Introduce the cpu_virtio_is_big_endian() generic helper to avoid
calling CPUClass internal virtio_is_big_endian() one.
Similarly to commit bf7663c4bd ("cpu: introduce
CPUClass::virtio_is_big_endian()"), we keep 'virtio' in the method
name to hint this handler shouldn't be called anywhere but from the
virtio code.

Ram block notifiers are currently not aware of resizes. To properly
handle resizes during migration, we want to teach ram block notifiers about
resizeable ram.
Introduce the basic infrastructure but keep using max_size in the
existing notifiers. Supply the max_size when adding and removing ram
blocks. Also, notify on resizes.

Factor it out into common code when a new notifier is registered, just
as done with the memory region notifier. This keeps logic about how to
process existing ram blocks at a central place.
Just like when adding a new ram block, we have to register the max_length.
Ram blocks are only "fake resized". All memory (max_length) is mapped.
Print the warning from inside qemu_vfio_ram_block_added().

Currently the gpex PCI controller implements no special behaviour for
guest accesses to areas of the PIO and MMIO where it has not mapped
any PCI devices, which means that for Arm you end up with a CPU
exception due to a data abort.
Most host OSes expect "like an x86 PC" behaviour, where bad accesses
like this return -1 for reads and ignore writes. In the interests of
not being surprising, make host CPU accesses to these windows behave
as -1/discard where there's no mapped PCI device.
The old behaviour generally didn't cause any problems, because
almost always the guest OS will map the PCI devices and then only
access where it has mapped them. One corner case where you will see
this kind of access is if Linux attempts to probe legacy ISA
devices via a PIO window access. So far the only case where we've
seen this has been via the syzkaller fuzzer.

Commit 4c70875372 ("pci: advertise a page aligned ATS") advertises
the page aligned via ATS capability (RO) to unbrek recent Linux IOMMU
drivers since 5.2. But it forgot the compat the capability which

Provide a new function dynamic_sysbus_dev_allowed() which checks the
per-machine list of permitted dynamic sysbus devices and returns a
boolean result indicating whether the device is allowed. We can use
this in the implementation of validate_sysbus_device(), but we will
also need it so that machine hotplug callbacks can validate devices
rather than assuming that any sysbus device might be hotpluggable
into the platform bus.

For accesses to rom blob data before or during reset, we have a
function rom_ptr() which looks for a rom blob that would be loaded to
the specified address, and returns a pointer into the rom blob data
corresponding to that address. This allows board or CPU code to say
"what is the data that is going to be loaded to this address?".
However, this function does not take account of memory region
aliases. If for instance a machine model has RAM at address
0x0000_0000 which is aliased to also appear at 0x1000_0000, a
rom_ptr() query for address 0x0000_0000 will only return a match if
the guest image provided by the user was loaded at 0x0000_0000 and
not if it was loaded at 0x1000_0000, even though they are the same
RAM and a run-time guest CPU read of 0x0000_0000 will read the data
loaded to 0x1000_0000.
Provide a new function rom_ptr_for_as() which takes an AddressSpace
argument, so that it can check whether the MemoryRegion corresponding
to the address is also mapped anywhere else in the AddressSpace and
look for rom blobs that loaded to that alias.

A clock is added by commit aac63e0e6e ("hw/char/pl011: add a clock
input") since v5.2.0 which corresponds to virt-5.2 machine type. It
causes backwards migration failure from upstream to downstream (v5.1.0)
when the machine type is specified with virt-5.1.
This fixes the issue by following instructions from section "Connecting
subsections to properties" in docs/devel/migration.rst. With this applied,
the PL011 clock is migrated based on the machine type.

Report the configured granularity for discard operation to the

Currently, the default msix vectors for virtio-net-pci is 3 which is
obvious not suitable for multiqueue guest, so we depends on the user
or management tools to pass a correct vectors parameter. In fact, we
can simplifying this by calculating the number of vectors on realize.
Consider we have N queues, the number of vectors needed is 2*N + 2
(#queue pairs + plus one config interrupt and control vq). We didn't
check whether or not host support control vq because it was added
unconditionally by qemu to avoid breaking legacy guests such as Minix.

Hypervisors, especially type-1 ones, need the firmware/bootcode to put
their initial guest somewhere in memory and pass the information to it
via platform data. The guest-loader is modelled after the generic
loader for exactly this sort of purpose:

The Clock framework allows users to specify a callback which is
called after the clock's period has been updated. Some users need to
also have a callback which is called before the clock period is
updated.
As the first step in adding support for notifying Clock users on
pre-update events, add an argument to the ClockCallback to specify
what event is being notified, and add an argument to the various
functions for registering a callback to specify which events are
of interest to that callback.
Note that the documentation update renders correct the previously
incorrect claim in 'Adding a new clock' that callbacks "will be
explained in a following section".

If SMM is not supported, ACPI fixed hardware doesn't support
legacy-mode. ACPI-only platform. Where SCI_EN in PM1_CNT register is
always set.
The bit tells OS legacy mode(SCI_EN cleared) or ACPI mode(SCI_EN set).
With the next patch (setting fadt.smi_cmd = 0 when smm isn't enabled),
guest Linux tries to switch to ACPI mode, finds smi_cmd = 0, and then
fails to initialize acpi subsystem. This patch proactively fixes it.
This patch changes guest ABI. To keep compatibility, use
"smm-compat" introduced by earlier patch. If the property is true,
disable new behavior.

The default behaviour for virtio devices is not to use the platforms normal
DMA paths, but instead to use the fact that it's running in a hypervisor
to directly access guest memory. That doesn't work if the guest's memory
is protected from hypervisor access, such as with AMD's SEV or POWER's PEF.
So, if a confidential guest mechanism is enabled, then apply the
iommu_platform=on option so it will go through normal DMA mechanisms.
Those will presumably have some way of marking memory as shared with
the hypervisor or hardware so that DMA will work.

Currently the "memory-encryption" property is only looked at once we
get to kvm_init(). Although protection of guest memory from the
hypervisor isn't something that could really ever work with TCG, it's
not conceptually tied to the KVM accelerator.
In addition, the way the string property is resolved to an object is
almost identical to how a QOM link property is handled.
So, create a new "confidential-guest-support" link property which sets
this QOM interface link directly in the machine. For compatibility we
keep the "memory-encryption" property, but now implemented in terms of
the new property.

When the "memory-encryption" property is set, we also disable KSM
merging for the guest, since it won't accomplish anything.
We want that, but doing it in the property set function itself is
thereoretically incorrect, in the unlikely event of some configuration
environment that set the property then cleared it again before
constructing the guest.
More importantly, it makes some other cleanups we want more difficult.
So, instead move this logic to machine_run_board_init() conditional on
the final value of the property.

Commit 9d7bd0826f introduced a new 'use-disabled-flag' property
set to true by default.
To allow the migration, we set this property to false in the hw_compat,
but in the wrong place (hw_compat_4_1).
Since commit 9d7bd0826f was released with QEMU 5.0, we move
'use-disabled-flag' property to hw_compat_4_2, so 4.2 machine types
will have the pre-patch behavior and the migration can work.
The issue was discovered with vhost-vsock device and 4.2 machine
type without running any kernel in the VM:

The ptimer API currently provides two methods for setting the period:
ptimer_set_period(), which takes a period in nanoseconds, and
ptimer_set_freq(), which takes a frequency in Hz. Neither of these
lines up nicely with the Clock API, because although both the Clock
and the ptimer track the frequency using a representation of whole
and fractional nanoseconds, conversion via either period-in-ns or
frequency-in-Hz will introduce a rounding error.
Add a new function ptimer_set_period_from_clock() which takes the
Clock object directly to avoid the rounding issues. This includes a
facility for the user to specify that there is a frequency divider
between the Clock proper and the timer, as some timer devices like
the CMSDK APB dualtimer need this.
To avoid having to drag in clock.h from ptimer.h we add the Clock
type to typedefs.h.

It's common to want to print a human-readable indication of a clock's
frequency. Provide a utility function in the clock API to return a
string which is a displayable representation of the frequency,
and use it in qdev-monitor.c.

Anywhere we create a list of just one item or by prepending items
(typically because order doesn't matter), we can use
QAPI_LIST_PREPEND(). But places where we must keep the list in order
by appending remain open-coded until later patches.
Note that as a side effect, this also performs a cleanup of two minor
issues in qga/commands-posix.c: the old code was performing
new = g_malloc0(sizeof(*ret));
which 1) is confusing because you have to verify whether 'new' and
'ret' are variables with the same type, and 2) would conflict with C++
compilation (not an actual problem for this file, but makes
copy-and-paste harder).

We'll add extra code to the qdev property getters and setters, so
add wrapper functions where additional actions can be performed.
The new functions have a "field_prop_" prefix instead of "qdev_"
because the code will eventually be moved outside
qdev-properties.c, to common QOM code.

machine_init_done is not the right flag to check when preconfig
is taken into account; for example "./qemu-system-x86_64 -serial
mon:stdio -preconfig" does not print the QEMU monitor header until after
exit_preconfig. Add back a custom bool for mux character devices. This
partially undoes commit c7278b4355 ("chardev: introduce chr_machine_done
hook", 2018-03-12), but it keeps the cleaner logic using a function
pointer in ChardevClass.

qdev_machine_creation_done is only setting a flag now. Extend it to
move more code out of vl.c. Leave only consistency checks and gdbserver
processing in qemu_machine_creation_done.
gdbserver_start can be moved after qdev_machine_creation_done because
it only does listen on the socket and creates some internal data
structures; it does not send any data (e.g. guest state) over the socket.

The preconfig state is only used if -incoming is not specified, which
makes the RunState state machine more tricky than it need be. However
there is already an equivalent condition which works even with -incoming,
namely qdev_hotplug. Use it instead of a separate runstate.

Only softmmu code uses DEFINE_PROP_UUID, and it currently depends
on error_set_from_qdev_prop_error(). Move it to
qdev-properties-system.c to get out of our way when refactoring
the qdev property system.
We can eventually move it back to the core property system later,
after removing usage of error_set_from_qdev_prop_error().

In rom_check_and_register_reset() we report to the user if there is
a "ROM region overlap". This has a couple of problems:
* the reported information is not very easy to intepret
* the function just prints the overlap to stderr (and relies on
its single callsite in vl.c to do an error_report() and exit)
* only the first overlap encountered is diagnosed
Make this function use error_report() and error_printf() and
report a more user-friendly report with all the overlaps
diagnosed.
Sample old output:

These ROM regions might have been loaded by direct user request or by default.
They could be BIOS/firmware images, a guest kernel, initrd or some other file loaded into guest memory.
Check whether you intended to load all this guest code, and whether it has been built to load to the correct addresses.

In rom_check_and_register_reset() we detect overlaps by looking at
whether the ROM blob we're currently examining is in the same address
space and starts before the previous ROM blob ends. (This works
because the ROM list is kept sorted in order by AddressSpace and then
by address.)
Instead of keeping the AddressSpace and last address of the previous ROM
blob in local variables, just keep a pointer to it.
This will allow us to print more useful information when we do detect
an overlap.

In ptimer_reload(), we call the callback function provided by the
timer device that is using the ptimer. This callback might disable
the ptimer. The code mostly handles this correctly, except that
we'll still print the warning about "Timer with delta zero,
disabling" if the now-disabled timer happened to be set such that it
would fire again immediately if it were enabled (eg because the
limit/reload value is zero).
Suppress the spurious warning message and the unnecessary
repeat-deletion of the underlying timer in this case.

The nanosecond unit greatly limits the dynamic range we can display in
clock value traces, for values in the order of 1GHz and more. The
internal representation can go way beyond this value and it is quite
common for today's clocks to be within those ranges.
For example, a frequency between 500MHz+ and 1GHz will be displayed as
1ns. Beyond 1GHz, it will show up as 0ns.
Replace nanosecond periods traces with frequencies in the Hz unit
to have more dynamic range in the trace output.

There are two reasons for changing this:
1. The nvme device currently uses an internal Intel device id.
2. Since commits "nvme: fix write zeroes offset and count" and "nvme:
support multiple namespaces" the controller device no longer has
the quirks that the Linux kernel think it has.
As the quirks are applied based on pci vendor and device id, change
them to get rid of the quirks.
To keep backward compatibility, add a new 'use-intel-id' parameter to
the nvme device to force use of the Intel vendor and device id. This is
off by default but add a compat property to set this for 5.1 machines
and older. If a 5.1 machine is booted (or the use-intel-id parameter is
explicitly set to true), the Linux kernel will just apply these
unnecessary quirks:
1. NVME_QUIRK_IDENTIFY_CNS which says that the device does not support
anything else than values 0x0 and 0x1 for CNS (Identify Namespace
and Identify Namespace). With multiple namespace support, this just
means that the kernel will "scan" namespaces instead of using
"Active Namespace ID list" (CNS 0x2).
2. NVME_QUIRK_DISABLE_WRITE_ZEROES. The nvme device started out with a
broken Write Zeroes implementation which has since been fixed in
commit 9d6459d21a ("nvme: fix write zeroes offset and count").

When aliasing a clock with the qdev_alias_clock() function, a new link
property is created on the device aliasing the clock. The link points
to the aliased clock and use the OBJ_PROP_LINK_STRONG flag. This
property is read only since it does not provide a check callback for
modifications.
The object_property_add_link() documentation stats that with
OBJ_PROP_LINK_STRONG properties, the linked object reference count get
decremented when the property is deleted. But it is _not_ incremented on
creation (object_property_add_link() does not actually know the link).
This commit increments the reference count on the aliased clock to
ensure the aliased clock stays alive during the property lifetime, and
to avoid a double-free memory error when the property gets deleted.

This function creates a clock and parents it to another object with a
given name. It calls clock_setup_canonical_path before returning the
new clock.
This function is useful to create clocks in devices when one doesn't
want to expose it at the qdev level (as an input or an output).

Implement the ability of marking some versions deprecated. When
that CPU model is chosen, print a warning. The warning message
can be customized, e.g. suggesting an alternative CPU model to be
used instead.
The deprecation message will be printed by x86_cpu_list_entry(),
e.g. '-cpu help'.
QMP command 'query-cpu-definitions' will return a bool value
indicating the deprecation status.

Some code might race with placement of new devices on a bus.
We currently first place a (unrealized) device on the bus
and then realize it.
As a workaround, users that scan the child device list, can
check the realized property to see if it is safe to access such a device.
Use an atomic write here too to aid with this.
A separate discussion is what to do with devices that are unrealized:
It looks like for this case we only call the hotplug handler's unplug
callback and its up to it to unrealize the device.
An atomic operation doesn't cause harm for this code path though.

This fixes the race between device emulation code that tries to find
a child device to dispatch the request to (e.g a scsi disk),
and hotplug of a new device to that bus.
Note that this doesn't convert all the readers of the list
but only these that might go over that list without BQL held.
This is a very small first step to make this code thread safe.

Check if an address is free on the bus before plugging in the
device. This makes it possible to do the check without any
side effects, and to detect the problem early without having

Spec[1] defines 0 - 3 level memory side cache, however QEMU
CLI allows to specify an intermediate cache level without
specifying previous level. Such option(s) silently ignored
when building HMAT table, which leads to incomplete cache
information.
Make sure that previous level exists and error out
if it hasn't been provided.

The MACAddr structure contains an array of uint8_t. Previously
if a value was out of the [0..255] range, it was silently casted
and no input validation was done.
Replace strtol() by qemu_strtol() -- so checkpatch.pl won't
complain if we move this code later -- and return EINVAL if the
input is invalid.

The new interface starts unused, will start being used by the
next patches.
It provides methods for each accelerator to start a vcpu, kick a vcpu,
synchronize state, get cpu virtual clock and elapsed ticks.
In qemu_wait_io_event, make it clear that APC is used only for HAX
on Windows.

refactoring of cpus.c continues with cpu timer state extraction.
cpu-timers: responsible for the softmmu cpu timers state,
including cpu clocks and ticks.
icount: counts the TCG instructions executed. As such it is specific to
the TCG accelerator. Therefore, it is built only under CONFIG_TCG.
One complication is due to qtest, which uses an icount field to warp time
as part of qtest (qtest_clock_warp).
In order to solve this problem, provide a separate counter for qtest.
This requires fixing assumptions scattered in the code that
qtest_enabled() implies icount_enabled(), checking each specific case.

Users of existing VMs, wishing to preserve the same RAM distribution,
should configure it explicitly using ``-numa node,memdev`` options.
Current RAM distribution can be retrieved using HMP command
`info numa` and if separate memory devices (pc|nv-dimm) are present
use `info memory-device` and subtract device memory from output of
`info numa`.

Commit 9b3a35ec82 ("virtio: verify that legacy support is not accidentally
on") added a check that returns an error if legacy support is on, but the
device does not support legacy.
Unfortunately some devices were wrongly declared legacy capable even if
they were not (e.g vhost-vsock).
To avoid migration issues, we add a virtio-device property
(x-disable-legacy-check) to skip the legacy error, printing a warning
instead, for machine types < 5.1.

clang's C11 atomic_fetch_*() functions only take a C11 atomic type
pointer argument. QEMU uses direct types (int, etc) and this causes a
compiler error when a QEMU code calls these functions in a source file
that also included <stdatomic.h> via a system header file:

Avoid using atomic_*() names in QEMU's atomic.h since that namespace is

and <stdatomic.h> can co-exist. I checked /usr/include on my machine and
searched GitHub for existing "qatomic_" users but there seem to be none.
