I couldn't find where the itimer was getting started for slave CPUs.
CPU 0 (master) itimer was started in time_init() (arch/parisc/kernel/time.c).
start_cpu_itimer() code was striped from time_init().
Slaves now start their itimer in smp_cpu_init().
This is a first step towards making gettimeoffset() work for SMP.
Next step will be to determine the CR16 (cycle counter)
offsets for each CPU relative to the master (CPU 0).

This patch fixes the pa8800 at a gross level (there are still other
subtle incoherency issues which can still cause crashes and HPMCs).
What it does is try to force eject inequivalent aliases before they
become visible to the L2 cache (which is where we get the incoherence
problems).
A new function (parisc_requires_coherency) is introduced in
asm/processor.h to identify the pa8x00 processors (8800 and 8900)
which have the issue.

It seems PA7200 processors also suppress traps on loads to
%r0. This means we can prefetch for read on these cpus. Of course,
we can't support prefetch for write, since that requires
LOAD DOUBLEWORD which was added with PA2.0

These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when
communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required
because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS
for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace
automatically where the arch supports it.
Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode
number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and
failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and
so overlaps occur.
This patch:
Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit
inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace.
The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where
available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode
number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then
error EOVERFLOW will be issued.
Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode
number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a
directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented.
Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit
system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that
there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to.
Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a
32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the
same reasons.
It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc
uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions
exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter
unrepresentable inode numbers anyway.

Some architectures provide an execve function that does not set errno, but
instead returns the result code directly. Rename these to kernel_execve to
get the right semantics there. Moreover, there is no reasone for any of these
architectures to still provide __KERNEL_SYSCALLS__ or _syscallN macros, so
remove these right away.

This patch adds a nsproxy structure to the task struct. Later patches will
move the fs namespace pointer into this structure, and introduce a new utsname
namespace into the nsproxy.
The vserver and openvz functionality, then, would be implemented in large part
by virtualizing/isolating more and more resources into namespaces, each
contained in the nsproxy.

With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies.
So we can kill wall_jiffies completely.
This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior
except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a
condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I
suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of
kill the whole "if" block.

Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390
timer interrupt handler with this change.
Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but
callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks
get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy
pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky.
This cleanup make a barrier added by
5aee405c66 needless. So this patch removes
it.
As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now
wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really
remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch)

This appears to be the only usage of is_init in the kernel besides the
usage in sched.h. On ia64 the same function is called in_init. So to
remove the conflict and make the kernel more consistent rename is_init
is_core is_local and is_local_section to in_init in_core in_local and
in_local_section respectively.

There are many places where we need to determine the node of a zone.
Currently we use a difficult to read sequence of pointer dereferencing.
Put that into an inline function and use throughout VM. Maybe we can find
a way to optimize the lookup in the future.

The latest toolchains can produce a new ELF section in DSOs and
dynamically-linked executables. The new section ".gnu.hash" replaces
".hash", and allows for more efficient runtime symbol lookups by the
dynamic linker. The new ld option --hash-style={sysv|gnu|both} controls
whether to produce the old ".hash", the new ".gnu.hash", or both. In some
new systems such as Fedora Core 6, gcc by default passes --hash-style=gnu
to the linker, so that a standard invocation of "gcc -shared" results in
producing a DSO with only ".gnu.hash". The new ".gnu.hash" sections need
to be dealt with the same way as ".hash" sections in all respects; only the
dynamic linker cares about their contents. To work with older dynamic
linkers (i.e. preexisting releases of glibc), a binary must have the old
".hash" section. The --hash-style=both option produces binaries that a new
dynamic linker can use more efficiently, but an old dynamic linker can
still handle.
The new section runs afoul of the custom linker scripts used to build vDSO
images for the kernel. On ia64, the failure mode for this is a boot-time
panic because the vDSO's PT_IA_64_UNWIND segment winds up ill-formed.
This patch addresses the problem in two ways.
First, it mentions ".gnu.hash" in all the linker scripts alongside ".hash".
This produces correct vDSO images with --hash-style=sysv (or old tools),
with --hash-style=gnu, or with --hash-style=both.
Second, it passes the --hash-style=sysv option when building the vDSO
images, so that ".gnu.hash" is not actually produced. This is the most
conservative choice for compatibility with any old userland. There is some
concern that some ancient glibc builds (though not any known old production
system) might choke on --hash-style=both binaries. The optimizations
provided by the new style of hash section do not really matter for a DSO
with a tiny number of symbols, as the vDSO has. If someone wants to use
=gnu or =both for their vDSO builds and worry less about that
compatibility, just change the option and the linker script changes will
make any choice work fine.

MAX_NR_CONSOLES, fg_console, want_console and last_console are more of a
function of the VT layer than the TTY one. Moving these to vt.h and vt_kern.h
allows all of the framebuffer and VT console drivers to remove their
dependency on tty.h.

This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding
various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing
functionality.
While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the
generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many
smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is
the new 'irq chip' abstraction.
The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller
driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a
straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow"
(level/edge/etc.) type of details.
This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq
architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details.
The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and
converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design.
As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers
(master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well.
The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code
and more consolidation between architectures.
We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ
layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset.
This patch:
rename desc->handler to desc->chip.
Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having
both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a
large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it
truly is.
I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a
desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke
frequently.
So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically
via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel.
This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the
remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up
without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier.

With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now
considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI.
I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before
memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add.
In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(),
which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be
onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be
there.
This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu
until node is onlined.
This removes node arguments from register_cpu().
Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of
struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug
patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not
necessary now.
This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It
is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this.
Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard
to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it.
Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed
by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch.

Apparently gettimeoffset can return small negative values (usually in
the 100us range). If xtime.tv_nsec is accidentally less than this,
though (a fortunately unlikely event) it triggers the loop forever.
I've added a test and correct adjustment for this case. It has a
warning printk in there which I'd like to leave for the time being
just in case this problem implicates some other part of the kernel.

The new problem, which has been affecting many more modules was that
our new ioremap really takes chunks out of our vmalloc space. The net
result being that any two kernel vmalloc's now have to slot into the
chunked up space. So the vmallocs for a modules init and core sectons
are no longer necessarily contiguous. Unfortunately, the module loader
thinks that any internal symbol references should be satisfiable using the
jump instruction, which isn't true if the symbol is referenced from init
to core and vmalloc placed them a long way apart.
Fix this by introducing a new stub type for intra module inter sectional
jumps and using it.

We were assigned an OS_ID of 0x0006. Consistently use OS_ID_LINUX
instead of using the magic number. Also update the OS_ID_ defines in
asm/pdc.h to reflect this.

Check PDC_CACHE to see if spaceid hashing is turned on, and fail to
boot if that is the case.
However, some old machines do not implement the PDC_CACHE_RET_SPID
firmware call, so continue to boot if the call fails because of
PDC_BAD_OPTION (but fail in all other error returns).

pdc_stable v0.30:
This patch introduces 3 more files to the /sys/firmware/stable tree:
- diagnostic, which contains a cryptic hex string
- osdep1, a 16 bytes os-dependent storage area always available
- osdep2, another os-dependent storage area which existence/size depends
on hversion.
This patch also adds code to setup the "Linux" signature in stable
storage. That is to say that starting with this patch, the kernel will
now sign its OSID (0x0006, thx LaMont) in Stable Storage upon boot,
whether pdc_stable is enabled or not.

This patch removes a limitation of the original code, so that CHASSIS
codes can be sent to all machines. On machines with a LCD panel, this
code displays "INI" during bootup, "RUN" when the system is booted and
running, "FLT" when a panic occurs, etc.
This part of the code can be enabled/disabled through CONFIG_PDC_CHASSIS
This patch also adds minimalistic support for Chassis warnings, through
a proc entry '/proc/chassis', which will reflect the warnings status (PSU
or fans failure when they happen, NVRAM battery level and temperature
thresholds overflows).
This part of the code can be enabled/disabled through CONFIG_PDC_CHASSIS_WARN

Joel Soete noticed correctly that the fixup's clobbers must be listed
as the ASM clobbers. FIXUP_BRANCH in unaligned.c has a new macro which
lists all the clobbers in the fixup, we use this throughout the file
to simplify the process of listing clobbers in the future.
A missing "r1" clobber is added to our uaccess.h for the 64-bit
__put_kernel_asm. Interestingly this is a pretty serious bug since gcc
generates pretty good use of r1 as a temporary and the uses of
__put_kernel_asm are varied and dangerous if r1 is scratched during
an invalid write.

- When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag
SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(),
the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is
the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications
V3.
- Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag
SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal
delivery.
These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery.

Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock
pointer.
This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of
sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does
require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits
the root in the vfsmount to be used instead.
linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build
successfully.
Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems.

While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't
being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a
changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more
architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it."
I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines
__HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it
themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c.

Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for
each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5
NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy.
SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has
been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the
future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's
number.
This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi
nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary.
On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2
config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I
changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It
would be simpler.

The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no
protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the
chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread:

We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage
classes:
"Blocking" chains are always called from a process context
and the callout routines are allowed to sleep;
"Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and
the callout routines are not allowed to sleep.
We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore
this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking
notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is
really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are
used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for
registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are
explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in
kernel/sys.c.
With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain
links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by
entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no
guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The
idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and
blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to
handle these things in their own way.)
There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For
atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in
a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a
callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister
entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code
had to be changed to avoid it.)
Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use
spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost
entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much
less frequent that calling a chain.

of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.

It's possible that some of these classifications are wrong. If they are,

gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking
used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems.
(However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be
atomic.)

When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch
the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this
is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu().
This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very
few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded
test to use the preferred helper macros.

set_page_count usage outside mm/ is limited to setting the refcount to 1.
Remove set_page_count from outside mm/, and replace those users with
init_page_count() and set_page_refcounted().
This allows more debug checking, and tighter control on how code is allowed
to play around with page->_count.

CONFIG_TIME_LOW_RES is a temporary way for architectures to signal that
they simply return xtime in do_gettimeoffset(). In this corner-case we
want to round up by resolution when starting a relative timer, to avoid
short timeouts. This will go away with the GTOD framework.

parisc defines ARCH_WANT_STAT64, so we want to use fstatat64. It does not
appear that it needs to be ENTRY_COMP, because struct stat64 is the same
on both 32-bit and 64-bit (unlike on other platforms which did define a

Swap out pselect6/ppoll for ni_syscall for now. We also have to switch

Userspace can alter the string after the kernel has run strlen_user().
Also: the strlen_user() return value includes the \0, so fix that.
Also: handle EFAULT from strlen_user().
It's unlikely anyone is using this code. Very, very unlikely. If I
remember correctly, CONFIG_HPUX turns this code on, but one would actually
need CONFIG_BINFMT_SOM to load a binary that could cause a problem, and
BINFMT_SOM has had an #error in it for quite some time.

parisc was previously displaying both the mm/Kconfig memory model
menu, and its own prompt. Remove prompt and have CONFIG_64BIT toggle
between DISCONTIGMEM and FLATMEM. Also remove the EXPERIMENTAL from
discontigmem support... It's been running fine for months (years?)
now.

Add enough arch-specific compat signals code to enable parisc64
to compile and boot out of the mainline tree. There are likely still
many dragons here, but this is a start to squashing the last
big difference between the mainline tree and the parisc-linux tree.
The remaining bugs can be squashed as they come up.

Use CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL to catch kernel code which tries to access
__init data after it is freed. When CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL is not set

Define a chassis_power_off routine that machines which have a way
to turn off the power supply can hook into. Formerly they were
using pm_power_off, which is now being used by generic code. Make
lasi.c use chassis_power_off instead of pm_power_off.
Note, all machines need to call machine_power_off so that the
switch can power off the machine, though halt -p may not necessarily
be able to work properly on the machine.

Remove a bunch of obsolete code from process.c, these routines were
likely imported from the i386 version of process.c when the port
started. The routines are only used in floppy.c, which I seriously
doubt will ever work on parisc, due to architectural assumptions.

use the F_EXTEND() macro defined in asm/io.h, which is the preferred
way of extending mmio space addresses for either 32 or 64 bit machines.

Enabling Lasi 82596, Harmony, Mux console, CCIO, HPPB, etc., means

max_low_pfn was not being set in arch/parisc/mm/init.c, causing severe
problems whenever anything tried to use BLK_BOUNCE_HIGH. Set it to
max_pfn like other similar architectures do.

Make knapps work with its 64MB gfx card. I probably just broke another

Fixup ioremap a bit. It seems to work on 32-bit kernels, but fails
miserably on the first ioremapped access on 64-bit kernels. Also, having
STI enabled causes it to fail. Probably because we're passing an ioremapped
region to a real-mode STI call...

Now that all these entries in the arch ioctl32.c files are gone [1], we can
build fs/compat_ioctl.c as a normal object and kill tons of cruft. We need a
special do_ioctl32_pointer handler for s390 so the compat_ptr call is done.
This is not needed but harmless on all other architectures. Also remove some
superflous includes in fs/compat_ioctl.c
Tested on ppc64.
[1] parisc still had it's PPP handler left, which is not fully correct
for ppp and besides that ppp uses the generic SIOCPRIV ioctl so it'd
kick in for all netdevice users. We can introduce a proper handler
in one of the next patch series by adding a compat_ioctl method to
struct net_device but for now let's just kill it - parisc doesn't
compile in mainline anyway and I don't want this to block this
patchset.

This patch implements generic handling of RTC_IRQP_READ32, RTC_IRQP_SET32,
RTC_EPOCH_READ32 and RTC_EPOCH_SET32 in fs/compat_ioctl.c. It's based on the
x86_64 code which needed a little massaging to be endian-clean.
parisc used COMPAT_IOCTL or generic w_long handlers for these whichce is wrong
and can't work because the ioctls encode sizeof(unsigned long) in their ioctl
number. parisc also duplicated COMPAT_IOCTL entries for other rtc ioctls
which I remove in this patch, too.

Return PDC_OK when device registration fails so that we enumerate all

This really only adds them for the machines I can check SMP on, which
is CPU interrupts and IOSAPIC (so not any of the GSC based machines).
With this patch, irqbalanced can be used to maintain irq balancing.
Unfortunately, irqbalanced is a bit x86 centric, so it doesn't do an
incredibly good job, but it does work.

Since irq.c uses smp_send_all_nop, we must define it for UP builds
as well. Make it a static inline so it gets optimized away. This forces

Fix our interrupts not to use smp_call_function
On K and D class smp, the generic code calls this under an irq
spinlock, which causes the WARN_ON() message in smp_call_function()
(and is also illegal because it could deadlock).
The fix is to use a new scheme based on the IPI_NOP.

Disable nesting of interrupts - still has holes
The offending sequence starts out like this:
1) take external interrupt
2) set_eiem() to only allow TIMER_IRQ; local interrupts still disabled
3) read the EIRR to get a "list" of pending interrupts
4) clear EIRR of pending interrupts we intend to handle
5) call __do_IRQ() to handle IRQ.
6) handle_IRQ_event() enables local interrupts (I-Bit)
7) take a timer interrupt
8) read EIRR to get a new list of pending interrupts
9) clear EIRR of pending interrupts we just read
10) handle pending interrupts found in (8)
11) set_eiem(cpu_eiem) and return
[ TROUBLE! all enabled CPU IRQs are unmasked. }
12) handle remaining interrupts pending from (3)
e.g. call __do_IRQ() -> handle_IRQ_event()..etc
[ TROUBLE! call to handle_IRQ_event() can now enable *any* IRQ. }
13) set_eiem(cpu_eiem) and return
The problem is we now get into ugly race conditions with Timer and IPI
interrupts at this point. I'm not exactly sure what happens when
things go wrong (perhaps nest calls to IPI or timer interrupt?).
But I'm certain it's not good.
This sequence will break sooner if (10) would accidentally leave
interrupts enabled.
I'm pretty sure the right answer is now to make cpu_eiem
a per CPU variable since all external interrupts on parisc
are per CPU. This means we will NOT need to send an IPI to
every CPU in the system when enabling or disabling an IRQ
since only one CPU needs to change it's EIEM.

Fix a longstanding smp bug
The problem is that both the timer and ipi interrupts are being called
with interrupts enabled, which isn't what anyone is expecting.
The IPI issue has just started to show up by causing a BUG_ON in the
slab debugging code. The timer issue never shows up because there's an
eiem work around in our irq.c
The fix is to label both these as SA_INTERRUPT which causes the generic
irq code not to enable interrupts.
I also suspect the smp_call_function timeouts we're seeing might be
connected with the fact that we disable IPIs when handling any other
type of interrupt. I've put a WARN_ON in the code for executing
smp_call_function() with IPIs disabled.

Make some changes to the NEED_RESCHED and POLLING_NRFLAG to reduce
confusion, and make their semantics rigid. Improves efficiency of
resched_task and some cpu_idle routines.
* In resched_task:
- TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the task's runqueue lock held,
and as we hold it during resched_task, then there is no need for an
atomic test and set there. The only other time this should be set is
when the task's quantum expires, in the timer interrupt - this is
protected against because the rq lock is irq-safe.
- If TIF_NEED_RESCHED is set, then we don't need to do anything. It
won't get unset until the task get's schedule()d off.
- If we are running on the same CPU as the task we resched, then set
TIF_NEED_RESCHED and no further action is required.
- If we are running on another CPU, and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG is *not* set
after TIF_NEED_RESCHED has been set, then we need to send an IPI.
Using these rules, we are able to remove the test and set operation in
resched_task, and make clear the previously vague semantics of
POLLING_NRFLAG.
* In idle routines:
- Enter cpu_idle with preempt disabled. When the need_resched() condition
becomes true, explicitly call schedule(). This makes things a bit clearer
(IMO), but haven't updated all architectures yet.
- Many do a test and clear of TIF_NEED_RESCHED for some reason. According
to the resched_task rules, this isn't needed (and actually breaks the
assumption that TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the runqueue lock
held). So remove that. Generally one less locked memory op when switching
to the idle thread.
- Many idle routines clear TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG, and only set it in the inner
most polling idle loops. The above resched_task semantics allow it to be
set until before the last time need_resched() is checked before going into
a halt requiring interrupt wakeup.
Many idle routines simply never enter such a halt, and so POLLING_NRFLAG
can be always left set, completely eliminating resched IPIs when rescheduling
the idle task.
POLLING_NRFLAG width can be increased, to reduce the chance of resched IPIs.

Run idle threads with preempt disabled.
Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()).
How did it ever work before?
Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted.
We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking
need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined.
After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and
into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing
previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead.
By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is
fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust.

This patch removes almost all inclusions of linux/version.h. The 3
#defines are unused in most of the touched files.
A few drivers use the simple KERNEL_VERSION(a,b,c) macro, which is
unfortunatly in linux/version.h.
There are also lots of #ifdef for long obsolete kernels, this was not
touched. In a few places, the linux/version.h include was move to where
the LINUX_VERSION_CODE was used.

The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch
statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures.
This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as
arch_ptrace.
Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them.
They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a
sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call.
For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but
SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree.

Make the pid argument a long as on every other arcihtecture. Despite pid_t
beeing a 32bit type even on 64bit parisc this is not an ABI change due to
the parisc calling conventions. And even if it did it wouldn't matter too
much because 64bit userspace on parisc is in an embrionic stage.

TIOCSTART and TIOCSTOP are defined in asm/ioctls.h and asm/termios.h by
various architectures but not actually implemented anywhere but in the IRIX
compatibility layer, so remove their COMPATIBLE_IOCTL from parisc, ppc64
and sparc64.
Move the TIOCSLTC COMPATIBLE_IOCTL to common code, guided by an ifdef to
only show up on architectures that support it (same as the code handling it
in tty_ioctl.c), aswell as it's brother TIOCGLTC that wasn't handled so
far.

pgdat->node_size_lock is basically only neeeded in one place in the normal
code: show_mem(), which is the arch-specific sysrq-m printing function.
Strictly speaking, the architectures not doing memory hotplug do no need this
locking in show_mem(). However, they are all included for completeness. This
should also make any future consolidation of all of the implementations a
little more straightforward.
This lock is also held in the sparsemem code during a memory removal, as
sections are invalidated. This is the place there pfn_valid() is made false
for a memory area that's being removed. The lock is only required when doing
pfn_valid() operations on memory which the user does not already have a
reference on the page, such as in show_mem().

There's a worrying function translation_exists in parisc cacheflush.h,
unaffected by split ptlock since flush_dcache_page is using it on some other
mm, without any relevant lock. Oh well, make it a slightly more robust by
factoring the pfn check within it. And it looked liable to confuse a
camouflaged swap or file entry with a good pte: fix that too.

First step in pushing down the page_table_lock. init_mm.page_table_lock has
been used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize
kernel address space allocation (that's usually vmlist_lock), but because
pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it.
Reverse that: don't lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the
architectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take
and drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already
did. Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc's map_vm_area.
Some temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle
user mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock
differently according to whether or not it's init_mm.
If sources get muddled, there's a danger that an arch source taking
init_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or
neither take it). So break the rules and make another change, which should
break the build for such a mismatch: remove the redundant mm arg from
pte_alloc_kernel (ppc64 scrapped its distinct ioremap_mm in 2.6.13).
Exceptions: arm26 used pte_alloc_kernel on user mm, now pte_alloc_map; ia64
used pte_alloc_map on init_mm, now pte_alloc_kernel; parisc had bad args to
pmd_alloc and pte_alloc_kernel in unused USE_HPPA_IOREMAP code; ppc64
map_io_page forgot to unlock on failure; ppc mmu_mapin_ram and ppc64 im_free
took page_table_lock for no good reason.

fixup.S needs to specify .level and use correct LDREG macro.
New binutils has a bug where it doesn't "promote" from PA1.0 to PA1.1
correctly when using ",s" completer.
remove use of __LP64__ in assembly.h and add some white space.

replace use of "0" with "%r0" since PA 1.1 I/D flush ops only take a
general register and not an immediate value for the index field.
This just forces the code to always be PA 1.1 "clean".

2.6.12-rc2-pa3 fix copy_user_page_asm to NOT access past end of page.

Lamont confirmed that instructions following a conditional
branch are *alway* executed regardless if the branch is taken or not.
Unless they are nullified (which was missing in this case).
He also noted:
Conditional branches nullify on forward taken branch, and on
non-taken backward branch. Note that .+4 is a backwards branch.
This makes alot more sense than the giberish in the PA20 arch book.
Compiles and boots on both 64-bit (a500) and 32-bit (j6k).

With these in we were calling do_softirq twice; plus the calls in
entry.S took no account of nesting.
