Pedro Alves dc9366eb05 gdb: Fix a few unstable test names
Avoid putting unstable path names in test messages, in order to avoid
spurious testrun result diffs like:

 [....]
 -PASS: gdb.base/break-fun-addr.exp: /home/pedro/gdb/test-build1/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/break-fun-addr/break-fun-addr1: break *main
 +PASS: gdb.base/break-fun-addr.exp: /home/pedro/gdb/test-build2/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/break-fun-addr/break-fun-addr1: break *main
 [....]

gdb/ChangeLog:
2017-03-08  Pedro Alves  <palves@redhat.com>

	* gdb.base/break-fun-addr.exp: Use $testfile1/$testfile2 for test
	prefix instead of $binfile1/$binfile2.
	* gdb.btrace/gcore.exp: Use "core" instead of unstable path name
	in test message.
	* gdb.python/py-completion.exp: Use "load python file" as test
	messages instead of unstable path names.

Markus Metzger 68777c2989 btrace, testsuite: fix extended-remote fail
Parts of gdb.btrace/enable.exp are only valid for native debug. The check for
skip_gdbserver_tests is done while GDB is running, though, which causes it to
fail with --target_board=native-extended-gdbserver. Exit GDB before that check.

testsuite/
	* gdb.btrace/enable.exp: Call gdb_exit before skip_gdbserver_tests.

Markus Metzger 0a1c7e2881 btrace, testsuite: fix extended-remote non-stop test
With --target_board=native-extended-gdbserver non-stop tests are failing with

    UNTESTED: gdb.btrace/non-stop.exp: failed to run to main

Fix that by adding '-ex "set non-stop on"' to GDBFLAGS before restarting.

testsuite/
	* gdb.btrace/non-stop.exp: Add '-ex "set non-stop on"' to GDBFLAGS.

Markus Metzger b5ac99b082 btrace: add unsupported/untested messages when skipping tests
We may silently skip gdb.btrace tests if

  - the target does not support record-btrace
  - the target does not support TSX
  - the target does not support gdbserver
  - we fail to compile the test
  - we fail to run to main

Add unsupported/untested messages for each of those.

Markus Metzger cd4007e434 btrace: allow recording to be started (and stopped) for running threads
When recording is started for a running thread, GDB was able to start tracing
but then failed to read registers to insert the initial entry for the current
PC. We don't really need that initial entry if we don't know where exactly we
started recording. Skip that step to allow recording to be started while
threads are running.

If we do run into errors, we need to undo the tracing enable to not leak this
thread. The operation did not complete so our caller won't clean up this
thread.

For the BTRACE_FORMAT_PT btrace format, we don't need that initial entry since
it will be recorded in the trace. We can omit the call to btrace_add_pc.

gdb/
	* btrace.c (btrace_enable): Do not call btrace_add_pc for
	BTRACE_FORMAT_PT or if can_access_registers_ptid returns false.
	(btrace_fetch): Assert can_access_registers_ptid.
	* record-btrace.c (require_btrace_thread, record_btrace_info): Call
	validate_registers_access.

testsuite/
	* gdb.btrace/enable-running.c: New.
	* gdb.btrace/enable-running.exp: New.

Luis Machado 5b362f04b2 Fix more cases of improper test names
I noticed more occurrences of improper test names. The rather mechanical,
tedious and large patch below addresses, hopefully, most of the leftover cases.

As usual, another pair of eyes is welcome to check if missed something or did
an invalid substitution.

This patch also fixes the prepare_for_testing calls to pass proper test names.

Luis Machado 84c93cd5f1 Fixup testcases outputting own name as a test name and standardize failed compilation messages
Changes in v3:

- Adjusted some testcases where the message "failed to compile" was not unique.

Changes in v2:

- Addressed comments from reviewers.
- Fixed spurious whitespaces.
- Changed compilation failure messages that included source/binary paths to
  ones that are short and deterministic.

---

Another bit of cleanup to the testsuite. We have a number of tests that are
not honoring the rule of not outputting their own name as a test name.

I fixed up all the offenders i could find with the following regular
expression:

"(xfail|kfail|kpass|fail|pass|unsupported|untested) ([A-Za-z0-9]+|\\\$(.)*testfile(.)*)\.exp$"

Luis Machado bc6c7af4a2 Fix test names starting with uppercase output by basic functions
The following patch is based on the previous patch i sent and handles cases of
test names that start with an uppercase letter. Test names should start with
lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA
etc.

This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail,
kfail, kpass, fail, pass, unsupported, untested and also names set with the
pattern "set test" and "set testname".

Markus Metzger e0461dbb65 btrace, testsuite: fix assembly source file selection
Some btrace tests use assembly source files. They use the target triplet to
distinguish between x86_64 and ia32 ISA. This does not work for -m32 tests
without setting the target triplet to i686-?-?.

Instead use is_amd64_regs_target to distinguish between x86_64 and ia32 ISA.

See also https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2016-07/msg00256.html.

Tim Wiederhake c0272db585 btrace: Resume recording after disconnect.
This patch allows gdbserver to continue recording after disconnect. On
reconnect, the recorded data is accessible to gdb as if no disconnect happened.

A possible application for this feature is remotely examine bugs that occur
at irregular intervals, where maintaining a gdb connection is inconvenient.

This also fixes the issue mentioned here:

Like this:

set target_triplet "i686-unknown-linux"
set_board_info cflags "-m32"
set_board_info cppflags "-m32"

There's no reason you should _not_ set it.

But, multilib-style testing with --target_board=unix\{-m64,-m32\} etc.
should work _too_, IMO.

Markus Metzger 33b4777ca1 btrace, frame: fix crash in get_frame_type
In skip_artificial_frames we repeatedly call get_prev_frame_always until we get
a non-inline and non-tailcall frame assuming that there must be such a frame
eventually.

For record targets, however, we may have a frame chain that consists only of
artificial frames. This leads to a crash in get_frame_type when dereferencing a
NULL frame pointer.

Change skip_artificial_frames and skip_tailcall_frames to return NULL in such a
case and modify each caller to cope with a NULL return.

In frame_unwind_caller_pc and frame_unwind_caller_arch, we simply assert that
the returned value is not NULL. Their caller was supposed to check
frame_unwind_caller_id before calling those functions.

In other cases, we thrown an error.

In infcmd further move the skip_tailcall_frames call to the forward-stepping
case since we don't need a frame for reverse execution and we don't want to fail
because of that. Reverse-finish does make sense for a tailcall frame.

Simon Marchi 2151ccc56c Always organize test artifacts in a directory hierarchy
When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a
different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it
was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An
artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test.

Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all
over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If
everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory
(which we already do).

At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles
useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for
cleaning.

What do you think?

Markus Metzger abcef95aa5 btrace, test: avoid gdb.btrace/vdso.exp fail
The vdso.exp test checks that we can access the VDSO memory when replaying.

Depending on the line information generated by the compiler, runto_main may run
to the line marked with bp.1 or stop before that line. The test incorrectly
assumes that it will always run to the marked line and fails if it doesn't.

The test does not really care about what is traced. It does care that GDB is
replaying when capturing the second disassemble output.

Reflect that in the test by ignoring the output of the stepping and record goto
begin commands and by checking that GDB is actually replaying.

A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
further debugging may prove unreliable.
Quit this debugging session? (y or n)

This happens because there's a breakpoint at PC when the "next"
is issued, so that breapoint should be immediately stepped over.
That should have been detected/done by proceed, here:

  if (addr == (CORE_ADDR) -1)
    {
      if (pc == stop_pc
	  && breakpoint_here_p (aspace, pc) == ordinary_breakpoint_here
	  && execution_direction != EXEC_REVERSE)
	/* There is a breakpoint at the address we will resume at,
	   step one instruction before inserting breakpoints so that
	   we do not stop right away (and report a second hit at this
	   breakpoint).

	   Note, we don't do this in reverse, because we won't
	   actually be executing the breakpoint insn anyway.
	   We'll be (un-)executing the previous instruction.  */
	tp->stepping_over_breakpoint = 1;

But since stop_pc was stale, the pc == stop_pc check failed, and left the
breakpont at PC inserted.

Markus Metzger 66849923d2 btrace: fix tests for 32-bit
The x86-record_goto.S assembly source file does not build on 32-bit.
This breaks many tests that use this file.

Split it into x86_64-record_goto.S and i686-record_goto.S. Luckily, we
can use either one with the same test .exp file.

It further turned out that most tests do not really need a fixed binary;
they should work pretty well with a newly-compiled C program. The
one thing that breaks this is the heavy use of "record goto" to navigate
inside the recorded execution.

Combine step.exp, next,exp, and finish.exp into a single test step.exp

Markus Metzger 23a7fe7580 btrace: change branch trace data structure
The branch trace is represented as 3 vectors:
  - a block vector
  - a instruction vector
  - a function vector

Each vector (except for the first) is computed from the one above.

Change this into a graph where a node represents a sequence of instructions
belonging to the same function and where we have three types of edges to connect
the function segments:
  - control flow
  - same function (instance)
  - call stack

This allows us to navigate in the branch trace. We will need this for "record
goto" and reverse execution.

This patch introduces the data structure and computes the control flow edges.
It also introduces iterator structs to simplify iterating over the branch trace
in control-flow order.

It also fixes PR gdb/15240 since now recursive calls are handled correctly.
Fix the test that got the number of expected fib instances and also the
function numbers wrong.

The current instruction had been part of the branch trace. This will look odd
once we start support for reverse execution. Remove it. We still keep it in
the trace itself to allow extending the branch trace more easily in the future.
