Range represents a range as follows. Member @start is the inclusive
lower bound, member @end is the exclusive upper bound. Zero @end is
special: if @start is also zero, the range is empty, else @end is to
be interpreted as 2^64. No other empty ranges may occur.
The range [0,2^64-1] cannot be represented. If you try to create it
with range_set_bounds1(), you get the empty range instead. If you try
to create it with range_set_bounds() or range_extend(), assertions
fail. Before range_set_bounds() existed, the open-coded creation
usually got you the empty range instead. Open deathtrap.
Moreover, the code dealing with the janus-faced @end is too clever by
half.
Dumb this down to a more pedestrian representation: members @lob and
@upb are inclusive lower and upper bounds. The empty range is encoded
as @lob = 1, @upb = 0.

Calling our function g_list_insert_sorted_merged is a misnomer,
since we are NOT writing a glib function. Furthermore, we are
making every caller pass the same comparator function of
range_merge(): any caller that would try otherwise would break
in weird ways since our internal call to ranges_can_merge() is
hard-coded to operate only on ranges, rather than paying
attention to the caller's comparator.
Better is to fix things so that callers don't have to care about
our internal comparator, by picking a function name and updating
the parameter type away from a gratuitous use of void*, to make
it obvious that we are operating specifically on a list of ranges
and not a generic list. Plus, refactoring the code here will
make it easier to plug a memory leak in the next patch.
range_compare() is now internal only, and moves to the .c file.

g_list_insert_sorted_merged() is rather large to be an inline
function; move it to its own file. range_merge() and
ranges_can_merge() can likewise move, as they are only used
internally. Also, it becomes obvious that the condition within
range_merge() is already satisfied by its caller, and that the
return value is not used.
The diffstat is misleading, because of the copyright boilerplate.

This is wrong. Asking for an invalid log file on the command line

The appended allows us to easily represent a distribution using Unicode

Currently we emit a consume-load in atomic_rcu_read. Because of
limitations in current compilers, this is overkill for non-Alpha hosts
and it is only useful to make Thread Sanitizer work.
This patch leaves the consume-load in atomic_rcu_read when
compiling with Thread Sanitizer enabled, and resorts to a
relaxed load + smp_read_barrier_depends otherwise.
On an RMO host architecture, such as aarch64, the performance
improvement of this change is easily measurable. For instance,
qht-bench performs an atomic_rcu_read on every lookup. Performance
before and after applying this patch:
$ tests/qht-bench -d 5 -n 1

For correctness, smp_read_barrier_depends() is only required to
emit a barrier on Alpha hosts. However, we are currently emitting
a consume fence unconditionally, and most compilers currently treat
consume and acquire fences as equivalent.
Fix it by keeping the consume fence if we're compiling with Thread
Sanitizer, since this might help prevent false warnings. Otherwise,
only emit the barrier for Alpha hosts. Note that we still guarantee
that smp_read_barrier_depends() is a compiler barrier.

When debugging big programs or system emulation sometimes you want both
the verbosity of cpu,exec et all but don't want to generate lots of logs
for unneeded stuff. This patch adds a new option -dfilter which allows
you to specify interesting address ranges in the form:
-dfilter 0x8000..0x8fff,0xffffffc000080000+0x200,...
Then logging code can use the new qemu_log_in_addr_range() function to
decide if it will output logging information for the given range.

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

qemu_clock_warp function is called to update virtual clock when CPU
is sleeping. This function includes replay checkpoint to make execution
deterministic in icount mode.
Record/replay module flushes async event queue at checkpoints.
Some of the events (e.g., block devices operations) include interaction
with hardware. E.g., APIC polled by block devices sets one of IRQ flags.
Flag to be set depends on currently executed thread (CPU or iothread).
Therefore in replay mode we have to process the checkpoints in the same thread
as they were recorded.
qemu_clock_warp function (and its checkpoint) may be called from different
thread. This patch decouples two different execution cases of this function:
call when CPU is sleeping from iothread and call from cpu thread to update
virtual clock.
First task is performed by qemu_start_warp_timer function. It sets warp
timer event to the moment of nearest pending virtual timer.
Second function (qemu_account_warp_timer) is called from cpu thread
before execution of the code. It advances virtual clock by adding the length
of period while CPU was sleeping.

The windows socket functions look identical to the normal POSIX
sockets functions, but instead of setting errno, the caller needs
to call WSAGetLastError(). QEMU has tried to deal with this
incompatibility by defining a socket_error() method that callers
must use that abstracts the difference between WSAGetLastError()
and errno.
This approach is somewhat error prone though - many callers of
the sockets functions are just using errno directly because it
is easy to forget the need use a QEMU specific wrapper. It is
not always immediately obvious that a particular function will
in fact call into Windows sockets functions, so the dev may not
even realize they need to use socket_error().
This introduces an alternative approach to portability inspired
by the way GNULIB fixes portability problems. We use a macro to
redefine the original socket function names to refer to a QEMU
wrapper function. The wrapper function calls the original Win32
sockets method and then sets errno from the WSAGetLastError()
value.
Thus all code can simply call the normal POSIX sockets APIs are
have standard errno reporting on error, even on Windows. This
makes the socket_error() method obsolete.
We also bring closesocket & ioctlsocket into this approach. Even
though they are non-standard Win32 names, we can't wrap the normal
close/ioctl methods since there's no reliable way to distinguish
between a file descriptor and HANDLE in Win32.
Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Berrange <berrange@redhat.com>
Historically QEMU has had a socket_error() macro that was
defined to map to WSASocketError(). The os-win32.h header
file would define errno constants that mapped to the
WSA error constants. This worked fine with Mingw32 since
its header files never defined any errno values, nor did
it even provide an errno.h. So callers of socket_error()
could match on traditional Exxxx constants and it would
all "just work".
With Mingw64 though, things work rather differently. First
there is an errno.h file which defines all the traditional
errno constants you'd expect from a UNIX platform. There
is then a winerror.h which defined the WSA error constants.
Crucially the WSAExxxx errno values in winerror.h do not
match the Exxxx errno values in error.h.
If QEMU had only imported winerror.h it would still work,
but the qemu/osdep.h file unconditionally imports errno.h.
So callers of socket_error() will get now WSAExxxx values
back and compare them to the Exxx constants. This will
always fail silently at runtime.
To solve this QEMU needs to stop assuming the WSAExxxx
constant values match the Exxx constant values. Thus the
socket_error() macro is turned into a small function that
re-maps WSAExxxx values into Exxx.

Actively redefining 'inline' is wrong for C++, where gcc has an
extension 'inline namespace' which fails to compile if the

matter once we start to include "qemu/osdep.h" first from C++
files, depending also on whether the system headers are new
enough to be using the gcc extension.
But rather than just guard things by __cplusplus, let's look at
the overall picture. Commit df2542c737 in 2007 defined 'inline'
to the gcc attribute __always_inline__, with the rationale "To
avoid discarded inlining bug". But compilers have improved since
then, and we are probably better off trusting the compiler rather
than trying to force its hand.

extract_common_blockdev_options() uses qemu_opt_get_number() to parse
the bps/iops numbers to uint64_t, then converts to double and stores in
ThrottleConfig. The actual parsing is done by strtoull() in
parse_option_number(). Negative numbers are wrapped to large positive
ones, and stored.
We used to reject negative numbers since 7d81c1413c, but this regressed
when the option parsing code was changed later. Now fix this again.
This time, define an arbitrary large upper limit (1e15), and check the
values so both negative and impractically big numbers are caught and
reported.

The socket_dgram method accepts a QAPI SocketAddress object
which it then turns into QemuOpts before calling the

use QAPI SocketAddress directly, the QemuOpts conversion
step can be eliminated.
This removes the very last use of QemuOpts from the

The qemu-char.c contains two helper methods send_all
and recv_all. These are in fact declared in sockets.h
so ought to have been in util/qemu-sockets.c. For added
fun the impl of recv_all is completely missing on Win32.
Fortunately there is only a single caller of these
methods, the TPM passthrough code, which is only
ever compiled on Linux. With only a single caller
these helpers are not compelling enough to keep so
inline them in the TPM code, avoiding the need to
fix the missing recv_all on Win32.

What's more meta than using qapi to define qapi? :)
Convert QType into a full-fledged[*] builtin qapi enum type, so
that a subsequent patch can then use it as the discriminator
type of qapi alternate types. Fortunately, the judicious use of
'prefix' in the qapi definition avoids churn to the spelling of
the enum constants.
To avoid circular definitions, we have to flip the order of
inclusion between "qobject.h" vs. "qapi-types.h". Back in commit
28770e0, we had the latter include the former, so that we could
use 'QObject *' for our implementation of 'any'. But that usage
also works with only a forward declaration, whereas the
definition of QObject requires QType to be a complete type.
[*] The type has to be builtin, rather than declared in
qapi/common.json, because we want to use it for alternates even
when common.json is not included. But since it is the first
builtin enum type, we have to add special cases to qapi-types
and qapi-visit to only emit definitions once, even when two
qapi files are being compiled into the same binary (the way we
already handled builtin list types like 'intList'). We may
need to revisit how multiple qapi files share common types,
but that's a project for another day.

MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_FIXED, 19, 0) = -1 EBUSY (Device or resource busy)
This is because on ppc64, Linux fixes a page size for a virtual address
at mmap time, so we can't switch a range of memory from anonymous
small pages to hugetlbs with MAP_FIXED.

There are two issues with qemu_hw_version() today:
1) If a machine has hw_version set, the value returned by it is
not very useful, because it is not the actual QEMU version.
2) If a machine does't set hw_version, the return value of
qemu_hw_version() is broken, because it will change when
upgrading QEMU.
For those reasons, using qemu_hw_version() is strongly
discouraged, and should be used only in code that used
QEMU_VERSION in the past and needs to keep compatibility.
To fix (2), instead of making every machine broken by default
unless they set hw_version, make qemu_hw_version() simply return
"2.5+" if qemu_set_hw_version() is not called.

codebase, and the impl was never in the block/ directory

When using regular fork() the child process of course inherits
all the parents' signal handlers. If the child then proceeds
to close() any open file descriptors, it may break some of those
registered signal handlers. The child generally does not want to
ever run any of the signal handlers that the parent may have
installed in the short time before it exec's. The parent may also
have blocked various signals which the child process will want
enabled.
This introduces a wrapper qemu_fork() that takes care to sanitize
signal handling across fork. Before forking it blocks all signals
in the parent thread. After fork returns, the parent unblocks the
signals and carries on as usual. The child, however, resets all the
signal handlers back to their defaults before it unblocks signals.
The child process can now exec the binary in a "clean" signal
environment.

Gather up all the fields currently in CPUState which deal with the CPU's
AddressSpace into a separate CPUAddressSpace struct. This paves the way
for allowing the CPU to know about more than one AddressSpace.
The rearrangement also allows us to make the MemoryListener a directly
embedded object in the CPUAddressSpace (it could not be embedded in
CPUState because 'struct MemoryListener' isn't defined for the user-only
builds). This allows us to resolve the FIXME in tcg_commit() by going
directly from the MemoryListener to the CPUAddressSpace.
This patch extracts the actual update of the cached dispatch pointer
from cpu_reload_memory_map() (which is renamed accordingly to
cpu_reloading_memory_map() as it is only responsible for breaking
cpu-exec.c's RCU critical section now). This lets us keep the definition
of the CPUAddressSpace struct private to exec.c.

The oslib-win32 file currently provides a localtime_r and
gmtime_r replacement unconditionally. Some versions of
Mingw-w64 would provide crude macros for localtime_r/gmtime_r
which QEMU takes care to disable. Latest versions of Mingw-w64
now provide actual functions for localtime_r/gmtime_r, but
with a twist that you have to include unistd.h or pthread.h
before including time.h. By luck some files in QEMU have
such an include order, resulting in compile errors:

This change adds a configure test to see if localtime_r
exits, and only enables the QEMU impl if missing. We also

QemuEvents are used heavily by call_rcu. We do not want them to be slow,
but the current implementation does a kernel call on every invocation
of qemu_event_* and won't cut it.
So, wrap a Win32 manual-reset event with a fast userspace path. The
states and transitions are the same as for the futex and mutex/condvar
implementations, but the slow path is different of course. The idea
is to reset the Win32 event lazily, as part of a test-reset-test-wait
sequence. Such a sequence is, indeed, how QemuEvents are used by
RCU and other subsystems!
The patch includes a formal model of the algorithm.

Including qemu-common.h from other header files is generally a bad
idea, because it means it's very easy to end up with a circular
dependency. For instance, if we wanted to include memory.h from
qom/cpu.h we'd end up with this loop:
memory.h -> qemu-common.h -> cpu.h -> cpu-qom.h -> qom/cpu.h -> memory.h
Remove the include from memory.h. This requires us to fix up a few
other files which were inadvertently getting declarations indirectly
through memory.h.
The biggest change is splitting the fprintf_function typedef out
into its own header so other headers can get at it without having
to include qemu-common.h.

This function will be used to avoid recursive locking of the iothread lock
whenever address_space_rw/ld*/st* are called with the BQL held, which is
almost always the case.
Tracking whether the iothread is owned is very cheap (just use a TLS
variable) but requires some care because now the lock must always be
taken with qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(). Previously this wasn't the case.
Outside TCG mode this is not a problem. In TCG mode, we need to be
careful and avoid the "prod out of compiled code" step if already
in a VCPU thread. This is easily done with a check on current_cpu,
i.e. qemu_in_vcpu_thread().
Hopefully, multithreaded TCG will get rid of the whole logic to kick
VCPUs whenever an I/O event occurs!

qerror_report_err() is a transitional interface to help with
converting existing monitor commands to QMP. It should not be used
elsewhere.
The only remaining user in qemu-option.c is qemu_opts_parse(). Is it
used in QMP context? If not, we can simply replace
qerror_report_err() by error_report_err().
The uses in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c, qemu-nbd.c and under tests/ are
clearly not in QMP context.
The uses in vl.c aren't either, because the only QMP command handlers
there are qmp_query_status() and qmp_query_machines(), and they don't
call it.
Remaining uses:
* drive_def(): Command line -drive and such, HMP drive_add and pci_add
* hmp_chardev_add(): HMP chardev-add
* monitor_parse_command(): HMP core
* tmp_config_parse(): Command line -tpmdev
* net_host_device_add(): HMP host_net_add
* net_client_parse(): Command line -net and -netdev
* qemu_global_option(): Command line -global
* vnc_parse_func(): Command line -display, -vnc, default display, HMP
change, QMP change. Bummer.
* qemu_pci_hot_add_nic(): HMP pci_add
* usb_net_init(): Command line -usbdevice, HMP usb_add
Propagate errors through qemu_opts_parse(). Create a convenience
function qemu_opts_parse_noisily() that passes errors to
error_report_err(). Switch all non-QMP users outside tests to it.
That leaves vnc_parse_func(). Propagate errors through it. Since I'm
touching it anyway, rename it to vnc_parse().

It is reasonably common to want to create an object, set a
number of properties, register it in the hierarchy and then
mark it as complete (if a user creatable type). This requires
quite a lot of error prone, verbose, boilerplate code to achieve.
First a pair of functions object_set_props() / object_set_propv()
are added which allow for a list of objects to be set in
one single API call.
Then object_new_with_props() / object_new_with_propv() constructors
are added which simplify the sequence of calls to create an
object, populate properties, register in the object composition
tree and mark the object complete, into a single method call.
Usage would be:
Error *err = NULL;
Object *obj;
obj = object_new_with_propv(TYPE_MEMORY_BACKEND_FILE,
object_get_objects_root(),
"hostmem0",
&err,
"share", "yes",
"mem-path", "/dev/shm/somefile",
"prealloc", "yes",
"size", "1048576",
NULL);
Note all property values are passed in string form and will
be parsed into their required data types, using normal QOM
semantics for parsing from string format.

Commit 691a0c9c introduced a mechanism by which QEMU_CLOCK_HOST can
notify other parts of the emulator when the host clock has jumped
backward. This is used to avoid stalling timers that were scheduled
based on the host clock.
However, if the host clock jumps forward, then timers that were
scheduled based on the host clock may fire rapidly and cause other
problems. For example, the mc146818rtc periodic timer will block
execution of the VM and consume host CPU while firing every interrupt
for the time period that was skipped by the host clock.
To correct that problem, this commit fires the reset notification if the
host clock jumps forward by more than a hard-coded limit. The limit is
currently set to a value of 60 seconds, which should be small enough to
prevent excessive timer loops, but large enough to avoid frequent resets
in idle VMs.

__atomic_thread_fence does not include a compiler barrier; in the
C++11 memory model, fences take effect in combination with other
atomic operations. GCC implements this by making __atomic_load and
__atomic_store access memory as if the pointer was volatile, and
leaves no trace whatsoever of acquire and release fences in the
compiler's intermediate representation.
In QEMU, we want memory barriers to act on all memory, but at the same
time we would like to use __atomic_thread_fence for portability reasons.
Add compiler barriers manually around the __atomic_thread_fence.

We add a bitmap merge operation to assist in error cases
where we wish to combine two bitmaps together.
This is algorithmically O(bits) provided HBITMAP_LEVELS remains
constant. For a full bitmap on a 64bit machine:
sum(bits/64^k, k, 0, HBITMAP_LEVELS) ~= 1.01587 * bits
We may be able to improve running speed for particularly sparse
bitmaps by using iterators, but the running time for dense maps
will be worse.
We present the simpler solution first, and we can refine it later
if needed.

If QEMU forks after the CPU threads have been created, qemu_mutex_lock_iothread
will not be able to do qemu_cpu_kick_thread. There is no solution other than
assuming that forks after the CPU threads have been created will end up in an
exec. Forks before the CPU threads have been created (such as -daemonize)
have to call rcu_after_fork manually.
Notably, the oxygen theme for GTK+ forks and shows a "No such process" error
without this patch.
This patch can be reverted once the iothread loses the "kick the TCG thread"
magic.
User-mode emulation does not use the iothread, so it can also call
rcu_after_fork.

2ed1ebcf6 "timer: replace time() with QEMU_CLOCK_HOST" broke compile
when configured with --enable-profiler. Turned out the profiler has been
broken for a while.
This does s/qemu_time/tcg_time/ as the profiler only works in a TCG mode.
This also fixes the compile error.
This changes profile_getclock() to return nanoseconds rather than
CPU ticks as the "profile" HMP command prints seconds and there is no
platform-independent way to get ticks-per-second rate.
Since TCG is quite slow and get_clock() returns nanoseconds (fine
enough), this should not affect precision much.
This removes unused qemu_time_start and tlb_flush_time.

There is a not-so-subtle race in QSLIST_INSERT_HEAD_ATOMIC.
Because atomic_cmpxchg returns the old value instead of a success flag,
QSLIST_INSERT_HEAD_ATOMIC was checking for success by comparing against
the second argument to atomic_cmpxchg. Unfortunately, this only works
if the second argument is a local or thread-local variable.
If it is in memory, it can be subject to common subexpression elimination
(and then everything's fine) or reloaded after the atomic_cmpxchg,
depending on the compiler's whims. If the latter happens, the race can
happen. A thread can sneak in, doing something on elm->field.sle_next
after the atomic_cmpxchg and before the comparison. This causes a wrong
failure, and then two threads are using "elm" at the same time. In the
case discovered by Christian, the sequence was likely something like this:
thread 1 | thread 2
QSLIST_INSERT_HEAD_ATOMIC |
atomic_cmpxchg succeeds |
elm added to list |
| steal release_pool
| QSLIST_REMOVE_HEAD
| elm removed from list
| ...
| QSLIST_INSERT_HEAD_ATOMIC
| (overwrites sle_next)
spurious failure |
atomic_cmpxchg succeeds |
elm added to list again |
|
steal release_pool |
QSLIST_REMOVE_HEAD |
elm removed again |
The last three steps could be done by a third thread as well.

img_convert() and img_amend() use qemu_opts_do_parse(), which reports
errors with qerror_report_err(). Its error messages aren't helpful
here, the caller reports one that actually makes sense. Reproducer:
$ qemu-img convert -o backing_format=raw in.img out.img
qemu-img: Invalid parameter 'backing_format'
qemu-img: Invalid options for file format 'raw'
To fix, propagate errors through qemu_opts_do_parse(). This lifts the
error reporting into callers. Drop it from img_convert() and
img_amend(), keep it in qemu_chr_parse_compat(), bdrv_img_create().

Destructors are the main additional feature of pthread TLS compared
to __thread. If we were using C++ (hint, hint!) we could have used
thread-local objects with a destructor. Since we are not, instead,
we add a simple Notifier-based API.
Note that the notifier must be per-thread as well. We can add a
global list as well later, perhaps.
The Win32 implementation has some complications because a) detached
threads used not to have a QemuThreadData; b) the main thread does
not go through win32_start_routine, so we have to use atexit too.

We are going to introduce a wide data register for fw_cfg, but only for
the MMIO mapped device. The wide data register will also require the
tightening of endiannesses.
However we don't want to touch the I/O port mapped fw_cfg device at all.
Currently QEMU provides a single fw_cfg device type that can handle both
I/O port and MMIO mapping. This flexibility is not actually exploited by
any board in the tree, but it renders restricting the above changes to
MMIO very hard.
Therefore, let's derive two classes from TYPE_FW_CFG: TYPE_FW_CFG_IO and
TYPE_FW_CFG_MEM.
TYPE_FW_CFG_IO incorporates the base I/O port and the related combined
MemoryRegion. (NB: all boards in the tree that use the I/O port mapped
flavor opt for the combined mapping; that is, when the data port overlays
the high address byte of the selector port. Therefore we can drop the
capability to map those I/O ports separately.)
TYPE_FW_CFG_MEM incorporates the base addresses for the MMIO selector and
data registers, and their respective MemoryRegions.
The "realize" and "props" class members are specific to each new derived
class, and become unused for the base class. The base class retains the
"reset" member and the "vmsd" member, because the reset functionality and
the set of migrated data are not specific to the mapping.
The new functions fw_cfg_init_io() and fw_cfg_init_mem() expose the
possible mappings in separation. For now fw_cfg_init() is retained as a
compatibility shim that enforces the above assumptions.

at least in block layer we have the case of limits being defined for a
BlockDriverState. However, in this context often zero (0) has the special
meanining of undefined which means no limit. If two of those limits are
combined and the minimum is needed the minimum function should only return
zero if both parameters are zero.

A block device consists of a frontend device model and a backend.
A block backend has a tree of block drivers doing the actual work.
The tree is managed by the block layer.
We currently use a single abstraction BlockDriverState both for tree
nodes and the backend as a whole. Drawbacks:
* Its API includes both stuff that makes sense only at the block
backend level (root of the tree) and stuff that's only for use
within the block layer. This makes the API bigger and more complex
than necessary. Moreover, it's not obvious which interfaces are
meant for device models, and which really aren't.
* Since device models keep a reference to their backend, the backend
object can't just be destroyed. But for media change, we need to
replace the tree. Our solution is to make the BlockDriverState
generic, with actual driver state in a separate object, pointed to
by member opaque. That lets us replace the tree by deinitializing
and reinitializing its root. This special need of the root makes
the data structure awkward everywhere in the tree.
The general plan is to separate the APIs into "block backend", for use
by device models, monitor and whatever other code dealing with block
backends, and "block driver", for use by the block layer and whatever
other code (if any) dealing with trees and tree nodes.
Code dealing with block backends, device models in particular, should
become completely oblivious of BlockDriverState. This should let us
clean up both APIs, and the tree data structures.
This commit is a first step. It creates a minimal "block backend"
API: type BlockBackend and functions to create, destroy and find them.
BlockBackend objects are created and destroyed exactly when root
BlockDriverState objects are created and destroyed. "Root" in the
sense of "in bdrv_states". They're not yet used for anything; that'll
come shortly.
A root BlockDriverState is created with bdrv_new_root(), so where to
create a BlockBackend is obvious. Where these roots get destroyed
isn't always as obvious.
It is obvious in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c and qemu-nbd.c, and in error
paths of blockdev_init(), blk_connect(). That leaves destruction of
objects successfully created by blockdev_init() and blk_connect().
blockdev_init() is used only by drive_new() and qmp_blockdev_add().
Objects created by the latter are currently indestructible (see commit
48f364d "blockdev: Refuse to drive_del something added with
blockdev-add" and commit 2d246f0 "blockdev: Introduce
DriveInfo.enable_auto_del"). Objects created by the former get
destroyed by drive_del().
Objects created by blk_connect() get destroyed by blk_disconnect().
BlockBackend is reference-counted. Its reference count never exceeds
one so far, but that's going to change.
In drive_del(), the BB's reference count is surely one now. The BDS's
reference count is greater than one when something else is holding a
reference, such as a block job. In this case, the BB is destroyed
right away, but the BDS lives on until all extra references get
dropped.

IDs have long spread beyond QemuOpts: not everything with an ID
necessarily goes through QemuOpts. Commit 9aebf3b is about such a
case: block layer names are meant to be well-formed IDs, but some of
them don't go through QemuOpts, and thus weren't checked. The commit
fixed that the straightforward way: rename the internal QemuOpts
helper id_wellformed() to qemu_opts_id_wellformed() and give it
external linkage.
Instead of using it directly in block.c, the commit adds wrapper
bdrv_is_valid_name(), probably to hide the connection to QemuOpts.
Go one logical step further: emancipate IDs from QemuOpts. Rename the
function back to id_wellformed(), and put it in another file. While
there, clean up its value to bool. Peel off the bdrv_is_valid_name()
wrapper.
[Replaced stray return 0 with return false to match bool returns used
elsewhere in id_wellformed().
