Tom Tromey ffc2605c41 Introduce event_location_up
This removes make_cleanup_delete_event_location and instead changes
the various location functions to return an event_location_up, a new
unique_ptr typedef.

This is largely straightforward, but be sure to examine the
init_breakpoint_sal change. I believe the code I deleted there is
dead, because "location != NULL" can never be true in that branch; but
you should double-check.

Pedro Alves 67cb5b2da2 -Wwrite-strings: Constify word break character arrays
-Wwrite-strings flags several cases of missing casts around
initializations like:

   static char *gdb_completer_command_word_break_characters =
    " \t\n!@#$%^&*()+=|~`}{[]\"';:?/>.<,";

Obviously these could/should be const. However, while at it, there's
no need for these variables to be pointers instead of arrays. They
are never changed to point to anything else.

Unfortunately, readline's rl_completer_word_break_characters is
"char *", not "const char *". So we always need a cast somewhere. The
approach taken here is to add a new
set_rl_completer_word_break_characters function that becomes the only
place that writes to rl_completer_word_break_characters, and thus the
single place that needs the cast.

Artemiy Volkov aa0061181a Convert lvalue reference type check to general reference type check
In almost all contexts (except for overload resolution rules and expression
semantics), lvalue and rvalue references are equivalent. That means that in all
but these cases we can replace a TYPE_CODE_REF check to a TYPE_IS_REFERENCE
check and, for switch statements, add a case label for a rvalue reference type
next to a case label for an lvalue reference type. This patch does exactly
that.

The code in question is here

       file_to_match = (char *) xmalloc (colon - text + 1);
       strncpy (file_to_match, text, colon - text + 1);

it is likely that file_to_match is not null-terminated. The patch is
to strncpy 'colon - text' bytes and explicitly set '\0'.

Pedro Alves 8d297bbf60 Type-safe wrapper for enum flags
This patch fixes C++ build errors like this:

/home/pedro/gdb/mygit/cxx-convertion/src/gdb/linux-tdep.c:1126:35: error: invalid conversion from ‘int’ to ‘filterflags’ [-fpermissive]
       | COREFILTER_HUGETLB_PRIVATE);
                                   ^

This is a case of enums used as bit flags. Unlike "regular" enums,
these values are supposed to be or'ed together. However, in C++, the
type of "(ENUM1 | ENUM2)" is int, and you then can't assign an int to
an enum variable without a cast. That means that this:

  enum foo_flags flags = 0;

  if (...)
    flags |= FOO_FLAG1;
  if (...)
    flags |= FOO_FLAG2;

... would have to be written as:

  enum foo_flags flags = (enum foo_flags) 0;

  if (...)
    flags = (enum foo_flags) (flags | FOO_FLAG1);
  if (...)
    flags = (enum foo_flags) (flags | FOO_FLAG2);

which is ... ugly. Alternatively, we'd have to use an int for the
variable's type, which isn't ideal either.

This patch instead adds an "enum flags" class. "enum flags" are
exactly the enums where the values are bits that are meant to be ORed
together.

This allows writing code like the below, while with raw enums this
would fail to compile without casts to enum type at the assignments to
'f':

  enum some_flag
  {
     flag_val1 = 1 << 1,
     flag_val2 = 1 << 2,
     flag_val3 = 1 << 3,
     flag_val4 = 1 << 4,
  };
  DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE(enum some_flag, some_flags)

  some_flags f = flag_val1 | flag_val2;
  f |= flag_val3;

It's also possible to assign literal zero to an enum flags variable
(meaning, no flags), dispensing either adding an awkward explicit "no
value" value to the enumeration or the cast to assignments from 0.
For example:

  some_flags f = 0;
  f |= flag_val3 | flag_val4;

Note that literal integers other than zero do fail to compile:

  some_flags f = 1; // error

C is still supported -- DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE is just a typedef in that
case.

Simon Marchi 9a3c826307 Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for
the mailing list.

This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is
assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires
those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example:

 - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...)
 - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form
   of a void pointer
 - "user data" passed to some function

This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert
casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the
native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.  To my
surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted.

Here's the ChangeLog entry. Again, this was relatively quick to make
despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't
believe it's very useful information in that particular case...

Simon Marchi 224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

Keith Seitz 6799407467 Mass rename `explicit' -> `explicit_loc'.
BuildBot reminded me that "explicit" is a reserved keyword in C++.

Keith Seitz 87f0e72047 Explicit locations: add UI features for CLI
This patch exposes explicit locations to the CLI user. This enables
users to "explicitly" specify attributes of the breakpoint location
to avoid any ambiguity that might otherwise exist with linespecs.

The general syntax of explicit locations is:
-source SOURCE_FILENAME -line {+-}LINE -function FUNCTION_NAME
-label LABEL_NAME

Option names may be abbreviated, e.g., "-s SOURCE_FILENAME -li 3" and users
may use the completer with either options or values.

Patrick Palka 5836a818ec Revert "Sync readline/ to version 7.0 alpha"
This reverts commit b558ff043d.
This reverts commit 4a11f20659.

The initial import commit failed to retain local changes made to
readline's configure.in (and the commit message erroneously stated that
there were no local changes that needed to be reapplied). Also the
import caused a couple of build errors and a scattering of testsuite
regressions throughout many arches. It's probably better to start over
with this import, hopefully more carefully next time.

Patrick Palka 4a11f20659 Sync readline/ to version 7.0 alpha
This patch syncs our upstream copy of readline from version 6.2 to the
latest version, 7.0 alpha (released July 10 2015).

I essentially copied what was done the last time readline was synced,
when Jan updated to readline 6.2 in 2011:
http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2011-05/msg00003.html

Procedure:

1. I extracted the readline-7.0-alpha tarball on top of readline/.
2. I deleted all the new files under doc/ that were deliberately omitted
   before.
3. I regenerated readline/configure and readline/examples/rlfe/configure
   using autoconf 2.64. No other configure files need regenerating.
4. I updated the function gdb_printable_part in completer.c with a
   trivial change made to the readline function it is based off of,
   printable_part in readline/complete.c. There is more work to be done in
   completer.c to sync it with readline/complete.c, but it is non-trivial
   and should probably be done separately anyway.

Local patches that had to be reapplied:

    None. readline 7.0 alpha contains all of our local readline
    patches.

New files in readline/:

    colors.{c,h}
    examples/{hist_erasedups,hist_purgecmd,rl-callbacktest,rlbasic}.c
    parse-colors.{c,h}
    readline.pc.in
    configure.ac

Deleted files in readline/:

    configure.in

Regressions:

After the sync there is one testsuite regression, the test
"signal SIGINT" in gdb.gdb/selftest.exp which now FAILs. Previously,
the readline 6.2 SIGINT handler would temporarily reinstall the
underlying application's SIGINT handler and immediately re-raise SIGINT
so that the orginal handler gets invoked. But now (since readline 6.3)
its SIGINT handler does not re-raise SIGINT or directly invoke the
original handler; it now sets a flag marking that SIGINT was raised, and
waits until readline explicitly has control to call the application's
SIGINT handler. Anyway, because SIGINT is no longer re-raised from
within readline's SIGINT handler, doing "signal SIGINT" with a stopped
inferior gdb process will no longer resume and then immediately stop the
process (since there is no 2nd SIGINT to immediately catch). Instead,
the inferior gdb process will now just print "Quit" and continue to run.
So with this commit, this particular test case is adjusted to reflect
this change in behavior (we now have to send a 2nd SIGINT manually to
stop it).

Aside from this one testsuite regression, I personally noticed no
regression in user-visible behavior. Though I only tested on x86_64
and on i686 Debian Stretch.

Getting this kind of change in at the start of the GDB 7.11 development
cycle will allow us to get a lot of passive testing from developers and
from bleeding-edge users.

readline/ChangeLog.gdb:

	Import readline 7.0 alpha
	* configure: Regenerate.
	* examples/rlfe/configure: Regenerate.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* completer.c (gdb_printable_part): Sync with readline function
	it is based off of.

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

	* gdb.gdb/selftest.exp (test_with_self): Update test to now
	expect the GDB inferior to no longer immediately stop after
	being resumed with "signal SIGINT".

annoying. It makes unclear the fact that the "type" variables gets
overwritten. It has actually bitten me a few times. I think the
following, explicit form, is better.

  type = check_typedef (type);

This patches changes all instances of CHECK_TYPEDEF for an equivalent
call to check_typedef. The bulk of the change was done with this sed:

  sed -i 's/CHECK_TYPEDEF (\([^)]*\));/\1 = check_typedef (\1);/' <file>.c

The ChangeLog was generated using David Malcom's generate_changelog.py.
I manually fixed those places where it gets the wrong function name,
hopefully all of them.

The patch was built-tested, and I ran a few smoke tests.

Andrew Burgess 51f0e40d65 gdb: Rework command completion on 'tui reg'.
We previously specified a few known register groups for the 'tui reg'
command. Other register groups could be accessed, but only by using the
'tui reg next' command and cycling through all the groups.

This commit removes the hard coded sub-commands of 'tui reg' and instead
adds dynamic completion of sub-commands based on the architecturally
defined register groups, giving immediate access to all available
register groups.

There is still the 'next' and 'prev' commands for cycling through the
register groups if that's wanted.

The new code maintains the ability to only enter partial names for
register groups, which is something we got for free when using the
standard sub-command mechanism.

The register (and register group) completer has been changed to use
get_current_arch rather than using the architecture of the currently
selected frame. When the target is running, this is equivalent,
however, when the target is not running, using get_current_arch will
provide results from the default architecture.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* completer.c: Add arch-utils.h include.
	(enum reg_completer_targets): New enum.
	(reg_or_group_completer_1): New function containing old
	reg_or_group_completer, add and use new parameter to control what
	is completed on. Use get_current_arch rather than architecture of
	currently selected frame.
	(reg_or_group_completer): Call new reg_or_group_completer_1.
	(reggroup_completer): Call new reg_or_group_completer_1.
	* completer.h (reggroup_completer): Add declaration.
	* tui/tui-regs.c: Add 'completer.h' include.
	(tui_reg_next_command): Renamed to...
	(tui_reg_next): ...this. Adjust parameters and return rather than
	display new group.
	(tui_reg_prev_command): Renamed to...
	(tui_reg_prev): ...this. Adjust parameters and return rather than
	display new group.
	(tui_reg_float_command): Delete.
	(tui_reg_general_command): Delete.
	(tui_reg_system_command): Delete.
	(tui_reg_command): Rewrite to perform switching of register group.
	Add header comment.
	(tuireglist): Remove.
	(tui_reggroup_completer): New function.
	(_initialize_tui_regs): Remove 'tui reg' sub-commands, update
	creation of 'tui reg' command.
	* NEWS: Add comment about 'tui reg' changes.

gdb/doc/ChangeLog:

	* gdb.texinfo (TUI Commands): Bring all 'tui reg' commands into a
	single table entry.

Pedro Alves 492d29ea1c Split TRY_CATCH into TRY + CATCH
This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from
this:

~~~
  volatile gdb_exception ex;
  TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
    {
    }
  if (ex.reason < 0)
    {
    }
~~~

to this:

~~~
  TRY
    {
    }
  CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
    {
    }
  END_CATCH
~~~

Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and
declaring the caught exception in the catch block.

This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when
building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode
(using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step.

TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY
and the CATCH blocks, like:

  TRY
    {
    }

  // some code here.

  CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
    {
    }
  END_CATCH

Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch.

By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block
scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile
exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more
directly to C++'s catch blocks.

The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was
done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual
editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places
needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were
using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases
where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH
after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB
still builds at each incremental step.

END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons:

First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which
requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere.
Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for
block, like:

  #define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \
    for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \
         exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \
	 EXCEPTION = exception_none)

would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90,
which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code.

Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as
long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH
block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every
frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will
be done in END_CATCH.

After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until
cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will
save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH
catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so
that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist.

IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a
newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering
C++.

Gary Benson ef0b411a11 Add max-completions parameter, and implement tab-completion limiting.
This commit adds a new exception, MAX_COMPLETIONS_REACHED_ERROR, to be
thrown whenever the completer has generated too many candidates to
be useful. A new user-settable variable, "max_completions", is added
to control this behaviour. A top-level completion limit is added to
complete_line_internal, as the final check to ensure the user never

Sergio Durigan Junior 7d793aa9f0 PR python/16699: GDB Python command completion with overriden complete vs. completer class
This PR came from a Red Hat bug that was filed recently. I checked and
it still exists on HEAD, so here's a proposed fix. Although this is
marked as a Python backend bug, this is really about the completion
mechanism used by GDB. Since this code reminds me of my first attempt
to make a good noodle, it took me quite some time to fix it in a
non-intrusive way.

The problem is triggered when one registers a completion method inside a
class in a Python script, rather than registering the command using a
completer class directly. For example, consider the following script:

    class MyFirstCommand(gdb.Command):
          def __init__(self):
              gdb.Command.__init__(self,'myfirstcommand',gdb.COMMAND_USER,gdb.COMPLETE_FILENAME)

              def invoke(self,argument,from_tty):
                  raise gdb.GdbError('not implemented')

    class MySecondCommand(gdb.Command):
          def __init__(self):
              gdb.Command.__init__(self,'mysecondcommand',gdb.COMMAND_USER)

              def invoke(self,argument,from_tty):
                  raise gdb.GdbError('not implemented')

                  def complete(self,text,word):
                      return gdb.COMPLETE_FILENAME

    MyFirstCommand ()
    MySecondCommand ()

When one loads this into GDB and tries to complete filenames for both
myfirstcommand and mysecondcommand, she gets:

    (gdb) myfirstcommand /hom<TAB>
    (gdb) myfirstcommand /home/
                               ^
    ...
    (gdb) mysecondcommand /hom<TAB>
    (gdb) mysecondcommand /home
                                ^

(The "^" marks the final position of the cursor after the TAB).

So we see that myfirstcommand honors the COMPLETE_FILENAME class (as
specified in the command creation), but mysecondcommand does not. After
some investigation, I found that the problem lies with the set of word
break characters that is used for each case. The set should be the same
for both commands, but it is not.

During the process of deciding which type of completion should be used,
the code in gdb/completer.c:complete_line_internal analyses the command
that requested the completion and tries to determine the type of
completion wanted by checking which completion function will be called
(e.g., filename_completer for filenames, location_completer for
locations, etc.).

This all works fine for myfirstcommand, because immediately after the
command registration the Python backend already sets its completion
function to filename_completer (which then causes the
complete_line_internal function to choose the right set of word break
chars). However, for mysecondcommand, this decision is postponed to
when the completer function is evaluated, and the Python backend uses an
internal completer (called cmdpy_completer).  complete_line_internal
doesn't know about this internal completer, and can't choose the right
set of word break chars in time, which then leads to a bad decision when
completing the "/hom" word.

So, after a few attempts, I decided to create another callback in
"struct cmd_list_element" that will be responsible for handling the case
when there is an unknown completer function for complete_line_internal
to work with. So far, only the Python backend uses this callback, and
only when the user provides a completer method instead of registering
the command directly with a completer class. I think this is the best
option because it not very intrusive (all the other commands will still
work normally), but especially because the whole completion code is so
messy that it would be hard to fix this without having to redesign
things.

I have regtested this on Fedora 18 x86_64, without regressions. I also
included a testcase.

Pedro Alves 6f937416b9 Constify strings in tracepoint.c, lookup_cmd and the completers.
This is sort of a continuation of Keith's parse_exp_1 constification
patch. It started out by undoing these bits:

  @@ -754,9 +754,12 @@ validate_actionline (char **line, struct
   	  tmp_p = p;
   	  for (loc = t->base.loc; loc; loc = loc->next)
   	    {

  -	      exp = parse_exp_1 (&p, loc->address,
  +	      const char *q;

  +	      q = tmp_p;
  +	      exp = parse_exp_1 (&q, loc->address,
   				 block_for_pc (loc->address), 1);
  +	      p = (char *) q;

and progressively making more things const upwards, fixing fallout,
rinse repeat, until GDB built again (--enable-targets=all).

That ended up constifying lookup_cmd/add_cmd and (lots of) friends,
and the completers.

I didn't try to constify the command hooks themselves, because I know
upfront there are commands that write to the command string argument,
and I think I managed to stop at a nice non-hacky split point already.

I think the only non-really-super-obvious changes are
tracepoint.c:validate_actionline, and tracepoint.c:trace_dump_actions.

The rest is just mostly about 'char *' => 'const char *', 'char **'=>
'const char **', and the occasional (e.g., deprecated_cmd_warning)
case of 'char **'=> 'const char *', where/when I noticed that nothing
actually cares about the pointer to pointer output.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17, native and gdbserver.

Joel Brobecker 28e7fd6234 Update years in copyright notice for the GDB files.
Two modifications:
  1. The addition of 2013 to the copyright year range for every file;
  2. The use of a single year range, instead of potentially multiple
     year ranges, as approved by the FSF.

Mike Frysinger ace2195744 gdb: include help aliases in help command completion
There are a bunch of aliases that get used with help, but the current
command completion logic does not include those when doing completions.

Since the framework is already mostly in place, extend complete_on_cmdlist
slightly to pass down the ignore_help_classes flag like is done with the
existing lookup command logic.

Now you can do:
	(gdb) help use<tab>
and get back:
	(gdb) help user-defined

Mike Frysinger de0bea007c gdb: add completion handler for "handle" and "signal"
The command line completion has spoiled me. Thus the lack of completion with
the "handle" command annoys me. Patch!

This does a few things:
 - adds a VEC_merge helper
 - adds a generic signal completer
 - adds a completion handler for the "handle" command
 - sets the completion handler for the "signal" command
