Revert the header-sorting patch
Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script). So, I'm reverting the patch. Sort includes for files gdb/[a-f]*.[chyl].
This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl]. The patch was written by a script. Tested by the buildbot. More block constification
I noticed that there are still many places referring to non-const blocks. This constifies all the remaining ones that I found that could be constified. In a few spots, this search found unused variables or fields. I removed these. Slightly simplify minsym creation

Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). Avoid internal errors when stepping outside 'main' on MinGW
When one steps with "next" past the 'main's 'return' statement in MinGW programs built by mingw.org's tools, PC lands in a function whose symbol is not in any symtab. GDB then looks up the nearest symbol, and should find none, because all those with addresses below PC are not real functions. Having unresolved symbols, whose address is zero, in minsyms tricked GDB into using these bogus symbols, which then caused assertion violation and internal_error. Simple -Wshadow=local fixes
This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. Introduce buildsym-legacy.h
This introduces a new header, buildsym-legacy.h, and changes all the symbol readers to use it. The idea is to put the function-based interface, that relies on the buildsym_compunit global, into a separate header. Use scoped_free_pendings in coff_symtab_read
PR gdb/18624 concerns an assertion failure that occurs when setting a breakpoint in a Go program on Windows. What happens here is that coff_symtab_read uses buildsym but does not instantiate scoped_free_pendings. So, the struct pending objects are never released. Later, dwarf2read.c calls buildsym_init, which asserts. This patch fixes the problem by instantiating scoped_free_pendings in coff_symtab_read. Tested using the test executable from the PR. Remove TYPE_TAG_NAME
TYPE_TAG_NAME has been an occasional source of confusion and bugs. It seems to me that it is only useful for C and C++ -- but even there, not so much, because at least with DWARF there doesn't seem to be any way to wind up with a type where the name and the tag name are both non-NULL and different. So, this patch removes TYPE_TAG_NAME entirely. This should save a little memory, but more importantly, it simplifies this part of gdb. A few minor test suite adjustments were needed. Remove symfile_complaints
The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint topics. However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been defined. Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to debuginfo reading. Add support for the readnever concept
The purpose of this concept is to turn the load of debugging
information off, either globally (via the '--readnever' option), or
objfile-specific. The implementation proposed here is an extension of
the patch distributed with Fedora GDB; looking at the Fedora patch
itself and the history, one can see some reasons why it was never
resubmitted:
- The patch appears to have been introduced as a workaround, at
least initially;
- The patch is far from perfect, as it simply shunts the load of
DWARF debugging information, without really worrying about the
other debug format.
- Who really does non-symbolic debugging anyways?
One use of this feature is when a user simply wants to do the
following sequence: attach, dump core, detach. Loading the debugging
information in this case is an unnecessary cause of delay.
This patch expands the version shipped with Fedora GDB in order to
make the feature available for all the debuginfo backends, not only
for DWARF. It also implements a per-objfile flag which can be
activated by using the "-readnever" command when using the
'add-symbol-file' or 'symbol-file' commands.
It's also worth mentioning that this patch tests whether GDB correctly
fails to initialize if both '--readnow' and '--readnever' options are
passed.
Tested on the BuildBot.

Per-language symbol name hashing algorithm
Currently, we have a mess of symbol name hashing/comparison routines. There's msymbol_hash for mangled names, and dict_hash and msymbol_hash_iw for demangled names. Then there's strcmp_iw, strcmp_iw_ordered and Ada's full_match/wild_match, which all have to agree with the hashing routines. That's why dict_hash is really about Ada names. From the inconsistency department, minimal symbol hashing doesn't go via dict_hash, so Ada's wild matching can't ever work with minimal symbols. This patch starts fixing this, by doing two things: #1 - adds a language vector method to let each language decide how to compute a symbol name hash. #2 - makes dictionaries know the language of the symbols they hold, and then use the dictionaries language to decide which hashing method to use. For now, this is just scaffolding, since all languages install the default method. The series will make C++ install its own hashing method later on, and will add per-language symbol name comparison routines too. Use class to manage BFD reference counts
This introduces a new specialization of gdb::ref_ptr that can be used to manage BFD reference counts. Then it changes most places in gdb to use this new class, rather than explicit reference-counting or cleanups. This patch removes make_cleanup_bfd_unref. If you look you will see a couple of spots using "release" where a use of gdb_bfd_ref_ptr would be cleaner. These will be fixed in the next patch. I think this patch fixes some latent bugs. For example, it seems to me that previously objfpy_add_separate_debug_file leaked a BFD. I'm not 100% certain that the macho_symfile_read_all_oso change is correct. The existing code here is hard for me to follow. Make symfile_add_flags and objfile->flags strongly typed
This makes these flag types be "enum flag" types. The benefit is
making use of C++'s stronger typing -- mixing the flags types by
mistake errors at compile time.
This caught one old bug in symbol_file_add_main_1 already, fixed by
this patch as well:

Record minimal symbols directly in reader.

Change minimal_symbol_reader to store objfile
This changes minimal_symbol_reader to require the objfile to be passed to the constructor. The class now records the objfile and automatically uses it later in "install". This is a minor cleanup that will come in useful in the next patch. Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for the mailing list. This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example: - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...) - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form of a void pointer - "user data" passed to some function This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted. Here's the ChangeLog entry. Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case more often than not). The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc. Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't know. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW). - xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo) - xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo) - xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num) - obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo) - obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num) - alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo) - alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num) Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC.
