will hold the signal number when the inferior terminates due to the
uncaught signal.
I've made modifications on infrun.c:handle_inferior_event such that
$_exitcode gets cleared when the inferior signalled, and vice-versa.
This assumption was made because the variables are mutually
exclusive, i.e., when the inferior terminates because of an uncaught
signal it is not possible for it to return. I have also made modifications
such that when a corefile is loaded, $_exitsignal gets set to the uncaught
signal that "killed" the inferior, and $_exitcode is cleared.
The patch also adds a NEWS entry, documentation bits, and a testcase. The
documentation entry explains how to use $_exitsignal and $_exitcode in a
GDB script, by making use of the new $_isvoid convenience function.

Currently, in some scenarios, GDB prints <optimized out> when printing
outer frame registers. An <optimized out> register is a confusing
concept. What this really means is that the register is
call-clobbered, or IOW, not saved by the callee. This patch makes GDB
say that instead.
Before patch:

However, if for some reason the debug info describes a variable as
being in such a register (**), we still want to print <optimized out>
when printing the variable. IOW, <not saved> is reserved for
inspecting registers at the machine level. The patch uses
lval_register+optimized_out to encode the not saved registers, and
makes it so that optimized out variables always end up in
!lval_register values.

Current/recent enough GCC doesn't mark variables/arguments as being in
call-clobbered registers in the ranges corresponding to function
calls, while older GCCs did. Newer GCCs will just not say where the
variable is, so GDB will end up realizing the variable is optimized
out.
frame_unwind_got_optimized creates not_lval optimized out registers,
so by default, in most cases, we'll see <optimized out>.
value_of_register is the function eval.c uses for evaluating
OP_REGISTER (again, $pc, etc.), and related bits. It isn't used for
anything else. This function makes sure to return lval_register
values. The patch makes "info registers" and the MI equivalent use it
too. I think it just makes a lot of sense, as this makes it so that
when printing machine registers ($pc, etc.), we go through a central
function.
We're likely to need a different encoding at some point, if/when we
support partially saved registers. Even then, I think
value_of_register will still be the spot to tag the intention to print
machine register values differently.
value_from_register however may also return optimized out
lval_register values, so at a couple places where we're computing a
variable's location from a dwarf expression, we convert the resulting
value away from lval_register to a regular optimized out value.

The native-gdbserver.exp board, used to test against gdbserver in
"target remote" mode, triggers that case ($use_gdb_stub is true). So
gdb_continue_to_end doesn't work for catch-syscall.exp as here we
catch the exit_group and continue from that, expecting to see a real
program exit. I was about to post a patch that changes
catch-syscall.exp to call a new function that just always does what
gdb_continue_to_end does in the !$use_gdb_stub case. But, since
GDBserver doesn't really need this, in the end I thought it better to
teach the testsuite that there are stubs that know how to report
program exits, by adding a new "exit_is_reliable" board variable that
then gdb_continue_to_end checks.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17, native and gdbserver.

Note that the thread-specific breakpoint 3 stayed around, even though
thread 2 is gone.
There's no way that breakpoint can trigger again (*), so the PR argues
that the breakpoint should just be removed, like local watchpoints.
I'm ambivalent on this -- it could be reasonable to disable the
breakpoint (kind of like breakpoint in shared library code when the
DSO is unloaded), so the user could still use it as visual template
for creating other breakpoints (copy/paste command lists, etc.), or we
could have a way to change to which thread a breakpoint applies. But,
several people pushed this direction, and I don't plan on arguing...
(*) - actually, there is ... thread numbers are reset on "run", so
the user could do "break foo thread 2", "run", and expect the
breakpoint to hit again on the second thread. But given gdb's thread
numbering can't really be stable, that'd only work sufficiently well
for thread 1, so we'd better call it unsupported.
So with the patch, whenever a thread is deleted from GDB's list, GDB
goes through the thread-specific breakpoints and deletes corresponding
breakpoints. Since this is user-visible, GDB prints out:

The issue is that print_stack_frame always sets the current sal to the
frame's sal. print_frame_info (which print_stack_frame calls to do
most of the work) also sets the last displayed sal, but only if
print_what isn't LOCATION. Now the call in question, from within
thread.c:print_thread_info, does pass in LOCATION as print_what, but
print_stack_frame doesn't have the same check print_frame_info has.
We could consider adding it, but setting these globals depending on
print_what isn't very clean, IMO. What we have is two logically
distinct operations mixed in the same function(s):
#1 - print frame, in the format specified by {print_what,
print_level and print_args}.
#2 - We're displaying a frame to the user, and I want the default
sal to point here, because the program stopped here, or the user
did some context-changing command (up, down, etc.).
So I added a new parameter to print_stack_frame & friends for point
#2, and went through all calls in the tree adjusting as necessary.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

This patch adds a new convenience function called $_isvoid, whose
only purpose is to check whether an expression is void or not.
This became necessary because the new convenience variable
$_exitsignal (not yet approved) has a mutual exclusive behavior
with $_exitcode, i.e., when one is "defined" (i.e., non-void),
the other is cleared (i.e., becomes void). Doug wanted a way to
identify which variable to use, and checking for voidness is the
obvious solution.
It is worth mentioning that my first attempt, after a conversation with
Doug, was to actually implement a new $_isdefined() convenience
function. I would do that (for convenience variables) by calling
lookup_only_internalvar. However, I found a few problems:
- Whenever I called $_isdefined ($variable), $variable became defined
(with a void value), and $_isdefined always returned true.
- Then, I tried to implement $_isdefined ("variable"), and do the "$" +
"variable" inside GDB, thus making it impossible for GDB to create the
convenience variable. However, it was hard to extract the string
without having to mess with values and their idiossincrasies.
Therefore, I decided to abandon this attempt (specially because I
didn't want to spend too much time struggling with it).
Anyway, after talking to Doug again we decided that it would be easier
to implement $_isvoid, and this will probably help in cases like

To do this, this patch introduces a new gdb_remote_download proc, that
works somewhat differently in the one specific case where it matters:
for a copy to "host", if no destination was given, and the host is not
actually remote, then standard_output_file is used. In parallel mode
this guarantees that the resulting file will end up in a parallel-safe
location.

This introduces parallel mode for the test suite.
It doesn't fully work yet in the sense that if you do a fully parallel
run, you will encounter some file-name clashes, but this has to start
somewhere, and it seemed best to add some infrastructure now, so that
you can follow along and test subsequent patches if you care to.
This patch has two parts.
First, it checks for the GDB_PARALLEL variable. If this is set (say,
on the runtest command line), then the test suite assumes "parallel
mode". In this mode, files are put into a subdirectory named after
the test. That is, for DIR/TEST.exp, the outputs are put into
./outputs/DIR/TEST/.
This first part has various follow-on changes coming in subsequent
patches. This is why the code in this patch also makes "temp" and
"cache" directories.
Second, this adds an "inotify" mode. If you have the inotifywait
command (part of inotify-tools), you can set the GDB_INOTIFY variable.
This will tell the test suite to watch for changes outside of the
allowed output directories.
This mode is useful for debugging the test suite, as it issues a
report whenever a possibly parallel-unsafe file open is done.

In the fully parallel mode, each .exp file can be run in parallel (at
least conceptually -- the actual split may not be so severe). This
means that procs that compute a result and cache it are not going to
function very well. The test they run will be invoked over and over.
This patch introduces a generic caching mechanism and changes various
result-caching procs to use it. This is a cleanup to introduce the
basic change; the results aren't written to disk yet.
A caching proc is defined using gdb_caching_proc, which works like
"proc", except that it caches the result of the body.

This adds a new helper proc, standard_temp_file. This proc takes a
file name and returns a possibly-qualified form. This lets us make
parallel runs use a directory other than ".", which helps the inotify

With "dwz -m", "main" appears in both the PU and the importing CU when
running anon-struct.exp. However, the PU does not have a file name.
So, find_main_filename returns the empty string, making
deduce_language_from_filename return language_unknown.
This patch fixes this problem by changing gdb to use the ordinary
symbol-lookup functions to find "main"'s symbol. Then, it examines the
symbol's language.
I think this is cleaner than the current approach. For one thing it
avoids trying to guess the language based on the source file name,
instead deferring to the presumably more reliable debuginfo.
Another possible fix would have been to change how the file name is
found via the "qf" methods. However, I think the approach given is
preferable for the reason outlined above.
This required a minor test suite change, as now a symtab is expanded
during the search for "main".
Built and regtested (both ways) on x86-64 Fedora 18.

When GDB is run with IO redirected to a pipe, the 'interrupt' command
causes it to kill its own process group instead of the inferior's.
The problem manifests itself in async mode, native debugging:

In this case, GDB tells that its stdin isn't a tty and doesn't save
the inferior's process group in
inflow.c:terminal_init_inferior_with_pgrp. The 'interrupt' command
tries to 'kill' the inferior's process group in
`inf-ptrace.c:inf_ptrace_stop`, but since that wasn't saved in the
first place, GDB kills process group 0, meaning, its own process
group.
When GDB is used from a frontend, that means killing its own process
group including the frontend and possibly the X session. This was
originally seen with SublimeGDB:

The patch makes GDB save the inferior pgid regardless of having a
terminal, as pgid is used not only to reset foreground process group,
but also to interrupt the inferior process. It also adds a regression
test. Luckily, we can emulate not having a terminal with "set
interactive-mode off", avoiding the need of special magic to spawn gdb
with a pipe.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

In extended-remote, when GDB connects the target, but target is not
running, the TSVs are not uploaded. When GDB attaches to a process,
the TSVs are not uploaded either. However, GDBserver has some
builtin or predefined TSV to upload, such as $trace_timestamp. This
bug causes $trace_timestamp is never uploaded.

We've currently got 3 files doing open coded implementations of cpuid.
Each has its own set of workarounds and varying levels of how well
they're written and are generally hardcoded to specific cpuid functions.
If you try to build the latest gdb as a PIE on an i386 system, the build
will fail because one of them lacks PIC workarounds (wrt ebx).
Specifically, we have:
common/linux-btrace.c:
two copies of cpuid asm w/specific args, one has no workarounds
while the other implicitly does to avoid memcpy
go32-nat.c:
two copies of cpuid asm w/specific args, one has workarounds to
avoid memcpy
gdb/testsuite/gdb.arch/i386-cpuid.h:
one general cpuid asm w/many workarounds copied from older gcc
Fortunately, that last header there is pretty damn good -- it handles
lots of edge cases, the code is nice & tight (uses gcc asm operands
rather than manual movs), and is already almost a general library type
header. It's also the basis of what is now the public cpuid.h that is
shipped with gcc-4.3+.
So what I've done is pull that test header out and into gdb/common/
(not sure if there's a better place), synced to the version found in
gcc-4.8.0, put a wrapper API around it, and then cut over all the
existing call points to this new header.
Since the func already has support for "is cpuid supported on this proc",
it makes it trivial to push the i386/x86_64 ifdefs down into this wrapper
API too. Now it can be safely used for all targets and gcc will elide
the unused code for us.
I've verified the gdb.arch testsuite still passes, and this code compiles
for an armv7a host as well as x86_64. The go32-nat code has been left
ifdef-ed out until someone can test & verify the new stuff works (and if
it doesn't, figure out how to make the new code work).

This fixes PR cli/15603.
The bug here is that when a software watchpoint is being used, gdb
will stop responding to C-c. This is a regression caused by the
"catch signal" patch.
The problem is that software watchpoints always end up on the bpstat
list. However, this makes bpstat_explains_signal return
BPSTAT_SIGNAL_HIDE, causing infrun to think that the signal is not a
"random signal".
The fix is to change bpstat_explains_signal to handle this better. I
chose to do it in a "clean API" way, by passing the signal value to
bpstat_explains_signal and then adding an explains_signal method for
watchpoints, which handles the specifics.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18.
New test case included.

PR symtab/15391 is a failure with the DW_OP_GNU_implicit_pointer
feature.
I tracked it down to a logic error in read_pieced_value. The code
truncates this_size_bits according to the type size and offset too
early -- it should do it after taking bits_to_skip into account.
This patch fixes the bug.
While testing this, I also tripped across a latent bug because
indirect_pieced_value does not sign-extend where needed. This patch
fixes this bug as well.
Finally, Pedro pointed out that a previous version implemented sign
extension incorrectly. This version introduces a new gdb_sign_extend
function for this. A couple of notes on this function:
* It has the gdb_ prefix to avoid clashes with various libraries that
felt free to avoid proper namespacing. There is a "sign_extend"
function in a Tile GX header, in an SOM-related BFD header (and in
sh64-tdep.c and as a macro in arm-wince-tdep.c, but those are
ours...)
* I looked at all the sign extensions in gdb and didn't see ones that
I felt comfortable converting to use this function; in large part
because I don't have a good way to test the conversion.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18. New test cases included;
this required a minor addition to the DWARF assembler. Note that the
DWARF CU made by implptrpiece.exp uses a funny pointer size in order
to show the sign-extension bug on all platforms.

python-selftest.exp fails with an error when using the
native-gdbserver.exp board.
The bug is that the selftest code doesn't work in this situation. It
never has.
This patch fixes the problem by pushing the needed check into
do_self_tests. This helps prevent the problem in the future.

This makes sure that the types of the arguments are taken into account
when performing an inferior function call to a non-C (or C-like)
function. In particular, this makes sure that the arguments are
appropriatly converted to the correct type.
For instance, on x86_64-linux, with the following Ada code:

The following sequence shows that Float arguments are incorrectly
passed (Ada's Float type is the equivalent of type "float" in C):

Putting a breakpoint inside set_float to inspect the value of
register xmm0 gives the first hint of the problem:

It shows that the argument was passed as a double.
The code responsible for doing appropriate type conversions
for the arguments (value_arg_coerce) found that our function
was not prototyped, and thus could not use typing information
for the arguments. Instead, it defaulted to the value of "set
coerce-float-to-double", which by default is true, to determine
the argument type.
This patch fixes the problem by setting the PROTOTYPE flag
for all functions of any language except C and Objective C.

In the function remote_trace_set_readonly_regions in gdb/remote.c, the
local variable 'offset' does not account for "QTro" at the start of

Anyway, the fix is simple and Andrew himself provided it for us. It
took a while for me to figure out how to trigger the bug (in order to
write a testcase for it), but I finally made it.
The attached patch fixes the problem (by casting to `unsigned long'
instead of just `long'), and also includes a testcase to reproduce the
issue.

With current GDB on x86-64 GNU/Linux hosts, after the moment the fldt
command has been executed the register st(0) looks like this,
according to the “info regs” output (TOP=7):

which is clearly wrong (just count its length). The problem is due to
the printf statement (see patch) printing a promoted integer value of
a char argument "raw[i]", and, since char is signed on x86-64
GNU/Linux, the erroneous “ffffff” are printed for the first three
bytes which turn out to be "negative". The fix is to use gdb_byte
instead which is unsigned (and is the type of value_contents(), the
type to be used for raw target bytes anyway). After the fix the value
will be printed correctly:

Currently, several commands take "0" or "-1" to mean "unlimited".
"show" knows when to print "unlimited":

However, the user can't herself specify "unlimited" directly:

This patch addresses that, by adjusting the set handler for all
integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited commands to accept literal
"unlimited". It also installs a completer. Presently, we complete on
symbols by default, and at
<http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-03/msg00864.html> I've
shown a WIP prototype that tried to keep that half working in these
commands. In the end, it turned out to be more complicated than
justifiable, IMO. It's super rare to want to pass the value of a
variable/symbol in the program to a GDB set/show knob. That'll still
work, it's just that we won't assist with completion anymore. This
patch just sticks with the simple, and completes on "unlimited", and
nothing else. This simplification means that
"set he<tab><tab>"
is all it takes to get to:
"set height unlimited"
The patch then goes through all integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited
commands in the tree, and updates both the online help and the manual
to mention that "unlimited" is accepted in addition to 0/-1. In the
cases where the command had no online help text at all, this adds it.
I've tried to make the texts read in a way that "unlimited" is
suggested before "0" or "-1" is.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

If !PARSE_CONDITION_AND_THREAD, then ARG is just the location, nothing
else. The fact that the describing comment of create_breakpoint
doesn't mention this just looks like an oversight of when extra_string
was added. "parse_condition_and_thread" has been a misnomer ever
since extra_string was added -- better rename it avoid more confusion.
This makes it "parse_arg", as that'll remain stable even if/when more
explicit parameters are added.

was applied, the "set listsize" command was a var_integer command, and
"unlimited" was set with 0. Internally, var_integer maps 0 to INT_MAX
case var_integer:

The change in that patch to zuinteger_unlimited command, meant that -1
is left as -1 in the command's control variable (lines_to_list), and
the code in source.c isn't expecting that -- it only expects positive
numbers.
I previously suggested fixing the code and keeping the new behavior,
but I found that "set listsize 0" is currently used in the wild, and
we do have a bunch of other commands where "0" means unlimited, so I'm
thinking that changing this command alone in isolation is not a good
idea.
So I now strongly prefer reverting back the behavior in 7.6 to the
same behavior the command has had since 2006 (0==unlimited, -1=error).
Before that, set listsize -1 would be accepted as unlimited as well.
After 7.6 is out, in mainline, we can get back to reconsidering
changing this command's behavior, if there's a real need for being
able to suppress output. For now, let's play it safe.
The "list line 1 with unlimited listsize" test in list.exp was
originally written years and years ago expecting 0 to mean "no
output", but GDB never actually worked that way, even when the tests
were written, so the tests had been xfailed then. This patch now
adjusts the test to the new behavior, so that the test actually
passes, and the xfail is removed.

I knew that the btrace tests on my machine weren't supposed to work,
but still, that error made me wonder if the test had something broken,
and waste a few minutes looking up where that is coming from.
The issue is that the btrace detection deletes the source file right
after compiling it, and before GDB has a chance to open it. It's
really harmless, but I'd rather spare others from going through the
same exercise.
We now get the regular:

There are a series of issues with this code.
It does:
unsigned int val = parse_and_eval_long (arg);
^^^^^^^^^^^^
(unsigned, usually 32-bit) while parse_and_eval_long returns a LONGEST
(usually 64-bit), so we lose precision without noticing:
(gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000
(gdb) show remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000
The maximum number of target hardware watchpoints is 0.
While at it, print the invalid number with plongest, so the user sees
what GDB thought the number was:
(gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000
integer 4294967296 out of range
So with "set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit -1", val ends converted
to 0xffffffff, which then fails the
else if (val >= INT_MAX)
error (_("integer %u out of range"), val);
test.
Looking at that INT_MAX check, we forbid INT_MAX itself, but we
shouldn't, as that does fit in 'int' -- we want to forbid values
_greater_ than INT_MAX (and less than INT_MIN, while at it):
(gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 2147483647
integer 2147483647 out of range
The same problem is in the new var_zuinteger_unlimited code, which
also uses "int" for variable.
Also, when printing a 'signed int', we should use %d, not %u.
This adds a couple regression tests. Not completely thorough in checking
all kinds of invalid input; I'm saving more exaustive testing around
zXXinteger commands for something like new test-assisting commands
like "maint test cmd-zinteger -1", where testing would focus on the
command types, and thus be independent of particular user commands of
particular GDB features.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

This bug was reported internally at our Bugzilla, along with a proposed
fix. After talking to Keith about it, he investigated and came up with
another patch needed to really fix the issue on CVS HEAD.
The first part of the fix is the patch to cp-namespace.c. It handles
the case when we are accessing a static variable inside a function
(inside a class) by the full linespec (is it right, Keith?). E.g.:
class foo
{
public:
int bar()
{
static int var = 0;
}
};
And then, printing the value of `var':
(gdb) print 'foo::bar()::var'
GDB would fall in an internal_error:
gdb/cp-namespace.c:816: internal-error: cp_lookup_nested_symbol called on a non-aggregate type.
This is because `cp_lookup_nested_symbol' is not handling the case when
TYPE_CODE is either _FUNC or _METHOD. This patch fixes it by returning
NULL in this case.
The second part of the fix is the patch to elfread.c. It is needed
because the BSF_GNU_UNIQUE flag was added to some symbols in
<http://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2009-06/msg00016.html>. Because of
that, (still) the command:
(gdb) print 'foo::bar()::var'
where `var' is a static variable returns:
"No symbol "foo::bar()::var" in current context."
So with the second patch applied the command finally DTRT:
(gdb) print 'foo::bar()::var'
$1 = 0
This may not be the ideal solution, according to Keith it would be good
to implement productions on c-exp.y in order to recognize
CLASS::FUNCTION::VARIABLE, but it is a solution which works with what we
have today.
I regtested it in Fedora 17 x86_64 with -m64 and -m32, including
gdbserver, without regressions.
