ACPICA commit c508f8592efaa0d8197f26d7fee6382c5ac8e383
Current code flow cannot ensure _REG association can happen after the
namespace is initialized, so we move _REG association to where _REG was
about to run to fix this issue.
This issue is detected when acpi_ev_initialize_region() is invoked during
the table loading. And this is one of the most important the root cause why
ACPICA table loading is split into 2 load passes. Lv Zheng.

There are several reports of freeze on enabling HWP (Hardware PStates)
feature on Skylake-based systems by the Intel P-states driver. The root
cause is identified as the HWP interrupts causing BIOS code to freeze.
HWP interrupts use the thermal LVT which can be handled by Linux
natively, but on the affected Skylake-based systems SMM will respond
to it by default. This is a problem for several reasons:
- On the affected systems the SMM thermal LVT handler is broken (it
will crash when invoked) and a BIOS update is necessary to fix it.
- With thermal interrupt handled in SMM we lose all of the reporting
features of the arch/x86/kernel/cpu/mcheck/therm_throt driver.
- Some thermal drivers like x86-package-temp depend on the thermal
threshold interrupts signaled via the thermal LVT.
- The HWP interrupts are useful for debugging and tuning
performance (if the kernel can handle them).
The native handling of thermal interrupts needs to be enabled
because of that.
This requires some way to tell SMM that the OS can handle thermal
interrupts. That can be done by using _OSC/_PDC in processor
scope very early during ACPI initialization.
The meaning of _OSC/_PDC bit 12 in processor scope is whether or
not the OS supports native handling of interrupts for Collaborative
Processor Performance Control (CPPC) notifications. Since on
HWP-capable systems CPPC is a firmware interface to HWP, setting
this bit effectively tells the firmware that the OS will handle
thermal interrupts natively going forward.
For details on _OSC/_PDC refer to:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/standards/processor-vendor-specific-acpi-specification.html
To implement the _OSC/_PDC handshake as described, introduce a new
function, acpi_early_processor_osc(), that walks the ACPI
namespace looking for ACPI processor objects and invokes _OSC for
them with bit 12 in the capabilities buffer set and terminates the
namespace walk on the first success.
Also modify intel_thermal_interrupt() to clear HWP status bits in
the HWP_STATUS MSR to acknowledge HWP interrupts (which prevents
them from firing continuously).

Commit 58a1fbbb2e ("PM / PCI / ACPI: Kick devices that might have been
reset by firmware") added a runtime resume for devices that were runtime
suspended when the system entered suspend-to-RAM.
Briefly, the motivation was to ensure that devices did not remain in a
reset-power-on state after resume, potentially preventing deep SoC-wide
low-power states from being entered on idle.
Currently we're not doing the same when leaving suspend-to-disk and this
asymmetry is a problem if drivers rely on the automatic resume triggered
by pm_complete_with_resume_check(). Fix it.

The [0 - 64k] ACPI PCI IO port resource boundary check in:
acpi_dev_ioresource_flags()
is currently applied blindly in the ACPI resource parsing to all
architectures, but only x86 suffers from that IO space limitation.
On arches (ie IA64 and ARM64) where IO space is memory mapped,
the PCI root bridges IO resource windows are firstly initialized from
the _CRS (in acpi_decode_space()) and contain the CPU physical address
at which a root bridge decodes IO space in the CPU physical address
space with the offset value representing the offset required to translate
the PCI bus address into the CPU physical address.
The IO resource windows are then parsed and updated in arch code
before creating and enumerating PCI buses (eg IA64 add_io_space())
to map in an arch specific way the obtained CPU physical address range
to a slice of virtual address space reserved to map PCI IO space,
ending up with PCI bridges resource windows containing IO
resources like the following on a working IA64 configuration:
PCI host bridge to bus 0000:00
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [io 0x1000000-0x100ffff window] (bus
address [0x0000-0xffff])
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x000a0000-0x000fffff window]
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x80000000-0x8fffffff window]
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x80004000000-0x800ffffffff window]
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [bus 00]
This implies that the [0 - 64K] check in acpi_dev_ioresource_flags()
leaves platforms with memory mapped IO space (ie IA64) broken (ie kernel
can't claim IO resources since the host bridge IO resource is disabled
and discarded by ACPI core code, see log on IA64 with missing root bridge
IO resource, silently filtered by current [0 - 64k] check in
acpi_dev_ioresource_flags()):
PCI host bridge to bus 0000:00
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x000a0000-0x000fffff window]
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x80000000-0x8fffffff window]
pci_bus 0000:00: root bus resource [mem 0x80004000000-0x800ffffffff window]

pci 0000:00:03.0: can't claim BAR 1 [io 0x1000-0x10ff]: no compatible
bridge window
For this reason, the IO port resources boundaries check in generic ACPI
parsing code should be guarded with a CONFIG_X86 guard so that more arches
(ie ARM64) can benefit from the generic ACPI resources parsing interface
without incurring in unexpected resource filtering, fixing at the same
time current breakage on IA64.
This patch factors out IO ports boundary [0 - 64k] check in generic ACPI
code and makes the IO space check X86 specific to make sure that IO
space resources are usable on other arches too.

1/ Asynchronous address range scrub:
Given the capacities of next generation persistent memory devices a
scrub operation to find all poison may take 10s of seconds. We want
this scrub work to be done asynchronously with the rest of system
initialization, so we move it out of line from the NFIT probing, i.e.
acpi_nfit_add().
2/ Clear poison:
ACPI 6.1 introduces the ability to send "clear error" commands to the
ACPI0012:00 device representing the root of an "nvdimm bus". Similar to
relocating a bad block on a disk, this support clears media errors in
response to a write.
3/ Persistent memory resource tracking:
A persistent memory range may be designated as simply "reserved" by
platform firmware in the efi/e820 memory map. Later when the NFIT
driver loads it discovers that the range is "Persistent Memory". The
NFIT bus driver inserts a resource to advertise that "persistent"
attribute in the system resource tree for /proc/iomem and
kernel-internal usages.
4/ Miscellaneous cleanups and fixes:
Workaround section misaligned pmem ranges when allocating a struct page
memmap, fix handling of the read-only case in the ioctl path, and clean
up block device major number allocation.

Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams:
- Asynchronous address range scrub:
Given the capacities of next generation persistent memory devices a
scrub operation to find all poison may take 10s of seconds. We
want this scrub work to be done asynchronously with the rest of
system initialization, so we move it out of line from the NFIT
probing, i.e. acpi_nfit_add().
- Clear poison:
ACPI 6.1 introduces the ability to send "clear error" commands to
the ACPI0012:00 device representing the root of an "nvdimm bus".
Similar to relocating a bad block on a disk, this support clears
media errors in response to a write.
- Persistent memory resource tracking:
A persistent memory range may be designated as simply "reserved" by
platform firmware in the efi/e820 memory map. Later when the NFIT
driver loads it discovers that the range is "Persistent Memory".
The NFIT bus driver inserts a resource to advertise that
"persistent" attribute in the system resource tree for /proc/iomem
and kernel-internal usages.
- Miscellaneous cleanups and fixes:
Workaround section misaligned pmem ranges when allocating a struct
page memmap, fix handling of the read-only case in the ioctl path,
and clean up block device major number allocation.

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time the majority of changes go into cpufreq and they are
significant.
First off, the way CPU frequency updates are triggered is different
now. Instead of having to set up and manage a deferrable timer for
each CPU in the system to evaluate and possibly change its frequency
periodically, cpufreq governors set up callbacks to be invoked by the
scheduler on a regular basis (basically on utilization updates). The
"old" governors, "ondemand" and "conservative", still do all of their
work in process context (although that is triggered by the scheduler
now), but intel_pstate does it all in the callback invoked by the
scheduler with no need for any additional asynchronous processing.
Of course, this eliminates the overhead related to the management of
all those timers, but also it allows the cpufreq governor code to be
simplified quite a bit. On top of that, the common code and data
structures used by the "ondemand" and "conservative" governors are
cleaned up and made more straightforward and some long-standing and
quite annoying problems are addressed. In particular, the handling of
governor sysfs attributes is modified and the related locking becomes
more fine grained which allows some concurrency problems to be avoided
(particularly deadlocks with the core cpufreq code).
In principle, the new mechanism for triggering frequency updates
allows utilization information to be passed from the scheduler to
cpufreq. Although the current code doesn't make use of it, in the
works is a new cpufreq governor that will make decisions based on the
scheduler's utilization data. That should allow the scheduler and
cpufreq to work more closely together in the long run.
In addition to the core and governor changes, cpufreq drivers are
updated too. Fixes and optimizations go into intel_pstate, the
cpufreq-dt driver is updated on top of some modification in the
Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework and there are fixes and
other updates in the powernv cpufreq driver.
Apart from the cpufreq updates there is some new ACPICA material,
including a fix for a problem introduced by previous ACPICA updates,
and some less significant changes in the ACPI code, like CPPC code
optimizations, ACPI processor driver cleanups and support for loading
ACPI tables from initrd.
Also updated are the generic power domains framework, the Intel RAPL
power capping driver and the turbostat utility and we have a bunch of
traditional assorted fixes and cleanups.

- Redesign of cpufreq governors and the intel_pstate driver to make
them use callbacks invoked by the scheduler to trigger CPU

This tree introduces a new I/O resource type, IORESOURCE_SYSTEM_RAM,

It is reported that the following commit triggers regressions:
Linux commit: efaed9be99
ACPICA commit: 31178590dde82368fdb0f6b0e466b6c0add96c57
Subject: ACPICA: Events: Enhance acpi_ev_execute_reg_method() to
ensure no _REG evaluations can happen during OS early boot
stages
This is because that the ECDT support is not corrected in Linux, and Linux
requires to execute _REG for ECDT (though this sounds so wrong), we need to
ensure acpi_gbl_namespace_initialized is set before ECDT probing in order
for _REG to be executed. Since we have to move
"acpi_gbl_namespace_initialized = TRUE" to the initialization step
happening before ECDT probing, acpi_load_tables() is the best candidate for
now. Thus this patch fixes the regression by doing so.
But if the ECDT support is fixed, Linux will not execute _REG for ECDT, and
ECDT probing will happen before acpi_load_tables(). At that time, we still
want to ensure acpi_gbl_namespace_initialized is set after executing
acpi_ns_initialize_objects() (under the condition of
acpi_gbl_group_module_level_code = FALSE), this patch also moves
acpi_ns_initialize_objects() to acpi_load_tables() accordingly.
Since acpi_ns_initialize_objects() doesn't seem to be skippable, this
patch also removes ACPI_NO_OBJECT_INIT for the one invoked in
acpi_load_tables(). And since the default region handlers should always be
installed before loading the tables, this patch also removes useless
acpi_gbl_group_module_level_code check accordingly. Reported by Chris
Bainbridge, Fixed by Lv Zheng.

We do not have a strict read/write order requirement while accessing
PCC subspace. The only requirement is all access should be committed
before triggering the PCC doorbell to transfer the ownership of PCC
to the platform and this requirement is enforced by the PCC driver.
Profiling on a many core system shows improvement of about 1.8us on
average per freq change request(about 10% improvement on average).
Since these operations are executed while holding the pcc_lock,
reducing this time helps the CPPC implementation to scale much
better as the number of cores increases.

cpc_read and cpc_write are used while holding the pcc_lock spin_lock,
so they need to be as fast as possible. acpi_os_read/write_memory
APIs linearly search through a list for cached mapping which is
quite expensive. Since the PCC subspace is already mapped into
virtual address space during initialization, we can just add the
offset and access the necessary CPPC registers.
This patch + similar changes to PCC driver reduce the time per freq.

Previously the send_pcc_cmd() code checked if the
PCC operation had completed before returning from
the function. This check was performed regardless
of the PCC op type (i.e. Read/Write). Knowing
the type of cmd can be used to optimize the check
and avoid needless waiting. e.g. with Write ops,
the actual Writing is done before calling send_pcc_cmd().
And the subsequent Writes will check if the channel is
free at the entry of send_pcc_cmd() anyway.
However, for Read cmds, we need to wait for the cmd
completion bit to be flipped, since the actual Read
ops follow after returning from the send_pcc_cmd(). So,
only do the looping check at the end for Read ops.
Also, instead of using udelay() calls, use ktime as a
means to check for deadlines. The current deadline
in which the Remote should flip the cmd completion bit
is defined as N * Nominal latency. Where N is arbitrary
and large enough to work on slow emulators and Nominal
latency comes from the ACPI table (PCCT). This helps
in working around the CONFIG_HZ effects on udelay()
and also avoids needing different ACPI tables for Silicon
and Emulation platforms.

ACPI 6 defines persistent memory (PMEM) ranges in multiple
firmware interfaces, e820, EFI, and ACPI NFIT table. This EFI
change, however, leads to hit a bug in the grub bootloader, which
treats EFI_PERSISTENT_MEMORY type as regular memory and corrupts
stored user data [1].
Therefore, BIOS may set generic reserved type in e820 and EFI to
cover PMEM ranges. The kernel can initialize PMEM ranges from
ACPI NFIT table alone.
This scheme causes a problem in the iomem table, though. On x86,
for instance, e820_reserve_resources() initializes top-level entries
(iomem_resource.child) from the e820 table at early boot-time.
This creates "reserved" entry for a PMEM range, which does not allow
region_intersects() to check with PMEM type.
Change acpi_nfit_register_region() to call acpi_nfit_insert_resource(),
which calls insert_resource() to insert a PMEM entry from NFIT when
the iomem table does not have a PMEM entry already. That is, when
a PMEM range is marked as reserved type in e820, it inserts
"Persistent Memory" entry, which results as follows.
+ "Persistent Memory"
+ "reserved"
This allows the EINJ driver, which calls region_intersects() to check
PMEM ranges, to work continuously even if BIOS sets reserved type
(or sets nothing) to PMEM ranges in e820 and EFI.

Per the x86-specific footnote to PCI spec r3.0, sec 6.2.4, the value 255 in
the Interrupt Line register means "unknown" or "no connection."
Previously, when we couldn't derive an IRQ from the _PRT, we fell back to
using the value from Interrupt Line as an IRQ. It's questionable whether
we should do that at all, but the spec clearly suggests we shouldn't do it
for the value 255 on x86.
Calling request_irq() with IRQ 255 may succeed, but the driver won't
receive any interrupts. Or, if IRQ 255 is shared with another device, it
may succeed, and the driver's ISR will be called at random times when the
*other* device interrupts. Or it may fail if another device is using IRQ
255 with incompatible flags. What we *want* is for request_irq() to fail
predictably so the driver can fall back to polling.
On x86, assume 255 in the Interrupt Line means the INTx line is not
connected. In that case, set dev->irq to IRQ_NOTCONNECTED so request_irq()
will fail gracefully with -ENOTCONN.
We found this problem on a system where Secure Boot firmware assigned
Interrupt Line 255 to an i801_smbus device and another device was already
using MSI-X IRQ 255. This was in v3.10, where i801_probe() fails if
request_irq() fails:
i801_smbus 0000:00:1f.3: enabling device (0140 -> 0143)

After aeb8a3d16a ("i2c: i801: Check if interrupts are disabled"),
i801_probe() will fall back to polling if request_irq() fails. But we
still need this patch because request_irq() may succeed or fail depending
on other devices in the system. If request_irq() fails, i801_smbus will
work by falling back to polling, but if it succeeds, i801_smbus won't work
because it expects interrupts that it may not receive.

Address range scrub is a potentially long running process that we want
to complete before any pmem regions are registered. Perform this
operation asynchronously to allow other drivers to load in the meantime.
Platform firmware may have initiated a partial scrub prior to the driver
loading, so we must be careful to consume those results before kicking
off kernel initiated scrubs on other regions.
This rework also makes the registration path more tolerant of scrub
errors in that it splits scrubbing into 2 phases. The first phase
synchronously waits for a platform-firmware initiated scrub to complete.
The second phase scans the remaining address ranges asynchronously and
notifies the related driver(s) when the scrub completes.

991de2e590 ("PCI, x86: Implement pcibios_alloc_irq() and

Олег reported that the Elcus-1553 TA1-PCI driver worked in v4.2 but not
v4.3 and bisected it to 991de2e590. Sunjin reported that the RocketRAID

"pci=routirq" is a workaround.
I think the problem is that after 991de2e590, we no longer call
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges. Prior to 991de2e590, when a
driver called pci_enable_device(), we recursively called
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges via pci_enable_bridge().
After 991de2e590, we call pcibios_enable_irq() from pci_device_probe()
instead of the pci_enable_device() path, which does *not* call
pcibios_enable_irq() for upstream bridges.

This patch tunes _REG evaluations to be later than all table loading
facilities:
1. acpi_load_tables(): _REG is currently invoked after this function.
2. acpi_ns_exec_module_code_list(): this executes module level code, the
execution should be a part of the table loading while we currently
support this in a deferred way.
3. acpi_ns_initialize_objects(): this parses Region/Field/Buffer/Package where
pkg_length primitive can be seen in the grammar, the parsing should be a
part of the table loading while we currently support this in a deferred
way.
Control method evaluation should happen after loading the tables. So this
patch changes the order of _REG evaluation when

Changes include:
1/ New 'restart' fields in ars_status, unfortunately these are
implemented in the middle of the existing definition so this change
is not backwards compatible. The expectation is that shipping
platforms will only ever support the ACPI 6.1 definition.
2/ New status values for ars_start ('busy') and ars_status ('overflow').

acpi_processor_sleep is neither related nor used by CPUIdle framework.
It's used in system suspend/resume path as a syscore operation. It makes
more sense to move it to acpi/sleep.c where all the S-state transition
(a.k.a. Linux system suspend/hiberate) related code are present.
Also make it depend on CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM_POWER_STATES_SUPPORT so that
it's not compiled on architecture like ARM64 where S-states are not
yet defined in ACPI.

ACPI 6.0 adds support for optional processor container device which may
contain child objects that are either processor devices or other processor
containers. This allows representing hierarchical processor topologies.
It is declared using the _HID of ACPI0010. It is an abstract container
used to represent CPU topology and should not be used to hotplug
purposes.
If no matching handler is found for a device in acpi_scan_attach_handler,
acpi_bus_attach does a default enumeration for those devices with valid
HID in the acpi namespace. This patch adds a scan handler for these ACPI
processor containers to avoid default that enumeration and ensures the
platform devices are not created for them.

Use the output length specified in the command to size the receive

This bug was hiding the fact that the ndctl implementation of
ndctl_bus_cmd_new_ars_status() was not specifying an output buffer size.

ACPI 6.1 clarified that multi-interface dimms require multiple control
region entries (DCRs) per dimm. Previously we were assuming that a
control region is only present when block-data-windows are present.
This implementation was done with an eye to be compatibility with the
looser ACPI 6.0 interpretation of this table.
1/ When coalescing the memory device (MEMDEV) tables for a single dimm,
coalesce on device_handle rather than control region index.
2/ Whenever we disocver a control region with non-zero block windows
re-scan for block-data-window (BDW) entries.
We may need to revisit this if a DIMM ever implements a format interface
outside of blk or pmem, but that is not on the foreseeable horizon.

In the case of memory error injection, einj_error_inject()
checks if a target address is System RAM. Change this check to
allow injecting a memory error into NVDIMM memory by calling
region_intersects() with IORES_DESC_PERSISTENT_MEMORY. This
enables memory error testing on both System RAM and NVDIMM.
In addition, page_is_ram() is replaced with region_intersects()
with IORESOURCE_SYSTEM_RAM, so that it can verify a target
address range with the requested size.

The quirk to get "acpi_backlight=vendor" behavior by default on the
Dell Inspiron 5737 was added before we started doing
"acpi_backlight=native" by default on Win8 ready machines.
Since we now avoid using acpi-video as backlight driver on these machines
by default (using the native driver instead) we no longer need this quirk.
Moreover the vendor driver does not work after a suspend/resume where
as the native driver does.
This reverts commit 08a56226d8 (ACPI / video: Add Dell Inspiron 5737

Pull more power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This includes fixes on top of the previous batch of PM+ACPI updates
and some new material as well.
From the new material perspective the most significant are the driver
core changes that should allow USB devices to stay suspended over
system suspend/resume cycles if they have been runtime-suspended
already beforehand. Apart from that, ACPICA is updated to upstream
revision 20160108 (cosmetic mostly, but including one fixup on top of
the previous ACPICA update) and there are some devfreq updates the
didn't make it before (due to timing).
A few recent regressions are fixed, most importantly in the cpuidle
menu governor and in the ACPI backlight driver and some x86 platform
drivers depending on it.
Some more bugs are fixed and cleanups are made on top of that.

Adds a function that sets the pointer to dev_pm_domain in struct device
and that warns if the device has already finished probing. The reason
why we want to enforce that is because in the general case that can
cause problems and also that we can simplify code quite a bit if we can
always assume that.
This patch also changes all current code that directly sets the
dev.pm_domain pointer.

This is a third approach to workaround long standing issue with LPSS on
BayTrail. First one [1] was reverted since it didn't resolve the issue
comprehensively. Second one [2] was rejected by internal review.
The LPSS DMA controller does not have neither _PS0 nor _PS3 method. Moreover it
can be powered off automatically whenever the last LPSS device goes down. In
case of no power any access to the DMA controller will hang the system. The
behaviour is reproduced on some HP laptops based on Intel BayTrail [3,4] as
well as on ASuS T100TA transformer.

acpi_video_handles_brightness_key_presses() may use an uninitialized mutex.
The error has been reported by lockdep: DEBUG_LOCKS_WARN_ON(l->magic != l).
The function assumes that the video driver has been registered before being
called. As explained in the comment of acpi_video_init(), the registration
of the video class may be defered and thus may not take place in the init
function of the module.
Use completion mechanisms to make sure that

acpi_video_register() before using the mutex.
Also get rid of register_count since task completion can replace it.

Commit f06147f9fb (ACPICA: Hardware: Enable firmware waking vector
for both 32-bit and 64-bit FACS) added three functions that aren't
present in upstream ACPICA, acpi_hw_set_firmware_waking_vectors(),
acpi_set_firmware_waking_vectors() and acpi_set_firmware_waking_vector64(),
to allow Linux to use the previously existing API for setting the
platform firmware waking vector.
However, that wasn't necessary, since the ACPI sleep support code
in Linux can be modified to use the upstream ACPICA's API easily
and the additional functions may be dropped which reduces the code
size and puts the kernel's ACPICA code more in line with the upstream.
Make the changes as per the above. While at it, make the relevant
function desctiption comments reflect the upstream ACPICA's ones.

ACPICA commit 1cf1a1e090f61f0c27f1dcf1905c7cc79a9c51c8
It is likely that we should synchronously invoke _REG(DISCONNECT) only when
the acpi_remove_address_space_handler() is invoked because of dependencies.
If it is invoked when the object is not referenced, problem may occur
if the operation region fields accessed in _REG are no longer driven by any
device driver.
Noticed that _REG(CONNECT)/_REG(DISCONNECT) only mean to inform the AML of
the handler availability, no return value is required for the caller.
This patch only introduces ACPI_REG_DISCONNECT invaocation, but doesn't
introduce a real change. Lv Zheng.

ACPICA commit 31178590dde82368fdb0f6b0e466b6c0add96c57
We can ensure no early _REG evaluations by ensuring the following rules in
acpi_ev_execute_reg_method():
1. If an address space handler is installed during early stage,
_REG(CONNECT) evaluations are blocked. This is achieved using
acpi_gbl_reg_methods_enabled which is renamed from
acpi_gbl_reg_methods_executed.
2. If _REG(CONNECT) has never been evalauted for the region object,
_REG(DISCONNECT) evaluations are blocked. This is achieved by a new
region object flag: AOPOBJ_REG_CONNECTED.
Note that, after applying this patch, we can ensure _REG(DISCONNECT) is
always paired to _REG(CONNECT). Lv Zheng

This reverts commit 8e7a8753827660c3dd1f571f3185610402b756f0.
The _SUB method was found to be problematic for this interface
because some implementations use control methods. Therefore,
it is being removed.
Operations cannot be used because this interface is called
during the device discovery scan and the region handlers are
not fully installed at that time.

The Dell Vostro V131 has an especially broken acpi-video implementation.
The backlight control bits work, but when the brightness is changed via
the acpi-video interface the backlight flickers annoyingly before settling
at the new brightness, switching to using the native interface fixes the
flickering so add a quirk for this (the vendor interface has the same
problem).
Brightness keypresses reported through the acpi-video-bus are also broken,
they get reported one event delayed, so if you press the brightness-up
hotkey on the keyboard nothing happens, then if you press brightness-down,
the previous brightness-up event gets reported. Since the keypresses are
also reported via wmi (if active) and via atkbd (when wmi is not active)
add a quirk to simply filter out the delayed (broken) events.

Add a module option to disable the reporting of keypresses, in some buggy
firmware implementatinon, the reported events are wrong. E.g. they lag
reality by one event in the case triggering the writing of this patch.
In this case it is better to not forward these wrong events to userspace
(esp.) when there is another source of the same events which is not buggy.
Note this is only intended to work around implementations which send
events which are plain wrong. In some cases we get double events, e.g.
from both acpi-video and the atkbd driver, in this case acpi-video is
considered the canonical source, and the events from the other source
should be filtered (using e.g. /lib/udev/hwdb.d/60-keyboard.hwdb).

Several drivers want to know if the acpi-video is generating key-presses
for brightness change hotkeys to avoid sending double key-events to
userspace for these. Currently these driver use this construct for this:
if (acpi_video_get_backlight_type() == acpi_backlight_vendor)
report_brightness_key_event();
This indirect way of detecting if acpi-video is active does not make the
code easier to understand, and in some cases it is wrong because just
because the preferred type != vendor does not mean that acpi-video is
actually listening for brightness events, e.g. there may be no acpi-video
bus on the system at all.
This commit adds a acpi_video_handles_brightness_key_presses() helper
function, making the code needing this functionality both easier to read
and more correct.

The ACPI compiler uses the extended format when used interrupt numbers

However, due to used data structure type; the code silently truncates

Code currently supports 256 maximum interrupts at this moment. The patch is
reconfiguring the penalty array as a dynamic list to remove this
limitation.
A new penalty linklist has been added for all other interrupts greater than
16. If an IRQ is not found in the link list, an IRQ info structure will be
dynamically allocated on the first access and will be placed on the list
for further reuse. The list will grow by the number of supported interrupts
in the ACPI table rather than having a 256 hard limitation.

ACPICA commit 11522d6b894054fc4d62dd4f9863ec151296b386
The ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC is a problem now when the debugger code is compiled
but runtime disabled. They actually will get executed in this situation.
Although such executions are harmless if we can correctly make
acpi_db_single_step() a runtime stub, users may still do not want to see the
debugger print messages logged into OSPMs' kernel logs when a debugger
driver is not loaded to enable the debugger during runtime.
This patch fixes this issue by introducing new stub mechanism instead of
ACPI_DEBUGGER_EXEC. Lv Zheng.

The following mechanisms are OSPM specific:
1. Redirect output destination to console: no file redirection will be
needed by an in-kernel debugger, there is even no file can be accessed
when the debugger is running in the kernel mode.
2. Output command prompts: programs other than acpiexec can have different
prompt characters and the prompt characters may be implemented as a
special character sequence to form a char device IO protocol.
3. Command ready/complete handshake: OSPM debugger may wait more conditions
to implement OSPM specific semantics (for example, FIFO full/empty
conditions for O_NONBLOCK or IO open/close conditions).
Leaving such OSPM specific stuffs in the ACPICA debugger core blocks
Linux debugger IO driver implementation.
Several new OSL APIs are provided by this patch:
1. acpi_os_initialize_command_signals: initialize command handshake mechanism
or any other OSPM specific stuffs.
2. acpi_os_terminate_command_signals: reversal of
acpi_os_initialize_command_signals.
3. acpi_os_wait_command_ready: putting debugger task into wait state when a
command is not ready. OSPMs can terminate command loop by returning
AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wait_event() or
wait_for_multiple_object() may be used to implement this API.
4. acpi_os_notify_command_complete: putting user task into running state when a
command has been completed. OSPMs can terminate command loop by
returning AE_CTRL_TERMINATE from this API. Normally, wake_up() or
set_event() may be used to implement this API.
This patch also converts current command signaling implementation into a
generic debugger layer (osgendbg.c) to be used by the existing OSPMs or
acpiexec, in return, Linux can have chance to implement its own command
handshake mechanism. This patch also implements acpiexec batch mode in a
multi-threading mode comaptible style as a demo (this can be confirmed by
configuring acpiexec into DEBUGGER_MULTI_THREADED mode where the batch mode
is still working). Lv Zheng.
Note that the OSPM specific command handshake mechanism is required by
Linux kernel because:
1. Linux kernel trends to use wait queue to synchronize two threads, using
mutexes to achieve that will cause false "dead lock" warnings.
2. The command handshake mechanism implemented by ACPICA is implemented in
this way because of a design issue in debugger IO streaming. Debugger IO
outputs are simply cached using a giant buffer, this should be tuned by
Linux in the future.

Pull libnvdimm fixes from Dan Williams:
- NFIT parsing regression fixes from Linda. The nvdimm hot-add
implementation merged in 4.4-rc1 interpreted the specification in a
way that breaks actual HPE platforms. We are also closing the loop
with the ACPI Working Group to get this clarification added to the
spec.
- Andy pointed out that his laptop without nvdimm resources is loading
the e820-nvdimm module by default, fix that up to only load the
module when an e820-type-12 range is present.

Commit 4d6b4e69a2 ("x86/PCI/ACPI: Use common interface to support
PCI host bridge") converted x86 to use the common interface
acpi_pci_root_create, but the conversion missed on code piece in
arch/x86/pci/bus_numa.c, which causes regression on some legacy
AMD platforms as reported by Arthur Marsh <arthur.marsh@internode.on.net>.
The root causes is that acpi_pci_root_create() fails to insert
host bridge resources into iomem_resource/ioport_resource because
x86_pci_root_bus_resources() has already inserted those resources.
So change x86_pci_root_bus_resources() to not insert resources into
iomem_resource/ioport_resource.

When support for _FIT was added, the code presumed that the data
returned by the _FIT method is identical to the NFIT table, which
starts with an acpi_table_header. However, the _FIT is defined
to return a data in the format of a series of NFIT type structure
entries and as a method, has an acpi_object header rather tahn
an acpi_table_header.
To address the differences, explicitly save the acpi_table_header
from the NFIT, since it is accessible through /sys, and change
the nfit pointer in the acpi_desc structure to point to the
table entries rather than the headers.

The size of NFIT tables don't necessarily match the size of the
data structures that we use for them. For example, the NVDIMM
Control Region Structure table is shorter for a device with
no block control windows than for a device with block control windows.
Other tables, such as Flush Hint Address Structure and the Interleave
Structure are variable length by definition.
Account for the size difference when comparing table entries by
using the actual table size from the table header if it's less
than the structure size.

Some ACPI node's _STA will touch operation region field, since the
evaluation of _STA in acpi_bus_type_and_status is very early, the
operation region handler is not ready yet. Instead of fail that function
and not creating the acpi_device node consequently, set status to 0 so
that later when the driver for that device is probing, it can find
the acpi_device node and proceed normally. And at that time, the
handler for the operation region is ready and its _STA evaluation will
succeed, its present status can be checked there.
Even there will be no driver using this node later, it doesn't seem
hurt to have one more acpi_device node created with status set to 0.
This happens on Microsoft Surface 3, where the SPI device node NTRG's
_STA touches GPIO fields and the SPI core driver will only enumerate SPI
devices from ACPI if the acpi_device node is 1: created; 2: _STA
indicates it's present.
Note that due to another problem in SPI driver, for NTRG to be actually
enumerated, some changes have to be made in the SPI layer, which is
addressed by Mika(not send out yet):

In the SBS initialisation, a reentrant call to wait_event_timeout()
causes an intermittent boot stall of several minutes usually following
the "Switching to clocksource tsc" message. Another symptom of this bug
is high CPU usage from programs (Firefox, upowerd) querying the battery
state. This is caused by:
1. drivers/acpi/sbshc.c wait_transaction_complete() calls
wait_event_timeout():
if (wait_event_timeout(hc->wait, smb_check_done(hc),
msecs_to_jiffies(timeout)))
2. ___wait_event sets task state to uninterruptible
3. ___wait_event calls the "condition" smb_check_done()
4. smb_check_done (sbshc.c) calls through to ec_read() in
drivers/acpi/ec.c
5. ec_guard() is reached which calls wait_event_timeout()
if (wait_event_timeout(ec->wait,
ec_transaction_completed(ec),
guard))
ie. wait_event_timeout() is being called again inside evaluation of
the previous wait_event_timeout() condition
5. The EC IRQ handler calls wake_up() and wakes up the sleeping task in
ec_guard()
6. The task is now in state running even though the wait "condition" is
still being evaluated
7. The "condition" check returns false so ___wait_event calls
schedule_timeout()
8. Since the task state is running, the scheduler immediately schedules
it again
9. This loop usually repeats for around 250 seconds even though the
original wait_event_timeout was only 1000ms.
The timeout is incorrect because each call to schedule_timeout()
usually returns immediately, taking less than 1ms, so the jiffies
timeout counter is not decremented. The task is now stuck in a
running state, and so is highly likely to be immediately
rescheduled, which takes less than a jiffy. The loop will never exit
if all schedule_timeout() calls take less than a jiffy.
Fix this by replacing SMBus reads in the wait_event_timeout condition
with checks of a boolean value that is updated by the EC query handler.

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Quite a new features are included this time.
First off, the Collaborative Processor Performance Control interface
(version 2) defined by ACPI will now be supported on ARM64 along with
a cpufreq frontend for CPU performance scaling.
Second, ACPI gets a new infrastructure for the early probing of IRQ
chips and clock sources (along the lines of the existing similar
mechanism for DT).
Next, the ACPI core and the generic device properties API will now
support a recently introduced hierarchical properties extension of the
_DSD (Device Specific Data) ACPI device configuration object. If the
ACPI platform firmware uses that extension to organize device
properties in a hierarchical way, the kernel will automatically handle
it and make those properties available to device drivers via the
generic device properties API.
It also will be possible to build the ACPICA's AML interpreter
debugger into the kernel now and use that to diagnose AML-related
problems more efficiently. In the future, this should make it
possible to single-step AML execution and do similar things.
Interesting stuff, although somewhat experimental at this point.
Finally, the PM core gets a new mechanism that can be used by device
drivers to distinguish between suspend-to-RAM (based on platform
firmware support) and suspend-to-idle (or other variants of system
suspend the platform firmware is not involved in) and possibly
optimize their device suspend/resume handling accordingly.
In addition to that, some existing features are re-organized quite
substantially.
First, the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges on x86 and ia64 is
unified and the common code goes into the ACPI core (so as to reduce
code duplication and eliminate non-essential differences between the
two architectures in that area).
Second, the Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework is
reorganized to make the code easier to find and follow.
Next, the cpufreq core's sysfs interface is reorganized to get rid of
the "primary CPU" concept for configurations in which the same
performance scaling settings are shared between multiple CPUs.
Finally, some interfaces that aren't necessary any more are dropped
from the generic power domains framework.
On top of the above we have some minor extensions, cleanups and bug
fixes in multiple places, as usual.
Specifics:
- ACPICA update to upstream revision 20150930 (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng).

Add a .notify callback to the acpi_nfit_driver that gets called on a
hotplug event. From this, evaluate the _FIT ACPI method which returns
the updated NFIT with handles for the hot-plugged NVDIMM.
Iterate over the new NFIT, and add any new tables found, and
register/enable the corresponding regions.
In the nfit test framework, after normal initialization, update the NFIT
with a new hot-plugged NVDIMM, and directly call into the driver to
update its view of the available regions.

The firmware of ESPRIMO Mobile M9410 has two video output devices that
have _BCM control method, one is the type of "External Digital Monitor"
while the other is the type of "Internal/Integrated Digital Flat Panel".
Only the 2nd video output device's _BCM control method works, but
since we have created two and the 1st one got picked up by user space,
the backlight functionality is broken. To solve this problem, only
register backlight interface for "Internal/Integrated Digital Flat Panel"
type video output device on this laptop.
Another problem of this laptop is that the IDs listed by the _DOD method
doesn't have bit 31 set, which means it doesn't follow the format
specified by ACPI spec. But the value indicates that it actually follows
that format so I've added a DMI quirk and a module level parameter to
force use the device_id_scheme so that we can get the video output
device's type to do the decision if we should register backlight
interface.

For an ACPI compatible system, the SCI (ACPI System Control
Interrupt) is used to wake the system up from suspend-to-idle.
Once the CPU is woken up by the SCI, the interrupt handler will
first check if the current IRQ has been configured for system
wakeup, so irq_pm_check_wakeup() is invoked to validate the IRQ
number. However, during suspend-to-idle, enable_irq_wake() is
called for acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt, although the IRQ number
that the SCI handler has been installed for should be passed to
it instead. Thus, if acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt happens to be
different from that number, ACPI interrupts will not be able to
wake up the system from sleep.
Fix this problem by passing the IRQ number returned by
acpi_gsi_to_irq() to enable_irq_wake() instead of
acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt.

Currently when the system is trying to uninstall the ACPI interrupt
handler, it uses acpi_gbl_FADT.sci_interrupt as the IRQ number.
However, the IRQ number that the ACPI interrupt handled is installed
for comes from acpi_gsi_to_irq() and that is the number that should
be used for the handler removal.
Fix this problem by using the mapped IRQ returned from acpi_gsi_to_irq()
as appropriate.

When single step execution is not ended, executing another control methods
leads to dead locks around interpreter lock/namespace lock/method
serialization lock. So we should only allow one execution from the debugger
at same time. Lv Zheng.
