Tom Tromey 14278e1fdb Change gdb_realpath to return a unique_xmalloc_ptr
This changes gdb_realpath to return a unique_xmalloc_ptr and fixes up
the callers. This allows removing some cleanups. This change by
itself caused xfullpath.exp to fail; and attempting to fix that ran
into various problems (like .get() being optimized out); so this patch
also rewrites xfullpath.exp to be a C++ selftest instead.

Tom Tromey 773a1edcd1 Introduce gdb_argv, a class wrapper for buildargv
This introduces gdb_argv, a class wrapping an "argv" pointer; that is,
a pointer to a NULL-terminated array of char*, where both the array
and each non-NULL element in the array are xmalloc'd.

This patch then changes most users of gdb_buildargv to use gdb_argv
instead.

Pedro Alves 47e77640be Make language_def O(1)
Profiling GDB with the rest of series applied, I saw calls to
language_def showing up high in some runs. The problem is that
language_def is O(N) currently, since walk the languages vector each
time to find the matching language_defn.

IMO, the add_language mechanism is pointless, because "enum language"
implies the core of GDB needs to know about all languages anyway. So
simply make the languages vector array be an array where each
element's index is the corresponding enum language enumerator. Note
that "local_language_defn" is gone along the way. It's just a copy of
"auto", so the new code simply maps one to the other. One fewer place
to update when we need to change the language vector...

Also, a while ago the output of "set language" was made out of order
as side effect of some other change. While I was at it, I made them
sorted again.

Pedro Alves 8268c77870 Eliminate make_cleanup_obstack_free, introduce auto_obstack
This commit eliminates make_cleanup_obstack_free, replacing it with a
new auto_obstack type that inherits obstack to add cdtors.

These changes in the parsers may not be obvious:

 -  obstack_init (&name_obstack);
 -  make_cleanup_obstack_free (&name_obstack);
 +  name_obstack.clear ();

Here, the 'name_obstack' variable is a global. The change means that
the obstack's contents from a previous parse will stay around until
the next parsing starts. I.e., memory won't be reclaimed until then.
I don't think that's a problem, these objects don't really grow much
at all.

The other option I tried was to add a separate type that is like
auto_obstack but manages an external obstack, just for those cases. I
like the current approach better as that other approach adds more
boilerplate and yet another type to learn.

Pedro Alves d7e747318f Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.

- mem_fileopen -> string_file

mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)

string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.

- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone

The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.

Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.

With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.

- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods

These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:

  -  stb = mem_fileopen ();
  -  fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s",
  -		      _("The valid values are:\n"),
  -		      regdesc,
  -		      _("The default is \"std\"."));
  +  string_file stb;
  +  stb.printf ("%s%s%s",
  +	      _("The valid values are:\n"),
  +	      regdesc,
  +	      _("The default is \"std\"."));

In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.)
calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".

- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects

This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this:

      struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w");
      if (filename == NULL)
 	perror_with_name (filename);
      cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file);
      // use file.
      do_cleanups (cleanups);

is replaced with this:

      stdio_file file;
      if (!file.open (filename, "w"))
 	perror_with_name (filename);
      // use file.

- odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to
  call to_fputs / to_write eliminated.

- Global null_stream object

A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to
"nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global
stream.

- TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated.  TUI's ui_file much simplified

The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

Tom Tromey 192b62ce0b Use class to manage BFD reference counts
This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used
to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to
use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or
cleanups.  This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref.

If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use
of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next
patch.

I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to
me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD.

I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is
correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. One goal
of this sort of automated reference counting, though, is to make it
more difficult to make logic errors; so hopefully the code is clear
now.

Pedro Alves dcb07cfa15 gdb: Use C++11 std::chrono
This patch fixes a few problems with GDB's time handling.

#1 - It avoids problems with gnulib's C++ namespace support

On MinGW, the struct timeval that should be passed to gnulib's
gettimeofday replacement is incompatible with libiberty's
timeval_sub/timeval_add. That's because gnulib also replaces "struct
timeval" with its own definition, while libiberty expects the
system's.

E.g., in code like this:

  gettimeofday (&prompt_ended, NULL);
  timeval_sub (&prompt_delta, &prompt_ended, &prompt_started);
  timeval_add (&prompt_for_continue_wait_time,
               &prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_delta);

That's currently handled in gdb by not using gnulib's gettimeofday at
all (see common/gdb_sys_time.h), but that #undef hack won't work with
if/when we enable gnulib's C++ namespace support, because that mode
adds compile time warnings for uses of ::gettimeofday, which are hard
errors with -Werror.

#2 - But there's an elephant in the room: gettimeofday is not monotonic...

We're using it to:

  a) check how long functions take, for performance analysis
  b) compute when in the future to fire events in the event-loop
  c) print debug timestamps

But that's exactly what gettimeofday is NOT meant for. Straight from
the man page:

~~~
       The time returned by gettimeofday() is affected by
       discontinuous jumps in the system time (e.g., if the system
       administrator manually changes the system time).  If you need a
       monotonically increasing clock, see clock_gettime(2).
~~~

std::chrono (part of the C++11 standard library) has a monotonic clock
exactly for such purposes (std::chrono::steady_clock). This commit
switches to use that instead of gettimeofday, fixing all the issues
mentioned above.

Pedro Alves 79aa2fe86f Make gdb_stdout&co be per UI
We need to have these send output to the proper UI.

However, this patch still make them look like globals. Kind of like
__thread variables, if you will. Changing everything throughout to
write something like current_ui->gdb_stdout instead would be massive
overkill, IMNSHO.

This leaves gdb_stdtargin/stdtarg/stdtargerr global, but maybe that was a
mistake, I'm not sure -- IIRC, MI formats target I/O differently, so
if we have a separate MI channel, then I guess target output should go
there instead of to gdb's stdout. OTOH, maybe GDB should send that
instead to "set inferior-tty", instead of multiplexing it over MI. We
can always fix those later when it gets clearer where they should go.

Catalin Udma e7ea3ec7c6 python: Use console format for output of gdb.execute command
When gdb is started in MI mode, the output of gdb.execute
command is in MI-format in case when it is executed from python stop
handler while for all other cases the output is in console-format.

To assure consistent output format, this is fixed by using the console
format for all python gdb command executions.

Pedro Alves b80c305316 Make host_address_to_string/gdb_print_host_address cast parameter to 'void *'
Fixes a set of errors like:

 ../../src/gdb/symfile-debug.c: In function ‘int debug_qf_map_symtabs_matching_filename(objfile*, const char*, const char*, int (*)(symtab*, void*), void*)’:
 ../../src/gdb/symfile-debug.c:137:39: error: invalid conversion from ‘int (*)(symtab*, void*)’ to ‘const void*’ [-fpermissive]
	host_address_to_string (callback),
					^

Note this has to work with data and function pointers. In C++11 we
may perhaps do something a bit safer, but we're not there yet, and I
don't think it really matters. For now just always do a simple
C-style cast in host_address_to_string itself. No point in adding a
void * cast to each and every caller.

Joel Brobecker cc7039d31a Remove use of stdbool.h in GDB sources.
Using type bool from stdbool unfortunately causes problems trying
to build GDB on AiX and Solaris:

    In file included from ../../src/gdb/utils.h:24:0,
                     from ../../src/gdb/defs.h:707,
                     from ../../src/gdb/utils.c:20:
    /[...]/curses.h:96:14: error: two or more data types in declaration
    specifiers
     typedef char bool;
                  ^
    make[2]: *** [utils.o] Error 1

In theory, the problem is in curses.h which, in both cases, do
something similar. On Solaris:

    #if !defined(__cplusplus) && !defined(_BOOL)
    typedef char bool;
    #endif /* !defined(__cplusplus) && !defined(_BOOL) */

On AiX:

    #if !defined(__cplusplus) || (defined(__IBMCPP__) &&(__IBMCPP__<400))
    #ifndef _BOOL
    #define _BOOL
    typedef int bool;
    #endif
    #endif

You can reproduce the same problem by trying to compile:

    % cat toto.c
    #include <stdbool.h>
    #include <curses.h>
    % gcc -c toto.c
    In file included from toto.c:1:0:
    /[...]/curses.h:159:13: error: two or more data types in declaration
    specifiers
     typedef int bool;
             ^

This specific issue wouldn't occur if we included curses.h before
including stdbool.h, and I looked at that just to be complete.
Here is a small schematic representation of the include logic:

  * utils.c:
      -> defs.h -> utils.h -> stdbool.h
      -> gdb_curses.h -> curses.h

Because defs.h should always be first on the list, it means that
stdbool.h will always necessarily be included ahead of curses.h.

But, thinking beyond this very specific issue, it shows that using
stdbool.h is going to cause problems on these systems until either
GCC fixes those includes in a way that makes them work; or we switch
to C++.

In the meantime, I think the path of least resistance is to revert
the use of stdbool.h, and use integers, the way we've done up until
now. The benefits of using type "bool" are modest, IMO, so not
a great loss, and a temporary one.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        * utils.h: Remove <stdbool.h> #include.
        (producer_is_gcc): Change return type to "int".
        * utils.c (producer_is_gcc): Change return type to int.

Yao Qi b597c318b8 always read synthetic pointers as signed integers
I see the error message "access outside bounds of object referenced
via synthetic pointer" in the two fails below of mips gdb testing

print d[-2]^M
access outside bounds of object referenced via synthetic pointer^M

(gdb) print/d p[-1]^M
access outside bounds of object referenced via synthetic pointer^M
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.dwarf2/implptrpiece.exp: print/d p[-1]

in the first test, 'd[-2]' is processed by GDB as '* (&d[-2])'. 'd'
is a synthetic pointer, so its value is zero, the address of 'd[-2]'
is -2.  In dwarf2loc.c:indirect_pieced_value,

  /* This is an offset requested by GDB, such as value subscripts.
     However, due to how synthetic pointers are implemented, this is
     always presented to us as a pointer type. This means we have to
     sign-extend it manually as appropriate. */
  byte_offset = value_as_address (value);
  if (TYPE_LENGTH (value_type (value)) < sizeof (LONGEST))
    byte_offset = gdb_sign_extend (byte_offset,
				   8 * TYPE_LENGTH (value_type (value)));
  byte_offset += piece->v.ptr.offset;

We know that the value is really an offset instead of address, so the
fix is to extract the value as an (signed) offset.

internal_vproblem can be called (via malloc_failure) from almost the
first line of captured_main, but it will crash if called before the
first call to set_width. This commit makes internal_vproblem work
at any time.

There are two parts to this. If called before gdb_stderr is set up,
internal_vproblem will fall back to printing the message on regular
stderr and aborting. If called after gdb_stderr is set up but before
filtered printing is set up, internal_vproblem will operate as usual
except that it can not query whether to quit and/or dump core so it
defaults to doing both.
