This commit enables each CXL Type-3 device to contain one volatile
memory region and one persistent region.
Two new properties have been added to cxl-type3 device initialization:
[volatile-memdev] and [persistent-memdev]
The existing [memdev] property has been deprecated and will default the
memory region to a persistent memory region (although a user may assign
the region to a ram or file backed region). It cannot be used in
combination with the new [persistent-memdev] property.
Partitioning volatile memory from persistent memory is not yet supported.
Volatile memory is mapped at DPA(0x0), while Persistent memory is mapped
at DPA(vmem->size), per CXL Spec 8.2.9.8.2.0 - Get Partition Info.

Python 3.6 was EOL 2021-12-31. Newer versions of upstream libraries have
begun dropping support for this version and it is becoming more
cumbersome to support. Avocado-framework and qemu.qmp each have their
own reasons for wanting to drop Python 3.6, but won't until QEMU does.

Note: Our VM tests install 3.9 explicitly for FreeBSD and 3.10 for
NetBSD; the default for "python" or "python3" in FreeBSD is
3.9.16. NetBSD does not appear to have a default meta-package, but
offers several options, the lowest of which is 3.7.15. "python39"
appears to be a pre-requisite to one of the other packages we request in
tests/vm/netbsd. pip, ensurepip and other Python essentials are
currently only available for Python 3.10 for NetBSD.
CentOS and OpenSUSE support parallel installation of multiple Python
interpreters, and binaries in /usr/bin will always use Python 3.6. However,
the newly introduced support for virtual environments ensures that all build
steps that execute QEMU Python code use a single interpreter.
Since it is safe to under our supported platform policy, bump our
minimum supported version of Python to 3.7.

Add new -run-with option with an async-teardown=on|off parameter. It is
visible in the output of query-command-line-options QMP command, so it
can be discovered and used by libvirt.

In commit 5242876f37 we deprecated the dtb-kaslr-seed property of
the virt board, but forgot the "since n.n" tag in the documentation

This deprecation note first appeared in the 7.1 release, so

The 'singlestep' member of StatusInfo has never done what the QMP
documentation claims it does. What it actually reports is whether
TCG is working in "one guest instruction per translation block" mode.
We no longer need this field for the HMP 'info status' command, as
we've moved that information to 'info jit'. It seems unlikely that
anybody is monitoring the state of this obscure TCG setting via QMP,
especially since QMP provides no means for changing the setting. So
simply deprecate the field, without providing any replacement.
Until we do eventually delete the member, correct the misstatements
in the QAPI documentation about it.
If we do find that there are users for this, then the most likely way
we would provide replacement access to the information would be to
put the accelerator QOM object at a well-known path such as
/machine/accel, which could then be used with the existing qom-set
and qom-get commands.

The 'singlestep' HMP command is confusing, because it doesn't
actually have anything to do with single-stepping the CPU. What it
does do is force TCG emulation to put one guest instruction in each
TB, which can be useful in some situations.
Create a new HMP command 'one-insn-per-tb', so we can document that
'singlestep' is just a deprecated synonym for it, and eventually
perhaps drop it.
We aren't obliged to do deprecate-and-drop for HMP commands,
but it's easy enough to do so, so we do.

The commit made the wrong assumption that 64-bit distros are most
common these days on arm devices, but as Liviu Ionescu pointed out,
the recommended OS for the very popular Raspberry Pi boards is still
the 32-bit variant, and thus likely still used by a lot of people:

Thus it's likely still a little bit too early to put this host
environment on the deprecation list and we should wait a little

For running QEMU in system emulation mode, the user needs a rather
strong host system, i.e. not only an embedded low-frequency controller.
All recent beefy arm host machines should support 64-bit now, it's
unlikely that anybody is still seriously using QEMU on a 32-bit arm
CPU, so we deprecate the 32-bit arm hosts here to finally save use
some time and precious CI minutes.

For long-term distributions that release a new version only very
seldom, we limit the support to five years after the initial release.
Otherwise, we might need to support distros like openSUSE 15 for
up to 7 or even more years in total due to our "two more years
after the next major release" rule, which is just way too much to
handle in a project like QEMU that only has limited human resources.

Historically, the critical dependency for both building and running
QEMU has been the distro packages. Because QEMU is written in C and C's
package management has been tied to distros (at least if you do not want
to bundle libraries with the binary, otherwise I suppose you could use
something like conda or wrapdb), C dependencies of QEMU would target the
version that is shipped in relatively old but still commonly used distros.
For non-C libraries, however, the situation is different, as these
languages have their own package management tool (cpan, pip, gem, npm,
and so on). For some of these languages, the amount of dependencies
for even a simple program can easily balloon to the point that many
distros have given up on packaging non-C code. For this reason, it has
become increasingly normal for developers to download dependencies into
a self-contained local environment, instead of relying on distro packages.
Fortunately, this affects QEMU only at build time, as qemu.git does
not package non-C artifacts such as the qemu.qmp package; but still,
as we make more use of Python, we experience a clash between a support
policy that is written for the C world, and dependencies (both direct
and indirect) that increasingly do not care for the distro versions
and are quick at moving past Python runtime versions that are declared
end-of-life.
For example, Python 3.6 has been EOL'd since December 2021 and Meson 0.62
(released the following March) already dropped support for it. Yet,
Python 3.6 is the default version of the Python runtime for RHEL/CentOS
8 and SLE 15, respectively the penultimate and the most recent version
of two distros that QEMU would like to support. (It is also the version
used by Ubuntu 18.04, but QEMU stopped supporting it in April 2022).
There are good reasons to move forward with the deprecation of Python
3.6 in QEMU as well: completing the configure->meson switch (which
requires Meson 0.63), and making the QAPI generator fully typed (which
requires newer versions of not just mypy but also Python, due to PEP563).
Fortunately, these long-term support distros do include newer versions of
the Python runtime. However, these more recent runtimes only come with
a very small subset of the Python packages that the distro includes.
Because most dependencies are optional tests (avocado, mypy, flake8)
and Meson is bundled with QEMU, the most noticeably missing package is
Sphinx (and the readthedocs theme). There are four possibilities:
* we change the support policy and stop supporting CentOS 8 and SLE 15;
not a good idea since CentOS 8 is not an unreasonable distro for us to
want to continue to support
* we keep supporting Python 3.6 until CentOS 8 and SLE 15 stop being
supported. This is a possibility---but we may want to revise the support
policy anyway because SLE 16 has not even been released, so this would
mean delaying those desirable reasons for perhaps three years;
* we support Python 3.6 just for building documentation, i.e. we are
careful not to use Python 3.7+ features in our Sphinx extensions but are
free to use them elsewhere. Besides being more complicated to understand
for developers, this can be quite limiting; parts of the QAPI generator
run at sphinx-build time, which would exclude one of the areas which
would benefit from a newer version of the runtime;
* we only support Python 3.7+, which means CentOS 8 CI and users
have to either install Sphinx from pip or disable documentation.
This proposed update to the support policy chooses the last of these
possibilities. It does by modifying three aspects of the support
policy:
* it introduces different support periods for *native* vs. *non-native*
dependencies. Non-native dependencies are currently Python ones only,
and for simplicity the policy only mentions Python; however, the concept
generalizes to other languages with a well-known upstream package
manager, that users of older distributions can fetch dependencies from;
* it opens up the possibility of taking non-native dependencies from their
own package index instead of using the version in the distribution. The
wording right now is specific to dependencies that are only required at
build time. In the future we may have to refine it if, for example, parts
of QEMU will be written in Rust; in that case, crates would be handled
in a similar way to submodules and vendored in the release tarballs.
* it mentions specifically that optional build dependencies are excluded
from the platform policy. Tools such as mypy don't affect the ability
to build QEMU and move fast enough that distros cannot standardize on
a single version of them (for example RHEL9 does not package them at
all, nor does it run them at rpmbuild time). In other cases, such as
cross compilers, we have alternatives.
Right now, non-native dependencies have to be download manually by
running "pip" before "configure". In the future, it will be desirable
for configure to set up a virtual environment and download them in the
same way that it populates git submodules (but, in this case, without
vendoring them in the release tarballs).
Just like with submodules, this would make things easier for people
that can afford accessing the network in their build environment; the
option to populate the build environment manually would remain for
people whose build machines lack network access. The change to the
support policy neither requires nor forbids this future change.

The main reason to do this is to document our O_BINARY implementation
decision somewhere. However I've also moved some of the implementation
details out of qemu-options and added links between the two. As a
bonus I've highlighted the scary warnings about host access with the
appropriate RST tags.

It's becoming harder to maintain a cross-compiler to test this host
architecture as the old stable Debian 10 ("Buster") moved into LTS
which supports fewer architectures. For now:
- mark it's deprecation in the docs
- downgrade the containers to build TCG tests only
- drop the cross builds from our CI
Users with an appropriate toolchain and user-space can still take
their chances building it.

Let's use a more appropriate wording for this command line and config
file option. The old ones are still accepted for compatibility reasons,
but marked as deprecated now so that it could be removed in a future
version of QEMU.
This change is based on earlier patches from Philippe Mathieu-Daudé,
with the idea for the new option name suggested by BALATON Zoltan.
And while we're at it, replace the "?" in the help text with "help"
since that does not have the problem of conflicting with the wildcard
character of the shells.

Commit cf60ccc330 ("cutils: Introduce bundle mechanism") introduced
a Python script to populate a bundle directory using os.symlink() to
point to the binaries in the pc-bios directory of the source tree.
Commit 882084a04a ("datadir: Use bundle mechanism") removed previous
logic in pc-bios/meson.build to create a link/copy of pc-bios binaries
in the build tree so os.symlink() is the way to go.
However os.symlink() may fail [1] on Windows if an unprivileged Windows
user started the QEMU build process, which results in QEMU executables
generated in the build tree not able to load the default BIOS/firmware
images due to symbolic links not present in the bundle directory.
This commits updates the documentation by adding such caveats for users
who want to build QEMU on the Windows platform.

Developers often run QEMU without installing. The bundle mechanism
allows to look up files which should be present in installation even in
such a situation.
It is a general mechanism and can find any files in the installation
tree. The build tree will have a new directory, qemu-bundle, to
represent what files the installation tree would have for reference by
the executables.
Note that it abandons compatibility with Windows older than 8. The
extended support for the prior version, 7 ended more than 2 years ago,
and it is unlikely that someone would like to run the latest QEMU on
such an old system.

In 60592cfed2 ("hw/arm/virt: dt: add kaslr-seed property"), the
kaslr-seed property was added, but the equally as important rng-seed
property was forgotten about, which has identical semantics for a
similar purpose. This commit implements it in exactly the same way as
kaslr-seed. It then changes the name of the disabling option to reflect
that this has more to do with randomness vs determinism, rather than
something particular about kaslr.

We cannot provide auto-generated unique or persistent namespace
identifiers (EUI64, NGUID, UUID) easily. Since 6.1, namespaces have been
assigned a generated EUI64 of the form "52:54:00:<namespace counter>".
This is will be unique within a QEMU instance, but not globally.
Revert that this is assigned automatically and immediately deprecate the
compatibility parameter. Users can opt-in to this with the
`eui64-default=on` device parameter or set it explicitly with
`eui64=UINT64`.

Our support statement for Windows currently talks about "Vista / Server
2008" - which is related to the API of Windows, and this is not easy
to understand for the non-technical users. Additionally, glib sets the
_WIN32_WINNT macro to 0x0601 already, which indicates the Windows 7 API,
so QEMU effectively depends on the Windows 7 API, too.
Thus let's bump the _WIN32_WINNT setting in QEMU to the same level as
glib uses and adjust our support statement in the documentation to
something similar that we're using for Linux and the *BSD systems
(i.e. only the two most recent versions), which should hopefully be
easier to understand for the users now.
And since we're nowadays also compile-testing QEMU with MSYS2 on Windows
itself, I think we could mention this build environment here, too.

-audio is used like "-audio pa,model=sb16". It is almost as simple as
-soundhw, but it reuses the -audiodev parsing machinery and attaches an
audiodev to the newly-created device. The main 'feature' is that
it knows about adding the codec device for model=intel-hda, and adding
the audiodev to the codec device.
In the future, it could be extended to support default models or
builtin devices, just like -nic, or even a default backend. For now,
keep it simple.

Icelake, is the codename for Intel 3rd generation Xeon Scalable server
processors. There isn't ever client variants. This "Icelake-Client" CPU
model was added wrongly and imaginarily.
It has been deprecated since v5.2, now it's time to remove it completely
from code.

Like -set and -readconfig, it would not really be too hard to
extend -writeconfig to parsing mechanisms other than QemuOpts.
However, the uses of -writeconfig are substantially more
limited, as it is generally easier to write the configuration
by hand in the first place. In addition, -writeconfig does
not even try to detect cases where it prints incorrect
syntax (for example if values have a quote in them, since
qemu_config_parse does not support any kind of escaping.
Just remove it.

it is unlikely that many people still use the very old ones for live
migration. QEMU v1.7 has been released more than 8 years ago, so most
people should have updated their machines to a newer version in those

The SGX NUMA patches were merged into Qemu 7.0 release, we need
clarify detailed version history information and also change
some related comments, which make SGX related comments clearer.
The QMP command schema promises backwards compatibility as standard.
We temporarily restore "@section-size", which can avoid incompatible
API breakage. The "@section-size" will be deprecated in 7.2 version.

This option was just a wrapper around the -display ...,window-close=off
parameter, and the name "no-quit" is rather confusing compared to
"window-close" (since there are still other means to quit the emulator),

The PPC 405 CPU is a system-on-a-chip, so all 405 machines are very similar,
except for some external periphery. However, the periphery of the 'taihu'
machine is hardly emulated at all (e.g. neither the LCD nor the USB part had
been implemented), so there is not much value added by this board. The users
can use the 'ref405ep' machine to test their PPC405 code instead.

Configuring a drive with "if=none" is meant for creation of a backend
only, it should not get automatically assigned to a device frontend.
Use "if=pflash" for the One-Time-Programmable device instead (like
it is e.g. also done for the efuse device in hw/arm/xlnx-zcu102.c).
Since the old way of configuring the device has already been published
with the previous QEMU versions, we cannot remove this immediately, but
have to deprecate it and support it for at least two more releases.

While introducing a non-QemuOpts code path for device creation for JSON
-device, we noticed that QMP device_add doesn't check its input
correctly (accepting arguments that should have been rejected), and that
users may be relying on this behaviour (libvirt did until it was fixed
recently).
Let's use a deprecation period before we fix this bug in QEMU to avoid
nasty surprises for users.

Modern way is using blockdev-add + blockdev-backup, which provides a
lot more control on how target is opened.
As example of drive-backup problems consider the following:
User of drive-backup expects that target will be opened in the same
cache and aio mode as source. Corresponding logic is in
drive_backup_prepare(), where we take bs->open_flags of source.
It works rather bad if source was added by blockdev-add. Assume source
is qcow2 image. On blockdev-add we should specify aio and cache options
for file child of qcow2 node. What happens next:
drive_backup_prepare() looks at bs->open_flags of qcow2 source node.
But there no BDRV_O_NOCAHE neither BDRV_O_NATIVE_AIO: BDRV_O_NOCAHE is
places in bs->file->bs->open_flags, and BDRV_O_NATIVE_AIO is nowhere,
as file-posix parse options and simply set s->use_linux_aio.
The documentation is updated in a minimal way, so that drive-backup is
noted only as a deprecated command, and blockdev-backup used in most of
places.

-watchdog is the same as -device except that it is case insensitive (and it
allows only watchdog devices of course). Now that "-device help" can list
as such the available watchdog devices, we can deprecate it.
Note that even though -watchdog tries to be case insensitive, it fails
at that: "-watchdog i6300xyz" fails with "Unknown -watchdog device",
but "-watchdog i6300ESB" also fails (when the generated -device option
is processed) with an error "'i6300ESB' is not a valid device model name".
For this reason, the documentation update does not mention the case
insensitivity of -watchdog.

The next commit will add feature flags to enum members. There's a
problem, though: query-qmp-schema shows an enum type's members as an
array of member names (SchemaInfoEnum member @values). If it showed
an array of objects with a name member, we could simply add more
members to these objects. Since it's just strings, we can't.
I can see three ways to correct this design mistake:
1. Do it the way we should have done it, plus compatibility goo.
We want a ['SchemaInfoEnumMember'] member in SchemaInfoEnum. Since
changing @values would be a compatibility break, add a new member
@members instead.
@values is now redundant. In my testing, output of
qemu-system-x86_64's query-qmp-schema grows by 11% (18.5KiB).
We can deprecate @values now and drop it later. This will break
outmoded clients. Well-behaved clients such as libvirt are
expected to break cleanly.
2. Like 1, but omit "boring" elements of @member, and empty @member.
@values does not become redundant. @members augments it. Somewhat
cumbersome, but output of query-qmp-schema grows only as we make
enum members non-boring.
There is nothing to deprecate here.
3. Versioned query-qmp-schema.
query-qmp-schema provides either @values or @members. The QMP
client can select which version it wants. There is no redundant
output.
We can deprecate old versions and eventually drop them. This will
break outmoded clients. Breaking cleanly is easier than for 1.
While 1 and 2 operate within the common rules for compatible
evolution apply (section "Compatibility considerations" in
docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst), 3 bypasses them. Attractive when
operating within the rules is just too awkward. Not the case here.
This commit implements 1. Libvirt developers prefer it.
Deprecate @values in favour of @members. Since query-qmp-schema
compatibility is pretty fundamental for management applications, an
extended grace period is advised.

In the SMP configuration, we should either provide a topology
parameter with a reasonable value (greater than zero) or just
omit it and QEMU will compute the missing value.
The users shouldn't provide a configuration with any parameter
of it specified as zero (e.g. -smp 8,sockets=0) which could
possibly cause unexpected results in the -smp parsing. So we
deprecate this kind of configurations since 6.2 by adding the
explicit sanity check.

At this moment we only provide one event to report a hotunplug error,
MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR. As of Linux kernel 5.12 and QEMU 6.0.0, the pseries
machine is now able to report unplug errors for other device types, such
as CPUs.
Instead of creating a (device_type)_UNPLUG_ERROR for each new device,
create a generic DEVICE_UNPLUG_GUEST_ERROR event that can be used by all
guest side unplug errors in the future. This event has a similar API as
the existing DEVICE_DELETED event, always providing the QOM path of the
device and dev->id if there's any.
With this new generic event, MEM_UNPLUG_ERROR is now marked as deprecated.

Use a standard heading format for the index.rst file in a directory.
Using overlines makes it clear that individual documents can use e.g.
=== for chapter titles and --- for section titles, as suggested in the
Linux kernel guidelines[1]. They could do it anyway, because documents
included in a toctree are parsed separately and therefore are not tied
to the same conventions for headings. However, keeping some consistency is
useful since sometimes files are included from multiple places.

The alt_grab and ctrl_grab parameter of the -display sdl option prevent
the QAPIfication of the "sdl" part of the -display option, so we should
eventually remove them. And since this feature is also rather niche anyway,
we should not clutter the top-level option list with these, so let's
also deprecate the "-alt-grab" and the "-ctrl-grab" options while we're
at it.
Once the deprecation period of "alt_grab" and "ctrl_grab" is over, we
then can finally switch the -display sdl option to use QAPI internally,
too.

There is a mixture of "since/removed in X.Y" vs "since/removed in X.Y.Z"
in the subjects in deprecated.rst/removed-features.rst. It will be better
to use an unified format. It seems unlikely that we will ever deprecate
something in a stable release, and even more unlikely that we'll remove
something in one, so the short versions look like the thing we want to
standardize on.
So here we unify the subject format in deprecated.rst to "since X.Y", and
unify the subject format in removed-features.rst to "removed in X.Y".
