Gary Benson c765fdb902 Remove spurious exceptions.h inclusions
defs.h includes utils.h, and utils.h includes exceptions.h.  All GDB
.c files include defs.h as their first line, so no file other than
utils.h needs to include exceptions.h.  This commit removes all such
inclusions.

Patrick Palka bb9d5f81c3 Fix PR12526: -location watchpoints for bitfield arguments
PR 12526 reports that -location watchpoints against bitfield arguments
trigger false positives when bits around the bitfield, but not the
bitfield itself, are modified.

This happens because -location watchpoints naturally operate at the
byte level, not at the bit level.  When the address of a bitfield
lvalue is taken, information about the bitfield (i.e. its offset and
size) is lost in the process.

This information must first be retained throughout the lifetime of the
-location watchpoint.  This patch achieves this by adding two new
fields to the watchpoint struct: val_bitpos and val_bitsize.  These
fields are set when a watchpoint is first defined in watch_command_1.
They are both equal to zero if the watchpoint is not a -location
watchpoint or if the argument is not a bitfield.

Then these bitfield parameters are used inside update_watchpoint and
watchpoint_check to extract the actual value of the bitfield from the
watchpoint address, with the help of a local helper function
extract_bitfield_from_watchpoint_value.

Finally when creating a HW breakpoint pointing to a bitfield, we
optimize the address and length of the breakpoint.  By skipping over
the bytes that don't cover the bitfield, this step reduces the
frequency at which a read watchpoint for the bitfield is triggered.
It also reduces the number of times a false-positive call to
check_watchpoint is triggered for a write watchpoint.

The idea was that we'd just fallback to calling value_field_bitfield,
which handles unavailable values (in unpack_value_bits_as_long_1) so
should be able to handle optimized out values too.  Alas, it doesn't.
This is currently a bit too messy.  Instead of teaching
unpack_value_bits_as_long_1 about optimized out bits, let's bite the
bullet and teach the value code to handle partially optimized out
bitfield, by having it unpack a bitfield and then propagate the range
metadata.  Turns out the resulting code looks simpler and clearer.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, -m64/-m32.

Joel Brobecker d36430db79 Fix handling of typedefs to types having a data_location attribute.
Consider an array described in the debugging information as being
a typedef of an array type for which there is a DW_AT_data_location
attribute. Trying to print the value of that array currently yields
incorrect element values. For instance:

    (gdb) print foo.three_tdef
    $1 = (6293760, 0, 6293772)

The problem occurs because we check for the data_location attribute
only on the typedef type, whereas we should be checking for the
typedef's target type.  As a result, GDB erroneously thinks that
there is no data_location, and therefore starts reading the array's
content from the address of the descriptor instead of the data_location
address.

        * value.c (value_from_contents_and_address): Strip resolved_type's
        typedef layers before checking its TYPE_DATA_LOCATION.

Pedro Alves 9a0dc9e369 Handle partially optimized out values similarly to unavailable values
This fixes PR symtab/14604, PR symtab/14605, and Jan's test at
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2014-07/msg00158.html, in a tree
with bddbbed reverted:

 	non-lazy.

The PRs are about variables described by the DWARF as being split over
multiple registers using DWARF piece information, but some of those
registers being marked as optimised out (not saved) by a later frame.
GDB currently incorrectly mishandles these partially-optimized-out
values.

Even though we can usually tell from the debug info whether a local or
global is optimized out, handling the case of a local living in a
register that was not saved in a frame requires fetching the variable.
GDB also needs to fetch a value to tell whether parts of it are
"<unavailable>".  Given this, it's not worth it to try to avoid
fetching lazy optimized-out values based on debug info alone.

So this patch makes GDB track which chunks of a value's contents are
optimized out like it tracks <unavailable> contents.  That is, it
makes value->optimized_out be a bit range vector instead of a boolean,
and removes the struct lval_funcs check_validity and check_any_valid
hooks.

Unlike Andrew's series which this is based on (at
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-08/msg00300.html, note some
pieces have gone in since), this doesn't merge optimized out and
unavailable contents validity/availability behind a single interface,
nor does it merge the bit range vectors themselves (at least yet).
While it may be desirable to have a single entry point that returns
existence of contents irrespective of what may make them
invalid/unavailable, several places want to treat optimized out /
unavailable / etc. differently, so each spot that potentially could
use it will need to be careful considered on case-by-case basis, and
best done as a separate change.

This fixes Jan's test, because value_available_contents_eq wasn't
considering optimized out value contents.  It does now, and because of
that it's been renamed to value_contents_eq.

A new intro comment is added to value.h describing "<optimized out>",
"<not saved>" and "<unavailable>" values.

Joel Brobecker cb417230fb value_from_pointer: remove call to resolve_dynamic_type
The given type is expected to always be a TYPE_CODE_PTR, for which
resolve_dynamic_type does nothing.  So this patch removes this call.

Tom Tromey 012370f681 handle VLA in a struct or union
It is valid in GNU C to have a VLA in a struct or union type, but gdb
did not handle this.

This patch adds support for these cases in the obvious way.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 20.

Sanimir Agovic 80180f796d type: add c99 variable length array support
The dwarf standard allow certain attributes to be expressed as dwarf
expressions rather than constants. For instance upper-/lowerbound attributes.
In case of a c99 variable length array the upperbound is a dynamic attribute.

With this change c99 vla behave the same as with static arrays.

Tom Tromey 77e371c079 start change to progspace independence
This patch starts changing minimal symbols to be independent of the
program space.

Specifically, it adds a new objfile parameter to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS
and changes all the code to use it.  This is needed so we can change
gdb to apply the section offset when a minsym's address is computed,
as opposed to baking the offsets into the symbol itself.

A few spots still need the unrelocated address.  For these, we
introduce MSYMBOL_VALUE_RAW_ADDRESS.

As a convenience, we also add the new macro BMSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS,
which computes the address of a bound minimal symbol.  This just does
the obvious thing with the fields.

Note that this change does not actually enable program space
independence.  That requires more changes to gdb.  However, to ensure
that these changes compile properly, this patch does add the needed
section lookup code to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS -- it just ensures it has
no effect at runtime by multiplying the offset by 0.

Tom Tromey 3b7344d5ab use bound_minsym as result for lookup_minimal_symbol et al
This patch changes a few minimal symbol lookup functions to return a
bound_minimal_symbol rather than a pointer to the minsym.  This change
helps prepare gdb for computing a minimal symbol's address at the
point of use.

Note that this changes even those functions that ostensibly search a
single objfile.  That was necessary because, in fact, those functions
can search an objfile and its separate debug objfiles; and it is
important for the caller to know in which objfile the minimal symbol
was actually found.

The bulk of this patch is mechanical.

Tom Tromey efd66ac669 change minsym representation
In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address
calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use.  To make it
simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the
representation of minimal symbols and introduces new
minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors.  This is
necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert
all the symbol types at once.

The core of this change is just renaming a field in minimal_symbol;
the rest is just a fairly mechanical rewording.

Tom Tromey 98b1cfdcc8 rearrange struct value to save memory
This patch rearranges struct value a tiny bit, moving the "regnum"
field into a hole.  This saves 8 bytes per value on a 64-bit machine,
and 4 bytes per value on a 32 bit machine.  I think it does not
negatively affect readability or performance.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18.

The vector of unavailable parts of a value is currently byte based.  Given
that we can model a value down to the bit level, we can potentially loose
information with the current implementation.  After this patch we model the
unavailable information in bits.

If a value is entirely optimized out, then there's nothing for
value_fetch_lazy to fetch.  Sequences like:

Tom Tromey 6eeee81c8e Detect infinite loop in value_fetch_lazy's lval_register handling.
If value_fetch_lazy loops infinitely while unwrapping lval_register
values, it means we either somehow ended up with two frames with the
same ID in the frame chain, or some code is trying to unwind behind
get_prev_frame's back (e.g., a frame unwind sniffer trying to unwind).
In any case, it should always be an internal error to end up in this
situation.

This patch adds a check and throws an internal error if the same frame
is returned.

This removes gdb_string.h.  This patch is purely mechanical.  I

Pedro Alves 686d4defdf Print nonexisting/optimized out static fields gracefully.
With:

 struct static_struct { static int aaa; };
 struct static_struct sss;
 int main () { return 0; }

We get:

 (gdb) p sss
 $1 = {static aaa = <optimized out>}
 (gdb) p sss.aaa
 field aaa is nonexistent or has been optimized out

Note that the "field aaa ..." message is an error being thrown.

GDB is graceful everywhere else when printing optimized out values.
IOW it usually prints an <optimized out> value and puts that in the
value history.  I see no reason for here to be different, more so that
when the print the whole "containing" object (well, it's a static
field, so it's not really a container), we already print <optimized
out>.

After the patch:

 (gdb) p sss
 $1 = {static aaa = <optimized out>}
 (gdb) p sss.aaa
 $2 = <optimized out>

The value_entirely_optimized_out checks are there to preserve
behavior.  Without those, if the static field is a struct/union, GDB
would go and print its fields one by one (and print <optimized out>
for each).

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

Pedro Alves 901461f8eb Print registers not saved in the frame as "<not saved>" instead of "<optimized out>".
Currently, in some scenarios, GDB prints <optimized out> when printing
outer frame registers.  An <optimized out> register is a confusing
concept.  What this really means is that the register is
call-clobbered, or IOW, not saved by the callee.  This patch makes GDB
say that instead.

Before patch:

 (gdb) p/x $rax $1 = <optimized out>
 (gdb) info registers rax
 rax            <optimized out>

After patch:

 (gdb) p/x $rax
 $1 = <not saved>
 (gdb) info registers rax
 rax            <not saved>

However, if for some reason the debug info describes a variable as
being in such a register (**), we still want to print <optimized out>
when printing the variable.  IOW, <not saved> is reserved for
inspecting registers at the machine level.  The patch uses
lval_register+optimized_out to encode the not saved registers, and
makes it so that optimized out variables always end up in
!lval_register values.

Current/recent enough GCC doesn't mark variables/arguments as being in
call-clobbered registers in the ranges corresponding to function
calls, while older GCCs did.  Newer GCCs will just not say where the
variable is, so GDB will end up realizing the variable is optimized
out.

frame_unwind_got_optimized creates not_lval optimized out registers,
so by default, in most cases, we'll see <optimized out>.

value_of_register is the function eval.c uses for evaluating
OP_REGISTER (again, $pc, etc.), and related bits.  It isn't used for
anything else.  This function makes sure to return lval_register
values.  The patch makes "info registers" and the MI equivalent use it
too.  I think it just makes a lot of sense, as this makes it so that
when printing machine registers ($pc, etc.), we go through a central
function.

We're likely to need a different encoding at some point, if/when we
support partially saved registers.  Even then, I think
value_of_register will still be the spot to tag the intention to print
machine register values differently.

value_from_register however may also return optimized out
lval_register values, so at a couple places where we're computing a
variable's location from a dwarf expression, we convert the resulting
value away from lval_register to a regular optimized out value.

This patch adds a new convenience function called $_isvoid, whose
only purpose is to check whether an expression is void or not.
This became necessary because the new convenience variable
$_exitsignal (not yet approved) has a mutual exclusive behavior
with $_exitcode, i.e., when one is "defined" (i.e., non-void),
the other is cleared (i.e., becomes void).  Doug wanted a way to
identify which variable to use, and checking for voidness is the
obvious solution.

It is worth mentioning that my first attempt, after a conversation with
Doug, was to actually implement a new $_isdefined() convenience
function.  I would do that (for convenience variables) by calling
lookup_only_internalvar.  However, I found a few problems:

- Whenever I called $_isdefined ($variable), $variable became defined
  (with a void value), and $_isdefined always returned true.

- Then, I tried to implement $_isdefined ("variable"), and do the "$" +
  "variable" inside GDB, thus making it impossible for GDB to create the
  convenience variable.  However, it was hard to extract the string
  without having to mess with values and their idiossincrasies.
  Therefore, I decided to abandon this attempt (specially because I
  didn't want to spend too much time struggling with it).

Anyway, after talking to Doug again we decided that it would be easier
to implement $_isvoid, and this will probably help in cases like
<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3744554/testing-if-a-gdb-convenience-variable-is-defined>.

I wrote a NEWS entry for it, and some new lines on the documentation.

Yao Qi 6211c335ec Add options to skip unavailable locals
This is the patch to add new option '--skip-unavailable' to MI
commands '-stack-list-{locals, arguments, variables}'.  This patch
extends list_args_or_locals to add a new parameter 'skip_unavailable',
and don't list locals or arguments if values are unavailable and
'skip_unavailable' is true.

This is inspecting a trace frame (tfind mode), where only a few
locals have been collected.

Tom Tromey 7c7b66552d remove msymbol_objfile
This is another patch in my ongoing series to "split" objfile to share
more read-only data across inferiors.  See

When symbols are finally shared, there will be no back-link from the
symbol to its containing objfile, because there may be more than one
such objfile.  So, all such back-links must be removed.

One hidden back-link is the msymbol_objfile function.  Since
(eventually) a symbol may appear in more than one objfile, trying to
look up the objfile given just a symbol cannot work.

This patch removes msymbol_objfile in favor of using a bound minimal
symbol.  It introduces a new function to make this conversion simpler
in some spots.

The bonus of this patch is that using msymbol_objfile is slower than
simply looking up the owning objfile in the first place.

Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18.

Notice that before value_optimized_out was made to auto-fetch lazy
values, VAL would end up still lazy if it was lazy on entry.  It's not
really a problem here if VAL is lazy, and VAL->optimized_out is 0,
because RESULT is also left lazy.  IOW, this just wants to copy the
VAL->optimized_out flag to RESULT->optimized_out, nothing else.

As a side-effect of the change in value_optimized_out, the following
testcase now regresses. Consider:

       type Small is range -64 .. 63;
       for Small'Size use 7;
       type Arr is array (1..10) of Small;
       pragma Pack (Arr);

       type Arr_Ptr is access Arr;
       An_Arr_Ptr : Arr_Ptr := new Arr'(10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 62, 63,
                                        -23, 42);

    Trying to print one element of An_Arr_Ptr yields:

        (gdb) p an_arr_ptr(3)
        Cannot access memory at address 0x0

The patch adds the value_optimized_out_const function for that,
allowing us to avoid trying to fetch a value at a dummy address.

(I found this out by grepping for set_value_optimized_out and trying
to convert the uses I found to instead allocate the value with
allocate_optimized_out_value.)

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

Pedro Alves 58722cac5a value_bits_valid: Fix latent bug.
Doing something else, I factored out the bits of the value_bits_valid
function that actually handle the check_validity hook, and
surprisingly found out that the result was misbehaving.  Turns out
value_bits_valid has a latent bug.  If the value is not lval_computed,
or doesn't have a check_validity hook, then we should assume the value
is entirely valid, not invalid.  This is currently masked by the
value->optimized_out check -- I ran the testsuite with a gdb_assert(0)
inserted in place of that return being touched by the patch, and it
never triggers.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.
