Optimize the performance of the group_setup function.
When processing a section that is a member of a group, the group that contains it is looked up using a linear search. The resulting O(n^2) complexity causes significant performance issues when dealing with object files with very many groups. By remembering the index of the last found group and restarting the next search from that index, the search instead becomes O(n) in common cases. * elf.c (setup_group): Optimize search for group by remembering last found group and restarting search at that index. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_obj_tdata): Add group_search_offset field. |

BFD whitespace fixes
Binutils is supposed to use tabs. In my git config I have whitespace = indent-with-non-tab,space-before-tab,trailing-space and I got annoyed enough seeing red in "git diff" output to fix the problems. * doc/header.sed: Trim trailing space when splitting lines. * aix386-core.c, * aout-adobe.c, * aout-arm.c, * aout-cris.c, * aout-ns32k.c, * aout-target.h, * aout-tic30.c, * aoutf1.h, * aoutx.h, * arc-got.h, * arc-plt.def, * arc-plt.h, * archive.c, * archive64.c, * archures.c, * armnetbsd.c, * bfd-in.h, * bfd.c, * bfdio.c, * binary.c, * bout.c, * cache.c, * cisco-core.c, * coff-alpha.c, * coff-apollo.c, * coff-arm.c, * coff-h8300.c, * coff-i386.c, * coff-i860.c, * coff-i960.c, * coff-m68k.c, * coff-m88k.c, * coff-mcore.c, * coff-mips.c, * coff-ppc.c, * coff-rs6000.c, * coff-sh.c, * coff-stgo32.c, * coff-tic4x.c, * coff-tic54x.c, * coff-tic80.c, * coff-we32k.c, * coff-x86_64.c, * coff-z80.c, * coff-z8k.c, * coff64-rs6000.c, * coffcode.h, * coffgen.c, * cofflink.c, * coffswap.h, * compress.c, * corefile.c, * cpu-alpha.c, * cpu-arm.c, * cpu-avr.c, * cpu-bfin.c, * cpu-cr16.c, * cpu-cr16c.c, * cpu-crx.c, * cpu-d10v.c, * cpu-frv.c, * cpu-ft32.c, * cpu-i370.c, * cpu-i960.c, * cpu-ia64-opc.c, * cpu-ip2k.c, * cpu-lm32.c, * cpu-m32r.c, * cpu-mcore.c, * cpu-microblaze.c, * cpu-mips.c, * cpu-moxie.c, * cpu-mt.c, * cpu-nios2.c, * cpu-ns32k.c, * cpu-or1k.c, * cpu-powerpc.c, * cpu-pru.c, * cpu-sh.c, * cpu-spu.c, * cpu-v850.c, * cpu-v850_rh850.c, * cpu-xgate.c, * cpu-z80.c, * dwarf1.c, * dwarf2.c, * ecoff.c, * ecofflink.c, * ecoffswap.h, * elf-bfd.h, * elf-eh-frame.c, * elf-hppa.h, * elf-m10200.c, * elf-m10300.c, * elf-s390-common.c, * elf-strtab.c, * elf-vxworks.c, * elf.c, * elf32-am33lin.c, * elf32-arc.c, * elf32-arm.c, * elf32-avr.c, * elf32-avr.h, * elf32-bfin.c, * elf32-cr16.c, * elf32-cr16c.c, * elf32-cris.c, * elf32-crx.c, * elf32-d10v.c, * elf32-d30v.c, * elf32-dlx.c, * elf32-epiphany.c, * elf32-fr30.c, * elf32-frv.c, * elf32-ft32.c, * elf32-h8300.c, * elf32-hppa.c, * elf32-i386.c, * elf32-i860.c, * elf32-i960.c, * elf32-ip2k.c, * elf32-lm32.c, * elf32-m32c.c, * elf32-m32r.c, * elf32-m68hc11.c, * elf32-m68hc12.c, * elf32-m68hc1x.c, * elf32-m68hc1x.h, * elf32-m68k.c, * elf32-m88k.c, * elf32-mcore.c, * elf32-mep.c, * elf32-metag.c, * elf32-microblaze.c, * elf32-mips.c, * elf32-moxie.c, * elf32-msp430.c, * elf32-mt.c, * elf32-nds32.c, * elf32-nds32.h, * elf32-nios2.c, * elf32-or1k.c, * elf32-pj.c, * elf32-ppc.c, * elf32-ppc.h, * elf32-pru.c, * elf32-rl78.c, * elf32-rx.c, * elf32-s390.c, * elf32-score.c, * elf32-score.h, * elf32-score7.c, * elf32-sh-symbian.c, * elf32-sh.c, * elf32-sh64.c, * elf32-sparc.c, * elf32-spu.c, * elf32-tic6x.c, * elf32-tilegx.c, * elf32-tilegx.h, * elf32-tilepro.c, * elf32-tilepro.h, * elf32-v850.c, * elf32-vax.c, * elf32-wasm32.c, * elf32-xc16x.c, * elf32-xgate.c, * elf32-xgate.h, * elf32-xstormy16.c, * elf32-xtensa.c, * elf64-alpha.c, * elf64-hppa.c, * elf64-ia64-vms.c, * elf64-mips.c, * elf64-mmix.c, * elf64-ppc.c, * elf64-s390.c, * elf64-sh64.c, * elf64-sparc.c, * elf64-tilegx.c, * elf64-tilegx.h, * elf64-x86-64.c, * elfcore.h, * elflink.c, * elfn32-mips.c, * elfnn-aarch64.c, * elfnn-ia64.c, * elfnn-riscv.c, * elfxx-aarch64.c, * elfxx-aarch64.h, * elfxx-ia64.c, * elfxx-ia64.h, * elfxx-mips.c, * elfxx-riscv.c, * elfxx-sparc.c, * elfxx-tilegx.c, * elfxx-x86.c, * elfxx-x86.h, * freebsd.h, * hash.c, * host-aout.c, * hp300hpux.c, * hppabsd-core.c, * hpux-core.c, * i386aout.c, * i386linux.c, * i386lynx.c, * i386mach3.c, * i386msdos.c, * i386netbsd.c, * ieee.c, * ihex.c, * irix-core.c, * libaout.h, * libbfd-in.h, * libbfd.c, * libcoff-in.h, * libnlm.h, * libpei.h, * libxcoff.h, * linker.c, * lynx-core.c, * m68k4knetbsd.c, * m68klinux.c, * m68knetbsd.c, * m88kmach3.c, * mach-o-aarch64.c, * mach-o-arm.c, * mach-o-i386.c, * mach-o-target.c, * mach-o-x86-64.c, * mach-o.c, * mach-o.h, * merge.c, * mipsbsd.c, * mmo.c, * netbsd.h, * netbsd-core.c, * newsos3.c, * nlm-target.h, * nlm32-ppc.c, * nlm32-sparc.c, * nlmcode.h, * ns32k.h, * ns32knetbsd.c, * oasys.c, * opncls.c, * pc532-mach.c, * pdp11.c, * pe-arm.c, * pe-i386.c, * pe-mcore.c, * pe-mips.c, * pe-x86_64.c, * peXXigen.c, * pef.c, * pef.h, * pei-arm.c, * pei-i386.c, * pei-mcore.c, * pei-x86_64.c, * peicode.h, * plugin.c, * ppcboot.c, * ptrace-core.c, * reloc.c, * riscix.c, * rs6000-core.c, * section.c, * som.c, * som.h, * sparclinux.c, * sparcnetbsd.c, * srec.c, * stabs.c, * sunos.c, * syms.c, * targets.c, * tekhex.c, * trad-core.c, * vax1knetbsd.c, * vaxnetbsd.c, * verilog.c, * versados.c, * vms-alpha.c, * vms-lib.c, * vms-misc.c, * wasm-module.c, * wasm-module.h, * xcofflink.c, * xsym.c, * xsym.h: Whitespace fixes. * bfd-in2.h, * libbfd.h, * libcoff.h: Regenerate. |

Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. (weakdef): New static inline function. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias rather than u.weakdef != NULL, and use weakdef function. ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested cross binutils on x86-64 without regressions for aarch64-linux, alpha-linux, arm-linux, bfin-elf, cr16-elf, cris-elf, crx-elf, frv-linux, hppa64-linux, hppa-linux, ia64-linux, lm32-elf, m32r-elf, m68k-linux, mcore-elf, metag-elf, microblaze-linux, mips-linux, mmix, mn10300-elf, nds32le-linux, nios2-linux, or1k-elf, powerpc64-linux, powerpc-linux, riscv32-linux, riscv64-linux, s390-linux, s390x-linux, score-elf, sh3-linux, sparc64-linux, sparc-linux, tic6x-elf, tilegx-linux, tilepro-linux, vax-linux, x86_64-mingw32 and xtensa-linux. bfd/ * elf-bfd.h (elf_backend_data): Remove gc_sweep_hook. * elf32-arm.c (elf32_arm_gc_sweep_hook): Removed. Rewrite __start and __stop symbol handling

Always define referenced __start_SECNAME/__stop_SECNAME
Currently, linker will define __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols only for orphaned sections. However, during garbage collection, ELF linker marks all sections with references to __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols as used even when section SECNAME isn't an orphaned section and linker won't define __start_SECNAME nor __stop_SECNAME. And ELF linker stores the first input section whose name matches __start_SECNAME or __stop_SECNAME in u.undef.section for garbage collection. If these symbols are provided in linker script, u.undef.section is set to the section where they will defined by linker script, which leads to the incorrect output. This patch changes linker to always define referenced __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME if the input section name is the same as the output section name, which is always true for orphaned sections, and SECNAME is a C identifier. Also __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols are marked as hidden by ELF linker so that __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols for section SECNAME in different modules are unique. For garbage collection, ELF linker stores the first matched input section in the unused vtable field. bfd/ PR ld/20022 PR ld/21557 PR ld/21562 PR ld/21571 * elf-bfd.h (elf_link_hash_entry): Add start_stop. dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executable
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's .bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into the executable to gain a small speed improvement. The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force. The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to use dynamic bss variables. bfd/ PR ld/20995 * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_table): Add sdynrelro and sreldynrelro. Pass link_info to _bfd_merge_private_bfd_data

PowerPC .gnu.attributes
This patch extends Tag_GNU_Power_ABI_FP to cover long double ABIs, makes the assembler warn about undefined tag values, and removes similar warnings from the linker. Don't generate PLT for IFUNC GOT/pointer reference
If a backend supports it, PLT entry isn't needed when all references to a STT_GNU_IFUNC symbols are done via GOT or static function pointers. For GOT entries, We generate dynamic R_*_GLOB_DAT relocations for preemptable symbols and R_*_IRELATIVE relocations for non-preemptable symbols to update them with real function address. For static pointer pointers, we generate dynamic pointer relocations and store them in: 1. .rel[a].ifunc section in PIC object. 2. .rel[a].got section in dynamic executable. 3. .rel[a].iplt section in static executable. I noticed when writing _bfd_elf_strtab_save/restore that size_t would be better than bfd_size_type for a number of things in elf-strtab.c. PowerPC VLE
VLE is an encoding, not a particular processor architecture, so it isn't really proper to select insns based on PPC_OPCODE_VLE. For example {"evaddw", VX (4, 512), VX_MASK, PPCSPE|PPCVLE, PPCNONE, {RS, RA, RB}}, {"vaddubs", VX (4, 512), VX_MASK, PPCVEC|PPCVLE, PPCNONE, {VD, VA, VB}}, shows two insns that have the same encoding, both available with VLE. Enabling both with VLE means we can't disassemble the second variant even if -Maltivec is given rather than -Mspe. Also, we don't check user assembly against the processor type as well as we could. Another problem is that when using the VLE encoding, insns from the main ppc opcode table are not available, except those using opcode 4 and 31. Correcting this revealed two errors in the ld testsuite, use of "nop" and "rfmci" when -mvle. This patch fixes those problems in the opcode table, and removes PPCNONE. I find a plain 0 distracts less from other values. In addition, I've implemented code to recognize some machine values from the apuinfo note present in ppc32 objects. It's not a complete disambiguation since we're lacking info to detect newer chips, but what we have should help with disassembly. include/ * elf/ppc.h (APUINFO_SECTION_NAME, APUINFO_LABEL, PPC_APUINFO_ISEL, PPC_APUINFO_PMR, PPC_APUINFO_RFMCI, PPC_APUINFO_CACHELCK, PPC_APUINFO_SPE, PPC_APUINFO_EFS, PPC_APUINFO_BRLOCK, PPC_APUINFO_VLE: Define. opcodes/ * ppc-dis.c (ppc_opts): Delete extraneous parentheses. Revert PR16467 change
This reverts the pr16467 change, which was incorrect due to faulty analysis of the pr16467 testcase. The failure was not due to a mismatch in symbol type (ifunc/non-ifunc) but due to a symbol loop being set up. Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. ld -z combreloc reloc sorting
PLT relocs don't appear in .rela.dyn, at least not when using normal linker scripts. However, if they do, then they ought to be placed last rather than in the middle of other relocs. * elf-bfd.h (elf_reloc_type_class): Put reloc_class_plt last. |

Strip global symbol defined in discarded section
When a global symbol is defined in COMDAT group, we shouldn't leave an undefined symbol in symbol table when the symbol section is discarded unless there is a reference to the symbol outside of COMDAT group. bfd/ PR ld/17550 * elf-bfd.h (elf_link_hash_entry): Update comments for indx, documenting that indx == -3 if symbol is defined in a discarded section. * elflink.c (elf_link_add_object_symbols): Set indx to -3 if symbol is defined in a discarded section.
