Alan Modra fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

Christian Biesinger 67547d896b Change the type of copy_names from int to bool
This parameter is really a boolean, so change the type accordingly
and update the callers.

This is for symbol_set_names, add_psymbol_to_bcache, and
add_psymbol_to_list.

minimal_symbol_reader::record_full was already passing a bool
to symbol_set_names.

Alan Modra b16c44debc bfd_get_filename
This macro says:
/* Cast from const char * to char * so that caller can assign to

Tom Tromey 0cf9feb996 Introduce obstack_strndup
This introduces obstack_strndup and changes gdb to use it.

Note that obstack_strndup works like savestring, and not exactly like
xstrndup. The difference is that obstack_strndup uses the passed-in
length, while xstrndup uses strnlen to choose the length.

Tom Tromey 22a20dca3a Change dbxread.c to use type-safe registry
This changes dbxread.c to use the type-safe registry. In a couple of
spots, you'll see that dbx_objfile_data_key.emplace is called but the
result is not used; this is because those functions refer to the key
via the various DBX_* macros.

Tom Tromey caa429d81a Delay allocation of dbx_symfile_info
I noticed that elfread.c always allocates a dbx_symfile_info, even
though this is only ever needed in the unusual case of reading stabs
in ELF.

This patch moves the allocation into dbxread.c, and applies the same
treatment to similar code in coffread.c.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

Joel Brobecker 42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

Tom Tromey 7974897237 Make psymbols and psymtabs independent of the program space
This patch finally makes partial symbols and partial symtabs
independent of the program space.

Specifically:

It changes add_psymbol_to_list to accept a section index, and changes
the psymbol readers to pass this. At the same time it removes the
code to add the objfile's section offset to the psymbol.

It adds an objfile argument to the psymtab textlow and texthigh
accessors and changes some code to use the raw variants instead.

It removes the "relocate" method from struct quick_symbol_functions,
as it is no longer needed any more.

It changes partial_symbol::address so that the relevant offset is now
applied at the point of use.

Tom Tromey 52948f01e4 Add validity bits for psymtab high and low fields
Right now some psymtab code checks whether a psymtab's textlow or
texthigh fields are valid by comparing against 0.

I imagine this is mildly wrong in the current environment, but once
psymtabs are relocated dynamically, it will no longer be correct,
because it will be much more normal to see a psymtab with a textlow of
zero -- this will just mean it appears at the start of the text
section.

This patch introduces validity bits to handle this situation more
nicely, and changes users of the code to follow.

Tom Tromey 4ae976d1df Introduce accessors for psymtab high and low fields
This introduces accessors for the partial symbol table textlow and
texthigh fields. This lets us later arrange to relocate these values
at their point of use.

I did this conversion by renaming the fields. I didn't rename the
fields back afterward, thinking that on the off chance that someone
has a patch touching this area, then a merge would helpfully break
their compile.

I looked at making the fields private, but this interferes with the
memset in allocate_psymtab, and I didn't want to chase this down.
This conversion can be done later if need be.

Tom Tromey 08994e1ddc Remove dead code in end_psymtab
I noticed that there is a bit of dead code in end_psymtab.
This deletes it.

Normally I would investigate a fix for the code. However, considering
that the code has been this way a long time (since the first import to
sourceware) and considering that dbxread.c is not as important any
more, I think it's safe to just consider that there's no bug.

Tom Tromey 0baae8dbd3 Introduce buildsym-legacy.h
This introduces a new header, buildsym-legacy.h, and changes all the
symbol readers to use it. The idea is to put the function-based
interface, that relies on the buildsym_compunit global, into a
separate header. Then when a symbol reader is updated to use the new
interface, it can simply not include buildsym-legacy.h, so it's easy
to be sure that the new API is used everywhere.

Tom Tromey b98664d386 Remove symfile_complaints
The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint
topics. However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been
defined. Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new
complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is
reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to
debuginfo reading.

This patch removes symfile_complaints and updates all the callers.
Some of these spots should perhaps be calls to warning instead, but I
did not make that change.

Pedro Alves 5ffa079369 Per-language symbol name hashing algorithm
Currently, we have a mess of symbol name hashing/comparison routines.
There's msymbol_hash for mangled names, and dict_hash and
msymbol_hash_iw for demangled names. Then there's strcmp_iw,
strcmp_iw_ordered and Ada's full_match/wild_match, which all have to
agree with the hashing routines. That's why dict_hash is really about
Ada names. From the inconsistency department, minimal symbol hashing
doesn't go via dict_hash, so Ada's wild matching can't ever work with
minimal symbols.

This patch starts fixing this, by doing two things:

#1 - adds a language vector method to let each language decide how to
     compute a symbol name hash.

#2 - makes dictionaries know the language of the symbols they hold,
and then use the dictionaries language to decide which hashing
     method to use.

For now, this is just scaffolding, since all languages install the
default method. The series will make C++ install its own hashing
method later on, and will add per-language symbol name comparison
routines too.

This patch was originally based on a patch that Keith wrote for the
libcc1/C++ WIP support.

Simon Marchi af5bf4ada4 Replace psymbol_allocation_list with std::vector
psymbol_allocation_list is basically a vector implementation. We can
replace it with an std::vector, now that objfile has been C++-ified.

I sent this to the buildbot, there are a few suspicious failures, but
I don't think they are related to this patch. For example on powerpc:

new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: syscall execve has returned
new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: continue to main
new FAIL: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp: execve: continue until exit

I get the same failures when testing manually on gcc112, without this
patch.

Pedro Alves 2f408ecb92 Use ui_file_as_string throughout more
This replaces most of the remaining ui_file_xstrdup calls with
ui_file_as_string calls. Whenever a call was replaced, that led to a
cascade of other necessary adjustments throughout, to make the code
use std::string instead of raw pointers. And then whenever I added a
std::string as member of a struct, I needed to adjust
allocation/destruction of said struct to use new/delete instead of
xmalloc/xfree.

The stopping point was once gdb built again. These doesn't seem to be
a way to reasonably split this out further.

Maybe-not-obvious changes:

 - demangle_for_lookup returns a cleanup today. To get rid of that,
and avoid unnecessary string dupping/copying, this introduces a
demangle_result_storage type that the caller instantiates and
   passes to demangle_for_lookup.

 - Many methods returned a "char *" to indicate that the caller owns
the memory and must free it. Those are switched to return a
std::string instead. Methods that return a "view" into some
internal string return a "const char *" instead. I.e., we only
   copy/allocate when necessary.

Pedro Alves b15cc25cbe Make symfile_add_flags and objfile->flags strongly typed
This makes these flag types be "enum flag" types. The benefit is
making use of C++'s stronger typing -- mixing the flags types by
mistake errors at compile time.

This caught one old bug in symbol_file_add_main_1 already, fixed by
this patch as well:

  @@ -1318,7 +1326,7 @@ symbol_file_add_main_1 (const char *args, int from_tty, int flags)
	what is frameless. */
     reinit_frame_cache ();

  -  if ((flags & SYMFILE_NO_READ) == 0)
  +  if ((add_flags & SYMFILE_NO_READ) == 0)
       set_initial_language ();
   }

Above, "flags" are objfile flags, not symfile_add_flags. So that was
actually checking for "flag & OBJF_PSYMTABS_READ", which has the same
value as SYMFILE_NO_READ...

I moved the flags definitions to separate files to break circular
dependencies.

Built with --enable-targets=all and tested on x86-64 Fedora 23.

Tom Tromey d25e871993 Change minimal_symbol_reader to store objfile
This changes minimal_symbol_reader to require the objfile to be
passed to the constructor. The class now records the objfile and
automatically uses it later in "install".

This is a minor cleanup that will come in useful in the next patch.
It is separate from the first patch to keep that one a bit simpler to
understand.
