This is for add_setshow_boolean_cmd as well as the gdb::option interface.

Philippe Waroquiers 590042fc45 Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants:
  * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character.
  * The last character of a command help is not a newline character.

Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of :
 [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text
 https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html
but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then.

Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above
invariants.

Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line
of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.'
or ',' character.

This was giving inconsistent results :
  * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated,
    sometimes not.
  * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be
    readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first
    '.' or ',' character.

This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems:
< catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names
< down-silently -- Same as the `down' command
while the new help is:
> catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised.
> catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled.
> catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers.
> down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything.

Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline
character, but this was not respected by all commands.
The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences.
So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the
end of %OPTIONS% replacement.

This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants
given above.

It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs.

Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by
'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command
help) now outputs the full first line of a command help.

This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs.
There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot
of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings).

Tom Tromey 268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory.  The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top.  This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory.  However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

Pedro Alves 2daf894ed0 "set print raw frame-arguments" -> "set print raw-frame-arguments"
A following patch will introduce options for the "backtrace" command,
based on some "set print" and "set backtrace" settings.  There's one
setting in particular that is a bit annoying if we want to describe
the backtrace options and the settings commands using the same data
structures:

  "set print raw frame-arguments"

The problem is that space between "raw" and "frame-arguments".

Calling the option

  "bt -raw frame-arguments"

would be odd.  So I'm calling the option

  "bt -raw-frame-arguments"

instead.

And for consistency, this patch renames the set/show commands to:

 "set print raw-frame-arguments"
 "show print raw-frame-arguments"

I.e., dash instead of space.  The old commands are left in place, but
marked deprecated.

We need to adjust a couple testcases, because the relevant tests use
gdb_test_no_output and the old commands are no longer silent:

  (gdb) set print raw frame-arguments on
  Warning: command 'set print raw frame-arguments' is deprecated.
  Use 'set print raw-frame-arguments'.

Pedro Alves 9d0faba9f5 Introduce generic command options framework
This commit adds a generic command options framework, that makes it
easy enough to add '-'-style options to commands in a uniform way,
instead of each command implementing option parsing in its own way.

Options are defined in arrays of option_def objects (for option
definition), and the same options definitions are used for supporting
TAB completion, and also for generating the relevant help fragment of
the "help" command.  See the gdb::options::build_help function, which
returns a string with the result of replacing %OPTIONS% in a template
string with an auto-generated "help" string fragment for all the
passed-in options.

Since most options in GDB are in the form of "-OPT", with a single
dash, this is the format that the framework supports.

I like to think of gdb's "-OPT" as the equivalent to getopt's long
options format ("--OPT"), and gdb's "/" as the equivalent to getopt's
short options format.  getopt's short options format allows mixing
several one-character options, like "ls -als", kind of similar to
gdb's "x /FMT" and "disassemble /MOD", etc.  While with gdb's "-"
options, the option is expected to have a full name, and to be
abbreviatable.  E.g., "watch -location", "break -function main", etc.

This patch only deals with "-" options.  The above comment serves more
to disclose why I don't think we should support mixing several
unrelated options in a single "-" option invocation, like "thread
apply -qcs" instead of "thread apply -q -c -s".

The following patches will add uses of the infrastructure to several
key commands.  Most notably, "print", "compile print", "backtrace",
"frame apply" and "thread apply".  I tried to add options to several
commands in order to make sure the framework didn't leave that many
open holes open.

Options use the same type as set commands -- enum var_types.  So
boolean options are var_boolean, enum options are var_enum, etc.  The
idea is to share code between settings commands and command options.
The "print" options will be based on the "set print" commands, and
their names will be the same.  Actually, their definitions will be the
same too.  There is a function to create "set/show" commands from an
array for option definitions:

Other features:

 - You can use the "--" delimiter to explicitly indicate end of
   options.  Several existing commands use this token sequence for
   this effect already, so this just standardizes it.

 - You can shorten option names, as long as unambiguous.  Currently,
   some commands allow this (e.g., break -function), while others do
   not (thread apply all -ascending).  As GDB allows abbreviating
   command names and other things, it feels more GDB-ish to allow
   abbreviating option names too, to me.

 - For boolean options, 0/1 stands for off/on, just like with boolean
   "set" commands.

 - For boolean options, "true" is implied, just like with boolean "set
   commands.

These are the option types supported, with a few examples:

 - boolean options (var_boolean).  The option's argument is optional.

   (gdb) print -pretty on -- *obj
   (gdb) print -pretty off -- *obj
   (gdb) print -p -- *obj
   (gdb) print -p 0 -- *obj

 - flag options (like var_boolean, but no option argument (on/off))

   (gdb) thread apply all -s COMMAND

 - enum options  (var_enum)

   (gdb) bt -entry-values compact
   (gdb) bt -e c

 - uinteger options (var_uinteger)

   (gdb) print -elements 100 -- *obj
   (gdb) print -e 100 -- *obj
   (gdb) print -elements unlimited -- *obj
   (gdb) print -e u -- *obj

 - zuinteger-unlimited options (var_zuinteger_unlimited)

   (gdb) print -max-depth 100 -- obj
   (gdb) print -max-depth -1 -- obj
   (gdb) print -max-depth unlimited -- obj

Other var_types could be supported, of course.  These were just the
types that I needed for the commands that I ported over, in the
following patches.

It was interesting (and unfortunate) to find that we need at least 3
different modes to cover the existing commands:

- Commands that require ending options with "--" if you specify any
  option: "print" and "compile print".

- Commands that do not want to require "--", and want to error out if
  you specify an unknown option (i.e., an unknown argument that starts
  with '-'): "compile code" / "compile file".

- Commands that do not want to require "--", and want to process
  unknown options themselves: "bt", because of "bt -COUNT",
  "thread/frame apply", because "-" is a valid command.

The different behavior is encoded in the process_options_mode enum,
passed to process_options/complete_options.

For testing, this patch adds one representative maintenance command
for each of the process_options_mode values, that are used by the
testsuite to exercise the options framework:

and adds another command to help with TAB-completion testing:

Pedro Alves 597bf39df9 Remove "show" command completers, "set" command completers for string commands
The default command completer is symbol_completer, but it makes no
sense for a "show" command to complete on symbols, or anything else,
really.

I wonder whether we should instead make the default be no completer.
That seems like a much larger/complicated audit/change, so I'd like to
move forward with this version, as it'll be covered by tests.  I
noticed this because a following patch will add a new
gdb.base/settings.exp testcase that exercises all sorts of details of
settings commands, including completing the show commands, using new
representative "maint test-settings <type or settings command>"
commands.

Also remove the completer for var_string and var_string_noescape
commands.  No point in completing symbols when GDB is expecting a
string.

Philippe Waroquiers 66d8c86285 Improve usability and/or readibility of help and apropos output.
The "help" command can output long list of command names or classes.
Use the title style to style the command names or classes to make
the output more readable.

Similarly, change "apropos" command to also style the command names.

It is sometimes unclear why "apropos REGEXP" lists some commands,
and then the user has to manually do 'help command' for all commands
listed by "apropos" to see more details about the matching commands.

=> Add an optional flag -v so that "apropos -v REGEXP":
  * outputs the full documentation of matching commands.
  * highlights the documentation parts matching REGEXP.

The pipe command allows to run a GDB command, and pipe its output
to a shell command:
  (gdb) help pipe
  Send the output of a gdb command to a shell command.
  Usage: | [COMMAND] | SHELL_COMMAND
  Usage: | -d DELIM COMMAND DELIM SHELL_COMMAND
  Usage: pipe [COMMAND] | SHELL_COMMAND
  Usage: pipe -d DELIM COMMAND DELIM SHELL_COMMAND

  Executes COMMAND and sends its output to SHELL_COMMAND.

  The -d option indicates to use the string DELIM to separate COMMAND
  from SHELL_COMMAND, in alternative to |.  This is useful in
  case COMMAND contains a | character.

  With no COMMAND, repeat the last executed command
  and send its output to SHELL_COMMAND.
  (gdb)

For example:
  (gdb) pipe print some_data_structure | grep -B3 -A3 something

The pipe character is defined as an alias for pipe command, so that
the above can be typed as:
  (gdb) | print some_data_structure | grep -B3 -A3 something

If no GDB COMMAND is given, then the previous command is relaunched,
and its output is sent to the given SHELL_COMMAND.

This also defines convenience vars $_shell_exitcode and $_shell_exitsignal
to record the exit code and exit signal of the last shell command
launched by GDB e.g. by "shell", "pipe", ...

Joel Brobecker 42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Andrew Burgess f67ffa6a78 gdb: Change how frames are selected for 'frame' and 'info frame'.
The 'frame' command, and thanks to code reuse the 'info frame' and
'select-frame' commands, currently have an overloaded mechanism for
selecting a frame.

These commands take one or two parameters, if it's one parameter then
we first try to use the parameter as an integer to select a frame by
level (or depth in the stack).  If that fails then we treat the
parameter as an address and try to select a stack frame by
stack-address.  If we still have not selected a stack frame, or we
initially had two parameters, then GDB allows the user to view a stack
frame that is not part of the current backtrace.  Internally, a new
frame is created with the given stack and pc addresses, and this is
shown to the user.

The result of this is that a typo by the user, entering the wrong stack
frame level for example, can result in a brand new frame being viewed
rather than an error.

The purpose of this commit is to remove this overloading, while still
offering the same functionality through some new sub-commands.  By
making the default behaviour of 'frame' (and friends) be to select a
stack frame by level index, it is hoped that enough
backwards-compatibility is maintained that users will not be overly
inconvenienced.

The 'frame', 'select-frame', and 'info frame' commands now all take a
frame specification string as an argument, this string can be any of the
following:

  (1) An integer.  This is treated as a frame level.  If a frame for
  that level does not exist then the user gets an error.

  (2) A string like 'level <LEVEL>', where <LEVEL> is a frame level
  as in option (1) above.

  (3) A string like 'address <STACK-ADDRESS>', where <STACK-ADDRESS>
  is a stack-frame address.  If there is no frame for this address
  then the user gets an error.

  (4) A string like 'function <NAME>', where <NAME> is a function name,
  the inner most frame for function <NAME> is selected.  If there is no
  frame for function <NAME> then the user gets an error.

  (5) A string like 'view <STACK-ADDRESS>', this views a new frame
  with stack address <STACK-ADDRESS>.

  (6) A string like 'view <STACK-ADDRESS> <PC-ADDRESS>', this views
  a new frame with stack address <STACK-ADDRESS> and the pc <PC-ADDRESS>.

This change assumes that the most common use of the commands like
'frame' is to select a frame by frame level, it is for this reason
that this is the behaviour that is kept for backwards compatibility.
Any of the alternative behaviours, which are assumed to be less used,
now require a change in user behaviour.

The MI command '-stack-select-frame' has not been changed.  This
ensures that we maintain backwards compatibility for existing
frontends.

Pedro Alves 60a20c1907 Factor out final completion match string building
We have several places doing essentially the same thing; factor them
out to a central place.  Some of the places overallocate for no good
reason, or use strcat unnecessarily.  The centralized version is more
precise and to the point.

(I considered making the gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr overload version of
make_completer_match_str try to realloc (not xrealloc) probably
avoiding an allocation in most cases, but that'd be probably overdoing
it, and also, now that I'm writing this I thought I'd try to see how
could we ever get to filename_completer with "text != word", but I
couldn't figure it out.  Running the testsuite with 'gdb_assert (text
== word);' never tripped on the assertion either.  So post gdb 8.1,
I'll probably propose a patch to simplify filename_completer a bit,
and the gdb::unique_xmalloc_str overload can be removed then.)

Simon Marchi 798a7429f9 Remove some unused variables
This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused.  I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as

  struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);

in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect.  I
removed others that I considered more low-risk, such as:

  struct gdbarch *gdbarch = get_objfile_arch (objfile);

I tested building with Python 2/Python 3/no Python, with/without expat,
with/without libipt and with/without babeltrace.

Tom Tromey 5fed81ff35 Remove cmd_cfunc_ftype
This removes cmd_cfunc_ftype and the non-const overload of add_cmd;
then fixes up the fallout.

For the most part this patch is straightforward.  There are a few
files (go32-nat.c, windows-nat.c, and gnu-nat.c) that I could not
compile; so I made a best effort there.

This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.

In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors".  These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.

This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.

Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build.  So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.

Tested by rebuilding.

Pedro Alves eb3ff9a551 Introduce class completion_tracker & rewrite completion<->readline interaction
This patch reworks the whole completion machinery, and prepares it
for later enhancements.

Adds a new "completion_tracker" class that is meant to hold everything
about the state of the current completion operation.

This class now has the responsibility of tracking the list of
completion matches, and checking whether the max completions limit has
been reached.  You can look at this as this patch starting out by
C++fying the existing "completion_tracker" in symtab.c (it's just an
htab_t typedef currently), moving it to completer.h/c, and then making
it a class/generalizing/enhancing it.

Unlike with the current tracking, completion_tracker now checks
whether the limit has been reached on each completion match list
insertion.  This both simplifies the max-completions handling code
(maybe_add_completion_enum is gone, for example), and is a
prerequisite for follow up patches.

The current completion_tracker is only used for symbol completions,
and the symbol code gets at the current instance via globals.  This
patch cleans that up by adding a completion_tracker reference to the
signature of the completion functions, and passing the tracker around
everywhere necessary.

Then, the patch changes how the completion match list is handed over
to readline.  Currently, we're using the rl_completion_entry_function
readline entry point, and the patch switches to
rl_attempted_completion_function.  A following patch will want to let
GDB itself decide the common completion prefix between all matches
(what readline calls the "lowest common denominator"), instead of
having readline compute it, and that's not possible with the
rl_completion_entry_function entry point.  Also,
rl_attempted_completion_function lets GDB hand over the match list to
readline as an array in one go instead of passing down matches one by
one, so from that angle it's a nicer entry point anyway.

Lastly, the patch catches exceptions around the readline entry points,
because we can't let C++ exceptions cross readline.  We handle that in
the readline input entry point, but the completion entry point isn't
guarded, so GDB can abort if completion throws.  E.g., in current
master:

Pedro Alves 6e1dbf8cda Clean up "completer_handle_brkchars" callback handling
This patch cleans up "completer_handle_brkchars" callback handling:

- Renames the function typedef to better match its intent:
  completer_ftype_void ->  completer_handle_brkchars_ftype

- Factors out common code in complete_line_internal handling the
  "handle_brkchars" callback to a separate function.

- Centralizes all the "completer method" to "handle_brkchars method"
  mapping in a single function.

Yao Qi 21873064e8 Add alias command to cmd_list_element
When we add alias command, we call add_alias_cmd and pass the alias name
and command name.  This implicitly requires the command and its prefix
commands are already added to cmdlist.  This may not be true, for example,

  add_com_alias ("tty", "set inferior-tty", class_alias, 0);

"inferior-tty" command is added to setlist, but setlist may not be added
to cmdlist (It depends on the order of related _initialize_XXX functions
called) so that we can't find "set inferior-tty" from cmdlist.

This patch fixes this problem by passing cmd_list_element of "inferior-tty"
to add_alias_cmd, so that cmd_list_element of "inferior-tty" doesn't have
to be reachable from cmdlist at that moment.

Antoine Tremblay 4034d0ff52 Emit inferior, thread and frame selection events to all UIs
With this patch, when an inferior, thread or frame is explicitly
selected by the user, notifications will appear on all CLI and MI UIs.
When a GDB console is integrated in a front-end, this allows the
front-end to follow a selection made by the user ont he CLI, and it
informs the user about selection changes made behind the scenes by the
front-end.

This patch addresses PR gdb/20487.

In order to communicate frame changes to the front-end, this patch adds
a new field to the =thread-selected event for the selected frame.  The
idea is that since inferior/thread/frame can be seen as a composition,
it makes sense to send them together in the same event.  The vision
would be to eventually send the inferior information as well, if we find
that it's needed, although the "=thread-selected" event would be
ill-named for that job.

Front-ends need to handle this new field if they want to follow the
frame selection changes that originate from the console.  The format of
the frame attribute is the same as what is found in the *stopped events.

Here's a detailed example for each command and the events they generate:

no way to select the inferior in pure MI.

select, the =thread-selected event does not apply...

Internal implementation detail: this patch makes it possible to suppress
notifications caused by a CLI command, like what is done in mi-interp.c.
This means that it's now possible to use the
add_com_suppress_notification function to register a command with some
event suppressed.  It is used to implement the select-frame command in
this patch.

The function command_notifies_uscc_observer was added to extract
the rather complicated logical expression from the if statement.  It is
also now clearer what that logic does: if the command used by the user
already notifies the user_selected_context_changed observer, there is
not need to notify it again.  It therefore protects again emitting the
event twice.

No regressions, tested on ubuntu 14.04 x86 with target boards unix and
native-extended-gdbserver.

In the following code:

    struct symbol *wsym = (struct symbol *) NULL;

the cast of NULL is redundant, it adds noise, and is just one more thing
to change if the type of wsym ever changes.  There are a relatively
small number of places in gdb where the above code pattern is used.
Usually the cast is removed like this:

    struct symbol *wsym = NULL;

This commit updates all the places within the gdb/cli directory where we
cast NULL during assignment, removing the cast.

Simon Marchi 8d7493201c Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort.  The idea is
to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the
equivalents in the XNEW family.  This avoids adding an explicit cast, so
it keeps the code a bit more readable.  Some of them also map relatively
well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be
possible to do scripted replacements if needed.

I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or
multiple "objects".  Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or
buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW).

buildbot or people complaining that I broke their gdb.

Simon Marchi f486487f55 Mostly trivial enum fixes
This is a patch I extracted from Pedro's C++ branch.  It contains the
most trivial enum fixes, where an integer type/value was used instead
of the appropriate enum type/value.  It fixes many C++ errors, since
in C++ you can't mix integers and enums implicitely.

Regardless of the C++ conversion, I think this is a good cleanup to make
use of the appropriate enum types.

Regression-tested on native x86_64.

The commands that enables aren't even documented in the manual.
Judging from that, I assume that only wdb users would ever really
be using the --xdb switch.

I think it's time to drop "support" for the --xdb switch too.  I
looked through the commands that that exposes, the only that looked
potentially interesting was "go", but then it's just an alias
for "tbreak+jump", which can easily be done with "define go...end".
I'd rather free up the "go" name for something potentially
more interesting (either run control, or maybe even unrelated,
e.g., for golang).

Pedro Alves fe978cb071 C++ keyword cleanliness, mostly auto-generated
This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are
reserved keywords in C++.

Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script.
Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc.
And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running
the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not
result in the exact same output.  I don't think that matters anyway.
