Make the handling of indentation in doc comments more sophisticated,
so that when we see a section like:
Notes: some text
some more text
indented line 3
we save it for the doc-comment processing code as:
some text
some more text
indented line 3
and when we see a section with the heading on its own line:
Notes:
some text
some more text
indented text
we also accept that and save it in the same form.
If we detect that the comment document text is not indented as much
as we expect it to be, we throw a parse error. (We don't complain
about over-indented sections, because for rST this can be legitimate
markup.)
The golden reference for the doc comment text is updated to remove
the two 'wrong' indents; these now form a test case that we correctly
stripped leading whitespace from an indented multi-line argument
definition.
We update the documentation in docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.txt to
describe the new indentation rules.

Users should use device_add command instead. To get list of

clang's C11 atomic_fetch_*() functions only take a C11 atomic type
pointer argument. QEMU uses direct types (int, etc) and this causes a
compiler error when a QEMU code calls these functions in a source file
that also included <stdatomic.h> via a system header file:

Avoid using atomic_*() names in QEMU's atomic.h since that namespace is
used by <stdatomic.h>. Prefix QEMU's APIs with 'q' so that atomic.h
and <stdatomic.h> can co-exist. I checked /usr/include on my machine and
searched GitHub for existing "qatomic_" users but there seem to be none.
This patch was generated using:

The sentence explaining the deprecation schedule is ambiguous. Make it
clear that a feature deprecated in the Nth release is guaranteed to
remain available in the N+1th release. Removal can occur in the N+2nd
release or later.
As an example of this in action, see commit
25956af3fe ("block: Finish deprecation of
'qemu-img convert -n -o'"). The feature was deprecated in QEMU 4.2.0. It
was present in the 5.0.0 release and removed in the 5.1.0 release.

Hyper-V TLFS prior to version 6.0 had a mistake in it: special value
'0xffffffff' for CPUID 0x40000004.EBX was called 'never to retry', this
looked weird (like why it's not '0' which supposedly have the same effect?)
but nobody raised the question. In TLFS version 6.0 the mistake was
corrected to 'never notify' which sounds logical. Fix QEMU accordingly.

"inline markup is recognized and there is no protection from parsing.
Backslash-escapes may be necessary to prevent unintended parsing".
The qemu(1) manual page (formatted with Sphinx 2.2.2) has several overlong
lines on my system. A stand-alone backslash at EOL serves as line
continuation in a "parsed-literal" block. Therefore, escape the
backslashes that we want to appear as such in the formatted documentation.

Deprecate our lm32 target support. Michael Walle (former lm32 maintainer)
suggested that we do this in 2019:

because the only public user of the architecture is the many-years-dead
milkymist project. (The Linux port to lm32 was never merged upstream.)
In commit 4b4d96c776 (March 2020) we marked it as 'orphan' in
the MAINTAINERS file, but didn't officially deprecate it. Mark it
deprecated now, with the intention of removing it from QEMU in
mid-2021 before the 6.1 release.

Implement a model of the MPS2 with the AN500 firmware. This is
similar to the AN385, with the following differences:
* Cortex-M7 CPU
* PSRAM is at 0x6000_0000
* Ethernet is at 0xa000_0000
* No zbt_boot_ctrl remapping of the low 16K
(but QEMU doesn't implement this anyway)
* no "block RAM" at 0x01000000

We deprecated the support for KVM on 32-bit Arm hosts in time
for release 5.0, which means that our deprecation policy allows
us to drop it in release 5.2. Remove the code.
To repeat the rationale from the deprecation note: the Linux
kernel dropped support for 32-bit Arm KVM hosts in 5.7.
Running 32-bit guests on a 64-bit Arm host remains supported.

We have an exploding complexity problem in the testing so lets just
move the more involved plugins into contrib. tests/plugins still exist
for the basic plugins that exercise the API. We restore the old
pre-meson style Makefile for contrib as it also doubles as a guide for
out-of-tree plugin builds.
While we are at it add some examples to the documentation and a
specific plugins build target.

Commit 480324ec8d "docs/qdev-device-use: Clean up the sentences
related to -usbdevice" deleted the information on syntax that no
longer works. Unfortunately, the resulting text suggests you can
configure USB block devices with -drive, and USB network devices with
-net, which is misleading.
Instead of rephrasing the now misleading text, I'm putting the
information back, and just make clear it's about old versions of QEMU.

Currently QAPI generates a type and function for free'ing it:

Since bumping the min glib to 2.48, QEMU has incrementally adopted the
use of g_auto/g_autoptr. This allows the compiler to run a function to
free a variable when it goes out of scope, the benefit being the
compiler can guarantee it is freed in all possible code ptahs.
This benefit is applicable to QAPI types too, and given the seriously
long method names for some qapi_free_XXXX() functions, is much less
typing. This change thus makes the code generator emit:

Note, if the local pointer needs to live beyond the scope holding the

We do not need to ask cmake for the dependencies, so just use the
pkg-config mechanism. Keep "auto" for SDL so that it tries using
sdl-config too.
The documentation is adjusted to use SDL2_image as the example,
rather than SDL which does not use the "pkg-config" method.

When cross-compiling, by default qemu_docdir is 'c:\Program Files\QEMU\'
which is not recognized as being an absolute path, and meson will end up
adding the prefix again.
Add an option to pass docdir location to meson, pre-prefixed like we do
with other directories, build qemu_docdir with the common suffix and use
that instead of config_host['qemu_docdir'].

This patch adds an autoscan to let u2f-passthru choose the first U2F
device it finds.
The autoscan is performed using libudev with an enumeration of all the
hidraw devices present on the host.
The first device which happens to be a U2F device is taken to do the
passtru.

Right now we enable remote posix locks by default. That means when guest
does a posix lock it sends request to server (virtiofsd). But currently
we only support non-blocking posix lock and return -EOPNOTSUPP for
blocking version.
This means that existing applications which are doing blocking posix
locks get -EOPNOTSUPP and fail. To avoid this, people have been
running virtiosd with option "-o no_posix_lock". For new users it
is still a surprise and trial and error takes them to this option.
Given posix lock implementation is not complete in virtiofsd, disable
it by default. This means that posix locks will work with-in applications
in a guest but not across guests. Anyway we don't support sharing
filesystem among different guests yet in virtiofs so this should
not lead to any kind of surprise or regression and will make life
little easier for virtiofs users.

For now, sphinx is run on every invocation of make. The previous mechanism
using $(wildcard) is not reproducible in Meson and was also brittle; for
example some .rst.inc files were left out. The next patch will introduce
a Sphinx extension to emit a depfile.

This shows how to do some "computations" in meson.build using its array
and dictionary data structures, and also a basic usage of the sourceset
module for conditional compilation.
Notice the new "if have_system" part of util/meson.build, which fixes
a bug in the old build system was buggy: util/dbus.c was built even for
non-softmmu builds, but the dependency on -lgio was lost when the linking
was done through libqemuutil.a. Because all of its users required gio
otherwise, the bug was hidden. Meson instead propagates libqemuutil's
dependencies down to its users, and shows the problem.

When starting an L2 KVM guest with `ic-mode=dual,kernel-irqchip=on`,
QEMU fails with:
KVM is too old to support ic-mode=dual,kernel-irqchip=on
This error message was introduced to detect older KVM versions that
didn't allow destruction and re-creation of the XICS KVM device that
we do at reboot. But it is actually the same issue that we get with
nested guests : when running under pseries, KVM currently provides
a genuine XICS device (not the XICS-on-XIVE device that we get
under powernv) which doesn't support destruction/re-creation.
This will eventually be fixed in KVM but in the meantime, update
the error message and documentation to mention the nested case.
While here, mention that in "No XIVE support in KVM" section that
this can also happen with "guest OSes supporting XIVE" since
we check this at init time before starting the guest.

This patch adds a new documentation file, ppc-spapr-numa.rst,
informing what developers and user can expect of the NUMA distance
support for the pseries machine, up to QEMU 5.1.
In the (hopefully soon) future, when we rework the NUMA mechanics
of the pseries machine to at least attempt to contemplate user
choice, this doc will be extended to inform about the new
support.

The various schemas included in QEMU use a JSON-based format which
is, however, strictly speaking not valid JSON.
As a consequence, when vim tries to apply syntax highlight rules
for JSON (as guessed from the file name), the result is an unreadable
mess which mostly consist of red markers pointing out supposed errors
in, well, pretty much everything.
Using Python syntax highlighting produces much better results, and
in fact these files already start with specially-formatted comments
that instruct Emacs to process them as if they were Python files.
This commit adds the equivalent special comments for vim.

Creating an image that requires format probing of the backing image is
potentially unsafe (we've had several CVEs over the years based on
probes leaking information to the guest on a subsequent boot, although
these days tools like libvirt are aware of the issue enough to prevent
the worst effects). For example, if our probing algorithm ever
changes, or if other tools like libvirt determine a different probe
result than we do, then subsequent use of that backing file under a
different format will present corrupted data to the guest.
Fortunately, the worst effects occur only when the backing image is
originally raw, and we at least prevent commit into a probed raw
backing file that would change its probed type.
Still, it is worth starting a deprecation clock so that future
qemu-img can refuse to create backing chains that would rely on
probing, to encourage clients to avoid unsafe practices. Most
warnings are intentionally emitted from bdrv_img_create() in the block
layer, but qemu-img convert uses bdrv_create() which cannot emit its
own warning without causing spurious warnings on other code paths. In
the end, all command-line image creation or backing file rewriting now
performs a check.
Furthermore, if we probe a backing file as non-raw, then it is safe to
explicitly record that result (rather than relying on future probes);
only where we probe a raw image do we care about further warnings to
the user when using such an image (for example, commits into a
probed-raw backing file are prevented), to help them improve their
tooling. But whether or not we make the probe results explicit, we
still warn the user to remind them to upgrade their workflow to supply
-F always.
iotest 114 specifically wants to create an unsafe image for later
amendment rather than defaulting to our new default of recording a
probed format, so it needs an update. While touching it, expand it to
cover all of the various warnings enabled by this patch. iotest 301
also shows a change to qcow messages.

The use of 'qemu-img amend' to change qcow2 backing files is not
tested very well. In particular, our implementation has a bug where
if a new backing file is provided without a format, then the prior
format is blindly reused, even if this results in data corruption, but
this is not caught by iotests.
There are also situations where amending other options needs access to
the original backing file (for example, on a downgrade to a v2 image,
knowing whether a v3 zero cluster must be allocated or may be left
unallocated depends on knowing whether the backing file already reads
as zero), but the command line does not have a nice way to tell us
both the backing file to use for opening the image as well as the
backing file to install after the operation is complete.
Even if we do allow changing the backing file, it is redundant with
the existing ability to change backing files via 'qemu-img rebase -u'.
It is time to deprecate this support (leaving the existing behavior
intact, even if it is buggy), and at a point in the future, require
the use of only 'qemu-img rebase' for adjusting backing chain
relations, saving 'qemu-img amend' for changes unrelated to the
backing chain.

Back in commit 6e6e55f5 (Jul 2017, v2.10), we tweaked the code to warn
if the backing file could not be opened but the user gave a size,
unless the user also passes the -u option to bypass the open of the
backing file. As one common reason for failure to open the backing
file is when there is mismatch in the requested backing format in
relation to what the backing file actually contains, we actually want
to open the backing file and ensure that it has the right format in as
many cases as possible. iotest 301 for qcow demonstrates how
detecting explicit format mismatch is useful to prevent the creation
of an image that would probe differently than the user requested. Now
is the time to finally turn the warning an error, as promised.
Note that the original warning was added prior to our documentation of
an official deprecation policy (eb22aeca, also Jul 2017), and because
the warning didn't mention the word "deprecated", we never actually
remembered to document it as such. But the warning has been around
long enough that I don't see prolonging it another two releases.

There is some additional information about the 3270 support in our Wiki
at https://wiki.qemu.org/Features/3270 - so let's include this information
into the main documentation now to have one single source of information
(the Wiki page could later be removed).
While at it, I also shortened the lines of the first example a little bit.
Otherwise they showed up with a horizontal scrollbar in my Firefox browser.

Fix typo - the option is called "--fuzz-target" and not "--fuzz_taget".
Also use a different fuzzer in the example, since "virtio-net-fork-fuzz"
does not seem to be a valid fuzzer target (anymore?).
