PM Timer is now optional.
This support is already in Windows8 and "SHOULD" come out in ACPI 5.0A
(if all goes well).
The change doesn't affect Linux directly, because it does not rely
on the presence of the PM timer.

Currently applies to the _WAK method only. If the method has no return
value and slack mode is not enabled, the return value validation code
can fault.
Also improves the error message when an expected return value is
missing (for any predefined name/method).
The problem fixed here cannot happen on Linux unless acpi=strict is
added to the kernel command line.

Previously, references to these objects were resolved only to the actual
FieldUnit or BufferField object. The correct behavior is to resolve these
references to an actual value.
The problem is that DerefOf did not resolve these objects to actual
values. An "Integer" object is simple, return the value. But a field in
an operation region will require a read operation. For a BufferField, the
appropriate data must be extracted from the parent buffer.
NOTE: It appears that this issues is present in Windows7 but not
Windows8.

Put all of the unresolved external method declarations in a single block,
since they are important and may cause the resulting disassembled ASL file
to not compile.
This patch only affects ACPICA utilities and is necessary to avoid adding
source code divergences between Linux and ACPICA upstream.

Add new API to allow OSPM to disable/enable specific types of _OSI
interface strings.
ACPICA does not have the knowledge about whether an _OSI interface
string is an OS vendor string or a feature group string and there
isn't any API interface to allow OSPM to install a new interface
string as a feature group string.
This patch simply adds all feature group strings defined by ACPI
specification into the acpi_default_supported_interfaces with
ACPI_OSI_FEATURE flag set to fix this gap. This patch also adds
codes to keep their default states as ACPI_OSI_INVALID before the
initialization and after the termination.

Was 256 bytes max. The original purpose of this constraint was to
limit the amount of debug output. However, the string function in
question (UtPrintString) is now used for the disassembler also,

Expose acpi_gbl_osi_data so that code outside of ACPICA can check
the value of the last successfull _OSI call. The definitions for
OSI versions are moved to actypes.h so that other components can
access them too.

Previous implementation incorrectly used the ACPI 5.0 extended
sleep registers if they were simply populated. This caused
problems on some non-HW-reduced machines. As per the ACPI spec,
they should only be used if the HW-reduced bit is set. Lv Zheng,

This refers to _REG methods under the EC device that have no
corresponding operation region. This is allowed by the ACPI
specification. This update removes a dependency on having an
ECDT table, and will execute an orphan _REG method as long as
the handler for the EC is installed at the EC device node (not

Certain external interfaces need to update object references
without holding the interpreter or namespace mutex objects. To
prevent race conditions, add a spinlock around the increment

This change removes a size mismatch warning if the legacy
length field for a GPE register set is larger than the 64-bit
GAS structure can accomodate. GPE register sets can be larger

Add checks for zero-length resource descriptors in all code that
loops through a resource descriptor list. This prevents possible
infinite loops because the length is used to increment the traveral
pointer and detect the end-of-descriptor.

The second object for each sub-package of the _MLS method is
defined to be a unicode Buffer object. This fixes the predefined
table where this object was incorrectly defined as a String.

Implemented for both the compiler and the disassembler. Often,
the NOOP opcode is used as padding for packages that are changed
dynamically by the BIOS. When disassembled, these NOOPs will
cause syntax errors. This option causes the disassembler to ignore
the NOOP opcode, and it also causes the compiler to ignore NOOP
statements as well.

Although the ACPI spec defines the \_Sx objects to return
a package containing one integer, most BIOS code returns two
integers and the previous code reflects that. However, we also
need to support BIOS code that actually implements to the ACPI
spec, and this change implements this.

The predefined info table defines return types for specific control
methods. This patch updates predefined table as such enhancement has
already been done in ACPICA. This patch can also reduce source code
differences between Linux and ACPICA.

For the cases such as a store of a string to an existing package
object, implement the store as a CopyObject().
This is a small departure from the ACPI specification which states
that the control method should be aborted in this case. However,
ASLTS suite depends on this behavior.

These two bits are merged at the external interface level for the
IRQ, Interrupt, and GpioInt resource descriptors. However, these
bits are logically independent and there is no need to keep them
merged internally. Therefore, this change splits the bits into
"sharable" and "wake capable" fields within the resource manager.
This simplifies drive code that needs to examine these bits.

Some ASL compilers allow 64-bit constants within a 32-bit table
(DSDT version == 1). When encountered, emit a warning that the
constant will be truncated to 32 bits. This is potentially a
serious problem in the ACPI table(s).

This command was downreved and did not properly disassemble control
methods with any reasonable complexity. This fix brings the command
up to the same level as the rest of the disassembler. Adds one
new file, dmdeferred.c, which is existing code that is now common
with the main disassembler and the debugger disassembl command.

Tracing is no longer needed for many of the low-level function.

This change greatly increases the performance of package objects
within the interpreter. It changes the processing of reference
counts for packages by optimizing for the most common case where
the package subobjects are either integers, strings, or buffers.
Increases the performance of the ASLTS test suite by 1.5X.

The ACPICA uses a call depth tracing mechanism by wrapping the return
statements with return macros and marking the entrance with
ACPI_FUNCTION_TRACE_ macros. There are other ACPI_FUNCTION_ macros used
to mark the functions not using this tracing mechanism.
This patch fixes broken call depth tracing logic.

The ACPICA source codes uses a totally different indentation style from the
Linux to be compatible with other users (operating systems or BIOS).
Indentation differences are critical to the release automation. There are
two causes related to the "indentation" that are affecting the release
automation:
1. The ACPICA -> Linux release process is:
ACPICA source -- acpisrc - hierarchy - indent ->
linuxized ACPICA source -- diff ->
linuxized ACPICA patch (x) -- human intervention ->
linuxized ACPICA patch (o)
Where
'x' means "cannot be directly applied to the Linux"
'o' means "can be directly applied to the Linux"
Different "indent" version or "indent" options used in the "indent"
step will lead to different divergences.
The version of "indent" used for the current release process is:
GNU indent 2.2.11
The options of "indent" used for the current release process is:
-npro -kr -i8 -ts8 -sob -l80 -ss -ncs
2. Manual indentation prettifying work in the Linux side will also harm the
automatically generated linuxized ACPICA patches, making them impossible
to apply directly.
This patch fixes source code differences caused by the two causes so that
the "human intervention" can be reduced in the future.

The mini-C library implementation is used by the embedded ACPICA users
other than Linux. It was added to the kernel source to make it easier
to incorporate future ACPICA changes, but as it turns our we can avoid
carrying it thanks to some ACPICA release process tweaks, so remove
drivers/acpi/acpica/utclib.c from the kernel source tree.

Add some intelligence to the code that maintains the global
list of allocated memory. The list is now ordered by allocated
memory address, significantly improving performance. When running
AcpiExec on the ASLTS test suite, speed improvements of 3X to 5X
are seen, depending on the platform and/or the environment.

New version of "indent" program will generate different outputs that
will lead to the divergences between the Linux and the ACPICA.
This patch fixes such divergences caused by the "indent" program.
The version of the "indent" used for this patch is "GNU indent 2.2.11".

There are conflicts in the "acpi_device_id*" definitions between the
Linux and the ACPICA. The definitions of acpi_device_id* in ACPICA
have been changed to the "acpi_pnp_device_id*". This patch changes
the corresponding "acpica_device_id*" definitiions in the Linux.

Utility improvements in ACPICA are partial ignored by ACPICA Linux
release. This will lead to divergences between Linux and ACPICA.
This patch ports the entire "utility" into Linux and makes them
igored in the compilation stage by "ACPI_FUTURE_USAGE".

Implemented a change/cleanup for the handling of invalid ACPI names.
Names are now validated and repaired only when
1) entering a new name into the namespace and
2) disassembling a named AML opcode. A warning is only displayed in
debug mode or when the interpreter is in "strict" mode, since some
working machines do in fact contain invalid ACPI names.

_PLD (Physical Location of Device) returns a bit-packed buffer that
is difficult to parse. This change adds a new interface,
AcpiDecodePldBuffer that parses the buffer into a more usable
local struct. Also adds macros to both get and set individual
fields within the packed _PLD buffer. Adds a new include file,
acbuffer.h - which will be expanded to add structs for other
ACPI names that return buffers. ACPICA BZ 954.
Emit (in comments) the decoded contents of a static _PLD buffer
in order to improve comprehension of this bit-packed buffer.
Add multi-endian support to the _PLD decode routine. Deploy the
multi-endian macros to extract data from the _PLD buffer.

_GTS and _BFS were added to the suspend/resume flow
in the ACPI 2.0 specification.
Linux dutifully implemented _GTS and _BFS.
We discovered that it was rarely seen in systems
in the field. Further, some of those systems had
AML so bogus that it could never work -- proof that
no other operating system supports _GTS and _BFS.
So we made _GTS and _BFS optional via modparam,
and disabled them by default.
But we've had to complicate some code to keep
this support in the kernel, as these methods are defined
to be evaluated very close to sleep entry and exit.
Indeed, no other AML is ever evaluated with interrupts off.
We have submitted a proposal for _GTS and _BFS
to be officially removed from the ACPI specification
on the next revision. Here we remove it from Linux.

The bug snuck back in in commit 2feec47d4c (ACPICA: ACPI 5: Support
for new FADT SleepStatus, SleepControl registers, 2012-02-14),
presumably by copy/pasting a copy of the code without that fix for the
legacy case.
On affected machines, after that commit, the machine locks up hard on
resume from suspend. The same fix as seven years ago still works.

Error for possible overflow during conversion from 32-bit legacy
register addresses to GAS format. The GAS struct contains a

It breaks reboot on at least one Thinkpad T43, as reported by Jörg Otte:
"On reboot it shuts down as normal.

Then I hear it accessing the cd-drive, but then it's being stuck."
Jörg bisected the regression to this commit.
That commit fixes another machine (see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11533
for details) that has a BIOS bug and doesn't support ACPI reset.
However, at least one of those other reporters no longer even has the
machine in question, and had a different workaround to begin with.
Besides, it clearly was a buggy BIOS. Let's not break the correct case
to fix that case.

Repair a common problem with objects that are defined to return
a variable-length Package of sub-objects. If there is only one
sub-object, some BIOS code mistakenly simply declares the single
object instead of a Package with one sub-object. This function
attempts to repair this error by wrapping a Package object around
the original object, creating the correct and expected Package
with one sub-object.

Enhanced the sleep/wake interfaces to optionally execute the
_GTS method (Going To Sleep), and the _BFS method (Back From
Sleep). Windows apparently does not execute these methods, and
therefore these methods are often untested. It has been seen on
some systems where the execution of these methods causes errors
and also prevents the machine from entering S5. It is therefore
suggested that host operating systems do not execute these methods
by default. In the future, perhaps these methods can be optionally
executed based on the age of the system and/or what is the newest
version of Windows that the BIOS asks for via _OSI.

Changed the METHOD_NAME* defines that define a full pathname to
the method to METHOD_PATHNAME* in order to make it clear that

This interface allows the host to override a table via a
physical address, instead of the logical address required by
acpi_os_table_override. This simplifies the host implementation.
Initial implementation by Thomas Renninger. ACPICA implementation
creates a single function for table overrides that attempts both
a logical and a physical override.

This change expands acpi_os_read_memory and acpi_os_write_memory to a
full 64 bits. This allows 64 bit transfers via the acpi_read and
acpi_write interfaces. Note: The internal acpi_hw_read and acpi_hw_write
interfaces remain at 32 bits, because 64 bits is not needed to
access the standard ACPI registers.

"Remove use of unreliable FADT revision field" causes regression
for old P4 systems because now cst_control and other fields are
not reset to 0.
The effect is that acpi_processor_power_init will notice
cst_control != 0 and a write to CST_CNT register is performed
that should not happen. As result, the system oopses after the
"No _CST, giving up" message, sometimes in acpi_ns_internalize_name,
sometimes in acpi_ns_get_type, usually at random places. May be
during migration to CPU 1 in acpi_processor_get_throttling.
Every one of these settings help to avoid this problem:
- acpi=off
- processor.nocst=1
- maxcpus=1
The fix is to update acpi_gbl_FADT.header.length after
the original value is used to check for old revisions.

The ACPI suspend path makes a call to tboot_sleep right before
it writes the PM1A, PM1B values. We replace the direct call to
tboot via an registration callback similar to __acpi_register_gsi.

module_param(bool) used to counter-intuitively take an int. In
fddd5201 (mid-2009) we allowed bool or int/unsigned int using a messy
trick.
It's time to remove the int/unsigned int option. For this version
it'll simply give a warning, but it'll break next kernel version.

Calling pm-suspend might trigger a recursive lock in it's code path.
In function acpi_hw_clear_acpi_status, acpi_os_acquire_lock holds
the lock acpi_gbl_hardware_lock before calling acpi_hw_register_write(),
then without releasing acpi_gbl_hardware_lock, this function calls
acpi_ev_walk_gpe_list, which tries to hold acpi_gbl_gpe_lock.
Both acpi_gbl_hardware_lock and acpi_gbl_gpe_lock are at same
lock-class and which might cause lock recursion deadlock.
Following patch fixes this scenario by just releasing
acpi_gbl_hardware_lock before calling acpi_ev_walk_gpe_list.

These files were relying on module.h to come in via the path
in an include/acpi header file, but we don't want to have
instances of module.h being included from include/* files
if it can be avoided. Have the files include export.h instead.

We can only sort the _TSS return package if there is no _PSS
in the same scope. This is because if _PSS is present, the ACPI
specification dictates that the _TSS Power Dissipation field is
to be ignored, and therefore some BIOSs leave garbage values in
the _TSS Power field(s). In this case, it is best to just return
the _TSS package as-is.

of names eligible to have NULL package elements dynamically
removed. This group is the names that return a single
variable-length package containing simple data types such
as integers, buffers, strings. This includes: _ALx,_BCL,_CID,
_DOD,_EDL,_FIX,_PCL,_PLD,_PMD,_PRx,_PSL,_Sx, and _TZD.

Commit 9cd0314(ACPI / ACPICA: Fix global lock acquisition) was backported
into ACPICA code base, and some divergence was introduced.
This patch fixed it,
- rename acpi_ev_global_lock_pending/acpi_ev_global_lock_pending_lock
to acpi_gbl_global_lock_pending/acpi_gbl_global_lock_pending_lock.
- move the initialization of acpi_gbl_global_lock_pending_lock from
acpi_ut_mutex_initialize to acpi_ev_init_global_lock_handler.

Section 4.7.3.6 of the ACPI specification requires that the register width
of the reset vector be 8 bits. Windows simply hardcodes the access to be
a byte and ignores the width provided in the FADT, so make sure that we
do the same.

The memory/io/pci/dataTable regions must always be available. For
any user installed handlers for these spaces, defer execution
of _REG methods until acpi_enable_subsystem. This prevents any
chicken/egg problems and ensures that no methods are executed
until all of these regions are ready and available.

Commit bba63a2 (ACPICA: Implicit notify support) introduced a
mechanism that causes a notify request of type
ACPI_NOTIFY_DEVICE_WAKE to be queued automatically by
acpi_ev_asynch_execute_gpe_method() for the device whose _PRW points
to the GPE being handled if that GPE is not associated with an
_Lxx/_Exx method. However, it turns out that on some systems there
are multiple devices with _PRW pointing to the same GPE without
_Lxx/_Exx and the mechanism introduced by commit bba63a2 needs to be
extended so that "implicit" notify requests of type
ACPI_NOTIFY_DEVICE_WAKE can be queued automatically for all those
devices at the same time.

Some ACPI BIOSes define _PRW for the root object which causes
acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake() to crash when trying to dereference the
bogus device_node pointer. Avoid the crash by checking if
wake_device is not the root object before attempting to set up the
"implicit notify" mechanism for it.
The problem was introduced by commit bba63a296f
(ACPICA: Implicit notify support) that added the wake_device argument
to acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake().

History: This support changes a method to "serialized" on the fly if the
method generates an AE_ALREADY_EXISTS error, indicating the possibility
that it cannot handle reentrancy.
This fix repairs a couple of issues seen in the field, especially on
machines with many cores.
1) Delete method children only upon the exit of the last thread, so
as to not delete objects out from under running threads.
2) Set the "serialized" bit for the method only upon the exit of the
last thread, so as to not cause deadlock when running threads attempt
to exit.
3) Cleanup the use of the AML "MethodFlags" and internal method flags
so that there is no longer any confustion between the two.

Prevents issues if the namespace is changing underneath the
debugger. Especially temporary nodes, since the debugger displays
these also.

Fixes a race condition between method execution and namespace
walks that can possibly fault. Problem was apparently introduced
in version 20100528 as a result of a performance optimization
that reduces the number of namespace walks upon method exit
by using the delete_namespace_subtree function instead of the
delete_namespace_by_owner function used previously. Bug is in
the delete_namespace_subtree function.
