There's no need to add a space at the end of line.
Moreover, it can make problems in some projects that
store the help output into a file (and run couple of
tests based on that) and have space at EOL forbidden.

This will create a new QOM object in the '/objects' path. Note that properties
are set in order which allows for simple objects to be initialized entirely
with this option and then realized.
This option is roughly equivalent to -device but for things that are not
devices.

This patch will allow the user to include the domain-search option in
replies from the built-in DHCP server. The domain suffixes can be
specified by adding dnssearch= entries to the "-net user" parameter.

This option can be used for passing file descriptors on the
command line. It mirrors the existing add-fd QMP command which
allows an fd to be passed to QEMU via SCM_RIGHTS and added to an
fd set.
This can be combined with commands such as -drive to link file
descriptors in an fd set to a drive:
qemu-kvm -add-fd fd=3,set=2,opaque="rdwr:/path/to/file"
-add-fd fd=4,set=2,opaque="rdonly:/path/to/file"
-drive file=/dev/fdset/2,index=0,media=disk
This example adds dups of fds 3 and 4, and the accompanying opaque
strings to the fd set with ID=2. qemu_open() already knows how
to handle a filename of this format. qemu_open() searches the
corresponding fd set for an fd and when it finds a match, QEMU
goes on to use a dup of that fd just like it would have used an
fd that it opened itself.

Update the -help output and documentation so that it recommends
'help' rather than '?' for the various "list valid values for this
option" cases. '?' is deprecated (as it can fail confusingly if
not quoted), so it's better to steer users towards 'help'. ('?'
still works, for backwards compatibility.)
This is the -help option part of the change otherwise done in
commit c8057f9, since we are now past release 1.2 and free to
change our help text without worrying about breaking libvirt.

Added an option to let qemu transfer a configuration file to bios,
"etc/boot-fail-wait", which could be specified by command
-boot reboot-timeout=T
T have a max value of 0xffff, unit is ms.
With this option, guest will wait for a given time if not find
bootabled device, then reboot. If reboot-timeout is '-1', guest
will not reboot, qemu passes '-1' to bios by default.
This feature need the new seabios's support.
Seabios pulls the value from the fwcfg "file" interface, this
interface is used because SeaBIOS needs a reliable way of
obtaining a name, value size, and value. It in no way requires
that there be a real file on the user's host machine.

The seamless-migration flag is required in order to identify
whether libvirt supports the new QEVENT_SPICE_MIGRATE_COMPLETED or not
(by default the flag is off).
New libvirt versions that wait for QEVENT_SPICE_MIGRATE_COMPLETED should turn on this flag.
When this flag is off, spice fallbacks to its old migration method, which
can result in data loss.

This patch provides a way to optionally suppress spurious interrupts,
as a workaround for systems described below:
Some old operating systems do not handle spurious interrupts well,
and qemu tends to generate them significantly more often than
real hardware.
Examples:
- Microport UNIX System V/386 v 2.1 (ca 1987)
(The main problem I'm fixing: Without this patch, it panics
sporadically when accessing the hard disk.)
- AT&T UNIX System V/386 Release 4.0 Version 2.1a (ca 1991)

This patch adds some optional compatibility hacks (default
disabled) to allow Microport UNIX to function under qemu.
I've tried to structure it to be easy to add more hacks for other
old CGA programs, if anyone ever needs them.
Microport UNIX System V/386 v 2.1 (ca 1987) tries to program
the CGA registers directly with neither the assistance of BIOS, nor
with proper handling of EGA/VGA-only registers. Note that it didn't
work on real VGA hardware, either (although in that case, the most
obvious problems seemed to be out-of-range hsync and/or vsync
signalling, rather than the issues in this patch).
Eventually real MDA and/or CGA support might provide an alternative to
this patch, although a hybrid approach like this patch might still
be useful in marginal cases.

Add a new '[,dump-guest-core=on|off]' option to the '-machine' option. When
'dump-guest-core=off' is specified, guest memory is omitted from the core dump.
The default behavior continues to be to include guest memory when a core dump is
triggered. In my testing, this brought the core dump size down from 384MB to 6MB
on a 2GB guest.
Is anything additional required to preserve this setting for migration or
savevm? I don't believe so.

This patch updates the iscsi layer to automatically pick a 'unique'
initiator-name based on the name of the vm in case the user has not set
an explicit iqn-name to use.
Create a new function qemu_get_vm_name() that returns the name of the VM,
if specified.
This way we can thus create default names to use as the initiator name
based on the guest session.
If the VM is not named via the '-name' command line argument, the iscsi
initiator-name used wiull simply be
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm
If a name for the VM was specified with the '-name' option, iscsi will
use a default initiatorname of
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm:<name>
These names are just the default iscsi initiator name that qemu will
generate/use only when the user has not set an explicit initiator name
via the commandlines or config files.

FIPS 140-2 requires disabling certain ciphers, including DES, which is used
by VNC to obscure passwords when they are sent over the network. The
solution for FIPS users is to disable the use of VNC password auth when the
host system is operating in FIPS compliance mode and the user has specified
'-enable-fips' on the QEMU command line.
This patch causes QEMU to emit a message to stderr when the host system is
running in FIPS mode and a VNC password was specified on the commend line.
If the system is not running in FIPS mode, or is running in FIPS mode but
VNC password authentication was not requested, QEMU operates normally.

For command line options which permit '?' meaning 'please list the
permitted values', add support for 'help' as a synonym, by abstracting
the check out into a helper function.
This change means that in some cases where we were being lazy in
our string parsing, "?junk" will now be rejected as an invalid option
rather than being (undocumentedly) treated the same way as "?".
Update the documentation to use 'help' rather than '?', since '?'
is a shell metacharacter and thus prone to fail confusingly if there
is a single character filename in the current working directory and
the '?' has not been escaped. It's therefore better to steer users
towards 'help', though '?' is retained for backwards compatibility.
We do not, however, update the output of the system emulator's -help
(or any documentation autogenerated from the qemu-options.hx which
is the source of the -help text) because libvirt parses our -help
output and will break. At a later date when QEMU provides a better
interface so libvirt can avoid having to do this, we can update the
-help text too.

When using guestfwd=, Qemu only connects the virtual server's TCP port
to a single chardev. This is useless in most cases, as we usually want
to have more than a single connection from the guest to the outside world.
This patch adds a new cmd: target to guestfwd= that allows for execution
of a command on every TCP connection. This leverages the same code as
the -smb parameter, just that here the command is user defined.

The executable name qemu was replaced some time ago by qemu-system-i386.
Fix all examples accordingly.
Some examples will only work with qemu-system-i386 or qemu-system-x86_64
for obvious reasons ("dos.img").
To keep things simple, I did not vary the executable name.
Place holders like qemu-system-TARGET were also only used once
in the enhanced description for QEMU launches using Wine.

The idea behind qtest is pretty simple. Instead of executing a CPU via TCG or
KVM, rely on an external process to send events to the device model that the CPU
would normally generate.
qtest presents itself as an accelerator. In addition, a new option is added to
establish a qtest server (-qtest) that takes a character device. This is what
allows the external process to send CPU events to the device model.
qtest uses a simple line based protocol to send the events. Documentation of
that protocol is in qtest.c.
I considered reusing the monitor for this job. Adding interrupts would be a bit
difficult. In addition, logging would also be difficult.
qtest has extensive logging support. All protocol commands are logged with
time stamps using a new command line option (-qtest-log). Logging is important
since ultimately, this is a feature for debugging.

VNC clients send a shared flag in the client init message. Up to now
qemu completely ignores this. This patch implements shared flag
handling. It comes with three policies: By default qemu behaves as one
would expect: Asking for a exclusive access grants exclusive access to
the client connecting. There is also a desktop sharing mode which
disallows exclusive connects (so one forgetting -shared wouldn't drop
everybody else) and a compatibility mode which mimics the traditional
(but non-conforming) qemu behavior.

initiator-name to use when logging in to the target,
which type of header-digest to negotiate with the target
and username and password for CHAP authentication.
This allows specifying a initiator-name either from the command line
-iscsi initiator-name=iqn.2004-01.com.example:test
or from a configuration file included with -readconfig
[iscsi]

Introduce the KVM-specific machine option kvm_shadow_mem. It allows to
set a custom shadow MMU size for the virtual machine. This is useful for
stress testing e.g.
Only x86 supports this for now, but it is in principle a generic
concept for all targets with shadow MMUs.

The most common use of -net tap is to connect a tap device to a bridge. This
requires the use of a script and running qemu as root in order to allocate a
tap device to pass to the script.
This model is great for portability and flexibility but it's incredibly
difficult to eliminate the need to run qemu as root. The only really viable
mechanism is to use tunctl to create a tap device, attach it to a bridge as
root, and then hand that tap device to qemu. The problem with this mechanism
is that it requires administrator intervention whenever a user wants to create
a guest.
By essentially writing a helper that implements the most common qemu-ifup
script that can be safely given cap_net_admin, we can dramatically simplify
things for non-privileged users. We still support existing -net tap options
as a mechanism for advanced users and backwards compatibility.
Currently, this is very Linux centric but there's really no reason why it
couldn't be extended for other Unixes.
A typical invocation would be similar to one of the following:

The default bridge that we attach to is br0. The thinking is that a distro
could preconfigure such an interface to allow out-of-the-box bridged networking.
Alternatively, if a user wants to use a different bridge, a typical invocation

This enable us to do passthrough equivalent security model on NFS directory.
NFS server mostly do root squashing and don't support xattr. Hence we cannot
use 'passthrough' or 'mapped' security model
Also added "mapped-xattr" security to indicate earlier "mapped" security model
Older name is still supported.
POSIX rules regarding ctime update on chmod are not followed by this security model.

Add option to use named socket for communicating between proxy helper
and qemu proxy FS. Access to socket can be given by using command line
options -u and -g.

This is less confusing for users and also for other programs that
consume the help output.
The options affected are:
-g and -prom-env only displayed on PPC or SPARC
-win2k-hack, -rtc-td-hack, -no-fd-bootchk, -no-acpi, -no-hpet,
-acpitable, -smbios only displayed on i386
-semihosting only displayed on ARM, M68K or XTENSA
-old-param only displayed on ARM

This patch adds the -drive copy-on-read=on|off command-line option:
copy-on-read=on|off
copy-on-read is "on" or "off" and enables whether to copy read backing
file sectors into the image file. Copy-on-read avoids accessing the
same backing file sectors repeatedly and is useful when the backing
file is over a slow network. By default copy-on-read is off.

This patch create a synthetic file system with mount tag
v_synth when -virtfs_synth command line option is specified
in qemu. The synthetic file system can be mounted in guest
using 9p using the below command line
mount -t 9p -oversion=9p2000.L,trans=virtio v_synth <mountpint>
Synthetic file system enabled different qemu subsystem to register
callbacks for read and write events from guest. The subsystem
can create directories and files in the synthetic file system as show
in ex below

A new fsdev parameter "readonly" is introduced to control accessing 9p export.
"readonly" can be used to specify the access type. By default "rw" access
is given to 9p export.

Preprocessor directives cannot be used in STEXI/ETEXI sections since
they are not passed through the preprocessor. The spicevmc chardev
option help currently uses #if, which is included verbatim in the man
page output.
Fix this by simply stating that spicevmc chardevs are available only in
builds with spice support.

Tensilica iss provides support for applications running in freestanding
environment through SIMCALL command. It is used by Tensilica libc to
access argc/argv, for file I/O, etc.
Note that simcalls that accept buffer addresses expect virtual addresses.

Allow overriding the location of Samba's smbd.
Pretty much every OS I look at has some means of
changing this path (patching) so lets just make
it easier for OS developers creating packages
and/or end users to override the location.

The "-trace events" argument can be used to provide a file with a list of trace
event names that will be enabled prior to starting execution, thus providing
early tracing.
This saves the user from manually toggling event states through the monitor
interface or whichever backend-specific interface.

This patch adds -drive cache=directsync for O_DIRECT | O_SYNC host file
I/O with no disk write cache presented to the guest.
This mode is useful when guests may not be sending flushes when
appropriate and therefore leave data at risk in case of power failure.
When cache=directsync is used, write operations are only completed to
the guest when data is safely on disk.
This new mode is like cache=writethrough but it bypasses the host page
cache.

This patch almost rewrites acpi_table_add() function
(but still leaves it using old get_param_value() interface).
The result is that it's now possible to specify whole table
(together with a header) in an external file, instead of just
data portion, with a new file= parameter, but at the same time
it's still possible to specify header fields as before.
Now with the checkpatch.pl formatting fixes, thanks to
Stefan Hajnoczi for suggestions, with changes from
Isaku Yamahata, and with my further refinements.

Added options to let qemu transfer two configuration files to bios:
"bootsplash.bmp" and "etc/boot-menu-wait", which could be specified by command
-boot splash=P,splash-time=T
P is jpg/bmp file name or an absolute path, T have a max value of 0xffff, unit
is ms. With these two options, if user invoke qemu with menu=on option, then
a splash picture would be showed in a given time. For example:
qemu -boot menu=on,splash=/root/boot.bmp,splash-time=5000
would make boot.bmp shown as a brand with 5 seconds in the booting up process.
This feature need the new seabios's support, which could be got from git.

All other boolean arguments accept on|off - except for slirp's restrict.
Fix that while still accepting the formerly allowed yes|y|no|n, but
reject everything else. This avoids accidentally allowing external
connections because syntax errors were so far interpreted as
'restrict=no'.

-machine somehow suggests that it selects the machine, but it doesn't.
Fix that before this command is set in stone.
Actually, -machine should supersede -M and allow to introduce arbitrary
per-machine options to the command line. That will change the internal
realization again, but we will be able to keep the user interface
stable.

Add command line support for logging to a location other than /tmp/qemu.log.
With logging enabled (command line option -d), the log is written to
the hard-coded path /tmp/qemu.log. This patch adds support for writing
the log to a different location by passing the -D option.

Turn on SASL support by appending "sasl" to the spice arguments, which
requires that the client use SASL to authenticate with the spice. The
exact choice of authentication method used is controlled from the
system / user's SASL configuration file for the 'qemu' service. This
is typically found in /etc/sasl2/qemu.conf. If running QEMU as an
unprivileged user, an environment variable SASL_CONF_PATH can be used
to make it search alternate locations for the service config. While
some SASL auth methods can also provide data encryption (eg GSSAPI),
it is recommended that SASL always be combined with the 'tls' and
'x509' settings to enable use of SSL and server certificates. This
ensures a data encryption preventing compromise of authentication
credentials.
It requires support from spice 0.8.1.

Some people want to be able disable spice's guest <-> client copy paste support
because of security considerations.

Phillip Merensky reported that the special keys (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-f for full
screen) did not work correctly if -alt-grab is used.

Review of ui/sdl.c:sdl_refresh indicates that this is the intended behaviour,
so we should update the documentation to match the actual behaviour, as
suggested by Phillip in the bug report.

This option gives the ability to switch one "accelerator" like kvm, xen
or the default one tcg. We can specify more than one accelerator by
separate them by a colon. QEMU will try each one and use the first whose
works.
So,
./qemu -machine accel=xen:kvm:tcg
which would try Xen support first, then KVM and finally TCG if none of
the other works.
By default, QEMU will use TCG. But we can specify another default in the
global configuration file.

New option -display none. This option differs from -nographic by not
trying to take control of stdio etc. but instead behaves as if a
graphics display is enabled, except that it doesn't show one.

When MSI is off, each interrupt needs to be bounced through the io
thread when it's set/cleared, so vhost-net causes more context switches and
higher CPU utilization than userspace virtio which handles networking in
the same thread.
We'll need to fix this by adding level irq support in kvm irqfd,
for now disable vhost-net in these configurations.
Added a vhostforce flag to force vhost-net back on.

With current sndbuf default value, a blocked
target guest can prevent another guest from
transmitting any packets. While current
sndbuf value (1M) is reported to help some
UDP based workloads, the default should
be safe (0).

Adding a chardev backend for spice, where spice determines what
to do with it based on the name attribute given during chardev creation.
For usage by spice vdagent in conjunction with a properly named
virtio-serial device, and future smartcard channel usage.

qxl is a paravirtual graphics card. The qxl device is the bridge
between the guest and the spice server (aka libspice-server). The
spice server will send the rendering commands to the spice client, which
will actually render them.
The spice server is also able to render locally, which is done in case
the guest wants read something from video memory. Local rendering is
also used to support display over vnc and sdl.
qxl is activated using "-vga qxl". qxl supports multihead, additional
cards can be added via '-device qxl".

Add an option to specify the host IP to send multicast packets from,
when using a multicast socket for networking. The option takes an IP
address and sets the IP_MULTICAST_IF socket option, which causes the
packets to use that IP's interface as an egress.
This is useful if the host machine has several interfaces with several
virtual networks across disparate interfaces.

Add -spice command line switch. Has support setting passwd and port for
now. With this patch applied the spice client can successfully connect
to qemu. You can't do anything useful yet though.
This patch adds an optional command line switch '-trace' to specify the
filename to write traces to, when qemu starts.
Eg, If compiled with the 'simple' trace backend,
[temp@system]$ qemu -trace FILENAME IMAGE
Allows the binary traces to be written to FILENAME instead of the option
set at config-time.

This is equivalent to SM_PASSTHROUGH security model.
The only exception is, failure of privilige operation like chown
are ignored. This makes a passthrough like security model usable
for people who runs kvm as non root

Libvirt parses qemu help output to determine qemu features. In particular
it probes for the following: "cache=writethrough|writeback|none". The
addition of the unsafe cache mode was inserted within this string, as
opposed to being added to the end, which impacted libvirt's probe.
Unbreak libvirt by keeping the existing cache modes intact and add
unsafe to the end.
This problem only manifests itself if a caching mode is explicitly
specified in the libvirt xml, in which case older syntax for caching is
passed to qemu, which it no longer understands.

The new option is:
-fsdev fstype,id=myid,path=/share_path/,security_model=[mapped|passthrough]
-virtfs fstype,path=/share_path/,security_model=[mapped|passthrough],mnt_tag=tag
In the case of mapped security model, files are created with QEMU user
credentials and the client-user's credentials are saved in extended attributes.
Whereas in the case of passthrough security model, files on the
filesystem are directly created with client-user's credentials.

When using -snapshot we don't care about data integrity of the cow file
at all, so let's disable flushing there and squeeze out the last drop
of performance we could possibly get.

Usually the guest can tell the host to flush data to disk. In some cases we
don't want to flush though, but try to keep everything in cache.
So let's add a new cache value to -drive that allows us to set the cache
policy to most aggressive, disabling flushes. We call this mode "unsafe",
as guest data is not guaranteed to survive host crashes anymore.
This patch also adds a noop function for aio, so we can do nothing in AIO
fashion.

the guest and the host is as follows:

This patch provides a syntactic short-cut to achieve the same as follows:
#qemu -virtfs fstype,path=path/to/share,mount_tag=tag
This will be internally expanded as:

-device virtio-9p-pci,fsdev=tag,mount_tag=tag \

system specific information.
The option will currently hold the following attributes:

where
fstype: Type of the file system.
id: Identifier used to refer to this fsdev

This adds vhost binary option to tap, to enable vhost net accelerator.
Default is off for now, we'll be able to make default on long term
when we know it's stable.
vhostfd option can be used by management, to pass in the fd. Assigning
vhostfd implies vhost=on.

Move target specific functions and RAM handling to arch_init.c.
Add a flag to QEMUOptions structure to indicate for which
architectures the option is allowed, check the flag
in run time and remove conditional code in option handling.
Now that no target dependencies remain, compile vl.c only once
for all targets.

Some more command line options had entries for command line help,
but documentation for texi and derived formats (man, html, info)
was missing.
For conditional options, the texi documentation was added
unconditionally.
This seems reasonable because typically man pages are
shared, and html users expect to see one documentation
(not several nearly identical documents for the different
systems).

A new option, -nodefconfig is introduced to prevent loading from the default
config location. Otherwise, two configuration files will be searched for,
qemu.conf and target-<TARGET_NAME>.conf.
To ensure that the default configuration is overridden by a user specified
config, we introduce a two stage option parsing mechanism.

This commit converts the virtio-console device to create a new
virtio-serial bus that can host console and generic serial ports. The
file hosting this code is now called virtio-serial-bus.c.
The virtio console is now a very simple qdev device that sits on the
virtio-serial-bus and communicates between the bus and qemu's chardevs.
This commit also includes a few changes to the virtio backing code for
pci and s390 to spawn the virtio-serial bus.
As a result of the qdev conversion, we get rid of a lot of legacy code.
The old-style way of instantiating a virtio console using
-virtioconsole ...
is maintained, but the new, preferred way is to use
-device virtio-serial -device virtconsole,chardev=...
With this commit, multiple devices as well as multiple ports with a
single device can be supported.
For multiple ports support, each port gets an IO vq pair. Since the
guest needs to know in advance how many vqs a particular device will
need, we have to set this number as a property of the virtio-serial
device and also as a config option.
In addition, we also spawn a pair of control IO vqs. This is an internal
channel meant for guest-host communication for things like port
open/close, sending port properties over to the guest, etc.
This commit is a part of a series of other commits to get the full
implementation of multiport support. Future commits will add other
support as well as ride on the savevm version that we bump up here.

-writeconfig had entries for command line help, but
documentation for texi and derived formats (man, html, info)
was missing.
This also required moving "@end table" to the end of
qemu-options.hx again.

Add generic support for debugging consoles (simple I/O ports which
when written to cause debugging output to be written to a target.)
The current implementation matches Bochs' port 0xe9, allowing the same
debugging code to be used for both Bochs and Qemu.
There is no vm state associated with the debugging port, simply
because it has none -- the entire interface is a single, stateless,
write-only port.
Most of the code was cribbed from the serial port driver.
v2: removed non-ISA variants (they can be introduced when/if someone
wants them, using code from the serial port); added configurable
readback (Bochs returns 0xe9 on a read from this register, mimic that
by default) This retains the apparently somewhat controversial user
friendly option, however.
v3: reimplemented the user friendly option as a synthetic option
("-debugcon foo" basically ends up being a parser-level shorthand for
"-chardev stdio,id=debugcon -device isa-debugcon,chardev=debugcon") --
this dramatically reduced the complexity while keeping the same level
of user friendliness.
v4: spaces, not tabs.
v5: update to match current top of tree. Calling qemu_chr_open()
already during parsing no longer works; defer until we are parsing the
other console-like devices.

This patch adds infrastructure and command line option for setting
global defaults for device properties, i.e. you can for example use
-global virtio-blk-pci.vectors=0
to turn off msi by default for all virtio block devices. The config
file syntax is:
[global]
driver = "virtio-blk-pci"
property = "vectors"
value = "0"
This can also be used to set properties for devices which are not
created via -device but implicitly via machine init, i.e.
-global isa-fdc,driveA=<name>
This patch uses the mechanism which configures properties for the
compatibility machine types (pc-0.10 & friends). The command line
takes precedence over the machine type values.

This commit adds a flag called 'control' to the '-monitor'
command-line option. This flag enables control mode.
The syntax is:
qemu [...] -monitor control,<device>
Where <device> is a chardev (excluding 'vc', for obvious reasons).
For example:
$ qemu [...] -monitor control,tcp:localhost:4444,server
Will run QEMU in control mode, waiting for a client TCP connection
on localhost port 4444.
NOTE: I've tried using QemuOpts for this, but turns out that it
will try to parse the device part, which should be untouched.

Adds -readconfig and -writeconfig command line switches to read/write
QemuOpts from config file.
In theory you should be able to do:
qemu < machine config cmd line switches here > -writeconfig vm.cfg
qemu -readconfig vm.cfg
In practice it will not work. Not all command line switches are
converted to QemuOpts, so you'll have to keep the not-yet converted ones
on the second line. Also there might be bugs lurking which prevent even
the converted ones from working correctly.

This allows people to disable the IFF_VNET_HDR flag, e.g. for debugging
purposes or if they know they may migrate the guest to a machine without
IFF_VNET_HDR support.
It also allows making the lack of IFF_VNET_HDR support an error
condition, e.g. in the case where a guest is being migrated from a host
which does support it.

Currently, suboptions (i.e. something like file=file for -drive) are rendered
as @code, so we're losing any @var highlighting in the man pages.
Replace them by @option, so that you actually can see what is a placeholder and
what is meant verbatim.

Add support for -ctrl-grab to use the right-ctrl button to grab/release
the mouse in SDL.
The multi-button ctrl-alt and ctrl-alt-shift grab buttons present an
accessibility problem to users who cannot press more than one button
at a time.

Switch RTC emulations to the new host_clock instead of vm_clock by
default. This has the advantage that the emulated RTC will follow
automatically the host time while it might be tuned via NTP. vm_clock
can still be selected by passing '-rtc clock=vm' on the command line.
Note that some RTC emulations (at least M48T59) already use the host
time unconditionally while others (namely MC146818) do not. This patch
introduces the required infrastructure for selecting the base clock but
only converts MC146818 for now.

start switching chardevs to QemuOpts. This patch adds the
infrastructure and converts the null device.
The patch brings two new functions:
qemu_chr_open_opts()
same as qemu_chr_open(), but uses QemuOpts instead of a
option char string.
qemu_chr_parse_compat()
accepts a traditional chardev option string, returns the
corresponding QemuOpts instance, to handle backward
compatibility.
The patch also adds a new -chardev switch which can be used to create
named+unconnected chardevs, like this:
-chardev null,id=test
This uses the new qemu_chr_open_opts. Thus with this patch alone only
the null device works. The other devices will follow ...

Now that do have a nicer interface to work against we can add Linux native
AIO support. It's an extremly thing layer just setting up an iocb for
the io_submit system call in the submission path, and registering an
eventfd with the qemu poll handler to do complete the iocbs directly
from there.
This started out based on Anthony's earlier AIO patch, but after
estimated 42,000 rewrites and just as many build system changes
there's not much left of it.
To enable native kernel aio use the aio=native sub-command on the
drive command line. I have also added an option to qemu-io to
test the aio support without needing a guest.

The ne2k is an ancient card that performs pretty terribly under QEMU. In many
modern OSes, there is no longer drivers available for the ne2k.
Switch the default network adapter to e1000. This card is more widely
suppported and performs rather well under QEMU. There may be very old OSes
that had a ne2k driver but not an e1000 driver but I think this is likely the
exception.
I think the average user is better served with an e1000 vs ne2k.

kqemu introduces a number of restrictions on the i386 target. The worst is that
it prevents large memory from working in the default build.
Furthermore, kqemu is fundamentally flawed in a number of ways. It relies on
the TSC as a time source which will not be reliable on a multiple processor
system in userspace. Since most modern processors are multicore, this severely
limits the utility of kqemu.
kvm is a viable alternative for people looking to accelerate qemu and has the
benefit of being supported by the upstream Linux kernel. If someone can
implement work arounds to remove the restrictions introduced by kqemu, I'm
happy to avoid and/or revert this patch.
N.B. kqemu will still function in the 0.11 series but this patch removes it from
the 0.12 series.

One use case will be file for drives (no filename quoting issues), i.e.
-drive id=test,if=virtio
-set drive.test.file=/vmdisk/test-virtio.img
It will work for any other option (assuming handled by QemuOpts) though.

Set the Linux process name to the name argument specified with name. I find
this useful to see which guests are taking CPU time in top.
This doesn't affect ps, which checks argv[0], but rewriting the
environment uses much more code, so I only used this simple way.

On reflection, perhaps it does make sense to set a default value for
the sndbuf= tap parameter.
For best effect, sndbuf= should be set to just below the capacity of
the physical NIC.
Setting it higher will cause packets to be dropped before the limit
is hit. Setting it much lower will not cause any problems unless
you set it low enough such that the guest cannot queue up new packets
before the NIC has emptied its queue.
In Linux, txqueuelen=1000 by default for ethernet NICs. Given a 1500
byte MTU, 1Mb is a good choice for sndbuf.
If it turns out that txqueuelen is actually much lower than this, then
sndbuf is essentially disabled. In the event that txqueuelen is much
higher, it's unlikely that the NIC will be able to empty a 1Mb queue.

We want to do (at least) two things to the virtio-balloon device:
suppress it, and control its PCI address. Option -no-virtio-balloon
lets us do only the former. To get the latter, replace
-no-virtio-balloon with
-balloon none disable balloon device
-balloon virtio[,addr=str]
enable virtio balloon device (default)

Extend the hostfwd rule format so that the user can specify on which

With the internal IP configuration made more flexible, we can now
enhance the user interface. This patch adds a number of new options to
"-net user": net (address and mask), host, dhcpstart, dns and smbserver.
It also renames "redir" to "hostfwd" and "channel" to "guestfwd" in
order to (hopefully) clarify their meanings. The format of guestfwd is
extended so that the user can define not only the port but also the
virtual server's IP address the forwarding starts from.

So far a couple of slirp-related parameters were expressed via
stand-alone command line options. This it inconsistent and unintuitive.
Moreover, it prevents both dynamically reconfigured (host_net_add/
delete) and multi-instance slirp.
This patch refactors the configuration by turning -smb, -redir, -tftp
and -bootp as well as -net channel into options of "-net user". The old
stand-alone command line options are still processed, but no longer
advertised. This allows smooth migration of management applications to
to the new syntax and also the extension of that syntax later in this
series.

2.6.30 adds a new TUNSETSNDBUF ioctl() which allows a send buffer limit
for the tap device to be specified. When this limit is reached, a tap
write() will return EAGAIN and poll() will indicate the fd isn't
writable.
This allows people to tune their setups so as to avoid e.g. UDP packet
loss when the sending application in the guest out-runs the NIC in the
host.
There is no obviously sensible default setting - a suitable value
depends mostly on the capabilities of the physical NIC through which the
packets are being sent.
Also, note that when using a bridge with netfilter enabled, we currently
never get EAGAIN because netfilter causes the packet to be immediately
orphaned. Set /proc/sys/net/bridge/bridge nf-call-iptables to zero to
disable this behaviour.

Make drive_init() accept addr=, put the value into struct DriveInfo.
Use it in all the places that create virtio-blk-pci devices:
pc_init1(), bamboo_init(), mpc8544ds_init().
Don't support addr= in third argument of monitor command pci_add and
second argument of drive_add, because that clashes with their first
arguments. Admittedly unelegant.

Make net_client_init() accept addr=, put the value into struct
NICinfo. Use it in pci_nic_init(), and remove arguments bus and
devfn.
Don't support addr= in third argument of monitor command pci_add,
because that clashes with its first argument. Admittedly unelegant.
Machines "malta" and "r2d" have a default NIC with a well-known PCI
address. Deal with that the same way as the NIC model: make
pci_nic_init() take an optional default to be used when the user
doesn't specify one.

adds a -numa command line parameter and sets a QEMU global array with
the memory sizes. The CPU-to-node assignemnt is written into the
CPUState. If no specific values for memory and CPUs are given,
all resources will be split equally across all nodes.
This code currently support only up to 64 virtual CPUs.

This patch is derived from Tristan Gingold's patch. It adds a new VLAN
client type that writes all traffic on the VLAN it is attached to into a
pcap file. Such a file can then be analyzed offline with Wireshark or
tcpdump.
Besides rebasing and some minor cleanups, the major differences to the
original version are:
- support for enabling/disabling via the monitor (host_net_add/remove)
- no special ordering of VLAN client list, qemu_send_packet now takes
care of properly ordered packets
- 64k default capturing limit (I hate tcpdump's default)

Create a new -smbios option (x86-only) to allow binary SMBIOS entries
to be passed through to the BIOS or modify the default values of
individual fields of type 0 and 1 entries on the command line.
Binary SMBIOS entries can be generated as follows:
dmidecode -t 1 -u | grep $'^\t\t[^"]' | xargs -n1 | \
perl -lne 'printf "%c", hex($_)' > smbios_type_1.bin
These can then be passed to the BIOS using this switch:
-smbios file=smbios_type_1.bin
Command line generation supports the following syntax:
-smbios type=0[,vendor=str][,version=str][,date=str][,release=%d.%d]
-smbios type=1[,manufacturer=str][,product=str][,version=str][,serial=str]
[,uuid=$(uuidgen)][,sku=str][,family=str]
For instance, to add a serial number to the type 1 table:

Interface is extensible to support more fields/tables as needed.

Introduce a more canonical gdbstub configuration (system emulation only)
via the new switch '-gdb dev'. Keep '-s' as shorthand for
'-gdb tcp::1234'. Use the same syntax also for the corresponding monitor
command 'gdbserver'. Its default remains to listen on TCP port 1234.

Try to keep documentation about command line switches, -help text and
qemu_options table synchronized.
In true Qemu tradition, an include file is generated from single .hx file
containing all relevant information in one place. The include file is
parsed once for getting the enums, another time for getopt tables and
hird time for help messages. Texi documentation for the options is
generated from the same .hx file.
