Andrew Burgess 46f29a9a26 gdb: Remove a VEC from gdbsupport/btrace-common.h
Converts a VEC into a std::vector in gdbsupport/btrace-common.h.  This
commit just performs a mechanical conversion and doesn't do any
refactoring.  One consequence of this is that the std::vector must
actually be a pointer to std::vector as it is placed within a union.
It might be possible in future to refactor to a class hierarchy and
remove the need for a union, but I'd rather have that be a separate
change to make it easier to see the evolution of the code.

Sergio Durigan Junior 381beca614 Improve ptrace-error detection on Linux targets
In Fedora GDB, we carry the following patch:

  8ac06474ff/f/gdb-attach-fail-reasons-5of5.patch

Its purpose is to try to detect a specific scenario where SELinux's
'deny_ptrace' option is enabled, which prevents GDB from ptrace'ing in
order to debug the inferior (PTRACE_ATTACH and PTRACE_TRACEME will
fail with EACCES in this case).

I like the idea of improving error detection and providing more
information to the user (a simple "Permission denied" can be really
frustrating), but I don't fully agree with the way the patch was
implemented: it makes GDB link against libselinux only for the sake of
consulting the 'deny_ptrace' setting, and then prints a warning if
ptrace failed and this setting is on.

My first thought (and attempt) was to make GDB print a generic warning
when a ptrace error happened; this message would just point the user
to our documentation, where she could find more information about
possible causes for the error (and try to diagnose/fix the problem).
This proved to be too simple, and I was convinced that it is actually
a good idea to go the extra kilometre and try to pinpoint the specific
problem (or problems) preventing ptrace from working, as well as
provide useful suggestions on how the user can fix things.

Here is the patch I came up with.  It implements a new function,
'linux_ptrace_restricted_fail_reason', which does a few things to
check what's wrong with ptrace:

  - It dlopen's "libselinux.so.1" and checks if the "deny_ptrace"
    option is enabled.

  - It reads the contents of "/proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope" and
    checks if it's different than 0.

For each of these checks, if it succeeds, the user will see a message
informing about the restriction in place, and how it can be disabled.
For example, if "deny_ptrace" is enabled, the user will see:

  # gdb /usr/bin/true

In case "/proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope" is > 0:

  # gdb /usr/bin/true
  ...
  Starting program: /usr/bin/true
  warning: Could not trace the inferior process.
  warning: ptrace: Operation not permitted
  The Linux kernel's Yama ptrace scope is in effect, which can prevent
  GDB from using 'ptrace'.  You can disable it by executing (as root):

    echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

  If you are debugging the inferior remotely, the ptrace restriction(s) need
  to be disabled in the target system (e.g., where GDBserver is running).
  During startup program exited with code 127.
  (gdb)

If both restrictions are enabled, both messages will show up.

This works for gdbserver as well, and actually fixes a latent bug I
found: when ptrace is restricted, gdbserver would hang due to an
unchecked ptrace call:

(I decided to keep all the other messages, even though I find them a
bit distracting).

If GDB can't determine the cause for the failure, it will still print
the generic error message which tells the user to check our
documentation:

  There might be restrictions preventing ptrace from working.  Please see
  the appendix "Linux kernel ptrace restrictions" in the GDB documentation
  for more details.
  If you are debugging the inferior remotely, the ptrace restriction(s) need
  to be disabled in the target system (e.g., where GDBserver is running).

This means that the patch expands our documentation and creates a new
appendix section named "Linux kernel ptrace restrictions", with
sub-sections for each possible restriction that might be in place.

Notice how, on every message, we instruct the user to "do the right
thing" if gdbserver is being used.  This is because if the user
started gdbserver *before* any ptrace restriction was in place, and
then, for some reason, one or more restrictions get enabled, then the
error message will be displayed both on gdbserver *and* on the
connected GDB.  Since the user will be piloting GDB, it's important to
explicitly say that the ptrace restrictions are enabled in the target,
where gdbserver is running.

The current list of possible restrictions is:

  - SELinux's 'deny_ptrace' option (detected).

  - YAMA's /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope setting (detected).

  - seccomp on Docker containers (I couldn't find how to detect).

It's important to mention that all of this is Linux-specific; as far
as I know, SELinux, YAMA and seccomp are Linux-only features.

I tested this patch locally, on my Fedora 30 machine (actually, a
Fedora Rawhide VM), but I'm not proposing a testcase for it because of
the difficulty of writing one.

Ulrich Weigand abf516c693 Remove Cell Broadband Engine debugging support
This patch implements removal of Cell/B.E. support, including
- Support for the spu-*-* target
- Support for native stand-alone SPU debugging
- Support for integrated debugging of combined PPU/SPU applications
- Remote debugging (gdbserver) support for all the above.

The patch also removes the TARGET_OBJECT_SPU target object type,
as this is available only on Cell/B.E. targets, including
- Native Linux support
- Core file support (including core file generation)
- Remote target support, including removal of the qXfer:spu:read
  and qXfer:spu:write remote protocal packets and associated
  support in gdbserver.

Tom Tromey 268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory.  The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top.  This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory.  However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

Tom Tromey b0319eaaf9 Use find_thread_in_random in select_event_lwp
I noticed that find_thread_in_random duplicates the code in
find_thread_in_random, so this patch changes the latter to use the
former.

There are two other spots in gdb that do this, but to unify all of
them would require switching some code from using the "iterate over"
idiom to using iterators.

Another possible improvement is that find_thread_in_random could be
made single-pass using reservoir sampling.

Tested by the buildbot.

Tom Tromey eedc3f4f0a Replace throw_exception with throw in some cases
This replaces throw_exception with "throw;" when possible.  This was
written by script.  The rule that is followed is that uses of the
form:

   catch (... &name)
     {
       ...
       throw_exception (name);
     }

... can be rewritten.  This should always be safe, because exceptions
are caught by const reference, and therefore can't be modified in the
body of the catch.

due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.

Pedro Franco de Carvalho 0570503dd3 Use linux_get_auxv to get AT_PHDR in the PPC stub
This patch fixes a build error due to a call to ppc_get_auxv that was
left over after linux_get_hwcap and linux_get_hwcap2 were introduced
in:

974c89e088 gdbserver: Add
linux_get_hwcap

Because the missing call fetched AT_PHDR and not AT_HWCAP,
linux_get_auxv is now visible.

This use also required ppc_get_auxv to return a status variable
indicating that the AT_PHDR entry was not found separately from the
actual value of of the auxv entry.  Therefore, the new linux_get_auxv
function is changed to return a status variable and write the entry
value to a pointer passed as an argument.

Note that linux_get_hwcap and linux_get_hwcap2 still use the return
value as both an indicator of that the entry wasn't found and as the
actual value of the entry.

Add the pauth registers to the regset lists.

Add a new regset type OPTIONAL_REGS which allows for the regset read to fail.
Once the read fails, it will not be checked again.  This allows targets with
optional features to keep a single static regset_info structure.

The recent BP/WP changes for AArch64 swapping the order in add_lwp()
so that the process was added before the lwp. This was due to the lwp
creation requiring the process data.

This also needs changing in linux_attach().

Also add additional checks to make sure cannot attach to the same
process twice. Add test case for this - do this by splitting
attach.exp into distinct pass and error case sections.

Fixes gdb.server/ext-attach.exp on Aarch64.

Joel Brobecker 42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header

Alan Hayward 754e316898 AArch64: Racy: Don't set empty set of hardware BPs/WPs on new thread
On some heavily loaded AArch64 boxes, GDB will sometimes hang forever when
the inferior creates a thread.  This hang happens inside the kernel during
the ptrace call to set hardware watchpoints or hardware breakpoints.
Currently, GDB will always set hw wp/bp at the start of each thread even if
there are none set in the process.

This patch works around the issue by avoiding setting hw wp/bp if there
are none set for the process.

On an effected machine, this fix drastically reduces the racy nature of the
gdb.threads test set.  I ran the entire gdb test suite across all processors
for 100 iterations, then ran the results through the racy tests script.
Without the patch, 58 .exp files in gdb.threads were marked as racy.  After
the patch this reduced to the same ~14 tests as the non effected boxes.

Clearly GDB will still be subject to hangs on an effect box if hw wp/bp's are
used prior to creating inferior threads on a heavily loaded system.

To enable this in gdbserver, the sequence in gdbserver add_lwp() is switched
to the same as gdb order as gdb, to ensure the thread is registered before
calling new_thread().  This allows aarch64_linux_new_thread() to read the
ptid.

Tom Tromey d105de22fc Fix use-after-free in gdbserver
-fsanitize=address pointed out a use-after-free in gdbserver.  In
particular, handle_detach could reference "process" after it was
deleted by detach_inferior.  Avoiding this also necessitated changing
target_ops::join to take a pid rather than a process_info*.

Tested by the buildbot using a few of the gdbserver builders.

Vyacheslav Barinov 1b919490e8 Warn if /proc is not accessible
There's a buildroot where I want to debug a binary, and I tried to
connect to it from outside, but got very weird errors like
architecture mismatch or protocol errors.  At last, after switching on
'--debug' for gdbserver I found a message 'Can't open /proc/pid/'
message and suddenly found that I forgot to mount procfs in my
buildroot.

Make discovering the problem easier by making GDB / GDBserver warn
(even without --debug) if /proc can not be accessed.

Native debugging:

 (gdb) start
 Temporary breakpoint 1 at 0x400835: file test.c, line 10.
 Starting program: /tmp/test
 warning: /proc is not accessible.

GDBserver/remote debugging:

Simon Marchi e6a58aa8a7 Add xml_escape_text_append and use it
[This patch should go on top of "linux_qxfer_libraries_svr4: Use
 std::string", I should have sent them together as a series.]

I noticed that linux_qxfer_libraries_svr4 used xml_escape_text, which
returns an std::string.  That string is then copied into a larger
buffer.  It would be more efficient if we had a version of
xml_escape_text which appended to an existing string instead of
returning a new one.  This is what this patch does.

I manually verified that the output of linux_qxfer_libraries_svr4 didn't
change before/after the patch.

Markus Metzger de6242d307 btrace, gdbserver: remove the to_supports_btrace target method
Remove the to_supports_btrace target method and instead rely on detecting errors
when trying to enable recording.  This will also provide a suitable error
message explaining why recording is not possible.

For remote debugging, gdbserver will now always advertise branch tracing related
packets.  When talking to an older GDB, this will cause GDB to try to enable
branch tracing and gdbserver to report a suitable error message every time.

An older gdbserver will not advertise branch tracing related packets if the
one-time check failed, so a newer GDB with this patch will fail to enable branch
tracing at remote_enable_btrace() rather than at btrace_enable().  The error
message is the same in both cases so there should be no user-visible change.

Simon Marchi 4d9b86e175 Make linux_ptrace_attach_fail_reason return an std::string
This patch makes linux_ptrace_attach_fail_reason and
linux_ptrace_attach_fail_reason_string return std::string.  It also
replaces usages of struct buffer with std::string.  This allows getting
rid of a cleanup in in linux_ptrace_attach_fail_reason_string and
simplifies the code in general.

Something that looks odd to me is that in
linux_ptrace_attach_fail_reason, if the two messages are appended, there
is no separating space or \n, so the result won't be very nice.  I left
it as-is for now though.

Yao Qi 9a70f35c8d Mark register unavailable when PTRACE_PEEKUSER fails
As described in PR 18749, GDB/GDBserver may get an error on accessing
memory or register because the thread may disappear.  However, some
path doesn't expect the error.  This patch fixes this problem by
marking the register unavailable when PTRACE_PEEKUSER fails instead
of throwing error.

Replace with find_thread.  Writing a lambda inline in directly in the if
conditions would be a bit messy, so I chose to assign them to variables
instead.
