c891c24b1a os-posix: asynchronous teardown for shutdown on Linux
This patch adds support for asynchronously tearing down a VM on Linux.

When qemu terminates, either naturally or because of a fatal signal,
the VM is torn down. If the VM is huge, it can take a considerable
amount of time for it to be cleaned up. In case of a protected VM, it
might take even longer than a non-protected VM (this is the case on
s390x, for example).

Some users might want to shut down a VM and restart it immediately,
without having to wait. This is especially true if management
infrastructure like libvirt is used.

This patch implements a simple trick on Linux to allow qemu to return
immediately, with the teardown of the VM being performed
asynchronously.

If the new commandline option -async-teardown is used, a new process is
spawned from qemu at startup, using the clone syscall, in such way that
it will share its address space with qemu. The new process will have the
name "cleanup/<QEMU_PID>". It will wait until qemu terminates
completely, and then it will exit itself.

This allows qemu to terminate quickly, without having to wait for the
whole address space to be torn down. The cleanup process will exit
after qemu, so it will be the last user of the address space, and
therefore it will take care of the actual teardown. The cleanup
process will share the same cgroups as qemu, so both memory usage and
cpu time will be accounted properly.

If possible, close_range will be used in the cleanup process to close
all open file descriptors. If it is not available or if it fails, /proc
will be used to determine which file descriptors to close.

If the cleanup process is forcefully killed with SIGKILL before the
main qemu process has terminated completely, the mechanism is defeated
and the teardown will not be asynchronous.

This feature can already be used with libvirt by adding the following
to the XML domain definition to pass the parameter to qemu directly:

  <commandline xmlns="http://libvirt.org/schemas/domain/qemu/1.0">
  <arg value='-async-teardown'/>
  </commandline>

7845e73147 block/io_uring: revert "Use io_uring_register_ring_fd() to skip fd operations"
Resolves: https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/1193

The commit "Use io_uring_register_ring_fd() to skip fd operations" broke
when booting a guest with iothread and io_uring. That is because the
io_uring_register_ring_fd() call is made from the main thread instead of
IOThread where io_uring_submit() is called. It can not be guaranteed
to register the ring fd in the correct thread or unregister the same ring
fd if the IOThread is disabled. This optimization is not critical so we
will revert previous commit.

This reverts commit e2848bc574
and 77e3f038af.

enabled or not active yet.

So let's add a way to configure CPU pinning via
qemu_thread_set_affinity() and obtain CPU affinity via
qemu_thread_get_affinity() and implement them under POSIX using
pthread_setaffinity_np() + pthread_getaffinity_np().

Implementation under Windows is possible using SetProcessAffinityMask()
+ GetProcessAffinityMask(), however, that is left as future work.

fd66dbd424 blkio: add libblkio block driver
libblkio (https://gitlab.com/libblkio/libblkio/) is a library for
high-performance disk I/O. It currently supports io_uring,
virtio-blk-vhost-user, and virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa with additional drivers
under development.

One of the reasons for developing libblkio is that other applications
besides QEMU can use it. This will be particularly useful for
virtio-blk-vhost-user which applications may wish to use for connecting
to qemu-storage-daemon.

libblkio also gives us an opportunity to develop in Rust behind a C API
that is easy to consume from QEMU.

This commit adds io_uring, nvme-io_uring, virtio-blk-vhost-user, and
virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa BlockDrivers to QEMU using libblkio. It will be
easy to add other libblkio drivers since they will share the majority of
code.

For now I/O buffers are copied through bounce buffers if the libblkio
driver requires it. Later commits add an optimization for
pre-registering guest RAM to avoid bounce buffers.

The syntax is:

  --blockdev io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=test.img,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on|off

  --blockdev nvme-io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=/dev/ng0n1,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on

  --blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa,node-name=drive0,path=/dev/vdpa...,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on

  --blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-user,node-name=drive0,path=vhost-user-blk.sock,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on

73422d9524 seccomp: Get actual errno value from failed seccomp functions
Upon failure, a libseccomp API returns actual errno value very
rarely. Fortunately, after its commit 34bf78ab (contained in
2.5.0 release), the SCMP_FLTATR_API_SYSRAWRC attribute can be set
which makes subsequent APIs return true errno on failure.

This is especially critical when seccomp_load() fails, because

The test is slightly weaker than before, because it does not

5890258aee Remove the slirp submodule (i.e. compile only with an external libslirp)
Since QEMU 7.1 we don't support Ubuntu 18.04 anymore, so the last big
important Linux distro that did not have a pre-packaged libslirp has
been dismissed. All other major distros seem to have a libslirp package
in their distribution already - according to repology.org:

          Fedora 35: 4.6.1
  CentOS 8 (RHEL-8): 4.4.0
          Debian 11: 4.4.0
 OpenSUSE Leap 15.3: 4.3.1
   Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 4.1.0
      FreeBSD Ports: 4.7.0
      NetBSD pkgsrc: 4.7.0
           Homebrew: 4.7.0
        MSYS2 mingw: 4.7.0

The only one that was still missing a libslirp package is OpenBSD - but
the next version (OpenBSD 7.2 which will be shipped in October) is going
to include a libslirp package. Since QEMU 7.2 will be published after
OpenBSD 7.2, we should be fine there, too.

So there is no real urgent need for keeping the slirp submodule in
the QEMU tree anymore. Thus let's drop the slirp submodule now and
rely on the libslirp packages from the distributions instead.

d409373b9d util/qemu-sockets: Enable unix socket support on Windows
Support for the unix socket has existed both in BSD and Linux for the
longest time, but not on Windows. Since Windows 10 build 17063 [1],
the native support for the unix socket has come to Windows. Starting
this build, two Win32 processes can use the AF_UNIX address family
over Winsock API to communicate with each other.

3cd3df2a95 linux-user: fix compat with glibc >= 2.36 sys/mount.h
The latest glibc 2.36 has extended sys/mount.h so that it
defines the FSCONFIG_* enum constants. These are historically
defined in linux/mount.h, and thus if you include both headers
the compiler complains:

In file included from /usr/include/linux/fs.h:19,
                 from ../linux-user/syscall.c:98:
/usr/include/linux/mount.h:95:6: error: redeclaration of 'enum fsconfig_command'
   95 | enum fsconfig_command {
      | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In file included from ../linux-user/syscall.c:31:
/usr/include/sys/mount.h:189:6: note: originally defined here
  189 | enum fsconfig_command
      | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
/usr/include/linux/mount.h:96:9: error: redeclaration of enumerator 'FSCONFIG_SET_FLAG'
   96 | FSCONFIG_SET_FLAG = 0, /* Set parameter, supplying no value */
      | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
/usr/include/sys/mount.h:191:3: note: previous definition of 'FSCONFIG_SET_FLAG' with type 'enum fsconfig_command'
  191 | FSCONFIG_SET_FLAG = 0, /* Set parameter, supplying no value */
      | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...snip...

QEMU doesn't include linux/mount.h, but it does use
linux/fs.h and thus gets linux/mount.h indirectly.

glibc acknowledges this problem but does not appear to
be intending to fix it in the forseeable future, simply
documenting it as a known incompatibility with no
workaround:

  https://sourceware.org/glibc/wiki/Release/2.36#Usage_of_.3Clinux.2Fmount.h.3E_and_.3Csys.2Fmount.h.3E
  https://sourceware.org/glibc/wiki/Synchronizing_Headers

To address this requires either removing use of sys/mount.h
or linux/fs.h, despite QEMU needing declarations from
both.

This patch removes linux/fs.h, meaning we have to define
various FS_IOC constants that are now unavailable.

cf60ccc330 cutils: Introduce bundle mechanism
Developers often run QEMU without installing. The bundle mechanism
allows to look up files which should be present in installation even in
such a situation.

It is a general mechanism and can find any files in the installation
tree. The build tree will have a new directory, qemu-bundle, to
represent what files the installation tree would have for reference by
the executables.

Note that it abandons compatibility with Windows older than 8. The
extended support for the prior version, 7 ended more than 2 years ago,
and it is unlikely that someone would like to run the latest QEMU on
such an old system.

d2bfbdf316 audio/dbus: fix building
Commit c9c847481 broken dbus audio module compilation with bad

The problem was that 'dbus_display' is not correctly automatically set

1ec8c2c01e meson.build: Require a recent version of libpng
According to https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/1080#note_998088246
QEMU does not compile with older versions of libpng, so we should check
for a good version in meson.build. According to repology.org, our supported
host target operating systems ship these versions:

             Fedora 35: 1.6.37
     CentOS 8 (RHEL-8): 1.6.34
             Debian 11: 1.6.37
    OpenSUSE Leap 15.3: 1.6.34
      Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 1.6.37
         FreeBSD Ports: 1.6.37
         NetBSD pkgsrc: 1.6.37
         OpenBSD Ports: 1.6.37
              Homebrew: 1.6.37
           MSYS2 mingw: 1.6.37

So it seem reasonable to require at least libpng version 1.6.34 for
our builds.

2a2359b844 vduse-blk: Implement vduse-blk export
This implements a VDUSE block backends based on
the libvduse library. We can use it to export the BDSs

The new command-line syntax is:

$ qemu-storage-daemon \
    --blockdev file,node-name=drive0,filename=test.img \
    --export vduse-blk,node-name=drive0,id=vduse-export0,writable=on

After the qemu-storage-daemon started, we need to use
the "vdpa" command to attach the device to vDPA bus:

$ vdpa dev add name vduse-export0 mgmtdev vduse

Also the device must be removed via the "vdpa" command
before we stop the qemu-storage-daemon.

e2848bc574 Use io_uring_register_ring_fd() to skip fd operations
Linux recently added a new io_uring(7) optimization API that QEMU
doesn't take advantage of yet. The liburing library that QEMU uses
has added a corresponding new API calling io_uring_register_ring_fd().
When this API is called after creating the ring, the io_uring_submit()
library function passes a flag to the io_uring_enter(2) syscall
allowing it to skip the ring file descriptor fdget()/fdput()
operations. This saves some CPU cycles.

aa4f3a3b88 build: fix check for -fsanitize-coverage-allowlist
The existing check has two problems:
1. Meson uses a private directory for the get_supported_arguments check.
./instrumentation-filter does not exist in that private directory (it is
copied into the root of the build-directory).

2. fsanitize-coverage-allowlist is unused when coverage instrumentation
is not configured. No instrumentation are passed for the
get_supported_arguments check

Thus the check always fails. To work around this, change the check to an
"if cc.compiles" check and provide /dev/null, instead of the real
filter.

43ecd16678 capstone: Allow version 3.0.5 again
According to

 https://lore.kernel.org/qemu-devel/20200921174118.39352-1-richard.henderson@linaro.org/

there was an issue with Capstone 3.0.4 from Ubuntu 18, which was the reason
for bumping our minimum Capstone requirement to version 4.0. And indeed,
compiling with that version 3.0.4 from Ubuntu 18.04 still fails (after
allowing it with a hack in meson.build). But now that we've dropped support
for Ubuntu 18.04, that issue is not relevant anymore. Compiling with Capstone
version 3.0.5 (e.g. used in Ubuntu 20.04) seems to work fine, so let's allow
that version again.

70ac26b9e5 util/main-loop: Introduce the main loop into QOM
'event-loop-base' provides basic property handling for all 'AioContext'
based event loops. So let's define a new 'MainLoopClass' that inherits
from it. This will permit tweaking the main loop's properties through
qapi as well as through the command line using the '-object' keyword[1].
Only one instance of 'MainLoopClass' might be created at any time.

'EventLoopBaseClass' learns a new callback, 'can_be_deleted()' so as to
mark 'MainLoop' as non-deletable.

7d5983e3c8 Introduce event-loop-base abstract class
Introduce the 'event-loop-base' abstract class, it'll hold the
properties common to all event loops and provide the necessary hooks for
their creation and maintenance. Then have iothread inherit from it.

EventLoopBaseClass is defined as user creatable and provides a hook for
its children to attach themselves to the user creatable class 'complete'
function. It also provides an update_params() callback to propagate
property changes onto its children.

The new 'event-loop-base' class will live in the root directory. It is
built on its own using the 'link_whole' option (there are no direct
function dependencies between the class and its children, it all happens
trough 'constructor' magic). And also imposes new compilation
dependencies:

    qom <- event-loop-base <- blockdev (iothread.c)

And in subsequent patches:

    qom <- event-loop-base <- qemuutil (util/main-loop.c)

All this forced some amount of reordering in meson.build:

 - Moved qom build definition before qemuutil. Doing it the other way
around (i.e. moving qemuutil after qom) isn't possible as a lot of
core libraries that live in between the two depend on it.

 - Process the 'hw' subdir earlier, as it introduces files into the
   'qom' source set.

No functional changes intended.

59e35c7b65 qga/commands-posix: Use getifaddrs when available
Currently, commands-posix.c assumes that getifaddrs() is only
available on Linux, and so the related guest agent command
guest-network-get-interfaces is only implemented for #ifdef __linux__.
This function does exist on other platforms, though, such as Solaris.
So, add a meson check for getifaddrs(), and move the code for
guest-network-get-interfaces to be built whenever getifaddrs() is
available.

The implementation for guest-network-get-interfaces still has some
Linux-specific code, which is not fixed in this commit. This commit
moves the relevant big chunks of code around without changing them, so
a future commit can change the code in place.

f9fc8932b1 thread-posix: remove the posix semaphore support
POSIX specifies an absolute time for sem_timedwait(), it would be
affected if the system time is changing, but there is not a relative
time or monotonic clock version of sem_timedwait, so we cannot gain
from POSIX semaphore any more.

An alternative way is to use sem_trywait + usleep, maybe we can
remove CONFIG_SEM_TIMEDWAIT in this way? No, because some systems
(e.g. mac os) mark the sem_xxx API as deprecated.

So maybe remove the usage of POSIX semaphore and turn to use the
pthread variant for all systems looks better.

Since its introduction in Linux in 2013, AF_VSOCK came with

We could even go back to the initial configure-less approach

with the other test suites. This has the disadvantage of not getting
the detailed progress indication there anymore, but since that was
only working right in single-threaded "make -j1" mode anyway, it's
not a huge loss right now.

8900c204df util/osdep: Avoid madvise proto on modern Solaris
On older Solaris releases (before Solaris 11), we didn't get a
prototype for madvise, and so util/osdep.c provides its own prototype.
Some time between the public Solaris 11.4 release and Solaris 11.4.42
CBE, we started getting an madvise prototype that looks like this:

    extern int madvise(void *, size_t, int);

which conflicts with the prototype in util/osdeps.c. Instead of always
declaring this prototype, check if we're missing the madvise()
prototype, and only declare it ourselves if the prototype is missing.
Move the prototype to include/qemu/osdep.h, the normal place to handle
platform-specific header quirks.

The 'missing_madvise_proto' meson check contains an obviously wrong
prototype for madvise. So if that code compiles and links, we must be
missing the actual prototype for madvise.

88454f844e util: Use meson checks for valloc() and memalign() presence
Instead of assuming that all CONFIG_BSD have valloc() and anything
else is memalign(), explicitly check for those functions in
meson.build and use the "is the function present" define. Tests for
specific functionality are better than which-OS checks; this also
lets us give a helpful error message if somehow there's no usable

__builtin_posix_memalign when there isn't a builtin of that name
 * meson will assume that if you have a __builtin_foo that
   counts for has_function('foo')

Specifying a specific include file via prefix: causes meson to not
treat builtins as sufficient and actually look for the function
itself; see this meson pull request which added that as the official
way to get the right answer:
  https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/pull/1150

Currently this misdectection doesn't cause problems because we only
use CONFIG_POSIX_MEMALIGN in oslib-posix.c; however that will change
in a following commit.

0fb1e19d78 9p: darwin: meson: Allow VirtFS on Darwin
To allow VirtFS on darwin, we need to check that pthread_fchdir_np is
available, which has only been available since macOS 10.12.

Additionally, virtfs_proxy_helper is disabled on Darwin. This patch
series does not currently provide an implementation of the proxy-helper,

029ed1bd9d 9p: darwin: Implement compatibility for mknodat
Darwin does not support mknodat. However, to avoid race conditions
with later setting the permissions, we must avoid using mknod on
the full path instead. We could try to fchdir, but that would cause
problems if multiple threads try to call mknodat at the same time.
However, luckily there is a solution: Darwin includes a function
that sets the cwd for the current thread only.
This should suffice to use mknod safely.

This function (pthread_fchdir_np) is protected by a check in
meson in a patch later in this series.

4ce7a08d3e virtiofsd: Let meson check for statx.stx_mnt_id
In virtiofsd, we assume that the presence of the STATX_MNT_ID macro
implies existence of the statx.stx_mnt_id field. Unfortunately, that is
not necessarily the case: glibc has introduced the macro in its commit
88a2cf6c4bab6e94a65e9c0db8813709372e9180, but the statx.stx_mnt_id field
is still missing from its own headers.

Let meson.build actually chek for both STATX_MNT_ID and
statx.stx_mnt_id, and set CONFIG_STATX_MNT_ID if both are present.
Then, use this config macro in virtiofsd.

a436d6d412 meson: use .require() and .disable_auto_if() method for features
The method is now in 0.59, using it simplifies some conditionals.

There is a small change, which is to build virtfs-proxy-helper in a
tools-only build. This is done for consistency with other tools,
which are not culled by the absence of system emulator binaries.

.disable_auto_if() would also be useful to check for packages,
for example

-linux_io_uring = not_found
-if not get_option('linux_io_uring').auto() or have_block
- linux_io_uring = dependency('liburing', required: get_option('linux_io_uring'),
- method: 'pkg-config', kwargs: static_kwargs)
-endif
+linux_io_uring = dependency('liburing',
+ required: get_option('linux_io_uring').disable_auto_if(not have_block),
+ method: 'pkg-config', kwargs: static_kwargs)

This change however is much larger and I am not sure about the improved
readability, so I am not performing it right now.

98487b9035 build: make check-block a meson test
"meson test" can be asked to run tests verbosely; this makes it usable
also for qemu-iotests's own harness, and it lets "make check-block"
reuse mtest2make.py's infrastructure to find and build test dependencies.

Adjust check-block.sh to use the standard exit code that reports a test
as skipped. Alternatively, in the future we could make it produce TAP
output, which is consistent with all other "make check" tests.

a5730b8bd3 block/file-posix: Simplify the XFS_IOC_DIOINFO handling
The handling for the XFS_IOC_DIOINFO ioctl is currently quite excessive:
This is not a "real" feature like the other features that we provide with
the "--enable-xxx" and "--disable-xxx" switches for the configure script,
since this does not influence lots of code (it's only about one call to
xfsctl() in file-posix.c), so people don't gain much with the ability to
disable this with "--disable-xfsctl".
It's also unfortunate that the ioctl will be disabled on Linux in case
the user did not install the right xfsprogs-devel package before running
configure. Thus let's simplify this by providing the ioctl definition
on our own, so we can completely get rid of the header dependency and
thus the related code in the configure script.

9d24fb73a1 meson: cleanup common-user/ build
It is not necessary to have a separate static_library just for common_user
files; using the one that already covers the rest of common_ss is enough
unless you need to reuse some source files between emulators and tests.
Just place common files for all user-mode emulators in common_ss,
similar to what is already done for softmmu_ss in full system emulators.

The only disadvantage is that the include_directories under bsd-user/include/
and linux-user/include/ are now enabled for all targets rather than only
user mode emulators. This however is not different from how include/sysemu/
is available when building user mode emulators.

"meson test" starting with version 0.57 is just as capable and easy to

work.  The only required code change involves how to mark "slow" tests;
they need to belong to an additional "slow" suite.

The rules for .tap output are replaced by JUnit XML; GitLab is able

142ca628a7 ui: add a D-Bus display backend
The "dbus" display backend exports the QEMU consoles and other

By default, the connection is established on the session bus, but you

The backend takes the "org.qemu" service name, while still allowing

clients, or only accept p2p via fd passing.

The interface is intentionally very close to the internal QEMU API,
and can be introspected or interacted with busctl/dfeet etc:

For QEMU, this fixes the handling of TYPE_OLDDEVT in

c94c239496 meson.build: Merge riscv32 and riscv64 cpu family

3d212b41e9 nbd/server: Add --selinux-label option
Under SELinux, Unix domain sockets have two labels. One is on the
disk and can be set with commands such as chcon(1). There is a
different label stored in memory (called the process label). This can
only be set by the process creating the socket. When using SELinux +
SVirt and wanting qemu to be able to connect to a qemu-nbd instance,
you must set both labels correctly first.

For qemu-nbd the options to set the second label are awkward. You can
create the socket in a wrapper program and then exec into qemu-nbd.
Or you could try something with LD_PRELOAD.

This commit adds the ability to set the label straightforwardly on the
command line, via the new --selinux-label flag. (The name of the flag
is the same as the equivalent nbdkit option.)

A worked example showing how to use the new option can be found in
this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1984938

6a23f8190f meson: fix botched compile check conversions
Fix a bunch of incorrect conversions from configure to Meson, which result
in different outcomes with --extra-cflags=-Werror.

pthread_setname_np needs "#define _GNU_SOURCE" on Linux (which I am using
also for the non-Linux check, so that it correctly fails with an error
about having too few parameters).

Fix struct checks to use has_type instead of has_symbol, and "#define
_GNU_SOURCE" too in the case of struct mmsghdr.

Remove an apostrophe that ended up at the end of a #include line.
