Dave Chinner 273203699f xfs: xfs_remove deadlocks due to inverted AGF vs AGI lock ordering
Removing an inode from the namespace involves removing the directory
entry and dropping the link count on the inode. Removing the
directory entry can result in locking an AGF (directory blocks were
freed) and removing a link count can result in placing the inode on
an unlinked list which results in locking an AGI.

The big problem here is that we have an ordering constraint on AGF
and AGI locking - inode allocation locks the AGI, then can allocate
a new extent for new inodes, locking the AGF after the AGI.
Similarly, freeing the inode removes the inode from the unlinked
list, requiring that we lock the AGI first, and then freeing the
inode can result in an inode chunk being freed and hence freeing
disk space requiring that we lock an AGF.

Hence the ordering that is imposed by other parts of the code is AGI
before AGF. This means we cannot remove the directory entry before
we drop the inode reference count and put it on the unlinked list as
this results in a lock order of AGF then AGI, and this can deadlock
against inode allocation and freeing. Therefore we must drop the
link counts before we remove the directory entry.

This is still safe from a transactional point of view - it is not
until we get to xfs_bmap_finish() that we have the possibility of
multiple transactions in this operation. Hence as long as we remove
the directory entry and drop the link count in the first transaction
of the remove operation, there are no transactional constraints on
the ordering here.

Change the ordering of the operations in the xfs_remove() function
to align the ordering of AGI and AGF locking to match that of the
rest of the code.

Dave Chinner a4fbe6ab1e xfs: decouple inode and bmap btree header files
Currently the xfs_inode.h header has a dependency on the definition
of the BMAP btree records as the inode fork includes an array of
xfs_bmbt_rec_host_t objects in it's definition.

Move all the btree format definitions from xfs_btree.h,
xfs_bmap_btree.h, xfs_alloc_btree.h and xfs_ialloc_btree.h to
xfs_format.h to continue the process of centralising the on-disk
format definitions. With this done, the xfs inode definitions are no
longer dependent on btree header files.

The enables a massive culling of unnecessary includes, with close to
200 #include directives removed from the XFS kernel code base.

Dave Chinner 239880ef64 xfs: decouple log and transaction headers
xfs_trans.h has a dependency on xfs_log.h for a couple of
structures. Most code that does transactions doesn't need to know
anything about the log, but this dependency means that they have to
include xfs_log.h. Decouple the xfs_trans.h and xfs_log.h header
files and clean up the includes to be in dependency order.

In doing this, remove the direct include of xfs_trans_reserve.h from
xfs_trans.h so that we remove the dependency between xfs_trans.h and
xfs_mount.h. Hence the xfs_trans.h include can be moved to the
indicate the actual dependencies other header files have on it.

Note that these are kernel only header files, so this does not
translate to any userspace changes at all.

Dave Chinner 5706278758 xfs: unify directory/attribute format definitions
The on-disk format definitions for the directory and attribute
structures are spread across 3 header files right now, only one of
which is dedicated to defining on-disk structures and their
manipulation (xfs_dir2_format.h). Pull all the format definitions
into a single header file - xfs_da_format.h - and switch all the
code over to point at that.

Dave Chinner 70a9883c5f xfs: create a shared header file for format-related information
All of the buffer operations structures are needed to be exported
for xfs_db, so move them all to a common location rather than
spreading them all over the place. They are verifying the on-disk
format, so while xfs_format.h might be a good place, it is not part
of the on disk format.

Hence we need to create a new header file that we centralise these
related definitions. Start by moving the bffer operations
structures, and then also move all the other definitions that have
crept into xfs_log_format.h and xfs_format.h as there was no other
shared header file to put them in.

Jie Liu 3d3c8b5222 xfs: refactor xfs_trans_reserve() interface
With the new xfs_trans_res structure has been introduced, the log
reservation size, log count as well as log flags are pre-initialized
at mount time.  So it's time to refine xfs_trans_reserve() interface
to be more neat.

Also, introduce a new helper M_RES() to return a pointer to the
mp->m_resv structure to simplify the input.

Dave Chinner c24b5dfadc xfs: kill xfs_vnodeops.[ch]
Now we have xfs_inode.c for holding kernel-only XFS inode
operations, move all the inode operations from xfs_vnodeops.c to
this new file as it holds another set of kernel-only inode
operations. The name of this file traces back to the days of Irix
and it's vnodes which we don't have anymore.

Essentially this move consolidates the inode locking functions
and a bunch of XFS inode operations into the one file. Eventually
the high level functions will be merged into the VFS interface
functions in xfs_iops.c.

This leaves only internal preallocation, EOF block manipulation and
hole punching functions in vnodeops.c. Move these to xfs_bmap_util.c
where we are already consolidating various in-kernel physical extent
manipulation and querying functions.

Dave Chinner 6898811459 xfs: create xfs_bmap_util.[ch]
There is a bunch of code in xfs_bmap.c that is kernel specific and
not shared with userspace. To minimise the difference between the
kernel and userspace code, shift this unshared code to
xfs_bmap_util.c, and the declarations to xfs_bmap_util.h.

The biggest issue here is xfs_bmap_finish() - userspace has it's own
definition of this function, and so we need to move it out of
xfs_bmap.[ch]. This means several other files need to include
xfs_bmap_util.h as well.

It also introduces and interesting dance for the stack switching
code in xfs_bmapi_allocate(). The stack switching/workqueue code is
actually moved to xfs_bmap_util.c, so that userspace can simply use
a #define in a header file to connect the dots without needing to
know about the stack switch code at all.

Dave Chinner 5c4d97d01a xfs: move inode fork definitions to a new header file
The inode fork definitions are a combination of on-disk format
definition and in-memory tracking and manipulation. They are both
shared with userspace, so move them all into their own file so
sharing is easy to do and track.  This removes all inode fork
related information from xfs_inode.h.

Do the same for the all the C code that currently resides in
xfs_inode.c for the same reason.

Dave Chinner e60896d8f2 xfs: di_flushiter considered harmful
When we made all inode updates transactional, we no longer needed
the log recovery detection for inodes being newer on disk than the
transaction being replayed - it was redundant as replay of the log
would always result in the latest version of the inode would be on
disk. It was redundant, but left in place because it wasn't
considered to be a problem.

However, with the new "don't read inodes on create" optimisation,
flushiter has come back to bite us. Essentially, the optimisation
made always initialises flushiter to zero in the create transaction,
and so if we then crash and run recovery and the inode already on
disk has a non-zero flushiter it will skip recovery of that inode.
As a result, log recovery does the wrong thing and we end up with a
corrupt filesystem.

Because we have to support old kernel to new kernel upgrades, we
can't just get rid of the flushiter support in log recovery as we
might be upgrading from a kernel that doesn't have fully transactional
inode updates.  Unfortunately, for v4 superblocks there is no way to
guarantee that log recovery knows about this fact.

We cannot add a new inode format flag to say it's a "special inode
create" because it won't be understood by older kernels and so
recovery could do the wrong thing on downgrade. We cannot specially
detect the combination of zero mode/non-zero flushiter on disk to
non-zero mode, zero flushiter in the log item during recovery
because wrapping of the flushiter can result in false detection.

Hence that makes this "don't use flushiter" optimisation limited to
a disk format that guarantees that we don't need it. And that means
the only fix here is to limit the "no read IO on create"
optimisation to version 5 superblocks....

Eric Sandeen a69c7c0772 xfs: use XFS_BMAP_BMDR_SPACE vs. XFS_BROOT_SIZE_ADJ
XFS_BROOT_SIZE_ADJ is an undocumented macro which accounts for
the difference in size between the on-disk and in-core btree
root.  It's much clearer to just use the newly-added
XFS_BMAP_BMDR_SPACE macro which gives us the on-disk size
directly.

In one case, we must test that the if_broot exists before
applying the macro, however.

Dave Chinner 1baaed8fa9 xfs: xfs_ifree doesn't need to modify the inode buffer
Long ago, bulkstat used to read inodes directly from the backing
buffer for speed. This had the unfortunate problem of being cache
incoherent with unlinks, and so xfs_ifree() had to mark the inode
as free directly in the backing buffer. bulkstat was changed some
time ago to use inode cache coherent lookups, and so will never see
unlinked inodes in it's lookups. Hence xfs_ifree() does not need to
touch the inode backing buffer anymore.

Dave Chinner cca9f93a52 xfs: don't do IO when creating an new inode
When we are allocating a new inode, we read the inode cluster off
disk to increment the generation number. We are already using a
random generation number for newly allocated inodes, so if we are not
using the ikeep mode, we can just generate a new generation number
when we initialise the newly allocated inode.

This avoids the need for reading the inode buffer during inode
creation. This will speed up allocation of inodes in cold, partially
allocated clusters as they will no longer need to be read from disk
during allocation. It will also reduce the CPU overhead of inode
allocation by not having the process the buffer read, even on cache
hits.

Dave Chinner 0a32c26e72 xfs: inode unlinked list needs to recalculate the inode CRC
The inode unlinked list manipulations operate directly on the inode
buffer, and so bypass the inode CRC calculation mechanisms. Hence an
inode on the unlinked list has an invalid CRC. Fix this by
recalculating the CRC whenever we modify an unlinked list pointer in
an inode, ncluding during log recovery. This is trivial to do and
results in  unlinked list operations always leaving a consistent
inode in the buffer.

Dave Chinner 742ae1e35b xfs: introduce CONFIG_XFS_WARN
Running a CONFIG_XFS_DEBUG kernel in production environments is not
the best idea as it introduces significant overhead, can change
the behaviour of algorithms (such as allocation) to improve test
coverage, and (most importantly) panic the machine on non-fatal
errors.

There are many cases where all we want to do is run a
kernel with more bounds checking enabled, such as is provided by the
ASSERT() statements throughout the code, but without all the
potential overhead and drawbacks.

This patch converts all the ASSERT statements to evaluate as
WARN_ON(1) statements and hence if they fail dump a warning and a
stack trace to the log. This has minimal overhead and does not
change any algorithms, and will allow us to find strange "out of
bounds" problems more easily on production machines.

There are a few places where assert statements contain debug only
code. These are converted to be debug-or-warn only code so that we
still get all the assert checks in the code.

Christoph Hellwig 93848a999c xfs: add version 3 inode format with CRCs
Add a new inode version with a larger core.  The primary objective is
to allow for a crc of the inode, and location information (uuid and ino)
to verify it was written in the right place.  We also extend it by:

	a creation time (for Samba);
	a changecount (for NFSv4);
	a flush sequence (in LSN format for recovery);
	an additional inode flags field; and
	some additional padding.

These additional fields are not implemented yet, but already laid
out in the structure.

modification that made it to disk for each buffer.

Dave Chinner 1813dd6405 xfs: convert buffer verifiers to an ops structure.
To separate the verifiers from iodone functions and associate read
and write verifiers at the same time, introduce a buffer verifier
operations structure to the xfs_buf.

This avoids the need for assigning the write verifier, clearing the
iodone function and re-running ioend processing in the read
verifier, and gets rid of the nasty "b_pre_io" name for the write
verifier function pointer. If we ever need to, it will also be
easier to add further content specific callbacks to a buffer with an
ops structure in place.

We also avoid needing to export verifier functions, instead we
can simply export the ops structures for those that are needed
outside the function they are defined in.

This patch also fixes a directory block readahead verifier issue
it exposed.

This patch also adds ops callbacks to the inode/alloc btree blocks
initialised by growfs. These will need more work before they will
work with CRCs.

but do not require ioend processing. Hence factor the read verifier
functions and add a new write verifier wrapper that is used as the
callback.

This is done as one large patch for all verifiers rather than one
patch per verifier as the change is largely mechanical. This
includes hooking up the write verifier via the read verifier
function.

Hooking up the write verifier for buffers obtained via
xfs_trans_get_buf() will be done in a separate patch as that touches
code in many different places rather than just the verifier
functions.

Dave Chinner c3f8fc73ac xfs: make buffer read verication an IO completion function
Add a verifier function callback capability to the buffer read
interfaces.  This will be used by the callers to supply a function
that verifies the contents of the buffer when it is read from disk.
This patch does not provide callback functions, but simply modifies
the interfaces to allow them to be called.

The reason for adding this to the read interfaces is that it is very
difficult to tell fom the outside is a buffer was just read from
disk or whether we just pulled it out of cache. Supplying a callbck
allows the buffer cache to use it's internal knowledge of the buffer
to execute it only when the buffer is read from disk.

It is intended that the verifier functions will mark the buffer with
an EFSCORRUPTED error when verification fails. This allows the
reading context to distinguish a verification error from an IO
error, and potentially take further actions on the buffer (e.g.
attempt repair) based on the error reported.

Brian Foster 72b53efa4a xfs: create helper to check whether to free eofblocks on inode
This check is used in multiple places to determine whether we
should check for (and potentially free) post EOF blocks on an
inode. Add a helper to consolidate the check.

Note that when we remove an inode from the cache (xfs_inactive()),
we are required to trim post-EOF blocks even if the inode is marked
preallocated or append-only to maintain correct space accounting.
The 'force' parameter to xfs_can_free_eofblocks() specifies whether
we should ignore the prealloc/append-only status of the inode.

I found some out of date comments while studying the inode allocation

It basically rewrites the comment regarding to "call_again" variable,

not.

Also did some small changes in another comment that I thought to be

The inode cache functions remaining in xfs_iget.c can be moved to xfs_icache.c
along with the other inode cache functions. This removes all functionality from
xfs_iget.c, so the file can simply be removed.

This move results in various functions now only having the scope of a single
file (e.g. xfs_inode_free()), so clean up all the definitions and exported
prototypes in xfs_icache.[ch] and xfs_inode.h appropriately.

xfs_ilock() and friends really aren't related to the inode cache in
any way, so move them to xfs_inode.c with all the other inode
related functionality.

While doing this move, move the xfs_ilock() tracepoints to *before*
the lock is taken so that when a hang on a lock occurs we have
events to indicate which process and what inode we were trying to
lock when the hang occurred. This is much better than the current
silence we get on a hang...

An inode that enters xfs_inactive has been removed from all global
lists but the inode hash, and can't be recycled in xfs_iget before
it has been marked reclaimable.  Thus taking the iolock in here
is not nessecary at all, and given the amount of lockdep false
positives it has triggered already I'd rather remove the locking.

The only change outside of xfs_inactive is relaxing an assert in
xfs_itruncate_extents.

Christoph Hellwig 43ff2122e6 xfs: on-stack delayed write buffer lists
Queue delwri buffers on a local on-stack list instead of a per-buftarg one,
and write back the buffers per-process instead of by waking up xfsbufd.

This is now easily doable given that we have very few places left that write
delwri buffers:

 - log recovery:
	Only done at mount time, and already forcing out the buffers
	synchronously using xfs_flush_buftarg

 - quotacheck:
	Same story.

 - dquot reclaim:
	Writes out dirty dquots on the LRU under memory pressure.  We might
	want to look into doing more of this via xfsaild, but it's already
	more optimal than the synchronous inode reclaim that writes each
	buffer synchronously.

 - xfsaild:
	This is the main beneficiary of the change.  By keeping a local list
	of buffers to write we reduce latency of writing out buffers, and
	more importably we can remove all the delwri list promotions which
	were hitting the buffer cache hard under sustained metadata loads.

The implementation is very straight forward - xfs_buf_delwri_queue now gets
a new list_head pointer that it adds the delwri buffers to, and all callers
need to eventually submit the list using xfs_buf_delwi_submit or
xfs_buf_delwi_submit_nowait.  Buffers that already are on a delwri list are
skipped in xfs_buf_delwri_queue, assuming they already are on another delwri
list.  The biggest change to pass down the buffer list was done to the AIL
pushing. Now that we operate on buffers the trylock, push and pushbuf log
item methods are merged into a single push routine, which tries to lock the
item, and if possible add the buffer that needs writeback to the buffer list.
This leads to much simpler code than the previous split but requires the
individual IOP_PUSH instances to unlock and reacquire the AIL around calls
to blocking routines.

Given that xfsailds now also handle writing out buffers, the conditions for
log forcing and the sleep times needed some small changes.  The most
important one is that we consider an AIL busy as long we still have buffers
to push, and the other one is that we do increment the pushed LSN for
buffers that are under flushing at this moment, but still count them towards
the stuck items for restart purposes.  Without this we could hammer on stuck
items without ever forcing the log and not make progress under heavy random
delete workloads on fast flash storage devices.

Christoph Hellwig 32ce90a4b7 xfs: remove log item from AIL in xfs_iflush after a shutdown
If a filesystem has been forced shutdown we are never going to write inodes
to disk, which means the inode items will stay in the AIL until we free
the inode. Currently that is not a problem, but a pending change requires us
to empty the AIL before shutting down the filesystem. In that case leaving
the inode in the AIL is lethal. Make sure to remove the log item from the AIL
to allow emptying the AIL on shutdown filesystems.

Timestamps on regular files are the last metadata that XFS does not update
transactionally.  Now that we use the delaylog mode exclusively and made
the log scode scale extremly well there is no need to bypass that code for
timestamp updates.  Logging all updates allows to drop a lot of code, and
will allow for further performance improvements later on.

Note that this patch drops optimized handling of fdatasync - it will be
added back in a separate commit.

Christoph Hellwig ce7ae151dd xfs: remove the i_size field in struct xfs_inode
There is no fundamental need to keep an in-memory inode size copy in the XFS
inode.  We already have the on-disk value in the dinode, and the separate
in-memory copy that we need for regular files only in the XFS inode.

Remove the xfs_inode i_size field and change the XFS_ISIZE macro to use the
VFS inode i_size field for regular files.  Switch code that was directly
accessing the i_size field in the xfs_inode to XFS_ISIZE, or in cases where
we are limited to regular files direct access of the VFS inode i_size field.

This also allows dropping some fairly complicated code in the write path
which dealt with keeping the xfs_inode i_size uptodate with the VFS i_size
that is getting updated inside ->write_end.

Note that we do not bother resetting the VFS i_size when truncating a file
that gets freed to zero as there is no point in doing so because the VFS inode
is no longer in use at this point.  Just relax the assert in xfs_ifree to
only check the on-disk size instead.

Christoph Hellwig 474fce0675 xfs: replace i_flock with a sleeping bitlock
We almost never block on i_flock, the exception is synchronous inode
flushing.  Instead of bloating the inode with a 16/24-byte completion
that we abuse as a semaphore just implement it as a bitlock that uses
a bit waitqueue for the rare sleeping path.  This primarily is a
tradeoff between a much smaller inode and a faster non-blocking
path vs faster wakeups, and we are much better off with the former.

A small downside is that we will lose lockdep checking for i_flock, but
given that it's always taken inside the ilock that should be acceptable.

Note that for example the inode writeback locking is implemented in a
very similar way.

We spent a lot of effort to maintain this field, but it always equals to the
fork size divided by the constant size of an extent.  The prime use of it is
to assert that the two stay in sync.  Just divide the fork size by the extent
size in the few places that we actually use it and remove the overhead
of maintaining it.  Also introduce a few helpers to consolidate the places
where we actually care about the value.

Christoph Hellwig 673e8e597c xfs: remove xfs_itruncate_data
This wrapper isn't overly useful, not to say rather confusing.

Around the call to xfs_itruncate_extents it does:

 - add tracing
 - add a few asserts in debug builds
 - conditionally update the inode size in two places
 - log the inode

Both the tracing and the inode logging can be moved to xfs_itruncate_extents
as they are useful for the attribute fork as well - in fact the attr code
already does an equivalent xfs_trans_log_inode call just after calling
xfs_itruncate_extents.  The conditional size updates are a mess, and there
was no reason to do them in two places anyway, as the first one was
conditional on the inode having extents - but without extents we
xfs_itruncate_extents would be a no-op and the placement wouldn't matter
anyway.  Instead move the size assignments and the asserts that make sense
to the callers that want it.

As a side effect of this clean up xfs_setattr_size by introducing variables
for the old and new inode size, and moving the size updates into a common
place.

If we are doing synchronous inode reclaim we block the VM from making
progress in memory reclaim.  So if we encouter a flush locked inode
promote it in the delwri list and wake up xfsbufd to write it out now.
Without this we can get hangs of up to 30 seconds during workloads hitting
synchronous inode reclaim.

The scheme is copied from what we do for dquot reclaims.

is needed now.

I'm actually starting to wonder if allowing inodes to be unlocked
at transaction commit really is worth the effort.  The only real
benefit is that they can be unlocked earlier when commiting a
synchronous transactions, but that could be solved by doing the
log force manually after the unlock, too.

Dave Chinner 5c8ed2021f xfs: introduce xfs_bmapi_read()
xfs_bmapi() currently handles both extent map reading and
allocation. As a result, the code is littered with "if (wr)"
branches to conditionally do allocation operations if required.
This makes the code much harder to follow and causes significant
indent issues with the code.

Given that read mapping is much simpler than allocation, we can
split out read mapping from xfs_bmapi() and reuse the logic that
we have already factored out do do all the hard work of handling the
extent map manipulations. The results in a much simpler function for
the common extent read operations, and will allow the allocation
code to be simplified in another commit.

Once xfs_bmapi_read() is implemented, convert all the callers of
xfs_bmapi() that are only reading extents to use the new function.

XFS_BUF_UNDELAYWRITE macro with direct calls to xfs_buf_delwri_dequeue
to make the explicit queuing/dequeuing more obvious.

Christoph Hellwig 8f04c47aa9 xfs: split xfs_itruncate_finish
Split the guts of xfs_itruncate_finish that loop over the existing extents
and calls xfs_bunmapi on them into a new helper, xfs_itruncate_externs.
Make xfs_attr_inactive call it directly instead of xfs_itruncate_finish,
which allows to simplify the latter a lot, by only letting it deal with
the data fork.  As a result xfs_itruncate_finish is renamed to
xfs_itruncate_data to make its use case more obvious.

Also remove the sync parameter from xfs_itruncate_data, which has been
unessecary since the introduction of the busy extent list in 2002, and
completely dead code since 2003 when the XFS_BMAPI_ASYNC parameter was
made a no-op.

I can't actually see why the xfs_attr_inactive needs to set the transaction
sync, but let's keep this patch simple and without changes in behaviour.

Also avoid passing a useless argument to xfs_isize_check, and make it
private to xfs_inode.c.

Christoph Hellwig 857b9778d8 xfs: kill xfs_itruncate_start
xfs_itruncate_start is a rather length wrapper that evaluates to a call
to xfs_ioend_wait and xfs_tosspages, and only has two callers.

Instead of using the complicated checks left over from IRIX where we
can to truncate the pagecache just call xfs_tosspages
(aka truncate_inode_pages) directly as we want to get rid of all data
after i_size, and truncate_inode_pages handles incorrect alignments
and too large offsets just fine.

Dave Chinner 1bfd8d0419 xfs: introduce inode cluster buffer trylocks for xfs_iflush
There is an ABBA deadlock between synchronous inode flushing in
xfs_reclaim_inode and xfs_icluster_free. xfs_icluster_free locks the
buffer, then takes inode ilocks, whilst synchronous reclaim takes
the ilock followed by the buffer lock in xfs_iflush().

To avoid this deadlock, separate the inode cluster buffer locking
semantics from the synchronous inode flush semantics, allowing
callers to attempt to lock the buffer but still issue synchronous IO
if it can get the buffer. This requires xfs_iflush() calls that
currently use non-blocking semantics to pass SYNC_TRYLOCK rather
than 0 as the flags parameter.

This allows xfs_reclaim_inode to avoid the deadlock on the buffer
lock and detect the failure so that it can drop the inode ilock and
restart the reclaim attempt on the inode. This allows
xfs_ifree_cluster to obtain the inode lock, mark the inode stale and
release it and hence defuse the deadlock situation. It also has the
pleasant side effect of avoiding IO in xfs_reclaim_inode when it
tries to next reclaim the inode as it is now marked stale.

Dave Chinner 65333b4c3d xfs: kill xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err() macro
In certain cases of inode corruption, the xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err()
macro is used to output an extra message in the corruption report.
That extra message is "unmount and run xfs_repair", which really
applies to any corruption report. Each case that this macro is
called (except one) a following call to xfs_corruption_error() is
made to optionally dump more information about the error.

Hence, move the output of "run xfs_repair" to xfs_corruption_error()
so that it is output on all corruption reports.  Also, convert the
callers of the repair macro that don't call xfs_corruption_error()
to call it, hence provide consiѕtent error reporting for all cases
where xfs_fs_repair_cmn_err() used to be called.

Currently we return iodes from xfs_ialloc with just a single reference held.
But we need two references, as one is dropped during transaction commit and
the second needs to be transfered to the VFS.  Change xfs_ialloc to use
xfs_iget plus xfs_trans_ijoin_ref to grab two references to the inode,
and remove the now superflous IHOLD calls from all callers.  This also
greatly simplifies the error handling in xfs_create and also allow to remove
xfs_trans_iget as no other callers are left.

Dave Chinner 1a3e8f3da0 xfs: convert inode cache lookups to use RCU locking
With delayed logging greatly increasing the sustained parallelism of inode
operations, the inode cache locking is showing significant read vs write
contention when inode reclaim runs at the same time as lookups. There is
also a lot more write lock acquistions than there are read locks (4:1 ratio)
so the read locking is not really buying us much in the way of parallelism.

To avoid the read vs write contention, change the cache to use RCU locking on
the read side. To avoid needing to RCU free every single inode, use the built
in slab RCU freeing mechanism. This requires us to be able to detect lookups of
freed inodes, so enѕure that ever freed inode has an inode number of zero and
the XFS_IRECLAIM flag set. We already check the XFS_IRECLAIM flag in cache hit
lookup path, but also add a check for a zero inode number as well.

We canthen convert all the read locking lockups to use RCU read side locking
and hence remove all read side locking.

This patch adds support for 32bit project quota identifiers.

On disk format is backward compatible with 16bit projid numbers. projid
on disk is now kept in two 16bit values - di_projid_lo (which holds the
same position as old 16bit projid value) and new di_projid_hi (takes
existing padding) and converts from/to 32bit value on the fly.

xfs_admin (for existing fs), mkfs.xfs (for new fs) needs to be used
to enable PROJID32BIT support.

Dave Chinner 5b3eed756c xfs: ensure we mark all inodes in a freed cluster XFS_ISTALE
Under heavy load parallel metadata loads (e.g. dbench), we can fail
to mark all the inodes in a cluster being freed as XFS_ISTALE as we
skip inodes we cannot get the XFS_ILOCK_EXCL or the flush lock on.
When this happens and the inode cluster buffer has already been
marked stale and freed, inode reclaim can try to write the inode out
as it is dirty and not marked stale. This can result in writing th
metadata to an freed extent, or in the case it has already
been overwritten trigger a magic number check failure and return an
EUCLEAN error such as:

Filesystem "ram0": inode 0x442ba1 background reclaim flush failed with 117

Fix this by ensuring that we hoover up all in memory inodes in the
cluster and mark them XFS_ISTALE when freeing the cluster.

Christoph Hellwig 939d723b72 xfs: kill the b_strat callback in xfs_buf
The b_strat callback is used by xfs_buf_iostrategy to perform additional
checks before submitting a buffer.  It is used in xfs_bwrite and when
writing out delayed buffers.  In xfs_bwrite it we can de-virtualize the
call easily as b_strat is set a few lines above the call to
xfs_buf_iostrategy.  For the delayed buffers the rationale is a bit
more complicated:

 - there are three callers of xfs_buf_delwri_queue, which places buffers
   on the delwri list:
    (1) xfs_bdwrite - this sets up b_strat, so it's fine
    (2) xfs_buf_iorequest.  None of the callers can have XBF_DELWRI set:
	- xlog_bdstrat is only used for log buffers, which are never delwri
	- _xfs_buf_read explicitly clears the delwri flag
	- xfs_buf_iodone_work retries log buffers only
	- xfsbdstrat - only used for reads, superblock writes without the
	  delwri flag, log I/O and file zeroing with explicitly allocated
	  buffers.
	- xfs_buf_iostrategy - only calls xfs_buf_iorequest if b_strat is
	  not set
    (3) xfs_buf_unlock
	- only puts the buffer on the delwri list if the DELWRI flag is
	  already set.  The DELWRI flag is only ever set in xfs_bwrite,
	  xfs_buf_iodone_callbacks, or xfs_trans_log_buf.  For
	  xfs_buf_iodone_callbacks and xfs_trans_log_buf we require
	  an initialized buf item, which means b_strat was set to
	  xfs_bdstrat_cb in xfs_buf_item_init.

Conclusion: we can just get rid of the callback and replace it with
explicit calls to xfs_bdstrat_cb.

Christoph Hellwig 898621d5a7 xfs: simplify inode to transaction joining
Currently we need to either call IHOLD or xfs_trans_ihold on an inode when
joining it to a transaction via xfs_trans_ijoin.

This patches instead makes xfs_trans_ijoin usable on it's own by doing
an implicity xfs_trans_ihold, which also allows us to drop the third
argument.  For the case where we want to hold a reference on the inode
a xfs_trans_ijoin_ref wrapper is added which does the IHOLD and marks
the inode for needing an xfs_iput.  In addition to the cleaner interface
to the caller this also simplifies the implementation.

Christoph Hellwig 288699feca xfs: drop dmapi hooks
Dmapi support was never merged upstream, but we still have a lot of hooks
bloating XFS for it, all over the fast pathes of the filesystem.

This patch drops over 700 lines of dmapi overhead.  If we'll ever get HSM
support in mainline at least the namespace events can be done much saner
in the VFS instead of the individual filesystem, so it's not like this
is much help for future work.

Dave Chinner 5b257b4a1f xfs: fix race in inode cluster freeing failing to stale inodes
When an inode cluster is freed, it needs to mark all inodes in memory as
XFS_ISTALE before marking the buffer as stale. This is eeded because the inodes
have a different life cycle to the buffer, and once the buffer is torn down
during transaction completion, we must ensure none of the inodes get written
back (which is what XFS_ISTALE does).

Unfortunately, xfs_ifree_cluster() has some bugs that lead to inodes not being
marked with XFS_ISTALE. This shows up when xfs_iflush() is called on these
inodes either during inode reclaim or tail pushing on the AIL.  The buffer is
read back, but no longer contains inodes and so triggers assert failures and
shutdowns. This was reproducable with at run.dbench10 invocation from xfstests.

There are two main causes of xfs_ifree_cluster() failing. The first is simple -
it checks in-memory inodes it finds in the per-ag icache to see if they are
clean without holding the flush lock. if they are clean it skips them
completely. However, If an inode is flushed delwri, it will
appear clean, but is not guaranteed to be written back until the flush lock has
been dropped. Hence we may have raced on the clean check and the inode may
actually be dirty. Hence always mark inodes found in memory stale before we
check properly if they are clean.

The second is more complex, and makes the first problem easier to hit.
Basically the in-memory inode scan is done with full knowledge it can be racing
with inode flushing and AIl tail pushing, which means that inodes that it can't
get the flush lock on might not be attached to the buffer after then in-memory
inode scan due to IO completion occurring. This is actually documented in the
code as "needs better interlocking". i.e. this is a zero-day bug.

Effectively, the in-memory scan must be done while the inode buffer is locked
and Io cannot be issued on it while we do the in-memory inode scan. This
ensures that inodes we couldn't get the flush lock on are guaranteed to be
attached to the cluster buffer, so we can then catch all in-memory inodes and
mark them stale.

Now that the inode cluster buffer is locked before the in-memory scan is done,
there is no need for the two-phase update of the in-memory inodes, so simplify
the code into two loops and remove the allocation of the temporary buffer used
to hold locked inodes across the phases.

If a filesystem is mounted without the inode64 mount option we
should still be able to access inodes not fitting into 32 bits, just
not created new ones.  For this to work we need to make sure the
inode cache radix tree is initialized for all allocation groups, not
just those we plan to allocate inodes from.  This patch makes sure
we initialize the inode cache radix tree for all allocation groups,
and also cleans xfs_initialize_perag up a bit to separate the
inode32 logical from the general perag structure setup.

Dave Chinner c854363e80 xfs: Use delayed write for inodes rather than async V2
We currently do background inode flush asynchronously, resulting in
inodes being written in whatever order the background writeback
issues them. Not only that, there are also blocking and non-blocking
asynchronous inode flushes, depending on where the flush comes from.

This patch completely removes asynchronous inode writeback. It
removes all the strange writeback modes and replaces them with
either a synchronous flush or a non-blocking delayed write flush.
That is, inode flushes will only issue IO directly if they are
synchronous, and background flushing may do nothing if the operation
would block (e.g. on a pinned inode or buffer lock).

Delayed write flushes will now result in the inode buffer sitting in
the delwri queue of the buffer cache to be flushed by either an AIL
push or by the xfsbufd timing out the buffer. This will allow
accumulation of dirty inode buffers in memory and allow optimisation
of inode cluster writeback at the xfsbufd level where we have much
greater queue depths than the block layer elevators. We will also
get adjacent inode cluster buffer IO merging for free when a later
patch in the series allows sorting of the delayed write buffers
before dispatch.

This effectively means that any inode that is written back by
background writeback will be seen as flush locked during AIL
pushing, and will result in the buffers being pushed from there.
This writeback path is currently non-optimal, but the next patch
in the series will fix that problem.

A side effect of this delayed write mechanism is that background
inode reclaim will no longer directly flush inodes, nor can it wait
on the flush lock. The result is that inode reclaim must leave the
inode in the reclaimable state until it is clean. Hence attempts to
reclaim a dirty inode in the background will simply skip the inode
until it is clean and this allows other mechanisms (i.e. xfsbufd) to
do more optimal writeback of the dirty buffers. As a result, the
inode reclaim code has been rewritten so that it no longer relies on
the ambiguous return values of xfs_iflush() to determine whether it
is safe to reclaim an inode.

Portions of this patch are derived from patches by Christoph
Hellwig.

Dave Chinner 777df5afdb xfs: Make inode reclaim states explicit
A.K.A.: don't rely on xfs_iflush() return value in reclaim

We have gradually been moving checks out of the reclaim code because
they are duplicated in xfs_iflush(). We've had a history of problems
in this area, and many of them stem from the overloading of the
return values from xfs_iflush() and interaction with inode flush
locking to determine if the inode is safe to reclaim.

With the desire to move to delayed write flushing of inodes and
non-blocking inode tree reclaim walks, the overloading of the
return value of xfs_iflush makes it very difficult to determine
the correct thing to do next.

This patch explicitly re-adds the checks to the inode reclaim code,
removing the reliance on the return value of xfs_iflush() to
determine what to do next. It also means that we can clearly
document all the inode states that reclaim must handle and hence
we can easily see that we handled all the necessary cases.

This also removes the need for the xfs_inode_clean() check in
xfs_iflush() as all callers now check this first (safely).

Remove the XFS_LOG_FORCE argument which was always set, and the
XFS_LOG_URGE define, which was never used.

Split xfs_log_force into a two helpers - xfs_log_force which forces
the whole log, and xfs_log_force_lsn which forces up to the
specified LSN.  The underlying implementations already were entirely
separate, as were the users.

Also re-indent the new _xfs_log_force/_xfs_log_force which
previously had a weird coding style.

Because inodes remain in cache much longer than inode buffers do
under memory pressure, we can get the situation where we have
stale, dirty inodes being reclaimed but the backing storage has
been freed.  Hence we should never, ever flush XFS_ISTALE inodes
to disk as there is no guarantee that the backing buffer is in
cache and still marked stale when the flush occurs.

Christoph Hellwig 0b1b213fcf xfs: event tracing support
Convert the old xfs tracing support that could only be used with the
out of tree kdb and xfsidbg patches to use the generic event tracer.

To use it make sure CONFIG_EVENT_TRACING is enabled and then enable
all xfs trace channels by:

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/enable

or alternatively enable single events by just doing the same in one
event subdirectory, e.g.

   echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/xfs/xfs_ihold/enable

or set more complex filters, etc. In Documentation/trace/events.txt
all this is desctribed in more detail.  To reads the events do a

   cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace

Compared to the last posting this patch converts the tracing mostly to
the one tracepoint per callsite model that other users of the new
tracing facility also employ.  This allows a very fine-grained control
of the tracing, a cleaner output of the traces and also enables the
perf tool to use each tracepoint as a virtual performance counter,
     allowing us to e.g. count how often certain workloads git various
     spots in XFS.  Take a look at

for some examples.

Also the btree tracing isn't included at all yet, as it will require
additional core tracing features not in mainline yet, I plan to
deliver it later.

And the really nice thing about this patch is that it actually removes

Christoph Hellwig f9581b1443 xfs: implement ->dirty_inode to fix timestamp handling
This is picking up on Felix's repost of Dave's patch to implement a
.dirty_inode method.  We really need this notification because
the VFS keeps writing directly into the inode structure instead
of going through methods to update this state.  In addition to
the long-known atime issue we now also have a caller in VM code
that updates c/mtime that way for shared writeable mmaps.  And
I found another one that no one has noticed in practice in the FIFO
code.

So implement ->dirty_inode to set i_update_core whenever the
inode gets externally dirtied, and switch the c/mtime handling to
the same scheme we already use for atime (always picking up
the value from the Linux inode).

Note that this patch also removes the xfs_synchronize_atime call
in xfs_reclaim it was superflous as we already synchronize the time
when writing the inode via the log (xfs_inode_item_format) or the
normal buffers (xfs_iflush_int).

In addition also remove the I_CLEAR check before copying the Linux
timestamps - now that we always have the Linux inode available
we can always use the timestamps in it.

Also switch to just using file_update_time for regular reads/writes -
that will get us all optimization done to it for free and make
sure we notice early when it breaks.

Ramon tested XFS with a modified version of fsfuzzer and hit a NULL
pointer dereference in __xfs_get_blocks due to the RT device target
pointer being NULL.

To fix this reject inode with the realtime bit set on a a filesystem

Christoph Hellwig 2809f76afc xfs: sanity check attr fork size
Recently we have quite a few kerneloops reports about dereferencing a NULL
if_data in the attribute fork.  From looking over the code this can only
happen if we pass a 0 size argument to xfs_iformat_local.  This implies some
sort of corruption and in fact the only mailinglist report about this from
earlier this year was after a powerfail presumably on a system with write
cache and without barriers.

Add a quick sanity check for the attr fork size in xfs_iformat to catch
these early and without an oops.

Christoph Hellwig 6d73cf133c [XFS] resync headers with libxfs
- xfs_sb.h add the XFS_SB_VERSION2_PARENTBIT features2 that has been
   around in userspace for some time
 - xfs_inode.h: move a few things out of __KERNEL__ that are needed by
   userspace
 - xfs_mount.h: only include xfs_sync.h under __KERNEL__
 - xfs_inode.c: minor whitespace fixup.  I accidentaly changes this when
   importing this file for use by userspace.

Christoph Hellwig 25e41b3d52 move vn_iowait / vn_iowake into xfs_aops.c
The whole machinery to wait on I/O completion is related to the I/O path
and should be there instead of in xfs_vnode.c.  Also give the functions
more descriptive names.

Christoph Hellwig 92bfc6e7c4 [XFS] embededd struct xfs_imap into xfs_inode
Most uses of struct xfs_imap are to map and inode to a buffer.  To avoid
copying around the inode location information we should just embedd a
strcut xfs_imap into the xfs_inode.  To make sure it doesn't bloat an
inode the im_len is changed to a ushort, which is fine as that's what
the users exepect anyway.

Christoph Hellwig 94e1b69d1a [XFS] merge xfs_imap into xfs_dilocate
xfs_imap is the only caller of xfs_dilocate and doesn't add any significant
value.  Merge the two functions and document the various cases we have for
inode cluster lookup in the new xfs_imap.

Also remove the unused im_agblkno and im_ioffset fields from struct xfs_imap
while we're at it.

Christoph Hellwig a194189503 [XFS] remove dead code for old inode item recovery
We have removed the support for old-style inode items a while ago and
xlog_recover_do_inode_trans is now only called for XFS_LI_INODE items.
That means we can remove the call to xfs_imap there and with it the
XFS_IMAP_LOOKUP that is set by all other callers.  We can also mark
xfs_imap static now.

Christoph Hellwig 76d8b277f7 [XFS] stop using xfs_itobp in xfs_iread
The only caller of xfs_itobp that doesn't have i_blkno setup is now
the initial inode read.  It needs access to the whole xfs_imap so using
xfs_inotobp is not an option.  Instead opencode the buffer lookup in
xfs_iread and kill all the functionality for the initial map from
xfs_itobp.

Christoph Hellwig 81591fe2db [XFS] kill xfs_dinode_core_t
Now that we have a separate xfs_icdinode_t for the in-core inode which
gets logged there is no need anymore for the xfs_dinode vs xfs_dinode_core
split - the fact that part of the structure gets logged through the inode
log item and a small part not can better be described in a comment.

All sizeof operations on the dinode_core either really wanted the
icdinode and are switched to that one, or had already added the size
of the agi unlinked list pointer.  Later both will be replaced with
helpers once we get the larger CRC-enabled dinode.

Removing the data and attribute fork unions also has the advantage that
xfs_dinode.h doesn't need to pull in every header under the sun.

While we're at it also add some more comments describing the dinode
structure.
