Referring to "type" as both a meta-type (built-in, enum, union,
alternate, or struct) and a specific type (the name that the
schema uses for declaring structs) is confusing. Now that the
generator accepts 'struct' as a synonym for 'type', update all
documentation to use saner wording.

The next patch will quit special-casing "'union':'Foo',
'discriminator':{}" and instead use "'alternate':'Foo'".
Separating docs from implementation makes it easier to focus
on wording without holding up code. In particular, making
alternate a separate type makes for a nice type hierarchy:

While our top-level COPYING with its GPLv2+ license applies to
any documentation file that omits explicit instructions, these
days it's better to be a good example of calling out our
intentions. Correct use of GPL requires the use of a copyright
statement, so I'm adding notice to two QAPI documents, by
attributing these files to the initial authors and major
contributors. I used:

to determine authorship of these two files. qmp-spec.txt blames
entirely to Red Hat (easy, since my contribution falls in that
category); while qapi-code-gen.txt has multiple contributors
representing multiple entities. But since it was originally
supplied by Michael Roth, the notice I added there copies the
notice he has used in other files. As there is no intended
change in license from the implicit one previously present from
the top level, I have not bothered to CC other contributors;
if we want to weaken things to something looser (such as LGPL)
so that there is no question that someone re-implementing the
spec is not forced to use GPL, that would be a different commit.

Asynchronous callbacks provided by call_rcu are particularly important
for QEMU, because the BQL makes it hard to use synchronize_rcu.
In addition, the current RCU implementation is not particularly friendly
to multiple concurrent synchronize_rcu callers, making call_rcu even
more important.

This includes a (mangled) copy of the liburcu code. The main changes
are: 1) removing dependencies on many other header files in liburcu; 2)
removing for simplicity the tentative busy waiting in synchronize_rcu,
which has limited performance effects; 3) replacing futexes in
synchronize_rcu with QemuEvents for Win32 portability. The API is
the same as liburcu, so it should be possible in the future to require
liburcu on POSIX systems for example and use our copy only on Windows.
Among the various versions available I chose urcu-mb, which is the
least invasive implementation even though it does not have the
fastest rcu_read_{lock,unlock} implementation. The urcu flavor can
be changed later, after benchmarking.

The rocker device uses same PCI device ID as sdhci. Since rocker device driver
has already been accepted into Linux 3.18, and REDHAT_SDHCI device ID isn't
used by any drivers, it's safe to move REDHAT_SDHCI device ID, avoiding
conflict with rocker.

Commit 6d32717 "aio / timers: Remove alarm timers" has issues:
1. It silently ignores -clock for backward compatibility.
Incompatible change: -clock help no longer terminates the program.
Tolerable.
2. Failed to update option documentation. In particular, -help still
advises users to try -clock help for available timers. Drop all
documentation on -clock.
3. The 'query-alarm-clock' example in docs/writing-commands.txt no
longer works, and needs to be redone. Can't do that right now, so I
just stick in a FIXME.

Specify the upper limit of refcount_order to be 6 (that is,
refcount_bits = 64). Any larger value does not make much sense when all
offsets, sizes, cluster counts etc. "only" have a width of 64 bit as
well, and very large values would be very difficult to support.
Therefore, just cap it at the largest reasonable value.

Add a qemu extented register range to the standard vga mmio bar.
Right nowe there are two registers: One readonly register returning the
size of the region (so we can easily add more registers there if needed)
and one endian control register, so guests (especially ppc) can flip
the framebuffer endianness as they need it.

generated code looks like. Commit 05dfb26 removed some unwanted

Explicitly call object_unparent in the few places where we
will re-create the memory region. If the memory region is

The current version of the qcow2 specification recommends to save the backing
file name in the end of the first cluster. It follows that the backing file
name can be saved somewhere in the image, but the first cluster, which
contradicts the current QEMU implementation.
The patch makes the backing file name required to be placed after the header
extensions in the first image cluster.

The VSERPORT_CHANGE event was added in e2ae6159. The patch for
this event was prepared at a time when this file was gone, even
though it got applied immediately after dfab4892 restored this
file. Duplicate the documentation into this file, so that
anyone using this file instead of qapi will not miss out on this
new event.

The POWERDOWN event was first documented in 0aab9ec3. But since
dfab4892 later restored this file to the state prior to qmp events,
and we never documented it in the past, anyone using this file
instead of qapi will miss out on this event. Tweak the existing
wording of SHUTDOWN to match 84321831, and make the difference
between the two events apparent.

In many cases, the call to event_notifier_set in aio_notify is unnecessary.
In particular, if we are executing aio_dispatch, or if aio_poll is not
blocking, we know that we will soon get to the next loop iteration (if
necessary); the thread that hosts the AioContext's event loop does not
need any nudging.
The patch includes a Promela formal model that shows that this really
works and does not need any further complication such as generation
counts. It needs a memory barrier though.
The generation counts are not needed because any change to
ctx->dispatching after the memory barrier is okay for aio_notify.
If it changes from zero to one, it is the right thing to skip
event_notifier_set. If it changes from one to zero, the
event_notifier_set is unnecessary but harmless.

Old code was affected by memory gaps which resulted in buffer pointers
pointing to address outside of the mapped regions.
Here we are introducing following changes:
- new function qemu_get_ram_block_host_ptr() returns host pointer
to the ram block, it is needed to calculate offset of specific
region in the host memory
- new field mmap_offset is added to the VhostUserMemoryRegion. It
contains offset where specific region starts in the mapped memory.
As there is stil no wider adoption of vhost-user agreement was made
that we will not bump version number due to this change
- other fileds in VhostUserMemoryRegion struct are not changed, as
they are all needed for usermode app implementation
- region data is not taken from ram_list.blocks anymore, instead we
use region data which is alredy calculated for use in vhost-net
- Now multiple regions can have same FD and user applicaton can call
mmap() multiple times with the same FD but with different offset
(user needs to take care for offset page alignment)

The conversion of events to the QAPI, resulted in the removal of the
docs/qmp/qmp-events.txt file. This was done to avoid having duplicated
information between qmp-events.txt and qapi-event.json.
However, qmp-events.txt contains examples and we're still not sure
how to proper install QAPI docs in the host. To avoid harming users,
it's better to re-add qmp-events.txt for now and deal with the
duplication later.

SPICE_INITIALIZED, SPICE_CONNECTED, SPICE_DISCONNECTED and

use some common functions. inet_strfamily() is removed since no
callers exist anymore.
Note that there is no existing doc for SPICE_MIGRATE_COMPLETED
in docs/qmp/qmp-events.txt before this patch.

qapi-event.py will parse the schema and generate qapi-event.c, then
the API in qapi-event.c can be used to handle events in qemu code.
All API have prefix "qapi_event".
The script mainly includes two parts: generate API for each event
define, generate an enum type for all defined events.
Since in some cases the real emit behavior may change, for example,
qemu-img would not send a event, a callback layer is used to
control the behavior. As a result, the stubs at compile time
can be saved, the binding of block layer code and monitor code
will become looser.

With virtio-blk dataplane, I/O errors might occur while QEMU is
not in the main I/O thread. However, it's invalid to call vm_stop
when we're neither in a VCPU thread nor in the main I/O thread,
even if we were to take the iothread mutex around it.
To avoid this problem, we can raise a request to the main I/O thread,
similar to what QEMU does when vm_stop is called from a CPU thread.
We know that bdrv_error_action is called from an AIO callback, and
the moment at which the callback will fire is not well-defined; it
depends on the moment at which the disk or OS finishes the operation,
which can happen at any time. Note that QEMU is certainly not in a CPU
thread and we do not need to call cpu_stop_current() like vm_stop() does.
However, we need to ensure that any action taken by management will
result in correct detection of the error _and_ a running VM. In particular:
- the event must be raised after the iostatus has been set, so that
"info block" will return an iostatus that matches the event.
- the VM must be stopped after the iostatus has been set, so that
"info block" will return an iostatus that matches the runstate.
The ordering between the STOP and BLOCK_IO_ERROR events is preserved;
BLOCK_IO_ERROR is documented to come first.
This makes bdrv_error_action() thread safe (assuming QMP events are,
which is attacked by a separate series).

Using the file-backed smartcard backend is black magic, but it can
be useful if your only smartcard bricks itself if it is accessed
the wrong way too many times.
Complete the documentation to include the art of creating certificates

Adds support to compile QEMU with multiple tracing backends at the same time.
For example, you can compile QEMU with:
$ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=ftrace,dtrace
Where 'ftrace' can be handy for having an in-flight record of events, and 'dtrace' can be later used to extract more information from the system.
This patch allows having both available without recompiling QEMU.

If the guest hasn't updated the stats yet, instead of returning
an error, return '-1' for the stats and '0' as 'last-update'.
This lets applications ignore this without parsing the error message.

The purpose of this change is to help create a json file containing
common definitions; each bit of generated C code must be emitted
only one time.
A second history global to all QAPISchema instances has been added
to detect when a file is included more than one time and skip these
includes.
It does not act as a stack and the changes made to it by the
__init__ function are propagated back to the caller so it's really
a global state.

We commonly use the error API like this:
err = NULL;

bar(..., &err);
Every error source is checked separately. The second function is only
called when the first one succeeds. Both functions are free to pass
their argument to error_set(). Because error_set() asserts no error
has been set, this effectively means they must not be called with an
error set.
The qapi-generated code uses the error API differently:

gnat(..., errp);
Errors accumulate in *errp: first error wins, subsequent errors get
dropped. To make this work, the second function does nothing when
called with an error set. Requires non-null errp, or else the second
function can't see the first one fail.
This usage has also bled into visitor tests, and two device model
object property getters rtc_get_date() and balloon_stats_get_all().
With the "accumulate" technique, you need fewer error checks in
callers, and buy that with an error check in every callee. Can be
nice.
However, mixing the two techniques is confusing. You can't use the
"accumulate" technique with functions designed for the "check
separately" technique. You can use the "check separately" technique
with functions designed for the "accumulate" technique, but then
error_set() can't catch you setting an error more than once.
Standardize on the "check separately" technique for now, because it's
overwhelmingly prevalent.

Input and output marshalling functions do it differently. Change them
to work the same: initialize the I/O visitor, use it, clean it up,
initialize the dealloc visitor, use it, clean it up.
This delays dealloc visitor initialization in output marshalling
functions, and input visitor cleanup in input marshalling functions.
No functional change, but the latter will be convenient when I change
the error handling.

At the moment we require vmstate definitions to set minimum_version_id_old
to the same value as minimum_version_id if they do not provide a
load_state_old handler. Since the load_state_old functionality is
required only for a handful of devices that need to retain migration
compatibility with a pre-vmstate implementation, this means the bulk
of devices have pointless boilerplate. Relax the definition so that
minimum_version_id_old is ignored if there is no load_state_old handler.
Note that under the old scheme we would segfault if the vmstate
specified a minimum_version_id_old that was less than minimum_version_id
but did not provide a load_state_old function, and the incoming state
specified a version number between minimum_version_id_old and
minimum_version_id. Under the new scheme this will just result in
our failing the migration.

error_is_set(&var) is the same as var != NULL, but it takes
whole-program analysis to figure that out. Unnecessarily hard for
optimizers, static checkers, and human readers. Commit 84d18f0 dumbed
it down to obvious, but a few more have crept in since, and
documentation was overlooked. Dumb these down, too.

By default, any union will automatically generate a enum type as
"[UnionName]Kind" in C code, and it is duplicated when the discriminator
is specified as a pre-defined enum type in schema. After this patch,
the pre-defined enum type will be really used as the switch case
condition in generated C code, if discriminator is an enum field.

As far as we can tell, all known bugs have been fixed:
1. Parallel migrations are working
2. IPv6 migration is working
3. virt-test is working
I'm not comfortable sending the revised libvirt patch
until this is accepted or review suggestions are addressed,
(including pin-all support. It does not make sense to
remove experimental for one thing and not the other. That's
too many trips through the libvirt community).

This patchset enables the core of the quorum mechanism.
The num_children reads are compared to get the majority version and if this
version exists more than threshold times the guest won't see the error at all.
If a block is corrupted or if an error occurs during an IO or if the quorum
cannot be established QMP events are used to report to the management.
Use gnutls's SHA-256 to compare versions.
--enable-quorum must be used to enable the feature.

This includes new unit-tests for acpi by Marcel,
hotplug for pci bridges by myself (piix only so far)
and cpu hotplug for q35.
And a bunch of fixes all over the place as usual.
I included the patch to fix memory alignment for q35
as well - even though it limits 32 bit guests to 3G (they
previously could address more memory with PAE).
To remove the limit, this will have to be fixed in seabios.
I also added self as virtio co-maintainer so I don't need
to troll the list for patches to review.

The documentation of how overlapping memory regions behave and how
the priority system works was rather brief, and confusion about
priorities seems to be quite common for developers trying to understand
how the memory region system works, so expand and clarify it.
This includes a worked example with overlaps, documentation of the
behaviour when an overlapped container has "holes", and mention
that it's valid for a region to have both MMIO callbacks and
subregions (and how this interacts with priorities when it does).

When memory regions overlap, priority can be used to specify
which of them takes priority. By making the priority values signed
rather than unsigned, we make it more convenient to implement
a situation where one "background" region should appear only
where no other region exists: rather than having to explicitly
specify a high priority for all the other regions, we can let them take
the default (zero) priority and specify a negative priority for the
background region.

qemu.org is held by a third-party and no core community contributor has
access to the DNS configuration. This leaves the website exposed to
outages due to DNS issues or IP address changes. For example, if the
web server IP address needs to change we cannot guarantee qemu.org will
point to it!
The newer qemu-project.org domain name is owned by Anthony Liguori
<anthony@codemonkey.ws>. You can confirm this by querying the whois
information. Also note that the #qemu IRC channel topic already
references qemu-project.org.
Short of having a dedicated legal entity to hold the domain name on
behalf of the community, qemu-project.org seems like the safest bet.
Let's replace references to qemu.org with qemu-project.org.
Note that git-submodule(1) does not detect URL changes. The following
commands clear out and re-initialize all submodules to ensure you are
using the latest URLs:

This introduces a new 'base' key for struct definitions that refers to
another struct type. On the JSON level, the fields of the base type are
included directly into the same namespace as the fields of the defined
type, like with unions. On the C level, a pointer to a struct of the
base type is included.

The qcow2 specification does not explicitly state so far that every
snapshot table entry is aligned to 8 bytes. QEMU, in contrast, does this
alignment, thus it should be properly documented (which this patch
does).

The discriminator for anonymous unions is the data type. This allows to
have a union type that allows both of these:

As requested, the protocol now includes memory unpinning support.
This has been implemented in a non-optimized manner, in such a way
that one could devise an LRU or other workload-specific information
on top of the basic mechanism to influence the way unpinning happens
during runtime.
The feature is not yet user-facing, and is thus can only be enabled
at compile-time.

TARGET_ARCH is generally wrong to use, there are better variables
provided in config-target.mak. The right one is usually TARGET_NAME
(previously TARGET_ARCH2), but for bsd-user we can also use TARGET_ABI_DIR
for consistency with linux-user.

Rate limiting is now simply a byte counter; client call
qemu_file_rate_limit() manually to determine if they have to exit.
So it is possible and simple to move the functionality to QEMUFile.
This makes the remaining functionality of s->file redundant;
in the next patch we can remove it and write directly to s->migration_file.

The bochs dispi interface traditionally uses port 0x1ce as 16bit index
register and port 0x1cf as 16bit data register. The later is unaligned,
and probably for that reason the the data register was moved to 0x1d0
for non-x86 archs.
This patch makes the data register available at 0x1d0 on x86 too. The
old x86 location is kept for compatibility reasons, so both 0x1cf and
0x1d0 can be used as data register on x86.

The dirty bit will make it possible to perform lazy refcount updates,
where the image file is not kept consistent all the time. Upon opening
a dirty image file, it is necessary to perform a consistency check and
repair any incorrect refcounts.
Therefore the dirty bit must be an incompatible feature bit. We don't
want old programs accessing a file with stale refcounts.

$subject says all. First cut.
It's a pure UAS (usb attached scsi) emulation, without BOT (bulk-only
transport) compatibility. If your guest can't handle it use usb-storage
instead.
The emulation works like any other scsi hba emulation (eps, lsi, virtio,
megasas, ...). It provides just the HBA where you can attach scsi
devices as you like using '-device'. A single scsi target with up to
256 luns is supported.
For now only usb 2.0 transport is supported. This will change in the
future though as I plan to use this as playground when codeing up &
testing usb 3.0 transport and streams support in the qemu usb core and
the xhci emulation.
No migration support yet. I'm planning to add usb 3.0 support first as
this probably requires saving additional state.
Special thanks go to Paolo for bringing the qemu scsi emulation into
shape, so this can be added nicely without having to touch a single line
of scsi code.

This adds a qemu-specific hypervisor call to the pseries machine
which allows to do what amounts to memmove, memcpy and xor over
regions of physical memory such as the framebuffer.
This is the simplest way to get usable framebuffer speed from
SLOF since the framebuffer isn't mapped in the VRMA and so would
otherwise require an hcall per 8 bytes access.
The performance is still not great but usable, and can be improved
with a more complex implementation of the hcall itself if needed.
This also adds some documentation for the qemu-specific hypercalls
that we add to PAPR along with a new qemu,hypertas-functions property
that mirrors ibm,hypertas-functions and provides some discoverability
for the new calls.
Note: I chose note to advertise H_RTAS to the guest via that mechanism.
This is done on purpose, the guest uses the normal RTAS interfaces
provided by qemu (including SLOF) which internally calls H_RTAS.
We might in the future implement part (or even all) of RTAS inside the
guest like IBM's firmware does and replace H_RTAS with some finer grained
set of private hypercalls.

This updates the qcow2 specification to cover version 3. It contains the
following changes:
- Added compatible/incompatible/auto-clear feature bits plus an optional
feature name table to allow useful error messages even if an older
version doesn't know some feature at all.
- Configurable refcount width. If you don't want to use internal
snapshots, make refcounts one bit and save cache space and I/O.
- Zero cluster flags. This allows discard even with a backing file that
doesn't contain zeros. It is also useful for copy-on-read/image
streaming, as you'll want to keep sparseness without accessing the
remote image for an unallocated cluster all the time.
- Fixed internal snapshot metadata to use 64 bit VM state size. You
can't save a snapshot of a VM with >= 4 GB RAM today.
- Extended internal snapshot metadata to contain the disk size, so that
resizing images that have snapshots can be allowed in the future.

The PCI hotplug eject register has always returned 0, so let's redefine
it as a hotplug feature register. The existing model of using separate
up & down read-only registers and an eject via write to this register
becomes the base implementation. As we make use of new interfaces we'll
set bits here to allow the BIOS and AML implementation to optimize for
the platform implementation.

The write side of these registers is never used and actually can't be
used as defined because any read/modify/write sequence from the guest
potentially races with qemu. Drop the write support and define these
as read-only registers.

Right now, the semantics of next_list are complicated. The caller must:
* call start_list
* call next_list for each element *including the first*
* on the first call to next_list, the second argument should point to
NULL and the result is the head of the list. On subsequent calls,
the second argument should point to the last node (last result of
next_list) and next_list itself tacks the element at the tail of the
list.
This works for both input and output visitor, but having the visitor
write memory when it is only reading the list is ugly. Plus, relying
on *list to detect the first call is tricky and undocumented.
We can initialize so->entry in next_list instead of start_list, leaving
it NULL in start_list. This way next_list sees clearly whether it is
on the first call---as a bonus, it discriminates the cases based on
internal state of the visitor rather than external state. We can
also pull the assignment of the list head from generated code up to
next_list.

Adds a 'TRACE_${NAME}_ENABLED' preprocessor define for each tracing event in
"trace.h".
This lets the user conditionally compile code with a relatively high execution
cost that is only necessary when producing the tracing information for an event
that is enabled.
Note that events using this define will probably have the "disable" property by
default, in order to avoid such costs on regular builds.

A basic wildcard matching is supported in both the monitor command
"trace-event" and the events list file. That means you can enable/disable
the events having a common prefix in a batch. For example, virtio-blk trace
events could be enabled using:
trace-event virtio_blk_* on

String arguments are useful for producing human-readable traces without
post-processing (e.g. stderr backend). Although the simple backend
cannot handles strings all others can. Strings should be allowed and
the simple backend can be extended to support them.

The tracetool parser only picks up PRI*64 and other format string macros
when enclosed between double quoted strings. Lift this restriction by
extracting everything after the closing ')' as the format string:

One trick here: it turns out that backslashes in the format string like
"\n" were being interpreted by echo(1). Fix this by using the POSIX
printf(1) command instead. Although it normally does not make sense to
include backslashes in trace event format strings, an injected newline
causes tracetool to emit a broken header file and I want to eliminate
cases where broken output is emitted, even if the input was bad.

The "-trace events" argument can be used to provide a file with a list of trace
event names that will be enabled prior to starting execution, thus providing
early tracing.
This saves the user from manually toggling event states through the monitor
interface or whichever backend-specific interface.

This patch finally merges the EHCI host adapter aka USB 2.0 support.
Based on the ehci bits collected @ git://git.kiszka.org/qemu.git ehci
EHCI has a long out-of-tree history. Project was started by Mark
Burkley, with contributions by Niels de Vos. David S. Ahern continued
working on it. Kevin Wolf, Jan Kiszka and Vincent Palatin contributed
bugfixes.
/me (Gerd Hoffmann) picked it up where it left off, prepared the code
for merge, fixed a few bugs and added basic user docs.

Trace events outside the global mutex cannot be used with the simple
trace backend since it is not thread-safe. There is no check to prevent
them being enabled so people sometimes learn this the hard way.
This patch restructures the simple trace backend with a ring buffer
suitable for multiple concurrent writers. A writeout thread empties the
trace buffer when threshold fill levels are reached. Should the
writeout thread be unable to keep up with trace generation, records will
simply be dropped.
Each time events are dropped a special record is written to the trace
file indicating how many events were dropped. The event ID is
0xfffffffffffffffe and its signature is dropped(uint32_t count).
