Alan Modra	e310298cf3	PR25593, --as-needed breaks DT_NEEDED order with linker plugin This patch delays setting up DT_NEEDED dynamic tags until all object files and libraries have been opened and their symbols processed, rather than adding the tags while processing symbols. Tags are ordered according to the position of the associated library on the command line and linker scripts. It is still possible with --as-needed libs that are mentioned more than once for tags to be ordered according to which mention was needed. For example with "--as-needed a.so b.so c.so b.so" when b.so is not needed by a.so or any other prior object file but is needed by c.so, the order of tags will be "A C B". bfd/ PR 25593 * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_table): Rename "loaded" to "dyn_loaded". (bfd_elf_add_dt_needed_tag): Declare. * elf-strtab.c (_bfd_elf_strtab_restore): Handle NULL buf. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_add_dt_needed_tag): Make global and rename from elf_add_dt_needed_tag. Remove soname and doit param. (elf_link_add_object_symbols): Don't use elf_add_dt_needed_tag to see whether as-needed lib is already loaded, use dyn_loaded list instead. When saving and restoring around as-needed lib handle possibility that dynstr has not been initialised. Don't add DT_NEEDED tags here. Limit dyn_loaded list to dynamic libs. Mark libs loaded via DT_NEEDED entries of other libs with DYN_NO_NEEDED if they should not be mentioned in DT_NEEDED of the output. Alan Modra	f26a32876b	Dynamic TLS section symbols It is possible to create shared libraries on PowerPC using -ftls-model=inital-exec or -ftls-model=local-exec. The first is half reasonable, getting you a shared library that can't be dlopen'd but otherwise is reasonable. The second is quite bad. Not only do you lose being able to dlopen, the library also has dynamic text relocations. Worse, the TPREL16_LO, TPREL16_HA and other TPREL16 dynamic relocs emitted were wrong, resulting in wrong values being applied by ld.so. Using the first TLS section symbol in dynamic relocations for local TLS symbols doesn't work. It's wrong because TLS symbols used by TLS relocs have values relative to the TLS segment, whereas the TLS section symbols are addresses. This patch instead uses a symbol index of zero which is used elsewhere by PowerPC on dynamic TLS relocs. It's not strictly ABI compliant to use a non-TLS symbol with TLS relocs but symbol index zero can be interpreted as "no symbol". Not using the first TLS section symbol means it doesn't need to be dynamic. The patch also fixes a further problem with PowerPC32 dynamic TPREL16* relocs, which shouldn't have the symbol value in the addend as we do for non-TLS symbols. bfd/ * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_omit_section_dynsym_default): Don't keep tls_sec. Alan Modra	7f923b7fd2	ELF dynsyms Many ELF targets arrange to emit a number of section symbols in .dynsym for use by dynamic relocations. This happens before the dynamic relocations are output, and the need for those symbols determined. In most cases they are not needed. A proper analysis of the need for dynamic section symbols is target specific and tedious, so this patch just excludes them in the obvious case when no dynamic relocations are present. Alan Modra	fd161d860f	Define various symbols conditionally in shared libraries The values of symbols in shared libraries like _end, _edata, and __bss_start are generally not that useful outside of the shared library. This patch defines them conditionally with PROVIDE, since a shared library might need the local value. An example is glibc ld.so local access to "_begin", "_etext" and "_end". (ld.so gains access to the local values by making the references using hidden visibility. That makes the definitions hidden too.) We can't use PROVIDE_HIDDEN in the linker scripts because the shared library might need the value of the symbol in the executable. An example is freebsd libc dynamic access to "_end". These can go anywhere, but look silly in the m%Fiddle of a message, and choosing "%P%F:" in some messages but "%F%P:" in others leads to the likelihood of duplication in ld.pot. I've deliberately not fixed the "out of memory" errors since it's very unlikely that they will ever be complaining about not being able to allocate for a single entry, and a few others where the size is very unlikely to be 1 byte. Then there are messages like this one: "Out of %lu items there are %zu bucket clashes (longest of %zu entries).\n" I suppose this could be split into three parts, "Of %lu items ", "there are %zu bucket clashes ", and "(longest of %zu entries).\n", each part being printed separately, but that might not be ideal for sentence construction in other languages. H.J. Lu	5c3261b0e8	ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Maciej W. Rozycki	1f599d0e7b	ELF/LD: Avoid producing hidden and internal dynamic symbols Always turn hidden and internal symbols which have a dynamic index into local ones. This is required by the the ELF gABI[1]: "A hidden symbol contained in a relocatable object must be either removed or converted to STB_LOCAL binding by the link-editor when the relocatable object is included in an executable file or shared object." "An internal symbol contained in a relocatable object must be either removed or converted to STB_LOCAL binding by the link-editor when the relocatable object is included in an executable file or shared object." The ELF linker usually respects this requirement, however in the case where a dynamic symbol has been preallocated due to a reference of the default export class aka visibility from the object being linked, and then merged with a hidden or internal symbol definition from within the same object, then the original export class is carried over to the output dynamic symbol table, because while merging the generic ELF linker only converts affected dynamic symbols to local when they are defined or referenced by the object being linked and a dynamic object involved in the link both at a time. The dynamic symbol produced confuses then the dynamic loader at the run time -- the hidden or internal export class is ignored and the symbol follows preemption rules as with the default export class. In the MIPS target it happens when `mips_elf_record_global_got_symbol' creates a dynamic symbol when a call relocation is encountered. Additionally if the undefined symbol referred by such a relocation does specify the intended export class, then a local dynamic symbol is created instead, which is harmless and allowed, but useless. Normally no local dynamic symbols are created, except for a single dummy one at the beginning. Correct the problem by removing the extra check for a dynamic symbol being defined or referenced by the object being linked and a dynamic object involved in the link both at a time. The test cases included cover the internal and hidden symbol cases, as well as a protected symbol for a reference, the handling of which is unchanged by this fix. Both cases described above are covered, that is where an internal or hidden dynamic symbol is produced and where a local one is. NB this change affects CRIS results where some symbols in the static table produced in a final link are now converted from STV_HIDDEN to STB_LOCAL. This happens whenever the `elf_backend_hide_symbol' handler is called, so the affected symbols must have been chosen for entering into the dynamic symbol table, except in these test cases no such symbol table is produced. In fully linked binaries the static symbol table is only used for debugging though, so such a change is fine. Hence defer emission until we at least did the basic early checks that would lead to no such symbol getting emitted. This in particular avoids emitting such a symbol in the majority of (if not all) "ld -r" cases.
