Tom de Vries 4ccdfbec50 [gdb/testsuite] Add -wrap pattern flag to gdb_test_multiple
Currently, in order to rewrite:
...
gdb_test <command> <pattern> <message>
...
using gdb_test_multiple, we get:
...
gdb_test_multiple <command> <message> {
    -re "\[\r\n\]*(?:<pattern>)\[\r\n\]+$gdb_prompt $" {
    	pass $gdb_test_name
    }
}
...

Add a '-wrap pattern flag to gdb_test_multiple, that wraps the regexp
pattern as gdb_test wraps its message argument.

This allows us to rewrite into the more compact:
...
gdb_test_multiple <command> <message> {
    -re -wrap <pattern> {
        pass $gdb_test_name
    }
}
...

Tested on x86_64-linux.

	* lib/gdb.exp (gdb_test_multiple): Add -wrap pattern flag.
	* gdb.reverse/step-precsave.exp: Rewrite gdb_test_multiple containing
	kfail using -wrap pattern flag and convenience variable
	gdb_test_name.

Tom de Vries d6e7631356 [gdb/testsuite] Add KFAIL for missing support of reverse-debugging xsave
Normally the gdb.reverse/*.exp test-cases pass on my system (apart from the
record/23188 KFAIL for gdb.reverse/step-precsave.exp). But when specifying
GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.tune.hwcaps=-XSAVEC_Usable to force glibc to use
_dl_runtime_resolve_xsave instead of _dl_runtime_resolve_xsavec, we run into
1054 FAILs like this:
...
(gdb) PASS: gdb.reverse/sigall-reverse.exp: b gen_HUP

Process record does not support instruction 0xfae64 at address \

  /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2^M
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.reverse/sigall-reverse.exp: get signal ABRT

The problem is that the xsave instruction is not supported in
reverse-debugging (PR record/25038).

Tom de Vries 060b3ab4ed [gdb/testsuite] Fix incomplete regexps in step-precsave.exp
The commit 68f7d34dd5 "[gdb/testsuite] Add KFAIL for missing support of

Joel Brobecker 42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Markus Metzger 1d509aa625 infrun: step through indirect branch thunks
With version 7.3 GCC supports new options

   -mindirect-branch=<choice>
   -mfunction-return=<choice>

The choices are:

    keep                behaves as before
    thunk               jumps through a thunk
    thunk-external jumps through an external thunk
    thunk-inline jumps through an inlined thunk

For thunk and thunk-external, GDB would, on a call to the thunk, step into
the thunk and then resume to its caller assuming that this is an
undebuggable function. On a return thunk, GDB would stop inside the
thunk.

Make GDB step through such thunks instead.

Before:
    Temporary breakpoint 1, main ()
        at gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.c:37
    37        x = apply (inc, 41);
    (gdb) s
    apply (op=0x80483e6 <inc>, x=41)
        at gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.c:29
    29        return op (x);
    (gdb)
    30      }

After:
    Temporary breakpoint 1, main ()
        at gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.c:37
    37        x = apply (inc, 41);
    (gdb) s
    apply (op=0x80483e6 <inc>, x=41)
        at gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.c:29
    29        return op (x);
    (gdb)
    inc (x=41) at gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.c:23
    23        return x + 1;

This is independent of the step-mode. In order to step into the thunk,
you would need to use stepi.

When stepping over an indirect call thunk, GDB would first step through
the thunk, then recognize that it stepped into a sub-routine and resume to
the caller (of the thunk). Not sure whether this is worth optimizing.

Thunk detection is implemented via gdbarch. I implemented the methods for
IA. Other architectures may run into unexpected fails.

The tests assume a fixed number of instruction steps to reach a thunk.
This depends on the compiler as well as the architecture. They may need
adjustments when we add support for more architectures. Or we can simply
drop those tests that cover being able to step into thunks using
instruction stepping.

When using an older GCC, the tests will fail to build and will be reported
as untested:

    Running .../gdb.base/step-indirect-call-thunk.exp ...
    gdb compile failed, \
    gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-mindirect-branch=thunk'
    gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-mfunction-return=thunk'

Ruslan Kabatsayev adf8243ba9 Make tests expect [ \t]+ pattern instead of \t for "info reg" command
This will allow to format output of "info reg" command as we wish,
without breaking the tests. In particular, it'll let us correctly align
raw and natural values of the registers using spaces instead of current
badly-working approach with tabs.

This change is forwards- and backwards-compatible, so that the amended
tests will work in the same way before and after reformatting patches
(unless the tests check formatting, of course, but I've not come across
any such tests).

Some tests already used this expected pattern, so they didn't
even have to be modified. Others are changed by this patch.

I've checked this on a i386 system, with no noticeable differences in
test results, so at least on i386 nothing seems to be broken by this.

Luis Machado 8b00c17616 Refactor gdb.reverse/insn-reverse.c
Changes in v2:

- Renamed arch-specific files to insn-reverse-<arch>.c.
- Adjusted according to reviews.

This patch prepares things for an upcoming testcase for record/replay support
on x86. As is, gdb.reverse/insn-reverse.c is divided into sections guarded by
a few #if blocks, and right now it only handles arm/aarch64.

If we move forward with requiring more tests for record/replay on different
architectures, i think this has the potential to become cluttered with a lot
of differing arch-specific code in the same file.

I've broken up the main file into other files with arch-specific bits
(insn-reverse-<arch>.c). The main file will hold the generic pieces that will
take care of calling the tests.

The arch-specific c files are then included at the top of the generic c file.

I've also added a generic initialize function since we need to run pre-test
checks on x86 to make sure the rdrand/rdseed instructions are supported,
otherwise we will run into a SIGILL.

The arch-specific files will implement their own initialize function with
whatever makes sense. Right now the aarch64 and arm files have an empty
initialization function.

Does this look reasonable?

gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:

Luis Machado 5b362f04b2 Fix more cases of improper test names
I noticed more occurrences of improper test names. The rather mechanical,
tedious and large patch below addresses, hopefully, most of the leftover cases.

As usual, another pair of eyes is welcome to check if missed something or did
an invalid substitution.

This patch also fixes the prepare_for_testing calls to pass proper test names.

Luis Machado 84c93cd5f1 Fixup testcases outputting own name as a test name and standardize failed compilation messages
Changes in v3:

- Adjusted some testcases where the message "failed to compile" was not unique.

Changes in v2:

- Addressed comments from reviewers.
- Fixed spurious whitespaces.
- Changed compilation failure messages that included source/binary paths to
  ones that are short and deterministic.

---

Another bit of cleanup to the testsuite. We have a number of tests that are
not honoring the rule of not outputting their own name as a test name.

I fixed up all the offenders i could find with the following regular
expression:

"(xfail|kfail|kpass|fail|pass|unsupported|untested) ([A-Za-z0-9]+|\\\$(.)*testfile(.)*)\.exp$"

Luis Machado bc6c7af4a2 Fix test names starting with uppercase output by basic functions
The following patch is based on the previous patch i sent and handles cases of
test names that start with an uppercase letter. Test names should start with
lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA
etc.

This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail,
kfail, kpass, fail, pass, unsupported, untested and also names set with the
pattern "set test" and "set testname".

Pedro Alves 01d3dedf60 Fix PR gdb/19187 (process record over a fork causes internal error)
Right after a fork is detected, we detach breakpoints from the child
(detach_breakpoints), which calls into target_remove_breakpoint with
inferior_ptid pointing at the child process, but leaves the breakpoint
marked inserted (in the parent).

The problem is that record-full.c always deletes all knowledge of the
breakpoint. Then when we later really delete the breakpoint from the
parent, we fail the assertion, since the breakpoint is unexpectedly
not found in the record-full.c breakpoint table.

The fix is simply to not forget about the breakpoint if we're
detaching it from a fork child.

Yao Qi 4a7e075c3f Tweak gdb.reverse/step-precsave.exp and gdb.reverse/step-reverse.exp
I see the following test fail in arm-linux with -marm and -fomit-frame-pointer,

 step
 callee () at /home/yao/SourceCode/gnu/gdb/git/gdb/testsuite/gdb.reverse/step-reverse.c:27
 27      }                       /* RETURN FROM CALLEE */
 (gdb) step
 main () at /home/yao/SourceCode/gnu/gdb/git/gdb/testsuite/gdb.reverse/step-reverse.c:58
 58 callee(); /* STEP INTO THIS CALL */
 (gdb) FAIL: gdb.reverse/step-precsave.exp: reverse step into fn call

As we can see, the "step" has already stepped into the function callee,
but in the last line. The second "step" attempts to step to function
body, but it goes out of callee, which isn't expected.

The program is compiled with -marm and -fomit-frame-pointer, the
function callee is prologue-less, because nothing needs to be saved
on stack,

(gdb) disassemble callee
Dump of assembler code for function callee:
   0x00010680 <+0>:	movw	r3, #2364	; 0x93c

   0x000106a0 <+32>:	mov	r0, r3
   0x000106a4 <+36>:	bx	lr

program stops at the 0x106a0 (passed the epilogue) after the first
"step". When second "step" is executed, the stepping range is
[0x10680-0x106a0], which starts from the first instruction of function
callee (because it doesn't have prologue).

infrun: TARGET_WAITKIND_STOPPED^M
infrun: stop_pc = 0x10698^M
infrun: stepping inside range [0x10680-0x106a0]

When program goes out of the range, it stops at the caller of callee,
and test fails. IOW, if function callee has prologue, the stepping
range won't start from the first instruction of the function, and
program stops at the prologue and test passes.

IMO, GDB does nothing wrong, but test shouldn't expect the program
stops in callee after the second "step". I decide to fix test rather
than GDB. In this patch, I change to test to do one "step", and check
the program is still in callee, then, do multiple "step" until program
goes out of the callee.

 (gdb) FAIL: gdb.reverse/finish-reverse-bkpt.exp: reverse-finish from void_func trips breakpoint at entry

The test assumes that brekapoints on "void_func" and "*void_func" are
set on different places because of function prologue. However, on
aarch64-linux, there is no prologue in void_func, so two breakpoints
are set at the same place (0x4007a0).

it is not the point of this test. The goal of this test is to test

the program hits.

Yao Qi e6359af3fd Simplify gdb.reverse/until-reverse.c
Nowadays, functions fprintf, printf and malloc are executed in

however, I can't figure out how these functions (fprintf, printf and
malloc) are related to the test itself. marker1 is a function from
shared library too so we don't need these complicated libc functions
at all. IMO, recording the instructions in these libc functions has
nothing to do with the test itself except slow down the test. This
patch is to remove the usage of fprintf and printf, and also move
malloc to a dead code path.

Simon Marchi 2151ccc56c Always organize test artifacts in a directory hierarchy
When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a
different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it
was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An
artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test.

Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all
over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If
everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory
(which we already do).

At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles
useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for
cleaning.

What do you think?

Pedro Alves de1c2c5223 Bump timeouts for a couple gdb.reverse/*-precsave.exp tests
The buildbot shows that PPC64 and x86_64 builders, both native and
extended-remote gdbserver frequently timeout these tests.
until-precsave.exp times out on my x86_64 occasionally as well.
Inspecting the logs, we see that if we waited some more, the tests
would pass.

Simply bump until-precsave.exp timeouts further, and apply the same
treatment to step-precsave.exp.

Yao Qi 4931af25b8 New proc is_aarch64_target
Some tests expect the the target is aarch64, but checking target
triplet is not accurate, because target triplet can be aarch64 but

This patch addes a new proc is_aarch64_target which returns true

Yao Qi f6bb7db35d New gdb.reverse test case for aarch64 instructions
This patch adds a test case to test the process record for some of
aarch64 instructions.

In each function, GDB turns on process record, and single step until
program goes to the end of the function. Then, single step backward.
In each of forward single step and backward single step, the contents
of registers are saved, and test compares them. If there is any
differences, a FAIL is emitted.

The test is flexible, and we can test other instructions easily in the
future.

Yao Qi 45fd756caf Increase timeout in watch-bitfields.exp for software watchpoint
I see the following two timeout fails on pandaboard (arm-linux target),

 FAIL: gdb.base/watch-bitfields.exp: -location watch against bitfields: continue until exit (timeout)
 FAIL: gdb.base/watch-bitfields.exp: regular watch against bitfields: continue until exit (timeout)

In this test, more than one watchpoint is used, so the following
watchpoint requests fall back to software watchpoint, so that GDB
will single step all the way and it is very slow.

This patch is to copy the fix from

  [PATCH] GDB/testsuite: Correct gdb.base/watchpoint-solib.exp timeout tweak
  https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2014-07/msg00716.html

I find the left-over of this patch review is to factor out code into
a procedure, so I do that in this patch.

Re-run tests watch-bitfields.exp, watchpoint-solib.exp, sigall-reverse.exp,
and until-precsave.exp on pandaboard, no regression.

Luis Machado 470e2f4e30 I caught a few mingw32-specific failures for some of the gdb.reverse
tests.

FAIL: gdb.reverse/consecutive-precsave.exp: reload precord save file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/finish-precsave.exp: reload precord save file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/until-precsave.exp: reload core file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/watch-precsave.exp: reload core file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/step-precsave.exp: reload core file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/break-precsave.exp: reload precord save file
FAIL: gdb.reverse/sigall-precsave.exp: reload precord save file

They happen for two reasons.

- mingw32 does not define SIGTRAP, so upon recording a core file, the
signal information will be missing, which in turn causes GDB to not
display the stopping signal when it loads the same core file. An
earlier message warns about this:

"warning: Signal SIGTRAP does not exist on this system."

- The testcase is crafted in a way that expects a pattern of the
stopping signal message instead of a successful core file read message.

The following patch fixes this by changing the old pattern to a more
reasonable one, while still ignoring the fact that mingw32-based GDB
does not record a SIGTRAP in a core file because it does not define
it.

Luis Machado a80db0157c Fix mingw32 failures due to incorrect directory separator in pattern
Some testcases, mostly gdb.reverse ones, assume the presence of a
'/' directory separator before the source file name. This is
incorrect for mingw32 hosts, generating false failures for those
tests.

I attempted to catch most of the occurrences of the pattern
".*/$srcfile" and replaced them with ".*$srcfile". The latter
is used elsewhere in the testsuite. The resulting patch is attached.

I also see other occurrences of the same assumption throughout the
testsuite, but usually they are arguments for function calls and i
seem to recall either the test harness or GDB deals with those
paths properly.
