Implemented with base64-encoded strings in qga json protocol.
Glib portable GIOChannel is used for data I/O.
Optinal stdin parameter of guest-exec command is now used as
stdin content for spawned subprocess.
If capture-output bool flag is specified, guest-exec redirects out/err
file descriptiors internally to pipes and collects subprocess
output.
Guest-exe-status is modified to return this collected data to requestor
in base64 encoding.

qemu-ga should not exit on guest-file-write to pipe without read end
but proper error code should be returned. The behavior of the
spawned process should be default thus SIGPIPE processing should be
reset to default after fork() but before exec().

Guest-exec rewritten in platform-independent style with glib spawn.
Child process is spawn asynchronously and exit status can later
be picked up by guest-exec-status command.
stdin/stdout/stderr of the child now is redirected to /dev/null
Later we will add ability to specify stdin in guest-exec command
and to get collected stdout/stderr with guest-exec-status.

Some guests don't expose memory blocks via sysfs at all. This
shouldn't be a failure, instead just return an empty list. For
other access failures we still report an error.

g_new(T, n) is neater than g_malloc(sizeof(T) * n). It's also safer,
for two reasons. One, it catches multiplication overflowing size_t.
Two, it returns T * rather than void *, which lets the compiler catch
more type errors.
This commit only touches allocations with size arguments of the form
sizeof(T). Same Coccinelle semantic patch as in commit b45c03f.

A number of source files have statements accidentally
terminated by a double semicolon - eg 'foo = bar;;'.
This is harmless but a mistake none the less.
The tcg/ia64/tcg-target.c file is whitelisted because
it has valid use of ';;' in a comment containing assembly
code.

This is particularly useful when we abort in error_propagate(),
because there the stack backtrace doesn't lead to where the error was
created. Looks like this:
Unexpected error in parse_block_error_action() at .../qemu/blockdev.c:322:

Aborted (core dumped)
Note: to get this example output, I monkey-patched drive_new() to pass
&error_abort to blockdev_init().
To keep the error handling boiler plate from growing even more, all
error_setFOO() become macros expanding into error_setFOO_internal()
with additional __FILE__, __LINE__, __func__ arguments. Not exactly
pretty, but it works.
The macro trickery breaks down when you take the address of an
error_setFOO(). Fortunately, we do that in just one place: qemu-ga's
Windows VSS provider and requester DLL wants to call
error_setg_win32() through a function pointer "to avoid linking glib
to the DLL". Use error_setg_win32_internal() there. The use of the
function pointer is already wrapped in a macro, so the churn isn't
bad.
Code size increases by some 35KiB for me (0.7%). Tolerable. Could be
less if we passed relative rather than absolute source file names to
the compiler, or forwent reporting __func__.

requester.cpp uses this pattern to receive an error and pass it on to
the caller (err_is_set() macro peeled off for clarity):
... code that may set errset->errp ...
if (errset->errp && *errset->errp) {
... handle error ...
}
This breaks when errset->errp is null. As far as I can tell, it
currently isn't, so this is merely fragile, not actually broken.
The robust way to do this is to receive the error in a local variable,
then propagate it up, like this:
Error *err = NULL;
... code that may set err ...
if (err)
... handle error ...
error_propagate(errset->errp, err);
}

qga_vss_fsfreeze() casts error_set_win32() from
void (*)(Error **, int, ErrorClass, const char *, ...)
to
void (*)(void **, int, int, const char *, ...)
The result is later called. Since the two types are not compatible,
the call is undefined behavior. It works in practice anyway.
However, there's no real need for trickery here. Clean it up as
follows:
* Declare struct Error, and fix the first parameter.
* Switch to error_setg_win32(). This gets rid of the troublesome
ErrorClass parameter. Requires converting error_setg_win32() from
macro to function, but that's trivially easy, because this is the
only user of error_set_win32().

Use NetUserSetInfo() to set the user password.
This function is notoriously known to be problematic for users with EFS
encrypted files. But the alternative, NetUserChangePassword() requires
the old password. Nevertheless, The EFS file should be recovered by
changing back to the old password.

Following patch will return allocated strings, so we must correctly
initialize alloc & free them. The nice side effect is that we no longer
have to check for "fixed_state_dir" to call ga_install_service() with a
NULL state dir. The default values are set after parsing the command
line options.

Previously, running the .msi would unregister the QEMU GA VSS service if QEMU GA was already installed on the machine, and then register it only if QEMU GA was NOT previously installed. This behavior caused the service to be registered only after the INITIAL installation, and any subsequent run of the .msi (to redo, repair, or upgrade the installation) ended in the service being unregistered.
Now, the VSS service is still unregistered if QEMU GA is already installed (so that a fix or an update could be performed) but then it is registered again (if the GA is not being uninstalled) thus finishing the repair/upgrade correctly. Additionally, downgrading is now prevented. If a user would like to downgrade a version, he/she must uninstall the newer version first.

PCIAddress inforfation is obtained via SetupApi, which provides the
information about address, bus, etc. We look throught entire device tree
in the system and try to find device object for given volume. For this PDO
SetupDiGetDeviceRegistryProperty is called, which reads PCI configuration
for a given devicei if it is possible.
This is the most convinient way for a userspace service. The lookup is
performed for every volume available. However, this information is
not mandatory for vss-provider.
In order to use SetupApi we need to notify linker about it. We do not need
to install additional libs, so we do not make separate configuration
option to use libsetupapi.su
SetupApi gives as the same information as kernel driver
with IRP_MN_QUERY_INTERFACE.

According to Microsoft disk location path can be obtained via
IOCTL_SCSI_GET_ADDRESS. Unfortunately this ioctl can not be used for all
devices. There are certain bus types which could be obtained with this
API. Please, refer to the following link for more details

Bus type could be obtained using IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY. Enum
STORAGE_BUS_TYPE describes all buses supported by OS.
Windows defines more bus types than Linux. Thus some values have been added
to GuestDiskBusType.

We should use GetVolumeXXX api to work with volumes. This will help us to
resolve the situation with volumes without drive letter, i.e. when the
volume is mounted as a folder. Such volume is called mounted folder.
This volume is a regular mounted volume from all other points of view.
The information about non mounted volume is reported as System Reserved.
This volume is not mounted and thus it is not writable.
GuestDiskAddressList API is not used because operations are performed with
volumes but no with disks. This means that spanned disk will
be counted and handled as a single volume. It is worth mentioning
that the information about every disk in the volume can be queried
via IOCTL_VOLUME_GET_VOLUME_DISK_EXTENTS.

We need qmp_quest_get_fsinfo togather with vss-provider, which works with
volumes. The call to this function is implemented via
FindFirst/NextVolumes. Moreover, volumes in Windows OS are filesystem unit,
so it will be more effective to work with them rather with devices.

It's possible to set system time with dates after 2070, however, it's
not possible to set the RTC. It has limitation to up to year
2070 (1970+100). In order to keep both clock in sync and before the
kernel complains on invalid values, bail out early.

By default, IPv4 prefixes will be derived by matching the address
to those returned by GetAdaptersInfo. IPv6 prefixes can not be
matched this way due to the unpredictable order of entries.
In Windows Vista/2008 guests and newer, both IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes
can be retrieved from OnLinkPrefixLength. Setting --extra-cflags
in the build configuration to "-D_WIN32_WINNT=0x600"
or greater makes OnLinkPrefixLength available. Setting --extra-cflags
is not required and if not set, the default approach to get the prefix
will be taken.

The current guest-fstrim support only returns an error if some
mountpoint was unable to be trimmed, skipping any possible additional
mountpoints. The result of the TRIM operation itself is also discarded.
This change returns a per mountpoint result of the TRIM operation. If an
error occurs on some mountpoints that error is returned and the
guest-fstrim continue with any additional mountpoints.
The returned values for errors, minimum and trimmed are dependant on the
filesystem, storage stacks and kernel version.

The FITRIM ioctl updates the fstrim_range structure it receives. This
way the caller can determine how many bytes were trimmed. The
guest-fstrim logic reuses the same fstrim_range for each filesystem,
effectively limiting each filesystem to trim at most as much as the
previous was able to trim.
If a previous filesystem would have trimmed 0 bytes, than the next
filesystem would report an error 'Invalid argument' because a FITRIM
request with length 0 is not valid.
This change resets the fstrim_range structure for each filesystem.

These macros expand into error class enumeration constant, comma,
string. Unclean. Has been that way since commit 13f59ae.
The error class is always ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR since the previous
commit.
Clean up as follows:
* Prepend every use of a QERR_ macro by ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, and
delete it from the QERR_ macro. No change after preprocessing.
* Rewrite error_set(ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, ...) into
error_setg(...). Again, no change after preprocessing.

Existing command line options include '-s install' and '-s uninstall'.
These options install/uninstall both Windows QEMU GA service
and optional VSS COM server. The QEMU GA Windows service allows
always-on serving guest agent's QMP commands and VSS COM server
enables guest agent integration with Volume Shadow Service.
This commit introdices new options '-s vss-install' and '-s vss-uninstall',
affecting only GA VSS COM server registration. The new options are useful
for registering and unregistering the COM server during MSI installation,
upgrade and uninstallation.

Referring to "type" as both a meta-type (built-in, enum, union,
alternate, or struct) and a specific type (the name that the
schema uses for declaring structs) is confusing. Do the bulk of

For a few QMP commands, we are forced to pass an arbitrary type
without tracking it properly in QAPI. Among the existing clients,
this unnamed type was spelled 'dict', 'visitor', and '**'; this
patch standardizes on '**', matching the documentation changes
earlier in the series.
Meanwhile, for the 'gen' key, we have been ignoring the value,
although the schema consistently used "'no'" ('success-response'
was hard-coded to checking for 'no'). But now that we can support
a literal "false" in the schema, we might as well use that rather
than ignoring the value or special-casing a random string. Note
that these are one-way switches (use of 'gen':true is not the same
as omitting 'gen'). Also, the use of '**' requires 'gen':false,
but the use of 'gen':false does not mandate the use of '**'.
There is no difference to the generated code. Add some tests on
what we'd like to guarantee, although it will take later patches
to clean up test results and actually enforce the use of a bool
parameter.

configure script may add -fstack-protector-strong option instead
of -fstack-protector-all, depending on availability ( see
commit 63678e17c ). Both options have to by filtered out for
qga-vss.dll, otherwise MinGW cross-compilation fails at linking
stage.

The command is not implemented correctly yet. The documentation allows
to not pass any value to set, in which case the time is re-read from
RTC. However, reading CMOS on Windows is not trivial to implement. So
instead of pretending we've set the correct time, fail explicitly.

Add a new 'guest-set-user-password' command for changing the password
of guest OS user accounts. This command is needed to enable OpenStack
to support its API for changing the admin password of guests running
on KVM/QEMU. It is not practical to provide a command at the QEMU
level explicitly targetting administrator account password change
only, since different guest OS have different names for the admin
account. While UNIX systems use 'root', Windows systems typically
use 'Administrator' and even that can be renamed. Higher level apps
like OpenStack have the ability to figure out the correct admin
account name since they have info that QEMU/libvirt do not.
The command accepts either the clear text password string, encoded
in base64 to make it 8-bit safe in JSON:

when any failures occured. But strerror()'s parameter cannot be

Technically, fcntl(soc, F_SETFL, O_NONBLOCK)
is incorrect since it clobbers all other file flags.
We can use F_GETFL to get the current flags, set or
clear the O_NONBLOCK flag, then use F_SETFL to set the flags.

Currently management softwares cannot know whether a qemu-ga command is
supported or not on the running platform until they actually execute it.
This patch disables unsupported commands at launch time of qemu-ga, so that
management softwares can check whether they are supported from 'enabled'
property of the result from 'guest-info' command.

Add command to get mounted filesystems information in the guest.
The returned value contains a list of mountpoint paths and
corresponding disks info such as disk bus type, drive address,
and the disk controllers' PCI addresses, so that management layer
such as libvirt can resolve the disk backends.

In Linux guest, the disk information is resolved from sysfs. So far,
it only supports virtio-blk, virtio-scsi, IDE, SATA, SCSI disks on x86
hosts, and "disk" parameter may be empty for unsupported disk types.

If an array of mount point paths is specified as 'mountpoints' argument
of guest-fsfreeze-freeze-list, qemu-ga will only freeze the file systems
mounted on specified paths in Linux guests. Otherwise, it works as the
same way as guest-fsfreeze-freeze.
This would be useful when the host wants to create partial disk snapshots.

Using error_is_set(ERRP) to find out whether a function failed is
either wrong, fragile, or unnecessarily opaque. It's wrong when ERRP
may be null, because errors go undetected when it is. It's fragile
when proving ERRP non-null involves a non-local argument. Else, it's
unnecessarily opaque (see commit 84d18f0).
The error_is_set(errp) in the guest agent command handler functions
are merely fragile, because all chall chains (do_qmp_dispatch() via
the generated marshalling functions) pass a non-null errp argument.
Make the code more robust and more obviously correct: receive the
error in a local variable, then propagate it through the parameter.

Using error_is_set(errp) to check whether a function call failed is
fragile: it breaks when errp is null. ga_get_fd_handle() and
guest_file_handle_add() don't return a useful value when they fail,
but that's just stupid. Fix that, and check them instead. As far
as I can tell, errp can't be null there, but this is more robust and
more obviously correct.

As the description to the guest-set-time states, the command is
there to ease time synchronization after resume. If guest was
suspended for longer period of time, its system time can go off
so badly, that even NTP refuses to set it. That's why the command
was invented: to give users chance to set the time (not
necessarily 100% correct). However, there's is no real need for
us to require users to pass an arbitrary time. Especially if we
can read the correct value from RTC (boiling down to reading
host's time). Hence this commit enables logic:
guest-set-time() == guest-set-time($now_from_rtc)

When a VSS requester such as vshadow.exe or diskshadow.exe requests to
delete snapshots, qemu-ga VSS provider's DeleteSnapshots() is also called
and returns E_NOTIMPL, that makes the deletion fail.
To avoid this issue, return S_OK and set values that represent no snapshots
are deleted by qemu-ga VSS provider.

When a VSS requester such as vshadow.exe or diskshadow.exe requests to
create disk snapshots, Windows may choose qemu-ga VSS provider if it is
only provider registered on the system. However, because it provides only a
function to freeze the filesystem, the snapshotting fails.
This patch adds a check into CQGAVssProvider::IsVolumeSupported() to reject
the request from other VSS requesters, so that the other provider is chosen.
The check of requester is done by confirming event channels between
qemu-ga's requester and provider established. To ensure that the events are
initialized when CQGAVssProvider::IsVolumeSupported() is called, it moves
the initialization earlier.

whole-program analysis to figure that out. Unnecessarily hard for
optimizers, static checkers, and human readers. Dumb it down to
obvious.
Gets rid of several dozen Coverity false positives.
Note that the obvious form is already used in many places.

Currently, qemu-ga for Windows fails to execute guset-fsfreeze-freeze when
no user is logging in to Windows, with an error message:

To enable guest-fsfreeze-freeze/thaw without logging in users, this installs
a service to execute qemu-ga VSS provider COM+ application that has full

interface that contains CreateServiceForApplication() method in addition.

For now guest agent uses following command to shutdown system:
shutdown -P +0 "blabla"
but this syntax works only with shutdown command from systemd or upstart,
because SysV shutdown requires -h switch.
Following patch changes the command so it works with systemd, upstart and SysV
With upstart/systemd qga use one of thee commands, depending on 'mode' parameter:
shutdown -P +0 "..."
shutdown -H +0 "..."
shutdown -r +0 "..."
SysV equivalents for these are:
shutdown -h -P +0 "..."
shutdown -h -H +0 "..."
shutdown -h -r +0 "..."
and these retain their meaning with upstart/systemd.
According to FreeBSD manpages, shutdown does not accept -P and -H options. Commands should be:
shutdown -p +0 "..."
shutdown -h +0 "..."
shutdown -r +0 "..."
shutdown in Solaris does not accept any of -hHpPr and does not accept time in "+0" format

Now we have several qemu-ga commands not returning response on success.
It has been documented in qga/qapi-schema.json already. This patch exposes
the 'success-response' flag by extending 'guest-info' command. With this
change, the clients can handle the command response more flexibly.

In the original code, qmp_get_command_list is used to construct
a list of all commands' name. To get the information of all qga
commands, it traverses the name list and search the command info
with its name. So it can cause O(n^2) in the number of commands.
This patch adds an interface to traverse the qmp command list by
QmpCommand to replace qmp_get_command_list. It can decrease the
complexity from O(n^2) to O(n).

Currently, fsfreeze-freeze may cause deadlock if a guest has loopback mounts
of image files in its disk; e.g.:
# mount | grep ^/
/dev/vda1 / type ext4 (rw,noatime,seclabel,data=ordered)
/tmp/disk.img on /mnt type ext4 (rw,relatime,seclabel)
To avoid the deadlock, this freezes filesystems in reverse order of mounts.

Support guest-fsfreeze-freeze and guest-fsfreeze-thaw commands for Windows
guests. When fsfreeze command is issued, it calls the VSS requester to
freeze filesystems and applications. On thaw command, it again tells the VSS
requester to thaw them.
This also adds calling of initialize functions for the VSS requester.

Adds VSS provider and requester as a qga-vss.dll, which is loaded by
Windows VSS service as well as by qemu-ga.
"provider.cpp" implements a basic stub of a software VSS provider.
Currently, this module only relays a frozen event from VSS service to the
agent, and thaw event from the agent to VSS service, to block VSS process
to keep the system frozen while snapshots are taken at the host.
To register the provider to the guest system as COM+ application, the type
library (.tlb) for qga-vss.dll is required. To build it from COM IDL (.idl),
VisualC++, MIDL and stdole2.tlb in Windows SDK are required. This patch also
adds pre-compiled .tlb file in the repository in order to enable
cross-compile qemu-ga.exe for Windows with VSS support.
"requester.cpp" provides the VSS requester to kick the VSS snapshot process.
Qemu-ga.exe works without the DLL, although fsfreeze features are disabled.
These functions are only supported in Windows 2003 or later. In older
systems, fsfreeze features are disabled.
In several versions of Windows which don't support attribute
VSS_VOLSNAP_ATTR_NO_AUTORECOVERY, DoSnapshotSet fails with error
VSS_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND. In this patch, we just ignore this error.
To solve this fundamentally, we need a framework to handle mount writable
snapshot on guests, which is required by VSS auto-recovery feature
(cleanup phase after a snapshot is taken).

No effective change on POSIX, but on Win32 the defaults come from the
environment / session.
Since commit 39097daf ("qemu-ga: use key-value store to avoid recycling fd
handles after restart") we've relied on the state directory for the fd
handles' key-value store. Even though we don't support the guest-file-*
commands on win32 yet, the key-value store is written, and it's the first
use of the state directory on win32. We should have a sensible default for
its location.

The qemu guest agent creates a bunch of files with insecure permissions
when started in daemon mode. For example:
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root /var/log/qemu-ga.log
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root /var/run/qga.state
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root root /var/log/qga-fsfreeze-hook.log
In addition, at least all files created with the "guest-file-open" QMP
command, and all files created with shell output redirection (or
otherwise) by utilities invoked by the fsfreeze hook script are affected.
For now mask all file mode bits for "group" and "others" in
become_daemon().
Temporarily, for compatibility reasons, stick with the 0666 file-mode in
case of files newly created by the "guest-file-open" QMP call. Do so
without changing the umask temporarily.

These functions don't exist until glib version 2.26. QEMU is currently only
mandating glib 2.12.
This patch replaces the functions with g_key_file_get/set_integer.

Hosts hold on to handles provided by guest-file-open for periods that can
span beyond the life of the qemu-ga process that issued them. Since these
are issued starting from 0 on every restart, we run the risk of issuing
duplicate handles after restarts/reboots.
As a result, users with a stale copy of these handles may end up
reading/writing corrupted data due to their existing handles effectively
being re-assigned to an unexpected file or offset.
We unfortunately do not issue handles as strings, but as integers, so a
solution such as using UUIDs can't be implemented without introducing a
new interface.
As a workaround, we fix this by implementing a persistent key-value store
that will be used to track the value of the last handle that was issued
across restarts/reboots to avoid issuing duplicates.
The store is automatically written to the same directory we currently
set via --statedir to track fsfreeze state, and so should be applicable
for stable releases where this flag is supported.
A follow-up can use this same store for handling fsfreeze state, but
that change is cosmetic and left out for now.

We currently maintain a whitelist of commands that are safe during
fsfreeze. During fsfreeze, we disable all commands that aren't part of
that whitelist.
guest-sync-delimited meets the criteria for being whitelisted, and is
also required for qemu-ga clients that rely on guest-sync-delimited for
re-syncing the channel after a timeout.

To use the online disk snapshot for online-backup, application-level
consistency of the snapshot image is required. However, currently the
guest agent can provide only filesystem-level consistency, and the
snapshot may contain dirty data, for example, incomplete transactions.
This patch provides the opportunity to quiesce applications before
snapshot is taken.
If --fsfreeze-hook option is specified, the hook is executed with
"freeze" argument before the filesystem is frozen by fsfreeze-freeze
command. As for fsfreeze-thaw command, the hook is executed with "thaw"
argument after the filesystem is thawed.
