Arnd Bergmann 788257d610 ufs: remove the BKL
This introduces a new per-superblock mutex in UFS to replace
the big kernel lock. I have been careful to avoid nested
calls to lock_ufs and to get the lock order right with
respect to other mutexes, in particular lock_super.

I did not make any attempt to prove that the big kernel
lock is not needed in a particular place in the code,
which is very possible.

The mutex has a significant performance impact, so it is only
used on SMP or PREEMPT configurations.

As Nick Piggin noticed, any allocation inside of the lock
may end up deadlocking when we get to ufs_getfrag_block
in the reclaim task, so we now use GFP_NOFS.

Nick Piggin fa0d7e3de6 fs: icache RCU free inodes
RCU free the struct inode. This will allow:

- Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for
  permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must.
- sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want
  to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in
  the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking.
- Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code
- Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the
  page lock to follow page->mapping.

The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple
creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to
reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts
kicking over, this increases to about 20%.

In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated
during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is
not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller.

The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU,
however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking,
so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in
real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I
doubt it will be a problem.

Jan Blunck db71922217 BKL: Explicitly add BKL around get_sb/fill_super
This patch is a preparation necessary to remove the BKL from do_new_mount().
It explicitly adds calls to lock_kernel()/unlock_kernel() around
get_sb/fill_super operations for filesystems that still uses the BKL.

I've read through all the code formerly covered by the BKL inside
do_kern_mount() and have satisfied myself that it doesn't need the BKL
any more.

do_kern_mount() is already called without the BKL when mounting the rootfs
and in nfsctl. do_kern_mount() calls vfs_kern_mount(), which is called
from various places without BKL: simple_pin_fs(), nfs_do_clone_mount()
through nfs_follow_mountpoint(), afs_mntpt_do_automount() through
afs_mntpt_follow_link(). Both later functions are actually the filesystems
follow_link inode operation. vfs_kern_mount() is calling the specified
get_sb function and lets the filesystem do its job by calling the given
fill_super function.

Therefore I think it is safe to push down the BKL from the VFS to the
low-level filesystems get_sb/fill_super operation.

Thomas Stewart d27d7a9a78 ufs: permit mounting of BorderWare filesystems
I recently had to recover some files from an old broken machine that was
running BorderWare Document Gateway.  It's basically a drop in web server
for sharing files.  From the look of the init process and using strings on
of a few files it seems to be based on FreeBSD 3.3.

The process turned out to be more difficult than I imagined, but to cut a
long story short BorderWare in their wisdom use a nonstandard magic number
in their UFS (ufstype=44bsd) file systems.  Thus Linux refuses to mount
the file systems in order to recover the data.  After a bit of hunting I
was able to make a quick fix to fs/ufs/super.c in order to detect the new
magic number.

I assume that this number is the same for all installations.  It's quite
easy to find out from ufs_fs.h.  The superblock sits 8k into the block
device and the magic number its 1372 bytes into the superblock struct.

Jan Kara 8f45c33dec ufs: Remove dead quota code
UFS quota is non-functional at least since 2.6.12 because dq_op was set
to NULL. Since the filesystem exists mainly to allow cooperation with Solaris
and quota format isn't standard, just remove the dead code.

Christoph Hellwig e0ccfd959c quota: move unmount handling into the filesystem
Currently the VFS calls into the quotactl interface for unmounting
filesystems.  This means filesystems with their own quota handling
can't easily distinguish between user-space originating quotaoff
and an unount.  Instead move the responsibily of the unmount handling
into the filesystem to be consistent with all other dquot handling.

Note that we do call dquot_disable a lot later now, e.g. after
a sync_filesystem.  But this is fine as the quota code does all its
writes via blockdev's mapping and that is synced even later.

Christoph Hellwig c79d967de3 quota: move remount handling into the filesystem
Currently do_remount_sb calls into the dquot code to tell it about going
from rw to ro and ro to rw.  Move this code into the filesystem to
not depend on the dquot code in the VFS - note ocfs2 already ignores
these calls and handles remount by itself.  This gets rid of overloading
the quotactl calls and allows to unify the VFS and XFS codepaths in
that area later.

Alex Viskovatoff b3a0fd4d87 fs/ufs: recognize Solaris-specific file system state
Recent releases of Solaris set the fs_clean state of an unmounted UFS file
system as FSLOG ("logging fs").  However, the Linux kernel currently does
not recognize the value which represents this state.  Thus, attempting to
mount such a file system rw produces the message

kernel: ufs_read_super: can't grok fs_clean 0xfffffffd

and the file system is mounted read-only.  This patch makes the kernel
recognize that value.

Christoph Hellwig 9f75475802 dquot: cleanup dquot drop routine
Get rid of the drop dquot operation - it is now always called from
the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none
currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly.

Rename the now static low-level dquot_drop helper to __dquot_drop
and vfs_dq_drop to dquot_drop to have a consistent namespace.

Christoph Hellwig ebc1ac1645 ->write_super lock_super pushdown
Push down lock_super into ->write_super instances and remove it from the
caller.

Following filesystem don't need ->s_lock in ->write_super and are skipped:

 * bfs, nilfs2 - no other uses of s_lock and have internal locks in
	->write_super
 * ext2 - uses BKL in ext2_write_super and has internal calls without s_lock
 * reiserfs - no other uses of s_lock as has reiserfs_write_lock (BKL) in
 	->write_super
 * xfs - no other uses of s_lock and uses internal lock (buffer lock on
	superblock buffer) to serialize ->write_super.  Also xfs_fs_write_super
	is superflous and will go away in the next merge window

Al Viro bbd6851a32 Push lock_super() into the ->remount_fs() of filesystems that care about it
Note that since we can't run into contention between remount_fs and write_super
(due to exclusion on s_umount), we have to care only about filesystems that
touch lock_super() on their own.  Out of those ext3, ext4, hpfs, sysv and ufs
do need it; fat doesn't since its ->remount_fs() only accesses assign-once
data (basically, it's "we have no atime on directories and only have atime on
files for vfat; force nodiratime and possibly noatime into *flags").

Christoph Hellwig 6cfd014842 push BKL down into ->put_super
Move BKL into ->put_super from the only caller.  A couple of
filesystems had trivial enough ->put_super (only kfree and NULLing of
s_fs_info + stuff in there) to not get any locking: coda, cramfs, efs,
hugetlbfs, omfs, qnx4, shmem, all others got the full treatment.  Most
of them probably don't need it, but I'd rather sort that out individually.
Preferably after all the other BKL pushdowns in that area.

removed since we don't do lock_super() at all in generic_shutdown_super()

Christoph Hellwig 8c85e12512 remove ->write_super call in generic_shutdown_super
We just did a full fs writeout using sync_filesystem before, and if
that's not enough for the filesystem it can perform it's own writeout
in ->put_super, which many filesystems already do.

Move a call to foofs_write_super into every foofs_put_super for now to
guarantee identical behaviour until it's cleaned up by the individual
filesystem maintainers.

Exceptions:

 - affs already has identical copy & pasted code at the beginning of
   affs_put_super so no need to do it twice.
 - xfs does the right thing without it and I have changes pending for
   the xfs tree touching this are so I don't really need conflicts
   here..

Steven Whitehouse a447c09324 vfs: Use const for kernel parser table
This is a much better version of a previous patch to make the parser
tables constant. Rather than changing the typedef, we put the "const" in
all the various places where its required, allowing the __initconst
exception for nfsroot which was the cause of the previous trouble.

This was posted for review some time ago and I believe its been in -mm
since then.

Kmem cache passed to constructor is only needed for constructors that are
themselves multiplexeres.  Nobody uses this "feature", nor does anybody uses
passed kmem cache in non-trivial way, so pass only pointer to object.

Non-trivial places are:
	arch/powerpc/mm/init_64.c
	arch/powerpc/mm/hugetlbpage.c

This is flag day, yes.

Jan Kara 74abb9890d quota: move function-macros from quota.h to quotaops.h
Move declarations of some macros, which should be in fact functions to
quotaops.h.  This way they can be later converted to inline functions
because we can now use declarations from quota.h.  Also add necessary

Mike Frysinger e542059884 drop linux/ufs_fs.h from userspace export and relocate it to fs/ufs/ufs_fs.h
Per previous discussions about cleaning up ufs_fs.h, people just want
this straight up dropped from userspace export.  The only remaining
consumer (silo) has been fixed a while ago to not rely on this header.
This allows use to move it completely from include/linux/ to fs/ufs/
seeing as how the only in-kernel consumer is fs/ufs/.

Evgeniy Dushistov 90b315af12 ufs: fix symlink creation on ufs2

David Howells b55c460da6 iget: stop UFS from using iget() and read_inode()
Stop the UFS filesystem from using iget() and read_inode().  Replace
ufs_read_inode() with ufs_iget(), and call that instead of iget().  ufs_iget()
then uses iget_locked() directly and returns a proper error code instead of an
inode in the event of an error.

ufs_fill_super() returns any error incurred when getting the root inode
instead of EINVAL.

Evgeniy Dushistov 0c664f9742 ufs: fix nexstep dir block size
This patch fixes regression, introduced since 2.6.16.  NextStep variant of
UFS as OpenStep uses directory block size equals to 1024.  Without this
change, ufs_check_page fails in many cases.

previously cleanly unmounted, if (flags & UFS_ST_MASK) == UFS_ST_44BSD or
UFS_ST_OLD.  This looks like an inadvertent bug that slipped in due to
parantheses in the compound conditional to me, especially given that
ufs_get_fs_state() handles the UFS_ST_44BSD case perfectly well.  So, let's
fix the compound condition appropriately.

I made little modifications: move also ufs debug macros and

Mark Fortescue 252e211e90 Add in SunOS 4.1.x compatible mode for UFS
Add in support for SunOS 4.1.x flavor of BSD 4.2 UFS filing system Macros have
been put in to alow suport for the old static table Cylinder Groups but this
implementation does not use them yet.

This also fixes Solaris UFS filing system access by disabling fast symbolic
links as Sun's version of UFS does not support on-disk fast symbolic links.

Tested by:
  Ppartitioning a new disk using SunOS 4.1.1, creating a UFS filing system on
  one of the partitions and writing some files to the filing system.
  Using Linux-2.6.22 (patched) to read the files and then write a shed load of
  files to the UFS partition.
  Using SunOS 4.1.1 to verify the filing system is OK and to check the files.
The test host is a sun4c SS1 Clone.

Christoph Lameter 4ba9b9d0ba Slab API: remove useless ctor parameter and reorder parameters
Slab constructors currently have a flags parameter that is never used.  And
the order of the arguments is opposite to other slab functions.  The object
pointer is placed before the kmem_cache pointer.

Convert

        ctor(void *object, struct kmem_cache *s, unsigned long flags)

to

        ctor(struct kmem_cache *s, void *object)

throughout the kernel

Evgeniy Dushistov f9b7cba1b8 ufs: fix sun state
Different types of ufs hold state in different places, to hide complexity
of this, there is ufs_get_fs_state, it returns state according to
"UFS_SB(sb)->s_flags", but during mount ufs_get_fs_state is called, before
setting s_flags, this cause message for ufs types like sun ufs: "fs need
fsck", and remount in readonly state.

Paul Mundt 20c2df83d2 mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's
c59def9f22 change. They've been
BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them
either.

This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create()
completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were
about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves,
or the documentation references).

Christoph Lameter 50953fe9e0 slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flag
I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL.  It is only supported by
SLAB.

I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed
to verify that the state is the constructor state again?  The callback is
performed before each freeing of an object.

I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually
before the free.  That also places the check near the code object
manipulation of the object.

Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was
compiled with SLAB debugging on.  If there would be code in a constructor
handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on
SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code.  But there is no such code
in the kernel.  I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real
use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the
same effect (i.e.  add debug code before kfree).

There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be
clear in fs inode caches.  Remove the pointless checks (they would even be
pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.

This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support.  Remove the check for
unimplemented flags from SLUB.

Evgeniy Dushistov cbcae39fa1 [PATCH] ufs2 write: mount as rw
These series of patches add UFS2 write-support.  UFS2 - is default file system
for recent versions of FreeBSD.

The main differences from UFS1 from write support point of view
are:
1)Not all inodes are allocated during formatation of disk.
2)All meta-data(pointer to data blocks) are 64bit(in UFS1 they
are 32bit).

So patch series consist of
1)make possible mount UFS2 in read-write mode
2)code to write ufs2 inodes and code to initialize inodes chunks.
3)work with 64bit meta-data

I made simple testing like create/deleting/writing/reading/truncating, also I
ran fsx-linux and untar and build kernel on UFS1 and UFS2, after that FreeBSD
fsck do not find any errors in fs.

This patch makes possible to mount ufs2 "rw", and updates UFS2 documentation:
remove note about bug(it fixed by reallocate blocks on the fly patch) and add
me in the list of people who want receive bug reports.
