MemoryRegionSection includes an Int128 'size' field;
on some platforms the compiler causes an alignment of this to
a 128bit boundary, leaving 8 bytes of dead space.
This deadspace can be filled with junk.
Move the size field to the top avoiding unnecessary alignment.

When iothreads are in use, the failure to grab the aio context results
in an assertion failure when trying to unlock things during blk_unref,
when trying to unlock a mutex that was not locked. In short, all
calls to nbd_export_put need to done while within the correct aio
context. But since nbd_export_put can recursively reach itself via
nbd_export_close, and recursively grabbing the context would deadlock,
we can't do the context grab directly in those functions, but must do
so in their callers.
Hoist the use of the correct aio_context from nbd_export_new() to its
caller qmp_nbd_server_add(). Then tweak qmp_nbd_server_remove(),
nbd_eject_notifier(), and nbd_esport_close_all() to grab the right
context, so that all callers during qemu now own the context before
nbd_export_put() can call blk_unref().
Remaining uses in qemu-nbd don't matter (since that use case does not
support iothreads).

Cleaning up offline XenDevice objects directly in
xen_device_backend_changed() is dangerous as xen_device_unrealize() will
modify the watch list that is being walked. Even the QLIST_FOREACH_SAFE()
used in notifier_list_notify() is insufficient as *two* notifiers (for
the frontend and backend watches) are removed, thus potentially rendering
the 'next' pointer unsafe.
The solution is to use the XenBus backend_watch handler to do the clean-up
instead, as it is invoked whilst walking a separate watch list.
This patch therefore adds a new 'inactive_devices' list to XenBus, to which
offline devices are added by xen_device_backend_changed(). The XenBus
backend_watch registration is also changed to not only invoke
xen_bus_enumerate() but also a new xen_bus_cleanup() function, which will
walk 'inactive_devices' and perform the necessary actions.
For safety an extra 'online' check is also added to xen_bus_type_enumerate()
to make sure that no attempt is made to create a new XenDevice object for a
backend that is offline.
NOTE: This patch also includes some cosmetic changes:
- substitute the local variable name 'backend_state'
in xen_bus_type_enumerate() with 'state', since there
is no ambiguity with any other state in that context.
- change xen_device_state_is_active() to
xen_device_frontend_is_active() (and pass a XenDevice directly)
since the state tests contained therein only apply to a frontend.
- use 'state' rather then 'xendev->backend_state' in
xen_device_backend_changed() to shorten the code.

Xenstore watch call-backs are already abstracted away from XenBus using
the XenWatch data structure but the associated NotifierList manipulation
and file handle registration is still open coded in various xen_bus_...()
functions.
This patch creates a new XenWatchList data structure to allow these
interactions to be abstracted away from XenBus as well. This is in
preparation for a subsequent patch which will introduce separate watch lists
for XenBus and XenDevice objects.
NOTE: This patch also introduces a new notifier_list_empty() helper function
for the purposes of adding an assertion that a XenWatchList is not

to be added to the PCMachineState structure.

devend_memop can rely on the fact that the result is always either
0 or MO_BSWAP, corresponding respectively to host endianness and
the opposite. Native (target) endianness in turn can be either
the host endianness, in which case MO_BSWAP is only returned for
host-opposite endianness, or the opposite, in which case 0 is only
returned for host endianness.
With this in mind, devend_memop can be compiled as a setcond+shift

Neither stat(2) nor lseek(2) report the size of Linux devdax pmem
character device nodes. Commit 314aec4a6e
("hostmem-file: reject invalid pmem file sizes") added code to
hostmem-file.c to fetch the size from sysfs and compare against the
user-provided size=NUM parameter:
if (backend->size > size) {
error_setg(errp, "size property %" PRIu64 " is larger than "
"pmem file \"%s\" size %" PRIu64, backend->size,
fb->mem_path, size);
return;
}
It turns out that exec.c:qemu_ram_alloc_from_fd() already has an
equivalent size check but it skips devdax pmem character devices because
lseek(2) returns 0:
if (file_size > 0 && file_size < size) {
error_setg(errp, "backing store %s size 0x%" PRIx64
" does not match 'size' option 0x" RAM_ADDR_FMT,
mem_path, file_size, size);
return NULL;
}
This patch moves the devdax pmem file size code into get_file_size() so
that we check the memory size in a single place:
qemu_ram_alloc_from_fd(). This simplifies the code and makes it more
general.
This also fixes the problem that hostmem-file only checks the devdax
pmem file size when the pmem=on parameter is given. An unchecked
size=NUM parameter can lead to SIGBUS in QEMU so we must always fetch
the file size for Linux devdax pmem character device nodes.

GPIO pins are arranged in groups of 8 pins labeled A,B,..,Y,Z,AA,AB,AC.
(Note that the ast2400 controller only goes up to group AB).
A set has four groups (except set AC which only has one) and is
referred to by the groups it is composed of (eg ABCD,EFGH,...,YZAAAB).
Each set is accessed and controlled by a bank of 14 registers.
These registers operate on a per pin level where each bit in the register
corresponds to a pin, except for the command source registers. The command
source registers operate on a per group level where bits 24, 16, 8 and 0
correspond to each group in the set.
eg. registers for set ABCD:
|D7...D0|C7...C0|B7...B0|A7...A0| <- GPIOs
|31...24|23...16|15....8|7.....0| <- bit position
Note that there are a couple of groups that only have 4 pins.
There are two ways that this model deviates from the behaviour of the
actual controller:
(1) The only control source driving the GPIO pins in the model is the ARM
model (as there currently aren't models for the LPC or Coprocessor).
(2) None of the registers in the model are reset tolerant (needs
integration with the watchdog).

Commit fe0480d6 and friends added BDRV_REQ_NO_FALLBACK as a way to
avoid wasting time on a preliminary write-zero request that will later
be rewritten by actual data, if it is known that the write-zero
request will use a slow fallback; but in doing so, could not optimize
for NBD. The NBD specification is now considering an extension that
will allow passing on those semantics; this patch updates the new
protocol bits and 'qemu-nbd --list' output to recognize the bit, as
well as the new errno value possible when using the new flag; while
upcoming patches will improve the client to use the feature when
present, and the server to advertise support for it.
The NBD spec recommends (but not requires) that ENOTSUP be avoided for
all but failures of a fast zero (the only time it is mandatory to
avoid an ENOTSUP failure is when fast zero is supported but not
requested during write zeroes; the questionable use is for ENOTSUP to
other actions like a normal write request). However, clients that get
an unexpected ENOTSUP will either already be treating it the same as
EINVAL, or may appreciate the extra bit of information. We were
equally loose for returning EOVERFLOW in more situations than
recommended by the spec, so if it turns out to be a problem in
practice, a later patch can tighten handling for both error codes.

When creating a read-only image, we are still advertising support for
TRIM and WRITE_ZEROES to the client, even though the client should not
be issuing those commands. But seeing this requires looking across
multiple functions:
All callers to nbd_export_new() passed a single flag based solely on
whether the export allows writes. Later, we then pass a constant set
of flags to nbd_negotiate_options() (namely, the set of flags which we
always support, at least for writable images), which is then further
dynamically modified with NBD_FLAG_SEND_DF based on client requests
for structured options. Finally, when processing NBD_OPT_EXPORT_NAME
or NBD_OPT_EXPORT_GO we bitwise-or the original caller's flag with the
runtime set of flags we've built up over several functions.
Let's refactor things to instead compute a baseline of flags as soon
as possible which gets shared between multiple clients, in
nbd_export_new(), and changing the signature for the callers to pass
in a simpler bool rather than having to figure out flags. We can then
get rid of the 'myflags' parameter to various functions, and instead
refer to client for everything we need (we still have to perform a
bitwise-OR for NBD_FLAG_SEND_DF during NBD_OPT_EXPORT_NAME and
NBD_OPT_EXPORT_GO, but it's easier to see what is being computed).
This lets us quit advertising senseless flags for read-only images, as
well as making the next patch for exposing FAST_ZERO support easier to
write.

[eblake: improve commit message, update iotest 223]
The NBD specification defines NBD_FLAG_CAN_MULTI_CONN, which can be
advertised when the server promises cache consistency between
simultaneous clients (basically, rules that determine what FUA and
flush from one client are able to guarantee for reads from another
client). When we don't permit simultaneous clients (such as qemu-nbd
without -e), the bit makes no sense; and for writable images, we
probably have a lot more work before we can declare that actions from
one client are cache-consistent with actions from another. But for
read-only images, where flush isn't changing any data, we might as
well advertise multi-conn support. What's more, advertisement of the
bit makes it easier for clients to determine if 'qemu-nbd -e' was in
use, where a second connection will succeed rather than hang until the
first client goes away.
This patch affects qemu as server in advertising the bit. We may want
to consider patches to qemu as client to attempt parallel connections
for higher throughput by spreading the load over those connections
when a server advertises multi-conn, but for now sticking to one
connection per nbd:// BDS is okay.

The raising of exceptions from check_watchpoint, buried inside
of the I/O subsystem, is fundamentally broken. We do not have
the helper return address with which we can unwind guest state.
Replace PHYS_SECTION_WATCH and io_mem_watch with TLB_WATCHPOINT.
Move the call to cpu_check_watchpoint into the cputlb helpers

This allows watchpoints on RAM to bypass the full i/o access path.

We had two different mechanisms to force a recheck of the tlb.
Before TLB_RECHECK was introduced, we had a PAGE_WRITE_INV bit
that would immediate set TLB_INVALID_MASK, which automatically
means that a second check of the tlb entry fails.
We can use the same mechanism to handle small pages.
Conserve TLB_* bits by removing TLB_RECHECK.

Preparation for collapsing the two byte swaps adjust_endianness and
handle_bswap into the former.
Call memory_region_dispatch_{read|write} with endianness encoded into
the "MemOp op" operand.
This patch does not change any behaviour as
memory_region_dispatch_{read|write} is yet to handle the endianness.
Once it does handle endianness, callers with byte swaps can collapse
them into adjust_endianness.

The pseries guests do not normally allocate PCI resources and rely on
the system firmware doing so. Furthermore at least at some point in
the past the pseries guests won't even allowed to change BARs, probably
it is still the case for phyp. So since the initial commit we have [1]
which prevents resource reallocation.
This is not a problem until we want specific BAR alignments, for example,
PAGE_SIZE==64k to make sure we can still map MMIO BARs directly. For
the boot time devices we handle this in SLOF [2] but since QEMU's RTAS
does not allocate BARs, the guest does this instead and does not align
BARs even if Linux is given pci=resource_alignment=16@pci:0:0 as
PCI_PROBE_ONLY makes Linux ignore alignment requests.
ARM folks added a dial to control PCI_PROBE_ONLY via the device tree [3].
This makes use of the dial to advertise to the guest that we can handle
BAR reassignments. This limits the change to the latest pseries machine
to avoid old guests explosion.
We do not remove the flag from [1] as pseries guests are still supported
under phyp so having that removed may cause problems.

Optimization with align down to 4 * sizeof(long) is dropped due to:
1. It is strange: it aligns length of the buffer, but where is a

2. buffer_is_zero() is a better place for optimizations and it has

The xen_[rw]?mb() macros defined in ring.h can't be used and the fact
that there are gated behind __XEN_INTERFACE_VERSION__ means that it
needs to be defined somewhere. QEMU doesn't implement interfaces with
the Xen hypervisor so defining __XEN_INTERFACE_VERSION__ is pointless.
This leads to:
include/hw/xen/io/ring.h:47:5: error: "__XEN_INTERFACE_VERSION__"
is not defined, evaluates to 0 [-Werror=undef]
Cleanup ring.h. The xen_*mb() macros are already defined in xenctrl.h
which is included in xen_common.h.

This will result in us dropping support for Debian Jessie and
Ubuntu 14.04.
As per the commit message 14.04 was already outside our list
of supported build platforms and an exception was only made
because one of the build hosts used during merge testing was
stuck on 14.04.
Debian Jessie is justified to drop because we only aim to
support at most 2 major versions of Debian at any time. This
means Buster and Stretch at this time.
The g_strv_contains compat code is dropped as this API is
present since 2.44
The g_assert_cmpmem compat code is dropped as this API is

This has been useful to modify and test the Linux pseries suspend
code but it requires modification to the guest to call it (due to
being gated by other unimplemented features). It is not otherwise
used by Linux yet, but work is slowly progressing there.
This allows a (lightly modified) guest kernel to suspend with
`echo mem > /sys/power/state` and be resumed with system_wakeup

Waking from suspend is not logically a machine reset on all machines,
particularly in the paravirtualized case rather than hardware
emulated. The ppc spapr machine for example just invokes hypervisor
to suspend, and expects that call to return with the machine in the
same state (modulo some possible migration and reconfiguration
details).
Implement a machine ->wakeup method and use that if it exists.

This implements the H_TPM_COMM hypercall, which is used by an
Ultravisor to pass TPM commands directly to the host's TPM device, or
a TPM Resource Manager associated with the device.
This also introduces a new virtual device, spapr-tpm-proxy, which
is used to configure the host TPM path to be used to service
requests sent by H_TPM_COMM hcalls, for example:
-device spapr-tpm-proxy,id=tpmp0,host-path=/dev/tpmrm0
By default, no spapr-tpm-proxy will be created, and hcalls will return
H_FUNCTION.
The full specification for this hypercall can be found in
docs/specs/ppc-spapr-uv-hcalls.txt
Since SVM-related hcalls like H_TPM_COMM use a reserved range of
0xEF00-0xEF80, we introduce a separate hcall table here to handle
them.

Most of IO instructions can be executed only at the end of the block in
icount mode. Therefore translator can set cpu_can_io flag when translating
the last instruction.
But when the blocks are chained, then this flag is not reset and may

icount-based record/replay uses qemu_clock_deadline_ns_all to measure
the period until vCPU may be interrupted.
This function takes in account the virtual timers, because they belong
to the virtual devices that may generate interrupt request or affect
the virtual machine state.
However, there are a subset of virtual timers, that are marked with
'external' flag. These do not change the virtual machine state and
only based on virtual clock. Calculating the deadling using the external
timers breaks the determinism, because they do not belong to the replayed
part of the virtual machine.
This patch fixes the deadline calculation for this case by adding
new parameter for skipping the external timers when it is needed.

There is a race between TCG and accesses to the dirty log:
vCPU thread reader thread
----------------------- -----------------------
TLB check -> slow path
notdirty_mem_write
write to RAM
set dirty flag
clear dirty flag
TLB check -> fast path
read memory
write to RAM
Fortunately, in order to fix it, no change is required to the
vCPU thread. However, the reader thread must delay the read after
the vCPU thread has finished the write. This can be approximated
conservatively by run_on_cpu, which waits for the end of the current
translation block.
A similar technique is used by KVM, which has to do a synchronous TLB
flush after doing a test-and-clear of the dirty-page flags.

No .bdrv_has_zero_init() implementation returns 1 if growing the file
would add non-zero areas (at least with PREALLOC_MODE_OFF), so using it
in lieu of this new function was always safe.
But on the other hand, it is possible that growing an image that is not
zero-initialized would still add a zero-initialized area, like when
using nonpreallocating truncation on a preallocated image. For callers
that care only about truncation, not about creation with potential
preallocation, this new function is useful.
Alternatively, we could have added a PreallocMode parameter to
bdrv_has_zero_init(). But the only user would have been qemu-img
convert, which does not have a plain PreallocMode value right now -- it
would have to parse the creation option to obtain it. Therefore, the
simpler solution is to let bdrv_has_zero_init() inquire the
preallocation status and add the new bdrv_has_zero_init_truncate() that
presupposes PREALLOC_MODE_OFF.

bdrv_has_zero_init() only has meaning for newly created images or image
areas. If the mirror job itself did not create the image, it cannot
rely on bdrv_has_zero_init()'s result to carry any meaning.
This is the case for drive-mirror with mode=existing and always for
blockdev-mirror.
Note that we only have to zero-initialize the target with sync=full,
because other modes actually do not promise that the target will contain
the same data as the source after the job -- sync=top only promises to
copy anything allocated in the top layer, and sync=none will only copy
new I/O. (Which is how mirror has always handled it.)

I'm surprised it didn't come up sooner, but sometimes we have a +busy
bitmap as a source. This is dangerous from the QMP API, but if we are
the owner that marked the bitmap busy, it's safe to merge it using it as

It is not safe in the general case to allow users to read from in-use

Because the only bitmap sync mode is 'on-success', this adds no new

is maintained as a syntactic sugar for sync=bitmap, mode=on-success.

sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:
* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).
* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.
Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.
Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also
add qemu/main-loop.h.

Almost a third of its inclusions are actually superfluous. Delete

from char/serial.h to char/serial.c.
hw/semihosting/config.c, monitor/monitor.c, qdev-monitor.c, and
stubs/semihost.c define variables declared in sysemu/sysemu.h without
including it. The compiler is cool with that, but include it anyway.
This doesn't reduce actual use much, as it's still included into

TYPE_IOMMU_MEMORY_REGION is a direct subtype of TYPE_MEMORY_REGION.
Its instance struct is IOMMUMemoryRegion, and its first member is a
MemoryRegion. Correct. Its class struct is IOMMUMemoryRegionClass,
and its first member is a DeviceClass. Wrong. Messed up when commit
1221a47467 introduced the QOM type. It even included hw/qdev-core.h
just for that.
TYPE_MEMORY_REGION doesn't bother to define a class struct. This is
fine, it simply defaults to its super-type TYPE_OBJECT's class struct
ObjectClass. Changing IOMMUMemoryRegionClass's first member's type to
ObjectClass would be a minimal fix, if a bit brittle: if
TYPE_MEMORY_REGION ever acquired own class struct, we'd have to update
IOMMUMemoryRegionClass to use it.
Fix it the clean and robust way instead: give TYPE_MEMORY_REGION its
own class struct MemoryRegionClass now, and use it for
IOMMUMemoryRegionClass's first member.
Revert the include of hw/qdev-core.h, and fix the few files that have
come to rely on it.

Move QapiErrorClass from common.json to new error.json. Touching
common.json now recompiles only some 2900 objects.

Some of the generated qapi-types-MODULE.h are included all over the
place. Changing a QAPI type can trigger massive recompiling. Top
scorers recompile more than 1000 out of some 6600 objects (not
counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h):
6300 qapi/qapi-builtin-types.h
5700 qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h
3900 qapi/qapi-types-common.h
3300 qapi/qapi-types-sockets.h

3000 qapi/qapi-types-crypto.h
3000 qapi/qapi-types-job.h
3000 qapi/qapi-types-block-core.h
2800 qapi/qapi-types-block.h
1300 qapi/qapi-types-net.h
Clean up headers to include generated QAPI headers only where needed.
Impact is negligible except for hw/qdev-properties.h.
This header includes qapi/qapi-types-block.h and
qapi/qapi-types-misc.h. They are used only in expansions of property
definition macros such as DEFINE_PROP_BLOCKDEV_ON_ERROR() and
DEFINE_PROP_OFF_AUTO(). Moving their inclusion from
hw/qdev-properties.h to the users of these macros avoids pointless
recompiles. This is how other property definition macros, such as
DEFINE_PROP_NETDEV(), already work.
Improves things for some of the top scorers:
3600 qapi/qapi-types-common.h
2800 qapi/qapi-types-sockets.h
900 qapi/qapi-types-misc.h
2200 qapi/qapi-types-crypto.h
2100 qapi/qapi-types-job.h

Back in 2016, we discussed[1] rules for headers, and these were
generally liked:
1. Have a carefully curated header that's included everywhere first. We
got that already thanks to Peter: osdep.h.
2. Headers should normally include everything they need beyond osdep.h.
If exceptions are needed for some reason, they must be documented in
the header. If all that's needed from a header is typedefs, put
those into qemu/typedefs.h instead of including the header.
3. Cyclic inclusion is forbidden.
This patch gets include/ closer to obeying 2.
It's actually extracted from my "[RFC] Baby steps towards saner
headers" series[2], which demonstrates a possible path towards
checking 2 automatically. It passes the RFC test there.

This fixes devices like IDE that can still start new requests from I/O
handlers in the CPU thread while the block backend is drained.
The basic assumption is that in a drain section, no new requests should
be allowed through a BlockBackend (blk_drained_begin/end don't exist,
we get drain sections only on the node level). However, there are two
special cases where requests should not be queued:
1. Block jobs: We already make sure that block jobs are paused in a
drain section, so they won't start new requests. However, if the
drain_begin is called on the job's BlockBackend first, it can happen
that we deadlock because the job stays busy until it reaches a pause
point - which it can't if its requests aren't processed any more.
The proper solution here would be to make all requests through the
job's filter node instead of using a BlockBackend. For now, just
disabling request queuing on the job BlockBackend is simpler.
2. In test cases where making requests through bdrv_* would be
cumbersome because we'd need a BdrvChild. As we already got the
functionality to disable request queuing from 1., use it in tests,
too, for convenience.

The functionality offered by blk_pread_unthrottled() goes back to commit
498e386c58. Then, we couldn't perform I/O throttling with synchronous
requests because timers wouldn't be executed in polling loops. So the
commit automatically disabled I/O throttling as soon as a synchronous
request was issued.
However, for geometry detection during disk initialisation, we always
used (and still use) synchronous requests even if guest requests use AIO
later. Geometry detection was not wanted to disable I/O throttling, so
bdrv_pread_unthrottled() was introduced which disabled throttling only
temporarily.
All of this isn't necessary any more because we do run timers in polling
loop and even synchronous requests are now using coroutine
infrastructure internally. For this reason, commit 90c78624f already
removed the automatic disabling of I/O throttling.
It's time to get rid of the workaround for the removed code, and its
abuse of blk_root_drained_begin()/end(), as well.

relies on the fact that the states of all devices are restored before

We still have multiple issues in the current code
- The PBP is not freed during unrealize()
- The PBP is not reset on device resets: After a reset, the PBP is stale.
- We are not indicating VIRTIO_BALLOON_F_MUST_TELL_HOST, therefore
guests (esp. legacy guests) will reuse pages without deflating,
turning the PBP stale. Adding that would require compat handling.
Instead, let's use the PBP only temporarily, when processing one bulk of
inflation requests. This will keep guest_page_size > 4k working (with
Linux guests). There is nothing to do for deflation requests anymore.
The pbp is only used for a limited amount of time.

bdrv_set_aio_context_ignore() can only work in the main loop:
bdrv_drained_begin() only works in the main loop and the node's (old)
AioContext; and bdrv_drained_end() really only works in the main loop
and the node's (new) AioContext (contrary to its current comment, which
is just wrong).
Consequentially, bdrv_set_aio_context_ignore() must be called from the
main loop. Luckily, assuming that we can make block graph changes only
from the main loop as well, all its callers do that already.
Note that changing a node's context in a sense is an operation that
changes the block graph, so it actually makes sense to require this
function to be called from the main loop.
Also, fix bdrv_drained_end()'s description. You can only use it from
the main loop or the node's AioContext, and in the latter case, the
whole subtree must be in the same context.

This adds an accelerator name to the "into mtree -f" to tell the user if
a particular memory section is registered with the accelerator;
the primary user for this is KVM and such information is useful
for debugging purposes.
This adds a has_memory() callback to the accelerator class allowing any
accelerator to have a label in that memory tree dump.
Since memory sections are passed to memory listeners and get registered
in accelerators (rather than memory regions), this only prints new labels
for flatviews attached to the system address space.

We should never poll anywhere in bdrv_do_drained_end() (including its
recursive callees like bdrv_drain_invoke()), because it does not cope
well with graph changes. In fact, it has been written based on the
postulation that no graph changes will happen in it.
Instead, the callers that want to poll must poll, i.e. all currently
globally available wrappers: bdrv_drained_end(),
bdrv_subtree_drained_end(), bdrv_unapply_subtree_drain(), and
bdrv_drain_all_end(). Graph changes there do not matter.
They can poll simply by passing a pointer to a drained_end_counter and
wait until it reaches 0.
This patch also adds a non-polling global wrapper for
bdrv_do_drained_end() that takes a drained_end_counter pointer. We need
such a variant because now no function called anywhere from
bdrv_do_drained_end() must poll. This includes
BdrvChildRole.drained_end(), which already must not poll according to
its interface documentation, but bdrv_child_cb_drained_end() just
violates that by invoking bdrv_drained_end() (which does poll).
Therefore, BdrvChildRole.drained_end() must take a *drained_end_counter
parameter, which bdrv_child_cb_drained_end() can pass on to the new
bdrv_drained_end_no_poll() function.
Note that we now have a pattern of all drained_end-related functions
either polling or receiving a *drained_end_counter to let the caller
poll based on that.
A problem with a single poll loop is that when the drained section in
bdrv_set_aio_context_ignore() ends, some nodes in the subgraph may be in
the old contexts, while others are in the new context already. To let
the collective poll in bdrv_drained_end() work correctly, we must not
hold a lock to the old context, so that the old context can make
progress in case it is different from the current context.
(In the process, remove the comment saying that the current context is
always the old context, because it is wrong.)
In all other places, all nodes in a subtree must be in the same context,
so we can just poll that. The exception of course is
bdrv_drain_all_end(), but that always runs in the main context, so we
can just poll NULL (like bdrv_drain_all_begin() does).

Commit 5cb2737e92 laid out why
bdrv_do_drained_end() must decrement the quiesce_counter after
bdrv_drain_invoke(). It did not give a very good reason why it has to
happen after bdrv_parent_drained_end(), instead only claiming symmetry
to bdrv_do_drained_begin().
It turns out that delaying it for so long is wrong.
Situation: We have an active commit job (i.e. a mirror job) from top to
base for the following graph:
filter
|
[file]
|
v
top --[backing]--> base
Now the VM is closed, which results in the job being cancelled and a
bdrv_drain_all() happening pretty much simultaneously.
Beginning the drain means the job is paused once whenever one of its
nodes is quiesced. This is reversed when the drain ends.
With how the code currently is, after base's drain ends (which means
that it will have unpaused the job once), its quiesce_counter remains at
1 while it goes to undrain its parents (bdrv_parent_drained_end()). For
some reason or another, undraining filter causes the job to be kicked
and enter mirror_exit_common(), where it proceeds to invoke
block_job_remove_all_bdrv().
Now base will be detached from the job. Because its quiesce_counter is
still 1, it will unpause the job once more. So in total, undraining
base will unpause the job twice. Eventually, this will lead to the
job's pause_count going negative -- well, it would, were there not an
assertion against this, which crashes qemu.
The general problem is that if in bdrv_parent_drained_end() we undrain
parent A, and then undrain parent B, which then leads to A detaching the
child, bdrv_replace_child_noperm() will undrain A as if we had not done
so yet; that is, one time too many.
It follows that we cannot decrement the quiesce_counter after invoking
bdrv_parent_drained_end().
Unfortunately, decrementing it before bdrv_parent_drained_end() would be
wrong, too. Imagine the above situation in reverse: Undraining A leads
to B detaching the child. If we had already decremented the
quiesce_counter by that point, bdrv_replace_child_noperm() would undrain
B one time too little; because it expects bdrv_parent_drained_end() to
issue this undrain. But bdrv_parent_drained_end() won't do that,
because B is no longer a parent.
Therefore, we have to do something else. This patch opts for
introducing a second quiesce_counter that counts how many times a
child's parent has been quiesced (though c->role->drained_*). With
that, bdrv_replace_child_noperm() just has to undrain the parent exactly
that many times when removing a child, and it will always be right.

Currently we are doing log_clear() right after log_sync() which mostly
keeps the old behavior when log_clear() was still part of log_sync().
This patch tries to further optimize the migration log_clear() code
path to split huge log_clear()s into smaller chunks.
We do this by spliting the whole guest memory region into memory
chunks, whose size is decided by MigrationState.clear_bitmap_shift (an
example will be given below). With that, we don't do the dirty bitmap
clear operation on the remote node (e.g., KVM) when we fetch the dirty
bitmap, instead we explicitly clear the dirty bitmap for the memory
chunk for each of the first time we send a page in that chunk.
Here comes an example.
Assuming the guest has 64G memory, then before this patch the KVM
ioctl KVM_CLEAR_DIRTY_LOG will be a single one covering 64G memory.
If after the patch, let's assume when the clear bitmap shift is 18,
then the memory chunk size on x86_64 will be 1UL<<18 * 4K = 1GB. Then
instead of sending a big 64G ioctl, we'll send 64 small ioctls, each
of the ioctl will cover 1G of the guest memory. For each of the 64
small ioctls, we'll only send if any of the page in that small chunk
was going to be sent right away.

Introduce KVMMemoryListener.slots_lock to protect the slots inside the
kvm memory listener. Currently it is close to useless because all the
KVM code path now is always protected by the BQL. But it'll start to
make sense in follow up patches where we might do remote dirty bitmap
clear and also we'll update the per-slot cached dirty bitmap even
without the BQL. So let's prepare for it.
We can also use per-slot lock for above reason but it seems to be an
overkill. Let's just use this bigger one (which covers all the slots
of a single address space) but anyway this lock is still much smaller
than the BQL.

When synchronizing dirty bitmap from kernel KVM we do it in a
per-kvmslot fashion and we allocate the userspace bitmap for each of
the ioctl. This patch instead make the bitmap cache be persistent
then we don't need to g_malloc0() every time.
More importantly, the cached per-kvmslot dirty bitmap will be further
used when we want to add support for the KVM_CLEAR_DIRTY_LOG and this
cached bitmap will be used to guarantee we won't clear any unknown
dirty bits otherwise that can be a severe data loss issue for
migration code.

Introduce a new memory region listener hook log_clear() to allow the
listeners to hook onto the points where the dirty bitmap is cleared by
the bitmap users.
Previously log_sync() contains two operations:
- dirty bitmap collection, and,
- dirty bitmap clear on remote site.
Let's take KVM as example - log_sync() for KVM will first copy the
kernel dirty bitmap to userspace, and at the same time we'll clear the
dirty bitmap there along with re-protecting all the guest pages again.
We add this new log_clear() interface only to split the old log_sync()
into two separated procedures:
- use log_sync() to collect the collection only, and,
- use log_clear() to clear the remote dirty bitmap.
With the new interface, the memory listener users will still be able
to decide how to implement the log synchronization procedure, e.g.,
they can still only provide log_sync() method only and put all the two
procedures within log_sync() (that's how the old KVM works before
KVM_CAP_MANUAL_DIRTY_LOG_PROTECT2 is introduced). However with this
new interface the memory listener users will start to have a chance to
postpone the log clear operation explicitly if the module supports.
That can really benefit users like KVM at least for host kernels that
support KVM_CAP_MANUAL_DIRTY_LOG_PROTECT2.
There are three places that can clear dirty bits in any one of the
dirty bitmap in the ram_list.dirty_memory[3] array:
cpu_physical_memory_snapshot_and_clear_dirty
cpu_physical_memory_test_and_clear_dirty
cpu_physical_memory_sync_dirty_bitmap
Currently we hook directly into each of the functions to notify about
the log_clear().

The PL031 RTC tracks the difference between the guest RTC
and the host RTC using a tick_offset field. For migration,
however, we currently always migrate the offset between
the guest and the vm_clock, even if the RTC clock is not
the same as the vm_clock; this was an attempt to retain
migration backwards compatibility.
Unfortunately this results in the RTC behaving oddly across
a VM state save and restore -- since the VM clock stands still
across save-then-restore, regardless of how much real world
time has elapsed, the guest RTC ends up out of sync with the
host RTC in the restored VM.
Fix this by migrating the raw tick_offset. To retain migration
compatibility as far as possible, we have a new property
migrate-tick-offset; by default this is 'true' and we will
migrate the true tick offset in a new subsection; if the
incoming data has no subsection we fall back to the old
vm_clock-based offset information, so old->new migration
compatibility is preserved. For complete new->old migration
compatibility, the property is set to 'false' for 4.0 and
earlier machine types (this will only affect 'virt-4.0'
and below, as none of the other pl031-using machines are
versioned).

old machine types only.
In order to help users to find out if being deprecated CLI option
'-numa node, mem' is still supported by particular machine type, add new
"numa-mem-supported" property to output of query-machines.
"numa-mem-supported" is set to 'true' for machines that currently support
NUMA, but it will be flipped to 'false' later on, once deprecation period
expires and kept 'true' only for old machine types that used to support
the legacy option so it won't break existing configuration that are using
it.

In new sockets/dies/cores/threads model, the apicid of logical cpu could
imply die level info of guest cpu topology thus x86_apicid_from_cpu_idx()
need to be refactored with #dies value, so does apicid_*_offset().
To keep semantic compatibility, the legacy pkg_offset which helps to
generate CPUIDs such as 0x3 for L3 cache should be mapping to die_offset.

The field die_id (default as 0) and has_die_id are introduced to X86CPU.
Following the legacy smp check rules, the die_id validity is added to
the same contexts as leagcy smp variables such as hmp_hotpluggable_cpus(),
machine_set_cpu_numa_node(), cpu_slot_to_string() and pc_cpu_pre_plug().

The die-level as the first PC-specific cpu topology is added to the leagcy
cpu topology model, which has one die per package implicitly and only the
numbers of sockets/cores/threads are configurable.
In the new model with die-level support, the total number of logical
processors (including offline) on board will be calculated as:
#cpus = #sockets * #dies * #cores * #threads
and considering compatibility, the default value for #dies would be
initialized to one in x86_cpu_initfn() and pc_machine_initfn().

To get rid of the global smp_* variables we're currently using, it's recommended
to pass MachineState in the list of incoming parameters for functions that use
global smp variables, thus some redundant parameters are dropped. It's applied
for legacy smbios_*(), *_machine_reset(), hot_add_cpu() and mips *_create_cpu().

The cpu topology property CpuTopology is added to the MachineState
and its members are initialized with the leagcy global smp variables.
From this commit, the code in the system emulation mode is supposed to
use cpu topology variables from MachineState instead of the global ones
defined in vl.c and there is no semantic change.
