Note this has to work with data and function pointers. In C++11 we
may perhaps do something a bit safer, but we're not there yet, and I
don't think it really matters. For now just always do a simple
C-style cast in host_address_to_string itself. No point in adding a

Currently, when remote debugging, if you type Ctrl-C just while the
target stopped for an internal event, and GDB is busy doing something
that takes a while (e.g., fetching chunks of a shared library off of
the target, with vFile, to process ELF headers and debug info), the
Ctrl-C is lost.
The patch hooks up the QUIT macro to a new target method that lets the
target react to the double-Ctrl-C before the event loop is reached,
which allows reacting to a double-Ctrl-C even when GDB is busy doing
some long operation and not waiting for a stop reply. That end result
is:

If, however, GDB is waiting for a stop reply (because the target has
been resumed, with e.g., vCont;c), but the target isn't responding, we
now get:

This offers to disconnect, because when we're waiting for a stop
reply, there's nothing else we can send the target other than an
interrupt request. And if that doesn't work, there's nothing else we
can do.
The Ctrl-C is presently lost because until we get to a user-visible
stop, the SIGINT handler that is installed is the one that forwards
the interrupt to the remote side, with the \003 "packet" [1]. But,
gdbserver ignores an interrupt request if the program is stopped.
Still, even if it didn't, the server can only report back a
stop-because-of-SIGINT when the program is next resumed. And it may
take a while to actually re-resume the target.
[1] - In the old sync days, the remote target would react to a
double-Ctrl-C by asking users whether they wanted to give up waiting
and disconnect. The code is still there, but it it isn't reacheable
on most hosts, which support serial connections in async mode
(probably only DJGPP doesn't). Even then, in sync mode, remote.c's
SIGINT handler is only installed while the target is resumed, and is
removed as soon as the target sends back a stop reply. That means
that a Ctrl-C just while GDB is processing an internal event can end
up with an odd "Quit" at the prompt instead of "Program stopped by
SIGINT". In contrast, in async mode, remote.c's SIGINT handler is set
up as long as target_terminal_inferior or
target_terminal_ours_for_output are in effect (IOW, until we get a
user-visible stop and call target_terminal_ours), so the user
shouldn't get back a spurious Quit. However, it's still desirable to
be able to interrupt a long-running GDB operation, if GDB takes a
while to re-resume the target or get back to the event loop.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20.

We don't really need the POSIX compliance, so this patch prepares us
to simply not use gnulib's 'struct timeval' replacement once a more
recent gnulib is imported, thus preserving the current behavior, by
adding a sys/time.h wrapper header that undefs gnulib's replacements,
and including that everywhere instead.
The SIZE -> OSIZE change is necessary because newer gnulib's
sys/time.h also includes windows.h/winsock2.h, which defines a
conflicting SIZE symbol.
Cross build-tested mingw-w64 32-bit and 64-bit.
Regtested on x86_64 Fedora 20.

casts from integer to enum types, where it is really the intention to do

An exception to that is the casts in regcache.c. It seems to me like
struct regcache's register_status field could be a pointer to an array of
enum register_status. Doing so would waste a bit of memory (4 bytes
used by the enum vs 1 byte used by the current signed char, for each
register). If we switch to C++11 one day, we can define the underlying
type of an enum type, so we could have the best of both worlds.

The commands that enables aren't even documented in the manual.
Judging from that, I assume that only wdb users would ever really
be using the --xdb switch.
I think it's time to drop "support" for the --xdb switch too. I
looked through the commands that that exposes, the only that looked
potentially interesting was "go", but then it's just an alias
for "tbreak+jump", which can easily be done with "define go...end".
I'd rather free up the "go" name for something potentially
more interesting (either run control, or maybe even unrelated,
e.g., for golang).

This specific issue wouldn't occur if we included curses.h before
including stdbool.h, and I looked at that just to be complete.
Here is a small schematic representation of the include logic:
* utils.c:
-> defs.h -> utils.h -> stdbool.h
-> gdb_curses.h -> curses.h
Because defs.h should always be first on the list, it means that
stdbool.h will always necessarily be included ahead of curses.h.
But, thinking beyond this very specific issue, it shows that using
stdbool.h is going to cause problems on these systems until either
GCC fixes those includes in a way that makes them work; or we switch
to C++.
In the meantime, I think the path of least resistance is to revert
the use of stdbool.h, and use integers, the way we've done up until
now. The benefits of using type "bool" are modest, IMO, so not
a great loss, and a temporary one.

Both dwarf2read.c (checkproducer) and utils.c (producer_is_gcc_ge_4)
implemented a GCC producer parser that tried to extract the major and minor
version of GCC. Merge them into one GCC producer parser used by both. Also
allow digits in the identifier after "GNU " such as used by GCC5 like:

This patch primarily rewrites defaulted_query() to use
gdb_readline_wrapper() to prompt the user for input, like
prompt_for_continue() does. The motivation for this rewrite is to be
able to reuse the default query hook in TUI, obviating the need for a
custom TUI query hook.
However, having TUI use the default query mechanism exposed a couple of
latent bugs in tui_redisplay_readline() related to the handling of
multi-line prompts, in particular GDB's multi-line quit prompt.
The first issue is an off-by-one error in the calculation of the height
of the prompt. The check in question should be col <= prev_col, not c <
prev_col, to properly account for the case when a prompt contains
multiple consecutive newlines. Failing to do so makes TUI have the
wrong idea of the vertical height of the prompt. This patch fixes the
column check.
The second issue is that cur_line does not get updated to reflect the
cursor position if the user's prompt cursor is at the end of the prompt
(i.e. if rl_point == rl_end). cur_line only gets updated if rl_point
lies between 0..rl_end-1 because that is the bounds of the for loop
responsible for updating cur_line. This patch changes the loop's bounds
to 0..rl_end so that cur_line always gets updated.
With these two bug fixes out of the way, the default query mechanism
works well in TUI even with multi-line prompts like GDB's quit prompt.

warning will crash if called before the first call to set_width. This
commit makes the warning usable from the moment gdb_stderr is set up.

internal_vproblem can be called (via malloc_failure) from almost the
first line of captured_main, but it will crash if called before the
first call to set_width. This commit makes internal_vproblem work
at any time.
There are two parts to this. If called before gdb_stderr is set up,
internal_vproblem will fall back to printing the message on regular
stderr and aborting. If called after gdb_stderr is set up but before
filtered printing is set up, internal_vproblem will operate as usual
except that it can not query whether to quit and/or dump core so it
defaults to doing both.

While working on internal_vproblem I noticed that the error/warning
message is suppressed if problem->should_quit is internal_problem_yes
or internal_problem_no. This behaviour seems wrong. This commit

* utils.c (internal_vproblem): Always print the message.
GDB and gdbserver have functions named "fatal" that are used in
completely different ways. In gdbserver "fatal" is used to handle
critical errors: it differs from "error" in that "fatal" causes
gdbserver to exit whereas "error" does not. In GDB "fatal" is used
to abort the current operation and return to the command level.
This is implemented by throwing a non-error "RETURN_QUIT" exception.
This commit removes GDB's "fatal" and "vfatal" functions entirely.
The exception-throwing function "throw_vfatal" is renamed as
"throw_vquit", and a new convenience function "throw_quit" is added.
The small number of calls to "fatal" are replaced with calls to
"throw_quit", making what is happening more obvious.
This commit also modifies GDB's "throw_error" to call "throw_verror"
rather than calling "throw_it" directly. This change means the
assignment of RETURN_ERROR as the exception type now happens in
precisely one place in GDB rather than two.

The bug is that some code in utils.c was not updated during the target
delegation change:

After the delegation change, to_terminal_ours will never be NULL.
I think this bug can be seen before the target delegation change by
enabling target debugging -- this would also cause to_terminal_ours to
be non-NULL.
The fix is to introduce a new target_supports_terminal_ours function,
that properly checks the target stack. This is not perhaps ideal, but
I think is a reasonable-enough approach, and in keeping with some
other existing code of the same form.
This patch also fixes a similar bug in target_supports_delete_record.

When the target is resumed in the foreground, we put the inferior's
terminal settings into effect, and remove stdin from the event loop.
When the target stops, we put GDB's terminal settings into effect
again, and re-register stdin in the event loop, ready for user input.
The former is done by target_terminal_inferior, and the latter by
target_terminal_ours.
There's an intermediate -- target_terminal_ours_for_output -- that is
called when printing output related to target events, and we don't
know yet whether we'll stop the program. That puts our terminal
settings into effect, enough to get proper results from our output,
but leaves input wired into the inferior.
If such output paginates, then we need the full target_terminal_ours
in order for the user to be able to provide input to answer the
pagination query.
The test in this commit hangs in async-capable targets without the fix
(as the user/test can't answer the pagination query). It doesn't hang
on sync targets because on those we don't unregister stdin from the
event loop while the target is running (because we block in
target_wait instead of in the event loop in that case).

Here is an example of a =library-loaded event with an ill-named directory,
/tmp/how"are\you (the problem is present with every directory on Windows since
it uses backslashes as a path separator). The result will be the following:
=library-loaded,id="/tmp/how"are\\you/libexpat.so.1",...
The " between 'how' and 'are' should be escaped.
Another bad behavior is double escaping in =breakpoint-created, for example:
=breakpoint-created,bkpt={...,fullname="/tmp/how\\"are\\\\you/test.c",...}
The two backslashes before 'how' should be one and the four before 'you' should
be two.
The reason for this is that when sending something to an MI console, escaping
can take place at two different moments (the actual escaping work is always
done in the printchar function):
1. When generating the content, if ui_out_field_* functions are used. Here,
fields are automatically quoted with " and properly escaped. At least
mi_field_string does it, not sure about mi_field_fmt, I need to investigate
further.
2. When gdb_flush is called, to send the data in the buffer of the console to
the actual output (stdout). At this point, mi_console_raw_packet takes the
whole string in the buffer, quotes it, and escapes all occurences of the
quoting character and backslashes. The event_channel does not specify a quoting
character, so quotes are not escaped here, only backslashes.
The problem with =library-loaded is that it does use fprintf_unfiltered, which
doesn't do escaping (so, no #1). When gdb_flush is called, backslashes are
escaped (#2).
The problem with =breakpoint-created is that it first uses ui_out_field_*
functions to generate its output, so backslashes and quotes are escaped there
(#1). backslashes are escaped again in #2, leading to an overdose of
backslashes.
In retrospect, there is no way escaping can be done reliably in
mi_console_raw_packet for data that is already formatted, such as
event_channel. At this point, there is no way to differentiate quotes that
delimit field values from those that should be escaped. In the case of other MI
consoles, it is ok since mi_console_raw_packet receives one big string that
should be quoted and escaped as a whole.
So, first part of the fix: for the MI channels that specify no quoting
character, no escaping at all should be done in mi_console_raw_packet (that's
the change in printchar, thanks to Yuanhui Zhang for this). For those channels,
whoever generates the content is responsible for proper quoting and escaping.
This will fix the =breakpoint-created kind of problem.
Second part of the fix is to make =library-loaded generate content that is
properly escaped. For this, we use ui_out_field_* functions, instead of one big
fprintf_unfiltered. =library-unloaded suffered from the same problem so it is
modified as well. There might be other events that need fixing too, but that's
all I found with a quick scan. Those that use fprintf_unfiltered but whose sole
variable data is a %d are not critical, since it won't generate a " or a \.
Finally, a test has been fixed, as it was expecting an erroneous output.
Otherwise, all other tests that were previously passing still pass (x86-64
linux).

This constifies the "args" argument to the target_ops to_attach
method.
I updated all instances of the method. I could not compile all of
them but I hand-inspected them. In all cases either the argument is
ignored, or it is passed to parse_pid_to_attach. (linux-nat does some
extra stuff, but that one I built...)
If you want to try it on your host of choice, please do so.
The code in parse_pid_to_attach seems a little bogus to me. If there
is a platform with a broken strtoul, we have better methods for fixing
the issue now. However, I left the code as is since it is clearly ok
to do so.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 20.
