Joel Brobecker 4d804846db [dwarf] Mark all functions as prototyped except C functions.
This makes sure that the types of the arguments are taken into account
when performing an inferior function call to a non-C (or C-like)
function. In particular, this makes sure that the arguments are
appropriatly converted to the correct type.

For instance, on x86_64-linux, with the following Ada code:

   procedure Set_Float (F : Float) is
   begin
      Global_Float := F;
   end Set_Float;

The following sequence shows that Float arguments are incorrectly
passed (Ada's Float type is the equivalent of type "float" in C):

    (gdb) call set_float (2.0)
    (gdb) print global_float
    $1 = 0.0

Putting a breakpoint inside set_float to inspect the value of
register xmm0 gives the first hint of the problem:

    (gdb) p $xmm0
    $2 = (v4_float => (0 => 0.0, 2.0, 0.0, 0.0),
          v2_double => (0 => 2.0, 0.0),
    [...]

It shows that the argument was passed as a double.

The code responsible for doing appropriate type conversions
for the arguments (value_arg_coerce) found that our function
was not prototyped, and thus could not use typing information
for the arguments. Instead, it defaulted to the value of "set
coerce-float-to-double", which by default is true, to determine
the argument type.

This patch fixes the problem by setting the PROTOTYPE flag
for all functions of any language except C and Objective C.

        (read_subroutine_type): Use it.

Joel Brobecker 356a523362 ppc-aix core file relocation.
The current code attempts to provide relocation support when debugging
core files via the rs6000_xfer_partial method of the rs6000-nat
target_ops vector. However, this target_ops vector does not get pushed
on the target stack at all when debugging core files, thus bypassing
completely that part of the code.

Joel Brobecker 36d1c68c70 Float parameter passing in funcall on ppc-aix & ppc-lynx178.
Given the following code:

    float global_float = 0.0;

    void
    set_float (float f)
    {
      global_float = f;
    }

GDB incorrectly calls set_float if the set_float function is marked
as prototyped:

    (gdb) call set_float (5.0)
    (gdb) print global_float
    $1 = 2048

What happens, when the function is marked as prototyped, is that
GDB finds that the argument is a float, casts the value given in
the expression to a float, and then gives that float to ppc-aix/
ppc-lynx178's push_dummy_call gdbarch routine. The latter then blindly
copies it as is in the first floating-point register, instead of
making sure that it has the proper format first.

Pedro Alves 9779ab84ac PR remote/15455 - QTro remote packet broken
In the function remote_trace_set_readonly_regions in gdb/remote.c, the
local variable 'offset' does not account for "QTro" at the start of
the packet with the result that if there are any read-only regions,
the packet is sent -- but without the "QTro" -- causing the remote
stub to report that the packet is unsupported:

  Sending packet: $:0000000000400200,(...),00000000004560a4#ab...Packet received:

vs the expected:

  Sending packet: $QTro:0000000000400200,(...),00000000004560a4#31...Packet received: OK

We don't see the problem when testing with GDBserver, as that supports
qXfer:trace-frame-info:read, meaning GDBserver never needs to read
from the read-only sections directly itself. This commit adds a test
that explicitly disables qXfer:trace-frame-info:read.

Joel Brobecker c1357578b3 move sparc-sol-thread.c back into sol-thread.c.
The routines in sparc-sol-thread used to be SPARC-specific (and
documented as such in the ptrace man page), and therefore hosting them
in a sparc-specific file made sense. However, newer versions of
Solaris now use those callbacks (Solaris 10 Update 10, apparently),
and thus the note about these callbacks being specific to SPARC
was removed.

So this patch deletes sparc-sol-thread.c and moves the code back
inside sol-thread.c.

gdb/ChangeLog:

        PR tdep/15420:
        * sol-thread.c (ps_lgetxregsize, ps_lgetxregs, ps_lsetxregs):
        New functions, directly copied from sparc-sol-thread.c.
        * sparc-sol-thread.c: Delete.
        * configure.ac: Remove code handling sparc-solaris-thread.c.
        * configure: Regenerate.

Joel Brobecker c0f5f49044 Improve output of "maintenance info sol-threads" command.
This patch does the following:
  - Puts the startfunc and "Sleep func" info on the same line;
  - Renames "Sleep func" into "sleepfunc" to be consistent with
    "startfunc"
  - Avoids the use of a '-' as a separate before the "sleepfunc"
    output, because the '-' looks odd and out of place when the
    "startfunc" field is not printed (ti.ti_startfunc is nul).
  - Use a '=' instead of ':' and avoids the space between
    the name of the value and its value, mostly to help group
    the value with its name.

For the record, this is how the new outout now looks like:

    (gdb) maintenance info sol-threads
    user thread #1, lwp 1, (active)
    system thread #2, lwp 2, (active)
    system thread #3, lwp 0, (asleep)    sleepfunc=0xff32d9e0
    user   thread #4, lwp 4, (asleep)    startfunc=[...].task_wrapper   sleepfunc=0xff3290f0
    system thread #5, lwp 7, (active)    startfunc=_co_timerset
    user   thread #6, lwp 8, (active)    startfunc=[...].task_wrapper

Joel Brobecker 726ce67c26 darwin: warning resuming inferior after attach
This patch avoids a warning when resuming the execution of a program
that we attached to. For instance:

    (gdb) attach 29989
    (gdb) continue
    Continuing.
    warning: Mach error at "/[...]/darwin-nat.c:738" in function
             "darwin_resume_thread": (os/kern) failure (0x5)

The warning is relatively harmless, but worrisome for the average
user. The warning comes from the fact that darwin_wait recorded
that the fake stop event corresponding to the suspend action was
caused by the main thread being suspended on a SIGTRAP. As a result
of this, when resuming the program's execution, we try to resume
the thread's execution as well. This is where the issue occurs,
as the thread was not in fact suspended, thus triggering the warning.

        * darwin-nat.c (darwin_setup_fake_stop_event): New function.

Walfred Tedeschi f92b06daf9 Fix display of structures/bitfields in register description.
Add support for displaying structures and bitfields for registers when
executing "maint print c-tdesc". This command is also used when
converting the xml target description file into c file.

Example of the behaviour is given below reporting a snipet of the xml file
and a snippet of the c code generated.

XML file contains:
...
    <union id="vecint">
      <field name="v4" type="v4int8"/>
      <field name="v2" type="v2int16"/>
    </union>

    <struct id="struct1">
      <field name="v4" type="v4int8"/>
      <field name="v2" type="v2int16"/>
    </struct>

    <struct id="struct2" size="8">
      <field name="f1" start="0" end="34"/>
      <field name="f2" start="63" end="63"/>
    </struct>
...

Setting this xml file as target description file and
issuing the maintenance print c-tdesc the following output
is obtained:

  feature = tdesc_create_feature (result, "extra");
  field_type = tdesc_named_type (feature, "int8");
  tdesc_create_vector (feature, "v4int8", field_type, 4);

  field_type = tdesc_named_type (feature, "int16");
  tdesc_create_vector (feature, "v2int16", field_type, 2);

  type = tdesc_create_union (feature, "vecint");
  field_type = tdesc_named_type (feature, "v4int8");
  tdesc_add_field (type, "v4", field_type);
  field_type = tdesc_named_type (feature, "v2int16");
  tdesc_add_field (type, "v2", field_type);

C output is not supported type "struct1".

This is finally the issue.

2013-03-27  Walfred Tedeschi  <walfred.tedeschi@intel.com>

        * target-descriptions.c (maint_print_c_tdesc_cmd):
        Add case to parse structures as register types and
        bitfields.

Sergio Durigan Junior 9991b20795 Andrew Haley found a bug on GDB running on ARM when using
--enable-64-bit-bfd. Basically the issue happens when dealing with "bl"
instructions: GDB does branch destination calculation and (wrongly)
sign-extends the PC. Here is a piece of his original message explaining
the problem:

Anyway, the fix is simple and Andrew himself provided it for us. It
took a while for me to figure out how to trigger the bug (in order to
write a testcase for it), but I finally made it.

The attached patch fixes the problem (by casting to `unsigned long'
instead of just `long'), and also includes a testcase to reproduce the
issue.

ctf_save_write's second parameter is gdb_byte *, and all these
arguments are 'char *'. Since this function is ultimately just
writing host bytes to a local file with fwrite, an alternative would
be to change ctf_save_write to take a 'void *' instead of 'gdb_byte

The mips packet payload is ASCII, so it makes sense for
mips_send_packet and mips_receive_packet to expose 'char *'-based
interfaces, as currently they do. But, mips packets have a binary
header, so if you look at e.g., mips_receive_packet's implementation,
you'll see "unsigned char" buffers in use. I find it the most natural
to make the payload pointer passed to mips_cksum 'char *' too.

The other changes are straightforward adjustments -- a checksum is
naturally unsigned, and there's one point where we're reading a bfd section.

Pedro Alves bc20a4afc3 gdb_byte for binary buffer, char for string: remote.c, tracepoint.c.
While the RSP is largely ASCII based (hence the packet buffer type is
char *), at places we pass around 8-bit binary packets in that buffer.
Functions like hex2bin or remote_escape_output conceptually are
handling binary buffers, so I left them as working with gdb_byte, and
added casts where necessary. Whether these are host bytes or target
bytes is blurry at present, so this is largely a matter of taste.
Switching some of these functions to take "char *" or "void *" would
be equally good.

Pedro Alves c628b528e0 serial_write: change prototype to take a void-pointer buffer.
While remote.c works with "char *" buffers most of the time, other
remote targets have binary-ish-er protocols, and choose to use
"unsigned char" throughout, like e.g., remote-mips.c or
remote-m32r-sdi.c. That results in -Wpointer-sign warnings in those
targets, unless we add casts in calls to serial_write. Since
serial_write is only concerned about sending raw host bytes out, and
serial_ops->write_prim already works with "void *"/"size_t", a similar
interface to the "write" or "send" system calls, I find it natural to
change serial_write's prototype accordingly, avoiding the need for
casts.

Pedro Alves 433730c973 Fix the x87 FP register printout when issuing the “info float” command.
Consider the following simple program:

.globl  _start
.text
_start:
      fldt    val
.data
      val: .byte 0x00,0x00,0x45,0x07,0x11,0x19,0x22,0xe9,0xfe,0xbf

With current GDB on x86-64 GNU/Linux hosts, after the moment the fldt
command has been executed the register st(0) looks like this,
according to the “info regs” output (TOP=7):

  R7: Valid   0xffffffbffffffffeffffffe922191107450000 -0.910676542908976927

which is clearly wrong (just count its length). The problem is due to
the printf statement (see patch) printing a promoted integer value of
a char argument "raw[i]", and, since char is signed on x86-64
GNU/Linux, the erroneous “ffffff” are printed for the first three
bytes which turn out to be "negative". The fix is to use gdb_byte
instead which is unsigned (and is the type of value_contents(), the
type to be used for raw target bytes anyway). After the fix the value
will be printed correctly:

  R7: Valid   0xbffee922191107450000 -0.910676542908976927

../../../src/gdb/gdbserver/../common/glibc_thread_db.h:270:3: error: unknown type name ‘intptr_t’

We used to have a workaround for this, but the patch to import
gnulib's stdint.h removed it:

  http://www.sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2008-06/msg00050.html

and defs.h made to always include stdint.h. However, gdbserver
doesn't include stdint.h in its equivalent server.h.

Rather than working around the issue, I've imported a more recent
version from glibc, which itself includes <stdint.h>. Other than
copyright years and FSF snail mail address, the file hasn't been
touched since 2003 in glibc. AFAICS, our version was updated last in
2000-09-03.

A note on the apparent license change: before the previous patch, this
file's contents were part of gdb_thread_db.h, and we can see that its
license's text was changed in this patch
<http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2009-03/msg00251.html>.  That
was certainly just an easy to overlook grep/sed mistake that fell
through the cracks.

This patch:

 http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2009-04/msg00115.html

Changed behaviour by only defining LIBTHREAD_DB_SO if thread_db.h exists. The
definition of LIBTHREAD_DB_SO and LIBTHREAD_DB_SEARCH_PATH should be moved
outside of #ifdef HAVE_THREAD_DB_H.

This is based on a patch attached to the PR, however, it needed a

Pedro Alves f81d112039 Accept "set foo unlimited" in integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited commands.
Currently, several commands take "0" or "-1" to mean "unlimited".

"show" knows when to print "unlimited":

 (gdb) show height
 Number of lines gdb thinks are in a page is 45.
 (gdb) set height 0
 (gdb) show height
 Number of lines gdb thinks are in a page is unlimited.

However, the user can't herself specify "unlimited" directly:

 (gdb) set height unlimited
 No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command.
 (gdb)

This patch addresses that, by adjusting the set handler for all
integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited commands to accept literal
"unlimited". It also installs a completer. Presently, we complete on
symbols by default, and at
<http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-03/msg00864.html> I've
shown a WIP prototype that tried to keep that half working in these
commands. In the end, it turned out to be more complicated than
justifiable, IMO. It's super rare to want to pass the value of a
variable/symbol in the program to a GDB set/show knob. That'll still
work, it's just that we won't assist with completion anymore. This
patch just sticks with the simple, and completes on "unlimited", and
nothing else. This simplification means that

  "set he<tab><tab>"

is all it takes to get to:

  "set height unlimited"

The patch then goes through all integer/uinteger/zuinteger_unlimited
commands in the tree, and updates both the online help and the manual
to mention that "unlimited" is accepted in addition to 0/-1. In the
cases where the command had no online help text at all, this adds it.
I've tried to make the texts read in a way that "unlimited" is
suggested before "0" or "-1" is.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

Pedro Alves 2f9d54cfce make -gdb-exit call disconnect_tracing too, and don't lose history if the target errors on "quit"
Gareth mentions in PR gdb/15275:

 "The MI '-gdb-exit' command mi_cmd_gdb_exit() never calls disconnect_tracing()
 and therefore exits correctly."

It should, so to get out of tfind mode, as quit may detach instead of
kill, and we don't want to confuse the memory/register accesses
etc. of the detach process. So we should push down the disconnect
tracing bits at least to quit_force. But we can't as is, as that
would swallow the error thrown by answering "no" to:

  Trace is running but will stop on detach; detach anyway? (y or n)

So to address that, we split disconnect_tracing in two. One part that
does the query, and another part that does the rest, and we make
quit_force call the latter.

Looking at quit_force, it does several things, some of which are a bit
independent of the others. It first kills/detaches, and then writes
history, and then runs the final cleanups. It seems better to me to
do each of these things even if the previous thing throws. E.g., as
is, if something throws while detaching, then we skip writing history.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.

Pedro Alves f6de8ec262 create_breapoint / explicit mode: Error out if there's garbage after the breakpoint location.
If !PARSE_CONDITION_AND_THREAD, then ARG is just the location, nothing
else. The fact that the describing comment of create_breakpoint
doesn't mention this just looks like an oversight of when extra_string
was added. "parse_condition_and_thread" has been a misnomer ever
since extra_string was added -- better rename it avoid more confusion.
This makes it "parse_arg", as that'll remain stable even if/when more
explicit parameters are added.

Pedro Alves c9a6ce02b5 tracepoint->step_count fixes
If a tracepoint's actions list includes a while-stepping action, and
then the actions are changed to a list without any while-stepping
action, the tracepoint's step_count will be left with a stale value.
For example:

 (gdb) trace subr
 Tracepoint 1 at 0x4004d9: file ../../../src/gdb/testsuite//actions-changed.c, line 31.
 (gdb) actions
 Enter actions for tracepoint 1, one per line.
 End with a line saying just "end".
 >collect $reg
 >end
 (gdb) set debug remote 1
 (gdb) tstart

 Sending packet: $QTNotes:#e8...Packet received: OK
 (gdb) actions
 Enter actions for tracepoint 1, one per line.
 End with a line saying just "end".
 >collect $reg

   >collect $reg
   >end

 (gdb) tstart

 Sending packet: $QTDP👎00000000004004d9:R03FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF#2b...Packet received: OK

The last "$QTDP:1:00000000004004d9:E:1:0-#a4" should be "$QTDP:1:00000000004004d9:E:0:0-#a3".
In pseudo-diff:

  -$QTDP:1:00000000004004d9:E:1:0-#a4
  +$QTDP:1:00000000004004d9:E:0:0-#a3

A related issue is that the "commands" command actually supports
setting commands to a range of breakpoints/tracepoints at once. But,
hacking "maint info breakpoints" to print t->step_count, reveals:

 (gdb) trace main
 Tracepoint 5 at 0x45a2ab: file ../../src/gdb/gdb.c, line 29.
 (gdb) trace main
 Note: breakpoint 5 also set at pc 0x45a2ab.
 Tracepoint 6 at 0x45a2ab: file ../../src/gdb/gdb.c, line 29.
 (gdb) commands 5-6
 Type commands for breakpoint(s) 5-6, one per line.
 End with a line saying just "end".
 > while-stepping 5

         while-stepping 5
         end
         not installed on target
 (gdb)

that tracepoint 6 doesn't end up with the correct step_count.

The issue is that here:

 static void
 do_map_commands_command (struct breakpoint *b, void *data)
 {
  struct commands_info *info = data;

  if (info->cmd == NULL)
    {
      struct command_line *l;

      if (info->control != NULL)
	l = copy_command_lines (info->control->body_list[0]);
      else
	{
	  struct cleanup *old_chain;
	  char *str;

	  str = xstrprintf (_("Type commands for breakpoint(s) "
			      "%s, one per line."),
			    info->arg);

	  old_chain = make_cleanup (xfree, str);

	  l = read_command_lines (str,
				  info->from_tty, 1,
				  (is_tracepoint (b)
				   ? check_tracepoint_command : 0),
				  b);

	  do_cleanups (old_chain);
	}

      info->cmd = alloc_counted_command_line (l);
    }

validate_actionline is never called for tracepoints other than the
first (the copy_command_lines path). Right below, we have:

  /* If a breakpoint was on the list more than once, we don't need to
     do anything.  */
  if (b->commands != info->cmd)
    {
      validate_commands_for_breakpoint (b, info->cmd->commands);
      incref_counted_command_line (info->cmd);
      decref_counted_command_line (&b->commands);
      b->commands = info->cmd;
      observer_notify_breakpoint_modified (b);
    }

And validate_commands_for_breakpoint looks like the right place to put
a call; if we reset step_count there too, we have a nice central fix
for the first issue as well, because trace_actions_command calls
breakpoint_set_commands that also calls
validate_commands_for_breakpoint.

We end up calling validate_actionline twice for the first tracepoint,
since read_command_lines calls it too, through
check_tracepoint_command, but that should be harmless.

I hacked "apropos" to dump the whole set of commands (just make it

Pedro Alves c33e31fd4a unpush the remote target if serial_write fails.
PR gdb/15275 notes that when debugging with a remote connection over a
serial link and the link is disconnected, say by disconnecting USB
serial port, the GDB quit command no longer works:

 (gdb)
 tar ext /dev/ttyACM0
 &"tar ext /dev/ttyACM0\n"
 ~"Remote debugging using /dev/ttyACM0\n"
 ^done
 (gdb)
 set debug remote 1
 &"set debug remote 1\n"
 ^done
 (gdb)
 quit
 &"quit\n"
 &"Sending packet: $qTStatus#49..."
 &"putpkt: write failed: Input/output error.\n"
 ^error,msg="putpkt: write failed: Input/output error."
 (gdb)
 (gdb)
 quit
 &"quit\n"
 &"Sending packet: $qTStatus#49..."
 &"putpkt: write failed: Input/output error.\n"
 ^error,msg="putpkt: write failed: Input/output error."

This is not reproducible with TCP connections, as with that, sending
doesn't error out, but instead the error is detected on the subsequent
readchar. When that read fails, we unpush the remote target, and
throw TARGET_CLOSE_ERROR. To address PR gdb/15275, instead of
catching the error in remote_get_trace_status as presently done (which
leaves this same issue latent for another packet to trip on), or of
making ser-unix.c fake success too on failed writes, so we'd get to
readchar detecting the error on serial ports too, better let the error
propagate out of serial_write, and catch it at the remote.c level,
throwing away the target if writing fails too, instead of delaying
that until the next read.

Joel Brobecker af312be731 Ignore __fu<digits>__ symbols from COFF symbol tables
The debugger sometimes prints strange function names for given
addresses. For instance, with the following source code...

	4    procedure Foo is
	5       A : Integer;
	6    begin
	7       Do_Nothing (A'Address);
	8    end Foo;

... we can see...

    (gdb) info line 5
    Line 5 of "foo.adb" starts at address 0x4017ca <_ada_foo+6>
       and ends at 0x4017d2 <_fu29__system__scalar_values__is_is4+7>.
                             ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

_fu29__system__scalar_values__is_is4 is an artificial symbol
generated by the linker, and interferes with the pc-to-symbol
resolution. There isn't much in the general minimal_symbol
data that could help us identify them, so this patch changes
the COFF reader to simply ignore them.

Pedro Alves bd3eecc323 Stop sending qTStatus if the target doesn't recognize it; add packet configuration command.
GDB currently sends a qTStatus even if the target previously replied
an empty packet to a previous qTStatus. If the target doesn't
recognize the packet, there's no point in trying again.

The machinery we have in place is packet_ok, which has the nice side
effect of forcing one to install a configuration command/knob for the
packet in question, which is often handy when you need to debug
things, and/or emulate a target that doesn't support the packet, or even,
it can be used as workaround for the old broken kgdb's that return error
to qTSTatus instead of an empty packet.
