Alan Modra 5474d94f03 dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executable
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's
.bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would
require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in
the shared library.  Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into
the executable to gain a small speed improvement.

The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy
in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole.  This patch
cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes
read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force.

The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to
use dynamic bss variables.

Alan Modra 9d19e4fdb7 Put .dynbss and .rel.bss shortcuts in main elf hash table
Also, create .rel{,a}.bss for PIEs on all targets, not just x86.

H.J. Lu 4deb8f714d Properly hide hidden versioned symbol in executable
A hidden versioned symbol in executable should be forced local if it is
locally defined, not referenced by shared library and not exported.  We
must do it before _bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms.

Now that all targets creating .rel.plt/.rela.plt use the ELF hash
table shortcut srelplt, the generic ELF code can set up DT_RELSZ/
DT_RELASZ and DT_REL/DT_RELA for targets that don't want PLT relocs
included in those tags.

Alan Modra ce558b89b1 Delete duplicate target short-cuts to dynamic sections
We'd like to have the elf_link_hash_table srelplt field rather than
some private target field used to save short-cuts to a PLT relocation
section.  This save a little space but mainly is so that the generic
ELF code can access the field.  Ditto for other dynamic sections.

This patch stop --gc-sections elf_gc_sweep_symbol localizing symbols
that ought to remain global.

The difficulty with always descending into output section statements
is that symbols defined by the script in such statements don't have
a bfd section when lang_do_assignments runs early in the link process.
There are two approaches to curing this problem.  Either we can
create the bfd section early, or we can use a special section.  This
patch takes the latter approach and uses bfd_und_section.  (Creating
bfd sections early results in changed output section order, and thus
lots of testsuite failures.  You can't create all output sections
early to ensure proper ordering as KEEP then stops empty sections
from being stripped.)

The wrinkle with this approach is that some code that runs at
gc-sections time needs to be made aware of the odd defined symbols
using bfd_und_section.

Joel Brobecker 08ce1d723e fix undefined reference to bfd_link_plugin_object_p during link
When configured with the default options, GDB currently fails to link,
due to an undefined reference to bfd_link_plugin_object_p, coming from
elflink.c:

           || (abfd->plugin_format == bfd_plugin_unknown
              && bfd_link_plugin_object_p (abfd))
    #endif

This is because BFD_SUPPORTS_PLUGINS is always defined. It is its value

be better than bfd_size_type for a number of things in elf-strtab.c.

being set up.

Alan Modra 1a72702bb3 Return void from linker callbacks
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always
return true, so any code handling a false return is dead.  What's
more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen,
and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c.
The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition
error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic
failure".

This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always
return true.  I kept the return status for "notice" because that one
does happen to need to return "out of memory".

H.J. Lu b95a0a3177 Skip an archive element if not added by linker
During archive rescan to resolve symbol references for files added by
LTO, linker add_archive_element callback is called to check if an
archive element should added.  After all IR symbols have been claimed,
linker won't claim new IR symbols and shouldn't add the LTO archive
element.  This patch updates linker add_archive_element callback to
return FALSE when seeing an LTO archive element during rescan and
changes ELF linker to skip such archive element.

When check_relocs is called after gc-sections has run,
_bfd_elf_link_create_dynstrtab may be called with an dynamic object
and hash_table->dynobj may be NULL.  We may not set dynobj, an input
file holding linker created dynamic sections to the dynamic object,
which has its own dynamic sections.  We need to find a normal input
file to hold linker created sections if possible.  Otherwise ld will
crash during LTO input rescan when linker created dynamic section
overrides input dynamic section.

Maciej W. Rozycki 1f599d0e7b ELF/LD: Avoid producing hidden and internal dynamic symbols
Always turn hidden and internal symbols which have a dynamic index into
local ones.  This is required by the the ELF gABI[1]:

"A hidden symbol contained in a relocatable object must be either
removed or converted to STB_LOCAL binding by the link-editor when the
relocatable object is included in an executable file or shared object."

"An internal symbol contained in a relocatable object must be either
removed or converted to STB_LOCAL binding by the link-editor when the
relocatable object is included in an executable file or shared object."

The ELF linker usually respects this requirement, however in the case
where a dynamic symbol has been preallocated due to a reference of the
default export class aka visibility from the object being linked, and
then merged with a hidden or internal symbol definition from within the
same object, then the original export class is carried over to the
output dynamic symbol table, because while merging the generic ELF
linker only converts affected dynamic symbols to local when they are
defined or referenced by the object being linked and a dynamic object
involved in the link both at a time.

The dynamic symbol produced confuses then the dynamic loader at the run
time -- the hidden or internal export class is ignored and the symbol
follows preemption rules as with the default export class.

In the MIPS target it happens when `mips_elf_record_global_got_symbol'
creates a dynamic symbol when a call relocation is encountered.
Additionally if the undefined symbol referred by such a relocation does
specify the intended export class, then a local dynamic symbol is
created instead, which is harmless and allowed, but useless.  Normally
no local dynamic symbols are created, except for a single dummy one at
the beginning.

Correct the problem by removing the extra check for a dynamic symbol
being defined or referenced by the object being linked and a dynamic
object involved in the link both at a time.  The test cases included
cover the internal and hidden symbol cases, as well as a protected
symbol for a reference, the handling of which is unchanged by this fix.
Both cases described above are covered, that is where an internal or
hidden dynamic symbol is produced and where a local one is.

NB this change affects CRIS results where some symbols in the static
table produced in a final link are now converted from STV_HIDDEN to
STB_LOCAL.  This happens whenever the `elf_backend_hide_symbol' handler
is called, so the affected symbols must have been chosen for entering
into the dynamic symbol table, except in these test cases no such symbol
table is produced.  In fully linked binaries the static symbol table is
only used for debugging though, so such a change is fine.

A configure option, --enable-elf-stt-common, is added to gas to specify
whether ELF assembler should generate common symbols with the STT_COMMON
type by default.

Since BSF_KEEP_G is never used, it is renamed to BSF_ELF_COMMON for ELF

There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs.  This
patch adds an "output_type" field:

The hidden versioned symbol can only be merged with the versioned
symbol with the same symbol version.  _bfd_elf_merge_symbol should
check the symbol version before merging the new hidden versioned

copy any references to the hidden versioned symbol.   We need to
bind a symbol locally when linking executable if it is locally defined,
hidden versioned, not referenced by shared library and not exported.

Missing symbol version section is a run-time problem only if it will

This patch uses ELF strtab with GC and suffix merging support to create
ELF .strtab section.  There is some small memory overhead to use ELF
strtab:

Saving on libc.so from glibc is much more since libc.so has many alias

This patch adds --compress-debug-sections=[none|zlib|zlib-gnu|zlib-gabi]
to ld for ELF targets to support generating compressed DWARF debug
sections.  We always generate .zdebug_* section since section names have
been finalized and they can't be changed easily when compression is
being performed.

Address of protected data defined in the shared library may be external,
i.e., due to copy relocation.  By default, linker backend checks if
relocations against protected data symbols are valid for building shared
library and issues an error if relocation isn't allowed.  The new option
override linker backend default.  When -z noextern-protected-data is used,
updates on protected data symbols by another module won't be visibile
to the resulting shared library.  This option is specific to ELF/i386
and ELF/x86-64.

Allows .dynbss copy of shared library protected visibility variables
if they are read-only.

To recap: Copying a variable from a shared library into an executable's
.dynbss is an old hack invented for non-PIC executables, to avoid the
text relocations you'd otherwise need to access a shared library
variable.  This works with ELF shared libraries because global
symbols can be overridden.  The trouble is that protected visibility
symbols can't be overridden.  A shared library will continue to access
it's own protected visibility variable while the executable accesses a
copy.  If either the shared library or the executable updates the
value then the copy diverges from the original.  This is wrong since
there is only one definition of the variable in the application.

So I made the linker report an error on attempting to copy protected
visibility variables into .dynbss.  However, you'll notice the above
paragraph contains an "If".  An application that does not modify the
variable value remains correct even though two copies of the variable
exist.  The linker can detect this situation if the variable was
defined in a read-only section.

Senthil Kumar Selvaraj d422d1c433 Garbage collecting debug sections
I noticed that _bfd_elf_gc_mark_extra_sections attempts to unmark
related debug sections when it finds an unmarked code section.
When it finds .text.foo is unmarked, for example, it removes
.debug_line.text.foo as well (using the section name as a suffix
match check.

However, it bails out after finding one such section.

I was having a little closer look at what is going on here and noticed
that HJ unconditionally emits a NULL STT_FILE symbol before emitting
forced local symbols.  That means we really don't need a second pass
over forced local symbols.  The only reason for two passes is when
some forced local symbol can be emitted before the NULL STT_FILE.  So
I set about removing the second pass, updating the testsuite all over
again.  It's also unnecessary to emit the NULL STT_FILE when no
previous file symbol has been emitted.

Alan Modra ce875075f9 PR ld/17973 LTO file syms
LTO output objects have an STT_FILE symbol using the name of the file,
a temporary file.  This results in executables that can't be exactly
reproduced, so the file name needs to be dropped.  We don't want to
lose all file symbols when linking a mix of lto and non-lto objects as
a file symbol can be used to figure which source file generated a
given local symbol.  So lto output objects need to be marked.

I chose to mark lto output objects with a new bfd flag.  This flag is
also used to fix a bug in the link-once handling;  An object being
loaded after "loading_lto_outputs" is set might be one extracted from
an archive to satisfy new references from lto objects, not an lto
object itself.

The new flag is copied from archive to elements, and the same done
for no_export.  This fixes a bug in that --exclude-libs doesn't work
with thin archives.  I'm not completely happy with this part of the
patch and may revist this to avoid the hack in
_bfd_look_for_bfd_in_cache.

Alan Modra 6346d5ca43 Fallout from recent bfd_reloc_outofrange changes
Commit ec93045b and cd21f5da introduced a large number of tic4x and
tic54x regressions, due to the new checks being wrong for targets
with octets_per_byte != 1.  To fix that I introduced a new
bfd_get_section_limit_octets and performed the check on octets rather
than byte adresses, reducing the number of bfd_octets_per_byte calls.
bfd_octets_per_byte is rather expensive..

I then wondered why the same bfd_reloc_outofrange check added to
bfd_perform_relocation wasn't also added to bfd_install_relocation.
The two functions are virtually identical and ought to remain that
way.  However, adding the same check to bfd_install_relocation
resulted in ld-elf "FAIL Link eh-group.o to eh-group" on many ELF
targets, including x64_64-linux.  The reason being that eh-group.o
has NONE relocs at the end of a section, and most targets give NONE
relocs a non-zero size.  So if we are to keep the new outofrange
check it appears that NONE relocs must have a zero size.

Copy relocs are used in a scheme to avoid dynamic text relocations in
non-PIC executables that refer to variables defined in shared
libraries.  The idea is to have the linker define any such variable in
the executable, with a copy reloc copying the initial value, then have
both the executable and shared library refer to the executable copy.
If the shared library defines the variable as protected then we have
two copies of the variable being used.

Currently, section ordering differs a little for non-loaded reloc
sections output by ld -emit-relocs or ld -r and that after passing
such objects through objcopy.  Not that it really matters, but it
would be better for a simple objcopy to produce an unchanged output
object file.  Also, section headers are put somewhere in the middle of
the non-loaded sections, again slightly differently for ld and
objcopy.  This patch fixes these discrepancies and puts section
headers last, which is where gold puts them, and is where
bfd_from_remote_memory wrongly assumed they will be found.

Alan Modra da44f4e546 Index PowerPC64 linker generated .eh_frame in .eh_frame_hdr
I noticed recently that .eh_frame FDEs generated by the linker for
call stubs and .glink weren't being indexed in .eh_frame_hdr, due to
bfd_elf_discard_info being run before the linker generated .eh_frame
sections were available for parsing.  This patch moves code around in
elf64-ppc.c and ppc64elf.em to avoid that problem.

Another problem fixed here is that --gc-sections parses .eh_frame
early, and the existing machinery allows only one go at parsing the
.eh_frame sections.  That resulted in the linker generated .eh_frame
CIEs not being merged and no .eh_frame_hdr index entries for those
FDEs.  It turns out that all the info from parsing .eh_frame is
attached to the section, so order of parsing isn't important, and
after parsing sec_info_type being set will prevent a section being
parsed again.  At least, when parsing doesn't hit an error.  So there
isn't really any need for "parsed_eh_frame".  "merge_cies" is also
redundant, which means _bfd_elf_{begin,end}_eh_frame_parsing can also
disappear.

Alan Modra 13e570f80c Fix LTO vs. COFF archives
Avoid scan of symbols on objects in coff archives since we don't need
to do anything special with common symbols.  The scan is quite useless,
and breaks LTO due to slim LTO objects not having symbols available
until after the plugin has claimed them.  Instead we can add objects
based on their archive symbol map.

Also, rip out the archive symbol hash table used by the generic
linker.  Using a hash breaks one feature of unix archive linking;
The first object file in an archive defining any given symbol should
be the object extracted to satisfy that symbol.  What's more a hash
isn't much faster except in pathological cases where object file
ordering causes many scans of the archive.  See the comment which I'm
removing from elf_link_add_archive_symbols.

Finally, tidy elflink.c archive handling a little.

Alan Modra bffebb6ba5 Copy st_other for linker script symbol assignments
This fixes a problem seen on powerpc64le ELFv2 when creating a
function symbol alias with ld --defsym.  st_other needs to be copied
from the source symbol to the alias in order to set up the local entry
offset for the alias.  I decided to make this change in the generic
ELF code rather than in elf64-ppc.c since it looks like other targets
that use st_other bits might benefit too.

Alan Modra 53291d1f16 powerpc relax_section and section contents cache
This patch provides a means for backend relax_section support to
increase the size of a section without needing to reallocate
section contents.  This helps reduce memory usage when the added space
does not need to be written in relax_section, as is the case for
powerpc.  Writing the stubs later means a few tweaks are needed in the
powerpc relocate_section function, but also removes some code
duplication since the extra ld -r relocs can be written there too.

After resolving a versioned reference, foo@VER1, to a default versioned
definition, foo@@VER1, from a shared object, we also merge it with
the existing regular default symbol definition, foo.  When foo is IFUNC
and foo@@VER1 aren't, we will merge 2 incompatible definitions.  This
patch avoids merging foo@@VER1 definition with foo definition if
one is IFUNC and the other isn't.

There's no real need to emit these always: They're needed only if we
indeed want to emit a localized symbol. Hence defer emission until we
at least did the basic early checks that would lead to no such symbol
getting emitted. This in particular avoids emitting such a symbol in
the majority of (if not all) "ld -r" cases.

I hope my set of cross build tests caught all the test cases needing
adjustment - please forgive if I missed a few.
