gdb: remove TYPE_CODE macro
Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (TYPE_CODE): Remove. Change all call sites to use type::code instead. |

gdb: stop using host-dependent signal numbers in windows-tdep.c
The signal enumeration in windows-tdep.c is defined differently whether it is compiled on Cygwin or not. This is problematic, since the code in tdep files is not supposed to be influenced by the host platform (the platform GDB itself runs on). This makes a difference in windows_gdb_signal_to_target. An obvious example of clash is SIGABRT. Let's pretend we are cross-debugging a Cygwin process from a MinGW (non-Cygwin Windows) GDB. If GDB needs to translate the gdb signal number GDB_SIGNAL_ABRT into a target equivalent, it would obtain the MinGW number (22), despite the target being a Cygwin process. Conversely, if debugging a MinGW process from a Cygwin-hosted GDB, GDB_SIGNAL_ABRT would be converted to a Cygwin signal number (6) despite the target being a MinGW process. This is wrong, since we want the result to depend on the target's platform, not GDB's platform. This known flaw was accepted because at the time we had a single OS ABI (called Cygwin) for all Windows binaries (Cygwin ones and non-Cygwin ones). This limitation is now lifted, as we now have separate Windows and Cygwin OS ABIs. This means we are able to detect at runtime whether the binary we are debugging is a Cygwin one or non-Cygwin one. This patch splits the signal enum in two, one for the MinGW flavors and one for Cygwin, removing all the ifdefs that made it depend on the host platform. It then makes two separate gdb_signal_to_target gdbarch methods, that are used according to the OS ABI selected at runtime. There is a bit of re-shuffling needed in how the gdbarch'es are initialized, but nothing major. gdb/ChangeLog: * windows-tdep.h (windows_init_abi): Add comment. gdb: define builtin long type to be 64 bits on amd64 Cygwin
On Windows x86-64 (when building with MinGW), the size of the "long"
type is 32 bits. amd64_windows_init_abi therefore does:
set_gdbarch_long_bit (gdbarch, 32);
This is also used when the chosen OS ABI is Cygwin, where the "long"
type is 64 bits. GDB therefore gets sizeof(long) wrong when using the
builtin long type:
$ ./gdb -nx --data-directory=data-directory -batch -ex "set architecture i386:x86-64" -ex "set osabi Cygwin" -ex "print sizeof(long)"
The target architecture is assumed to be i386:x86-64
$1 = 4
This patch makes GDB avoid setting the size of the long type to 32 bits
when using the Cygwin OS ABI. it will inherit the value set in
amd64_init_abi.
With this patch, I get:
$ ./gdb -nx --data-directory=data-directory -batch -ex "set architecture i386:x86-64" -ex "set osabi Cygwin" -ex "print sizeof(long)"
The target architecture is assumed to be i386:x86-64
$1 = 8

gdb: select "Cygwin" OS ABI for Cygwin binaries
Before this patch, the "Windows" OS ABI is selected for all Windows executables, including Cygwin ones. This patch makes GDB differentiate Cygwin binaries from non-Cygwin ones, and selects the "Cygwin" OS ABI for the Cygwin ones. To check whether a Windows PE executable is a Cygwin one, we check the library list in the .idata section, see if it contains "cygwin1.dll". I had to add code to parse the .idata section, because BFD doesn't seem to expose this information. gdb: add Windows OS ABI
GDB currently uses the "Cygwin" OS ABI (GDB_OSABI_CYGWIN) for everything related to Windows. If you build a GDB for a MinGW or Cygwin target, it will have "Cygwin" as the default OS ABI in both cases (see configure.tgt). If you load either a MinGW or Cygwin binary, the "Cygwin" OS ABI will be selected in both cases. This is misleading, because Cygwin binaries are a subset of the binaries running on Windows. When building something with MinGW, the resulting binary has nothing to do with Cygwin. Cygwin binaries are only special in that they are Windows binaries that link to the cygwin1.dll library (if my understanding is correct). Looking at i386-cygwin-tdep.c, we can see that GDB does nothing different when dealing with Cygwin binaries versus non-Cygwin Windows binaries. However, there is at least one known bug which would require us to make a distinction between the two OS ABIs, and that is the size of the built-in "long" type on x86-64. On native Windows, this is 4, whereas on Cygwin it's 8. So, this patch adds a new OS ABI, "Windows", and makes GDB use it for i386 and x86-64 PE executables, instead of the "Cygwin" OS ABI. A subsequent patch will improve the OS ABI detection so that GDB differentiates the non-Cygwin Windows binaries from the Cygwin Windows binaries, and applies the "Cygwin" OS ABI for the latter. The default OS ABI remains "Cygwin" for the GDBs built with a Cygwin target. I've decided to split the i386_cygwin_osabi_sniffer function in two, I think it's cleaner to have a separate sniffer for Windows binaries and Cygwin cores, each checking one specific thing. gdb/ChangeLog: * osabi.h (enum gdb_osabi): Add GDB_OSABI_WINDOWS. * osabi.c (gdb_osabi_names): Add "Windows". * i386-cygwin-tdep.c (i386_cygwin_osabi_sniffer): Return GDB_OSABI_WINDOWS when the binary's target is "pei-i386". gdb: recognize 64 bits Windows executables as Cygwin osabi
If I generate two Windows PE executables, one 32 bits and one 64 bits:
$ x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc test.c -g3 -O0 -o test_64
$ i686-w64-mingw32-gcc test.c -g3 -O0 -o test_32
$ file test_64
test_64: PE32+ executable (console) x86-64, for MS Windows
$ file test_32
test_32: PE32 executable (console) Intel 80386, for MS Windows
When I load the 32 bits binary in my GNU/Linux-hosted GDB, the osabi is
correctly recognized as "Cygwin":
$ ./gdb --data-directory=data-directory -nx test_32
(gdb) show osabi
The current OS ABI is "auto" (currently "Cygwin").
When I load the 64 bits binary in GDB, the osabi is incorrectly
recognized as "GNU/Linux":
$ ./gdb --data-directory=data-directory -nx test_64
(gdb) show osabi
The current OS ABI is "auto" (currently "GNU/Linux").
The 32 bits one gets recognized by the i386_cygwin_osabi_sniffer
function, by its target name:
if (strcmp (target_name, "pei-i386") == 0)
return GDB_OSABI_CYGWIN;
The target name for the 64 bits binaries is "pei-x86-64". It doesn't
get recognized by any osabi sniffer, so GDB falls back on its default
osabi, "GNU/Linux".
This patch adds an osabi sniffer function for the Windows 64 bits
executables in amd64-windows-tdep.c. With it, the osabi is recognized
as "Cygwin", just like with the 32 bits binary.
Note that it may seems strange to have a binary generated by MinGW
(which has nothing to do with Cygwin) be recognized as a Cygwin binary.
This is indeed not accurate, but at the moment GDB uses the Cygwin for
everything Windows. Subsequent patches will add a separate "Windows" OS
ABI for Windows binaries that are not Cygwin binaries.

gdb: introduce objfile text_section_offset and data_section_offset methods
The pattern objfile->section_offsets[SECT_OFF_TEXT (objfile)] ... appears very often, to get the offset of the text section of an objfile. I thought it would be more readable to write it as: objfile->text_section_offset () ... so I added this method and used it where possible. gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

Change section_offsets to a std::vector
This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.
Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.
objfile_relocate did:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets>
- new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));
... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.
This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
- { { offset } });
... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Revert the header-sorting patch
Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script). Allow really large fortran array bounds: TYPE_LENGTH to ULONGEST
This series is revisit of Siddhesh Poyarekar's patch from back in 2012. The last status on the patch is in the following gdb-patches thread: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2012-08/msg00562.html It appears that Tom approved the patch, but Jan had some issues with a compiler error that made the test fail on -m32 test runs. He wrote up a hand-tweaked .S file to deal with it. Siddesh said he would update tests. Then nothing. Siddesh and Jan have both moved on since. The patch originally required a large precursor patch to work. I have whittled this down to/rewritten the bare minimum, and this first patch is the result, changing the type of TYPE_LENGTH to ULONGEST from unsigned int. Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). x86_64-windows GDB crash due to fs_base/gs_base registers
GDB is currently crashing anytime we try to access the fs_base/gs_base
registers, either to read them, or to write them. This can be observed
under various scenarios:
- Explicit reference to those registers (eg: print $fs_base) --
probably relatively rare;
- Calling a function in the inferior, with the crash happening
because we are trying to read those registers in order to save
their value ahead of making the function call;
- Just a plain "info registers";

(htab_remove_elt shouldn't really crash in this case, but that's secondary.) The real problem is that early_data passed to tdesc_use_registers includes regs from a target description that is not the target_desc, which violates its assumptions. The registers in question are the fs_base/gs_base registers, added by amd64_init_abi: tdesc_numbered_register (feature, tdesc_data_segments, AMD64_FSBASE_REGNUM, "fs_base"); tdesc_numbered_register (feature, tdesc_data_segments, AMD64_GSBASE_REGNUM, "gs_base"); and that happens because amd64_linux_init_abi uses amd64_init_abi as helper, but they don't coordinate on which fallback tdesc to use. amd64_init_abi does: if (! tdesc_has_registers (tdesc)) tdesc = tdesc_amd64; and then adds the fs_base/gs_base registers of the "tdesc_amd64" tdesc to the tdesc_arch_data. After amd64_init_abi returns, amd64_linux_init_abi does: if (! tdesc_has_registers (tdesc)) tdesc = tdesc_amd64_linux; tdep->tdesc = tdesc; and we end up tdesc_amd64_linux installed in tdep->tdesc. The fix is to make sure that amd64_linux_init_abi and amd64_init_abi agree on default tdesc, by adding a "default tdesc" parameter to amd64_init_abi, instead of having amd64_init_abi hardcode a default. With this, amd64_init_abi creates the fs_base/gs_base registers using the tdesc_amd64_linux tdesc. Tested on x86-64 GNU/Linux, -m64. I don't have an x32 setup handy. Convert lvalue reference type check to general reference type check
In almost all contexts (except for overload resolution rules and expression semantics), lvalue and rvalue references are equivalent. That means that in all but these cases we can replace a TYPE_CODE_REF check to a TYPE_IS_REFERENCE check and, for switch statements, add a case label for a rvalue reference type next to a case label for an lvalue reference type. infinite loop stopping at "pop" insn on x64-windows
We noticed the following hang trying to run a program where one
of the subroutines we built without debugging info (opaque_routine):
$ gdb my_program
(gdb) break opaque_routine
(gdb) run
[...hangs...]
The problem comes from the fact that, at the breakpoint's address,
we have the following code:

At some point after hitting the breakpoint and stopping, GDB calls
amd64_windows_frame_decode_epilogue, which then gets stuck in the
following infinite loop:

Nothing in that loop updates PC, and therefore, because the instruction
we stopped at is a "pop", we keep looping forever doing the same thing
over and over!
This patch fixes the issue by advancing PC to the beginning of
the next instruction if the current one is a "pop reg" instruction.

Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for the mailing list. This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example: - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...) - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form of a void pointer - "user data" passed to some function This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted. Here's the ChangeLog entry. Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW). - xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo) - xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo) - xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num) - obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo) - obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num) - alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo) - alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num) Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC. Fix amd64 windows unwinding issues within MS dlls.
Unwind info in system dlls uses almost all possible codes, contrary to unwind info generated by gcc. A few issues have been discovered: incorrect handling of SAVE_NONVOL opcodes and incorrect in prologue range checks. Furthermore I added comments not to forget what has been investigated. gdb/ChangeLog: * amd64-windows-tdep.c (amd64_windows_find_unwind_info): Move redirection code to ... New common function "startswith"
This commit introduces a new inline common function "startswith" which takes two string arguments and returns nonzero if the first string starts with the second. Add debug trace in amd64-windows-tdep.c::amd64_windows_frame_decode_insns
This is a trace which would have been useful when trying to understand
why the debugger was not decoding the stream of unwind codes I was
expecting. This patch adds a trace first informing us that we are
following the unwind info to the next unwind record in that chain.

x64-windows: Fix extraction of chained UNWIND_INFO
On x86_64-windows, GDB is unable to unwind past some code in
mswsock.dll. For instance:

Backtrace stopped: previous frame inner to this frame (corrupt stack?)
The UNWIND_INFO record for frame #1's PC has a UNW_FLAG_CHAININFO
flag, and so after having decoded this unwind record, GDB's decoder
next tries to locate the next unwind record on the chain. Unfortunately,
the location of that unwind info appears to be miscomputed. This is
the expression used:
chain_vma = cache->image_base + unwind_info
+ sizeof (ex_ui) + ((codes_count + 1) & ~1) * 2 + 8;
The chain-info is expected to be right after the "Unwind codes
array" which is itself after all the fields of ex_ui's struct.
So the "+ 8" offset at the end should not be there.
Because of that extra offset, we were reading no longer processing
correct unwind info, leading the unwinder computing the wrong frame
size, computing the wrong return address, etc.

In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once. Allow Windows UNWIND_INFO version 2.
We've observed in Windows 2012 that ntdll.dll contains some unwind records with the version field set to 2. This patch adjusts the decoder to accept records flagged with this version as well. Version 2 appears to still be largely undocumented at this stage. However, apart from a mysterious opcode 6, everything else still seems to remain the same. So this patch also changes the decoder to ignore those opcodes; before this change, the debugger would silently stop the decoding, and let the frame unwinder make do with what it the decoder managed to decode up to that point. It's unclear at this point what we're losing by not being able to decode that opcode. Reimplement function calls on amd64-windows
This patch provides a standalone implementation of function calls
on amd64-windows, instead of providing some bits and pieces hooking
into the function call implementation meant for sysV (in amd64-tdep).
It makes better sense to do it this way, because the two ABIs are
actually very different; for instance, the concept of argument
classification, which is so central in the sysV ABI and drove the
the implementation in amd64-tdep, makes no sense for Windows. It
is therefore better for the Windows implementation to be completely
separate, rather than rely on adaptations of the sysV implementation.
