Tejun Heo 0fc71e3d65 block: add partition attribute for partition number
With extended devt, finding out the partition number becomes a bit
more challenging as subtracting the minor number from that of the
parent device doesn't work anymore. The only thing left is parsing
the partition name which is brittle and not exactly universal (some
have '-' between the device name and partition number while others
don't). This patch introduced partition attribute which contains the
partition number of the device. This should make finding partitions
and its index easier.

This problem and solution were suggested by H. Peter Anvin.

Kay Sievers ac0d86f580 block: sanitize invalid partition table entries
We currently follow blindly what the partition table lies about the
disk, and let the kernel create block devices which can not be accessed.
Trying to identify the device leads to kernel logs full of:
  sdb: rw=0, want=73392, limit=28800
attempt to access beyond end of device

Here is an example of a broken partition table, where sda2 starts
behind the end of the disk, and sdb3 is larger than the entire disk:
  Disk /dev/sdb: 14 MB, 14745600 bytes
  1 heads, 29 sectors/track, 993 cylinders, total 28800 sectors
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
  /dev/sdb1 29 7800 3886 83 Linux
  /dev/sdb2 37801 45601 3900+ 83 Linux
  /dev/sdb3 15602 73402 28900+ 83 Linux
  /dev/sdb4 23403 28796 2697 83 Linux

The kernel creates these completely invalid devices, which can not be
accessed, or may lead to other unpredictable failures:
  grep . /sys/class/block/sdb*/{start,size}
  /sys/class/block/sdb/size:28800
  /sys/class/block/sdb1/start:29
  /sys/class/block/sdb1/size:7772
  /sys/class/block/sdb2/start:37801
  /sys/class/block/sdb2/size:7801
  /sys/class/block/sdb3/start:15602
  /sys/class/block/sdb3/size:57801
  /sys/class/block/sdb4/start:23403
  /sys/class/block/sdb4/size:5394

With this patch, we ignore partitions which start behind the end of the disk,
and limit partitions to the end of the disk if they pretend to be larger:
  grep . /sys/class/block/sdb*/{start,size}
  /sys/class/block/sdb/size:28800
  /sys/class/block/sdb1/start:29
  /sys/class/block/sdb1/size:7772
  /sys/class/block/sdb3/start:15602
  /sys/class/block/sdb3/size:13198
  /sys/class/block/sdb4/start:23403
  /sys/class/block/sdb4/size:5394

These warnings are printed to the kernel log:
sdb: p2 ignored, start 37801 is behind the end of the disk
sdb: p3 size 57801 limited to end of disk

Tejun Heo 3e1a7ff8a0 block: allow disk to have extended device number
Now that disk and partition handlings are mostly unified, it's easy to
allow disk to have extended device number. This patch makes
add_disk() use extended device number if disk->minors is zero. Both
sd and ide-disk are updated to use this.

* sd_format_disk_name() is implemented which can generically determine
the drive name. This removes disk number restriction stemming from
  limited device names.

* If sd index goes over SD_MAX_DISKS (which can be increased now BTW),
sd simply doesn't initialize minors letting block layer choose
  extended device number.

* If CONFIG_DEBUG_EXT_DEVT is set, both sd and ide-disk always set
minors to 0 and use extended device numbers.

Tejun Heo 689d6fac40 block: replace @ext_minors with GENHD_FL_EXT_DEVT
With previous changes, it's meaningless to limit the number of
partitions. Replace @ext_minors with GENHD_FL_EXT_DEVT such that
setting the flag allows the disk to have maximum number of allowed
partitions (only limited by the number of entries in parsed_partitions
as determined by MAX_PART constant).

This kills not-too-pretty alloc_disk_ext[_node]() functions and makes
@minors parameter to alloc_disk[_node]() unnecessary. The parameter
is left alone to avoid disturbing the users.

disk->__part used to be statically allocated to the maximum possible
number of partitions. This patch makes partition array allocation
dynamic. The added overhead is minimal as only real change is one
memory dereference changed to RCU one. This saves both a bit of

increasing partition limit easier.

Tejun Heo 074a7aca7a block: move stats from disk to part0
Move stats related fields - stamp, in_flight, dkstats - from disk to
part0 and unify stat handling such that...

* part_stat_*() now updates part0 together if the specified partition
is not part0. ie. part_stat_*() are now essentially all_stat_*().

* {disk|all}_stat_*() are gone.

* part_round_stats() is updated similary. It handles part0 stats
  automatically and disk_round_stats() is killed.

* part_{inc|dec}_in_fligh() is implemented which automatically updates
part0 stats for parts other than part0.

* disk_map_sector_rcu() is updated to return part0 if no part matches.
Combined with the above changes, this makes NULL special case
  handling in callers unnecessary.

* Separate stats show code paths for disk are collapsed into part
  stats show code paths.

* Rename disk_stat_lock/unlock() to part_stat_lock/unlock()

While at it, reposition stat handling macros a bit and add missing
parentheses around macro parameters.

Tejun Heo b5d0b9df0b block: introduce partition 0
genhd and partition code handled disk and partitions separately. All
information about the whole disk was in struct genhd and partitions in
struct hd_struct. However, the whole disk (part0) and other
partitions have a lot in common and the data structures end up having
good number of common fields and thus separate code paths doing the
same thing. Also, the partition array was indexed by partno - 1 which
gets pretty confusing at times.

This patch introduces partition 0 and makes the partition array
indexed by partno. Following patches will unify the handling of disk
and parts piece-by-piece.

This patch also implements disk_partitionable() which tests whether a
disk is partitionable. With coming dynamic partition array change,
the most common usage of disk_max_parts() will be testing whether a
disk is partitionable and the number of max partitions will become
much less important.

Tejun Heo bcce3de1be block: implement extended dev numbers
Implement extended device numbers. A block driver can tell block
layer that it wants to use extended device numbers. After the usual
minor space is used up, block layer automatically allocates devt's
from EXT_BLOCK_MAJOR.

Currently only one major number is allocated for this but as the
allocation is strictly on-demand, ~1mil minor space under it should
suffice unless the system actually has more than ~1mil partitions and
if that ever happens adding more majors to the extended devt area is
easy.

Due to internal implementation issues, the first partition can't be
allocated on the extended area. In other words, genhd->minors should
at least be 1. This limitation will be lifted by later changes.

Tejun Heo c995905916 block: fix diskstats access
There are two variants of stat functions - ones prefixed with double
underbars which don't care about preemption and ones without which
disable preemption before manipulating per-cpu counters. It's unclear
whether the underbarred ones assume that preemtion is disabled on
entry as some callers don't do that.

This patch unifies diskstats access by implementing disk_stat_lock()
and disk_stat_unlock() which take care of both RCU (for partition
access) and preemption (for per-cpu counter access). diskstats access
should always be enclosed between the two functions. As such, there's
no need for the versions which disables preemption. They're removed
and double underbars ones are renamed to drop the underbars. As an
extra argument is added, there's no danger of using the old version
unconverted.

disk_stat_lock() uses get_cpu() and returns the cpu index and all
diskstat functions which access per-cpu counters now has @cpu
argument to help RT.

This change adds RCU or preemption operations at some places but also
collapses several preemption ops into one at others. Overall, the
performance difference should be negligible as all involved ops are
very lightweight per-cpu ones.

Tejun Heo e71bf0d0ee block: fix disk->part[] dereferencing race
disk->part[] is protected by its matching bdev's lock. However,
non-critical accesses like collecting stats and printing out sysfs and
proc information used to be performed without any locking. As
partitions can come and go dynamically, partitions can go away
underneath those non-critical accesses. As some of those accesses are
writes, this theoretically can lead to silent corruption.

This patch fixes the race by using RCU for the partition array and dev
reference counter to hold partitions.

* Rename disk->part[] to disk->__part[] to make sure no one outside
genhd layer proper accesses it directly.

* Use RCU for disk->__part[] dereferencing.

* Implement disk_{get|put}_part() which can be used to get and put
  partitions from gendisk respectively.

* Iterators are implemented to help iterate through all partitions
  safely.

* Functions which require RCU readlock are marked with _rcu suffix.

* Use disk_put_part() in __blkdev_put() instead of directly putting
  the contained kobject.

Tejun Heo f331c0296f block: don't depend on consecutive minor space
* Implement disk_devt() and part_devt() and use them to directly
access devt instead of computing it from ->major and ->first_minor.

Note that all references to ->major and ->first_minor outside of
block layer is used to determine devt of the disk (the part0) and as
->major and ->first_minor will continue to represent devt for the
disk, converting these users aren't strictly necessary. However,
  convert them for consistency.

* Implement disk_max_parts() to avoid directly deferencing
  genhd->minors.

* Update bdget_disk() such that it doesn't assume consecutive minor
  space.

* Move devt computation from register_disk() to add_disk() and make it
the only one (all other usages use the initially determined value).

These changes clean up the code and will help disk->part dereference
fix and extended block device numbers.

In hd_struct, @partno is used to denote partition number and a number
of other places use @part to denote hd_struct. Functions use @part
and @index instead. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to

variable represents partition number.

Also, print out functions use @f or @part for seq_file argument. Use

Tejun Heo 88e341261c block: update add_partition() error handling
d805dda4 tried to fix error case handling in add_partition() but had a
few problems.

* disk->part[] entry is set early and left dangling if operation
  fails.

* Once device initialized, the last put_device() is responsible for
freeing all the resources. The failure path freed part_stats and p
regardless of put_device() causing double free.

* holders subdir holds reference to the disk device, so failure path
should remove it to release resources properly which was missing.

This patch fixes the above problems and while at it move partition
slot busy check into add_partition() for completeness and inlines
holders subdirectory creation. Using separate function for it just
obfuscates the code.

Frank Seidel 0607fd0258 fat: detect media without partition table correctly
I received a complaint that some FAT formated medias (e.g. sd memory cards)
trigger a "unknown partition table" message even though there is no partition
table and they work correctly, while in general (when e.g. formated with
mkdosfs or even Windows Vista) this message is not shown.

Currently this seems only to happen when the medias get formatted with Windows
XP (and possibly Win 2000). Then the boot indicator byte contains garbage
(part of text message) and so do the other parts checked by msdos_paritition
which then later triggers this message.

References: novell bug #364365

Most fat formatted media without partition table contains zeros in the boot
indication and the other tested bytes and so falls through the checks in
msdos_partition, leading it to return with 1 (all is fine).

But some (e.g. WinXP formatted) fat fomated medias don't use boot_ind and so
the check fails and causes a "unkown partition table" warning eventhough there
is none and everything would be fine.

This additional check directly verifies if there is a fat formatted medium
without a partition table.

Tejun Heo 7b595756ec sysfs: kill unnecessary attribute->owner
sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After
deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper,
so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that
often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to
accessing removed modules.

This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with
this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the
backing module from being unloaded.

Olaf Hering 4419d1ac7d [PATCH] relax check for AIX in msdos partition table
The patch to identify AIX disks and ignore them has caused at least one
machine to fail to find the root partition on 2.6.19. The patch is:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/7/31/117

The problem is some disk formatters do not blow away the first 4 bytes
of the disk. If the disk we are installing to used to have AIX on it,
then the first 4 bytes will still have IBMA in EBCDIC.

The install in question was debian etch. Im not sure what the best fix
is, perhaps the AIX detection code could check more than the first 4
bytes.

The whole partition info for primary partitions is in this block:

  dd if=/dev/sdb count=$(( 4 * 16 )) bs=1 skip=$(( 0x1be ))

All other data do not matter, beside the 0x55aa marker at the end of the
first block.

Fabio Massimo Di Nitto d18d7682c1 [PARTITION]: Add whole_disk attribute.
Some partitioning systems create special partitions that
span the entire disk. One example are Sun partitions, and
this whole-disk partition exists to tell the firmware the
extent of the entire device so it can load the boot block
and do other things.

Such partitions should not be treated as normal partitions,
because all the other partitions overlap this whole-disk one.
So we'd see multiple instances of the same UUID etc. which
we do not want. udev and friends can thus search for this
'whole_disk' attribute and use it to decide to ignore the
partition.

Suzuki Kp 5127d002f9 [PATCH] fix rescan_partitions to return errors properly
The current rescan_partition implementation ignores the errors that comes from
the lower layer. It reports success for unknown partitions as well as I/O
error cases while reading the partition information.

The unknown partition is not (and will not be) considered as an error in the
kernel, since there are legal users of it (e.g, members of a RAID5 MD Device
or a new disk which is not partitioned at all ). Changing this behaviour
would scare the user about a serious problem with their disk and is not
recommended. Thus for both "unknown partitions" to the Linux (eg., DEC
VMS,Novell Netware) and the legal users of NULL partition, would still be
reported as "SUCCESS".

The patch attached here, scares the user about something which he does need to
worry about. i.e, returning -EIO on disk I/O errors while reading the
partition information.

Jeff Garzik eee44cca66 [PATCH] fs/partitions/check: add sysfs error handling
Handle errors thrown in disk_sysfs_symlinks(), and propagate back to
caller.

The callers and associated functions don't do a real good job of handling
kobject errors anyway (add_partition, register_disk, rescan_partitions), so
this should do until something better comes along.

David Howells 9361401eb7 [PATCH] BLOCK: Make it possible to disable the block layer [try #6]
Make it possible to disable the block layer. Not all embedded devices require
it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require
the block layer to be present.

This patch does the following:

(*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev
     support.

(*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls
an item that uses the block layer. This includes:

     (*) Block I/O tracing.

     (*) Disk partition code.

(*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS.

(*) The SCSI layer. As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the
block layer to do scheduling. Some drivers that use SCSI facilities -
such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this.

(*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM
     	 drivers.

(*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL.

(*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by
taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book.

(*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and
linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set. sector_div() is,
however, still used in places, and so is still available.

(*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and
     parts of linux/fs.h.

(*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

 (*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK
     is not enabled.

(*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are
required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set:

(*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening).

 (*) Makes some /proc changes:

(*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs.

     (*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.

(*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if
given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified.

(*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined. This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2.

(*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return
error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so).

(*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen.

Olaf Hering e1dfa92dca [PATCH] ignore partition table on disks with AIX label
The on-disk data structures from AIX are not known, also the filesystem
layout is not known. There is a msdos partition signature at the end of
the first block, and the kernel recognizes 3 small (and overlapping)
partitions. But they are not usable. Maybe the firmware uses it to find
the bootloader for AIX, but AIX boots also if the first block is cleared.

This is the content of the partition table:
 # dd if=/dev/sdb count=$(( 4 * 16 )) bs=1 skip=$(( 0x1be )) | xxd
0000000: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 ................
0000010: 80ff ffff 41ff ffff 1b11 0000 381b 0000 ....A.......8...
0000020: 00ff ffff 41ff ffff 0211 0000 1900 0000 ....A...........
0000030: 80ff ffff 41ff ffff 1b11 0000 381b 0000 ....A.......8...

Handle the whole disk as empty disk.

This fixes also YaST which compares the output from parted (and formerly
fdisk) with /proc/partitions. fdisk recognizes the AIX label since a long
time, SuSE has a patch for parted to handle the disk label as unknown.

dmesg will look like this:
 sda: [AIX] unknown partition table

Tested on an IBM B50 with AIX V4.3.3.

Jeff Mahoney 81a42d298d [DISKLABEL] SUN: Fix signed int usage for sector count
The current sun disklabel code uses a signed int for the sector count.
When partitions larger than 1 TB are used, the cast to a sector_t causes
the partition sizes to be invalid:

 # cat /proc/paritions | grep sdan
   66 112 2146435072 sdan

Peter Oberparleiter 25e206b54b [PATCH] partitions: let partitions inherit policy from disk
Change the partition code in fs/partitions/check.c to initialize a newly
detected partition's policy field with that of the containing block device
(see patch below).

My reasoning is that function set_disk_ro() in block/genhd.c modifies the
policy field (read-only indicator) of a disk and all contained partitions.
When a partition is detected after the call to set_disk_ro(), the policy
field of this partition will currently not inherit the disk's policy field.
This behavior poses a problem in cases where a block device can be
'logically de- and reactivated' like e.g. the s390 DASD driver because
partition detection may run after the policy field has been modified.

Mike Miller 98bd34eaf1 [PATCH] make kernel warn about incorrectly sized partitions
Sometimes partitions claim to be larger than the reported capacity of a
disk device. This patch makes the kernel warn about those partitions.

We still permit these patitions to be used. Quoting Andries Brouwer
<Andries.Brouwer@cwi.nl>:

Case 1: The kernel is mistaken about the size of the disk. (There are
commands to clip a disk to a certain capacity, there are jumpers to tell a
disk that it should report a certain capacity etc. Usually this is because
of BIOS bugs. In bad cases the machine will crash in the BIOS and hence fail
to boot if the disk reports full capacity.) In such cases actually accessing
the blocks of the partition may work fine, or may work fine after running an
unclip utility. I wrote "setmax" some years ago precisely for this reason.

Case 2: There was a messy partition table (maybe just a rounding error) but
the actual filesystem on the partition is contained in the physical disk.
Now using the filesystem goes without problem.

Case 3: Both partition and filesystem extend beyond the end of the disk. In
forensic or debugging situations one often uses a copy of the start of a
disk. Now access beyond the end gives an expected I/O error.

Linus Torvalds 032ebf2620 Alternative fix for MMC oops on unmount after removal
Make sure to clear the driverfs_dev pointer when we do del_gendisk() (on

Also move the KOBJ_REMOVE uevent handler up, so that the uevent still

Kay Sievers d4d7e5dffc [PATCH] BLOCK: delay all uevents until partition table is scanned
[BLOCK] delay all uevents until partition table is scanned

Here we delay the annoucement of all block device events until the
disk's partition table is scanned and all partition devices are already
created and sysfs is populated.

We have a bunch of old bugs for removable storage handling where we
probe successfully for a filesystem on the raw disk, but at the
same time the kernel recognizes a partition table and creates partition
devices.
Currently there is no sane way to tell if partitions will show up or not
at the time the disk device is announced to userspace. With the delayed
events we can simply skip any probe for a filesystem on the raw disk when
we find already present partitions.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt e8222502ee [PATCH] powerpc: Kill _machine and hard-coded platform numbers
This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the
powerpc platform probe code to use a better mechanism. With this,
board support files can simply declare a new machine type with a
macro, and implement a probe() function that uses the flattened
device-tree to detect if they apply for a given machine.

We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of
_machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. This commit also
changes various drivers to use the new macro instead of looking at
