Alan Modra 1594e052d4 xgate cleanup
elf32-xgate.c contains many functions that are only stubs and
elf32-xgate.h contains unused declarations. While this might be
reasonable for the initial commit of a port with subsequent work
fleshing out the stubs, xgate has only had two minor target specific
patches since the initial commit over six years ago. The rest of the
changes have been general maintenance work applied to all ELF targets,
and some of this work could have been avoided if the stubs hadn't been
there. So this patch removes all the stubs.

I've kept the functionality of the old elf32_xgate_add_symbol_hook,
implemented in elf32_xgate_backend_symbol_processing.  Presumably,
that's to set the symbol st_target_internal flag for use in
elf32-m68hc1x.c:elf32_m68hc11_relocate_section.

The empty elf32_xgate_relocate_section meant that xgate had no linker.
Or at least, no linker relocation processing. Deleting the
elf_backend_relocate_section define means the target will now use the
generic linker reloc processing. How good that is will depend on the
accuracy of the reloc howtos..

I haven't updated the ld testsuite to xfail tests expected to fail
for generic elf targets.

Alan Hayward ad1cc4e492 Add checks for the NT_ARM_SVE section in a core file.
The NT_ARM_SVE section is documented here:

Alan Modra 8d2c8c3d17 GNU attribute output on errors
.gnu.attributes entries from linker input files are merged to the
output file, the output having the union of compatible input
attributes. Incompatible attributes generally cause a linker error
and no output. However in some cases only a warning is emitted, and
one of the incompatible input attributes is passed on to the output.

PowerPC tends to emit warnings rather than errors, and the output
takes the first input attribute. For example, if we have two input
files with Tag_GNU_Power_ABI_FP, the first with a value signifying
"double-precision hard float, IBM long double", the second with a
value signifying "double-precision hard float, IEEE long double",
we'll get a warning about incompatible long double types and the
output will say "double-precision hard float, IBM long double".
The output attribute of course isn't correct. It would be correct to
specify "IBM and IEEE long double", but we don't have a way to
represent that currently. While it would be possible to extend the
encoding, there isn't much gain in doing so. A shared library
providing support for both long double types should link against
objects using either long double type without warning or error. That
is what you'd get if such a shared library had no Tag_GNU_Power_ABI_FP
attribute.

So this patch provides a way for the backend to omit .gnu.attributes
tags from the output.

Alan Modra 7f923b7fd2 ELF dynsyms
Many ELF targets arrange to emit a number of section symbols in
.dynsym for use by dynamic relocations. This happens before the
dynamic relocations are output, and the need for those symbols
determined. In most cases they are not needed. A proper analysis of
the need for dynamic section symbols is target specific and tedious,
so this patch just excludes them in the obvious case when no
dynamic relocations are present.

The patch also runs the new pr23161 and pr23162 tests on more targets.

Alan Modra 702d167134 powerpc common-page-size
max-page-size only matters for demand paged executables or shared
libraries, and the ideal size is the largest value used by your
operating system. Values larger than necessary just waste file space
and memory. common-page-size also affects file and memory size,
trading a possible small increase in file size for a decrease in
memory size when the operating system is using a common-page-size
page.  With a powerpc max-page-size of 64k and common-page-size of 4k
many executables will use no more memory pages when the system page
size is 4k than an executable linked with -z max-page-size=0x1000,
yet will still run on a system using 64k pages. However, when running
on a system using 64k pages relro protection will not be completely
effective.

Due to the relro problem, powerpc binutils has been using a default
common-page-size of 64k since 2014-12-18 (git commit 04c6a44c7),
leading to complaints about increased file and memory sizes. People
not using relro do have a valid reason to complain..

So this patch introduces an extra back-end value to use as the default
for common-page-size when generating relro executables, and enables
the support for powerpc. Non relro executables will now be generated
with a default common-page-size of 4k.

Alan Modra d00dd7dc5e Remove bfd stub function casts.
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target
structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub
functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their
parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The
latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of
bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in
elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol.

Jens Widell 564e11c9a9 Optimize the performance of the group_setup function.
When processing a section that is a member of a group, the group
that contains it is looked up using a linear search. The resulting
O(n^2) complexity causes significant performance issues when
dealing with object files with very many groups.

By remembering the index of the last found group and restarting
the next search from that index, the search instead becomes O(n)
in common cases.

	* elf.c (setup_group): Optimize search for group by remembering
	last found group and restarting search at that index.
	* elf-bfd.h (struct elf_obj_tdata): Add group_search_offset field.

Alan Modra 60d67dc84b Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular list
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to
point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that
all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias,
distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all
places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL.

With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or
more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition.
Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of
the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the
strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to
return the strong definition.

	* elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias.
	Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment.
	(weakdef): New static inline function.
	* elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias

	is_weakalias and use weakdef. Set is_weakalias and circular
	u.alias.  Update comments.
	(_bfd_elf_gc_mark_rsec): Test is_weakalias rather than
	u.weakdef != NULL and use weakdef function.
	* elf-m10300.c (_bfd_mn10300_elf_adjust_dynamic_symbol): Test

H.J. Lu 5c3261b0e8 ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputs
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.

Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.

ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.

Maciej W. Rozycki 3c9a7b0d6d ELF/BFD: Handle both variants of the 64-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note
Fix commit 70a38d42c5 ("New entry points for writing Linux NT_PRPSINFO
notes."), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00023.html>,
and handle both variants of the 64-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note across
all targets.

The 64-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note matches the 64-bit kernel structure,
defined as follows:

(gdb) ptype struct elf_prpsinfo
type = struct elf_prpsinfo {
    char pr_state;
    char pr_sname;
    char pr_zomb;
    char pr_nice;
    unsigned long pr_flag;
    __kernel_uid_t pr_uid;
    __kernel_gid_t pr_gid;
    pid_t pr_pid;
    pid_t pr_ppid;
    pid_t pr_pgrp;
    pid_t pr_sid;
    char pr_fname[16];
    char pr_psargs[80];
}
(gdb)

where the individual data types of most members are the same across all
64-bit Linux ports, with the exception of `__kernel_uid_t' and
`__kernel_gid_t'. These are defined in <asm-generic/posix_types.h> as
32-bit `unsigned int' by default, however overridden as 16-bit `unsigned
short' in port-specific <asm/posix_types.h> for the SuperH target.

The default is already handled, as from the commit referred. Add the
other variant then and provide a backend flag to switch between the two
cases possible, with the 32-bit one being the default and the 16-bit one
explicitly selected. Set the flag in the SuperH target backend. This
arrangement is analogous to how the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note is
handled.

Maciej W. Rozycki a2f63b2e7a ELF/BFD,GDB: Handle both variants of the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note
Fix commit 70a38d42c5 ("New entry points for writing Linux NT_PRPSINFO
notes."), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00023.html>,
and commit b3ac9c7756 ("Put more info in NT_PRPSINFO Linux notes"),
<https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00024.html>, and handle
both variants of the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note across all targets.

The 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note matches the 32-bit kernel structure,
defined as follows:

(gdb) ptype struct elf_prpsinfo
type = struct elf_prpsinfo {
    char pr_state;
    char pr_sname;
    char pr_zomb;
    char pr_nice;
    unsigned long pr_flag;
    __kernel_uid_t pr_uid;
    __kernel_gid_t pr_gid;
    pid_t pr_pid;
    pid_t pr_ppid;
    pid_t pr_pgrp;
    pid_t pr_sid;
    char pr_fname[16];
    char pr_psargs[80];
}
(gdb)

where the individual data types of most members are the same across all
32-bit Linux ports, with the exception of `__kernel_uid_t' and
`__kernel_gid_t'. These are defined in <asm-generic/posix_types.h> as
32-bit `unsigned int' by default, however overridden as 16-bit `unsigned
short' in port-specific <asm/posix_types.h> for a few targets, mostly
earlier ports of Linux, specifically: ARM, CRIS, FR-V, M32R, m68k,
MN10300/AM33, s390, SuperH, SPARC and i386.

The default is the same as the PowerPC variant already handled, as from
the commits referred. Make the special PowerPC case generic then,
removing the GDB part, and provide a backend flag to switch between the
two cases possible, with the 32-bit one being the default and the 16-bit
one explicitly selected. Set the flag in the target backends affected.

Alan Modra 7dba9362c1 Rewrite __start and __stop symbol handling
This arranges for __start and __stop symbols to be defined before
garbage collection, for all target formats. That should allow the
COFF and PE --gc-sections to keep a singleton orphan input section,
a feature lost by 2017-06-13 commit cbd0eecf26. The fancier ELF
treatment of keeping all input sections associated with a __start or
__stop symbol, from 2015-10-23 commit 1cce69b9dc, is retained.

.startof. and .sizeof. symbols are deliberately not defined before
garbage collection, so these won't affect garbage collection of
sections.

The patch also ensures __start, __stop, .startof. and .sizeof. symbols
are defined before target size_dynamic_sections is called, albeit
with a preliminary value, so that target code doesn't need to cope
with a symbol changing from undefined at size_dynamic_sections to
defined at relocate_section.

Also, a number of problems with the testcases have been fixed.

H.J. Lu cbd0eecf26 Always define referenced __start_SECNAME/__stop_SECNAME
Currently, linker will define __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols
only for orphaned sections.

However, during garbage collection, ELF linker marks all sections with
references to __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols as used even
when section SECNAME isn't an orphaned section and linker won't define
__start_SECNAME nor __stop_SECNAME. And ELF linker stores the first
input section whose name matches __start_SECNAME or __stop_SECNAME in
u.undef.section for garbage collection. If these symbols are provided
in linker script, u.undef.section is set to the section where they will
defined by linker script, which leads to the incorrect output.

This patch changes linker to always define referenced __start_SECNAME and
__stop_SECNAME if the input section name is the same as the output section
name, which is always true for orphaned sections, and SECNAME is a C
identifier. Also __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols are marked
as hidden by ELF linker so that __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols
for section SECNAME in different modules are unique. For garbage
collection, ELF linker stores the first matched input section in the
unused vtable field.

Maciej W. Rozycki 056bafd472 ELF/BFD: Hold the number of internal static relocs in `->reloc_count'
Correct a commit e5713223cb ("MIPS/BFD: For n64 hold the number of
internal relocs in `->reloc_count'") regression and change internal
relocation handling in the generic ELF BFD linker code such that, except
in the presence of R_SPARC_OLO10 relocations, a section's `reloc_count'
holds the number of internal rather than external relocations, making
the handling more consistent between GAS, which sets `->reloc_count'
with a call to `bfd_set_reloc', and LD, which sets `->reloc_count' as it
reads input sections.

The handling of dynamic relocations remains unchanged and they continue
holding the number of external relocations in `->reloc_count'; they are
also not converted to the internal form except in `elf_link_sort_relocs'
(which does not handle the general, i.e. non-n64-MIPS case of composed
relocations correctly as per the ELF gABI, though it does not seem to
matter for the targets we currently support).

The n64 MIPS backend is the only one with `int_rels_per_ext_rel' set to
non-one, and consequently the change is trivial for all the remaining
backends and targets.

Maciej W. Rozycki 23ec1e32b1 PR ld/21334: Always call `_bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms' if required
Complement commit e17b0c351f ("MIPS/BFD: Respect the ELF gABI dynamic
symbol table sort requirement") and correct an inconsistency in dynamic
symbol accounting data causing an assertion failure in the MIPS backend:

ld: BFD (GNU Binutils) 2.28.51.20170330 assertion fail
../../binutils-gdb/bfd/elfxx-mips.c:3860

in the course of making a GOT entry in a static binary to satisfy a GOT
relocation present in input, due to the local dynamic symbol count not
having been established.

To do so let backends request `_bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms' to be
always called, rather than where a dynamic binary is linked only, and
then make this request in the MIPS backend.

Alan Modra 5474d94f03 dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executable
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's
.bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would
require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in
the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into
the executable to gain a small speed improvement.

The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy
in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch
cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes
read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force.

The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to
use dynamic bss variables.

Alan Modra 52d45da3f2 Make bfd_error_handler_type like vprintf
It was like printf, which means you can't use bfd_set_error_handler to
hook in a function to do something and then call the original handler.

The patch also deletes some unused functions and makes pointers local.

Alan Modra 005d79fd61 PowerPC .gnu.attributes
This patch extends Tag_GNU_Power_ABI_FP to cover long double ABIs,
makes the assembler warn about undefined tag values, and removes
similar warnings from the linker. I think it is better to not
warn in the linker about undefined tag values as future extensions to
the tags then won't result in likely bogus warnings. This is
consistent with the fact that an older linker won't warn on an
entirely new tag.
