This patch started by changing target_read_alloc_1 to return a
byte_vector, to avoid manual memory management (in target_read_alloc_1
and in the callers). To communicate failures to the callers, it
actually returns a gdb::optional<gdb::byte_vector>.
Adjusting target_read_stralloc was a bit more tricky, since it wants to
return a buffer of char, and not gdb_byte. Since you can't just cast a
gdb::byte_vector into a gdb::def_vector<char>, I made
target_read_alloc_1 templated, so both versions (that return vectors of
gdb_byte and char) are generated. Since target_read_stralloc now
returns a gdb::char_vector instead of a gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>, a
few callers need to be adjusted.

This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).
Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.
Regression tested on the buildbot.

This patch converts the generic probe interface (gdb/probe.[ch]) to
C++, and also performs some cleanups that were on my TODO list for a
while.
The main changes were the conversion of 'struct probe' to 'class
probe', and 'struct probe_ops' to 'class static_probe_ops'. The
former now contains all the "dynamic", generic methods that act on a
probe + the generic data related to it; the latter encapsulates a
bunch of "static" methods that relate to the probe type, but not to a
specific probe itself.
I've had to do a few renamings (e.g., on 'struct bound_probe' the
field is called 'probe *prob' now, instead of 'struct probe *probe')
because GCC was complaining about naming the field using the same name
as the class. Nothing major, though. Generally speaking, the logic
behind and the design behind the code are the same.
Even though I'm sending a series of patches, they need to be tested
and committed as a single unit, because of inter-dependencies. But it
should be easier to review in separate logical units.
I've regtested this patch on BuildBot, no regressions found.

If you want to use catch_errors with a function with parameters, then
currently you have to manually write a "capture" struct wrapping the
arguments and marshall/unmarshall that.
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-09/msg00834.html proposed
adjusting catch_errors to use gdb::function_view, which would allow
passing lambdas with automatic captures. However, it seems like using
TRY/CATCH directly instead ends up producing clearer and easier to
debug code. This is what this commit does.
Note that removing catch_errors exposes further cleanup opportunities
around no longer having to follow catch_errors callback type, and also
removes a few cleanups.
I didn't do anything to save/restore current_uiout because I think
that should be the responsibility of the code that changes
current_uiout in the first place.
(Another approach could be to make catch_errors a variadic template
like:
template<typename Function, typename... Args>
int catch_errors (const char *errstring, return_mask mask,
Function &&func, Args... args);
and then with:
extern void function_with_args (int, int);
extern void function_with_no_args ();
calls to the above functions would be wrapped like this:
catch_errors ("some error happened", RETURN_MASK_ERROR,
function_with_args, arg1, arg2);
catch_errors ("some error happened", RETURN_MASK_ERROR,
function_with_no_args);
but I'm thinking that that doesn't improve much if at all either.)

This patch makes lm_info_svr4 a "real" class. It initializes fields,
uses bool and replaces XCNEW/xfree with new/delete.
The memcpy in svr4_copy_library_list is replaced by a usage of the
default copy constructor.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* solib-svr4.h (struct lm_info_svr4): Initialize fields.
<l_addr_p>: Change type to bool.
* solib-svr4.c (lm_info_read): Allocate lm_info_svr4 with new.

(svr4_copy_library_list): Replace memcpy with call to copy

(library_list_start_library, svr4_default_sos): Allocate
lm_info_svr4 with new.
The lm_info structure is used to store target specific information about
mapped libraries. It is currently defined as an opaque type in solist.h
and a pointer to it is included in solist, the target-agnostic object
representing a loaded shared library. Multiple targets define their own
implementation of lm_info.
In anticipation of using C++ stuff (e.g. vector) in the lm_info objects,
we first need to avoid different definitions of classes with the same
name (which violates the one definition rule). This patch does it by
having a base class (lm_info_base) from which all the specific lm_info
derive. Each implementation is renamed to something that makes sense
(e.g. lm_info_aix for AIX). The next logical step would probably be to
derive directly from so_list, it's not really obvious, so I'll keep that
for another day.
One special case is the Neutrino (nto) support. It uses SVR4-style
libraries, but overrides some methods. To do that, it needed to have
its own copy of SVR4's lm_info structure in nto-tdep.c, because it was
just not possible to put it in solib-svr4.h and include that file. Over
time, that copy got out of sync, which is still the case today. I can
only assume that the lm_addr function in nto-tdep.c is broken right now.
The first field of the old lm_info was a pointer (gdb_byte *), whereas
in the new lm_info it's an address in the inferior (CORE_ADDR). Trying
to use that field today probably results in a crash. With this
refactor, it's now possible to put lm_info_svr4 in solib-svr4.h and just
include it. I have adapted the code in nto-tdep.c to that it builds,
but it's probably not correct. Since I don't have the knowledge nor
setup to try this on Neutrino, somebody else would have to fix it. But
I am confident that I am not making things worse than they already are.

This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used
to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to
use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or
cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref.
If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use
of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next
patch.
I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to
me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD.
I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is
correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. One goal
of this sort of automated reference counting, though, is to make it
more difficult to make logic errors; so hopefully the code is clear
now.

The immediate cause of the segv is that follow_exec is passing a NULL
argument (the result of exec_file_find) to strlen.
However, the problem is deeper than that: follow_exec simply isn't
prepared for the case where sysroot translation fails to locate the
new executable. Actually all callers of exec_file_find have bugs due
to confusion between host and target pathnames. This commit attempts
to fix all that.
In terms of the testcases that were formerly segv'ing, GDB now prints
a warning but continues execution of the new program, so that the
tests now mostly FAIL instead. You could argue the FAILs are due to a
legitimate problem with the test environment setting up the sysroot
translation incorrectly.
A new representative test is added which exercises the ne wwarning
code path even with native testing.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 23, native and gdbserver.

Yet another BuildBot e-mail, yet another breakage on RHEL-7.1 s390x

BuildBot e-mailed me to let me know that my last commit broke GDB on
RHEL-7.1 s390x. On solib-svr4.c:svr4_handle_solib_event, 'val' now
needs to be initialized as NULL because it is inside a TRY..CATCH
block. This patch does that. Pushed as obvious.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2015-09-01 Sergio Durigan Junior <sergiodj@redhat.com>
* solib-svr4.c (svr4_handle_solib_event): Initialize 'val' as NULL
This patch is intended to make the interaction between the
probes-based dynamic linker interface and the SystemTap SDT probe code
on GDB more robust. It does that by wrapping the calls to the probe
API with TRY...CATCH'es, so that any exception thrown will be caught
and handled properly.
The idea for this patch came from
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1196181>, which is a bug
initially filed against Fedora GDB (but now under Fedora GLIBC). This
bug happens on armhfp (although it could happen on other targets as
well), and is triggered because GCC generates a strange argument for
one of the probes used by GDB in the dynamic linker interface. As can
be seen in the bug, this argument is "-4@.L1052".
I don't want to discuss the reasons for this argument to be there
(this discussion belongs to the bug, or to another thread), but GDB
could definitely do a better error handling here. Currently, one sees
the following message when there is an error in the probes-based
dynamic linker interface:
(gdb) run
Starting program: /bin/inferior
warning: Probes-based dynamic linker interface failed.
Reverting to original interface.
Cannot parse expression `.L976 4@r4'.
(gdb)
Which means that one needs to explicitly issue a "continue" command to
make GDB continue running the inferior, even though this error is not
fatal and GDB will fallback to the old interface automatically.
This is where this patch helps: it makes GDB still print the necessary
warnings or error messages, but it *also* does not stop the inferior
unnecessarily.
I have tested this patch on the systems where this error happens, but
I could not come up with a way to create a testcase for it.
Nevertheless, it should be straightforward to see that this patch does
improve the current situation.

As Pedro suggested on gdb-patches@ (see
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-05/msg00714.html), this
change makes symbol lookup functions return a structure that includes
both the symbol found and the block in which it was found. This makes
it possible to get rid of the block_found global variable and thus makes
block hunting explicit.

gdb/ChangeLog:
* solib-svr4.c (svr4_exec_displacement): Rename outer "displacement"
to "exec_displacement" to avoid confusion with inner use of the name.
When loading a corefile that has some inaccessible memory region(s),
GDB complains about it:
(gdb) core /my/corefile
[New LWP 28468]
Cannot access memory at address 0x355fc21148
Cannot access memory at address 0x355fc21140
(gdb)
However, despite not seeing the message "Core was generated by...", it
is still possible to inspect the corefile using regular GDB commands.
The reason for that is because read_memory_unsigned_integer throws an
exception when it cannot read the memory region, but
solib_svr4_r_ldsomap was not catching it. The fix is to catch the
exception and act accordingly.
Tested on Fedora 20 x86_64, no regressions found.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2015-03-31 Sergio Durigan Junior <sergiodj@redhat.com>
* solib-svr4.c (solib_svr4_r_ldsomap): Catch possible exception by
read_memory_unsigned_integer.
This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from
this:
~~~
volatile gdb_exception ex;
TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
if (ex.reason < 0)
{
}
~~~
to this:
~~~
TRY
{
}
CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
END_CATCH
~~~
Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and
declaring the caught exception in the catch block.
This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when
building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode
(using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step.
TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY
and the CATCH blocks, like:
TRY
{
}
// some code here.
CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
END_CATCH
Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch.
By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block
scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile
exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more
directly to C++'s catch blocks.
The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was
done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual
editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places
needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were
using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases
where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH
after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB
still builds at each incremental step.
END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons:
First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which
requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere.
Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for
block, like:
#define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \
for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \
exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \
EXCEPTION = exception_none)
would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90,
which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code.
Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as
long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH
block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every
frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will
be done in END_CATCH.
After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until
cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will
save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH
catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so
that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist.
IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a
newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering
C++.

gdb/gdbserver/ChangeLog:
2015-03-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
Adjust all callers of TRY_CATCH to use TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH
instead.
This normalizes some exception catch blocks that check for ex.reason
to look like this:
~~~
volatile gdb_exception ex;
TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ALL)
{
...
}
if (ex.reason < 0)
{
...
}
~~~
This is a preparation step for running a script that converts all
TRY_CATCH uses to look like this instead:
~~~
TRY
{
...
}
CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ALL)
{
...
}
END_CATCH
~~~
The motivation for that change is being able to reimplent TRY/CATCH in
terms of C++ try/catch.
This commit makes it so that:
- no condition other than ex.reason < 0 is checked in the if
predicate
- there's no "else" block to check whether no exception was caught
- there's no code between the TRY_CATCH (TRY) block and the
'if (ex.reason < 0)' block (CATCH).
- the exception object is no longer referred to outside the if/catch
block. Note the local volatile exception objects that are
currently defined inside functions that use TRY_CATCH will
disappear. In cases it's more convenient to still refer to the
exception outside the catch block, a new non-volatile local is
added and copy to that object is made within the catch block.
The following patches should make this all clearer.

This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are
reserved keywords in C++.
Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script.
Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc.
And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running
the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not
result in the exact same output. I don't think that matters anyway.

I am just not sure if we should go the route of
struct objfile * -> const struct objfile *
or the other way of:
const struct objfile * -> struct objfile *
Normally const adding is better but here I do not see much useful to have any
struct objfile * const and then it just causes pointer compatibility problems.

With upstream glibc, GDB prints:
warning: Could not load shared library symbols for linux-vdso.so.1.
Do you need "set solib-search-path" or "set sysroot"?
A bug's been filed for glibc a few years back:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=13097
but it's still not resolved. It's not clear whether there's even
consensus that this is indeed a glibc bug. It would actually be nice
if GDB also listed the vDSO in the shared library list, but there are
some design considerations with that:
- the vDSO is mapped by the kernel, not userspace, therefore we
should load its symbols right from the process's start of life,
even before glibc / the userspace loader sets up the initial DSO
list. The program might even be using a custom loader or no
loader.
- that kind of hints at that solib.c should handle retrieving shared
library lists from more than one source, and that symfile-mem.c's
loading of the vDSO would be converted to load and relocate the
vDSO's bfd behind the target_so_ops interface.
- and then, once glibc links in the vDSO to its DSO list, we'd need
to either:
a) somehow hand over the vDSO from one target_so_ops to the other
b) simply keep hiding glibc's entry.
And then b) seems the simplest.
With that in mind, this patch simply discards the vDSO from glibc's
reported shared library list.
We can match the vDSO address range with the addresses found iterating
the dynamic linker list, to tell which dynamic linker entry is the
vDSO.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20.

"library-list.dtd" instead.
Curiously after changing for a test s/name/nXme/ in the DTD making the
gdbserver output non-conforming there is no warning or regression seen (tested

I saw this gem of not so legible code in solib-svr4.c (scan_dyntag):

This just renames variables to be a bit more clear for those who read the

This changes the probes to be independent of the program space.
After this, when a probe's address is needed, it is determined by
applying offsets at the point of use.
This introduces a bound_probe object, similar to bound minimal
symbols. Objects of this type are used when it's necessary to pass a
probe and its corresponding objfile.
This removes the backlink from probe to objfile, which was primarily
used to fetch the architecture to use.
This adds a get_probe_address function which calls a probe method to
compute the probe's relocated address. Similarly, it adds an objfile
parameter to the semaphore methods so they can do the relocation
properly as well.
