Michael S. Tsirkin d081107867 mm/gup.c: document return value
__get_user_pages_fast handles errors differently from
get_user_pages_fast: the former always returns the number of pages
pinned, the later might return a negative error code.

Kees Cook 8f2af155b5 exec: pass stack rlimit into mm layout functions
Patch series "exec: Pin stack limit during exec".

Attempts to solve problems with the stack limit changing during exec
continue to be frustrated[1][2]. In addition to the specific issues
around the Stack Clash family of flaws, Andy Lutomirski pointed out[3]
other places during exec where the stack limit is used and is assumed to
be unchanging. Given the many places it gets used and the fact that it
can be manipulated/raced via setrlimit() and prlimit(), I think the only
way to handle this is to move away from the "current" view of the stack
limit and instead attach it to the bprm, and plumb this down into the
functions that need to know the stack limits. This series implements
the approach.

[1] 04e35f4495 ("exec: avoid RLIMIT_STACK races with prlimit()")
[2] 779f4e1c6c ("Revert "exec: avoid RLIMIT_STACK races with prlimit()"")
[3] to security@kernel.org, "Subject: existing rlimit races?"

This patch (of 3):

Since it is possible that the stack rlimit can change externally during
exec (either via another thread calling setrlimit() or another process
calling prlimit()), provide a way to pass the rlimit down into the
per-architecture mm layout functions so that the rlimit can stay in the
bprm structure instead of sitting in the signal structure until exec is
finalized.

Masahiro Yamada 54a702f705 kbuild: mark $(targets) as .SECONDARY and remove .PRECIOUS markers
GNU Make automatically deletes intermediate files that are updated
in a chain of pattern rules.

Example 1) %.dtb.o <- %.dtb.S <- %.dtb <- %.dts
Example 2) %.o <- %.c <- %.c_shipped

A couple of makefiles mark such targets as .PRECIOUS to prevent Make
from deleting them, but the correct way is to use .SECONDARY.

  .SECONDARY
Prerequisites of this special target are treated as intermediate
files but are never automatically deleted.

  .PRECIOUS
When make is interrupted during execution, it may delete the target
file it is updating if the file was modified since make started.
If you mark the file as precious, make will never delete the file
    if interrupted.

Both can avoid deletion of intermediate files, but the difference is
the behavior when Make is interrupted; .SECONDARY deletes the target,
but .PRECIOUS does not.

The use of .PRECIOUS is relatively rare since we do not want to keep
partially constructed (possibly corrupted) targets.

Another difference is that .PRECIOUS works with pattern rules whereas
.SECONDARY does not.

  .PRECIOUS: $(obj)/%.lex.c

works, but

  .SECONDARY: $(obj)/%.lex.c

has no effect. However, for the reason above, I do not want to use
.PRECIOUS which could cause obscure build breakage.

The targets specified as .SECONDARY must be explicit. $(targets)
contains all targets that need to include .*.cmd files. So, the
intermediates you want to keep are mostly in there. Therefore, mark
$(targets) as .SECONDARY. It means primary targets are also marked
as .SECONDARY, but I do not see any drawback for this.

I replaced some .SECONDARY / .PRECIOUS markers with 'targets'. This
will make Kbuild search for non-existing .*.cmd files, but this is
not a noticeable performance issue.

Randy Dunlap 514c603249 headers: untangle kmemleak.h from mm.h
Currently <linux/slab.h> #includes <linux/kmemleak.h> for no obvious
reason. It looks like it's only a convenience, so remove kmemleak.h
from slab.h and add <linux/kmemleak.h> to any users of kmemleak_* that
don't already #include it. Also remove <linux/kmemleak.h> from source
files that do not use it.

This is tested on i386 allmodconfig and x86_64 allmodconfig. It would
be good to run it through the 0day bot for other $ARCHes. I have
neither the horsepower nor the storage space for the other $ARCHes.

Update: This patch has been extensively build-tested by both the 0day
bot & kisskb/ozlabs build farms. Both of them reported 2 build failures
for which patches are included here (in v2).

[ slab.h is the second most used header file after module.h; kernel.h is
right there with slab.h. There could be some minor error in the
counting due to some #includes having comments after them and I didn't
  combine all of those. ]

Huang Ying cb9f753a37 mm: fix races between swapoff and flush dcache
Thanks to commit 4b3ef9daa4 ("mm/swap: split swap cache into 64MB
trunks"), after swapoff the address_space associated with the swap
device will be freed. So page_mapping() users which may touch the
address_space need some kind of mechanism to prevent the address_space
from being freed during accessing.

The dcache flushing functions (flush_dcache_page(), etc) in architecture
specific code may access the address_space of swap device for anonymous
pages in swap cache via page_mapping() function. But in some cases
there are no mechanisms to prevent the swap device from being swapoff,
for example,

  CPU1 CPU2
  __get_user_pages()			swapoff()
    flush_dcache_page()
      mapping = page_mapping()
        ...				  exit_swap_address_space()
        ... kvfree(spaces)
        mapping_mapped(mapping)

The address space may be accessed after being freed.

But from cachetlb.txt and Russell King, flush_dcache_page() only care
about file cache pages, for anonymous pages, flush_anon_page() should be
used. The implementation of flush_dcache_page() in all architectures
follows this too. They will check whether page_mapping() is NULL and
whether mapping_mapped() is true to determine whether to flush the
dcache immediately. And they will use interval tree (mapping->i_mmap)
to find all user space mappings. While mapping_mapped() and
mapping->i_mmap isn't used by anonymous pages in swap cache at all.

So, to fix the race between swapoff and flush dcache, __page_mapping()
is add to return the address_space for file cache pages and NULL
otherwise. All page_mapping() invoking in flush dcache functions are
replaced with page_mapping_file().

[akpm@linux-foundation.org: simplify page_mapping_file(), per Mike]

Linus Torvalds 642e7fd233 Merge branch 'syscalls-next' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brodo/linux
Pull removal of in-kernel calls to syscalls from Dominik Brodowski:
"System calls are interaction points between userspace and the kernel.
Therefore, system call functions such as sys_xyzzy() or
compat_sys_xyzzy() should only be called from userspace via the
syscall table, but not from elsewhere in the kernel.

At least on 64-bit x86, it will likely be a hard requirement from
v4.17 onwards to not call system call functions in the kernel: It is
better to use use a different calling convention for system calls
there, where struct pt_regs is decoded on-the-fly in a syscall wrapper
which then hands processing over to the actual syscall function. This
means that only those parameters which are actually needed for a
specific syscall are passed on during syscall entry, instead of
filling in six CPU registers with random user space content all the
time (which may cause serious trouble down the call chain). Those
x86-specific patches will be pushed through the x86 tree in the near
  future.

Moreover, rules on how data may be accessed may differ between kernel
data and user data. This is another reason why calling sys_xyzzy() is
generally a bad idea, and -- at most -- acceptable in arch-specific
  code.

This patchset removes all in-kernel calls to syscall functions in the
kernel with the exception of arch/. On top of this, it cleans up the
three places where many syscalls are referenced or prototyped, namely
  kernel/sys_ni.c, include/linux/syscalls.h and include/linux/compat.h"

Dominik Brodowski c7b95d5156 mm: add ksys_readahead() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_readahead()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the

meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it uses the
same calling convention as sys_readahead().

Bjorn Helgaas 3758a19111 sparc/PCI: Stop reserving System ROM and Video ROM in PCI space
Previously, pci_register_legacy_regions() reserved PCI address space under
every PCI host bridge for the System ROM and the Video ROM, but these
regions are not part of PCI address space.

Previously, pci_register_legacy_regions() reserved the following areas of
PCI address space under every PCI host bridge:

[bus 0xa0000-0xbffff] Video RAM area (VGA frame buffer)
  [bus 0xc0000-0xc7fff] Video ROM
  [bus 0xf0000-0xfffff] System ROM

It does need to reserve the [bus 0xa0000-0xbffff] region (at least if
there's a possibility of a VGA device below the bridge) because VGA devices
can respond to that even if they don't describe it with a BAR.

But the Video ROM and System ROM areas don't seem necessary because they
are not areas that legacy PCI devices respond to.

They appear to be copied from x86, where they describe areas of system
memory that depend on BIOS conventions. On x86, BIOS copies the option ROM
of the primary VGA device to RAM at 0xc0000, and the 0xf0000-0xfffff region
is reserved for the motherboard BIOS. Neither of these things applies to
sparc.

Stop reserving the System ROM and Video ROM regions in PCI space.

Khalid Aziz 74a0496748 sparc64: Add support for ADI (Application Data Integrity)
ADI is a new feature supported on SPARC M7 and newer processors to allow
hardware to catch rogue accesses to memory. ADI is supported for data
fetches only and not instruction fetches. An app can enable ADI on its
data pages, set version tags on them and use versioned addresses to
access the data pages. Upper bits of the address contain the version
tag. On M7 processors, upper four bits (bits 63-60) contain the version
tag. If a rogue app attempts to access ADI enabled data pages, its
access is blocked and processor generates an exception. Please see
Documentation/sparc/adi.txt for further details.

This patch extends mprotect to enable ADI (TSTATE.mcde), enable/disable
MCD (Memory Corruption Detection) on selected memory ranges, enable
TTE.mcd in PTEs, return ADI parameters to userspace and save/restore ADI
version tags on page swap out/in or migration. ADI is not enabled by
default for any task. A task must explicitly enable ADI on a memory
range and set version tag for ADI to be effective for the task.

will force the ADI tags to if it detects uncorrectable error in an ADI

Peter Zijlstra edb39592a5 perf: Fix sibling iteration
Mark noticed that the change to sibling_list changed some iteration

David S. Miller cfb61b5e3e sparc64: Fix regression in pmdp_invalidate().
pmdp_invalidate() was changed to update the pmd atomically
(to not lose dirty/access bits) and return the original pmd

However, in doing so, we lost a lot of the essential work that
set_pmd_at() does, namely to update hugepage mapping counts and
queuing up the batched TLB flush entry.

Thus we were not flushing entries out of the TLB when making

Fix this by abstracting the accounting work of set_pmd_at() out into a

It will move the ioremap_nocache out of the CONFIG_MMU ifdef. This means that
in order to suppress re-definition errors we need to remove the #define
in arch/sparc/include/asm/io_32.h. Also, the change adds a prototype for
ioremap where size is size_t and offset is phys_addr_t so fix that as well.

Arnd Bergmann 173a3efd3e bug.h: work around GCC PR82365 in BUG()
Looking at functions with large stack frames across all architectures
led me discovering that BUG() suffers from the same problem as
fortify_panic(), which I've added a workaround for already.

In short, variables that go out of scope by calling a noreturn function
or __builtin_unreachable() keep using stack space in functions
afterwards.

A workaround that was identified is to insert an empty assembler
statement just before calling the function that doesn't return. I'm
adding a macro "barrier_before_unreachable()" to document this, and
insert calls to that in all instances of BUG() that currently suffer
from this problem.

The files that saw the largest change from this had these frame sizes
before, and much less with my patch:

fs/ext4/inode.c:82:1: warning: the frame size of 1672 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
fs/ext4/namei.c:434:1: warning: the frame size of 904 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
fs/ext4/super.c:2279:1: warning: the frame size of 1160 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
fs/ext4/xattr.c:146:1: warning: the frame size of 1168 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
fs/f2fs/inode.c:152:1: warning: the frame size of 1424 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_core.c:1195:1: warning: the frame size of 1068 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_core.c:395:1: warning: the frame size of 1084 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_ftp.c:298:1: warning: the frame size of 928 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_ftp.c:418:1: warning: the frame size of 908 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
net/netfilter/ipvs/ip_vs_lblcr.c:718:1: warning: the frame size of 960 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]
drivers/net/xen-netback/netback.c:1500:1: warning: the frame size of 1088 bytes is larger than 800 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]

In case of ARC and CRIS, it turns out that the BUG() implementation
actually does return (or at least the compiler thinks it does),
resulting in lots of warnings about uninitialized variable use and
leaving noreturn functions, such as:

  block/cfq-iosched.c: In function 'cfq_async_queue_prio':
block/cfq-iosched.c:3804:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type]
  include/linux/dmaengine.h: In function 'dma_maxpq':
include/linux/dmaengine.h:1123:1: error: control reaches end of non-void function [-Werror=return-type]

This makes them call __builtin_trap() instead, which should normally
dump the stack and kill the current process, like some of the other
architectures already do.

I tried adding barrier_before_unreachable() to panic() and
fortify_panic() as well, but that had very little effect, so I'm not
submitting that patch.

Yinghai Lu b4a304489e sparc/PCI: Support arbitrary host bridge address offset
Add support for arbitrary bus address offset. Previously we ignored the
child (PCI) address in the "ranges" property and assumed it was always
zero. That means every host bridge window mapped to PCI bus address zero,
e.g.,

pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x2000000000000-0x200007fffffff] (bus address [0x00000000-0x7fffffff])

But some systems have host bridge windows with non-zero child addresses, so
parse the child address and compute the offset between the parent (CPU) and
child (PCI) addresses. This allows windows like these:

  /pci@305: PCI MEM [mem 0x2000000100000-0x200007effffff] offset 2000000000000
pci_sun4v f02ae7f8: PCI host bridge to bus 0000:00
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x2000000100000-0x200007effffff] (bus address [0x00100000-0x7effffff])
