The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to
declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible
array member [1], introduced in C99:

By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler
warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the
structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined
behavior bugs from being unadvertenly introduced [2] to the
Linux codebase from now on.

In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers
a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).
Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h)
actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there
instead.
hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h
and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h.
Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h.
While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h.
Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects.

In my "build everything" tree, changing migration/vmstate.h triggers a
recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).
hw/hw.h supposedly includes it for convenience. Several other headers
include it just to get VMStateDescription. The previous commit made
that unnecessary.
Include migration/vmstate.h only where it's still needed. Touching it
now recompiles only some 1600 objects.

Certain devices types, like memory/CPU, are now being handled using a
hotplug interface provided by a top-level MachineClass. Hotpluggable
host bridges are another such device where it makes sense to use a
machine-level hotplug handler. However, unlike those devices,
host-bridges have a parent bus (the main system bus), and devices with
a parent bus use a different mechanism for registering their hotplug
handlers: qbus_set_hotplug_handler(). This interface currently expects
a handler to be a subclass of DeviceClass, but this is not the case
for MachineClass, which derives directly from ObjectClass.
Internally, the interface only requires an ObjectClass, so expose that
in qbus_set_hotplug_handler().

The current code was not correctly handling 64 B (Max USB 1.1 payload size)
packets and therefore preventing some of the messages from smart card to
pass through to the guest.
If the smart card in host responded with 34 B of data in APDU layer, the
CCID headers added up to 64 B. The packet was send, but not correctly
committed per USB specification (8.5.3.2 Variable-length Data Stage):
> When all of the data structure is returned to the host, the function
> should indicate that the Data stage is ended by returning a packet
> that is shorter than the MaxPacketSize for the pipe. If the data
> structure is an exact multiple of wMaxPacketSize for the pipe, the
> function will return a zero-length packet to indicate the end of the
> Data stage.
This lead the guest applications to timeout while waiting for the rest
of data (the emulation layer is answering with NAK until the timeout).
This patch is checking the current maximum packet size and if the
payload of this size is detected, the message buffer is not yet released.
With the next call, the empty buffer is sent and the message buffer
is finally released.

Commit d7d218ef02 attempted to change
dwProtocols to only advertise support for T=0 and not T=1. The change
was incorrect as it changed 0x00000003 to 0x00010000.
lsusb -v in a linux guest shows:
"dwProtocols 65536 (Invalid values detected)", though the
smart card could still be accessed. Windows 7 does not detect inserted
smart cards and logs the the following Error in the Event Logs:

Incorrect function. If this error persists, your smart card or reader

Modify the pre_save method on VMStateDescription to return an int
rather than void so that it potentially can fail.
Changed zillions of devices to make them return 0; the only
case I've made it return non-0 is hw/intc/s390_flic_kvm.c that already
had an error_report/return case.
Note: If you add an error exit in your pre_save you must emit
an error_report to say why.

Convert all uses of error_report("warning:"... to use warn_report()
instead. This helps standardise on a single method of printing warnings
to the user.
All of the warnings were changed using these two commands:
find ./* -type f -exec sed -i \
's|error_report(".*warning[,:] |warn_report("|Ig' {} +
Indentation fixed up manually afterwards.
The test-qdev-global-props test case was manually updated to ensure that
this patch passes make check (as the test cases are case sensitive).

Curiously, unrealize() is not being used, but it seems more
appropriate than handle_destroy() together with realize(). It is more
ubiquitous destroy name in qemu code base and may throw errors.

Check message size too when figuring whenever we should expect more data.
Fix debug message to show useful data, p->iov.size is fixed anyway if we
land there, print how much we got meanwhile instead.
Also check announced message size against actual message size. That
is a more general fix for CVE-2017-5898 than commit "c7dfbf3 usb: ccid:
check ccid apdu length".

Add err goto label where we can jump to from all error conditions.
STALL request on all errors. Reset position on all errors.
Normal request processing is not in a else branch any more, so this code
is reintended, there are no code changes in that part of the code
though.

CCID device emulator uses Application Protocol Data Units(APDU)
to exchange command and responses to and from the host.
The length in these units couldn't be greater than 65536. Add
check to ensure the same. It'd also avoid potential integer
overflow in emulated_apdu_from_guest.

The *_exitfn functions cannot fail and should not be
returning int.
This also removes the passthru_exitfn since this callback
does nothing as of now.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

The name field in a VMStateDescription is part of the migration state
versioning, so changing it will break migration. It's therefore a
bad idea to use a QOM typename macro to initialize it, because in
general we're free to rename QOM types as part of code refactoring
and cleanup. For the handful of devices that were doing this by
mistake, replace the QOM typenames with the corresponding literal
strings.

We don't support T=1 so we shouldn't advertise it by default.
Two independent changes:
* Default ATR
sets T=0. This gets overwritten by the client provided ATR later.
* Class descriptor
changes dwAdvertise dwProtocols.PPPP to 0x1 and dwProtocols.RRRR=0 per spec.

Introduces a new utility function: parse_debug_env to avoid code
duplication.
This overrides whatever debug value is set on the corresponding devices
from the command line, and is meant to ease the usage with any
management stack. For libvirt you can set environment variables by
extending the dom namespace, i.e:
