This patch series is a new binutils port for C-SKY processors, including support for both the V1 and V2 processor variants. V1 is derived from the MCore architecture while V2 is substantially different, with mixed 16- and 32-bit instructions, a larger register set, a different (but overlapping) ABI, etc. There is support for bare-metal ELF targets and Linux with both glibc and uClibc.
This code is being contributed jointly by C-SKY Microsystems and Mentor Graphics. C-SKY is responsible for the technical content and has proposed Lifang Xia and Yunhai Shang as port maintainers. (Note that C-SKY does have a corporate copyright assignment on file with the FSF.) Mentor Graphics' role has been cleaning up the code, adding documentation and additional test cases, etc, to address issues we anticipated reviewers would complain about.

This is a relatively straightforward patch to improve support for the
IBM Gekko and IBM Broadway processors. Broadway is functionally
equivalent to the IBM 750CL, while Gekko's functionality is a subset
of theirs. The patch simplifies this reality and adds -mgekko and
-mbroadway as aliases for -m750cl. I didn't feel it was worth wasting
a PPC_OPCODE_* bit to differentiate Gekko. The patch adds a number of
simplified mnemonics for special purpose register access. Notably,
Broadway adds 4 additional IBAT and DBAT registers but these are not
assigned sequential SPR numbers.

Documentation for .arch and .cpu directives currently says that it
accepts the same name as -march/-mcpu command-line options respectively.
However it only accept the architecture/CPU part of those options: it
does not accept specifying an extension which is done via
.arch_extension. This patch clarifies that the extension is not
accepted.

Binutils documentation uses a mix of spelling for the compound word
"command-line X". According to [1]:
"Sometimes compound words are written separately (nail polish),
sometimes with a hyphen (short-sighted) and sometimes as one word
(eyelashes). Often new compounds are written as two separate words and,
as they become more familiar, they are either connected with a hyphen
(-) or made into one word."
I think command-line X is common enough in our industry that the two
workds command and line should be connected. Since command-line is more
common than commandline, I propose to update binutils documentation to
consistently use "command-line" when this is used as an adjective to a
noun (eg. command-line argument, command-line switch, command-line
option and command-line flag). I've left occurences of "the command
line" as is. I've also left gdb, sim and readline alone and have only
touched public documentation (texi and NEWS files).

When trying to run the update-gnulib.sh script in gdb, I get this:
Error: Wrong automake version (Unescaped left brace in regex is deprecated, passed through in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/\${ <-- HERE ([^ =:+{}]+)}/ at /opt/automake/1.11.1/bin/automake line 4113.), we need 1.11.1.
Aborting.
Apparently, it's an issue with a regex in automake that triggers a
warning starting with Perl 5.22. It has been fixed in automake 1.15.1.
So I think it's a good excuse to bump the versions of autoconf and
automake used in the gnulib import. And to avoid requiring multiple
builds of autoconf/automake, it was suggested that we bump the required
version of those tools for all binutils-gdb.
For autoconf, the 2.69 version is universally available, so it's an easy
choice. For automake, different distros and distro versions have
different automake versions. But 1.15.1 seems to be the most readily
available as a package. In any case, it's easy to build it from source.
I removed the version checks from AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS and AC_PREREQ,
because I don't think they are useful in our case. They only specify a
lower bound for the acceptable version of automake/autoconf. That's
useful if you let the user choose the version of the tool they want to
use, but want to set a minimum version (because you use a feature that
was introduced in that version). In our case, we force people to use a
specific version anyway. For the autoconf version, we have the check in
config/override.m4 that enforces the version we want. It will be one
less thing to update next time we change autotools version.
I hit a few categories of problems that required some changes. They are
described below along with the chosen solutions.
Problem 1:
configure.ac:17: warning: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: two- and three-arguments forms are deprecated. For more info, see:
configure.ac:17: http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Modernize-AM_005fINIT_005fAUTOMAKE-invocation
Solution 1:
Adjust the code based on the example at that URL.
Problem 2 (in zlib/):

Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'INSTALL'
Makefile.am: error: required file './NEWS' not found
Makefile.am: error: required file './AUTHORS' not found
Makefile.am: error: required file './COPYING' not found
Makefile.am: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'COPYING'
Solution 2:
Add the foreign option to AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS.
Problem 3:

Solution 3:
Remove the cygnus options.
Problem 4:
Makefile.am:656: warning: 'INCLUDES' is the old name for 'AM_CPPFLAGS' (or '*_CPPFLAGS')
Solution 4:
Rename "INCLUDES = " to "AM_CPPFLAGS += " (because AM_CPPFLAGS is
already defined earlier).
Problem 5:

doc/Makefile.am: warning: Oops!
doc/Makefile.am: It appears this file (or files included by it) are triggering

doc/Makefile.am: If you want your '.info' files to be placed in the builddir
doc/Makefile.am: rather than in the srcdir, you have to use the shiny new
doc/Makefile.am: 'info-in-builddir' automake option.
Solution 5:
Rename .texinfo files to .texi.
Problem 6:
doc/Makefile.am: warning: Oops!
doc/Makefile.am: It appears this file (or files included by it) are triggering
doc/Makefile.am: an undocumented, soon-to-be-removed automake hack.
doc/Makefile.am: Future automake versions will no longer place in the builddir

doc/Makefile.am: 'info-in-builddir' automake option.
Solution 6:
Remove the hack at the bottom of doc/Makefile.am and use
the info-in-builddir automake option.
Problem 7:
doc/Makefile.am:35: error: required file '../texinfo.tex' not found
doc/Makefile.am:35: 'automake --add-missing' can install 'texinfo.tex'
Solution 7:
Use the no-texinfo.tex automake option. We also have one in
texinfo/texinfo.tex, not sure if we should point to that, or move it
(or a newer version of it added with automake --add-missing) to
top-level.
Problem 8:
Makefile.am:131: warning: source file 'config/tc-aarch64.c' is in a subdirectory,
Makefile.am:131: but option 'subdir-objects' is disabled
automake: warning: possible forward-incompatibility.
automake: At least a source file is in a subdirectory, but the 'subdir-objects'
automake: automake option hasn't been enabled. For now, the corresponding output
automake: object file(s) will be placed in the top-level directory. However,
automake: this behaviour will change in future Automake versions: they will
automake: unconditionally cause object files to be placed in the same subdirectory
automake: of the corresponding sources.
automake: You are advised to start using 'subdir-objects' option throughout your
automake: project, to avoid future incompatibilities.
Solution 8:
Use subdir-objects, that means adjusting references to some .o that will now
be in config/.
Problem 9:

Solution 9:
Use AC_LANG_SOURCE, or use proper quoting.
Problem 10 (in intl/):

1. When the upper 32 bits of destination registers of
andq $imm31, %r64
testq $imm31, %r64
xorq %r64, %r64
subq %r64, %r64
known to be zero, we can encode them without the REX_W bit:
andl $imm31, %r32
testl $imm31, %r32
xorl %r32, %r32
subl %r32, %r32
This optimization is enabled with -O, -O2 and -Os.
2. Since 0xb0 mov with 32-bit destination registers zero-extends 32-bit
immediate to 64-bit destination register, we can use it to encode 64-bit
mov with 32-bit immediates. This optimization is enabled with -O, -O2
and -Os.
3. Since the upper bits of destination registers of VEX128 and EVEX128
instructions are extended to zero, if all bits of destination registers
of AVX256 or AVX512 instructions are zero, we can use VEX128 or EVEX128
encoding to encode AVX256 or AVX512 instructions. When 2 source
registers are identical, AVX256 and AVX512 andn and xor instructions:
VOP %reg, %reg, %dest_reg
can be encoded with
VOP128 %reg, %reg, %dest_reg
This optimization is enabled with -O2 and -Os.
4. 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit register tests with immediate may be
encoded as 8-bit register test with immediate. This optimization is
enabled with -Os.
This patch does:
1. Add {nooptimize} pseudo prefix to disable instruction size
optimization.
2. Add optimize to i386_opcode_modifier to tell assembler that encoding
of an instruction may be optimized.

Documentation for .arch_extension says it accepts the same architectural
extensions as those accepted by -mcpu. Given the name and the fact that
-march for obvious reason also accept the same extensions, I believe
it's worth mentioning that it accepts the same extensions as both
-march and -mcpu. This commit addresses that.

Implement the '.nop SIZE[, CONTROL]' assembler directive, which emits
SIZE bytes filled with no-op instructions. SIZE is absolute expression.
The optional CONTROL byte controls how no-op instructions should be
generated. If the comma and @var{control} are omitted, CONTROL is
assumed to be zero.
For Intel 80386 and AMD x86-64 targets, CONTROL byte specifies the size
limit of a single no-op instruction. The valid values of CONTROL byte
are between 0 and 8 for 16-bit mode, between 0 and 10 for 32-bit mode,
between 0 and 11 for 64-bit mode. When 0 is used, the no-op size limit
is set to the maximum supported size.
2 new relax states, rs_space_nop and rs_fill_nop, are added to enum
_relax_state, which are similar to rs_space and rs_fill, respectively,
but they fill with no-op instructions, instead of a single byte. A
target backend must override the default md_generate_nops to generate
proper no-op instructions. Otherwise, an error of unimplemented .nop
directive will be issued whenever .nop directive is used.

/tmp/tst.s:1: Warning: ignoring attempt to redefine built-in register 'lr'
Instead let's treat this as a proper alias at startup time thus
avoiding the problem and treating these as proper aliases
rather than new registers. This means that attempts to redefine
the alias with the same "name" will provoke no warning and attempts
to redefine the alias to something else will provoke the above mentioned
warning.
Tested make check-gas and no regressions.
Ok to apply to trunk (and backport to 2.29 branch)?

This patch adds support for the ARM Cortex-A55 and
Cortex-A75 processors.
The ARM Cortex-A55 and Cortex-A75 procsessors implement the ARMv8-A
architecture, with support for the ARMv8.1-A and ARMv8.2-A extensions,
including support for the 16-bit floating point extensions.
The 16-bit floating-point extensions are optional, and we haven't defined
an option mapping straight to them thus far, so this patch first needs to
add one of those in include/opcode/arm.h, then we can simply add the CPU names
as usual in config/tc-arm.c .
Tested on arm-none-eabi.

This patch is part of a patch series to add support for ARMv8-R
architecture. Its purpose is to add support for ARMv8-R in GAS:
instructions, build attributes and readelf.
=== Patch description ===
Although some differences exist for system registers, from GAS point of
view ARMv8-R supports the same instructions as ARMv8-A Aarch32 state
and a subset of its extensions. This patch therefore introduce a new
feature bit to distinguish the availability of the pan, ras and rdma
extensions between ARMv8-A and ARMv8-R and allow crypto, fp and simd
extensions to be used by ARMv8-R.
Most of the changes are then in the testsuite to (i) rename source files
and error output to be shared between ARMv8-A and ARMv8-R, (ii) rename
files with expected output for ARMv8-A build attributes and (iii) add
new files with expected output for ARMv8-R build attributes.

Add MIPS16e2 ASE support as per the architecture specification[1],
including in particular:
1. A new ELF ASE flag to mark MIPS16e2 binaries.
2. MIPS16e2 instruction assembly support, including a relaxation update
to use LUI rather than an LI/SLL instruction pair for loading the
high part of 32-bit addresses.
3. MIPS16e2 instruction disassembly support, including updated rules for
extended forms of instructions that are now subdecoded and therefore
do not alias to the original MIPS16 ISA revision instructions even
for encodings that are not valid in the MIPS16e2 instruction set.
Add `-mmips16e2' and `-mno-mips16e2' GAS command-line options and their
corresponding `mips16e2' and `no-mips16e2' settings for the `.set' and
`.module' pseudo-ops. Control the availability of the MT ASE subset of
the MIPS16e2 instruction set with a combination of these controls and
the preexisting MT ASE controls.

corresponds to the respective command-line option.

Mark an ALLOC section, which should be placed in special memory area,

Nick pointed out that I hadn't documented the new -mfpu option

Having looked through the list only one (neon-fp16) really should be
documented; the other two entries in the real table should not be
documented as they are aliases kept for legacy compatibility reasons.
This patch adds the missing entries and notes in the main table that
the other two entries should not be documented.

Many x86 instructions have more than one encodings. Assembler picks
the default one, usually the shortest one. Although the ".s", ".d8"
and ".d32" suffixes can be used to swap register operands or specify
displacement size, they aren't very flexible. This patch adds pseudo
prefixes, {xxx}, to control instruction encoding. The available
pseudo prefixes are {disp8}, {disp32}, {load}, {store}, {vex2}, {vex3}
and {evex}. Pseudo prefixes are preferred over the ".s", ".d8" and
".d32" suffixes, which are deprecated.

This adds support of new instructions to the S/390 specific parts.
The important feature of the new instruction set is the support of
single and extended precision floating point vector operations.
Note: arch12 is NOT the official name of the new CPU. It just
continues the series of archXX options supported as alternate names.
The archXX terminology refers to the edition number of the Principle
of Operations manual. The official CPU name will be added later while
keeping support of the arch12 for backwards compatibility.
No testsuite regressions.

that and also mentions that +sve implies +simd. (It also implies

Complement commit 9d862524f6 ("MIPS: Verify the ISA mode and alignment

checks for invalid branches between ISA modes introduced there, to help
with some handwritten code lacking `.insn' annotation for labels used as
branch targets and code produced by older versions of GCC which suffers
from the issue with branches to code that has been optimized away,
addressed with GCC commit 242424 ("MIPS/GCC: Mark trailing labels with

We've decided to standardize on two flags for RISC-V: "-march" sets the
target architecture (which determines which instructions can be
generated), and "-mabi" sets the target ABI. We needed to rework this
because the old flag set didn't support soft-float or single-float ABIs,
and didn't support an x32-style ABI on RISC-V.
Additionally, we've changed the behavior of the -march flag: it's now a
lot stricter and only parses things we can actually understand.
Additionally, it's now lowercase-only: the rationale is that while the
RISC-V ISA manual specifies that ISA strings are case-insensitive, in
Linux-land things are usually case-sensitive. Since this flag can be
used to determine library paths, we didn't want to bake some
case-insensitivity in there that would case trouble later.
This patch implements these two new flags and removes the old flags that
could conflict with these. There wasn't a RISC-V release before, so we
want to just support a clean flag set.

Before SPARC V9 the effect of having a delayed branch instruction in the
delay slot of a conditional delayed branch was undefined.
In SPARC V9 DCTI couples are well defined.
However, starting with the UltraSPARC Architecture 2005, DCTI
couples (of all kind) are deprecated and should not be used, as they may
be slow or behave differently to what the programmer expects.
This patch adds a new command line option --dcti-couples-detect to `as',
disabled by default, that makes the assembler to warn the user if an
unpredictable DCTI couple is found. Tests and documentation are
included.

This patch adds alternate CPU names which adhere to the number of the
architecture document. So instead of having z196, zEC12, and z13 you

should primarily be used.
The alternate names are supposed to improve compatibility with the IBM
