The deprecation of the SA_xxx interrupt flags did not emit deprecated
warnings. Andrew said about the removal of the deprecated flag defines:

Define the deprecated flags as a call to a __deprecated inline function
so a warning is emitted on compile time.
Extend the reprieve of out of tree drivers to 9/2007.

Now that we have the much better esp_scsi driver and low level drivers
are easy to port over deprecate the old NCR53C9x driver.
I've Cc'ed the m68k and mips lists because all but one bus glues are
for these platforms. Chances stand bad for the remaining driver,
mca_53c9x which hasn't gotten any non-trivial update since it was
merge in late 2.1.x and whos maintainers mail address bounces.

These helper functions are a leftover from 2.4 sync I/O and are a
notorious source for bugs. They lead to device driver specific code
creeping into cio, and some issues can't really be fixed at all.
Device drivers can easily implement those functions themselves in a
more robust manner, so let's get rid of them.

Kill i2c_adapter.class_dev. Instead, set the class of i2c_adapter.dev
to i2c_adapter_class, so that a symlink will be created for every
i2c_adapter in /sys/class/i2c-adapter.
The same change must be mirrored to i2c-isa as it duplicates some
of the i2c-core functionalities.
User-space tools and libraries might need some adjustments. In
particular, libsensors from lm_sensors 2.10.3 or later is required for
proper discovery of i2c adapter names after this change.

Those two experimental APIs never worked fine nor, afaik, were

Nobody ported ffmpeg from dv1394 to rawiso yet, and there is no
justification to remove dv1394 right now.
Nevertheless, a strong deprecation of this ABI makes a lot of sense,
especially as Kristian H's drivers shape up to be an attractive
alternative to the existing ones. But we don't have a schedule at the
moment.

Since wext is being replaced as fast as we can (it'll probably stick around
for legacy drivers though) and the wext/netlink stuff was never really
used, this schedules it for removal.
The removal schedule is tight but there are no users of the code, the main
user of the wext user interface are the wireless-tools, they only have an
alpha version using the netlink interface and even that is incomplete.

Compaq touchscreen emulation (drivers/input/tsdev.c) is old,
was obsolete when it was written by the authors own admission
and much better userspace solutions like tslib now exist.
The name is also confusing.

Add a kconfig option CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS to make procfs interface
a configurable attribute of ACPI.
No procfs interface is actually deprecated,
and no sysfs interface is added in this patch.
CONGI_ACPI_PROCFS is used to mark procfs interface as deprecated
once the same function is duplicated in sysfs.

Flag i2c_adapter.dev for removal after userspace tools get upgraded, and
include a near-term code migration aid to facilitate this:
- The class device gets the name attribute it should have had. This
was previously (wrongly) associated with the i2c_adapter.dev node.
Sysfs based tools and libraries can start converting right away.
- Issue a warning for legacy adapter drivers that don't provide any
physical device node; so systems with those drivers will know to
fix this problem earlier.
This is one of a series of patches to help the I2C stack become a better
citizen of the Linux Driver Model world.

This interface was useless as the LPC ISA-like interface is always
available, is faster, and is more reliable. This cuts the driver
size by some 20%.
This change is also required to later convert the it87 driver to a
platform driver, so that we can get rid of i2c-isa in a near future.

There is no manpower available to reform oui.db into a library for use
in more kernel subsystems. The low ratio of usefulness to size and the
occasional need to update oui.db from IEEE's official list suggest to
drop oui.db. I plan to make a userspace script available which
translates the remaining numeric sysfs attributes to names of
organizations.

We really can't remove ip_queue. Many users use this, there is no binary
compatible interface and even the compat replacement for the originally
statically linked library doesn't work. There is also no real necessity
to remove the code, so the feature-removal-schedule entry should be
removed instead.

The basic issue is that despite have been deprecated and warned about as a
very bad thing in the man pages since its inception there are a few real
users of sys_sysctl. It was my assumption that because sysctl had been
deprecated for all of 2.6 there would be no user space users by this point,
so I initially gave sys_sysctl a very short deprecation period.
Now that I know there are a few real users the only sane way to proceed
with deprecation is to push the time limit out to a year or two work and
work with distributions that have big testing pools like fedora core to
find these last remaining users.
Which means that the sys_sysctl interface needs to be maintained in the
meantime.
Since I have provided a technical measure that allows us to add new sysctl
entries without reserving more binary numbers I believe that is enough to
fix the sys_sysctl binary interface maintenance problems, because there is
no longer a need to change the binary interface at all.
Since the sys_sysctl implementation needs to stay around for a while and
the worst of the maintenance issues that caused us to occasionally break
the ABI have been addressed I don't see any advantage in continuing with
the removal of sys_sysctl.
So instead of merely increasing the deprecation period this patch removes
the deprecation of sys_sysctl and modifies the kernel to compile the code
in by default.
With committing to maintain sys_sysctl we get all of the advantages of a
fast interface for anything that needs it. Currently sys_sysctl is about
5x faster than /proc/sys, for the same string data.

Mark ACPI hooks in speedstep-centrino as deprecated. Change the order in which
speedstep-centrino and acpi-cpufreq (when both are in kernel) will be
added. First driver to be tried is now acpi-cpufreq, followed by
speedstep-centrino.
Add a note in feature-removal-schedule to mark this deprecation.

i2c-isa doesn't make much sense in the device driver model. Drivers
relying on it are better implemented as platform drivers. We must
wait for recent versions of libsensors (2.10.0 or later) to be widely
deployed beforehand, though. This move should also make it easier to
convert i2c-core to the device driver model.

deprecate PHYSDEV* values in the uevent environment
These values are no longer needed and inconsistent with the
stacking of class devices. The event environment should not
carry properties of a parent device. The key PHYSDEVDRIVER is
available as DRIVER, PHYDEVBUS is indentical SUBSYSTEM. Class
devices should not carry any of these values.

The code for frame diverter is unmaintained and has bitrotted.
The number of users is very small and the code has lots of problems.
If anyone is using it, they maybe exposing themselves to bad packet attacks.

The recent interrupt rework introduced bit value conflicts with sparc.
Instead of introducing new architecture flags mess, move the interrupt SA_
flags out of the signal namespace and replace them by interrupt related flags.
This allows to remove the obsolete SA_INTERRUPT flag and clean up the bit
field values.
This patch:
Move the interrupt related SA_ flags out of linux/signal.h and rename them to
IRQF_ . This moves the interrupt related flags out of the signal namespace
and allows to remove the architecture dependencies.
SA_INTERRUPT is not needed by userspace and glibc so it can be removed safely.
The existing SA_ constants are kept for easy transition and will be
removed after a 6 month grace period.

Temporarily add EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL and EXPORT_UNUSED_SYMBOL_GPL. These
will be used as a transition measure for symbols that aren't used in the
kernel and are on the way out. When a module uses such a symbol, a warning
is printk'd at modprobe time.
The main reason for removing unused exports is size: eacho export takes
roughly between 100 and 150 bytes of kernel space in the binary. This
patch gives users the option to immediately get this size gain via a config
option.

Remove synchronize_kernel() (deprecated 2-APR-2005 in
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/4/3/11) and makes the RCU API inaccessible to
non-GPL Linux kernel modules (as was announced more than one year ago in
http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/4/3/8). Tested on x86 and ppc64.

Grand unification of the three types of workarounds we have so far.
The "skip mode page 8" workaround is now limited to devices which
pretend to be of TYPE_DISK instead of TYPE_RBC. This workaround is no
longer enabled for Initio bridges.
Patch update in anticipation of more workarounds:
- Add module parameter "workarounds".
- Deprecate parameter "force_inquiry_hack".
- Compose the blacklist of a compound type for better readability and
extensibility.
- Remove a now unused #define.

Update the schedule for the removal of drivers depending on
OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER as follows:
- adjust OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER dependencie
- from the release of 2.6.16 till the release of 2.6.17:
approx. two months for users to report problems with the ALSA
drivers for the same hardware
- after the release of 2.6.17 (and before 2.6.18):
remove the subset of drivers marked at OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER without
known regressions in the ALSA drivers for the same hardware
Additionally, correct some OBSOLETE_OSS_DRIVER dependencies.

find_trylock_page() is an odd interface in that it doesn't take a reference
like the others. Now that XFS no longer uses it, and its last remaining
caller actually wants an elevated refcount, opencode that callsite and
schedule find_trylock_page() for removal.

According to the specification the timevals must be validated and an
errorcode -EINVAL returned in case the timevals are not in canonical form.
This check was never done in Linux.
The pre 2.6.16 code converted invalid timevals silently. Negative timeouts
were converted by the timeval_to_jiffies conversion to the maximum timeout.
hrtimers and the ktime_t operations expect timevals in canonical form.
Otherwise random results might happen on 32 bits machines due to the
optimized ktime_add/sub operations. Negative timeouts are treated as
already expired. This might break applications which work on pre 2.6.16.
To prevent random behaviour and API breakage the timevals are checked and
invalid timevals sanitized in a simliar way as the pre 2.6.16 code did.
Invalid timevals are reported with a per boot limited number of kernel
messages so applications which use this misfeature can be corrected.
After a grace period of one year the sanitizing should be replaced by a
correct validation check. This is also documented in
Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt
The validation and sanitizing is done inside do_setitimer so all callers
(sys_setitimer, compat_sys_setitimer, osf_setitimer) are catched.

This change reverts the 033b96fd30 commit
from Kay Sievers that removed the mount/umount uevents from the kernel.
Some older versions of HAL still depend on these events to detect when a
new device has been mounted. These events are not correctly emitted,
and are broken by design, and so, should not be relied upon by any
future program. Instead, the /proc/mounts file should be polled to
properly detect this kind of event.
A feature-removal-schedule.txt entry has been added, noting when this
interface will be removed from the kernel.

Only scan I2C address 0x2d. This is the default address and no IT87xxF
chip was ever seen on I2C at a different address. These chips are
better accessed through their ISA interface anyway.
This fixes bug #5889, although it doesn't address the whole class
of problems. We'd need the ability to blacklist arbitrary I2C addresses
on systems known to contain I2C devices which behave badly when probed.
Plan the I2C interface for removal as well. If nobody complains within
a year, it will confirm my impression that the I2C interface isn't
actually needed by anyone.

If optimizing for size (CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE), allow gcc4 compilers
to decide what to inline and what not - instead of the kernel forcing gcc
to inline all the time. This requires several places that require to be
inlined to be marked as such, previous patches in this series do that.

The 8250 serial driver now has the ability to deal with the differences
between the standard 8250 family of UARTs and their slightly strange
brother on Alchemy SOCs. The loss of features is not considered an
issue.

->permission and ->lookup have a struct nameidata * argument these days to
pass down lookup intents. Unfortunately some callers of lookup_hash don't
actually pass this one down. For lookup_one_len() we don't have a struct
nameidata to pass down, but as this function is a library function only
used by filesystem code this is an acceptable limitation. All other
callers should pass down the nameidata, so this patch changes the
lookup_hash interface to only take a struct nameidata argument and derives
the other two arguments to __lookup_hash from it. All callers already have
the nameidata argument available so this is not a problem.
At the same time I'd like to deprecate the lookup_hash interface as there
are better exported interfaces for filesystem usage. Before it can
actually be removed I need to fix up rpc_pipefs.

I think it's about time to make the build a little more vocal about the
expiry of these functions. Due to recent discussions with problems in
the console initialisation vs power manglement, I'd like to move the
date forward to September.

Schedule removal of the PCMCIA ioctl (and thus kernel support for the
pcmcia-cs userspace package) for November 2005.
A big "thank you" to Dave Hinds for his great work on supporting PCMCIA in
Linux. Things are just done differently by now, so the ongoing work to make
PCMCIA behave like any other hotpluggable bus should continue.

This small patch changes two drivers, adm1025 and adm1026, to
report vid as cpu0_vid sysfs name as used by the other drivers.
Added duplicated names and six month warning for old names to
be removed as requested. Compile tested.

The gpl exports need to be put back. Moving them to GPL -- but in a
measured manner, as I proposed on this list some months ago -- is fine.
Changing these particular exports precipitously is most definitely -not-
fine. Here is my earlier proposal:

See below for a patch that puts the exports back, along with an updated
version of my earlier patch that starts the process of moving them to GPL.
I will also be following this message with RFC patches that introduce two
(EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL) interfaces to replace synchronize_kernel(), which then
becomes deprecated.

These have been deprecated since ->compat_ioctl when in, thus only a short
deprecation period. There's four users left: i2o_config, s390/z90crypy,
s390/dasd and s390/zfcp and for the first two patches are about to be
submitted to get rid of it.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
