Allow the pm_power_off function variable in PPC to work as an override.
This makes the function consistent with the other architectures and it
allows generic poweroff operations (like those provided in IPMI
systems) to work properly on PPC.

Eran Ben-Avi <eranpublic@yahoo.com> pointed out that the arch/ppc version
of smp_generic_take_timebase disables interrupts on entry but exits without
restoring them. However, both it and the arch/powerpc version have another
problem, which is that they use local_irq_disable/enable rather than
local_irq_save/restore, and they are called with interrupts disabled.
This fixes both problems; it changes a return to a break in the arch/ppc
version, and changes both versions to use local_irq_save/restore.

The latest toolchains can produce a new ELF section in DSOs and
dynamically-linked executables. The new section ".gnu.hash" replaces
".hash", and allows for more efficient runtime symbol lookups by the
dynamic linker. The new ld option --hash-style={sysv|gnu|both} controls
whether to produce the old ".hash", the new ".gnu.hash", or both. In some
new systems such as Fedora Core 6, gcc by default passes --hash-style=gnu
to the linker, so that a standard invocation of "gcc -shared" results in
producing a DSO with only ".gnu.hash". The new ".gnu.hash" sections need
to be dealt with the same way as ".hash" sections in all respects; only the
dynamic linker cares about their contents. To work with older dynamic
linkers (i.e. preexisting releases of glibc), a binary must have the old
".hash" section. The --hash-style=both option produces binaries that a new
dynamic linker can use more efficiently, but an old dynamic linker can
still handle.
The new section runs afoul of the custom linker scripts used to build vDSO
images for the kernel. On ia64, the failure mode for this is a boot-time
panic because the vDSO's PT_IA_64_UNWIND segment winds up ill-formed.
This patch addresses the problem in two ways.
First, it mentions ".gnu.hash" in all the linker scripts alongside ".hash".
This produces correct vDSO images with --hash-style=sysv (or old tools),
with --hash-style=gnu, or with --hash-style=both.
Second, it passes the --hash-style=sysv option when building the vDSO
images, so that ".gnu.hash" is not actually produced. This is the most
conservative choice for compatibility with any old userland. There is some
concern that some ancient glibc builds (though not any known old production
system) might choke on --hash-style=both binaries. The optimizations
provided by the new style of hash section do not really matter for a DSO
with a tiny number of symbols, as the vDSO has. If someone wants to use
=gnu or =both for their vDSO builds and worry less about that
compatibility, just change the option and the linker script changes will
make any choice work fine.

screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be
included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to
directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to
communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this
patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a
mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error.

Fixed up trivial conflict in drivers/ide/pci/cmd64x.c (the printk that
was changed by the 64-bit resources had been deleted in the meantime ;)
With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now
considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI.
I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before
memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add.
In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(),
which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be
onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be
there.
This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu
until node is onlined.
This removes node arguments from register_cpu().
Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of
struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug
patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not
necessary now.
This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It
is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this.
Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard
to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it.
Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed
by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch.

Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of
VM_SHM.
remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since
it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not
place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap
anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range.
After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it.

for_each_cpu() actually iterates across all possible CPUs. We've had mistakes
in the past where people were using for_each_cpu() where they should have been
iterating across only online or present CPUs. This is inefficient and
possibly buggy.
We're renaming for_each_cpu() to for_each_possible_cpu() to avoid this in the
future.
This patch replaces for_each_cpu with for_each_possible_cpu.

32-bit CHRP machines are now supported only in arch/powerpc, as are
all 64-bit PowerPC processors. This means that we don't use
Open Firmware on any platform in arch/ppc any more.
This makes PReP support a single-platform option like every other
platform support option in arch/ppc now, thus CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM
is gone from arch/ppc. CONFIG_PPC_PREP is the option that selects
PReP support and is generally what has replaced
CONFIG_PPC_MULTIPLATFORM within arch/ppc.
_machine is all but dead now, being #defined to 0.
Updated Makefiles, comments and Kconfig options generally to reflect
these changes.

All of the things needed for 32-bit ARCH=powerpc builds have now
moved to arch/powerpc/kernel, so we don't need to go down into
arch/ppc/kernel any more, and we can remove the CONFIG_PPC_MERGE
conditional from arch/ppc/kernel/Makefile.
There were two files still referenced in the merge section of
arch/ppc/kernel/Makefile: ppc-stub.o, depending on CONFIG_KGDB,
and dma-mapping.o, depending on CONFIG_NOT_COHERENT_CACHE. None
of the platforms currently in ARCH=powerpc have caches that
aren't coherent with DMA, but when we do get one we'll move
dma-mapping.c over. As for CONFIG_KGDB, none of the Kconfig
files in the tree define it, so I'll let it languish for now.

This unifies the 32-bit (ARCH=ppc and ARCH=powerpc) and 64-bit idle
loops. It brings over the concept of having a ppc_md.power_save
function from 32-bit to ARCH=powerpc, which lets us get rid of
native_idle(). With this we will also be able to simplify the idle
handling for pSeries and cell.

When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch
the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this
is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu().
This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very
few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded
test to use the preferred helper macros.

A careful reading of the recent changes to the system call entry/exit
paths revealed several problems, plus some things that could be
simplified and improved:
* 32-bit wasn't testing the _TIF_NOERROR bit in the syscall fast exit
path, so it was only doing anything with it once it saw some other
bit being set. In other words, the noerror behaviour would apply to
the next system call where we had to reschedule or deliver a signal,
which is not necessarily the current system call.
* 32-bit wasn't doing the call to ptrace_notify in the syscall exit
path when the _TIF_SINGLESTEP bit was set.
* _TIF_RESTOREALL was in both _TIF_USER_WORK_MASK and
_TIF_PERSYSCALL_MASK, which is odd since _TIF_RESTOREALL is only set
by system calls. I took it out of _TIF_USER_WORK_MASK.
* On 64-bit, _TIF_RESTOREALL wasn't causing the non-volatile registers
to be restored (unless perhaps a signal was delivered or the syscall
was traced or single-stepped). Thus the non-volatile registers
weren't restored on exit from a signal handler. We probably got
away with it mostly because signal handlers written in C wouldn't
alter the non-volatile registers.
* On 32-bit I simplified the code and made it more like 64-bit by
making the syscall exit path jump to ret_from_except to handle
preemption and signal delivery.
* 32-bit was calling do_signal unnecessarily when _TIF_RESTOREALL was
set - but I think because of that 32-bit was actually restoring the
non-volatile registers on exit from a signal handler.
* I changed the order of enabling interrupts and saving the
non-volatile registers before calling do_syscall_trace_leave; now we
enable interrupts first.

altivec_unavailable_exception is called without setting r3... it looks like
the r3 that actually gets passed in as struct pt_regs *regs is the
undisturbed value of r3 at the time the altivec instruction was encountered.
The user actually gets to choose the pt_regs printed in the Oops!
This fixes the oops by passing the correct pt_regs pointer to
altivec_unavailable_exception.

When I removed the powermac support from arch/ppc/kernel/pci.c,
I overlooked the fact that that file is used in 32-bit ARCH=powerpc
builds. To prevent problems in future, restore the original version
of that file as arch/powerpc/kernel/pci_32.c, and use that.

This makes it possible to build kernels for PReP and/or CHRP
with ARCH=ppc by removing the (non-building) powermac support.
It's now also possible to select PReP and CHRP independently.
Powermac users should now build with ARCH=powerpc instead of
ARCH=ppc. (This does mean that it is no longer possible to
build a 32-bit kernel for a G5.)

The arch/powerpc version of process.c exports get_wchan itself. When
I moved ARCH=ppc over to using arch/powerpc/kernel/process.c the
get_wchan export in arch/ppc/kernel/ppc_ksyms.c became redundant, so
remove it.

entries for the kernel direct virtual mapping on 8xx, thus reducing TLB
space consumed for the kernel.
Test used: writing 40MB from /dev/zero to file in ext2fs over
RAMDISK.

- In case of system crash, current state of cpu registers is saved in memory
in elf note format. So far memory for storing elf notes was being allocated
statically for NR_CPUS.
- This patch introduces dynamic allocation of memory for storing elf notes.
It uses alloc_percpu() interface. This should lead to better memory usage.
- Introduced based on Andi Kleen's and Eric W. Biederman's suggestions.
- This patch also moves memory allocation for elf notes from architecture
dependent portion to architecture independent portion. Now crash_notes is
architecture independent. The whole idea is that size of memory to be
allocated per cpu (MAX_NOTE_BYTES) can be architecture dependent and
allocation of this memory can be architecture independent.

This updates the OF address parsers to return the IO flags
indicating the type of address obtained. It also adds a PCI
call for converting physical addresses that hit IO space into
into IO tokens, and add routines that return the translated
addresses into struct resource

This makes ARCH=ppc build in your powerpc tree again, with the new
syscall entry/exit path.
Still doesn't actually boot on my Pegasos; the last thing I see is
'MMU:exit'. But at least it builds -- I'll look at why it doesn't boot
later, so that I can see if the mv643xx_eth actually works with ARCH=ppc
(it doesn't with ARCH=powerpc; two in every three packets I receive are
offset by 4 bytes).

This patch unifies udbg for both ppc32 and ppc64 when building the
merged achitecture. xmon now has a single "back end". The powermac udbg
stuff gets enriched with some ADB capabilities and btext output. In
addition, the early_init callback is now called on ppc32 as well,
approx. in the same order as ppc64 regarding device-tree manipulations.
The init sequences of ppc32 and ppc64 are getting closer, I'll unify
them in a later patch.
For now, you can force udbg to the scc using "sccdbg" or to btext using
"btextdbg" on powermacs. I'll implement a cleaner way of forcing udbg
output to something else than the autodetected OF output device in a
later patch.

This moves the discovery of legacy serial ports to a separate file,
makes it common to ppc32 and ppc64, and reworks it to use the new OF
address translators to get to the ports early. This new version can also
detect some PCI serial cards using legacy chips and will probably match
those discovered port with the default console choice.
Only ppc64 gets udbg still yet, unifying udbg isn't finished yet.
It also adds some speed-probing code to udbg so that the default console
can come up at the same speed it was set to by the firmware.

This is the current version of the spu file system, used
for driving SPEs on the Cell Broadband Engine.
This release is almost identical to the version for the
2.6.14 kernel posted earlier, which is available as part
of the Cell BE Linux distribution from
http://www.bsc.es/projects/deepcomputing/linuxoncell/.
The first patch provides all the interfaces for running
spu application, but does not have any support for
debugging SPU tasks or for scheduling. Both these
functionalities are added in the subsequent patches.

spufs.

This patch merges, to some extent, the PPC32 and PPC64 kexec implementations.
We adopt the PPC32 approach of having ppc_md callbacks for the kexec functions.
The current PPC64 implementation becomes the "default" implementation for PPC64
which platforms can select if they need no special treatment.
I've added these default callbacks to pseries/maple/cell/powermac, this means
iSeries no longer supports kexec - but it never worked anyway.
I've renamed PPC32's machine_kexec_simple to default_machine_kexec, inline with
PPC64. Judging by the comments it might be better named machine_kexec_non_of,
or something, but at the moment it's the only implementation for PPC32 so it's
the "default".
Kexec requires machine_shutdown(), which is in machine_kexec.c on PPC32, but we
already have in setup-common.c on powerpc. All this does is call
ppc_md.nvram_sync, which only powermac implements, so instead make
machine_shutdown a ppc_md member and have it call core99_nvram_sync directly
on powermac.
I've also stuck relocate_kernel.S into misc_32.S for powerpc.
Built for ARCH=ppc, and 32 & 64 bit ARCH=powerpc, with KEXEC=y/n. Booted on
P5 LPAR and successfully kexec'ed.
Should apply on top of 493f25ef40.

ppc32 kernel, when built with CONFIG_SMP and booted on a single CPU
machine, will not properly set smp_tb_synchronized, thus causing
gettimeofday() to not use the HW timebase and to be limited to jiffy
resolution. This, among others, causes unacceptable pauses when launching
X.org.

I recently discovered a bug on PPC which causes the floating point
registers to get corrupted when CONFIG_PREEMPT=y.
The problem occurred while running a multi threaded Java application that
does floating point. The problem could be reproduced in anywhere from 2 to
6 hours. With the patch I have included below it ran for over a week
without failure.

This patch merges align.c, the result isn't quite what was in ppc64 nor
what was in ppc32 :) It should implement all the functionalities of both
though. Kumar, since you played with that in the past, I suppose you
have some test cases for verifying that it works properly before I dig
out the 601 machine ? :)
Since it's likely that I won't be able to test all scenario, code
inspection is much welcome.

The merge of machine types broke boot with yaboot & ARCH=ppc due to the
old code still retreiving the old-syle machine type passed in by yaboot.
This patch fixes it by translating those old numbers. Since that whole
mecanism is deprecated, this is a temporary fix until ARCH=ppc uses the
new prom_init that the merged architecture now uses for both ppc32 and
ppc64 (after 2.6.15)

This patch merges platform codes. systemcfg->platform is no longer used,
systemcfg use in general is deprecated as much as possible (and renamed
_systemcfg before it gets completely moved elsewhere in a future patch),
_machine is now used on ppc64 along as ppc32. Platform codes aren't gone
yet but we are getting a step closer. A bunch of asm code in head[_64].S
is also turned into C code.

The ppc32 and ppc64 versions of cacheflush.h were almost identical.
The two versions of cache.h are fairly similar, except for a bunch of
register definitions in the ppc32 version which probably belong better
elsewhere. This patch, therefore, merges both headers. Notable
points:
- there are several functions in cacheflush.h which exist only
on ppc32 or only on ppc64. These are handled by #ifdef for now, but
these should probably be consolidated, along with the actual code
behind them later.
- Confusingly, both ppc32 and ppc64 have a
flush_dcache_range(), but they're subtly different: it uses dcbf on
ppc32 and dcbst on ppc64, ppc64 has a flush_inval_dcache_range() which
uses dcbf. These too should be merged and consolidated later.
- Also flush_dcache_range() was defined in cacheflush.h on
ppc64, and in cache.h on ppc32. In the merged version it's in
cacheflush.h
- On ppc32 flush_icache_range() is a normal function from
misc.S. On ppc64, it was wrapper, testing a feature bit before
calling __flush_icache_range() which does the actual flush. This
patch takes the ppc64 approach, which amounts to no change on ppc32,
since CPU_FTR_COHERENT_ICACHE will never be set there, but does mean
renaming flush_icache_range() to __flush_icache_range() in
arch/ppc/kernel/misc.S and arch/powerpc/kernel/misc_32.S
- The PReP register info from asm-ppc/cache.h has moved to
arch/ppc/platforms/prep_setup.c
- The 8xx register info from asm-ppc/cache.h has moved to a
new asm-powerpc/reg_8xx.h, included from reg.h
- flush_dcache_all() was defined on ppc32 (only), but was
never called (although it was exported). Thus this patch removes it
from cacheflush.h and from ARCH=powerpc (misc_32.S) entirely. It's
left in ARCH=ppc for now, with the prototype moved to ppc_ksyms.c.
Built for Walnut (ARCH=ppc), 32-bit multiplatform (pmac, CHRP and PReP
ARCH=ppc, pmac and CHRP ARCH=powerpc). Built and booted on POWER5
LPAR (ARCH=powerpc and ARCH=ppc64).

Having already merged the ppc and ppc64 versions of signal.c, this
patch finishes the job by merging signal.h. The two versions were
almost identical already. Notable changes:
- We use BITS_PER_LONG to correctly size sigset_t
- Remove some uneeded #includes and struct forward
declarations. This does mean adding an include to signal_32.c which
relied on the indirect inclusion of sigcontext.h
- As the ppc64 version, the merged signal.h has prototypes for
do_signal() and do_signal32(). Thus remove extra prototypes from
ppc_ksyms.c which had them directly.
Built and booted on POWER5 LPAR (ARCH=ppc64 and ARCH=powerpc). Built
for 32-bit powermac (ARCH=ppc and ARCH=powerpc) and Walnut (ARCH=ppc).

Make some changes to the NEED_RESCHED and POLLING_NRFLAG to reduce
confusion, and make their semantics rigid. Improves efficiency of
resched_task and some cpu_idle routines.
* In resched_task:
- TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the task's runqueue lock held,
and as we hold it during resched_task, then there is no need for an
atomic test and set there. The only other time this should be set is
when the task's quantum expires, in the timer interrupt - this is
protected against because the rq lock is irq-safe.
- If TIF_NEED_RESCHED is set, then we don't need to do anything. It
won't get unset until the task get's schedule()d off.
- If we are running on the same CPU as the task we resched, then set
TIF_NEED_RESCHED and no further action is required.
- If we are running on another CPU, and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG is *not* set
after TIF_NEED_RESCHED has been set, then we need to send an IPI.
Using these rules, we are able to remove the test and set operation in
resched_task, and make clear the previously vague semantics of
POLLING_NRFLAG.
* In idle routines:
- Enter cpu_idle with preempt disabled. When the need_resched() condition
becomes true, explicitly call schedule(). This makes things a bit clearer
(IMO), but haven't updated all architectures yet.
- Many do a test and clear of TIF_NEED_RESCHED for some reason. According
to the resched_task rules, this isn't needed (and actually breaks the
assumption that TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the runqueue lock
held). So remove that. Generally one less locked memory op when switching
to the idle thread.
- Many idle routines clear TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG, and only set it in the inner
most polling idle loops. The above resched_task semantics allow it to be
set until before the last time need_resched() is checked before going into
a halt requiring interrupt wakeup.
Many idle routines simply never enter such a halt, and so POLLING_NRFLAG
can be always left set, completely eliminating resched IPIs when rescheduling
the idle task.
POLLING_NRFLAG width can be increased, to reduce the chance of resched IPIs.

Run idle threads with preempt disabled.
Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()).
How did it ever work before?
Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted.
We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking
need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined.
After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and
into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing
previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead.
By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is
fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust.

The PowerPC 440SPe supports up to 16 GB of RAM, and therefore its IO registers
are at 0x4_xxxx_xxxx instead of being at 0x1_xxxx_xxxx like most other PPC 440
chips. To allow for this, this patch moves the definition of the ERPN used
for mapping UART0 from being hard-coded in the head_44x.S assembly code to
being defined in ibm44x.h.

This adds exception table entries for I/O instructions on and
changes MachineCheckException() slightly to cover 8xx specifics (on
8xx the MCE can be generated while executing the IO access instruction
itself, which is not the case on PowerMac's, as the comment on traps.c
details).

Merge include/asm-ppc/kexec.h and include/asm-ppc64/kexec.h.
The only thing that's really changed is that we now allocate crash_notes
properly on PPC32. It's address is exported via sysfs, so it's not correct
for it to be a pointer.
I've also removed some of the "we don't use this" comments, because they're
wrong (or perhaps were referring only to arch code).

Here's a revised version. This re-introduces the set_bits() function
from ppc64, which I removed because I thought it was unused (it exists
on no other arch). In fact it is used in the powermac interrupt code
(but not on pSeries).
- We use LARXL/STCXL macros to generate the right (32 or 64 bit)
instructions, similar to LDL/STL from ppc_asm.h, used in fpu.S
- ppc32 previously used a full "sync" barrier at the end of
test_and_*_bit(), whereas ppc64 used an "isync". The merged version
uses "isync", since I believe that's sufficient.
- The ppc64 versions of then minix_*() bitmap functions have changed
semantics. Previously on ppc64, these functions were big-endian
(that is bit 0 was the LSB in the first 64-bit, big-endian word).
On ppc32 (and x86, for that matter, they were little-endian. As far
as I can tell, the big-endian usage was simply wrong - I guess
no-one ever tried to use minixfs on ppc64.
- On ppc32 find_next_bit() and find_next_zero_bit() are no longer
inline (they were already out-of-line on ppc64).
- For ppc64, sched_find_first_bit() has moved from mmu_context.h to
the merged bitops. What it was doing in mmu_context.h in the first
place, I have no idea.
- The fls() function is now implemented using the cntlzw instruction
on ppc64, instead of generic_fls(), as it already was on ppc32.
- For ARCH=ppc, this patch requires adding arch/powerpc/lib to the
arch/ppc/Makefile. This in turn requires some changes to
arch/powerpc/lib/Makefile which didn't correctly handle ARCH=ppc.
