2001-01-26 Fernando Nasser <fnasser@redhat.com> Fix double parsing of filenames passed as command line arguments to GDB (causes weird handling of escape characters). Also, remove dependencies on the CLI from libgdb. * call-cmds.h: Remove declaration of exec_file_command(). * gdbcore.h: Remove declaration of exec_file_command(). Add declarations for exec_open() and exec_file_clear(). * symfile.h: Add declarations for symbol_file_add_main() and symbol_file_clear(). * exec.c (exec_open): New function. Implements to_open for exec targets. (exec_file_clear): New function. Makes GDB forget about a previously specified executable file. (exec_file_attach): Move parsing of arguments from here ... (exec_file_command): ... to here. (init_exec_ops): Use exec_open(), not exec_file_command() to implement to_open for exec targets. * symfile.c (symbol_file_add_main): New function. Call symbol_file_add() with default values. Used when the file name has already been parsed. (symbol_file_clear): New function. Makes GDB forget about previously read symbols. (symbol_file_command): Call the above function instead of inline code. * main.c: Include "symfile.h" and "gdbcore.h" instead of the deprecated "call-cmds.h". (captured_main): Call exec_file_attach() and symbol_file_add_main() instead of exec_file_command() and symbol_file_command(). (captured_main): Add comment. * corefile.c: Include "symfile.h". (core_file_command): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). (reopen_exec_file): Call exec_open() instead of exec_file_command(). * infcmd.c: Include "symfile.h". (attach_command): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). * infrun.c: Remove comment about the inclusion of "symfile.h", not any longer appropriate. (follow_exec): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). * remote-es.c: Include "symfile.h". (es1800_load): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). * remote-vx.c: Remove comment about the inclusion of "symfile.h", not any longer appropriate. (vx-wait): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). * solib-svr4.c (open_symbol_file_object): Call symbol_file_add_main() instead of symbol_file_command(). * v850ice.c (ice_file): Call exec_open(), exec_file_attach() and symbol_file_add_main() instead of exec_file_command() and symbol_file_command(). * Makefile.in: Update dependencies.

Canceling pagination caused by execution command from command line aborts readline/gdb This fixes: $ ./gdb program -ex "set height 2" -ex "start" ... Reading symbols from /home/pedro/gdb/tests/threads...done. ---Type <return> to continue, or q <return> to quit---^CQuit << ctrl-c triggers a Quit *type something* readline: readline_callback_read_char() called with no handler! Aborted $ Usually, if an error propagates all the way to the top level, we'll re-enable stdin, in case the command that was running was a synchronous command. That's done in the event loop's actual loop (event-loop.c:start_event_loop). However, if a foreground execution command is run before the event loop starts and throws, nothing is presently reenabling stdin, which leaves sync_execution set. When we do start the event loop, because sync_execution is still (mistakenly) set, display_gdb_prompt removes the readline input callback, even though stdin is registered in the event loop. Any input from here on results in readline aborting. Such commands are run through catch_command_errors, catch_command_errors_const, so add the tweak there. gdb/ 2014-07-14 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/17072 * main.c: Include event-top.h. gdb/17347 - Regression: GDB stopped on run with attached process Doing: gdb --pid=PID -ex run Results in GDB getting a SIGTTIN, and thus ending stopped. That's usually indicative of a missing target_terminal_ours call. E.g., from the PR: $ sleep 1h & p=$!; sleep 0.1; gdb -batch sleep $p -ex run [1] 28263 [1] Killed sleep 1h [2]+ Stopped gdb -batch sleep $p -ex run The workaround is doing: gdb -ex "attach $PID" -ex "run" instead of gdb [-p] $PID -ex "run" With the former, gdb waits for the attach command to complete before moving on to the "run" command, because the interpreter is in sync mode at this point, within execute_command. But for the latter, attach_command is called directly from captured_main, and thus misses that waiting. IOW, "run" is running before the attach continuation has run, before the program stops and attach completes. The broken terminal settings are just one symptom of that. Any command that queries or requires input results in the same. The fix is to wait in catch_command_errors (which is specific to main.c nowadays), just like we wait in execute_command. gdb/ChangeLog: 2014-09-11 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/17347 * main.c: Include "infrun.h". Fix PR gdb/18653: gdb disturbs inferior's inherited signal dispositions gdb's (or gdbserver's) own signal handling should not interfere with the signal dispositions their spawned children inherit. However, it currently does. For example, some paths in gdb cause SIGPIPE to be set to SIG_IGN, and as consequence, the child starts with SIGPIPE to set to SIG_IGN too, even though gdb was started with SIGPIPE set to SIG_DFL. This is because the exec family of functions does not reset the signal disposition of signals that are set to SIG_IGN: http://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xsh/execve.html Signals set to the default action (SIG_DFL) in the calling process image are set to the default action in the new process image. Signals set to be ignored (SIG_IGN) by the calling process image are set to be ignored by the new process image. Signals set to be caught by the calling process image are set to the default action in the new process image (see <signal.h>). And neither does it reset signal masks or flags. In order to be transparent, when spawning new child processes to debug (with "run", etc.), reset signal actions and mask back to what was originally inherited from gdb/gdbserver's parent, just before execing the target program to debug. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-08-09 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/18653 * Makefile.in (SFILES): Add common/signals-state-save-restore.c. Create new common/pathstuff.[ch] This commit moves the path manipulation routines found on utils.c to a new common/pathstuff.c, and updates the Makefile.in's accordingly. The routines moved are "gdb_realpath", "gdb_realpath_keepfile" and "gdb_abspath". This will be needed because gdbserver will have to call "gdb_abspath" on my next patch, which implements a way to expand the path of the inferior provided by the user in order to allow specifying just the binary name when starting gdbserver, like: $ gdbserver :1234 a.out With the recent addition of the startup-with-shell feature on gdbserver, this scenario doesn't work anymore if the user doesn't have the current directory listed in the PATH variable. I had to do a minor adjustment on "gdb_abspath" because we don't have access to "tilde_expand" on gdbserver, so now the function is using "gdb_tilde_expand" instead. Otherwise, the code is the same. Regression tested on the BuildBot, without regressions. gdb/ChangeLog: 2018-02-28 Sergio Durigan Junior <sergiodj@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (COMMON_SFILES): Add "common/pathstuff.c". Eliminate catch_errors If you want to use catch_errors with a function with parameters, then currently you have to manually write a "capture" struct wrapping the arguments and marshall/unmarshall that. https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-09/msg00834.html proposed adjusting catch_errors to use gdb::function_view, which would allow passing lambdas with automatic captures. Replace the sync_execution global with a new enum prompt_state tristate When sync_execution (a boolean) is true, it means we're running a foreground command -- we hide the prompt stop listening to input, give the inferior the terminal, then go to the event loop waiting for the target to stop. With multiple independent UIs, we need to track whether each UI is synchronously blocked waiting for the target. IOW, if you do "continue" in one console, that console stops accepting commands, but you should still be free to type other commands in the others consoles. Just simply making sync_execution be per-UI alone not sufficient, because of this in fetch_inferior_event: /* If the inferior was in sync execution mode, and now isn't, restore the prompt (a synchronous execution command has finished, and we're ready for input). */ if (current_ui->async && was_sync && !sync_execution) observer_notify_sync_execution_done (); We'd have to record at entry the "was_sync" state for each UI, not just of the current UI. This patch instead replaces the sync_execution flag by a per-UI tristate flag indicating the command line prompt state: enum prompt_state { /* The command line is blocked simulating synchronous execution. This is used to implement the foreground execution commands ('run', 'continue', etc.). We won't display the prompt and accept further commands until the execution is actually over. */ PROMPT_BLOCKED, /* The command finished; display the prompt before returning back to the top level. */ PROMPT_NEEDED, /* We've displayed the prompt already, ready for input. */ PROMPTED, ; I think the end result is _much_ clearer than the current code, and, it addresses the original motivation too. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * annotate.c: Include top.h. Simplify starting the command event loop All interpreter types (CLI/TUI/MI) print the prompt, and then call start_event_loop. Because we'll need an interpreter hook to display the interpreter-specific prompt before going back to the event loop, without actually starting an event loop, this patch moves the start_event_loop call to common code, and replaces the command_loop hook with a pre_command_look hook, that now just prints the prompt. Make stdin be per UI This commit makes each UI have its own "stdin" stream pointer. This is used to determine whether the "from_tty" argument to execute_command, etc. should be true. Related, this commit makes input_from_terminal_p take an UI parameter, and then avoids the gdb_has_a_terminal in it. gdb_has_a_terminal only returns info on gdb's own main/primary terminal (the real stdin). However, the places that call input_from_terminal_p really want to know is whether the command came from an interactive tty. This patch thus renames input_from_terminal_p to input_interactive_p for clarity, and then makes input_interactive_p check for "set interactive" itself, along with ISATTY, instead of calling gdb_has_a_terminal. Actually, quit_force wants to call input_interactive_p _after_ stdin is closed, we can't call ISATTY that late. So instead we save the result of ISATTY in a field of the UI. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * cli/cli-script.c (read_next_line): Adjust to per-UI stdin. Canceling pagination caused by execution command from command line aborts readline/gdb This fixes: $ ./gdb program -ex "set height 2" -ex "start" ... Split TRY_CATCH into TRY + CATCH This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from this: ~~~ volatile gdb_exception ex; TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } if (ex.reason < 0) { } ~~~ to this: ~~~ TRY { } CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH ~~~ Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and declaring the caught exception in the catch block. This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode (using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step. TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY and the CATCH blocks, like: TRY { } // some code here. CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch. By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more directly to C++'s catch blocks. The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB still builds at each incremental step. END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons: First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere. Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for block, like: #define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \ for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \ exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \ EXCEPTION = exception_none) would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90, which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code. Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will be done in END_CATCH. After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist. IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering C++. gdb/ChangeLog. 2015-03-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * common/common-exceptions.c (struct catcher) <exception>: No longer a pointer to volatile exception. But for the latter, attach_command is called directly from captured_main, and thus misses that waiting. IOW, "run" is running before the attach continuation has run, before the program stops and attach completes. The broken terminal settings are just one symptom of that. PR 20569, segv in follow_exec The following testcases make GDB crash whenever an invalid sysroot is provided, when GDB is unable to find a valid path to the symbol file: gdb.base/catch-syscall.exp gdb.base/execl-update-breakpoints.exp gdb.base/foll-exec-mode.exp gdb.base/foll-exec.exp gdb.base/foll-vfork.exp gdb.base/pie-execl.exp gdb.multi/bkpt-multi-exec.exp gdb.python/py-finish-breakpoint.exp gdb.threads/execl.exp gdb.threads/non-ldr-exc-1.exp gdb.threads/non-ldr-exc-2.exp gdb.threads/non-ldr-exc-3.exp gdb.threads/non-ldr-exc-4.exp gdb.threads/thread-execl.exp The immediate cause of the segv is that follow_exec is passing a NULL argument (the result of exec_file_find) to strlen. However, the problem is deeper than that: follow_exec simply isn't prepared for the case where sysroot translation fails to locate the new executable. Actually all callers of exec_file_find have bugs due to confusion between host and target pathnames. This commit attempts to fix all that. In terms of the testcases that were formerly segv'ing, GDB now prints a warning but continues execution of the new program, so that the tests now mostly FAIL instead. You could argue the FAILs are due to a legitimate problem with the test environment setting up the sysroot translation incorrectly. A new representative test is added which exercises the ne wwarning code path even with native testing. Tested on x86_64 Fedora 23, native and gdbserver. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-10-25 Sandra Loosemore <sandra@codesourcery.com> Luis Machado <lgustavo@codesourcery.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/20569 * exceptions.c (exception_print_same): Moved here from exec.c. * exceptions.h (exception_print_same): Declare. * exec.h: Include "symfile-add-flags.h". Add support for the readnever concept The purpose of this concept is to turn the load of debugging information off, either globally (via the '--readnever' option), or objfile-specific. The implementation proposed here is an extension of the patch distributed with Fedora GDB; looking at the Fedora patch itself and the history, one can see some reasons why it was never resubmitted: - The patch appears to have been introduced as a workaround, at least initially; - The patch is far from perfect, as it simply shunts the load of DWARF debugging information, without really worrying about the other debug format. - Who really does non-symbolic debugging anyways? One use of this feature is when a user simply wants to do the following sequence: attach, dump core, detach. Loading the debugging information in this case is an unnecessary cause of delay. This patch expands the version shipped with Fedora GDB in order to make the feature available for all the debuginfo backends, not only for DWARF. It also implements a per-objfile flag which can be activated by using the "-readnever" command when using the 'add-symbol-file' or 'symbol-file' commands. It's also worth mentioning that this patch tests whether GDB correctly fails to initialize if both '--readnow' and '--readnever' options are passed. Tested on the BuildBot. gdb/ChangeLog: 2017-12-01 Andrew Cagney <cagney@redhat.com> Joel Brobecker <brobecker@adacore.com> Sergio Durigan Junior <sergiodj@redhat.com> * NEWS (Changes since GDB 8.0: Mention new '--readnever' feature. * coffread.c (coff_symfile_read): Do not map over sections with 'coff_locate_sections' if readnever is on. * dwarf2read.c (dwarf2_has_info): Return 0 if readnever is on. * elfread.c (elf_symfile_read): Do not map over sections with 'elf_locate_sections' if readnever is on. * main.c (validate_readnow_readnever): New function. Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchy This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting client-code changes, like these, e.g.: - stb = mem_fileopen (); - fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s", - _("The valid values are:\n"), - regdesc, - _("The default is \"std\".")); + string_file stb; + stb.printf ("%s%s%s", + _("The valid values are:\n"), + regdesc, + _("The default is \"std\".")); In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.) calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried), it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with "&stb". - gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this: struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w"); if (filename == NULL) perror_with_name (filename); cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file); // use file. do_cleanups (cleanups); is replaced with this: stdio_file file; if (!file.open (filename, "w")) perror_with_name (filename); // use file. - odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to call to_fputs / to_write eliminated. - Global null_stream object A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to "nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global stream. - TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated. TUI's ui_file much simplified The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The 'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file inherit from stdio_file. gdb/ChangeLog: 2017-02-02 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (type_as_string): Use string_file. * ada-valprint.c (ada_print_floating): Use string_file. * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_scalar_image) (ada_varobj_get_value_image): Use string_file. * aix-thread.c (aix_thread_extra_thread_info): Use string_file. * arm-tdep.c (_initialize_arm_tdep): Use string_printf. * breakpoint.c (update_inserted_breakpoint_locations) (insert_breakpoint_locations, reattach_breakpoints) (print_breakpoint_location, print_one_detail_ranged_breakpoint) (print_it_watchpoint): Use string_file. Add new command to create extra console/mi UIs With all the previous plumbing in place, it's now easy to add a command that actually creates a new console/mi UI. The intended use case is to make it possible and easy for MI frontends to provide a fully featured GDB console to users, with readline support, command line editing, history, etc., just like if gdb was started on the command line. Currently MI frontends have to try to implement all of that theirselves and make use of "-interpreter-exec console ...", which is far from perfect. If you ever tried Eclipse's gdb console window, you'll know what I mean... Instead of trying to multiplex console through MI, this command let's just leverage all the built in readline/editing support already inside gdb. The plan is for the MI frontend to start GDB in regular console mode, running inside a terminal emulator widget embedded in Eclipse (which already exists, for supporting the shell widget; other frontends have similar widgets), and then tell GDB to run a full MI interpreter on an specified input/output device, independent of the console. My original prototype planned to do things the other way around -- start GDB in MI mode, and then start an extra CLI console on separate tty. I handed over that prototype to Marc Khouzam @ Eclipse CDT, and after experimentation and discussion, we ended up concluding that starting GDB in CLI mode instead was both easier and actually also supported an interesting use case -- connect an Eclipse frontend to a GDB that is already running outside Eclipse. The current usage is "new-ui <interpreter> <tty>". E.g., on a terminal run this scriplet: $ cat gdb-client #!/bin/bash reset tty tail -f /dev/null $ gdb-client /dev/pts/15 Now run gdb on another terminal, and tell it to start a MI interpreter on the tty of the other terminal: ... (gdb) new-ui mi /dev/pts/15 New UI allocated Now back to the the gdb-client terminal, we'll get an MI prompt, ready for MI input: /dev/pts/15 =thread-group-added,id="i1" (gdb) You can also start a new UI running a CLI, with: (gdb) new-ui console /dev/pts/15 Though note that this console won't support readline command editing. It works as if "set editing off" was entered. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * interps.c (set_top_level_interpreter): New function, factored out from captured_main. However, it seems like using TRY/CATCH directly instead ends up producing clearer and easier to debug code. This is what this commit does. Note that removing catch_errors exposes further cleanup opportunities around no longer having to follow catch_errors callback type, and also removes a few cleanups. I didn't do anything to save/restore current_uiout because I think that should be the responsibility of the code that changes current_uiout in the first place. (Another approach could be to make catch_errors a variadic template like: template<typename Function, typename... Args> int catch_errors (const char *errstring, return_mask mask, Function &&func, Args... args); and then with: extern void function_with_args (int, int); extern void function_with_no_args (); calls to the above functions would be wrapped like this: catch_errors ("some error happened", RETURN_MASK_ERROR, function_with_args, arg1, arg2); catch_errors ("some error happened", RETURN_MASK_ERROR, function_with_no_args); but I'm thinking that that doesn't improve much if at all either.) gdb/ChangeLog 2017-10-10 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * breakpoint.c (breakpoint_cond_eval): Change return type to bool and reverse logic.
