar_t is a built-in type in C++ mode
GDB is currently not aware that wchar_t is a built-in type in C++ mode. This is usually not a problem because the debug info describes the type, so when you have a program loaded, you don't notice this. However, if you try expressions involving wchar_t before a program is loaded, gdb errors out: (gdb) p (wchar_t)-1 No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command. (gdb) p L"hello" No type named wchar_t. (gdb) ptype L"hello" No type named wchar_t. This commit teaches gdb about the type. After: (gdb) p (wchar_t)-1 $1 = -1 L'\xffffffff' (gdb) p L"hello" $2 = L"hello" (gdb) ptype L"hello" type = wchar_t [6] Unlike char16_t/char32_t, unfortunately, the underlying type of wchar_t is implementation dependent, both size and signness. So this requires adding a couple new gdbarch hooks. I grepped the GCC code base for WCHAR_TYPE and WCHAR_TYPE_SIZE, and it seems to me that the majority of the ABIs have a 4-byte signed wchar_t, so that's what I made the default for GDB too. Remove GDBARCH_BREAKPOINT_MANIPULATION and SET_GDBARCH_BREAKPOINT_MANIPULATION
Both of them are used in conversion. We can remove them since the conversion is done. There are many architectures only have one breakpoint instruction, so their gdbarch methods breakpoint_kind_from_pc and sw_breakpoint_from_kind look very similar. Instead of macro, we use template "template <size_t, const gdb_byte *> struct bp_manipulation" for these architectures. Many archs have only one kind of breakpoint, so their breakpoint_from_pc implementations are quite similar. target_read_memory&co: no longer return target_xfer_status
Years ago, these functions used to return errno/EIO. Later, through a
series of changes that intended to remove native/remote differences,
they ended up returning a target_xfer_status in disguise.
Unlike target_xfer_partial&co, the point of target_read_memory&co is
to either fully succeed or fail. On error, they always return
TARGET_XFER_E_IO. So there's no real point in casting the return of
target_read_memory to a target_xfer_status to pass it to memory_error.
Instead, it results in clearer code to simply decouple
target_read_memory&co's return from target_xfer_status.
This fixes build errors like this in C++ mode:

Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for the mailing list. This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example: - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...) - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form of a void pointer - "user data" passed to some function This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted. Here's the ChangeLog entry. Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Delete Tru64 support
This commit does most of the mechanical removal. IOW, the easy part. procfs.c isn't touched beyond removing a couple obvious bits that are guarded by a couple macros defined in config/alpha/nm-osf3.h. Going beyond that for procfs.c & co would be a harder excision that potentially affects Solaris. Some comments in the generic alpha code ABIs that may still be relevant and I wouldn't know what to do with them. That can always be done on a separate pass, preferably by someone who can test on alpha. A couple other spots have references to OSF/Tru64 and related files being removed, but it felt like removing them would make things worse, not better. We can revisit those when we next need to touch that code. I didn't remove a reference to osf in testsuite/lib/future.exp, as I believe that code is imported from DejaGNU. Built and tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, with --enable-targets=all.
