icount has become much slower after tcg_cpu_exec has stopped
using the BQL. There is also a latent bug that is masked by
the slowness.
The slowness happens because every occurrence of a QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL
timer now has to wake up the I/O thread and wait for it. The rendez-vous
is mediated by the BQL QemuMutex:
- handle_icount_deadline wakes up the I/O thread with BQL taken
- the I/O thread wakes up and waits on the BQL
- the VCPU thread releases the BQL a little later
- the I/O thread raises an interrupt, which calls qemu_cpu_kick
- the VCPU thread notices the interrupt, takes the BQL to
process it and waits on it
All this back and forth is extremely expensive, causing a 6 to 8-fold
slowdown when icount is turned on.
One may think that the issue is that the VCPU thread is too dependent
on the BQL, but then the latent bug comes in. I first tried removing
the BQL completely from the x86 cpu_exec, only to see everything break.
The only way to fix it (and make everything slow again) was to add a dummy
BQL lock/unlock pair.
This is because in -icount mode you really have to process the events
before the CPU restarts executing the next instruction. Therefore, this
series moves the processing of QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL timers straight in
the vCPU thread when running in icount mode.
The required changes include:
- make the timer notification callback wake up TCG's single vCPU thread
when run from another thread. By using async_run_on_cpu, the callback
can override all_cpu_threads_idle() when the CPU is halted.
- move handle_icount_deadline after qemu_tcg_wait_io_event, so that
the timer notification callback is invoked after the dummy work item
wakes up the vCPU thread
- make handle_icount_deadline run the timers instead of just waking the
I/O thread.
- stop processing the timers in the main loop

The cast is there because sigbus_handler is invoked via sigfd_handler.
But it feels just wrong to use struct qemu_signalfd_siginfo in the
prototype of a function that is passed to sigaction.
Instead, do a simple-minded conversion of qemu_signalfd_siginfo to
siginfo_t.

The patch enables handling atomic code in the guest. This should be
preferably done in cpu_handle_exception(), but the current assumptions
regarding when we can execute atomic sections cause a deadlock.
The current mechanism discards the flags which were set in atomic
execution. We ensure they are properly saved by calling the
cc->cpu_exec_enter/leave() functions around the loop.
As we are running cpu_exec_step_atomic() from the outermost loop we
need to avoid an abort() when single stepping over atomic code since
debug exception longjmp will point to the the setlongjmp in
cpu_exec(). We do this by setting a new jmp_env so that it jumps back
here on an exception.

There are a couple of changes that occur at the same time here:
- introduce a single vCPU qemu_tcg_cpu_thread_fn
One of these is spawned per vCPU with its own Thread and Condition
variables. qemu_tcg_rr_cpu_thread_fn is the new name for the old
single threaded function.
- the TLS current_cpu variable is now live for the lifetime of MTTCG
vCPU threads. This is for future work where async jobs need to know
the vCPU context they are operating in.
The user to switch on multi-thread behaviour and spawn a thread
per-vCPU. For a simple test kvm-unit-test like:
./arm/run ./arm/locking-test.flat -smp 4 -accel tcg,thread=multi
Will now use 4 vCPU threads and have an expected FAIL (instead of the
unexpected PASS) as the default mode of the test has no protection when
incrementing a shared variable.
We enable the parallel_cpus flag to ensure we generate correct barrier
and atomic code if supported by the front and backends. This doesn't
automatically enable MTTCG until default_mttcg_enabled() is updated to
check the configuration is supported.

There are now only two uses of the global exit_request left.
The first ensures we exit the run_loop when we first start to process
pending work and in the kick handler. This is just as easily done by
setting the first_cpu->exit_request flag.
The second use is in the round robin kick routine. The global
exit_request ensured every vCPU would set its local exit_request and
cause a full exit of the loop. Now the iothread isn't being held while
running we can just rely on the kick handler to push us out as intended.
We lightly re-factor the main vCPU thread to ensure cpu->exit_requests
cause us to exit the main loop and process any IO requests that might
come along. As an cpu->exit_request may legitimately get squashed
while processing the EXCP_INTERRUPT exception we also check
cpu->queued_work_first to ensure queued work is expedited as soon as
possible.

This finally allows TCG to benefit from the iothread introduction: Drop
the global mutex while running pure TCG CPU code. Reacquire the lock
when entering MMIO or PIO emulation, or when leaving the TCG loop.
We have to revert a few optimization for the current TCG threading
model, namely kicking the TCG thread in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread and not
kicking it in qemu_cpu_kick. We also need to disable RAM block
reordering until we have a more efficient locking mechanism at hand.
Still, a Linux x86 UP guest and my Musicpal ARM model boot fine here.
These numbers demonstrate where we gain something:

..and make the definition local to cpus. In preparation for MTTCG the
concept of a global tcg_current_cpu will no longer make sense. However
we still need to keep track of it in the single-threaded case to be able
to exit quickly when required.
qemu_cpu_kick_no_halt() moves and becomes qemu_cpu_kick_rr_cpu() to
emphasise its use-case. qemu_cpu_kick now kicks the relevant cpu as
well as qemu_kick_rr_cpu() which will become a no-op in MTTCG.
For the time being the setting of the global exit_request remains.

We know there will be cases where MTTCG won't work until additional work
is done in the front/back ends to support. It will however be useful to
be able to turn it on.
As a result MTTCG will default to off unless the combination is
supported. However the user can turn it on for the sake of testing.

This changes the *_run_on_cpu APIs (and helpers) to pass data in a
run_on_cpu_data type instead of a plain void *. This is because we
sometimes want to pass a target address (target_ulong) and this fails on
32 bit hosts emulating 64 bit guests.

Reimplement bdrv_flush_all for vm_stop. In contrast to blk_flush_all,
bdrv_flush_all does not have device model restrictions. This allows
us to flush and halt unconditionally without error.
This allows us to do things like migrate when we have a device with
an open tray, but has a node that may need to be flushed, or nodes
that aren't currently attached to any device and need to be flushed.
Specifically, this allows us to migrate when we have a CDROM with
an open tray.

start_exclusive uses CPU_FOREACH, merge exclusive_lock with
qemu_cpu_list_lock: together with a call to exclusive_idle (via
cpu_exec_start/end) in cpu_list_add, this protects exclusive work
against concurrent CPU addition and removal.

CPUState is a fairly common pointer to pass to these helpers. This means
if you need other arguments for the async_run_on_cpu case you end up
having to do a g_malloc to stuff additional data into the routine. For
the current users this isn't a massive deal but for MTTCG this gets
cumbersome when the only other parameter is often an address.
This adds the typedef run_on_cpu_func for helper functions which has an
explicit CPUState * passed as the first parameter. All the users of
run_on_cpu and async_run_on_cpu have had their helpers updated to use
CPUState where available.

This sync API will be used by the CPU hotplug code to wait for the CPU to
completely get removed before flagging the failure to the device_add
command.
Sync version of this call is needed to correctly recover from CPU
realization failures when ->plug() handler fails.

In order to deal well with the kvm vcpus (which can not be removed without any
protection), we do not close KVM vcpu fd, just record and mark it as stopped
into a list, so that we can reuse it for the appending cpu hot-add request if
possible. It is also the approach that kvm guys suggested:

On Linux, sigprocmask() and pthread_sigmask() are in practice the
same thing (they only set the signal mask for the calling thread),
but the documentation states that the behaviour of sigprocmask() in a
multithreaded process is undefined. Use pthread_sigmask() instead
(which is what we do in almost all places in QEMU that alter the
signal mask already).

exec-all.h contains TCG-specific definitions. It is not needed outside
TCG-specific files such as translate.c, exec.c or *helper.c.
One generic function had snuck into include/exec/exec-all.h; move it to
include/qom/cpu.h.

As vm_clock_warp_start is a 64 bit value this causes problems for the
compiler trying to come up with a suitable atomic operation on 32 bit
hosts. Because the variable is protected by vm_clock_seqlock, we check its
value inside a seqlock critical section.

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns
matches the unit of the expression on the right side of the plus.

qemu_clock_warp function is called to update virtual clock when CPU
is sleeping. This function includes replay checkpoint to make execution
deterministic in icount mode.
Record/replay module flushes async event queue at checkpoints.
Some of the events (e.g., block devices operations) include interaction
with hardware. E.g., APIC polled by block devices sets one of IRQ flags.
Flag to be set depends on currently executed thread (CPU or iothread).
Therefore in replay mode we have to process the checkpoints in the same thread
as they were recorded.
qemu_clock_warp function (and its checkpoint) may be called from different
thread. This patch decouples two different execution cases of this function:
call when CPU is sleeping from iothread and call from cpu thread to update
virtual clock.
First task is performed by qemu_start_warp_timer function. It sets warp
timer event to the moment of nearest pending virtual timer.
Second function (qemu_account_warp_timer) is called from cpu thread
before execution of the code. It advances virtual clock by adding the length
of period while CPU was sleeping.

There's no reason to do two malloc's for a flat union; let's just
inline the branch struct directly into the C union branch of the
flat union.
Surprisingly, fewer clients were actually using explicit references
to the branch types in comparison to the number of flat unions
thus modified.
This lets us reduce the hack in qapi-types:gen_variants() added in
the previous patch; we no longer need to distinguish between
alternates and flat unions.
The change to unboxed structs means that u.data (added in commit
cee2dedb) is now coincident with random fields of each branch of
the flat union, whereas beforehand it was only coincident with
pointers (since all branches of a flat union have to be objects).
Note that this was already the case for simple unions - but there
we got lucky. Remember, visit_start_union() blindly returns true
for all visitors except for the dealloc visitor, where it returns
the value !!obj->u.data, and that this result then controls
whether to proceed with the visit to the variant. Pre-patch,
this meant that flat unions were testing whether the boxed pointer
was still NULL, and thereby skipping visit_end_implicit_struct()
and avoiding a NULL dereference if the pointer had not been
allocated. The same was true for simple unions where the current
branch had pointer type, except there we bypassed visit_type_FOO().
But for simple unions where the current branch had scalar type, the
contents of that scalar meant that the decision to call
visit_type_FOO() was data-dependent - the reason we got lucky there
is that visit_type_FOO() for all scalar types in the dealloc visitor
is a no-op (only the pointer variants had anything to free), so it
did not matter whether the dealloc visit was skipped. But with this
patch, we would risk leaking memory if we could skip a call to
visit_type_FOO_fields() based solely on a data-dependent decision.
But notice: in the dealloc visitor, visit_type_FOO() already handles
a NULL obj - it was only the visit_type_implicit_FOO() that was
failing to check for NULL. And now that we have refactored things to
have the branch be part of the parent struct, we no longer have a
separate pointer that can be NULL in the first place. So we can just
delete the call to visit_start_union() altogether, and blindly visit
the branch type; there is no change in behavior except to the dealloc
visitor, where we now unconditionally visit the branch, but where that
visit is now always safe (for a flat union, we can no longer
dereference NULL, and for a simple union, visit_type_FOO() was already
safely handling NULL on pointer types).
Unfortunately, simple unions are not as easy to switch to unboxed
layout; because we are special-casing the hidden implicit type with
a single 'data' member, we really DO need to keep calling another
layer of visit_start_struct(), with a second malloc; although there
are some cleanups planned for simple unions in later patches.
visit_start_union() and gen_visit_implicit_struct() are now unused.
Drop them.
Note that after this patch, the only remaining use of
visit_start_implicit_struct() is for alternate types; the next patch
will do further cleanup based on that fact.

Commit 86f4b687 broke compilation on MIPS and SPARC, which have a
preprocessor pollution of '#define mips 1' and '#define sparc 1',
respectively. Treat it the same way as we do for the pollution with
'unix', so that QMP remains backwards compatible and only the C code
needs to use the alternative 'q_mips', 'q_sparc' spelling.

Jiri saw a hang on pause_all_vcpus called from postcopy_start,
where the cpus are all apparently stopped ('stopped' flag set)
but pause_all_vcpus is still stuck on a cond_wait on qemu_paused_cond.
We suspect this is happening if a qmp_stop is called at about the
same time as the postcopy code calls that pause_all_vcpus;
although they both should have the main lock held, Paolo spotted
the cond_wait unlocks the global lock so perhaps they both
could end up waiting at the same time?

Allow multiple calls to cpu_address_space_init(); each
call adds an entry to the cpu->ases array at the specified
index. It is up to the target-specific CPU code to actually use
these extra address spaces.
Since this multiple AddressSpace support won't work with
KVM, add an assertion to avoid confusing failures.

Rather than setting cpu->as unconditionally in cpu_exec_init
(and then having target-i386 override this later), don't set
it until the first call to cpu_address_space_init.
This requires us to initialise the address space for
both TCG and KVM (KVM doesn't need the AS listener but
it does require cpu->as to be set).
For target CPUs which don't set up any address spaces (currently
everything except i386), add the default address_space_memory
in qemu_init_vcpu().

The CpuInfo struct is used only by the 'query-cpus' output
command, so we are free to modify it by adding fields (clients
are already supposed to ignore unknown output fields), or by
changing optional members to mandatory, while still keeping
QMP wire compatibility with older versions of qemu.
When qapi type CpuInfo was originally created for 0.14, we had
no notion of a flat union, and instead just listed a bunch of
optional fields with documentation about the mutually-exclusive
choice of which instruction pointer field(s) would be provided
for a given architecture. But now that we have flat unions and
introspection, it is better to segregate off which fields will
be provided according to the actual architecture. With this in
place, we no longer need the fields to be optional, because the
choice of the new 'arch' discriminator serves that role.
This has an additional benefit: the old all-in-one struct was
the only place in the code base that had a case-sensitive
naming of members 'pc' vs. 'PC'. Separating these spellings
into different branches of the flat union will allow us to add
restrictions against future case-insensitive collisions, since
that is generally a poor interface practice.

There are still I/O operations when the vm is stopped. For example,
stop the vm, and do block migration. In this case, we don't drain all
I/O operation, and may meet the following problem:

icount_warp_rt function is called by qemu_clock_warp and as
callback of icount_warp timer. This patch adds call to qemu_clock_warp
into main_loop_wait function, because icount warp may be missed
in record/replay mode, when CPU is sleeping.
This patch also disables of calling this function by timer, because
it is not needed after making modifications of main_loop_wait.

Clock ticks are considered as the sources of non-deterministic data for
virtual machine. This patch implements saving the clock values when they
are acquired (virtual, host clock).
When replaying the execution corresponding values are read from log and
transfered to the module, which wants to read the values.
Such a design required the clock polling to be synchronized. Sometimes
it is not true - e.g. when timeouts for timer lists are checked. In this case
we use a cached value of the clock, passing it to the client code.

This patch adds calls to replay functions into the icount setup block.
In record mode number of executed instructions is written to the log.
In replay mode number of istructions to execute is taken from the replay log.
When replayed instructions counter is expired qemu_notify_event()
function is called to wake up the iothread.

Provide a method to throttle guest cpu execution. CPUState is augmented with
timeout controls and throttle start/stop functions. To throttle the guest cpu
the caller simply has to call the throttle set function and provide a percentage
of throttle time.

This hides the tcg_halt_cond and tcg_cpu_thread global variables
inside qemu_tcg_init_vcpu. Multi-threaded TCG will need one
QemuCond and one QemuThread per virtual cpu, so it's preferrable
to use cpu->halt_cond and cpu->thread.

Signals are slow and do not exist on Win32. The previous patches
have done most of the legwork to introduce memory barriers (some
of them were even there already for the sake of Windows!) and
we can now set the flags directly in the iothread.
qemu_cpu_kick_thread is not used anymore on TCG, since the TCG thread is
never outside usermode while the CPU is running (not halted). Instead run
the content of the signal handler (now in qemu_cpu_kick_no_halt) directly.
qemu_cpu_kick_no_halt is also used in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread to avoid
the overhead of qemu_cond_broadcast.

Use the same API to trigger interruption of a CPU, no matter if
under TCG or KVM. There is no difference: these calls come from
the CPU thread, so the qemu_cpu_kick calls will send a signal
to the running thread and it will be processed synchronously,
just like a call to cpu_exit. The only difference is in the
overhead, but neither call to cpu_exit (now qemu_cpu_kick)
is in a hot path.

This is already useful on Windows in order to remove tls.h, because
accesses to current_cpu are done from a different thread on that
platform. It will be used on POSIX platforms as soon TCG stops using
signals to interrupt the execution of translated code.

When QEMU starts the RCU thread executes qemu_mutex_lock_thread
causing error "qemu:qemu_cpu_kick_thread: No such process" and exits.
This isn't occur frequently but in glibc the thread id can exist and
this not guarantee that the thread is on active/running state. If is
inserted a sleep(1) after newthread assignment [1] the issue appears.
So not make assumption that thread exist if first_cpu->thread is set
then change the validation of cpu to created that is set into cpu
threads (kvm, tcg, dummy).

After commit 626cf8f (icount: set can_do_io outside TB execution,
2014-12-08), can_do_io is set to 1 if not executing code. It is
no longer necessary to make this assumption in cpu_can_do_io.
It is also possible to remove the use_icount test, simply by
never setting cpu->can_do_io to 0 unless use_icount is true.
With these changes cpu_can_do_io boils down to a read of
cpu->can_do_io.

The sole caller of this function navigates the cpu->env_ptr only for
this function to take it back the cpu pointer straight away. Pass in
cpu pointer instead and grab the env pointer locally in the function.

This function will be used to avoid recursive locking of the iothread lock
whenever address_space_rw/ld*/st* are called with the BQL held, which is
almost always the case.
Tracking whether the iothread is owned is very cheap (just use a TLS
variable) but requires some care because now the lock must always be
taken with qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(). Previously this wasn't the case.
Outside TCG mode this is not a problem. In TCG mode, we need to be
careful and avoid the "prod out of compiled code" step if already
in a VCPU thread. This is easily done with a check on current_cpu,
i.e. qemu_in_vcpu_thread().
Hopefully, multithreaded TCG will get rid of the whole logic to kick
VCPUs whenever an I/O event occurs!

The next patch will require the BQL to be always taken with
qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(), while right now this isn't the case.
Outside TCG mode this is not a problem. In TCG mode, we need to be
careful and avoid the "prod out of compiled code" step if already
in a VCPU thread. This is easily done with a check on current_cpu,
i.e. qemu_in_vcpu_thread().
Hopefully, multithreaded TCG will get rid of the whole logic to kick
VCPUs whenever an I/O event occurs!

These macros expand into error class enumeration constant, comma,
string. Unclean. Has been that way since commit 13f59ae.
The error class is always ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR since the previous
commit.
Clean up as follows:
* Prepend every use of a QERR_ macro by ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, and
delete it from the QERR_ macro. No change after preprocessing.
* Rewrite error_set(ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, ...) into
error_setg(...). Again, no change after preprocessing.

We create optional sections with this patch. But we already have
optional subsections. Instead of having two mechanism that do the
same, we can just generalize it.
For subsections we just change:
- Add a needed function to VMStateDescription
- Remove VMStateSubsection (after removal of the needed function
it is just a VMStateDescription)
- Adjust the whole tree, moving the needed function to the corresponding
VMStateDescription

While qemu is running in sleep=no mode, a warning will be printed
when no timer deadline is set.
As this mode is intended for getting deterministic virtual time, if no
timer is set on the virtual clock this determinism is broken.

The 'sleep' parameter sets the icount_sleep mode, which is enabled by
default. To disable it, add the 'sleep=no' parameter (or 'nosleep') to the
qemu -icount option.

When the icount_sleep mode is disabled, the QEMU_VIRTUAL_CLOCK runs at the
maximum possible speed by warping the sleep times of the virtual cpu to the
soonest clock deadline. The virtual clock will be updated only according
the instruction counter.

following a464982499, it's now possible for
there to be attempts to take the BQL before CPUs have been realized in
cases where a machine model inits peripherals before the first CPU.
BQL lock aquisition kicks the first_cpu, leading to a segfault if this
happens pre-realize. Guard the CPU kick routine to perform no action for
a CPU that doesn't exist or doesn't have a thread yet.
There was a fix to this with commit
6b49809c59, but the check there misses
the case where the CPU has been inited and not realized. Strengthen the
check to make sure that the first_cpu has a thread (i.e. it is
realized) before allowing the kick.

2ed1ebcf6 "timer: replace time() with QEMU_CLOCK_HOST" broke compile
when configured with --enable-profiler. Turned out the profiler has been
broken for a while.
This does s/qemu_time/tcg_time/ as the profiler only works in a TCG mode.
This also fixes the compile error.
This changes profile_getclock() to return nanoseconds rather than
CPU ticks as the "profile" HMP command prints seconds and there is no
platform-independent way to get ticks-per-second rate.
Since TCG is quite slow and get_clock() returns nanoseconds (fine
enough), this should not affect precision much.
This removes unused qemu_time_start and tlb_flush_time.

When requesting a size which cannot be read, the error message shows
a different address which is misleading to the user and it looks like
something's wrong with the address parsing. This is because the input
@addr variable is incremented in the memory dumping loop:

For good measure, ensure that the following sequence:
thread 1 calls qemu_mutex_lock_iothread
thread 2 calls qemu_mutex_lock_iothread
VCPU thread are created
VCPU thread enters execution loop
results in the VCPU threads letting the other two threads run
and obeying iothread_requesting_mutex even if the VCPUs are
not halted. To do this, check iothread_requesting_mutex
before execution starts.

When two threads (other than the low-priority TCG VCPU thread)
are competing for the iothread lock, a deadlock can happen. This
is because iothread_requesting_mutex is set to false by the first
thread that gets the mutex, and then the VCPU thread might never
yield from the execution loop. If iothread_requesting_mutex is
changed from a bool to a counter, the deadlock is fixed.
However, there is another bug in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread that
can be triggered by the new call_rcu thread. The bug happens
if qemu_mutex_lock_iothread is called before the CPUs are
created. In that case, first_cpu is NULL and the caller
segfaults in qemu_mutex_lock_iothread. To fix this, just
do not do the kick if first_cpu is NULL.

Note that even after this patch, most callers of address_space_*
functions must still be under the big QEMU lock, otherwise the memory
region returned by address_space_translate can disappear as soon as
address_space_translate returns. This will be fixed in the next part
of this series.

qemu_clock_run_timers() only takes care of main_loop_tlg, we shouldn't
forget aio timer list groups.
Currently, the qemu_clock_deadline_ns_all (a few lines above) counts all
the timergroups of this clock type, including aio tlg, but we don't fire
them, so they are never cleared, which makes a dead loop.
For example, this function hangs when trying to drive throttled block
request queue with qtest clock_step.

Exception index is reset at every entry at every entry into cpu_exec()
function. This may cause missing the exceptions while replaying them.

Ticks and clock offset used by CPU timers have to be saved in vmstate.
But vmstate for these fields registered only in icount mode.
Missing registration leads to breaking the continuity when vmstate is loaded.
This patch introduces new initialization function which fixes this.

This implements an NMI interface for s390 and s390-ccw machines.
This removes #ifdef s390 branch in qmp_inject_nmi so new s390's
nmi_monitor_handler() callback is going to be used for NMI.
Since nmi_monitor_handler()-calling code is platform independent,
CPUState::cpu_index is used instead of S390CPU::env.cpu_num.
There should not be any change in behaviour as both @cpu_index and
@cpu_num are global CPU numbers.
Note that s390_cpu_restart() already takes care of the specified cpu,
so we don't need to schedule via async_run_on_cpu().
Since the only error s390_cpu_restart() can return is ENOSYS, convert
it to QERR_UNSUPPORTED.

This introduces an NMI (Non Maskable Interrupt) interface with
a single nmi_monitor_handler() method. A machine or a device can
implement it. This searches for an QOM object with this interface
and if it is implemented, calls it. The callback implements an action
required to cause debug crash dump on in-kernel debugger invocation.
The callback returns Error**.
This adds a nmi_monitor_handle() helper which walks through
all objects to find the interface. The interface method is called
for all found instances.
This adds support for it in qmp_inject_nmi(). Since no architecture
supports it at the moment, there is no change in behaviour.
This changes inject-nmi command description for HMP and QMP.

The goal is to sleep qemu whenever the guest clock
is in advance compared to the host clock (we use
the monotonic clocks). The amount of time to sleep
is calculated in the execution loop in cpu_exec.
At first, we tried to approximate at each for loop the real time elapsed
while searching for a TB (generating or retrieving from cache) and
executing it. We would then approximate the virtual time corresponding
to the number of virtual instructions executed. The difference between
these 2 values would allow us to know if the guest is in advance or delayed.
However, the function used for measuring the real time
(qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_REALTIME)) proved to be very expensive.
We had an added overhead of 13% of the total run time.
Therefore, we modified the algorithm and only take into account the
difference between the 2 clocks at the begining of the cpu_exec function.
During the for loop we try to reduce the advance of the guest only by
computing the virtual time elapsed and sleeping if necessary. The overhead
is thus reduced to 3%. Even though this method still has a noticeable
overhead, it no longer is a bottleneck in trying to achieve a better
guest frequency for which the guest clock is faster than the host one.
As for the the alignement of the 2 clocks, with the first algorithm
the guest clock was oscillating between -1 and 1ms compared to the host clock.
Using the second algorithm we notice that the guest is 5ms behind the host, which
is still acceptable for our use case.
The tests where conducted using fio and stress. The host machine in an i5 CPU at
3.10GHz running Debian Jessie (kernel 3.12). The guest machine is an arm versatile-pb
built with buildroot.
Currently, on our test machine, the lowest icount we can achieve that is suitable for
aligning the 2 clocks is 6. However, we observe that the IO tests (using fio) are
slower than the cpu tests (using stress).

When using the icount option on ARM, the virtual
clock starts counting at realtime clock but it
should start at 0.
The reason why the virtual clock starts at realtime clock
is because the first time we call qemu_clock_warp (which
calls icount_warp_rt) in tcg_exec_all, qemu_icount_bias
(which is part of the virtual time computation mechanism)
will increment by realtime - vm_clock_warp_start, with
vm_clock_warp_start being 0 (see icount_warp_rt in cpus.c).
By changing the value of vm_clock_warp_start from 0 to -1,
the first time we call qemu_clock_warp which calls
icount_warp_rt, we will return immediatly because
icount_warp_rt first checks if vm_clock_warp_start is -1
and if it's the case it returns. Therefore, qemu_icount_bias
will first be incremented by the value of a virtual timer
deadline when the virtual cpu goes from active to inactive.
The virtual time will start at 0 and increment based
on the instruction counter when the vcpu is active or
the qemu_icount_bias value when inactive.

There patch protects vmstop_requested with a lock and introduces
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare.
Together with the new call to qemu_vmstop_requested in vm_start,
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare avoids a race where the VM could remain
stopped even though the iostatus of a block device has already been set
(for example).
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare however also lets the caller thread
delay observation of the state change until it has itself communicated
that change to the user. This delay avoids any possibility of a wrong
reordering of the BLOCK_IO_ERROR event and the subsequent STOP event.

Stop/cont commands are broken with -icount due to a deadlock. The
real problem is that the computation of timers_state.cpu_ticks_offset
makes no sense with -icount enabled: we set it to an icount clock value
in cpu_disable_ticks, and subtract a TSC (or similar, whatever
cpu_get_real_ticks happens to return) value in cpu_enable_ticks.
The fix is simple. timers_state.cpu_ticks_offset is only used
together with cpu_get_real_ticks, so we can use cpu_get_real_ticks
in cpu_disable_ticks. There is no need to update cpu_ticks_prev
at the time cpu_disable_ticks is called; instead, we can do it
the next time cpu_get_ticks is called.
The change to cpu_disable_ticks is the important part of the patch.
The rest modifies the code to always check timers_state.cpu_ticks_prev,
even when the ticks are not advancing (i.e. the VM is stopped). It also
makes a similar change to cpu_get_clock_locked, so that the code remains
similar for cpu_get_ticks and cpu_get_clock_locked.

Computing the deadline of all vm_clocks is somewhat expensive and calls
out to qemu-timer.c; two reasons not to do it in the seqlock's write-side
critical section. This however opens the door for races in setting and
reading vm_clock_warp_start.
To plug them, we need to cover the case where a new deadline slips in
between the call to qemu_clock_deadline_ns_all and the actual modification
of the icount_warp_timer. Restrict changes to vm_clock_warp_start and
the icount_warp_timer's expiration time, to only move them back (which
would simply cause an early wakeup).
If a vm_clock timer is cancelled while CPUs are idle, this might cause the
icount_warp_timer to fire unnecessarily. This is not a problem, after it
fires the timer becomes inactive and the next call to timer_mod_anticipate
will be precise.
In addition to this, we must deactivate the icount_warp_timer _before_
checking whether CPUs are idle. This way, if the "last" CPU becomes idle
during the call to timer_del we will still set up the icount_warp_timer.

To prepare for future code changes, move the increment of qemu_icount_bias
outside the "if" statement.
Also, hoist outside the if the check for timers that expired due to the
"warping". The check is redundant when !runstate_is_running(), but
doing it this way helps because the code that increments qemu_icount_bias
will be a critical section.

QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL may be read outside BQL. This will make its
foundation, i.e. cpu_clock_offset exposed to race condition.
Using private lock to protect it.
After this patch, reading QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL is thread safe
unless use_icount is true, in which case the existing callers
still rely on the BQL.
Lock rule: private lock innermost, ie BQL->"this lock"

It was introduced to loop over CPUs from target-independent code, but
since commit 182735efaf target-independent
CPUState is used.
A loop can be considered more efficient than function calls in a loop,
and CPU_FOREACH() hides implementation details just as well, so use that
instead.

There is the 'nmi' command that is used to trigger a guest dump via kdump feature on x86.
s390 uses RESTART interrupt to trigger kdump.
So, this patch provides a mean to use 'nmi' command on s390 to raise RESTART interrupt.
The CPU to receive the RESTART interrupt is the "default" one.
There is an infrastructure to select the "default" CPU using 'cpu' command.
The 'info cpus' command can be used to see which one is the "default".
In order to wire up the RESTART to 'nmi' command we had to:
1. implement the kvm_s390_cpu_restart function by exporting the existing code
2. implement s390_cpu_restart function as kvm-aware wrapper
3. modify the qmp_inject_nmi function to enable (for s390) the scan for
"default" CPU and call s390_cpu_restart for it;
3. fix some messages.

Notify all timerlists derived from vm_clock in icount warp
calculations.
When calculating timer delay based on vm_clock deadline, use
all timerlists.
For compatibility, maintain an apparent bug where when using
icount, if no vm_clock timer was set, qemu_clock_deadline
would return INT32_MAX and always set an icount clock expiry
about 2 seconds ahead.
NB: thread safety - when different timerlists sit on different
threads, this will need some locking.

Even if the VM is already stopped, we cannot assume that all data has
already been successfully flushed to disk. The flush during the previous
vm_stop() could have failed.
Run bdrv_flush_all() unconditionally so that we get an error each time
if the block device isn't really flushed.
