Fix the repetition of the NET symbol. It was once in UML specific options and
once in networking. I removed the first occurrence, as it makes more sense to
me to keep it only in networking.
It also removes a mostly empty file which is not used anymore and some
unused variables.

UML still needed some work in order to allow CFLAGS to be passed in from the
command line.
USER_CFLAGS is produced from KBUILD_CFLAGS in part by removing all the -I
switches. This is so that kernel headers don't accidentally get pulled into
libc files. However, a common use of command-line CFLAGS would be to add -I
switches to the build. This patch specifically adds any command-line -I flags
back to USER_CFLAGS.
I also corrected the spelling of LFLAGS to LDFLAGS.

Give the stubs a VMA. This allows the removal of a truly nasty kludge to make
sure that mm->nr_ptes was correct in exit_mmap. The underlying problem was
always that the stubs, which have ptes, and thus allocated a page table,
weren't covered by a VMA.
This patch fixes that by using install_special_mapping in arch_dup_mmap and
activate_context to create the VMA. The stubs have to be moved, since
shift_arg_pages seems to assume that the stack is the only VMA present at that
point during exec, and uses vma_adjust to fiddle its VMA. However, that
extends the stub VMA by the amount removed from the stack VMA.
To avoid this problem, the stubs were moved to a different fixed location at
the start of the address space.
The init_stub_pte calls were moved from init_new_context to arch_dup_mmap
because I was occasionally seeing arch_dup_mmap not being called, causing
exit_mmap to die. Rather than figure out what was really happening, I decided
it was cleaner to just move the calls so that there's no doubt that both the
pte and VMA creation happen, no matter what. arch_exit_mmap is used to clear
the stub ptes at exit time.
The STUB_* constants in as-layout.h no longer depend on UM_TASK_SIZE, that
that definition is removed, along with the comments complaining about gcc.
Because the stubs are no longer at the top of the address space, some care is
needed while flushing TLBs. update_pte_range checks for addresses in the stub
range and skips them. flush_thread now issues two unmaps, one for the range
before STUB_START and one for the range after STUB_END.

Clean up the calculation and use of the usable address space size on the host.
task_size is gone, replaced with TASK_SIZE, which is calculated from
CONFIG_TOP_ADDR. get_kmem_end and set_task_sizes_skas are also gone.
host_task_size, which refers to the entire address space usable by the UML
kernel and which may be larger than the address space usable by a UML process,
since that has to end on a pgdir boundary, is replaced by CONFIG_TOP_ADDR.
STACK_TOP is now TASK_SIZE minus the two stub pages.

UML was panicing in the case of failures of libc calls which shouldn't happen.
This is an overreaction since a failure from libc doesn't normally mean that
kernel data structures are in an unknown state. Instead, the current process
should just be killed if there is no way to recover.
The case that prompted this was a failure of PTRACE_SETREGS restoring the same
state that was read by PTRACE_GETREGS. It appears that when a process tries
to load a bogus value into a segment register, it segfaults (as expected) and
the value is actually loaded and is seen by PTRACE_GETREGS (not expected).
This case is fixed by forcing a fatal SIGSEGV on the process so that it
immediately dies. fatal_sigsegv was added for this purpose. It was declared
as noreturn, so in order to pursuade gcc that it actually does not return, I
added a call to os_dump_core (and declared it noreturn) so that I get a core
file if somehow the process survives.
All other calls in arch/um/os-Linux/skas/process.c got the same treatment,
with failures causing the process to die instead of a kernel panic, with some
exceptions.
userspace_tramp exits with status 1 if anything goes wrong there. That will
cause start_userspace to return an error. copy_context_skas0 and
map_stub_pages also now return errors instead of panicing. Callers of thes
functions were changed to check for errors and do something appropriate.
Usually that's to return an error to their callers.
check_skas3_ptrace_faultinfo just exits since that's too early to do anything
else.
save_registers, restore_registers, and init_registers now return status
instead of panicing on failure, with their callers doing something
appropriate.
There were also duplicate declarations of save_registers and restore_registers
in os.h - these are gone.
I noticed and fixed up some whitespace damage.

Simplify the page fault stub by not masking signals while it is running. This
allows it to signal that it is done by executing an instruction which will
generate a SIGTRAP (int3 on x86) rather than running sigreturn by hand after
queueing a blocked SIGUSR1.
userspace_tramp now no longer puts anything in the SIGSEGV sa_mask, but it
does add SA_NODEFER to sa_flags so that SIGSEGV is still enabled after the
signal handler fails to run sigreturn.
SIGWINCH is just blocked so that we don't have to deal with it and the signal
masks used by wait_stub_done are updated to reflect the smaller number of
signals that it has to worry about.

Get the sizes of various pieces of data right when using three-level
page tables. pgd and pmd entries remain at 32 bits in a 32-bit
compilation because page tables will remain in low memory. So,
PGDIR_SHIFT, the PTRS_PER_* values, set_pud, set_pmd are conditional
on 64BIT.
More use of phys_t is made when there are physical memory addresses
floating around.
ObCheckpatchViolationJustification - the new typedef is an alternate
definition of pmd_t, which I can't really live without.

Tidy current-related stuff. There was a comment in current.h saying
that current_thread was obsolete, so this patch turns all instances of
current_thread into current_thread_info(). There's some simplifying

Untangle UML headers somewhat and add some includes where they were
needed explicitly, but gotten accidentally via some other header.
arch/um/include/um_uaccess.h loses asm/fixmap.h because it uses no
fixmap stuff and gains elf.h, because it needs FIXADDR_USER_*, and
archsetjmp.h, because it needs jmp_buf.
pmd_alloc_one is uninlined because it needs mm_struct, and that's
inconvenient to provide in asm-um/pgtable-3level.h.
elf_core_copy_fpregs is also uninlined from elf-i386.h and
elf-x86_64.h, which duplicated the code anyway, to
arch/um/kernel/process.c, so that the reference to current_thread
doesn't pull sched.h or anything related into asm/elf.h.
arch/um/sys-i386/ldt.c, arch/um/kernel/tlb.c and
arch/um/kernel/skas/uaccess.c got sched.h because they dereference
task_structs. Its includes of linux and asm headers got turned from
"" to <>.
arch/um/sys-i386/bug.c gets asm/errno.h because it needs errno
constants.
asm/elf-i386 gets asm/user.h because it needs user_regs_struct.
asm/fixmap.h gets page.h because it needs PAGE_SIZE and PAGE_MASK and
system.h for BUG_ON.
asm/pgtable doesn't need sched.h.
asm/processor-generic.h defined mm_segment_t, but didn't use it. So,
that definition is moved to uaccess.h, which defines a bunch of
mm_segment_t-related stuff. thread_info.h uses mm_segment_t, and
includes uaccess.h, which causes a recursion. So, the definition is
placed above the include of thread_info. in uaccess.h. thread_info.h
also gets page.h because it needs PAGE_SIZE.
ObCheckpatchViolationJustification - I'm not adding a typedef; I'm
moving mm_segment_t from one place to another.

This patchset makes UML build and run with three-level page tables on
32-bit hosts. This is an uncommon use case, but the code here needed
fixing and cleaning up, so 32-bit three-level pages tables were tested
to make sure the changes are good.
Patch 1 - code movement
Patch 2 - header untangling
Patch 3 - style fixups in files affected so far
Patch 4 - clean up use of current.h
Patch 5 - fix sizes of types that are different between 2 and 3-level
page tables - three-level page table support should build at
this point
Patch 6 - tidy (i.e. eliminate much of) the code that figures out how
big the address space is
Patch 7 - change um_virt_to_phys into virt_to_pte, clean its
interface, and clean its (so far) one caller
Patch 8 - the stub pages are covered with a VMA, allowing some nasty
code to be thrown out - three-level page tables now work
This patch:
um_virt_to_phys only has one user, so it can be moved to the same file
and made static. Its declarations in pgtable.h and ksyms.c are also
gone.
current_cmd was another apparent user, but it itself isn't used, so it
is deleted.

The previous const-ing patch consted a string which shouldn't have
been, and I didn't notice the gcc warning.
ubd_setup can't take a const char * because its address is assigned to
something which expects a char *arg. Many setups modify the string
they are given, they can't be const.

Tidy kern_util.h. It turns out that most of the function declarations
aren't used, so they can go away. os.h no longer includes
kern_util.h, so files which got it through os.h now need to include it
directly. A number of other files never needed it, so these includes
are deleted.
The structure which was used to pass signal handlers from the kernel
side to the userspace side is gone. Instead, the handlers are
declared here, and used directly from libc code. This allows
arch/um/os-Linux/trap.c to be deleted, with its remnants being moved
to arch/um/os-Linux/skas/trap.c.
arch/um/os-Linux/tty.c had its inclusions changed, and it needed some
style attention, so it got tidied.

Suggested by Geert Uytterhoeven - use const.h to get constants that are usable
in both C and assembly. I can't include it directly since this code can't
include kernel headers. const.h is also for numeric constants that can be
typed by tacking a "UL" or similar on the end. The constants here have to be
typed by casting them.
So, the relevant parts of const.h are copied here and modified in order to
allow the constants to be uncasted in assembly and casted in C.

bugs.c, for both i386 and x86_64, can undergo further cleaning -
The i386 arch_check_bugs only does one thing, so we might as
well inline the cmov checking.
The i386 includes can be trimmed down a bit.
arch_init_thread wasn't used, so it is deleted.
The panics in arch_handle_signal are turned into printks
because the process is about to get segfaulted anyway, so something is
dying no matter what happens here. Also, the return value was always
the same, so it contained no information, so it can be void instead.
The name is changed to arch_examine_signal because it doesn't handle
anything.
The caller of arch_handle_signal, relay_signal, does things in
a different order. The kernel-mode signal check is now first, which
puts everything else together, making things a bit clearer conceptually.

Implement get_wchan - the algorithm is similar to x86. It starts with the
stack pointer of the process in question and looks above that for addresses
that are kernel text. The second one which isn't in the scheduler is the one
that's returned. The first one is ignored because that will be UML's own
context switching routine.

init.h started breaking now for some reason. It turns out that there wasn't a
definition of __used. Fixed this by copying the relevant stuff from
compiler.h in the userspace case, and including compiler.h in the kernel case.

The pgd/pud/pmd/pte page table allocation functions get a mm_struct pointer as
first argument. The free functions do not get the mm_struct argument. This
is 1) asymmetrical and 2) to do mm related page table allocations the mm
argument is needed on the free function as well.

Sometimes when UML is debugged gdb miss breakpoints.
When process traced by gdb do fork, debugger remove breakpoints from
child address space. There is possibility to trace more than one fork,
but this not work with UML, I guess (only guess) there is a deadlock -
gdb waits for UML and UML waits for gdb.
When clone() is called with SIGCHLD and CLONE_VM flags, gdb see this
as PTRACE_EVENT_FORK not as PTRACE_EVENT_CLONE and remove breakpoints
from child and at the same time from traced process, because either
have the same address space.
Maybe it is possible to do fix in gdb, but I'm not sure if there is
easy way to find out if traced and child processes share memory. So I
do fix for UML, it simply do not call clone() with both SIGCHLD and
CLONE_VM flags together. Additionally __WALL flag is used for
waitpid() to assure not miss clone and normal process events.

Recently, Wang Chen submitted a patch
(d30f53aeb3) to move a call to netif_rx(skb)
after a subsequent reference to skb, because netif_rx may call kfree_skb on
its argument. The same problem occurs in some other drivers as well.

Under the conditions that UML uses it, tcgetattr is guaranteed to return
-EINTR when the console is attached to /dev/ptmx, making generic_console_write
hang because it loops, calling tcgetattr until it succeeds. This is a host
bug - see http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=119618990807182&w=2 for the
details.
This patch works around it by blocking SIGIO while the terminal attributes are
being fiddled.

With NO_HZ disabled, the UML idle loop effectively becomes a busy loop, as
it will sleep for no time.
The cause was forgetting to restart the tick after waking up from sleep.
It was disabled before sleeping, and the remaining time used as the
interval to sleep. So, the tick needs to be restarted when nanosleep
finishes.
This is done by introducing after_sleep_interval, which is empty in the
NO_HZ case, but which sets the tick starting in the !NO_HZ case.

The spurious IRQ testing in request_irq is mishandled in um_request_irq, which
sets the incoming file descriptors non-blocking only after request_irq
succeeds. This results in the spurious irq calling read on a blocking
descriptor, and a hang.
Fixed by reversing the O_NONBLOCK setting and the request_irq call.

Stupid bug - we need to compare the return value of recvmsg to the value of
iov_len, not its size. This caused port_helper processes not to be killed on
shutdown on x86_64 because the pids weren't being passed out properly.

One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log.
There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes
so for arch/xxx files.
It took some time to cross-compile it, but hopefully these are all the
printks in arch code.

is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into
is_global_init() and is_container_init().
A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1.
A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace
is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace,
compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is
initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes.

Fix up conflicts in arch/um/sys-{x86_64,i386}/Makefile manually.
In a stock 2.6.22.6 kernel, poweroff a user mode linux guest (2.6.22.6 running
in skas0 mode) will halt the host linux. I think the reason is the kernel
thread abort because of a bug. Then the sys_reboot in process of user mode
linux guest is not trapped by the user mode linux kernel and is executed by
host. I think it is better to make sure all of our children process to quit
when user mode linux kernel abort.

loop is needed to make sure that all of our children are dead before the
kernel exits ]

The calculation of CONFIG_STUB_CODE and CONFIG_STUB_DATA didn't take into
account anything but 3G/1G and 2G/2G, leaving the other vmsplits out in the
cold.
I'd rather not duplicate the four known host vmsplit cases for each of these
symbols. I'd also like to calculate them based on the highest userspace
address.
The Kconfig language seems not to allow calculation of hex constants, so I
moved this to as-layout.h. CONFIG_STUB_CODE, CONFIG_STUB_DATA, and
CONFIG_STUB_START are now gone. In their place are STUB_CODE, STUB_DATA, and
STUB_START in as-layout.h.
i386 and x86_64 seem to differ as to whether an unadorned constant is an int
or a long, so I cast them to unsigned long so they can be printed
consistently. However, they are also used in stub.S, where C types don't work
so well. So, there are ASM_ versions of these constants for use in stub.S. I
also ifdef-ed the non-asm-friendly portion of as-layout.h.
With this in place, most of the rest of this patch is changing CONFIG_STUB_*
to STUB_*, except in stub.S, where they are changed to ASM_STUB_*.
defconfig has the old symbols deleted.
I also print these addresses out in case there is any problem mapping them on
the host.
The two stub.S files had some trailing whitespace, so that is cleaned up here.

Handle memory allocation failures when reading packets.
We have to read something from the host, even if we can't allocate any
memory. If we don't, the host side of the device may fill up and stop
delivering interrupts because no new packets can be queued.
A single sk_buff is allocated whenever an MTU is seen which is larger
than any seen earlier. This is used to read packets if there is a
memory allocation failure.
The large MTU check is done from eth_configure, which is called when a
interface is added to the system.

A bunch of MTU-related cleanups in the network code.
First, there is the addition of the notion of a maximally-sized packet, which
is the MTU plus headers. This is used to size the skb that will receive a
packet. This allows ether_adjust_skb to go away, as it was used to resize the
skb after it was allocated.
Since the skb passed into the low-level read routine is no longer resized, and
possibly reallocated, there, they (and the write routines) don't need to get
an sk_buff **. They just need the sk_buff * now. The callers of
ether_adjust_skb still need to do the skb_put, so that's now inlined.
The MAX_PACKET definitions in most of the drivers are gone.
The set_mtu methods were all the same and did nothing, so they can be
removed.
The ethertap driver had a typo which doubled the size of the packet rather
than adding two bytes to it. It also wasn't defining its setup_size, causing
a zero-byte kmalloc and crash when the invalid pointer returned from kmalloc
was dereferenced.

There are various uses of powers of 1000, plus the odd BILLION constant in the
time code. However, there are perfectly good definitions of *SEC_PER_*SEC in
linux/time.h which can be used instaed.
These are replaced directly in kernel code. Userspace code imports those
constants as UM_*SEC_PER_*SEC and uses these.

Now that ITIMER_REAL is no longer used, there is no need for any use of
SIGALRM whatsoever. This patch removes all mention of it.
In addition, real_alarm_handler took a signal argument which is now always
SIGVTALRM. So, that is gone.

Put back an implementation of timeval_to_ns in arch/um/os-Linux/time.c.
tglx pointed out in his review of tickless support that there was a
perfectly good implementation of it in linux/time.h. The problem is that
this is userspace code which can't pull in kernel headers and there doesn't
seem to be a libc version.
So, I'm copying the version from linux/time.h rather than resurrecting my
version. This causes some declaration changes as it now returns a signed
value rather than an unsigned value.

Now, the idle loop now longer needs SIGALRM firing - it can just sleep for the
requisite amount of time and fake a timer interrupt when it finishes.
Any use of ITIMER_REAL now goes away. disable_timer only turns off
ITIMER_VIRTUAL. switch_timers is no longer needed, so it, and all calls, goes
away.
disable_timer now returns the amount of time remaining on the timer.
default_idle uses this to tell idle_sleep how long to sleep. idle_sleep will
call alarm_handler if nanosleep returns 0, which is the case if it didn't
return early due to an interrupt. Otherwise, it just returns.

Enable tickless support.
CONFIG_TICK_ONESHOT and CONFIG_NO_HZ are enabled.
itimer_clockevent gets CLOCK_EVT_FEAT_ONESHOT and an implementation of
.set_next_event.
CONFIG_UML_REAL_TIME_CLOCK goes away because it only makes sense when there is
a clock ticking away all the time. timer_handler now just calls do_IRQ once
without trying to figure out how many ticks to emulate.
The idle loop now needs to turn ticking on and off.
Userspace ticks keep happening as usual. However, the userspace loop keep
track of when the next wakeup should happen and suppresses process ticks until
that happens.

Enable CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS.
timer_irq gets its name changed to timer_handler, and becomes the recipient of
timer signals.
The clock_event_device is set up to imitate the current ticking clock, i.e.
CLOCK_EVT_FEAT_ONESHOT is not enabled yet.
disable_timer now doesn't ignore SIGALRM and SIGVTALRM because that breaks

virtual timer. So, it is not needed, and it is gone, and set_interval is
simplified appropriately.

Fix up the switching between virtual and real timers. The idle loop sleeps,
so the timer at that point must be real time. At all other times, the timer
must be virtual. Even when userspace is running, and the kernel is asleep,
the virtual timer is correct because the process timer will be running and the
process timer will be firing.
The timer switch used to be in the context switch and timer handler code.
This is moved to the idle loop and the signal handler, making it much more
clear why it is happening.
switch_timers now returns the old timer type so that it may be restored. The
signal handler uses this in order to restore the previous timer type when it
returns.

Fix the passing of printk output back to the mconsole client. The existing
code was somewhat confused, accumulating output in a buffer, but writing it
out entirely whenever a new chunk was added. This is fixed.
The earlier include cleanups caused linux/sysrq.h to not be included - this is
fixed by adding the include back, under CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ.
CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ is also defaulted to on in defconfig.

Handle floating point state better in ptrace. The code now correctly
distinguishes between PTRACE_[GS]ETFPREGS and PTRACE_[GS]ETFPXREGS. The FPX
requests get handed off to arch-specific code because that's not generic.
get_fpregs, set_fpregs, set_fpregs, and set_fpxregs needed real
implementations.
Something here exposed a missing include in asm/page.h, which needed
linux/types.h in order to get gfp_t, so that's fixed here.

Handle floating point state in across signals correctly. UML/i386 needs to
know whether the host does PTRACE_[GS]ETFPXREGS, so an arch_init_registers
hook is added, which on x86_64 does nothing.
UML doesn't save and restore floating point registers on kernel entry and
exit, so they need to be copied between the host process and the sigcontext.
save_fpx_registers and restore_fpx_registers are added for this purpose.
save_fp_registers and restore_fp_registers already exist.
There was a bunch of floating point state conversion code in
arch/um/sys-i386/ptrace.c which isn't needed there, but is needed in signal.c,
so it is moved over.
The i386 code now distinguishes between fp and fpx state and handles them
correctly. The x86_64 code just needs to copy state as-is between the host
process and the stack. There are also some fixes there to pass the correct
address of the floating point state around.

Stop including asm/user.h from libc - it seems to be disappearing from
distros. It's replaced with sys/user.h which defines user_fpregs_struct and
user_fpxregs_struct instead of user_i387_struct and struct user_fxsr_struct on
i386.
As a bonus, on x86_64, I get to dump some stupid typedefs which were needed in
order to get asm/user.h to compile.

Tidy the tlb flushing code.
With tt mode gone, there is no reason to have the capability to have
called directly from do_mmap, do_mprotect, and do_munmap, rather than
calling a function pointer that it is given.
There was a large amount of data that was passed from function to
function, being used at the lowest level, without being changed. This
stuff is now encapsulated in a structure which is initialized at the
top layer and passed down. This simplifies the code, reduces the
amount of code needed to pass the parameters around, and saves on
stack space.
A somewhat more subtle change is the meaning of the current operation
index. It used to start at -1, being pre-incremented when adding an
operation. It now starts at 0, being post-incremented, with
associated adjustments of +/- 1 on comparisons.
In addition, tlb.h contained a couple of declarations which had no
users outside of tlb.c, so they could be moved or deleted.

A number of files that were changed in the recent removal of tt mode
are userspace files which call the os_* wrappers instead of calling
libc directly. A few other files were affected by this, through
This patch makes these call glibc directly.
There are also style fixes in the affected areas.
os_print_error has no remaining callers, so it is deleted.
There is a interface change to os_set_exec_close, eliminating a
parameter which was always the same. The callers are fixed as well.
os_process_pc got its error path cleaned up.

Convert the boot-time host ptrace testing from clone to fork. They were

Before the removal of tt mode, access to a register on the skas-mode side of a
pt_regs struct looked like pt_regs.regs.skas.regs.regs[FOO]. This was bad
enough, but it became pt_regs.regs.regs.regs[FOO] with the removal of the
union from the middle. To get rid of the run of three "regs", the last field
is renamed to "gp".

do_longjmp used to be needed when UML didn't have its own implementation of
setjmp and longjmp. They came from libc, and couldn't be called directly from
kernel code, as the libc jmp_buf couldn't be imported there. do_longjmp was a
userspace function which served to provide longjmp access to kernel code.
This is gone, and a number of void * pointers can now be jmp_buf *.

This patch makes a number of simplifications enabled by the removal of
CHOOSE_MODE. There were lots of functions that looked like
int foo(args){
foo_skas(args);
}
The bodies of foo_skas are now folded into foo, and their declarations (and
sometimes entire header files) are deleted.
In addition, the union uml_pt_regs, which was a union between the tt and skas
register formats, is now a struct, with the tt-mode arm of the union being
removed.
It turns out that usr2_handler was unused, so it is gone.

The next stage after removing code which depends on CONFIG_MODE_TT is removing
the CHOOSE_MODE abstraction, which provided both compile-time and run-time
branching to either tt-mode or skas-mode code.
This patch removes choose-mode.h and all inclusions of it, and replaces all
CHOOSE_MODE invocations with the skas branch. This leaves a number of trivial
functions which will be dealt with in a later patch.
There are some changes in the uaccess and tls support which go somewhat beyond
this and eliminate some of the now-redundant functions.

This patchset throws out tt mode, which has been non-functional for a while.
This is done in phases, interspersed with code cleanups on the affected files.
The removal is done as follows:
remove all code, config options, and files which depend on
CONFIG_MODE_TT
get rid of the CHOOSE_MODE macro, which decided whether to
call tt-mode or skas-mode code, and replace invocations with their
skas portions
replace all now-trivial procedures with their skas equivalents
There are now a bunch of now-redundant pieces of data structures, including
mode-specific pieces of the thread structure, pt_regs, and mm_context. These
are all replaced with their skas-specific contents.
As part of the ongoing style compliance project, I made a style pass over all
files that were changed. There are three such patches, one for each phase,
covering the files affected by that phase but no later ones.
I noticed that we weren't freeing the LDT state associated with a process when
it exited, so that's fixed in one of the later patches.
The last patch is a tidying patch which I've had for a while, but which caused
inexplicable crashes under tt mode. Since that is no longer a problem, this
can now go in.
This patch:
Start getting rid of tt mode support.
This patch throws out CONFIG_MODE_TT and all config options, code, and files
which depend on it.
CONFIG_MODE_SKAS is gone and everything that depends on it is included
unconditionally.
The few changed lines are in re-written Kconfig help, lines which needed
something skas-related removed from them, and a few more which weren't
strictly deletions.

Throw out a lot of code dealing with saving and restoring floating-point
state. In skas mode, where processes run in a restoring floating-point state
on kernel entry and exit is pointless.
This eliminates most of arch/um/os-Linux/sys-{i386,x86_64}/registers.c. Most
of what remained is now arch-indpendent, and can be moved up to
arch/um/os-Linux/registers.c. Both arches need the jmp_buf accessor
get_thread_reg, and i386 needs {save,restore}_fp_regs because it cheats during
sigreturn by getting the fp state using ptrace rather than copying it out of
the process sigcontext.
After this, it turns out that arch/um/include/skas/mode-skas.h is almost
completely unneeded. The declarations in it are variables which either don't
exist or which don't have global scope. The one exception is
kill_off_processes_skas. If that's removed, this header can be deleted.
This uncovered a bug in user.h, which wasn't correctly making sure that a
size_t definition was available to both userspace and kernelspace files.

On some systems, with IPV6 configured, there is a clash between the kernel's
in6addr_any and the one in libc.
This is handled in the usual (gross) way of defining the kernel symbol out of

The previous console cleanup patch switched generic_read and generic_write
from calling os_{read,write}_file to calling read and write directly. Because
the calling convention is different, they now need to get any error from errno
rather than the return value. I did this for generic_read, but forgot about
generic_write.
While chasing some output corruption, I noticed that line_write was
unnecessarily calling flush_buffer, and deleted it. I don't understand why,
but the corruption disappeared. This is unneeded because there already is a
perfectly good mechanism for finding out when the host output device has some
room to write data - there is an interrupt that comes in when writes can
happen again. line_write calling flush_buffer seemed to just be an attempt to
opportunistically get some data out to the host.
I also made write_chan short-circuit calling into the host-level code for
zero-length writes. Calling libc write with a length of zero conflated write
not being able to write anything with asking it not to write anything. Better
to just cut it off as soon as possible.

Test was simple to do a defconfig build, apply the patch and check

we have uml allmodconfig building both on i386 and amd64.

This patch fixes a crash caused by an interrupt coming in when an IRQ stack
is being torn down. When this happens, handle_signal will loop, setting up
the IRQ stack again because the tearing down had finished, and handling
whatever signals had come in.
However, to_irq_stack returns a mask of pending signals to be handled, plus
bit zero is set if the IRQ stack was already active, and thus shouldn't be
torn down. This causes a problem because when handle_signal goes around
the loop, sig will be zero, and to_irq_stack will duly set bit zero in the
returned mask, faking handle_signal into believing that it shouldn't tear
down the IRQ stack and return thread_info pointers back to their original
values.
This will eventually cause a crash, as the IRQ stack thread_info will
continue pointing to the original task_struct and an interrupt will look
into it after it has been freed.
The fix is to stop passing a signal number into to_irq_stack. Rather, the
pending signals mask is initialized beforehand with the bit for sig already
set. References to sig in to_irq_stack can be replaced with references to
the mask.

I found a type mismatch in UML that makes host block devices unusable as ubd
devices on x86_64 and other 64 bits systems (segfault of the mm subsystem):
In block/ioctl.c, the following lines show that the BLKGETSIZE ioctl expects
a pointer to a long:

In arch/um/os-Linux/file.c, os_file_size calls it with an int.

Stop UML crashing when trying to dump a process core on x86_64. This is the
minimal fix to stop the crash - more things are broken here, and patches are
forthcoming.
The immediate thing to do is define ELF_CORE_COPY_REGS and
ELF_CORE_COPY_FPREGS. Defining ELF_CORE_COPY_FPREGS allows dump_fpu to go
away. It is defined in terms of save_fp_registers, so that needs to be added.

The previous patch which limited the number of sectors in a single request
to a COWed device was correct in concept, but the limit was implemented in
the wrong place.
By putting it in ubd_add, it covered the cases where the COWing was
specified on the command line. However, when the command line only has the
COW file specified, the fact that it's a COW file isn't known until it's
opened, so the limit is missed in these cases.
This patch moves the sector limit from ubd_add to ubd_open_dev.

2.6.23-rc1 turned up another batch of references from non-__init code to
__init code. In most cases, these were missing __init annotations. In one
case (os_drop_memory), the annotation was present but wrong.
init_maps is __init, but for some reason was being very careful about the
mechanism by which it allocated memory, checking whether it was OK to use
kmalloc (at this point in the boot, it definitely isn't) and using either
alloc_bootmem_low_pages or kmalloc/vmalloc. So, the kmalloc/vmalloc code is
removed.

Uli started this by seeing that UML's initialization of a struct iocb
initialized fields that it shouldn't.
Al followed up by adding the following cleanups:
eliminating a variable by just using an anonymous structure in
its place.
hoisting a duplicated line out of the switch.
simplifying the error checking at the end.
I added a severity to the printk.

In 2.6.23-rc1, i386 fiddled its string support such that UML started getting
undefined references from modules. The UML asm/string.h was including the
i386 string.h, which defined __HAVE_ARCH_STR*, but the corresponding
implementations weren't being pulled in.
This is fixed by adding arch/i386/lib/string.h to the list of host
architecture files to be pulled in to UML.
A complication is that the libc exports file assumed that the generic strlen
and strstr weren't in use (i.e. __HAVE_ARCH_STR is defined), then they aren't
exported. This is untrue for strlen, which is exported in either case, so
this logic is not needed.

Currently, CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG64 both enables boot-time checking of
the cmpxchg64b feature and enables compilation of the set_64bit() family.
Since the option is dependent on PAE, and since KVM depends on set_64bit(),
this effectively disables KVM on i386 nopae.
Simplify by removing the config option altogether: the boot check is made
dependent on CONFIG_X86_PAE directly, and the set_64bit() family is exposed
without constraints. It is up to users to check for the feature flag (KVM
does not as virtualiation extensions imply its existence).

This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into
bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. This requires requires
all handle_mm_fault callers to be modified (possibly the modifications
should go further and do things like fault accounting in handle_mm_fault --
however that would be for another patch).

COWed devices can't handle more than 32 (64 on x86_64) sectors in one request
due to the size of the bitmap being carried around in the io_thread_req.
Enforce that by telling the block layer not to put too many sectors in
requests to COWed devices.

UML had two wrapper procedures for kmalloc, um_kmalloc and um_kmalloc_atomic
because the flag constants weren't available in userspace code.
kern_constants.h had made kernel constants available for a long time, so there
is no need for these wrappers any more. Rather, userspace code calls kmalloc
directly with the userspace versions of the gfp flags.
kmalloc isn't a real procedure, so I had to essentially copy the inline
wrapper around __kmalloc.
vmalloc also had its own wrapper for no good reason. This is now gone.

run_helper and run_helper_thread had arguments which were the same in all
callers. run_helper's stack_out was always NULL and run_helper_thread's
stack_order was always 0. These are now gone, and the constants folded
into the code.
Also fixed leaks of the helper stack in the AIO and SIGIO code.

Cleanup of the SIGWINCH support.
Some code and comment reformatting.
The stack used for SIGWINCH threads was leaked. This is now fixed by storing
it with the pid and other information, and freeing it when the thread is
killed.
If something goes wrong with a WIGWINCH thread, and this is discovered in the
interrupt handler, the winch record would leak. It is now freed, except that
the IRQ isn't freed. This is hard to do from interrupt context. This has the
side-effect that the IRQ system maintains a reference to the freed structure,
but that shouldn't cause a problem since the descriptor is disabled.
register_winch_irq is now much better about cleaning up after an
initialization failure.

If the host side of a console can't be opened, this will now produce visible
error messages.
enable_chan now returns a status and this is passed up to con_open and
ssl_open, which will complain if anything went wrong.
The default host device for the serial line driver is now a pts device rather
than a pty device since lots of hosts have LEGACY_PTYS disabled. This had
always been failing on such hosts, but silently.

DEBUG_SHIRQ generates spurious interrupts, triggering handlers such as
mconsole_interrupt() or line_interrupt(). They expect data to be available to
be read from their sockets/pipes, but in the case of spurious interrupts, the
host didn't actually send anything, so UML hangs in read() and friends.
Setting those fd's as O_NONBLOCK makes DEBUG_SHIRQ-enabled UML kernels boot
and run correctly.

It is theoretically possible for a request to finish and be freed between
writing it to the I/O thread and updating the sector count. In this case, the
update will dereference a freed pointer.
To avoid this, I delay the update until processing the next sg segment, when
the request pointer is known to be good.

Distros seem to be removing PAGE_SIZE from asm/page.h. So, the libc side of
UML should stop using it.
I replace it with UM_KERN_PAGE_SIZE, which is defined to be the same as
PAGE_SIZE on the kernel side of the house. I could also use getpagesize(),
but it's more important that UML have the same value of PAGE_SIZE everywhere.
It's conceivable that it could be built with a larger PAGE_SIZE, and use of
getpagesize() would break that badly.
PAGE_MASK got the same treatment, as it is closely tied to PAGE_SIZE.

Add a separate IRQ stack. This differs from i386 in having the entire
interrupt run on a separate stack rather than starting on the normal kernel
stack and switching over once some preparation has been done. The underlying
mechanism, is of course, sigaltstack.
Another difference is that interrupts that happen in userspace are handled on
the normal kernel stack. These cause a wait wakeup instead of a signal
delivery so there is no point in trying to switch stacks for these. There's
no other stuff on the stack, so there is no extra stack consumption.
This quirk makes it possible to have the entire interrupt run on a separate
stack - process preemption (and calls to schedule()) happens on a normal
kernel stack. If we enable CONFIG_PREEMPT, this will need to be rethought.
The IRQ stack for CPU 0 is declared in the same way as the initial kernel
stack. IRQ stacks for other CPUs will be allocated dynamically.
An extra field was added to the thread_info structure. When the active
thread_info is copied to the IRQ stack, the real_thread field points back to
the original stack. This makes it easy to tell where to copy the thread_info
struct back to when the interrupt is finished. It also serves as a marker of
a nested interrupt. It is NULL for the first interrupt on the stack, and
non-NULL for any nested interrupts.
Care is taken to behave correctly if a second interrupt comes in when the
thread_info structure is being set up or taken down. I could just disable
interrupts here, but I don't feel like giving up any of the performance gained
by not flipping signals on and off.
If an interrupt comes in during these critical periods, the handler can't run
because it has no idea what shape the stack is in. So, it sets a bit for its
signal in a global mask and returns. The outer handler will deal with this
signal itself.
Atomicity is had with xchg. A nested interrupt that needs to bail out will
xchg its signal mask into pending_mask and repeat in case yet another
interrupt hit at the same time, until the mask stabilizes.
The outermost interrupt will set up the thread_info and xchg a zero into
pending_mask when it is done. At this point, nested interrupts will look at
->real_thread and see that no setup needs to be done. They can just continue
normally.
Similar care needs to be taken when exiting the outer handler. If another
interrupt comes in while it is copying the thread_info, it will drop a bit
into pending_mask. The outer handler will check this and if it is non-zero,
will loop, set up the stack again, and handle the interrupt.

Allow a pcap device to be assigned a MAC on the command line. They don't
really need one, but it is handy to be able to do when your distro assigns a
new ethernet device whenever it sees a new MAC.

Some network device cleanup.
When setup_etheraddr found a globally valid MAC being assigned to an
interface, it went ahead and used it rather than assigning a random MAC like
the other cases do. This isn't really an error like the others, but it seems
consistent to make it behave the same.
We were getting some duplicate kfree() in the error case in eth_configure
because platform_device_unregister frees buffers that the error cases
following tried to free again.
The pcap initialization routine wasn't doing the proper printk of its
information, causing a printk of the first part of that line to be
unterminated by a newline.
The pcap code had a bunch of style violations, which are now fixed.
pcap_setup wasn't returning false when it detected an unrecognized
option.
The printks in pcap_user all got UM_KERN_BLAH prepended to their
format strings.
pcap_remove now checks for a non-NULL pcap structure before it calls
pcap_close.

The ever-vigilant users of linode.com noticed that an idle 2.6 UML has a
persistent load average of ~.4.
It turns out that because the UML timer handler processed softirqs before
actually delivering the tick, the tick was counted in the context of the idle
thread about half the time.

With the current timekeeping, !CONFIG_UML_REAL_TIME_CLOCK has
inconsistent behavior. Previously, gettimeofday could be (and was)
isolated from the clock ticking. Now, it's not, so when
CONFIG_UML_REAL_TIME_CLOCK is disabled, gettimeofday must progress in
lockstep with the clock, making it fully virtual.

More trimming of the page fault path.
Permissions are passed around in a single int rather than one bit per
int. The permission values are copied from libc so that they can be
passed to mmap and mprotect without any further conversion.
The register sets used by do_syscall_stub and copy_context_skas0 are
initialized once, at boot time, rather than once per call.
wait_stub_done checks whether it is getting the signals it expects by
comparing the wait status to a mask containing bits for the signals of
interest rather than comparing individually to the signal numbers. It
also has one check for a wait failure instead of two. The caller is
expected to do the initial continue of the stub. This gets rid of an
argument and some logic. The fname argument is gone, as that can be
had from a stack trace.
user_signal() is collapsed into userspace() as it is basically one or
two lines of code afterwards.
The physical memory remapping stuff is gone, as it is unused.
flush_tlb_page is inlined.

Give the page fault code a specialized path. There is only one page to look
at, so there's no point in going into the general page table walking code.
There's only going to be one host operation, so there are no opportunities for
merging. So, we go straight to the pte we want, figure out what needs doing,
and do it.
While I was in here, I fixed the wart where the address passed to unmap was a
void *, but an unsigned long to map and protect.
This gives me just under 10% on a kernel build.

Code running on the initial UML stack can't receive or process signals since
current must be valid when IRQs are handled, and there is no current for this
stack.
So, instead of using UML_LONGJMP and UML_SETJMP, which are careful to save and
restore signal state, and, as a side-effect, handle any deferred signals,
start_idle_thread must use the bare equivalents, which don't do anything with
signals.

Instead of writing entire structures between UML and the I/O thread, we send
pointers. This cuts down on the amount of data being copied and possibly
allows more requests to be pending between the two.
This requires that the requests be kmalloced and freed instead of living on
the stack.

Send as many I/O requests to the I/O thread as possible, even though it will
still only handle one at a time. This provides an opportunity to reduce
latency by starting one request before the previous one has been finished in
the driver.
Request handling is somewhat modernized by requesting sg pieces of a request
and handling them separately, finishing off the entire request after all the
pieces are done.
When a request queue stalls, normally because its pipe to the I/O thread is
full, it is put on the restart list. This list is processed by starting up
the queues on it whenever there is some indication that progress might be
possible again. Currently, this happens in the driver interrupt routine.
Some requests have been finished, so there is likely to be room in the pipe
again.
This almost doubles throughput when copying data between devices, but made no
noticable difference on anything else I tried.

This patch converts calls in the os layer to os_{read,write}_file to calls
directly to libc read() and write() where it is clear that the I/O buffer is
in the kernel.
We can do that here instead of calling os_{read,write}_file_k since we are in
libc code and can call libc directly.
With the change in the calls, error handling needs to be changed to refer to
errno directly rather than the return value of the call.
CATCH_EINTR wrappers were also added where needed.

areas.
do_not_aio gets restructured to make the final result a bit cleaner.

This patch starts the removal of a very old, very broken piece of code. This
stems from the problem of passing a userspace buffer into read() or write() on
the host. If that buffer had not yet been faulted in, read and write will
return -EFAULT.
To avoid this problem, the solution was to fault the buffer in before the
system call by touching the pages that hold the buffer by doing a copy-user of
a byte to each page. This is obviously bogus, but it does usually work, in tt
mode, since the kernel and process are in the same address space and userspace
addresses can be accessed directly in the kernel.
In skas mode, where the kernel and process are in separate address spaces, it
is completely bogus because the userspace address, which is invalid in the
kernel, is passed into the system call instead of the corresponding physical
address, which would be valid. Here, it appears that this code, on every host
read() or write(), tries to fault in a random process page. This doesn't seem
to cause any correctness problems, but there is a performance impact. This
patch, and the ones following, result in a 10-15% performance gain on a kernel
build.
This code can't be immediately tossed out because when it is, you can't log
in. Apparently, there is some code in the console driver which depends on
this somehow.
However, we can start removing it by switching the code which does I/O using
kernel addresses to using plain read() and write(). This patch introduces
os_read_file_k and os_write_file_k for use with kernel buffers and converts
all call locations which use obvious kernel buffers to use them. These
include I/O using buffers which are local variables which are on the stack or
kmalloc-ed. Later patches will handle the less obvious cases, followed by a
mass conversion back to the original interface.

The previous page table walking code was horribly inefficient. This patch
replaces it with code taken from elsewhere in the kernel.
Forking from bash is now ~5% faster and page faults are handled ~10% faster.

If there's a segfault inside the kernel, we want a dump of the registers at
the point of the segfault, not the registers at the point of calling panic or
the last userspace registers.
sig_handler_common_skas now uses a static register set in the case of a
SIGSEGV to avoid messing up the process registers if the segfault turns out to
be non-fatal.
The architecture sigcontext-to-pt_regs copying code was repurposed to copy
data out of the SEGV stack frame.

Tidying in preparation for the segfault register dumping patch which follows.
void * pointers are changed to union uml_pt_regs *. This makes the types
match reality, except in arch_fixup, which is changed to operate on a union
uml_pt_regs. This fixes a bug in the call from segv_handler, which passes a
union uml_pt_regs, to segv, which expects to pass a struct sigcontext to
arch_fixup.
Whitespace and other style fixes.
There's also a errno printk fix.

userspace code used to have to call the kernelspace function page_size() in
order to determine the value of the kernel's PAGE_SIZE. Since this is now
available directly from kern_constants.h as UM_KERN_PAGE_SIZE, page_size() can
be deleted and calls changed to use the constant.

flush_thread doesn't need to do a full page table walk in order to clear the
address space. It knows what the end result needs to be, so it can call unmap
directly.
This results in a 10-20% speedup in an exec from bash.

Most users just cast user to the appropriate pointer, the remaining ones are
fixed here. In net_kern.c, I'm almost sure that save trick is not needed
anymore, but I've not verified it.

Avoid using the temporary buffer introduced by previous patch to hold the
device name.

Improve checking and diagnostics for broadcast and multicast Ethernet MAC
addresses, and distinguish between those cases in output; also make sure the
device is assigned a MAC address valid only locally to avoid collisions.

Rescue the useful contents of the soon-to-be-gone user-util.h.
pty.c now gets ptsname from stdlib.h like it should have always done.
CATCH_EINTR is now in os.h, although perhaps all usage should be under
os-Linux at some point.
get_pty is also in os.h.
This patch restores the old definition of ARRAY_SIZE in user.h. This file is
included only in userspace files, so there will be no conflict with the
kernel's new ARRAY_SIZE. The copy of the kernel's ARRAY_SIZE and associated
infrastructure is now gone.

This patch moves all the the symbols defined in um_arch.c, which are mostly
boundaries between different parts of the UML kernel address space, to a new
header, as-layout.h. There are also a few things here which aren't really
related to address space layout, but which don't really have a better place to
go.

This patch narrows the sigio interface. The boot-time SIGIO testing used to
be in start_up.c, which meant that pty_output_sigio and pty_close_sigio needed
to be global. By moving that code here, those can become static and the
declarations moved from user_util.h.
os_check_bugs is also here because it only does the SIGIO checking. If it
does more, it'll probably move back to start_up.c.

We can use a gcc extension to ensure that ARRAY_SIZE() is handed an array,
not a pointer. This is especially important when code is changed from a
fixed array to a pointer. I assume the Intel compiler doesn't support
__builtin_types_compatible_p.

This fixes a number of problems associated with network interface hotplug.
The userspace initialization function can fail in some cases, but the
failure was never passed back to eth_configure, which proceeded with the
configuration. This results in a zombie device that is present, but can't
work. This is fixed by allowing the initialization routines to return an
error, which is checked, and the configuration aborted on failure.
eth_configure failed to check for many failures. Even when it did check,
it didn't undo whatever initializations has already happened, so a present,
but partially initialized and non-working device could result. It now
checks everything that can fail, and bails out, undoing whatever had been
done.
The return value of eth_configure was always ignored, so it is now just
void.

There are also a couple of errno use bugs:
using errno in a printk when the failure put errno into a local variable
saving errno after a printk, which can change it

If a disk fails to open, i.e. its host file doesn't exist, it won't be
removable because the hot-unplug code checks the existence of its gendisk.
This won't exist because it is only allocated for successfully opened disks.
Thus, a typo on the command line can result in a unusable and unfixable disk.
This is fixed by freeing the gendisk if it's there, but not letting that
affect the removal.

Print out core dump limits at boot time. This is to allow core dumps
to be collected if something goes very wrong and to tell if a core
dump isn't going to happen because of a resource limit.
