Johannes Berg 6e3e939f3b net: add wireless TX status socket option
The 802.1X EAPOL handshake hostapd does requires
knowing whether the frame was ack'ed by the peer.
Currently, we fudge this pretty badly by not even
transmitting the frame as a normal data frame but
injecting it with radiotap and getting the status
out of radiotap monitor as well. This is rather
complex, confuses users (mon.wlan0 presence) and
doesn't work with all hardware.

To get rid of that hack, introduce a real wifi TX
status option for data frame transmissions.

This works similar to the existing TX timestamping
in that it reflects the SKB back to the socket's
error queue with a SCM_WIFI_STATUS cmsg that has
an int indicating ACK status (0/1).

Since it is possible that at some point we will
want to have TX timestamping and wifi status in a
single errqueue SKB (there's little point in not
doing that), redefine SO_EE_ORIGIN_TIMESTAMPING
to SO_EE_ORIGIN_TXSTATUS which can collect more
than just the timestamp; keep the old constant
as an alias of course. Currently the internal APIs
don't make that possible, but it wouldn't be hard
to split them up in a way that makes it possible.

Thanks to Neil Horman for helping me figure out
the functions that add the control messages.

John Stultz dcb69290af time: Cleanup old CONFIG_GENERIC_TIME references that snuck in
Awhile back I removed all the CONFIG_GENERIC_TIME referecnes as
the last of the non-GENERIC_TIME arches were converted.

However, due to the functionality being important and around for
awhile, there apparently were some out of tree hardware enablement
patches that used it and have since been merged.

This patch removes the remaining instances of GENERIC_TIME.

Arun Sharma 7847777a45 atomic: cleanup asm-generic atomic*.h inclusion
After changing all consumers of atomics to include <linux/atomic.h>, we
ran into some compile time errors due to this dependency chain:

linux/atomic.h
  -> asm/atomic.h
    -> asm-generic/atomic-long.h

where atomic-long.h could use funcs defined later in linux/atomic.h
without a prototype. This patches moves the code that includes
asm-generic/atomic*.h to linux/atomic.h.

Archs that need <asm-generic/atomic64.h> need to select
CONFIG_GENERIC_ATOMIC64 from now on (some of them used to include it
unconditionally).

Compile tested on i386 and x86_64 with allnoconfig.

David Howells db1c9dfa64 MN10300: die_if_no_fixup() shouldn't use get_user() as it doesn't call set_fs()
die_if_no_fixup() shouldn't use get_user() as it doesn't call set_fs() to
indicate that it wants to probe a kernel address. Instead it should use
probe_kernel_read().

This fixes the problem of gdb seeing SIGILL rather than SIGTRAP when hitting
the KGDB special breakpoint upon SysRq+g being seen. The problem was that
die_if_no_fixup() was failing to read the opcode of the instruction that caused
the exception, and thus not fixing up the exception.

This caused gdb to get a S04 response to the $? request in its remote protocol
rather than S05 - which would then cause it to continue with $C04 rather than
$c in an attempt to pass the signal onto the inferior process. The kernel,
however, does not support $Cnn, and so objects by returning an E22 response,
indicating an error. gdb does not expect this and prints:

	warning: Remote failure reply: E22

and then returns to the gdb command prompt unable to continue.

Eric W. Biederman 7b21fddd08 ns: Wire up the setns system call
32bit and 64bit on x86 are tested and working. The rest I have looked
at closely and I can't find any problems.

setns is an easy system call to wire up. It just takes two ints so I
don't expect any weird architecture porting problems.

While doing this I have noticed that we have some architectures that are
very slow to get new system calls. cris seems to be the slowest where
the last system calls wired up were preadv and pwritev. avr32 is weird
in that recvmmsg was wired up but never declared in unistd.h. frv is
behind with perf_event_open being the last syscall wired up. On h8300
the last system call wired up was epoll_wait. On m32r the last system
call wired up was fallocate. mn10300 has recvmmsg as the last system
call wired up. The rest seem to at least have syncfs wired up which was
new in the 2.6.39.

v2: Most of the architecture support added by Daniel Lezcano <dlezcano@fr.ibm.com>
v3: ported to v2.6.36-rc4 by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com>
v4: Moved wiring up of the system call to another patch
v5: ported to v2.6.39-rc6
v6: rebased onto parisc-next and net-next to avoid syscall conflicts.
v7: ported to Linus's latest post 2.6.39 tree.

Daniel Lezcano a77aea9201 cgroup: remove the ns_cgroup
The ns_cgroup is an annoying cgroup at the namespace / cgroup frontier and
leads to some problems:

  * cgroup creation is out-of-control
  * cgroup name can conflict when pids are looping
  * it is not possible to have a single process handling a lot of
    namespaces without falling in a exponential creation time
  * we may want to create a namespace without creating a cgroup

  The ns_cgroup was replaced by a compatibility flag 'clone_children',
  where a newly created cgroup will copy the parent cgroup values.
  The userspace has to manually create a cgroup and add a task to
  the 'tasks' file.

This patch removes the ns_cgroup as suggested in the following thread:

https://lists.linux-foundation.org/pipermail/containers/2009-June/018616.html

The 'cgroup_clone' function is removed because it is no longer used.

This is a userspace-visible change. Commit 45531757b4 ("cgroup: notify
ns_cgroup deprecated") (merged into 2.6.27) caused the kernel to emit a
printk warning users that the feature is planned for removal. Since that
time we have heard from XXX users who were affected by this.

Tejun Heo 0415b00d17 percpu: Always align percpu output section to PAGE_SIZE
Percpu allocator honors alignment request upto PAGE_SIZE and both the
percpu addresses in the percpu address space and the translated kernel
addresses should be aligned accordingly. The calculation of the
former depends on the alignment of percpu output section in the kernel
image.

The linker script macros PERCPU_VADDR() and PERCPU() are used to
define this output section and the latter takes @align parameter.
Several architectures are using @align smaller than PAGE_SIZE breaking
percpu memory alignment.

This patch removes @align parameter from PERCPU(), renames it to
PERCPU_SECTION() and makes it always align to PAGE_SIZE. While at it,
add PCPU_SETUP_BUG_ON() checks such that alignment problems are
reliably detected and remove percpu alignment comment recently added
in workqueue.c as the condition would trigger BUG way before reaching
there.

For um, this patch raises the alignment of percpu area. As the area
is in .init, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference.

This problem was discovered by David Howells while debugging boot
failure on mn10300.

Akinobu Mita 61f2e7b0f4 bitops: remove minix bitops from asm/bitops.h
minix bit operations are only used by minix filesystem and useless by
other modules. Because byte order of inode and block bitmaps is different
on each architecture like below:

m68k:
	big-endian 16bit indexed bitmaps

h8300, microblaze, s390, sparc, m68knommu:
	big-endian 32 or 64bit indexed bitmaps

m32r, mips, sh, xtensa:
	big-endian 32 or 64bit indexed bitmaps for big-endian mode
	little-endian bitmaps for little-endian mode

Others:
	little-endian bitmaps

In order to move minix bit operations from asm/bitops.h to architecture
independent code in minix filesystem, this provides two config options.

CONFIG_MINIX_FS_BIG_ENDIAN_16BIT_INDEXED is only selected by m68k.
CONFIG_MINIX_FS_NATIVE_ENDIAN is selected by the architectures which use
native byte order bitmaps (h8300, microblaze, s390, sparc, m68knommu,
m32r, mips, sh, xtensa). The architectures which always use little-endian
bitmaps do not select these options.

Finally, we can remove minix bit operations from asm/bitops.h for all
architectures.

Richard Henderson 5a4b65ab50 MN10300: gcc 4.6 vs am33 inline assembly
GCC 4.6 explicitly represents the MDR register. It may be accessed
via the "z" constraint. Perhaps more importantly, it tracks when
the MDR register is clobbered and uses the RETF instruction if the
incoming value is still valid.

Thus it is important to (at least) clobber the MDR register in
relevant inline assembly fragments, lest RETF be used incorrectly.

The only instances I could find are here. There are reads of the
MDR register in kernel/gdb-stub.c, but that's harmless. Although,
frankly, __builtin_return_address(0) might be a better thing in
those cases. Certainly MDR isn't going to contain anything else
that might be useful...

David Howells 5141c46c61 MN10300: Emulate single stepping in KGDB on MN10300
Emulate single stepping in KGDB on MN10300 by way of temporary breakpoint
insertion. These breakpoints are never actually seen by KGDB, and will overlay
KGDB's own breakpoints.

The breakpoints are removed by switch_to() and reinstalled on switching back so
that if preemption occurs, the preempting task doesn't hit them (though it will
still hit KGDB's regular breakpoints). If KGDB is reentered for any reason,
then the single step breakpoint is completely erased and must be set again by
the debugger.

We take advantage of the fact that KGDB will effectively halt all other CPUs
whilst this CPU is single-stepping to avoid SMP problems.

If the single-stepping task is preempted and killed without KGDB being
reinvoked, then the breakpoint(s) will be cleared and KGDB will be jumped back
into.

David Howells b75bb2365d MN10300: The icache invalidate functions should disable the icache first
The icache invalidate functions should disable the icache on AM33 and wait for
it to quiesce before attempting to invalidate it, and should then wait for it
to quiesce again before reenabling it, but on AM34 they should invalidate
directly. The same goes for the dcache invalidation, but this isn't used much.

Whilst we're at it, this can be wrapped in assembler macros to remove duplicate
code.

The AM33 manual states that:

	An operation that invalidates the cache, switches the writing mode, or
	changes the way mode must be performed after disabling the cache,
	checking the busy bit, and confirming that the cache is not in
	operation.

for the dcache [sec 2.8.3.2.1]. This is not stated so for the icache [sec
2.8.3.1.1] but the example code there suggests that it is.

Whilst the AM34 manual states that the cache must be disabled for both the
icache [sec 1.8.3.2.1] and the dcache [sec 1.8.3.2.1], the Panasonic hardware
engineers say the manual is wrong and that disabling the caches for
invalidation is wrong.

Furthermore, they say that disabling the caches on the AM34 whilst running an
SMP kernel can lead to incoherency between the various CPU caches and should
thus be avoided.

David Howells 9ee21723cc MN10300: gdbstub: Restrict single-stepping to non-preemptable non-SMP configs
Restrict single-stepping through the kernel using gdbstub to non-preemptable
non-SMP configs as gdbstub has to do software single-stepping by means of
temporary breakpoints. Hardware single-stepping is unavailable as Panasonic
have not sufficiently documented the interface to it.

Software single-stepping through preemptable or SMP kernels runs into problems
as it makes it much more likely that the wrong thread will hit the temporary
breakpoints. It seems impractical to work around the problem for the most
part. It could be possible to make a UP preemptable kernel switch temporary
breakpoints in and out in switch_to().

Tejun Heo 19df0c2fef percpu: align percpu readmostly subsection to cacheline
Currently percpu readmostly subsection may share cachelines with other
percpu subsections which may result in unnecessary cacheline bounce
and performance degradation.

This patch adds @cacheline parameter to PERCPU() and PERCPU_VADDR()
linker macros, makes each arch linker scripts specify its cacheline
size and use it to align percpu subsections.

This is based on Shaohua's x86 only patch.

David Rientjes 6a108a14fa kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERT
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option
is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than
only small devices.

This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes
references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED
option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and
can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be
considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc).

Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only
expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they
are making should enable it.

Amerigo Wang 351f8f8e64 kernel: clean up USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS
For arch which needs USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, it has to select
USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, rather than leaving a choice to user, since they
don't provide their own implementions.

Also, move on_each_cpu() to kernel/smp.c, it is strange to put it in
kernel/softirq.c.

For arch which doesn't use USE_GENERIC_SMP_HELPERS, e.g. blackfin, only
on_each_cpu() is compiled.

Peter Zijlstra 20273941f2 mm: fix race in kunmap_atomic()
Christoph reported a nice splat which illustrated a race in the new stack
based kmap_atomic implementation.

The problem is that we pop our stack slot before we're completely done
resetting its state -- in particular clearing the PTE (sometimes that's
CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM). If an interrupt happens before we actually clear
the PTE used for the last slot, that interrupt can reuse the slot in a
dirty state, which triggers a BUG in kmap_atomic().

Fix this by introducing kmap_atomic_idx() which reports the current slot
index without actually releasing it and use that to find the PTE and delay
the _pop() until after we're completely done.

Mark Salter 5a226c6f5c MN10300: Map userspace atomic op regs as a vmalloc page
The AM34 processor has an atomic operation that's the equivalent of LL/SC on
other architectures. However, rather than being done through a pair of
instructions, it's driven by writing to a pair of memory-mapped CPU control
registers.

One set of these registers (AARU/ADRU/ASRU) is available for use by userspace,
but for userspace to access them a PTE must be set up to cover the region.
This is done by dedicating the first vmalloc region page to this purpose,
setting the permissions on its PTE such that userspace can access the page.

glibc is hardcoded to expect the registers to be there.

The way atomic ops are done through these registers is straightforward:

 (1) Write the address of the word you wish to access into AARU. This causes
     the CPU to go and fetch that word and load it into ADRU. The status bits
     are also cleared in ASRU.

 (2) The current data value is read from the ADRU register and modified.

 (3) To alter the data in RAM, the revised data is written back to the ADRU
     register, which causes the CPU to attempt to write it back.

 (4) The ASRU.RW flag (ASRU read watch), ASRU.LW flag (bus lock watch),
     ASRU.IW (interrupt watch) and the ASRU.BW (bus error watch) flags then
     must be checked to confirm that the operation wasn't aborted. If any of
     the watches have been set to true, the operation was aborted.

Prevent cnt32_to_63() from being preempted in sched_clock() because it may

Whilst some callers of sched_clock() have interrupts disabled or hold

Note that sched_clock() is called from lockdep, but that shouldn't be a problem

Peter Zijlstra 3e4d3af501 mm: stack based kmap_atomic()
Keep the current interface but ignore the KM_type and use a stack based
approach.

The advantage is that we get rid of crappy code like:

	#define __KM_PTE			\
		(in_nmi() ? KM_NMI_PTE : 	\
		 in_irq() ? KM_IRQ_PTE :	\
		 KM_PTE0)

and in general can stop worrying about what context we're in and what kmap
slots might be appropriate for that.

The downside is that FRV kmap_atomic() gets more expensive.

For now we use a CPP trick suggested by Andrew:

  #define kmap_atomic(page, args...) __kmap_atomic(page)

to avoid having to touch all kmap_atomic() users in a single patch.

David Howells 5260562754 MN10300: Fix the PERCPU() alignment to allow for workqueues
In the MN10300 arch, we occasionally see an assertion being tripped in
alloc_cwqs() at the following line:

        /* just in case, make sure it's actually aligned */
  --->  BUG_ON(!IS_ALIGNED(wq->cpu_wq.v, align));
        return wq->cpu_wq.v ? 0 : -ENOMEM;

The values are:

        wa->cpu_wq.v => 0x902776e0
        align => 0x100

and align is calculated by the following:

        const size_t align = max_t(size_t, 1 << WORK_STRUCT_FLAG_BITS,
                                   __alignof__(unsigned long long));

This is because the pointer in question (wq->cpu_wq.v) loses some of its
lower bits to control flags, and so the object it points to must be
sufficiently aligned to avoid the need to use those bits for pointing to
things.

Currently, 4 control bits and 4 colour bits are used in normal
circumstances, plus a debugging bit if debugging is set. This requires
the cpu_workqueue_struct struct to be at least 256 bytes aligned (or 512
bytes aligned with debugging).

PERCPU() alignment on MN13000, however, is only 32 bytes as set in
vmlinux.lds.S. So we set this to PAGE_SIZE (4096) to match most other
arches and stick a comment in alloc_cwqs() for anyone else who triggers
the assertion.

David Howells df9ee29270 Fix IRQ flag handling naming
Fix the IRQ flag handling naming. In linux/irqflags.h under one configuration,
it maps:

	local_irq_enable() -> raw_local_irq_enable()
	local_irq_disable() -> raw_local_irq_disable()
	local_irq_save() -> raw_local_irq_save()
	...

and under the other configuration, it maps:

	raw_local_irq_enable() -> local_irq_enable()
	raw_local_irq_disable() -> local_irq_disable()
	raw_local_irq_save() -> local_irq_save()
	...

This is quite confusing. There should be one set of names expected of the
arch, and this should be wrapped to give another set of names that are expected
by users of this facility.

Change this to have the arch provide:

	flags = arch_local_save_flags()
	flags = arch_local_irq_save()
	arch_local_irq_restore(flags)
	arch_local_irq_disable()
	arch_local_irq_enable()
	arch_irqs_disabled_flags(flags)
	arch_irqs_disabled()
	arch_safe_halt()

Then linux/irqflags.h wraps these to provide:

	raw_local_save_flags(flags)
	raw_local_irq_save(flags)
	raw_local_irq_restore(flags)
	raw_local_irq_disable()
	raw_local_irq_enable()
	raw_irqs_disabled_flags(flags)
	raw_irqs_disabled()
	raw_safe_halt()

with type checking on the flags 'arguments', and then wraps those to provide:

	local_save_flags(flags)
	local_irq_save(flags)
	local_irq_restore(flags)
	local_irq_disable()
	local_irq_enable()
	irqs_disabled_flags(flags)
	irqs_disabled()
	safe_halt()

with tracing included if enabled.

The arch functions can now all be inline functions rather than some of them
having to be macros.

Linus Torvalds 5336377d62 modules: Fix module_bug_list list corruption race
With all the recent module loading cleanups, we've minimized the code
that sits under module_mutex, fixing various deadlocks and making it
possible to do most of the module loading in parallel.

However, that whole conversion totally missed the rather obscure code
that adds a new module to the list for BUG() handling. That code was
doubly obscure because (a) the code itself lives in lib/bugs.c (for
dubious reasons) and (b) it gets called from the architecture-specific
"module_finalize()" rather than from generic code.

Calling it from arch-specific code makes no sense what-so-ever to begin
with, and is now actively wrong since that code isn't protected by the
module loading lock any more.

So this commit moves the "module_bug_{finalize,cleanup}()" calls away
from the arch-specific code, and into the generic code - and in the
process protects it with the module_mutex so that the list operations
are now safe.

Future fixups:
 - move the module list handling code into kernel/module.c where it
   belongs.
 - get rid of 'module_bug_list' and just use the regular list of modules
   (called 'modules' - imagine that) that we already create and maintain
   for other reasons.

David Howells 57cf4f78c6 MN10300: Fix flush_icache_range()
flush_icache_range() is given virtual addresses to describe the region. It
deals with these by attempting to translate them through the current set of
page tables.

This is fine for userspace memory and vmalloc()'d areas as they are governed by
page tables. However, since the regions above 0x80000000 aren't translated
through the page tables by the MMU, the kernel doesn't bother to set up page
tables for them (see paging_init()).

This means flush_icache_range() as it stands cannot be used to flush regions of
the VM area between 0x80000000 and 0x9fffffff where the kernel resides if the
data cache is operating in WriteBack mode.

To fix this, make flush_icache_range() first check for addresses in the upper
half of VM space and deal with them appropriately, before dealing with any
range in the page table mapped area.

Ordinarily, this is not a problem, but it has the capacity to make kprobes and
kgdb malfunction. It should not affect gdbstub, signal frame setup or module
loading as gdb has its own flush functions, and the others take place in the
page table mapped area only.

David Howells d7627467b7 Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer
Make do_execve() take a const filename pointer so that kernel_execve() compiles
correctly on ARM:

arch/arm/kernel/sys_arm.c:88: warning: passing argument 1 of 'do_execve' discards qualifiers from pointer target type

This also requires the argv and envp arguments to be consted twice, once for
the pointer array and once for the strings the array points to. This is
because do_execve() passes a pointer to the filename (now const) to
copy_strings_kernel(). A simpler alternative would be to cast the filename
pointer in do_execve() when it's passed to copy_strings_kernel().

do_execve() may not change any of the strings it is passed as part of the argv
or envp lists as they are some of them in .rodata, so marking these strings as
const should be fine.

Further kernel_execve() and sys_execve() need to be changed to match.

This has been test built on x86_64, frv, arm and mips.

FUJITA Tomonori 3b9c6c11f5 dma-mapping: remove dma_is_consistent API
Architectures implement dma_is_consistent() in different ways (some
misinterpret the definition of API in DMA-API.txt). So it hasn't been so
useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely
out-of-tree drivers use the API.

Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look
useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't
allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are
definitely necessary for drivers.

Let's remove this API.

FUJITA Tomonori 4565f0170d dma-mapping: unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations
dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures
defines it as ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN (formally ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN). So we

Note that some architectures implement dma_get_cache_alignment wrongly.
dma_get_cache_alignment() should return the minimum DMA alignment. So
fully-coherent architectures should return 1. This patch also fixes this

FUJITA Tomonori a6eb9fe105 dma-mapping: rename ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN to ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN
Now each architecture has the own dma_get_cache_alignment implementation.

dma_get_cache_alignment returns the minimum DMA alignment. Architectures
define it as ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN (it's used to make sure that malloc'ed
buffer is DMA-safe; the buffer doesn't share a cache with the others). So
we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations.

This patch:

dma_get_cache_alignment() needs to know if an architecture defines
ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN or not (needs to know if architecture has DMA
alignment restriction). However, slab.h define ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN if
architectures doesn't define it.

Let's rename ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN to ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN.
ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN is used only in the internals of slab/slob/slub
(except for crypto).

hyc@symas.com 26df6d1340 tty: Add EXTPROC support for LINEMODE
This patch is against the 2.6.34 source.

Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com:

     These are the changes needed for the kernel to support
     LINEMODE in the server.

     There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC.
     When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver
     are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping
     of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn
     off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of
     what state the user wants the terminal to be in.

     New ioctl:
         TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the
                         current process group of the pty.

     There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit.
     When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit
     is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the
     next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL
     bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty
     to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then
     issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state.

Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet
I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for
any remote terminal protocol, including ssh.

The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989.
For historical reference, a good copy of the relevant files can be found
here:

Cesar Eduardo Barros 597781f3e5 kmap_atomic: make kunmap_atomic() harder to misuse
kunmap_atomic() is currently at level -4 on Rusty's "Hard To Misuse"
list[1] ("Follow common convention and you'll get it wrong"), except in
some architectures when CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is set[2][3].

kunmap() takes a pointer to a struct page; kunmap_atomic(), however, takes
takes a pointer to within the page itself. This seems to once in a while
trip people up (the convention they are following is the one from
kunmap()).

Make it much harder to misuse, by moving it to level 9 on Rusty's list[4]
("The compiler/linker won't let you get it wrong"). This is done by
refusing to build if the type of its first argument is a pointer to a
struct page.

The real kunmap_atomic() is renamed to kunmap_atomic_notypecheck()
(which is what you would call in case for some strange reason calling it
with a pointer to a struct page is not incorrect in your code).

The previous version of this patch was compile tested on x86-64.

[1] http://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-04-01.html
[2] In these cases, it is at level 5, "Do it right or it will always
    break at runtime."
[3] At least mips and powerpc look very similar, and sparc also seems to
    share a common ancestor with both; there seems to be quite some
    degree of copy-and-paste coding here. The include/asm/highmem.h file
    for these three archs mention x86 CPUs at its top.

Yannick found that video does not work with 2.6.34. The cause of this
bug was that the BIOS had assigned the wrong range to the PCI bridge
above the video device. Before 2.6.34 the kernel would have shrunk
the size of the bridge window, but since
  d65245c PCI: don't shrink bridge resources
the kernel will avoid shrinking BIOS ranges.

So zero out the old range if we fail to claim it at boot time; this will

Tejun Heo 5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
  only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
  gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
  blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
  to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
  core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
  alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
  doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
  because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
  an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
   over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
   and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
   some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
   embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
   from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
   APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
   editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
   files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
   inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
   wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
   slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
   were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
   distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
   more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
   build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
   a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

Christoph Hellwig dacbe41f77 ptrace: move user_enable_single_step & co prototypes to linux/ptrace.h
While in theory user_enable_single_step/user_disable_single_step/
user_enable_blockstep could also be provided as an inline or macro there's
no good reason to do so, and having the prototype in one places keeps code
size and confusion down.

Roland said:

  The original thought there was that user_enable_single_step() et al
  might well be only an instruction or three on a sane machine (as if we
  have any of those!), and since there is only one call site inlining
  would be beneficial. But I agree that there is no strong reason to care
  about inlining it.

  As to the arch changes, there is only one thought I'd add to the
  record. It was always my thinking that for an arch where
  PTRACE_SINGLESTEP does text-modifying breakpoint insertion,
  user_enable_single_step() should not be provided. That is,
  arch_has_single_step()=>true means that there is an arch facility with
  "pure" semantics that does not have any unexpected side effects.
  Inserting a breakpoint might do very unexpected strange things in
  multi-threaded situations. Aside from that, it is a peculiar side
  effect that user_{enable,disable}_single_step() should cause COW
  de-sharing of text pages and so forth. For PTRACE_SINGLESTEP, all these
  peculiarities are the status quo ante for that arch, so having
  arch_ptrace() itself do those is one thing. But for building other
  things in the future, it is nicer to have a uniform "pure" semantics
  that arch-independent code can expect.

  OTOH, all such arch issues are really up to the arch maintainer. As
  of today, there is nothing but ptrace using user_enable_single_step() et
  al so it's a distinction without a practical difference. If/when there
  are other facilities that use user_enable_single_step() and might care,
  the affected arch's can revisit the question when someone cares about
  the quality of the arch support for said new facility.

Christoph Hellwig baed7fc9b5 Add generic sys_ipc wrapper
Add a generic implementation of the ipc demultiplexer syscall. Except for
s390 and sparc64 all implementations of the sys_ipc are nearly identical.

There are slight differences in the types of the parameters, where mips
and powerpc as the only 64-bit architectures with sys_ipc use unsigned
long for the "third" argument as it gets casted to a pointer later, while
it traditionally is an "int" like most other paramters. frv goes even
further and uses unsigned long for all parameters execept for "ptr" which
is a pointer type everywhere. The change from int to unsigned long for
"third" and back to "int" for the others on frv should be fine due to the
in-register calling conventions for syscalls (we already had a similar
issue with the generic sys_ptrace), but I'd prefer to have the arch
maintainers looks over this in details.

Except for that h8300, m68k and m68knommu lack an impplementation of the
semtimedop sub call which this patch adds, and various architectures have
gets used - at least on i386 it seems superflous as the compat code on
x86-64 and ia64 doesn't even bother to implement it.

Russell King 4b3073e1c5 MM: Pass a PTE pointer to update_mmu_cache() rather than the PTE itself
On VIVT ARM, when we have multiple shared mappings of the same file
in the same MM, we need to ensure that we have coherency across all
copies. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages
uncacheable.

This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we
now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available
for modification via update_mmu_cache().

Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to
update_mmu_cache():

  On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables
  to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much
  more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the
  pte_t?

Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC:

  Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that
  -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases,
  for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the
  _PAGE_EXEC.

So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and
remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to
suit.

Access to the ASB2305's PCnet32 NIC doesn't work correctly because when
the NIC attempts to update the ring buffer flags by DMA, the change to RAM
crops up about 17uS after the interrupt line is asserted. This is almost
certainly due to a bug in the PCI bridge FPGA on that board.

Insert PCI root bus resources for the MN10300-based ASB2305 development

bus address space is considerably smaller than the CPU's full address
space and non-PCI devices lie outside of the PCI window that we might want

Without this patch, the PCI root bus uses the platform-level bus

platform_device_add() reject devices outside of this window.

 - checks PCI_NUM_RESOURCES (11), not 6, resources
 - skips resources that have neither IORESOURCE_IO nor IORESOURCE_MEM set
 - skips ROM resources unless IORESOURCE_ROM_ENABLE is set
 - checks for resource collisions with "!r->parent"

Mark Salter d6bb7a1ad3 mn10300: add cc clobbers to asm statements
gcc 4.2.1 for MN10300 is more agressive than the older gcc in
reordering/moving other insns between an insn that sets flags and an insn
that uses those flags. This leads to trouble with asm statements which
are missing an explicit "cc" clobber. This patch adds the explicit "cc"
clobber to asm statements which do indeed clobber the condition flags.

Mark Salter 4c03ee7352 mn10300: signal stack fix
This fixes a signal stack handling problem in the MN10300 arch. When new
threads are cloned with CLONE_VM, they don't inherit the alternate signal
stack. They do share the signal flags, though. When deciding whether to
use an alternate stack, the arch code needs to check to make sure the task
struct contains a valid alternate stack. This patch fixes the MN10300
arch by using the sas_ss_flags() test provided by sched.h rather than the
on_sig_stack() test which is insufficient by itself.

Ilya Loginov 2d4dc890b5 block: add helpers to run flush_dcache_page() against a bio and a request's pages
Mtdblock driver doesn't call flush_dcache_page for pages in request. So,
this causes problems on architectures where the icache doesn't fill from
the dcache or with dcache aliases. The patch fixes this.

The ARCH_IMPLEMENTS_FLUSH_DCACHE_PAGE symbol was introduced to avoid
pointless empty cache-thrashing loops on architectures for which
flush_dcache_page() is a no-op. Every architecture was provided with this
flush pages on architectires where ARCH_IMPLEMENTS_FLUSH_DCACHE_PAGE is
equal 1 or do nothing otherwise.

Tejun Heo 390dfd95c5 percpu: make misc percpu symbols unique
This patch updates misc percpu related symbols such that percpu
symbols are unique and don't clash with local symbols. This serves
two purposes of decreasing the possibility of global percpu symbol
collision and allowing dropping per_cpu__ prefix from percpu symbols.

* drivers/crypto/padlock-aes.c: s/last_cword/paes_last_cword/

* drivers/lguest/x86/core.c: s/last_cpu/lg_last_cpu/

* drivers/s390/net/netiucv.c: rename the variable used in a macro to
  avoid clashing with percpu symbol

* arch/mn10300/kernel/kprobes.c: replace current_ prefix with cur_ for
  static variables. Please note that percpu symbol current_kprobe
  can't be changed as it's used by generic code.

which cause name clashes" patch.

Neil Horman 3b885787ea net: Generalize socket rx gap / receive queue overflow cmsg
Create a new socket level option to report number of queue overflows

Recently I augmented the AF_PACKET protocol to report the number of frames lost
on the socket receive queue between any two enqueued frames. This value was
exported via a SOL_PACKET level cmsg. AFter I completed that work it was
requested that this feature be generalized so that any datagram oriented socket
could make use of this option. As such I've created this patch, It creates a
new SOL_SOCKET level option called SO_RXQ_OVFL, which when enabled exports a
SOL_SOCKET level cmsg that reports the nubmer of times the sk_receive_queue
overflowed between any two given frames. It also augments the AF_PACKET
protocol to take advantage of this new feature (as it previously did not touch
sk->sk_drops, which this patch uses to record the overflow count). Tested
successfully by me.

Notes:

1) Unlike my previous patch, this patch simply records the sk_drops value, which
is not a number of drops between packets, but rather a total number of drops.
Deltas must be computed in user space.

2) While this patch currently works with datagram oriented protocols, it will
also be accepted by non-datagram oriented protocols. I'm not sure if thats
agreeable to everyone, but my argument in favor of doing so is that, for those
protocols which aren't applicable to this option, sk_drops will always be zero,
and reporting no drops on a receive queue that isn't used for those
non-participating protocols seems reasonable to me. This also saves us having
to code in a per-protocol opt in mechanism.

3) This applies cleanly to net-next assuming that commit
977750076d (my af packet cmsg patch) is reverted

Arnd Bergmann 6e17b17f1f mm: remove duplicate asm/mman.h files
A number of architectures have identical asm/mman.h files so they can all

Arnd Bergmann 90f72aa58b mm: add MAP_HUGETLB for mmaping pseudo-anonymous huge page regions
Add a flag for mmap that will be used to request a huge page region that
will look like anonymous memory to user space. This is accomplished by
using a file on the internal vfsmount. MAP_HUGETLB is a modifier of
MAP_ANONYMOUS and so must be specified with it. The region will behave
the same as a MAP_ANONYMOUS region using small pages.

The patch also adds the MAP_STACK flag, which was previously defined only
on some architectures but not on others. Since MAP_STACK is meant to be a
hint only, architectures can define it without assigning a specific
meaning to it.

Ingo Molnar cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
  with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
  over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
  in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
  better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
  instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

David Howells ee18d64c1f KEYS: Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring on its parent [try #6]
Add a keyctl to install a process's session keyring onto its parent. This
replaces the parent's session keyring. Because the COW credential code does
not permit one process to change another process's credentials directly, the
change is deferred until userspace next starts executing again. Normally this
will be after a wait*() syscall.

To support this, three new security hooks have been provided:
cred_alloc_blank() to allocate unset security creds, cred_transfer() to fill in
the blank security creds and key_session_to_parent() - which asks the LSM if
the process may replace its parent's session keyring.

The replacement may only happen if the process has the same ownership details
as its parent, and the process has LINK permission on the session keyring, and
the session keyring is owned by the process, and the LSM permits it.

Note that this requires alteration to each architecture's notify_resume path.
This has been done for all arches barring blackfin, m68k* and xtensa, all of
which need assembly alteration to support TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME. This allows the
replacement to be performed at the point the parent process resumes userspace
execution.

This allows the userspace AFS pioctl emulation to fully emulate newpag() and
the VIOCSETTOK and VIOCSETTOK2 pioctls, all of which require the ability to
alter the parent process's PAG membership. However, since kAFS doesn't use
PAGs per se, but rather dumps the keys into the session keyring, the session
keyring of the parent must be replaced if, for example, VIOCSETTOK is passed
the newpag flag.

This can be tested with the following program:

	#include <stdio.h>
	#include <stdlib.h>
	#include <keyutils.h>

	#define KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT	18

	#define OSERROR(X, S) do { if ((long)(X) == -1) { perror(S); exit(1); } } while(0)

	int main(int argc, char **argv)
	{
		key_serial_t keyring, key;
		long ret;

		keyring = keyctl_join_session_keyring(argv[1]);
		OSERROR(keyring, "keyctl_join_session_keyring");

		key = add_key("user", "a", "b", 1, keyring);
		OSERROR(key, "add_key");

		ret = keyctl(KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT);
		OSERROR(ret, "KEYCTL_SESSION_TO_PARENT");

		return 0;
	}

Compiled and linked with -lkeyutils, you should see something like:

	[dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show
	Session Keyring
	       -3 --alswrv   4043  4043  keyring: _ses
	355907932 --alswrv   4043    -1   \_ keyring: _uid.4043
	[dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag
	[dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show
	Session Keyring
	       -3 --alswrv   4043  4043  keyring: _ses
	1055658746 --alswrv   4043  4043   \_ user: a
	[dhowells@andromeda ~]$ /tmp/newpag hello
	[dhowells@andromeda ~]$ keyctl show
	Session Keyring
	       -3 --alswrv   4043  4043  keyring: hello
	340417692 --alswrv   4043  4043   \_ user: a

Where the test program creates a new session keyring, sticks a user key named
'a' into it and then installs it on its parent.

Similar to SO_TYPE returning the socket type, SO_PROTOCOL allows to

I am not quite sure why we have that-many copies of socket.h, and why
the values are not the same on all arches either, but for where hex
numbers dominate, I use 0x1029 for SO_PROTOCOL as that seems to be

Benjamin Herrenschmidt 9e1b32caa5 mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb()
mm: Pass virtual address to [__]p{te,ud,md}_free_tlb()

Upcoming paches to support the new 64-bit "BookE" powerpc architecture
will need to have the virtual address corresponding to PTE page when
freeing it, due to the way the HW table walker works.

Basically, the TLB can be loaded with "large" pages that cover the whole
virtual space (well, sort-of, half of it actually) represented by a PTE
page, and which contain an "indirect" bit indicating that this TLB entry
RPN points to an array of PTEs from which the TLB can then create direct
entries. Thus, in order to invalidate those when PTE pages are deleted,
we need the virtual address to pass to tlbilx or tlbivax instructions.

The old trick of sticking it somewhere in the PTE page struct page sucks
too much, the address is almost readily available in all call sites and
almost everybody implemets these as macros, so we may as well add the
argument everywhere. I added it to the pmd and pud variants for consistency.

Tim Abbott 04e448d9a3 vmlinux.lds.h: restructure BSS linker script macros
The BSS section macros in vmlinux.lds.h currently place the .sbss
input section outside the bounds of [__bss_start, __bss_end]. On all
architectures except for microblaze that handle both .sbss and
__bss_start/__bss_end, this is wrong: the .sbss input section is
within the range [__bss_start, __bss_end]. Relatedly, the example
code at the top of the file actually has __bss_start/__bss_end defined
twice; I believe the right fix here is to define them in the
BSS_SECTION macro but not in the BSS macro.

Another problem with the current macros is that several
architectures have an ALIGN(4) or some other small number just before
__bss_stop in their linker scripts. The BSS_SECTION macro currently
hardcodes this to 4; while it should really be an argument. It also
ignores its sbss_align argument; fix that.

mn10300 is the only user at present of any of the macros touched by
this patch. It looks like mn10300 actually was incorrectly converted
to use the new BSS() macro (the alignment of 4 prior to conversion was
a __bss_stop alignment, but the argument to the BSS macro is a start
alignment). So fix this as well.

I'd like acks from Sam and David on this one. Also CCing Paul, since

Alexey Dobriyan 405f55712d headers: smp_lock.h redux
* Remove smp_lock.h from files which don't need it (including some headers!)
* Add smp_lock.h to files which do need it
* Make smp_lock.h include conditional in hardirq.h
  It's needed only for one kernel_locked() usage which is under CONFIG_PREEMPT

  This will make hardirq.h inclusion cheaper for every PREEMPT=n config
  (which includes allmodconfig/allyesconfig, BTW)

Peter Zijlstra c99e6efe1b sched: INIT_PREEMPT_COUNT
Pull the initial preempt_count value into a single
definition site.

Maintainers for: alpha, ia64 and m68k, please have a look,
your arch code is funny.

The header magic is a bit odd, but similar to the KERNEL_DS
one, CPP waits with expanding these macros until the
INIT_THREAD_INFO macro itself is expanded, which is in
arch/*/kernel/init_task.c where we've already included
sched.h so we're good.

Tejun Heo 023bf6f1b8 linker script: unify usage of discard definition
Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have
considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch
implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining
tedious and adding new entries error-prone.

This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the
end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld
uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default
discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script.

ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific
subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final
image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion.

defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64,
alpha, sparc, sparc64 and s390. Michal Simek tested microblaze.

Joe Perches ad361c9884 Remove multiple KERN_ prefixes from printk formats
Commit 5fd29d6ccb ("printk: clean up
handling of log-levels and newlines") changed printk semantics. printk
lines with multiple KERN_<level> prefixes are no longer emitted as
before the patch.

<level> is now included in the output on each additional use.

Remove all uses of multiple KERN_<level>s in formats.
