Tim Hockin 8a336b0a4b [PATCH] x86-64: Dynamically adjust machine check interval
Background:
 We've found that MCEs (specifically DRAM SBEs) tend to come in bunches,
 especially when we are trying really hard to stress the system out.  The
 current MCE poller uses a static interval which does not care whether it
 has or has not found MCEs recently.

Description:
 This patch makes the MCE poller adjust the polling interval dynamically.
 If we find an MCE, poll 2x faster (down to 10 ms).  When we stop finding
 MCEs, poll 2x slower (up to check_interval seconds).  The check_interval
 tunable becomes the max polling interval.  The "Machine check events
 logged" printk() is rate limited to the check_interval, which should be
 identical behavior to the old functionality.

Result:
 If you start to take a lot of correctable errors (not exceptions), you
 log them faster and more accurately (less chance of overflowing the MCA
 registers).  If you don't take a lot of errors, you will see no change.

Alternatives:
 I considered simply reducing the polling interval to 10 ms immediately
 and keeping it there as long as we continue to find errors.  This felt a
 bit heavy handed, but does perform significantly better for the default
 check_interval of 5 minutes (we're using a few seconds when testing for
 DRAM errors).  I could be convinced to go with this, if anyone felt it
 was not too aggressive.

Testing:
 I used an error-injecting DIMM to create lots of correctable DRAM errors
 and verified that the polling interval accelerates.  The printk() only
 happens once per check_interval seconds.

Patch:
 This patch is against 2.6.21-rc7.

Eric Dumazet 141a892f57 [PATCH] x86-64: move __vgetcpu_mode & __jiffies to the vsyscall_2 zone
We apparently hit the 1024 limit of vsyscall_0 zone when some debugging
options are set, or if __vsyscall_gtod_data is 64 bytes larger.

In order to save 128 bytes from the vsyscall_0 zone, we move __vgetcpu_mode
& __jiffies to vsyscall_2 zone where they really belong, since they are
used only from vgetcpu() (which is in this vsyscall_2 area).

After patch is applied, new layout is :

apic_wait_icr_idle looks like this:

The busy loop in this function would not be problematic if the
corresponding status bit in the ICR were always updated, but that does
not seem to be the case under certain crash scenarios. Kdump uses an IPI
to stop the other CPUs in the event of a crash, but when any of the
other CPUs are locked-up inside the NMI handler the CPU that sends the
IPI will end up looping forever in the ICR check, effectively
hard-locking the whole system.

Quoting from Intel's "MultiProcessor Specification" (Version 1.4), B-3:

"A local APIC unit indicates successful dispatch of an IPI by
resetting the Delivery Status bit in the Interrupt Command
Register (ICR). The operating system polls the delivery status
bit after sending an INIT or STARTUP IPI until the command has
been dispatched.

A period of 20 microseconds should be sufficient for IPI dispatch
to complete under normal operating conditions. If the IPI is not
successfully dispatched, the operating system can abort the
command. Alternatively, the operating system can retry the IPI by
writing the lower 32-bit double word of the ICR. This “time-out”
mechanism can be implemented through an external interrupt, if
interrupts are enabled on the processor, or through execution of
an instruction or time-stamp counter spin loop."

Intel's documentation suggests the implementation of a time-out
mechanism, which, by the way, is already being open-coded in some parts
of the kernel that tinker with ICR.

Create a apic_wait_icr_idle replacement that implements the time-out
mechanism and that can be used to solve the aforementioned problem.

Bernhard Kaindl 3ebad59056 [PATCH] x86: Save and restore the fixed-range MTRRs of the BSP when suspending
Note: This patch didn'nt need an update since it's initial post.

Some BIOSes may modify fixed-range MTRRs in SMM, e.g. when they
transition the system into ACPI mode, which is entered thru an SMI,
triggered by Linux in acpi_enable().

SMIs which cause that Linux is interrupted and BIOS code is
executed (which may change e.g. fixed-range MTRRs) in SMM may
be raised by an embedded system controller which is often found
in notebooks also at other occasions.

If we would not update our copy of the fixed-range MTRRs before
suspending to RAM or to disk, restore_processor_state() would
set the fixed-range MTRRs of the BSP using old backup values
which may be outdated and this could cause the system to fail
later during resume.

This patch ensures that our copy of the fixed-range MTRRs
is updated when saving the boot processor state on suspend
to disk and suspend to RAM.

In combination with other patches this allows to fix s2ram
and s2disk on the Acer Ferrari 1000 notebook and at least
s2disk on the Acer Ferrari 5000 notebook.

Bernhard Kaindl 2b1f6278d7 [PATCH] x86: Save the MTRRs of the BSP before booting an AP

AMD and Intel x86 CPU manuals state that it is the responsibility of
system software to initialize and maintain MTRR consistency across
all processors in Multi-Processing Environments.

Quote from page 188 of the AMD64 System Programming manual (Volume 2):

7.6.5 MTRRs in Multi-Processing Environments

"In multi-processing environments, the MTRRs located in all processors must
characterize memory in the same way. Generally, this means that identical
values are written to the MTRRs used by the processors." (short omission here)
"Failure to do so may result in coherency violations or loss of atomicity.
Processor implementations do not check the MTRR settings in other processors
to ensure consistency. It is the responsibility of system software to
initialize and maintain MTRR consistency across all processors."

Current Linux MTRR code already implements the above in the case that the
BIOS does not properly initialize MTRRs on the secondary processors,
but the case where the fixed-range MTRRs of the boot processor are changed
after Linux started to boot, before the initialsation of a secondary
processor, is not handled yet.

In this case, secondary processors are currently initialized by Linux
with MTRRs which the boot processor had very early, when mtrr_bp_init()
did run, but not with the MTRRs which the boot processor uses at the
time when that secondary processors is actually booted,
causing differing MTRR contents on the secondary processors.

Such situation happens on Acer Ferrari 1000 and 5000 notebooks where the
BIOS enables and sets AMD-specific IORR bits in the fixed-range MTRRs
of the boot processor when it transitions the system into ACPI mode.
The SMI handler of the BIOS does this in SMM, entered while Linux ACPI
code runs acpi_enable().

Other occasions where the SMI handler of the BIOS may change bits in
the MTRRs could occur as well. To initialize newly booted secodary
processors with the fixed-range MTRRs which the boot processor uses
at that time, this patch saves the fixed-range MTRRs of the boot
processor before new secondary processors are started. When the
secondary processors run their Linux initialisation code, their
fixed-range MTRRs will be updated with the saved fixed-range MTRRs.

If CONFIG_MTRR is not set, we define mtrr_save_state
as an empty statement because there is nothing to do.

Possible TODOs:

*) CPU-hotplugging outside of SMP suspend/resume is not yet tested
   with this patch.

*) If, even in this case, an AP never runs i386/do_boot_cpu or x86_64/cpu_up,
   then the calls to mtrr_save_state() could be replaced by calls to
   mtrr_save_fixed_ranges(NULL) and  mtrr_save_state() would not be
   needed.

   That would need either verification of the CPU-hotplug code or
   at least a test on a >2 CPU machine.

*) The MTRRs of other running processors are not yet checked at this
   time but it might be interesting to syncronize the MTTRs of all
   processors before booting. That would be an incremental patch,
   but of rather low priority since there is no machine known so
   far which would require this.

Let's allow page-alignment in general for per-cpu data (wanted by Xen, and
Ingo suggested KVM as well).

Because larger alignments can use more room, we increase the max per-cpu
memory to 64k rather than 32k: it's getting a little tight.

Andi Kleen f039b75471 [PATCH] x86: Don't use MWAIT on AMD Family 10
It doesn't put the CPU into deeper sleep states, so it's better to use the standard
idle loop to save power. But allow to reenable it anyways for benchmarking.

Konrad Rzeszutek ae32b1297a [PATCH] x86-64: Inhibit machine from asserting an NMI when doing Alt-SysRq-M operation.
This patch touches the NMI watchdog every MAX_ORDER_NR_PAGES
to inhibit the machine from triggering an NMI while the CPUs
are locked. This situation is happening on boxes with more
than 64CPUs and 128GB of RAM when Alt-SysRq-m is performed.

It has been succesfully tested for regression on uni, 2, 4, 8
32, and 64 CPU boxes with various memory configuration.

Current vsyscall_gtod_data is large (3 or 4 cache lines dirtied at timer
interrupt). We can shrink it to exactly 64 bytes (1 cache line on AMD64)

Instead of copying a whole struct clocksource, we copy only needed fields.

I deleted an unused field : offset_base

This patch fixes one oddity in vgettimeofday(): It can returns a timeval with
tv_usec = 1000000. Maybe not a bug, but why not doing the right thing ?

Christoph Lameter 2bff73830c [PATCH] x86-64: use lru instead of page->index and page->private for pgd lists management.
x86_64 currently simulates a list using the index and private fields of the
page struct.  Seems that the code was inherited from i386.  But x86_64 does
not use the slab to allocate pgds and pmds etc.  So the lru field is not
used by the slab and therefore available.

This patch uses standard list operations on page->lru to realize pgd
tracking.

On i386 and x86-64 (under CONFIG_DEBUG_RODATA), kernel text and bug table
can also be write-protected.

Compared to the first version, this one prevents re-creating deleted
mappings in the kernel image range on x86-64, if those got removed
previously. This, together with the original changes, prevents temporarily
having inconsistent mappings when cacheability attributes are being
changed on such pages (e.g. from AGP code). While on i386 such duplicate
mappings don't exist, the same change is done there, too, both for
consistency and because checking pte_present() before using various other
pte_XXX functions is a requirement anyway. At once, i386 code gets
adjusted to use pte_huge() instead of open coding this.

Bernhard Walle 8f9aeca7a0 [PATCH] x86: add command line length to boot protocol
Because the command line is increased to 2048 characters after 2.6.21, it's
not possible for boot loaders and userspace tools to determine the length
of the command line the kernel can understand.  The benefit of knowing the
length is that users can be warned if the command line size is too long
which prevents surprise if things don't work after bootup.

This patch updates the boot protocol to contain a field called
"cmdline_size" that contain the length of the command line (excluding the
terminating zero).

The patch also adds missing fields (of protocol version 2.05) to the x86_64
setup code.

David Rientjes 8b8ca80e19 [PATCH] x86-64: configurable fake numa node sizes
Extends the numa=fake x86_64 command-line option to allow for configurable
node sizes.  These nodes can be used in conjunction with cpusets for coarse
memory resource management.

The old command-line option is still supported:
  numa=fake=32	gives 32 fake NUMA nodes, ignoring the NUMA setup of the
		actual machine.

But now you may configure your system for the node sizes of your choice:
  numa=fake=2*512,1024,2*256
		gives two 512M nodes, one 1024M node, two 256M nodes, and
		the rest of system memory to a sixth node.

The existing hash function is maintained to support the various node sizes
that are possible with this implementation.

Each node of the same size receives roughly the same amount of available
pages, regardless of any reserved memory with its address range.  The total
available pages on the system is calculated and divided by the number of equal
nodes to allocate.  These nodes are then dynamically allocated and their
borders extended until such time as their number of available pages reaches
the required size.

Configurable node sizes are recommended when used in conjunction with cpusets
for memory control because it eliminates the overhead associated with scanning
the zonelists of many smaller full nodes on page_alloc().

throwing out this troublesome clocksource.

o This patch moves the code to verify long mode and SSE to a common file.
  This code is now shared by trampoline.S, wakeup.S, boot/setup.S and
  boot/compressed/head.S

o So far we used to do very limited check in trampoline.S, wakeup.S and
  in 32bit entry point. Now all the entry paths are forced to do the
  exhaustive check, including SSE because verify_cpu is shared.

o I am keeping this patch as last in the x86 relocatable series because
  previous patches have got quite some amount of testing done and don't want
  to distrub that. So that if there is problem introduced by this patch, at
  least it can be easily isolated.

o X86_64 kernel should run from 2MB aligned address for two reasons.
	- Performance.
	- For relocatable kernels, page tables are updated based on difference
	  between compile time address and load time physical address.
	  This difference should be multiple of 2MB as kernel text and data
	  is mapped using 2MB pages and PMD should be pointing to a 2MB
	  aligned address. Life is simpler if both compile time and load time
	  kernel addresses are 2MB aligned.

o Flag the error at compile time if one is trying to build a kernel which
  does not meet alignment restrictions.

Vivek Goyal 1ab60e0f72 [PATCH] x86-64: Relocatable Kernel Support
This patch modifies the x86_64 kernel so that it can be loaded and run
at any 2M aligned address, below 512G.  The technique used is to
compile the decompressor with -fPIC and modify it so the decompressor
is fully relocatable.  For the main kernel the page tables are
modified so the kernel remains at the same virtual address.  In
addition a variable phys_base is kept that holds the physical address
the kernel is loaded at.  __pa_symbol is modified to add that when
we take the address of a kernel symbol.

When loaded with a normal bootloader the decompressor will decompress
the kernel to 2M and it will run there.  This both ensures the
relocation code is always working, and makes it easier to use 2M
pages for the kernel and the cpu.

Vivek Goyal 0dbf7028c0 [PATCH] x86: __pa and __pa_symbol address space separation
Currently __pa_symbol is for use with symbols in the kernel address
map and __pa is for use with pointers into the physical memory map.
But the code is implemented so you can usually interchange the two.

__pa which is much more common can be implemented much more cheaply
if it is it doesn't have to worry about any other kernel address
spaces.  This is especially true with a relocatable kernel as
__pa_symbol needs to peform an extra variable read to resolve
the address.

There is a third macro that is added for the vsyscall data
__pa_vsymbol for finding the physical addesses of vsyscall pages.

Most of this patch is simply sorting through the references to
__pa or __pa_symbol and using the proper one.  A little of
it is continuing to use a physical address when we have it
instead of recalculating it several times.

swapper_pgd is now NULL.  leave_mm now uses init_mm.pgd
and init_mm.pgd is initialized at boot (instead of compile time)
to the physmem virtual mapping of init_level4_pgd.  The
physical address changed.

Except for the for EMPTY_ZERO page all of the remaining references
to __pa_symbol appear to be during kernel initialization.  So this
should reduce the cost of __pa in the common case, even on a relocated
kernel.

As this is technically a semantic change we need to be on the lookout
for anything I missed.  But it works for me (tm).

Vivek Goyal cfd243d4af [PATCH] x86-64: Remove the identity mapping as early as possible
With the rewrite of the SMP trampoline and the early page
allocator there is nothing that needs identity mapped pages,
once we start executing C code.

So add zap_identity_mappings into head64.c and remove
zap_low_mappings() from much later in the code.  The functions
 are subtly different thus the name change.

This also kills boot_level4_pgt which was from an earlier
attempt to move the identity mappings as early as possible,
and is now no longer needed.  Essentially I have replaced
boot_level4_pgt with trampoline_level4_pgt in trampoline.S

o Increased the size of the wakeup routine to 8K. This is required as
  wake page tables are on trampoline itself and they got to be at 4K
  boundary, hence one page is not sufficient.

	  more readable.
	- After enabling long mode, directly take a long jump for 64bit
	  mode. No need to take an extra jump to "reach_comaptibility_mode"
	- Stack is not used after real mode. So don't load stack in
 	  32 bit mode.
	- No need to enable PGE here.
	- No need to do extra EFER read, anyway we trash the read contents.
	- No need to enable system call (EFER_SCE). Anyway it will be
	  enabled when original EFER is restored.
	- No need to set MP, ET, NE, WP, AM bits in cr0. Very soon we will
  	  reload the original cr0 while restroing the processor state.

This modifies the SMP trampoline and all of the associated code so
it can jump to a 64bit kernel loaded at an arbitrary address.

The dependencies on having an idenetity mapped page in the kernel
page tables for SMP bootup have all been removed.

In addition the trampoline has been modified to verify
that long mode is supported.  Asking if long mode is implemented is
down right silly but we have traditionally had some of these checks,
and they can't hurt anything.  So when the totally ludicrous happens
we just might handle it correctly.

Move __KERNEL32_CS up into the unused gdt entry.  __KERNEL32_CS is
used when entering the kernel so putting it first is useful when
trying to keep boot gdt sizes to a minimum.

Set the accessed bit on all gdt entries.  We don't care
so there is no need for the cpu to burn the extra cycles,
and it potentially allows the pages to be immutable.  Plus
it is confusing when debugging and your gdt entries mysteriously
change.

- Merge physmem_pgt and ident_pgt, removing physmem_pgt.  The merge
  is broken as soon as mm/init.c:init_memory_mapping is run.

- Fix the physical memory identity mapping so it is at the correct
  address.
- Remove the physical memory mapping from wakeup_level4_pgt it
  is at the wrong address so we can't possibly be usinging it.
- Simply NEXT_PAGE the work to calculate the phys_ alias
  of the labels was very cool.  Unfortuantely it was a brittle
  special purpose hack that makes maitenance more difficult.
  Instead just use label - __START_KERNEL_map like we do
  everywhere else in assembly.

Vivek Goyal dafe41ee3a [PATCH] x86-64: Kill temp boot pmds
Early in the boot process we need the ability to set
up temporary mappings, before our normal mechanisms are
initialized.  Currently this is used to map pages that
are part of the page tables we are building and pages
during the dmi scan.

The core problem is that we are using the user portion of
the page tables to implement this.  Which means that while
this mechanism is active we cannot catch NULL pointer dereferences
and we deviate from the normal ways of handling things.

In this patch I modify early_ioremap to map pages into
the kernel portion of address space, roughly where
we will later put modules, and I make the discovery of
which addresses we can use dynamic which removes all
kinds of static limits and remove the dependencies
on implementation details between different parts of the code.

Now alloc_low_page() and unmap_low_page() use
early_iomap() and early_iounmap() to allocate/map and
unmap a page.

Hello,

This patch against 2.6.20-git14 makes the NMI watchdog use PERFSEL1/PERFCTR1
instead of PERFSEL0/PERFCTR0 on processors supporting Intel architectural
perfmon, such as Intel Core 2. Although all PMU events can work on
both counters, the Precise Event-Based Sampling (PEBS) requires that the
event be in PERFCTR0 to work correctly (see section 18.14.4.1 in the
IA32 SDM Vol 3b). This versions has 3 chunks compared to previous where
we had missed on check.

Changelog:
        - make the x86-64 NMI watchdog use PERFSEL1/PERFCTR1 instead of PERFSEL0/PERFCTR0
          on processors supporting the Intel architectural perfmon (e.g. Core 2 Duo).
          This allows PEBS to work when the NMI watchdog is active.

Andi Kleen d189518342 [PATCH] x86: Fix i386 and x86_64 fault information pollution
a userspace fault or a kernelspace fault which will result in the
immediate death of the process.  They should not be filled in as a
result of a kernelspace fault which can be fixed up.

Otherwise, if the process is handling SIGSEGV and examining the fault
information, this can result in the kernel space fault trashing the
previously stored fault information if it arrives between the
userspace fault happening and the SIGSEGV being delivered to the process.

Synchronize i386's smp_send_stop() with x86-64's in only try-locking
the call lock to prevent deadlocks when called from panic().
In both version, disable interrupts before clearing the CPU off the
online map to eliminate races with IRQ handlers inspecting this map.
Also in both versions, save/restore interrupts rather than disabling/
enabling them.
On x86-64, eliminate one function used here by folding it into its
single caller, convert to static, and rename for consistency with i386
(lkcd may like this).

Ingo Molnar 07c7c47444 [PATCH] x86-64: always use physical delivery mode on > 8 CPUs
Remove clustered APIC mode.  There's little point in the use of clustered APIC
mode, broadcasting is limited to within the cluster only, and chipsets have
bugs in this area as well.  So default to physical APIC mode when the CPU
count is large, and default to logical APIC mode when the CPU count is 8 or
smaller.

(this patch only removes the use of genapic_cluster and cleans up the
resulting genapic.c file - removal of all remaining traces of clustered
mode will be done by another patch.)

Ingo Molnar f18d397e6a [PATCH] x86-64: optimize & fix APIC mode setup
Fix a couple of inconsistencies/problems I found while reviewing the x86_64
genapic code (when I was chasing mysterious eth0 timeouts that would only
trigger if CPU_HOTPLUG is enabled):

 - AMD systems defaulted to the slower flat-physical mode instead
   of the flat-logical mode. The only restriction on AMD systems
   is that they should not use clustered APIC mode.

 - removed the CPU hotplug hacks, switching the default for small
   systems back from phys-flat to logical-flat. The switching to logical
   flat mode on small systems fixed sporadic ethernet driver timeouts i
   was getting on a dual-core Athlon64 system:

    NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
    eth0: Transmit timeout, status 0c 0005 c07f media 80.
    eth0: Tx queue start entry 32  dirty entry 28.
    eth0:  Tx descriptor 0 is 0008a04a. (queue head)

    eth0:  Tx descriptor 3 is 0008a04a.
    eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0xC5E1

 - The use of '<= 8' was a bug by itself (the valid APIC ids
   for logical flat mode go from 0 to 7, not 0 to 8). The new logic
   is to use logical flat mode on both AMD and Intel systems, and
   to only switch to physical mode when logical mode cannot be used.
   If CPU hotplug is racy wrt. APIC shutdown then CPU hotplug needs
   fixing, not the whole IRQ system be made inconsistent and slowed
   down.

 - minor cleanups: simplified some code constructs

build & booted on a couple of AMD and Intel SMP systems.

Jeff Garzik 8cdfb29c0c libata/IDE: remove combined mode quirk
Both old-IDE and libata should be able handle all controllers and
devices found using normal resource reservation methods.

This eliminates the awful, low-performing split-driver configuration
where old-IDE drove the PATA portion of a PCI device, in PIO-only mode,
and libata drove the SATA portion of the /same/ PCI device, in DMA mode.
Typically vendors would ship SATA hard drive / PATA optical
configuration, which would lend itself to slow (PIO-only) CD-ROM
performance.

For Intel users running in combined mode, it is now wholly dependent on
your driver choice (potentially link order, if you compile both drivers
in) whether old-IDE or libata will drive your hardware.

In either case, you will get full performance from both SATA and PATA
ports now, without having to pass a kernel command line parameter.

Andi Kleen 90767bd13f [PATCH] x86-64: Always flush all pages in change_page_attr
change_page_attr on x86-64 only flushed the TLB for pages that got
reverted. That's not correct: it has to be flushed in all cases.

This bug was added in some earlier changes.

Just flush all pages for now.

This could be done more efficiently, but for this late in the release
this seem to be the best fix.

GART iommu where 4kB of data where incorrect (seen mostly on Nvidia CK804
systems).  This fix, to mark the memory regin the GART PTEs reside on as

Due to an over aggressive optimizer gcc 4.2 cannot optimize away _proxy_pda
in all cases (counter intuitive, but true).  This breaks loading of some
modules.

The earlier workaround to just export a dummy symbol didn't work unfortunately
because the module code ignores exports with 0 value.

Make it 1 instead.

Rafael J. Wysocki 436ce71638 [PATCH] Revert "swsusp: disable nonboot CPUs before entering platform suspend"
This reverts commit 94985134b7 and
insteads removes the WARN_ON() that caused that commit in the first
place.

The problem is that we call disable_nonboot_cpus() in swsusp before
powering down the system in order to avoid triggering the WARN_ON()
in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:init_low_mapping() and this doesn't
work well on Thomas' system.

So instead, remove the WARN_ON() in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:
init_low_mapping(), which triggers every time during the suspend to disk
in the platform mode, as the potential problem it is related to doesn't
seem to occur in practice.

[ I think we might want to disallow the case of multiple users of that
  mm, or something.  Normally, playing with the current process page
  tables on the current CPU should be fine as long as we don't have
  other threads using those tables at the same time..

  Anyway, not pretty, but better than the warning or the lockup - Linus ]

Thomas Gleixner f33bc55c47 [PATCH] x86_64: avoid sending LOCAL_TIMER_VECTOR IPI to itself
Ray Lee reported, that on an UP kernel with "noapic" command line option
set, the box locks hard during boot.

Adding some debug printks revealed, that the last action on the box
before stalling was "Send IPI" - a debug printk which was put into
smp_send_timer_broadcast_ipi().

It seems that send_IPI_mask(mask, LOCAL_TIMER_VECTOR) fails when
"noapic" is set on the command line on an UP kernel.

Aside of that it does not make much sense to trigger an interrupt
instead of calling the function directly on the CPU which gets the
PIT/HPET interrupt in case of broadcasting.

There remains a few section mismatch warnigns for x86_64 for areas where I did
not feel confident.

Len Brown fe69933652 [PATCH] ACPI: repair nvidia early quirk breakage on x86_64
x86_64 nvidia_bugs() broke when we bailed out on not finding the HPET.
However, the quirk works by checking for _not_ finding the HPET...

Delete the nvidia_hpet_detected flag and simply test for
not finding the HPET, which is simple to do now that
acpi_table_parse returns 1 on failure.

Paolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso 47c51dff4a [PATCH] x86_64: fix 2.6.18 regression - PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS should be accepted
Also PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS should be accepted, as done by kernel/ptrace.c
and forced by binary compatibility.  UML/32bit breaks because of this -
since it is wise enough to use PTRACE_OLDSETOPTIONS to be binary compatible
with 2.4 host kernels.

Until 2.6.17 (commit f0f2d6536e) we had:

       default:
                return sys_ptrace(request, pid, addr, data);

Instead here we have:
        case PTRACE_GET_THREAD_AREA:
	case ...:
                return sys_ptrace(request, pid, addr, data);

        default:
                return -EINVAL;

This change was a style change - when a case is added, it must be
explicitly tested this way.  In this case, not enough testing was done.

Ingo Molnar d04f41e353 [PATCH] CPU hotplug: call check_tsc_sync_source() with irqs off
check_tsc_sync_source() depends on being called with irqs disabled (it
checks whether the TSC is coherent across two specific CPUs). This is
incidentally true during bootup, but not during cpu hotplug __cpu_up().
This got found via smp_processor_id() debugging.

disable irqs explicitly and remove the unconditional enabling of
interrupts. Add touch_nmi_watchdog() to the cpu_online_map busy loop.

this bug is present both on i386 and on x86_64.

john stultz 6bb74df481 [PATCH] clocksource init adjustments (fix bug #7426)
This patch resolves the issue found here:

The basic summary is:
Currently we register most of i386/x86_64 clocksources at module_init
time. Then we enable clocksource selection at late_initcall time. This
causes some problems for drivers that use gettimeofday for init
calibration routines (specifically the es1968 driver in this case),
where durring module_init, the only clocksource available is the low-res
jiffies clocksource. This may cause slight calibration errors, due to
the small sampling time used.

It should be noted that drivers that require fine grained time may not
function on architectures that do not have better then jiffies
resolution timekeeping (there are a few). However, this does not
discount the reasonable need for such fine-grained timekeeping at init
time.

Thus the solution here is to register clocksources earlier (ideally when
the hardware is being initialized), and then we enable clocksource
selection at fs_initcall (before device_initcall).

This patch should probably get some testing time in -mm, since
clocksource selection is one of the most important issues for correct
timekeeping, and I've only been able to test this on a few of my own
boxes.

Eric W. Biederman 2ff7354fe8 [PATCH] x86_64/i386 irq: Fix !CONFIG_SMP compilation
When removing set_native_irq I missed the fact that it was
called in a couple of places that were compiled even when
SMP support is disabled.  And since the irq_desc[].affinity
field only exists in SMP things broke.

Thanks to Simon Arlott <simon@arlott.org> for spotting this.

There are a couple of ways to fix this but the simplest one
is to just remove the assignments.  The affinity field is only
used to display a value to the user, and nothing on either i386
or x86_64 reads it or depends on it being any particlua value,
so skipping the assignment is safe.  The assignment that
is being removed is just for the initial affinity value before
the user explicitly sets it.  The irq_desc array initializes
this field to CPU_MASK_ALL so the field is initialized to
a reasonable value in the SMP case without being set.

Eric W. Biederman 610142927b [PATCH] x86_64 irq: Safely cleanup an irq after moving it.
The problem:  After moving an interrupt when is it safe to teardown
the data structures for receiving the interrupt at the old location?

With a normal pci device it is possible to issue a read to a device
to flush all posted writes.  This does not work for the oldest ioapics
because they are on a 3-wire apic bus which is a completely different
data path.  For some more modern ioapics when everything is using
front side bus delivery you can flush interrupts by simply issuing a
read to the ioapic.  For other modern ioapics emperical testing has
shown that this does not work.

So it appears the only reliable way to know the last of the irqs from an
ioapic have been received from before the ioapic was reprogrammed is to
received the first irq from the ioapic from after it was reprogrammed.

Once we know the last irq message has been received from an ioapic
into a local apic we then need to know that irq message has been
processed through the local apics.

retrieved just as easily by examining irq_cfg, and modifies the
callers to retrive those values from irq_cfg when they need them.

Eric W. Biederman a8c8a36736 [PATCH] x86_64 irq: Refactor setup_IO_APIC_irq
Currently we have two routines that do practically the same thing
setup_IO_APIC_irq and io_apic_set_pci_routing.  This patch makes
setup_IO_APIC_irq the common factor of these two previous routines.
For setup_IO_APIC_irq all that was needed was to pass the trigger
and polarity to make the code a proper subset of io_apic_set_pci_routing.

Hopefully consolidating these two routines will improve maintenance
there were several differences that simply appear to be one routine
or the other getting it wrong.

Alexey Dobriyan b077ffb3b7 rdmsr_on_cpu, wrmsr_on_cpu
There was OpenVZ specific bug rendering some cpufreq drivers unusable on SMP.
In short, when cpufreq code thinks it confined itself to needed cpu by means
of set_cpus_allowed() to execute rdmsr, some "virtual cpu" feature can migrate
process to anywhere.  This triggers bugons and does wrong things in general.

This got fixed by introducing rdmsr_on_cpu and wrmsr_on_cpu executing rdmsr
and wrmsr on given physical cpu by means of smp_call_function_single().

Dave Jones mentioned cpufreq might be not only user of rdmsr_on_cpu() and
wrmsr_on_cpu(), so I'm putting them into arch/{i386,x86_64}/lib/ .

Ingo Molnar 76d2160147 [PATCH] genirq: do not mask interrupts by default
Never mask interrupts immediately upon request.  Disabling interrupts in
high-performance codepaths is rare, and on the other hand this change could
recover lost edges (or even other types of lost interrupts) by conservatively
only masking interrupts after they happen.  (NOTE: with this change the
highlevel irq-disable code still soft-disables this IRQ line - and if such an
interrupt happens then the IRQ flow handler keeps the IRQ masked.)

Mark i8529A controllers as 'never loses an edge'.

Ingo Molnar 95492e4646 [PATCH] x86: rewrite SMP TSC sync code
make the TSC synchronization code more robust, and unify it between x86_64 and
i386.

The biggest change is the removal of the 'fix up TSCs' code on x86_64 and
i386, in some rare cases it was /causing/ time-warps on SMP systems.

The new code only checks for TSC asynchronity - and if it can prove a
time-warp (if it can observe the TSC going backwards when going from one CPU
to another within a critical section), then the TSC clock-source is turned
off.

The TSC synchronization-checking code also got moved into a separate file.

Eric W. Biederman 0b4d414714 [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctl
The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered
sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name.  Which is
pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented.

I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of
register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register
duplicate sysctl entries.

So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in
the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future
enhancments harder.

Occasionally the kernel has bugs that result in no irq being found for a
given cpu vector.  If we acknowledge the irq the system has a good chance
of continuing even though we dropped an irq message.  If we continue to
simply print a message and not acknowledge the irq the system is likely to
become non-responsive shortly there after.

Roland Dreier 3e94fb8f54 [PATCH] x86-64: avoid warning message livelock
I've seen my box paralyzed by an endless spew of

    rtc: lost some interrupts at 1024Hz.

messages on the serial console.  What seems to be happening is that
something real causes an interrupt to be lost and triggers the
message.  But then printing the message to the serial console (from
the hpet interrupt handler) takes more than 1/1024th of a second, and
then some more interrupts are lost, so the message triggers again....

Fix this by adding a printk_ratelimit() before printing the warning.

Benjamin Romer ee4eff6ff6 [PATCH] x86-64: update IO-APIC dest field to 8-bit for xAPIC
On the Unisys ES7000/ONE system, we encountered a problem where performing
a kexec reboot or dump on any cell other than cell 0 causes the system
timer to stop working, resulting in a hang during timer calibration in the
new kernel.

We traced the problem to one line of code in disable_IO_APIC(), which needs
to restore the timer's IO-APIC configuration before rebooting.  The code is
currently using the 4-bit physical destination field, rather than using the
8-bit logical destination field, and it cuts off the upper 4 bits of the
timer's APIC ID.  If we change this to use the logical destination field,
the timer works and we can kexec on the upper cells.  This was tested on
two different cells (0 and 2) in an ES7000/ONE system.

specifically on page 334.

It's a hard hang that not even an NMI could punch through!  Frustratingly,
adding printks or function tracing to the ACPI code made the hangs go away
...

After some time an additional detail emerged: disabling the NMI watchdog
made these occasional hangs go away.

So i spent the better part of today trying to debug this and trying out
various theories when i finally found the likely reason for the hang: if
acpi_ns_initialize_devices() executes an _INI AML method and an NMI
happens to hit that AML execution in the wrong moment, the machine would
hang.  (my theory is that this must be some sort of chipset setup method
doing stores to chipset mmio registers?)

Unfortunately given the characteristics of the hang it was sheer
impossible to figure out which of the numerous AML methods is impacted
by this problem.

As a workaround i wrote an interface to disable chipset-based NMIs while
executing _INI sections - and indeed this fixed the hang.  I did a
boot-loop of 100 separate reboots and none hung - while without the patch
it would hang every 5-10 attempts.  Out of caution i did not touch the
nmi_watchdog=2 case (it's not related to the chipset anyway and didnt
hang).

I implemented this for both x86_64 and i686, tested the i686 laptop both
with nmi_watchdog=1 [which triggered the hangs] and nmi_watchdog=2, and
tested an Athlon64 box with the 64-bit kernel as well. Everything builds
and works with the patch applied.

Zachary Amsden ffb6017563 [PATCH] x86-64: x86_64 - Fix FS/GS registers for VT execution
Initialize FS and GS to __KERNEL_DS as well.  The actual value of them is not
important, but it is important to reload them in protected mode.  At this time,
they still retain the real mode values from initial boot.  VT disallows
execution of code under such conditions, which means hardware virtualization
can not be used to boot the kernel on Intel platforms, making the boot time
painfully slow.

This requires moving the GS load before the load of GS_BASE, so just move
all the segments loads there to keep them together in the code.

Andi Kleen a98f0dd34d [PATCH] x86-64: Allow to run a program when a machine check event is detected
When a machine check event is detected (including a AMD RevF threshold
overflow event) allow to run a "trigger" program. This allows user space
to react to such events sooner.

The trigger is configured using a new trigger entry in the
machinecheck sysfs interface. It is currently shared between
all CPUs.

I also fixed the AMD threshold handler to run the machine
check polling code immediately to actually log any events
that might have caused the threshold interrupt.

Also added some documentation for the mce sysfs interface.

while debugging an unrelated problem in Xen, I noticed odd reads from
non-existent MSRs. Having now found time to look why these happen, I
came up with below patch, which
- prevents accessing MCi_MISCj with j > 0 when the block pointer in
MCi_MISC0 is zero
- accesses only contiguous MCi_MISCj until a non-implemented one is
found
- doesn't touch unimplemented blocks in mce_threshold_interrupt at all
- gives names to two bits previously derived from MASK_VALID_HI (it
took me some time to understand the code without this)

The first three items, besides being apparently closer to the spec, should
namely help cutting down on the time mce_threshold_interrupt() takes.

Venkatesh Pallipadi 1676193937 [PATCH] x86-64: Handle 32 bit PerfMon Counter writes cleanly in x86_64 nmi_watchdog
P6 CPUs and Core/Core 2 CPUs which has 'architectural perf mon' feature,
only supports write of low 32 bits in Performance Monitoring Counters.
Bits 32..39 are sign extended based on bit 31 and bits 40..63 are reserved
and should be zero.

This patch:

Change x86_64 nmi handler to handle this case cleanly.

Rohit Seth 53fee04f31 [PATCH] x86-64: Fix fake numa for x86_64 machines with big IO hole
This patch resolves the issue of running with numa=fake=X on kernel command
line on x86_64 machines that have big IO hole.  While calculating the size
of each node now we look at the total hole size in that range.

Previously there were nodes that only had IO holes in them causing kernel
boot problems.  We now use the NODE_MIN_SIZE (64MB) as the minimum size of
memory that any node must have.  We reduce the number of allocated nodes if
the number of nodes specified on kernel command line results in any node
getting memory smaller than NODE_MIN_SIZE.

This change allows the extra memory to be incremented in NODE_MIN_SIZE
granule and uniformly distribute among as many nodes (called big nodes) as
possible.

Current mmconfig has some problems of remapped range.

a) In the case of broken MCFG tables on Asus etc., we need to remap 256M
   range, but currently only remap 1M.

b) The base address always corresponds to bus number 0, but currently we
   are assuming it corresponds to start bus number.

This patch fixes the above problems.

(akpm: Arjan suggests that if the MCFG table is broken we just shouldn't use
it, rather than try to work around things).

- Removed an extraneous debug message from allocate_cachealigned_map

- Changed extract_lsb_from_nodes to return 63 for the case where there was
  only one memory node.  The prevents the creation of the dynamic hashmap.

- Changed extract_lsb_from_nodes to use only the starting memory address of
  a node.  On an ES7000, our nodes overlap the starting and ending address,
  meaning, that we see nodes like

	00000 - 10000
	10000 - 20000

  But other systems have nodes whose start and end addresses do not overlap.
   For example:

	00000 - 0FFFF
	10000 - 1FFFF

  In this case, using the ending address will result in an LSB much lower
  than what is possible.  In this case an LSB of 1 when in reality it should
  be 16.

Amul Shah 076422d2af [PATCH] x86-64: Allocate the NUMA hash function nodemap dynamically
Remove the statically allocated memory to NUMA node hash map in favor of a
dynamically allocated memory to node hash map (it is cache aligned).

This patch has the nice side effect in that it allows the hash map to grow
for systems with large amounts of memory (256GB - 1TB), but suffer from
having small PCI space tacked onto the boot node (which is somewhere
between 192MB to 512MB on the ES7000).

Andi Kleen 0812a579c9 [PATCH] x86-64: Add __copy_from_user_nocache
This does user copies in fs write() into the page cache with write combining.
This pushes the destination out of the CPU's cache, but allows higher bandwidth
in some case.

The theory is that the page cache data is usually not touched by the
CPU again and it's better to not pollute the cache with it. Also it is a little
faster.

Kyle McMartin d4d23add3a [PATCH] Common compat_sys_sysinfo
I noticed that almost all architectures implemented exactly the same
sys32_sysinfo...  except parisc, where a bug was to be found in handling of
the uptime.  So let's remove a whole whack of code for fun and profit.
Cribbed compat_sys_sysinfo from x86_64's implementation, since I figured it
would be the best tested.

This patch incorporates Arnd's suggestion of not using set_fs/get_fs, but
instead extracting out the common code from sys_sysinfo.

Christoph Lameter 5ac6da669e [PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMA
As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA
channel management.  Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to
provide memory below 16M.  So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is
set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA.  Undo the modifications to
mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set
theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig.

Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be
switched off.  It can only be switched off if we know that all devices
supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of
memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and
IA64/Altix).

In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish
a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only
capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an
alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory
(like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that
call.  In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified
to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA.

Eric W. Biederman f7feaca77d msi: Make MSI useable more architectures
The arch hooks arch_setup_msi_irq and arch_teardown_msi_irq are now
responsible for allocating and freeing the linux irq in addition to
setting up the the linux irq to work with the interrupt.

arch_setup_msi_irq now takes a pci_device and a msi_desc and returns
an irq.

With this change in place this code should be useable by all platforms
except those that won't let the OS touch the hardware like ppc RTAS.

Roland McGrath e03f0ca116 [PATCH] x86_64 ia32 vDSO: use VM_ALWAYSDUMP
This patch fixes ia32 core dumps on x86_64 to include just one phdr for the
vDSO vma.  Currently it writes a confused format with two phdrs for the
address, one without contents and one with.  This patch removes the
special-case core writing macros for the ia32 vDSO.  Instead, it uses
VM_ALWAYSDUMP in the vma.  This changes core dumps so they no longer include
the non-PT_LOAD phdrs from the vDSO, consistent with fixed native i386 core
dumps.

Venkatesh Pallipadi 58d9ce7d75 [PATCH] Revert nmi_known_cpu() check during boot option parsing
Commit f2802e7f57 and its x86 version
(b7471c6da9) adds nmi_known_cpu() check
while parsing boot options in x86_64 and i386.

With that, "nmi_watchdog=2" stops working for me on Intel Core 2 CPU
based system.

The problem is, setup_nmi_watchdog is called while parsing the boot
option and identify_cpu is not done yet.  So, the return value of
nmi_known_cpu() is not valid at this point.

So revert that check.  This should not have any adverse effect as the
nmi_known_cpu() check is done again later in enable_lapic_nmi_watchdog().

Jack Steiner ed5316d445 [PATCH] x86-64: - Ignore long SMI interrupts in clock calibration
Ensure that no SMI interrupts occur between the read of the HPET & TSC
in the clock calibration loop.

I noticed that a 2.66GHz system incorrectly detected the processor
clock speed about 1/7 of the time:

	time.c: Detected 2660.005 MHz processor.	(most of the time)
	time.c: Detected 2988.203 MHz processor.	(sometime)

The problem is caused by an SMI interrupt occuring in hpet_calibrate_tsc()
between the read of the HPET & TSC. Prior to switching the BIOS into
ACPI mode, it appears that every 27msec an SMI interrupt occurs. The
SMI interrupt takes 4.8 msec to process.

Note: On my test system, TICK_MIN had to be >380. I picked 5000
to minimize risk of having a value that is too small for other
platforms.

Linus Torvalds fea5f1e196 Revert "[PATCH] x86-64: Try multiple timer variants in check_timer"
This reverts commit b026872601, which has
been linked to several problem reports with IO-APIC and the timer.
Machines either don't boot because the timer doesn't happen, or we get
double timer interrupts because we end up double-routing the timer irq
through multiple interfaces.

Ingo Molnar 0888f06ac9 [PATCH] sched: fix bad missed wakeups in the i386, x86_64, ia64, ACPI and APM idle code
Fernando Lopez-Lezcano reported frequent scheduling latencies and audio
xruns starting at the 2.6.18-rt kernel, and those problems persisted all
until current -rt kernels. The latencies were serious and unjustified by
system load, often in the milliseconds range.

After a patient and heroic multi-month effort of Fernando, where he
tested dozens of kernels, tried various configs, boot options,
test-patches of mine and provided latency traces of those incidents, the

what is visible in this trace is that CPU#1 ran try_to_wake_up() for
PID:5856, it placed PID:5856 on CPU#0's runqueue and ran resched_task()
for CPU#0. But it decided to not send an IPI that no CPU - due to
TS_POLLING. But CPU#0 never woke up after its NEED_RESCHED bit was set,
and only rescheduled to PID:5856 upon the next lapic timer IRQ. The
result was a 600+ usecs latency and a missed wakeup!

the bug turned out to be an idle-wakeup bug introduced into the mainline
kernel this summer via an optimization in the x86_64 tree:

    During some profiling I noticed that default_idle causes a lot of
    memory traffic. I think that is caused by the atomic operations
    to clear/set the polling flag in thread_info. There is actually
    no reason to make this atomic - only the idle thread does it
    to itself, other CPUs only read it. So I moved it into ti->status.

the problem is this type of change:

this changes clear_thread_flag() to an explicit clearing of TS_POLLING.
clear_thread_flag() is defined as:

and clear_bit() is a LOCK-ed atomic instruction on all x86 platforms:

hence smp_mb__after_clear_bit() is defined as a simple compile barrier:

but the explicit TS_POLLING clearing introduced by the patch:

is not an atomic op! So the clearing of the TS_POLLING bit is freely
reorderable with the reading of the NEED_RESCHED bit - and both now
reside in different memory addresses.

CPU idle wakeup very much depends on ordered memory ops, the clearing of
the TS_POLLING flag must always be done before we test need_resched()
and hit the idle instruction(s). [Symmetrically, the wakeup code needs
to set NEED_RESCHED before it tests the TS_POLLING flag, so memory
ordering is paramount.]

Fernando's dual-core Athlon64 system has a sufficiently advanced memory
ordering model so that it triggered this scenario very often.

( And it also turned out that the reason why these latencies never
  triggered on my testsystems is that i routinely use idle=poll, which
  was the only idle variant not affected by this bug. )

The fix is to change the smp_mb__after_clear_bit() to an smp_mb(), to
act as an absolute barrier between the TS_POLLING write and the
NEED_RESCHED read. This affects almost all idling methods (default,
ACPI, APM), on all 3 x86 architectures: i386, x86_64, ia64.

Ingo Molnar 136f1e7a8c [PATCH] x86_64: fix boot time hang in detect_calgary()
if CONFIG_CALGARY_IOMMU is built into the kernel via
CONFIG_CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT, or is enabled via the
iommu=calgary boot option, then the detect_calgary() function runs to
detect the presence of a Calgary IOMMU.

detect_calgary() first searches the BIOS EBDA area for a "rio_table_hdr"
BIOS table. It has this parsing algorithm for the EBDA:

	while (offset) {

		/* The next offset is stored in the 1st word. 0 means no more */
 		offset = *((unsigned short *)(ptr + offset));
	}

got that? Lets repeat it slowly: we've got a BIOS-supplied data
structure, plus Linux kernel code that will only break out of an
infinite parsing loop once the BIOS gives a zero offset. Ok?

Translation: what an excellent opportunity for BIOS writers to lock up
the Linux boot process in an utterly hard to debug place! Indeed the
BIOS jumped on that opportunity on my box, which has the following EBDA
chaining layout:

  384, 65282, 65535, 65535, 65535, 65535, 65535, 65535 ...

see the pattern? So my, definitely non-Calgary system happily locks up
in detect_calgary()!

the patch below fixes the boot hang by trusting the BIOS-supplied data
structure a bit less: the parser always has to make forward progress,
and if it doesnt, we break out of the loop and i get the expected kernel
message:

  Calgary: Unable to locate Rio Grande Table in EBDA - bailing!

one of my boxes didnt boot the 2.6.20-rc1-rt0 kernel rpm, it hung during
early bootup. After an hour or two of happy debugging i narrowed it down
to the CALGARY_IOMMU_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT option, which was freshly added
to 2.6.20 via the x86_64 tree and /enabled by default/.

commit bff6547bb6 claims:

    [PATCH] Calgary: allow compiling Calgary in but not using it by default

    This patch makes it possible to compile Calgary in but not use it by
    default. In this mode, use 'iommu=calgary' to activate it.

but the change does not actually practice it:

disabling this option makes my box boot again. The patch below fixes the

Linus Torvalds d1526e2cda Remove stack unwinder for now
It has caused more problems than it ever really solved, and is
apparently not getting cleaned up and fixed.  We can put it back when
it's stable and isn't likely to make warning or bug events worse.

In the meantime, enable frame pointers for more readable stack traces.

The new PDA code uses a dummy _proxy_pda variable to describe
memory references to the PDA. It is never referenced
in inline assembly, but exists as input/output arguments.
gcc 4.2 in some cases can CSE references to this which causes
unresolved symbols.  Define it to zero to avoid this.

Ravikiran G Thirumalai 92715e282b [PATCH] x86: Fix boot hang due to nmi watchdog init code
2.6.19  stopped booting (or booted based on build/config) on our x86_64
systems due to a bug introduced in 2.6.19.  check_nmi_watchdog schedules an
IPI on all cpus to  busy wait on a flag, but fails to set the busywait
flag if NMI functionality is disabled.  This causes the secondary cpus
to spin in an endless loop, causing the kernel bootup to hang.
Depending upon the build, the  busywait flag got overwritten (stack variable)
and caused  the kernel to bootup on certain builds.  Following patch fixes
the bug by setting the busywait flag before returning from check_nmi_watchdog.
I guess using a stack variable is not good here as the calling function could
potentially return while the busy wait loop is still spinning on the flag.

AK: I redid the patch significantly to be cleaner

David Howells f0d1b0b30d [PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernel
This facility provides three entry points:

	ilog2()		Log base 2 of unsigned long
	ilog2_u32()	Log base 2 of u32
	ilog2_u64()	Log base 2 of u64

These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data:

	int do_something(long q)
	{
		...;
		y = ilog2(x)
		...;
	}

Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values:

	unsigned n = ilog2(27);

When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error:
initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of
something not reducible to a constant.  They treat negative numbers as
unsigned.

When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits
them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on
x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available.

This makes x86-64 use the generic BUG machinery.

The main advantage in using the generic BUG machinery for x86-64 is that
the inlined overhead of BUG is just the ud2a instruction; the file+line
information are no longer inlined into the instruction stream.  This
reduces cache pollution.

Magnus Damm 85916f8166 [PATCH] Kexec / Kdump: Unify elf note code
The elf note saving code is currently duplicated over several
architectures.  This cleanup patch simply adds code to a common file and
then replaces the arch-specific code with calls to the newly added code.

The only drawback with this approach is that s390 doesn't fully support
kexec-on-panic which for that arch leads to introduction of unused code.

Ingo Molnar 0231606785 [PATCH] hotplug CPU: clean up hotcpu_notifier() use
There was lots of #ifdef noise in the kernel due to hotcpu_notifier(fn,
prio) not correctly marking 'fn' as used in the !HOTPLUG_CPU case, and thus
generating compiler warnings of unused symbols, hence forcing people to add
#ifdefs.

the compiler can skip truly unused functions just fine:

Masami Hiramatsu b4c6c34a53 [PATCH] kprobes: enable booster on the preemptible kernel
When we are unregistering a kprobe-booster, we can't release its
instruction buffer immediately on the preemptive kernel, because some
processes might be preempted on the buffer.  The freeze_processes() and
thaw_processes() functions can clean most of processes up from the buffer.
There are still some non-frozen threads who have the PF_NOFREEZE flag.  If
those threads are sleeping (not preempted) at the known place outside the
buffer, we can ensure safety of freeing.

However, the processing of this check routine takes a long time.  So, this
patch introduces the garbage collection mechanism of insn_slot.  It also
introduces the "dirty" flag to free_insn_slot because of efficiency.

The "clean" instruction slots (dirty flag is cleared) are released
immediately.  But the "dirty" slots which are used by boosted kprobes, are
marked as garbages.  collect_garbage_slots() will be invoked to release
"dirty" slots if there are more than INSNS_PER_PAGE garbage slots or if
there are no unused slots.

Yinghai Lu ad892f5e0d [PATCH] x86-64: check vector in setup_ioapic_dest to verify if need setup_IO_APIC_irq
setup_IO_APIC_irqs could fail to get vector for some device when you have too
many devices, because at that time only boot cpu is online.  So check vector
for irq in setup_ioapic_dest and call setup_IO_APIC_irq to make sure IO-APIC
irq-routing table is initialized.

Also seperate setup_IO_APIC_irq from setup_IO_APIC_irqs.

Venkatesh Pallipadi d331e739f5 [PATCH] x86-64: Fix interrupt race in idle callback (3rd try)
Idle callbacks has some races when enter_idle() sets isidle and subsequent
interrupts that can happen on that CPU, before CPU goes to idle. Due to this,
an IDLE_END can get called before IDLE_START. To avoid these races, disable
interrupts before enter_idle and make sure that all idle routines do not
enable interrupts before entering idle.

Note that poll_idle() still has a this race as it has to enable interrupts
before going to idle. But, all other idle routines have the race fixed.

We're already well protected against module unloads because module
unload uses stop_machine(). The only exception is NMIs, but other
users already risk lockless accesses here.

This avoids some hackery in lockdep and also a potential deadlock

This matches what i386 does.

Arjan van de Ven f3d73707a1 [PATCH] x86-64: Mark rdtsc as sync only for netburst, not for core2
On the Core2 cpus, the rdtsc instruction is not serializing (as defined
in the architecture reference since rdtsc exists) and due to the deep
speculation of these cores, it's possible that you can observe time go
backwards between cores due to this speculation. Since the kernel
already deals with this with the SYNC_RDTSC flag, the solution is
simple, only assume that the instruction is serializing on family 15...

The price one pays for this is a slightly slower gettimeofday (by a
dozen or two cycles), but that increase is quite small to pay for a
really-going-forward tsc counter.
