In the slavio timer device, the ptimer TimerContext::timer is
always created by slavio_timer_init(), so there's no need to
check it for NULL; remove the single unneeded NULL check.
This will be useful to avoid compiler/Coverity errors when
a subsequent change adds a use of t->timer before the location
we currently do the NULL check.

When booting a recent Linux kernel, the qemu message "Timer with delta
zero, disabling" is seen, apparently because a ptimer is started before
being initialized. Fix the problem by initializing the offending ptimer
before starting it.
The bug is effectively harmless in the old QEMUBH setup
because the sequence of events is:
* the delta zero means the timer expires immediately
* ptimer_reload() arranges for exynos4210_gfrc_event() to be called
* ptimer_reload() notices the zero delta and disables the timer
* later, the QEMUBH runs, and exynos4210_gfrc_event() correctly
configures the timer and restarts it
In the new transaction based API the bug is still harmless,
but differences of when the callback function runs mean the
message is not printed any more:
* ptimer_run() does nothing as it's inside a transaction block
* ptimer_transaction_commit() sees it has work to do and
calls ptimer_reload()
* the zero delta means the timer expires immediately
* ptimer_reload() calls exynos4210_gfrc_event() directly
* exynos4210_gfrc_event() configures the timer
* the delta is no longer zero so ptimer_reload() doesn't complain
(the zero-delta test is after the trigger-callback in
the ptimer_reload() function)
Regardless, the behaviour here was not intentional, and we should
just program the ptimer correctly to start with.

Currently the ptimer design uses a QEMU bottom-half as its
mechanism for calling back into the device model using the
ptimer when the timer has expired. Unfortunately this design
is fatally flawed, because it means that there is a lag
between the ptimer updating its own state and the device
callback function updating device state, and guest accesses
to device registers between the two can return inconsistent
device state.
We want to replace the bottom-half design with one where
the guest device's callback is called either immediately
(when the ptimer triggers by timeout) or when the device
model code closes a transaction-begin/end section (when the
ptimer triggers because the device model changed the
ptimer's count value or other state). As the first step,
rename ptimer_init() to ptimer_init_with_bh(), to free up
the ptimer_init() name for the new API. We can then convert
all the ptimer users away from ptimer_init_with_bh() before
removing it entirely.
(Commit created with
git grep -l ptimer_init | xargs sed -i -e 's/ptimer_init/ptimer_init_with_bh/'
and three overlong lines folded by hand.)

First up: This is not the way the hardware behaves.
However, it helps resolve real-world problems with short periods being
used under Linux. Commit 4451d3f59f2a ("clocksource/drivers/fttmr010:
Fix set_next_event handler") in Linux fixed the timer driver to
correctly schedule the next event for the Aspeed controller, and in
combination with 5daa8212c08e ("ARM: dts: aspeed: Describe random number
device") Linux will now set a timer with a period as low as 1us.
Configuring a qemu timer with such a short period results in spending
time handling the interrupt in the model rather than executing guest
code, leading to noticeable "sticky" behaviour in the guest.
The behaviour of Linux is correct with respect to the hardware, so we
need to improve our handling under emulation. The approach chosen is to
provide back-pressure information by calculating an acceptable minimum
number of ticks to be set on the model. Under Linux an additional read
is added in the timer configuration path to detect back-pressure, which
will never occur on hardware. However if back-pressure is observed, the
driver alerts the clock event subsystem, which then performs its own
next event dilation via a config option - d1748302f70b ("clockevents:
Make minimum delay adjustments configurable")
A minimum period of 5us was experimentally determined on a Lenovo
T480s, which I've increased to 20us for "safety".

* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing

The PL031 RTC tracks the difference between the guest RTC
and the host RTC using a tick_offset field. For migration,
however, we currently always migrate the offset between
the guest and the vm_clock, even if the RTC clock is not
the same as the vm_clock; this was an attempt to retain
migration backwards compatibility.
Unfortunately this results in the RTC behaving oddly across
a VM state save and restore -- since the VM clock stands still
across save-then-restore, regardless of how much real world
time has elapsed, the guest RTC ends up out of sync with the
host RTC in the restored VM.
Fix this by migrating the raw tick_offset. To retain migration
compatibility as far as possible, we have a new property
migrate-tick-offset; by default this is 'true' and we will
migrate the true tick offset in a new subsection; if the
incoming data has no subsection we fall back to the old
vm_clock-based offset information, so old->new migration
compatibility is preserved. For complete new->old migration
compatibility, the property is set to 'false' for 4.0 and
earlier machine types (this will only affect 'virt-4.0'
and below, as none of the other pl031-using machines are
versioned).

The Linux kernel driver was updated in commit 4451d3f59f2a
("clocksource/drivers/fttmr010: Fix set_next_event handler) to fix an
issue observed on hardware:
> RELOAD register is loaded into COUNT register when the aspeed timer
> is enabled, which means the next event may be delayed because timer
> interrupt won't be generated until <0xFFFFFFFF - current_count +
> cycles>.
When running under Qemu, the system appeared "laggy". The guest is now
scheduling timer events too regularly, starving the host of CPU time.
This patch modifies the timer model to attempt to schedule the timer
expiry as the guest requests, but if we have missed the deadline we
re interrupt and try again, which allows the guest to catch up.
Provides expected behaviour with old and new guest code.

The qmp/hmp command 'system_wakeup' is simply a direct call to
'qemu_system_wakeup_request' from vl.c. This function verifies if
runstate is SUSPENDED and if the wake up reason is valid before
proceeding. However, no error or warning is thrown if any of those
pre-requirements isn't met. There is no way for the caller to
differentiate between a successful wakeup or an error state caused
when trying to wake up a guest that wasn't suspended.
This means that system_wakeup is silently failing, which can be
considered a bug. Adding error handling isn't an API break in this
case - applications that didn't check the result will remain broken,
the ones that check it will have a chance to deal with it.
Adding to that, the commit before previous created a new QMP API called
query-current-machine, with a new flag called wakeup-suspend-support,
that indicates if the guest has the capability of waking up from suspended
state. Although such guest will never reach SUSPENDED state and erroring
it out in this scenario would suffice, it is more informative for the user
to differentiate between a failure because the guest isn't suspended versus
a failure because the guest does not have support for wake up at all.
All this considered, this patch changes qmp_system_wakeup to check if
the guest is capable of waking up from suspend, and if it is suspended.
After this patch, this is the output of system_wakeup in a guest that
does not have wake-up from suspend support (ppc64):
(qemu) system_wakeup
wake-up from suspend is not supported by this guest
(qemu)
And this is the output of system_wakeup in a x86 guest that has the
support but isn't suspended:
(qemu) system_wakeup
Unable to wake up: guest is not in suspended state
(qemu)

From include/qapi/error.h:
* Pass an existing error to the caller with the message modified:
* error_propagate(errp, err);
* error_prepend(errp, "Could not frobnicate '%s': ", name);
Fei Li pointed out that doing error_propagate() first doesn't work
well when @errp is &error_fatal or &error_abort: the error_prepend()
is never reached.
Since I doubt fixing the documentation will stop people from getting
it wrong, introduce error_propagate_prepend(), in the hope that it
lures people away from using its constituents in the wrong order.
Update the instructions in error.h accordingly.
Convert existing error_prepend() next to error_propagate to
error_propagate_prepend(). If any of these get reached with
&error_fatal or &error_abort, the error messages improve. I didn't
check whether that's the case anywhere.

can't actually fail, because all they do with the argument is passing it
to functions that can't fail: the QObject output visitor, and the

Drop the argument, and pass &error_abort to the QObject output visitor

There is currently a funny problem with the "mc146818rtc" device:
1) Start QEMU like this:
qemu-system-ppc64 -M pseries -S
2) At the HMP monitor, enter "info qom-tree". Note that there is an
entry for "/rtc (spapr-rtc)".
3) Introspect the mc146818rtc device like this:
device_add mc146818rtc,help
4) Run "info qom-tree" again. The "/rtc" entry is gone now!
The rtc_finalize() function of the mc146818rtc device has two bugs: First,
it tries to remove a "rtc" property, while the rtc_realizefn() added a
"rtc-time" property instead. And second, it should have been done in an
unrealize function, not in a finalize function, to avoid that this causes
problems during introspection.
But since adding aliases to the global machine state should not be done
from a device's realize function anyway, let's rather fix this issue
by moving the creation of the alias to the code that creates the device
(and thus is run from the machine init functions instead), i.e. the
mc146818_rtc_init() function for most machines. The prep machines are
special, since the mc146818rtc device is created here in the realize
function of the i82378 device. Since we certainly don't want to add the
alias there, we add it to some code that is called from the ibm_40p_init()
machine init function instead.
Since the alias is now only created during the machine init, we can remove
the object_property_del() completely.

If the CMSDK APB timer is set up with a zero RELOAD value
then it will count down to zero, fire once and then stay
at zero. From the point of view of the ptimer system, the
timer is disabled; but the enable bit in the CTRL register
is still set and if the guest subsequently writes to the
RELOAD or VALUE registers this should cause the timer to
start counting down again.
Add code to the write paths for RELOAD and VALUE so that
we correctly restart the timer in this situation.
Conversely, if the new RELOAD and VALUE are both zero,
we should stop the ptimer.

The timer controller can be driven by either an external 1MHz clock or
by the APB clock. Today, the model makes the assumption that the APB
frequency is always set to 24MHz but this is incorrect.
The AST2400 SoC on the palmetto machines uses a 48MHz input clock
source and the APB can be set to 48MHz. The consequence is a general
system slowdown. The QEMU machines using the AST2500 SoC do not seem
impacted today because the APB frequency is still set to 24MHz.
We fix the timer frequency for all SoCs by linking the Timer model to
the SCU model. The APB frequency driving the timers is now the one
configured for the SoC.

The previous commit improved compile time by including less of the
generated QAPI headers. This is impossible for stuff defined directly
in qapi-schema.json, because that ends up in headers that that pull in
everything.
Move everything but include directives from qapi-schema.json to new
sub-module qapi/misc.json, then include just the "misc" shard where
possible.
It's possible everywhere, except:
* monitor.c needs qmp-command.h to get qmp_init_marshal()
* monitor.c, ui/vnc.c and the generated qapi-event-FOO.c need
qapi-event.h to get enum QAPIEvent
Perhaps we'll get rid of those some other day.
Adding a type to qapi/migration.json now recompiles some 120 instead
of 2300 out of 5100 objects.

The point of writing a macro embedded in a 'do { ... } while (0)'
loop (particularly if the macro has multiple statements or would
otherwise end with an 'if' statement) is so that the macro can be
used as a drop-in statement with the caller supplying the
trailing ';'. Although our coding style frowns on brace-less 'if':
if (cond)
statement;
else
something else;
that is the classic case where failure to use do/while(0) wrapping
would cause the 'else' to pair with any embedded 'if' in the macro
rather than the intended outer 'if'. But conversely, if the macro
includes an embedded ';', then the same brace-less coding style
would now have two statements, making the 'else' a syntax error
rather than pairing with the outer 'if'. Thus, even though our
coding style with required braces is not impacted, ending a macro
with ';' makes our code harder to port to projects that use
brace-less styles.
The change should have no semantic impact. I was not able to
fully compile-test all of the changes (as some of them are
examples of the ugly bit-rotting debug print statements that are
completely elided by default, and I didn't want to recompile
with the necessary -D witnesses - cleaning those up is left as a
bite-sized task for another day); I did, however, audit that for
all files touched, all callers of the changed macros DID supply
a trailing ';' at the callsite, and did not appear to be used
as part of a brace-less conditional.

In some cases, the guest can observe the wrong ordering of UIP and
interrupts. This can happen if the VCPU exit is timed like this:
iothread VCPU
... wait for interrupt ...
t-100ns read register A
t wake up, take BQL
t+100ns update_in_progress
return false
return UIP=0
trigger interrupt
The interrupt is late; the VCPU expected the falling edge of UIP to
happen after the interrupt. update_in_progress is already trying to
cover this case by latching UIP if the timer is going to fire soon,
and the fix is documented in the commit message for commit 56038ef623
("RTC: Update the RTC clock only when reading it", 2012-09-10). It
cannot be tested with qtest, because its timing of interrupts vs. reads
is exact.
However, the implementation was incorrect because UIP cmos_ioport_read
cleared register A instead of leaving that to rtc_update_timer. Fixing
the implementation of cmos_ioport_read to match the commit message,
however, breaks the "uip-stuck" test case from the previous patch.
To fix it, skip update timer optimizations if UIP has been latched.

There are two issues in current code:
1) If the period is changed by re-configuring RegA, the coalesced
irq will be scaled to reflect the new period, however, it
calculates the new interrupt number like this:
s->irq_coalesced = (s->irq_coalesced * s->period) / period;
There are some clocks will be lost if they are not enough to
be squeezed to a single new period that will cause the VM clock
slower
In order to fix the issue, we calculate the interrupt window
based on the precise clock rather than period, then the clocks
lost during period is scaled can be compensated properly
2) If periodic_timer_update() is called due to RegA reconfiguration,
i.e, the period is updated, current time is not the start point
for the next periodic timer, instead, which should start from the
last interrupt, otherwise, the clock in VM will become slow
This patch takes the clocks from last interrupt to current clock
into account and compensates the clocks for the next interrupt,
especially if a complete interrupt was lost in this window, the
time can be caught up by LOST_TICK_POLICY_SLEW

It would have been less churn to keep the common case with no
arguments as meaning guest-triggered, and only modified the
host-triggered code paths, via a wrapper function, but then we'd
still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots;
changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly
categorized all callers.
Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request
causes an actual reset vs. a shutdown, it's easy to also add the

commit 33cd52b5d7 unset
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet in TYPE_SYSBUS, making all
sysbus devices appear on "-device help" and lack the "no-user"
flag in "info qdm".
To fix this, we can set user_creatable=false by default on
TYPE_SYS_BUS_DEVICE, but this requires setting
user_creatable=true explicitly on the sysbus devices that
actually work with -device.
Fortunately today we have just a few has_dynamic_sysbus=1
machines: virt, pc-q35-*, ppce500, and spapr.
virt, ppce500, and spapr have extra checks to ensure just a few
device types can be instantiated:
* virt supports only TYPE_VFIO_CALXEDA_XGMAC, TYPE_VFIO_AMD_XGBE.
* ppce500 supports only TYPE_ETSEC_COMMON.
* spapr supports only TYPE_SPAPR_PCI_HOST_BRIDGE.
This patch sets user_creatable=true explicitly on those 4 device
classes.
Now, the more complex cases:
pc-q35-*: q35 has no sysbus device whitelist yet (which is a
separate bug). We are in the process of fixing it and building a
sysbus whitelist on q35, but in the meantime we can fix the
"-device help" and "info qdm" bugs mentioned above. Also, despite
not being strictly necessary for fixing the q35 bug, reducing the
list of user_creatable=true devices will help us be more
confident when building the q35 whitelist.
xen: We also have a hack at xen_set_dynamic_sysbus(), that sets
has_dynamic_sysbus=true at runtime when using the Xen
accelerator. This hack is only used to allow xen-backend devices
to be dynamically plugged/unplugged.
This means today we can use -device with the following 22 device
types, that are the ones compiled into the qemu-system-x86_64 and
qemu-system-i386 binaries:
* allwinner-ahci
* amd-iommu
* cfi.pflash01
* esp
* fw_cfg_io
* fw_cfg_mem
* generic-sdhci
* hpet
* intel-iommu
* ioapic
* isabus-bridge
* kvmclock
* kvm-ioapic
* kvmvapic
* SUNW,fdtwo
* sysbus-ahci
* sysbus-fdc
* sysbus-ohci
* unimplemented-device
* virtio-mmio
* xen-backend
* xen-sysdev
This patch adds user_creatable=true explicitly to those devices,
temporarily, just to keep 100% compatibility with existing
behavior of q35. Subsequent patches will remove
user_creatable=true from the devices that are really not meant to
user-creatable on any machine, and remove the FIXME comment from
the ones that are really supposed to be user-creatable. This is
being done in separate patches because we still don't have an
obvious list of devices that will be whitelisted by q35, and I
would like to get each device reviewed individually.

cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet was introduced by commit
efec3dd631 to replace no_user. It was
supposed to be a temporary measure.
When it was introduced, we had 54
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code.
Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have
57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it
is safe to say it is not a temporary measure, and we won't see
the flag go away soon.
Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it

ARM A9MP processor has a peripheral timer with an auto-increment
register, which holds an increment step value. A user could set
this value to zero. When auto-increment control bit is enabled,
it leads to an infinite loop in 'a9_gtimer_update' while
updating comparator value. Remove this loop incrementing the
comparator value.

Current ARM MPTimer implementation uses QEMUTimer for the actual timer,
this implementation isn't complete and mostly tries to duplicate of what
generic ptimer is already doing fine.
Conversion to ptimer brings the following benefits and fixes:
- Simple timer pausing implementation
- Fixes counter value preservation after stopping the timer
- Properly handles prescaler != 0 / counter = 0 / load = 0 cases
- Code simplification and reduction
Bump VMSD to version 3, since VMState is changed and is not compatible
with the previous implementation.

qemu tracks guest time based on vector [base_rtc, last_update], in which
last_update stands for a monotonic tick which is actually uptime of the
host.
according to rtc implementation codes of recent releases and upstream,
after
migration, the time base vector [base_rtc, last_update] isn't updated to
coordinate with the destionation host, ie. qemu doesnt update last_update
to
uptime of the destination host.
what problem have we got because of this bug? after migration, guest time
may
jump back to several days ago, that will make some critical business
applications,
such as lotus notes, malfunction.
this patch is trying to fix the problem. first, when vmsave in progress,
we
rtc_update_time to refresh time stamp in cmos array, then during
vmrestore,
we rtc_set_time to update qemu base_rtc and last_update variable according
to time
stamp in cmos array.

The interval timer is similar to the CP0 Count/Compare timer within
each processor. The difference is the GIC_SH_COUNTER register is global
to the system so that all processors have the same time reference.
To ease implementation, all VPs are having its own QEMU timer but sharing
global settings and registers such as GIC_SH_CONFIG.COUTNSTOP and
GIC_SH_COUNTER.
MIPS GIC Interval Timer does support upto 64 bits of Count register but
in this implementation it is limited to 32 bits only.

In various Freescale SOCs, the GPT timers can be configured to select
its input clock.
Depending on the SOC the set of available input clocks may vary.
The actual single GPT definition was no good enough and because of it
booting the sabrelite board with a i.MX6DL device tree would fail
because of an incorrect input clock definition for the i.MX6DL SOC.
This patch fixes the i.MX6DL boot failure by adding the ability to
define a different set of input clocks depending on the considered SOC.
A different class has been defined for i.MX25, i.MX31 and i.MX6 each with
its specific set of input clocks.
The patch has been tested by booting KZM, i.MX25 PDK, i.MX6Q sabrelite
and i.MX6DL sabrelite.

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns
matches the unit of the expression on the right side of the plus.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.
